BIG SHOES TO FILL!

I have to start with a confession: these are massive shoes to fill! For over a decade, my predecessor at Truck & Fleet towers has built and nurtured a publication that now sits in a class of one as the most unique and respected voice in its field throughout the Middle East.

As I take over the reigns of the magazine and its ecosystem of events, website and social media platforms, I cannot but acknowledge the great work of Stephen White, the previous incumbent, in making T&FME what it is today.

As the new editor, I find myself in both a positive and precarious position. The long way that has already been paved makes my job both easier – owing to the body of work that precedes me – as well as fraught, because of the heightened expectations that have already been set for the magazine. And in this, dear reader and industry participant, I request your continued support for Truck & Fleet Middle East as the chronicle of record in the commercial vehicles and mobility sector of the wider region.

These are exciting times for the worlds of mobility and transport, as we stand on the cusp of perhaps the most important energy transition since the one from steam to fossil fuels way back in the day.

The current political situation playing out in the Middle East is only hastening this transition as the global oil supply

chain becomes increasingly volatile and undependable. Despite being the need of the hour, however, this transition will not be easy, and is not expected to be totally smooth.

Charging infrastructure still lags behind potential demand, keeping fence sitters of EV adoption from making the leap. And when it comes to EV commercial vehicles, the Middle East still does not enjoy the same degree of model choice as some other global regions.

With this backdrop, important EV commercial vehicle launches are taking place, both regionally and globally, as can be seen from our coverage of the eCanter light truck’s UAE launch with Al Habtoor and FUSO, while Volvo Trucks continues to expand its green credentials, this time with the launch of electric trucks that are capable of long-haul operations of up to 700km on a single charge.

Elsewhere in the issue, the focus is on Al Shirawi’s latest introduction – lightweight aluminium tankers from trailer heavyweight HEIL Trailers Asia. With their durability, higher load capacities and lightweight construction, these versatile bowsers carry forward the prevailing theme of fuel efficiency and emission reduction.

With the recent regional geo-political upheavals having calmed, here’s hoping that there is an equally quick reduction in friction and animosity, so that business-as-usual can resume quickly.

Dubai launches fully driverless taxi service NETWORK

AUTONOMOUS RIDE-HAILING INTRODUCED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BAIDU APOLLO GO APP

FLEET

Dubai has taken a significant step towards its smart mobility ambitions with the launch of fully driverless commercial taxi services, introduced through a partnership between Dubai Taxi Company (DTC) and Baidu’s autonomous ridehailing platform, Apollo Go.

The service, now available via the Apollo Go app, marks the platform’s first international deployment and signals a major milestone for driverless transport in the region. Residents and visitors can book rides through the app, with plans to expand availability to other e-hailing platforms, including Bolt, as the rollout progresses.

The initiative brings together Apollo Go’s autonomous driving technology and DTC’s extensive operational experience as Dubai’s largest taxi and limousine operator. The move also aligns with the emirate’s Self Driving Transport Strategy, which aims to convert 25% of all journeys into smart and driverless trips by 2030.

The rollout will begin with 50 vehicles in its first year, with a phased expansion set to grow the fleet to more than 1,000 driverless taxis over the coming years.

“Our partnership with DTC represents a new chapter for autonomous mobility in Dubai. By combining our cutting-edge

technology with DTC’s local expertise, and through the launch of the Apollo Go app, our first international app deployment, we are creating a safe, efficient and scalable ride-hailing service that sets a new standard for the region. We are proud to contribute to Dubai’s vision for smart, future-ready transportation,” said Nan Yang, Vice President of Baidu and General Manager of Overseas Business Unit, Intelligent Driving Group.

Mansoor Rahma Alfalasi, Group CEO, DTC said, “Dubai Taxi Company is proud and excited to be among the first entities to roll out the operations of driverless taxis in Dubai,

marking a significant milestone in advancing the emirate’s vision for smart and sustainable mobility. This initiative is in line with DTC’s innovation-driven strategy and its commitment to delivering future-ready services that elevate the customer experience. We are grateful to our strategic partner, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), for their unwavering support and the development of a comprehensive infrastructure that enables the seamless deployment of driverless taxis, aligned with the ambition of transforming 25% of all transportation trips into smart and driverless journeys by 2030.”

KEZAD LAUNCHES MENA’S FIRST AUTONOMOUS FREIGHT TRUCK

FLEET

The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) in Abu Dhabi has officially overseen the launch of a pilot programme involving autonomous trucks, marking a significant first for the Middle East and North Africa region. Introduced through a collaboration between the ITC, the global technology firm Autotech, known for its expertise in autonomous vehicle systems, and AD Ports Group, the testing phase is taking place within Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi (KEZAD).

By situating the trial within KEZAD, authorities said they are able to assess the technology in a controlled yet practical industrial setting that reflects real-world freight and logistics operations.

At the core of the project is the deployment of self-driving trucks designed to handle freight and logistical transport tasks. This initiative demonstrates a broader push to expand the use of autonomous systems beyond passenger vehicles and into various other modes of transportation. The ITC clarified that the primary objective of the pilot is to thoroughly evaluate how autonomous trucks perform within a defined industrial and logistics environment. Test runs have already been conducted along specific routes inside KEZAD, strictly following approved regulatory frameworks and operational guidelines to ensure safety and compliance.

