Festive flavours Abu Dhabi residents and visitors alike are in for a treat as the inaugural Abu