PIONEERS TRANSPORT EXPANDS FLEET WITH NEW SCANIA TRUCKS IN SAUDI ARABIA

LOGISTICS

Pioneers Transport, a logistics and heavy transport company based in Saudi Arabia, has taken delivery of its first group of Scania G440 XT truck units as part of a broader plan to expand its heavy-duty fleet and strengthen its role in the oil and gas transport sector. The new trucks are expected to help the company handle more demanding transportation assignments across the region’s energy industry.

The newly delivered vehicles feature a 6×4 axle configuration, which is commonly used for difficult transport operations. This setup allows the trucks to perform reliably in challenging environments, particularly for heavy-duty work such as moving drilling rigs and other large industrial equipment. Such operations require vehicles that provide high levels of durability, power, and reliability under demanding conditions.

The transaction was facilitated by GCC Olayan, the exclusive distributor of Scania trucks in Saudi Arabia. Scania’s XT truck range is specifically designed for operation in harsh environments and can be customised to endure extreme working conditions while maintaining strong operational performance and uptime These trucks are equipped

with Scania’s 13-litre Super engine, which incorporates performance improvements and the company’s Twin SCR emissions technology. This advanced powertrain is designed to reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions, with the manufacturer stating it can achieve up to eight percent better fuel efficiency compared with previous models.

LANDMARK RAILWAY DELIVERY OF NISSAN CARS

LOGISTICS

Al Masaood Automobiles and Etihad Rail Freight have completed the UAE’s inaugural rail shipment of finished passenger vehicles for an automotive dealership, underlining a major step forward in the country’s logistics landscape.

The milestone, significant national first for the UAE, involved transporting Nissan passenger cars from eastern seaports to the dry port at the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD), introducing a new model for moving goods efficiently across the Emirates.

Al Masaood Automobiles —

the authorised distributor for Nissan, INFINITI and Renault in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Al Dhafra region — partnered with Etihad Rail Freight, becoming the first dealer in the UAE to use rail for delivering finished vehicles.

The development highlights Etihad Rail Freight’s continued move beyond bulk commodities into higher-value and more diverse cargo, while demonstrating how rail can be integrated into modern, end-toend supply chains.

Irfan Tansel, CEO of Al Masaood Automobiles, said: “This initiative reflects the steps we are taking behind the scenes to strengthen that experience. We are proud to be the first automotive dealer in the UAE to work with Etihad Rail Freight on transporting finished vehicles.”

DUBAI EXPANDS BUS FLEET WITH ZHONGTONG

FLEET

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the induction of Zhongtong electric buses, capable of operating up to 280 kilometres on a single charge, into the emirate’s bus fleet for urban routes.

The development, part of a 735-bus procurement plan that

includes 40 electric units, marks one of the largest and most advanced electric public-bus deployments in the UAE to date. Terming the move as a “milestone in sustainable transport”, the RTA said it reflects Dubai’s accelerating commitment to zero-emission mobility and its broader climate strategy for 2050.

At the heart of this initiative is the Zhongtong electric bus, a 12-metre, custom-designed vehicle tailored to Dubai’s climate and operational conditions. Powered by a 434kWh battery and supported by 360kW ABB fast chargers, the buses can run for 280km on a single full charge, enabling them to cover daily routes without having to return to depots for recharging.

That range on a single charge is a major leap for electric public buses in the region, where high temperatures and intensive daily service patterns have previously limited operational efficiency, said the announcement. The deployment also makes Dubai a first Gulf city to run electric buses at this scale.

new FUSO eCanter light-duty truck in the UAE, with versatile configurations, quick charging times and modular flexibility to redefine urban logistics

The next generation FUSO eCanter has been officially launched in the UAE by the country’s exclusive FUSO distributor Al Habtoor Motors, marking the entry of a fully electric light-duty truck engineered to decarbonise urban logistics and last-mile delivery operations.

Unveiled at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort, Dubai, under the theme “The Future of Commercial Mobility Electrified”, the launch represented a strategic evolution in the long-

standing partnership between Al Habtoor Motors and FUSO, said the distributor, adding that the launch “crossed a defining milestone in the nation’s transition towards sustainable commercial transport”.

Following the formal unveiling, invited media, key customers, partners, and stakeholders from across the commercial vehicles sector took part in an exclusive on-site test drive experience, offering first-hand exposure to the new eCanter’s zero-emission performance in real-world conditions.

The launch marks an important milestone for Al Habtoor Motors”

Proven global pioneer

According to Al Habtoor, the UAE debut of the Next Generation eCanter comes on the back of a strong global track record, with the model having accumulated over eight million kilometres of locally emission-free operation across key international markets, including Europe and Japan.

Drawing on more than five years of real-world customer usage data, the new generation eCanter has been refined to meet the high-intensity operational

demands and climatic conditions of the Middle East, said the distributor.

Ahmed Khalaf Al Habtoor, CEO of Al Habtoor Motors, commented:

“The launch of the new FUSO eCanter in the UAE marks an important milestone for Al Habtoor Motors as we advance our commitment to delivering cutting-edge, sustainable transportation solutions to the market.

“This introduction reflects our strategic alignment with the UAE’s longterm sustainability narrative and Green Transport ambitions, while empowering businesses with future-ready mobility solutions that combine zero-emission technology, operational efficiency and proven global performance.”

Modular flexibility

The Next Generation eCanter comes with an innovative eAxle technology, which integrates the electric motor directly into the rear axle. This compact drivetrain architecture reduces mechanical complexity, optimises space utilisation and enhances overall vehicle efficiency delivering tangible benefits for urban commercial operations.

The new eCanter’s modular battery concept enables fleet operators to tailor vehicle specifications to route length and payload requirements, with three scalable configurations available: Standard, Long and Extra Long Wheelbases. Supporting operational flexibility further, the new eCanter is available in gross vehicle weight classes ranging from 6.5 tons to 8.55 tons, with multiple wheelbase options to suit a wide variety of applications. With a 1,995mm cab width, maneuverability is assured in dense urban environments without compromising driver comfort.

Charging efficiency is optimised through support for both AC and DC charging, utilising the CCS2 standard. With DC fast charging, the battery can be replenished from 20% to 80% in approximately 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the selected battery and charger configuration, minimising downtime and maximising fleet utilisation.

The eCanter also comes loaded with safety features, such as an electric parking brake, multiple airbags, ABS, LDWS, ESP and ABA5, which is a testimony to how much value Fuso places on safety.

CHAMPION LIGHTWEIGHT

Al Shirawi Enterprises brings HEIL Trailer Asia’s aluminium tanker technology to the UAE, targeting safer, more efficient fuel logistics across the GCC

As fleet operators across the UAE and wider GCC recalibrate for tighter safety regulations, rising efficiency demands and the ongoing push toward sustainability, the spotlight is shifting firmly onto specialised trailers. Against this backdrop, Al Shirawi Enterprises has made a significant move to introduce HEIL Trailer Asia products into the UAE market, signalling more than just a portfolio expansion — it reflects a calculated response to evolving industry priorities.

For Santhosh Varghese, Deputy Director, Aftersales at Al Shirawi Enterprises, the partnership represents a convergence of global engineering pedigree and local execution strength. At a time when fuel distribution, aviation logistics and bulk transport are becoming increasingly sophisticated, the collaboration positions both companies to tap into a market that is demanding more from every kilometre travelled.

Varghese is clear that timing is everything. “For Al Shirawi Enterprises, partnering with HEIL Trailer Asia is a timely strategic milestone that elevates our role in the transport sector,” he explains. “We have been appointed as HEIL’s official channel partner in the UAE at a moment when regional logistics and fuel distribution are becoming more sophisticated.”

The collaboration brings together HEIL’s long-standing engineering heritage with Al Shirawi’s on-ground infrastructure. “This collaboration combines HEIL’s 125-year engineering legacy in high-performance tank trailers with our local market expertise and established service infrastructure,” he says. “For us, it means we can offer customers truly state-of-the-art solutions in fuel and bulk transport, all backed by reliable local after-sales support.”

From HEIL’s perspective, the move provides a gateway into a high-growth region. “For HEIL Asia, it represents a trusted local foothold in the GCC at a time when fleet operators here are seeking safer, more efficient equipment,” Varghese adds. “In short, this partnership signals a shared commitment to raise industry standards and deliver best-in-class transport solutions.”

Why HEIL made the cut In a competitive tanker market, brand selection is rarely accidental. Varghese points to HEIL’s technical strengths as the decisive factor.

“We chose HEIL Trailer Asia for our portfolio because of the brand’s unmatched strengths in the tanker domain,” he says. “HEIL Asia is a global leader in designing and manufacturing high-performance aluminum tank and semi-trailer solutions across petroleum, Jet-A1 aviation fuel, AVGAS, chemicals and other specialized applications.”

The appeal lies in tangible operator benefits. “Fleet operators in the Middle East are demanding trailers with lightweight efficiency, proven durability, and advanced safety engineering –and that is precisely HEIL’s forte,” he notes. “Their tankers use high-strength aluminum alloys and optimized designs to dramatically reduce weight, which directly boosts payload capacity.”

That payload advantage translates directly to the bottom line. “This allows operators to carry more fuel per trip without exceeding weight limits, improving productivity and profitability,” Varghese says. “Few brands stand out like HEIL in combining such weightoptimized design with rigorous safety features and a track record of reliability across 85 countries worldwide.”

The addition of HEIL trailers fits squarely into Al Shirawi’s broader growth strategy, particularly in the specialist transport segment.

“This collaboration fits perfectly into Al Shirawi’s long-term growth strategy for specialist fleet offerings,” Varghese explains. “Our vision has always been to be a one-stop solution provider for commercial transport needs in the region.”

By integrating aluminium tankers into its offering, the company moves closer to that goal. “By bringing HEIL trailers into our fold, we extend our product portfolio beyond trucks and heavy equipment into specialized tankers, reinforcing our presence in the fuel and logistics sector,” he says.

More importantly, it allows for lifecycle integration. “In the long run, having HEIL’s advanced trailers under the Al Shirawi umbrella helps us serve fleet customers more holistically: we can supply the truck and the tankers, and support both through their lifecycle.”

Lightweight aluminium tankers

At the core of the partnership is HEIL Trailer Asia’s flagship range of aluminium fuel tankers, now being introduced to the GCC.

“We are introducing HEIL Trailer Asia’s flagship line of lightweight aluminum fuel tankers for petroleum transport,” says Varghese. “These semitrailers are engineered to carry products like petrol, diesel, and even jet fuel.”

The emphasis is on efficiency without compromising robustness.

“Customers can expect a trailer that weighs significantly less than a conventional steel tanker, enabling them to haul more fuel per trip,” he explains. “The design comes equipped with advanced safety fittings, all of which meet international petroleum transport standards.”

For operators, the equation is straightforward: “The new HEIL tanker we are introducing offers higher payload and safer operation for fuel distributors.”

HEIL’s design philosophy—lightweight construction, durability and safety— translates into measurable operational gains, particularly in Middle East conditions.

“The lightweight construction means higher payloads and better fuel economy on every trip,” Varghese says, adding that a trailer that’s “one or two tons lighter allows that much extra fuel to be carried”.

“Over hundreds of trips a year, that’s a huge boost to throughput,” the head of aftersales at Al Shirawi points out.

Few brands stand out like HEIL”

Efficiency extends beyond payload. “HEIL’s aerodynamic tank profile also helps reduce drag on highways, contributing to measurable fuel savings for long-haul operations,” he adds. Durability is equally critical in harsh climates. “HEIL’s use of corrosion-resistant aluminum and high-grade components means these tankers hold up longer in extreme heat and corrosive conditions,” he notes. “Operators will experience fewer

incidents of tank corrosion or structural repairs, translating to less downtime and lower maintenance costs.”

On the safety front, the benefits are immediate. “Drivers immediately notice that the trailer is more stable,” Varghese says. “HEIL’s lightweight, durable, safetyfirst approach directly helps customers by maximizing payload, minimizing operating costs, and safeguarding people and cargo every day.”

Early adopters: fuel and aviation

While the applications are broad, certain sectors are expected to lead adoption.

“We anticipate especially strong uptake in fuel distribution and petroleum logistics,” Varghese says. “Companies that haul petrol, diesel, and jet fuel are likely to be the first movers, because they immediately see the value in higher-payload fuel tankers and enhanced safety credentials.”

The aviation segment is another key target. “The aviation fueling sector will also be a focus segment,” he adds. “Our Bodyshop has already built Jet A1 bowsers for major aviation fuel providers, so we expect those customers to welcome an even more advanced trailer option from HEIL.”

Regulatory tightening and fleet renewal cycles are creating favourable conditions for advanced tanker solutions.

“The Middle East is steadily raising the bar on transportation safety and efficiency, and that directly boosts demand for modern trailers like those from HEIL,” Varghese explains. “HEIL trailers comply with international codes like UN/ADR and DOT for flammable liquids.”

At the same time, operators are rethinking fleet composition. “Logistics companies and fuel suppliers are modernizing their fleets to reduce breakdowns and improve fuel economy; you simply cannot achieve those goals with old, heavy steel trailers,” he says.

The result is a clear shift in purchasing behaviour. “As companies seek to lower the average age of their fleets and adopt cutting-edge technology, HEIL’s offerings become very attractive,” Varghese notes. “Improved safety features lead to fewer incidents, and lighter equipment means fewer trips or less fuel burned.”

Building the support backbone

A key differentiator in the UAE market remains after-sales capability, an area where Al Shirawi is doubling down.

QUALITY AND FUNCTION
Drivers will immediately notice the trailer’s stability, with HEIL’s lightweight, durable, safety-first approach directly helping customers maximise payload, minimise operating costs, and safeguard people and cargo.
COMMITTED TO SUCCESS
Santhosh Varghese, Deputy Director, Aftersales, at Al Shirawi Enterprises, says the partnership represents a convergence of global engineering pedigree and local execution strength.

“Al Shirawi Enterprises will back the HEIL Trailer range with the same robust after-sales infrastructure that our customers already trust,” Varghese says. “This means a nationwide service network across all key Emirates, staffed by trained technicians.”

Support extends across the entire lifecycle. “We are fully integrating HEIL-specific maintenance procedures and stocking genuine HEIL spare parts,” he explains. “Our service centers can handle everything from routine inspections to complex repairs, including specialized aluminum welding and accident damage restoration.”

The company’s Dubai Investment Park bodyshop plays a central role. “We operate a dedicated heavy-vehicle Bodyshop that can accommodate and repair even large tankers,” he adds. “All warranty services will be managed locally, and our 24/7 breakdown support extends to HEIL trailers as well.”

Introducing advanced equipment also requires investment in skills.

“Introducing a high-end product like HEIL trailers goes together with investing

in knowledge transfer,” Varghese says. “We have already arranged intensive training programs for our maintenance staff, guided by HEIL Trailer Asia’s experts.”

The focus is on technical precision. “This includes specialized training on aluminum welding techniques and handling tanker-specific valves and safety devices,” he explains.

Customers are also part of the equation. “We are rolling out dedicated operator training for drivers, focusing

We anticipate strong uptake in petroleum logistics”

on safe operation, routine inspection and daily upkeep of the fleet.”

Looking ahead, Varghese expects sustained growth in the specialised trailer segment of the transport products market.

“We foresee healthy growth in the GCC’s tanker and specialized trailer market,” he says. “As the UAE and neighboring countries invest in infrastructure, oil & gas projects and logistics, the volume of fuel and bulk materials transported will rise.”

Fleet renewal will further accelerate demand. “Many transport fleets are approaching a renewal cycle, and we expect operators to replace older units with newer, higher-spec models like HEIL,” he adds.

Sustainability is another driver. “HEIL’s trailers contribute through weight reduction leading to lower emissions,” Varghese explains. “A higher payload per trip or fewer trips needed translates into less fuel consumed.”

Lifecycle benefits reinforce the argument. “Aluminum construction doesn’t rust and can last longer, and much of the material is recyclable,”

LIGHT-WEIGHT EFFICIENCY

With their aluminium construction leading to weight reduction, HEIL’s trailers contribute to lower emissions through higher payloads per trip, or fewer trips needed, leading to less fuel consumed.

SERVING AVIATION FUELING

HEIL’s expertise allows Al Shirawi to offer best-in-class aviation bowsers, from 5,000-litre rigid units to 45,000-litre semi-trailers.

he notes. “By enabling more payload with less fuel usage and ensuring a long service life, HEIL trailers help operators shrink their carbon footprint.”

Aviation fuelling: a strategic play

One of the most significant opportunities lies in aviation fueling, where Al Shirawi is building a fully integrated offering.

“Our partnership with HEIL Trailer Asia significantly enhances our capabilities to serve the aviation

fueling sector,” Varghese says. “HEIL’s expertise allows us to offer best-in-class aviation bowsers, from 5,000-litre rigid units to 45,000-litre semi-trailers.”

A parallel collaboration strengthens this proposition. “We have partnered with Fluid Transfer International to provide world-class aviation refueling modules,” he explains. “By combining FTI’s systems with HEIL’s fabrication expertise, we can deliver complete, end-to-end aircraft refueling solutions in the UAE.”

Local assembly adds another layer of value. “We can build a refueller from the very start—HEIL provides the tank and chassis integration, and we install the fuel delivery system, all assembled and supported locally,” Varghese says.

For fleet operators weighing investment decisions, Varghese frames the argument in terms of total value rather than upfront cost.

“Upgrading to modern trailers like HEIL isn’t just about acquiring new equipment — it’s about unlocking real benefits: higher payload capacity, safer operations, and lower operating costs per trip,” he says. “Fleet owners should look beyond the upfront price and consider the total lifecycle value.”

Al Shirawi’s role, he adds, is to simplify that transition. “From helping select the right specifications to providing after-sales support that keeps trailers running at peak performance, we stand by our customers at every step,” Varghese concludes. “With HEIL’s proven reliability and our 24/7 support network, we aim to maximize uptime and productivity— ensuring fleets are ready for the challenges and opportunities ahead.”

LOCAL ASSEMBLY ADDS VALUE
Al Shirawi can build a refueller from scratch, installing the fuel delivery system while HEIL provides the tank and chassis integration, all assembled and supported locally.

ENGINEERING THE EDGE: HEIL’S TECHNICAL PLAYBOOK FOR GCC TANKER PERFORMANCE

As HEIL Trailer Asia enters the UAE market, its engineering proposition is built around measurable gains in payload, safety and lifecycle cost. For Nicholas Ling, President of HEIL Trailer Asia Limited, the focus is clear: every design decision must deliver real-world value for fleet operators.

“With over 125 years of engineering heritage, Heil Trailer Asia delivers lightweight aluminium tanker designs that set industry benchmarks for payload efficiency,” Ling says. “By optimising barrel geometry, utilising high-strength aluminium alloys, and reducing unnecessary structural mass, our tankers consistently achieve significantly lower tare weights than traditional steel trailers.”

That weight advantage directly impacts operations. “This allows operators to maximise allowable payload under strict axle-load regulations, directly improving transport productivity and profitability,” he explains. “Our streamlined tank profiles and aerodynamic design reduce drag during long-haul operations, supporting measurable fuel savings.”

Safety remains central to the engineering philosophy, Ling emphasises, explaining: “Safety is at the core of every design decision. Our tankers feature low centre-of-gravity barrel architecture, optimised baffle configurations, and engineered compartment layouts to enhance stability and significantly reduce rollover risk.

“Advanced systems reinforce that stability. We integrate ABS and EBS braking technologies and engineer chassis, suspension and axle interfaces for predictable handling even under emergency conditions. All

PARTNERSHIP OF EXCELLENCE

Heil tankers comply with UN/ ADR and DOT standards.”

Lifecycle economics are another key pillar. “Heil Trailer Asia products are engineered to deliver class-leading total cost of ownership,” Ling notes.

“Aluminium construction reduces corrosion risk, prolongs structural life, and decreases long-term maintenance requirements, especially in harsh climates.”

Ling list the key costsaving advantages as:

• Weight optimisation: Higher payloads and lower fuel consumption per trip.

• Reduced maintenance: Modular components and accessible service points.

• Long-term durability: Highgrade aluminium alloys and premium weld quality.

• Improved uptime: Longer service intervals and reduced downtime.

“These attributes allow operators

to achieve significantly lower cost per kilometre over the equipment’s full service life,” he adds.

Designing for Gulf conditions has required targeted engineering adaptations. “The region presents extreme heat, abrasive dust, high-frequency loading cycles and off-highway routes,” Ling points out. “We have incorporated several adaptations tailored to these environments.”

These include:

• Thermal expansion allowances in tank and mounting design.

• Heavy-duty suspension compatibility for offhighway routes.

• Heat-resistant seals, hoses and gaskets rated above 55°C.

• Reinforced structures for repeated loading cycles.

• Enhanced corrosion protection against coastal conditions.

“These ensure safe, stable and dependable performance across Gulf operations,” he notes.

Validation is equally rigorous. “We follow a comprehensive validation and certification approach to meet international and regional expectations,” Ling says.

This includes:

• Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for stress, fatigue and vibration.

• Hydrostatic pressure testing for structural integrity.

• Road-condition simulations reflecting Gulf environments, backed by over 400 trailers in operation.

• Dynamic braking and stability testing.

• Third-party certification from SGS, TÜV and regulatory authorities.

“Continuous feedback from oil & gas companies and fleet operators further enhances product refinement,” Ling concludes.

“Our goal is to ensure our trailers consistently exceed real-world expectations in the GCC.”

One of the key advantages of the IVECO Daily is its exceptional versatility. We offer one of the widest model ranges in the industry”

Which key segments or trends do you expect to drive growth across EMEA in the next three to five years?

Simone Curti: Looking ahead, we anticipate that growth across the EMEA region will be driven by three main areas: the energy transition, integrated mobility services, and the increasing demand for mission-specific solutions.

The transition towards low- and zeroemission vehicles will continue to be a major growth driver, particularly in urban and regulated environments. Segments such as light and medium-duty distribution, municipal services, and last-mile logistics are rapidly adopting electric solutions. At the same time, long-haul operators are beginning to explore alternative fuels as infrastructure continues to develop.

To support this shift, we are expanding our multi-energy portfolio and working closely with partners to enhance the charging and service ecosystem. This ensures that customers can transition to new technologies with confidence and minimal disruption. Another significant growth area is integrated services.

Today’s customers expect more than just vehicles — they are looking for comprehensive solutions that include maintenance, telematics, and fleet management tools.

By strengthening our end-to-end service offering, we are enabling customers to achieve higher uptime, better cost control, and greater operational transparency.

Finally, there is a growing demand for mission-specific vehicles. Customers increasingly require tailored solutions rather than standardised products, particularly in specialised industries such as construction, logistics, and municipal services. We are addressing this by enhancing our collaboration with bodybuilders, streamlining our order-to-delivery processes, and developing modular configurations that can be adapted to specific applications.

Overall, these trends are not a departure from our existing strategy but rather a continuation of our long-term approach. By combining multi-energy solutions with a robust service ecosystem and tailored offerings, we are well positioned to support our customers’ evolving needs.

SHAPING THE AFTERMARKET

Andre Scholle, Vice President ZF Aftermarket and Head of Region IMEA, outlines how ZF is evolving beyond traditional parts supply, strengthening its remanufacturing footprint, and positioning hubs like Dubai strategically to maximise Mobility Uptime

ZF Aftermarket is undergoing a major transformation. How would you define ZF’s vision for the next stage of the global aftermarket? The global aftermarket industry is undergoing significant transformation. With more than 100 years of experience and a strong leadership position, it can be assumed ZF could simply adapt as the market evolves — but our ambition is greater than that. We believe ZF should actively shape this transformation. Through the products, services, and solutions we deliver, our goal is to influence the future direction of the aftermarket, not just participate in it.

Why is Uptime becoming such a dominant theme for the industry, and why now?

It is becoming increasingly important and now encompasses a much wider range of aspects. When I started in the industry about 20 years ago, the key factors were availability, pricing, and product range. These prerequisites still matter, of course, but expectations have expanded significantly — and ‘Uptime’ is essentially what captures these new requirements. The customer landscape has also evolved. We are no longer speaking only about distributors. The range of stakeholders is widening, and we now talk about fleets and their challenges as well as end users’. It has become a complete ecosystem that we need to consider.

How does ZF define “Mobility Uptime” and what does it look like across commercial vehicles, passenger cars, and off-highway machines?

Mobility Uptime is not merely a phrase, it’s an operational philosophy. I would define it as a holistic concept that brings together all the requirements necessary to keep vehicles running efficiently across every segment. At ZF, our goal is to deliver the same level of excellence across all fields, whether commercial vehicles, off highway equipment, or passenger cars. We are committed to meeting the diverse needs of each vehicle category and setting the benchmark for performance and reliability, which is something I find particularly compelling.

Avoiding downtime is key in the modern world of mobility. What are the biggest drivers of downtime today, and how can ZF realistically solve them?

First of all, we can support customers by resolving issues that arise in their fleets to minimise downtime when failures occur. However, our greater impact lies in preventing vehicle downtime before it happens. This is achieved through structured preventive maintenance and a suite of manual and digital tools designed to identify risks early and stabilise fleet performance. These two pillars — reactive problem solving and proactive prevention — are the core drivers of uptime improvement. Predictive diagnostics and connected systems are central to ZF’s current development roadmap. These technologies complement our broader service and solution portfolio by enabling real time condition monitoring, data driven maintenance planning, and earlier detection of performance deviations, all of which significantly reduce the likelihood of unplanned downtime.

ZF will always retain its German heritage, of course, but the real acceleration in markets like… the GCC must be driven by local expertise”

At present, much of the business activity in my region is still linked to traditional “iron and steel” components. While this remains an important foundation, the next wave of development extends far beyond hardware. We recognise that future value will increasingly come from areas where we historically have less experience — such as digital enablement, connectivity, and service driven technologies. This shift requires focused investment and organizational learning, and although we are in a transition phase, I believe we are progressing in the right direction.

The market in this region has traditionally been a reactive one in terms of maintenance, particularly repair. How do you think a company like ZF can help make a faster shift to the sorts of technologies that you’re talking about?

If you look at the Middle East, and even more so at India, these markets are rapidly becoming masters of their own development. Our presence in these regions and the continuous expansion of our local footprint enable us to support customers more closely and help them actively participate in this growth. This proximity to fast evolving markets is a key area where ZF can create significant value. However, operating in these regions is not always simple, particularly for a company rooted in a traditionally German mindset and organizational structure. This is precisely why we place such strong emphasis on empowering our local teams to lead the business. I firmly believe that you cannot win a development race in the Middle East with a purely German mindset. ZF will always retain its German heritage, of course, but the real acceleration in markets like India, Turkey, or the GCC must be driven by local expertise. Strengthening and enabling these local competencies is therefore a critical part of our strategy.

What makes the IMEA (India, Middle East & Africa) region so important for ZF Aftermarket?

It is extremely important because today it represents our second largest region in terms of revenue. Europe is still ahead, of course, but my ambition is to develop IMEA into our number one region. When you look at the potential and the compound annual growth rates across IMEA, every single country is outperforming Europe. Naturally, our strategic planning and business expansion efforts are aligned with this upward trajectory.

LEADING THE TRANSFORMATION
Andre Scholle, Vice President, ZF Aftermarket and Head of Region IMEA, is driving the change that is enabling ZF influence the evolution of the sector beyond the traditional and into Mobility Uptime.

Where does Dubai fit into your global footprint?

Dubai serves as one of the key centres of gravity for our region. Geographically, it sits at the heart of the IMEA landscape, but more importantly, it functions as an economic hub with exceptional distribution capability and business reach. Its role as a logistics and commercial gateway significantly accelerates regional business development.

It is also an outstanding environment for conducting business, and one where ZF has built a strong and longstanding presence. Our various brands have been active in Dubai for decades, and now, bringing them together under one roof enhances our ability to serve the market even more effectively. This legacy — combined with Dubai’s strategic position — makes it naturally one of the primary centres of gravity for our regional operations.

What are the regional sectors that are growing fastest: fleets, logistics, off-highway, marine?

There are certain sequences and synergies to consider. A significant opportunity for us exists particularly within the passenger car segment. While ZF has a strong reputation for products associated with German or broader European vehicles, it is important to recognise that regional development in the car parts sector is highly diverse and often not focused on Europe. We must adapt our perspective beyond a primarily European approach to

ADDING VALUE TO PARTNERS

ZF focuses on enabling distributor workshops drive value, empowering them to generate stronger demand and create additional business for its distributor partners.

BROADENING THE SCOPE OF REMAN

successfully expand our offerings in nonEuropean markets. Capitalising on this shift will be essential for our continued growth. Additionally, there are sectors where our involvement has been limited thus far, notably in industrial areas. For instance, the African continent presents untapped potential, especially in the off-highway and marine aftermarket sectors. These represent promising opportunities that we have yet to fully explore. Focusing on these areas will allow us to achieve quick wins and drive future success.

How is ZF supporting Gulf fleets facing rising cost pressures and longer machine cycles?

One advantage of our connections with fleets is that we don’t need to start from the beginning. Thanks to our strong focus on service, we’ve already established solid relationships with many major fleets. The fleet industry itself is evolving — not just buses now, but passenger car fleets will also play a role in the future. We already have valuable expertise in working with fleets and supporting them in boosting their uptime. There’s an opportunity to build on this experience, especially as fleet requirements become more complex. Meeting these new, more challenging needs will be our next important step.

Can you share examples of recent partnerships that illustrate this direction?

For example, our largest bus fleet in Turkey has experienced significant growth, and our Bus Connect programs have been well received by fleet customers. In the Middle East, we’ve achieved major business wins with public transport operators due to our new offerings.

How do you work with distributors and workshop networks to improve customer uptime?

Of course, we value our distributor partners through whom we are very well presented across the region. But our business isn’t a traditional buy and sell model. The workshops are a strategic lever, shaping product demand and strengthening the pull from the market. We focus on enabling them to drive value. By empowering them, we generate stronger demand and create additional business for our distributor partners. It’s a balanced push and pull approach — and the workshops are central to its success.

What role does remanufacturing play in uptime and cost reduction?

We currently carry out some limited remanufacturing work at our Turkish facility, but we aim to broaden this scope. In my opinion, there’s no reason to restrict ourselves to remanufacturing; we should also consider manufacturing. Given the region’s capabilities and our established presence, it’s worth exploring the potential for manufacturing here. Beyond just repair or remanufacture, we could assemble and create products that are specifically suited to our regional needs.

So what could be some potential manufacturing bases for ZF in the wider IMEA region – perhaps Saudi Arabia or India?

We already have shock absorber assembly in India and are considering braking components there too. Turkey is also an option, and we’re certainly not ruling out Saudi Arabia. Legal and bureaucratic factors are important to consider for each market. Africa is also worth considering as it offers opportunities for both manufacturing and remanufacturing. Let’s dream big.

How is ZF educating the market about reman vs new? And how do you perceive the market’s views on this matter?

At a recent customer event, we engaged in a productive discussion regarding remanufacturing and its associated sustainability benefits. Many of our customers expressed support for sustainable business development. However, when asked if they would be willing to pay a 10% premium for a sustainable brake pad, you could see hesitation, particularly

Given the region’s capabilities and our established presence, it’s worth exploring the potential for manufacturing here”

due to the additional costs associated with remanufacturing processes.

Ultimately, while financial objectives remain central to our operations, it is essential to strike a balance between pursuing sustainability and achieving turnover goals, especially within this region. Increasing awareness about sustainability among our stakeholders remains a complex task, yet we are observing increased receptiveness among customers.

The complexity in the diversity of our product range presents challenges for training and awareness. Although not all ZF employees possess technical expertise, it is imperative that we invest in training both our customers and our employees on the importance and the difference of sustainability vs new. This enables them to further train others throughout the value chain. Customer education forms a key component of our future strategy, alongside maintaining close customer relationships. Without this proximity to our customers, effective education and training cannot occur. We view customer training as a strategic preinvestment critical to our ongoing success.

From a market perspective, surely ZF would have to go to the customers now, as it’s increasingly becoming such a competitive marketplace?

Many people still choose ZF because of its long-standing reputation — over a century old! Yet, the competition is performing well too.

We can’t remain just a distributor; we must actively shape change in the aftermarket. This involves and adopting a proactive approach to sales, rather than a reactive one. It requires a shift in mindset among employees, many of whom have been at ZF for decades or even generations. Although this transformation can be challenging, it is essential and has already begun, sometimes requiring us to shake things up.

My goal isn’t just to preserve ZF’s legacy for another 10 or 20 years until retirement, but to help drive ongoing transformation, ensuring future generations at ZF can succeed and influence market evolution. It’s important to adopt new perspectives. While European leadership in the aftermarket isn’t finished, Europe is no longer the sole player. That’s why we need a change in perception, and working internationally offers the ideal environment for this. I’m genuinely excited to contribute.

HOLISTIC APPROACH TO EXCELLENCE
ZF’s philosophy is to deliver the same level of excellence across all fields, whether, commercial vehicles, off-highway equipment or passenger cars, meeting the diverse needs of each vehicle category.

VOLVO GAS TRUCKS MILESTONE FOR

Global sales reach 10,000 units as Swedish giant’s gas-powered models show growth in volume

Volvo Trucks has announced a milestone in the sales of its gas-powered trucks with the delivery of 10,000 units globally since the company introduced this technology in 2018.

Announcing the achievement, Volvo Trucks said that its gas-powered trucks are growing in volume as more markets are embracing alternative fuels that enable significant reduction of CO2 emissions.

Last year (2025) was Volvo’s best sales year ever for trucks powered by gas “thanks to leading products and the favourable supply and cost of fuel”, the Swedish commercial vehicles giant added.

So far, the UK is Volvo’s leading market, followed by Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, Norway, and France. New upcoming gas markets include India and Latin America, where volumes are growing steadily.

Volvo’s gas engines are offered in the heavy-duty Volvo FM, FH and FH Aero ranges, and the company adds that they can effortlessly run on conventional LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) or bio-LNG, a non-fossil gas derived from organic waste replacing LNG.

Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks, said:

“Volvo’s gas engine technology is a leading solution in terms of power, torque, engine response, and fuel efficiency, and our customers also appreciate the strong performance, drivability, and overall comfort of our gas-powered trucks. We see substantial potential for gas-powered trucks as an important step on the journey toward zero-emission transport.”

According to Volvo, its gas-powered trucks can travel up to 1,000km on a single tank, making them well suited for long-haul and regional distribution,

Volvo’s gas engine technology is a leading solution in terms of power, torque, engine response, and fuel efficiency”

as well as construction operations. They are a practical alternative to other low-emission solutions at a time when transport operators and freight buyers are seeking more sustainable options.

Volvo added that In several countries, there is already a well-developed network of gas filling stations and rapidly expanding access to bio-LNG. Some examples are Germany, Norway, Finland and Sweden, where all gas filling stations now offer the fuel. This enables many users to achieve CO2 reductions of up to 100% (Well to Wheel). In markets where tax incentives and public support for renewable fuels and low emissions are available, bio-LNG becomes a highly cost-effective alternative.

Volvo’s advanced gas engine technology is derived from its successful D13 powertrain, delivering diesellike performance while substantially cutting CO2 emissions.
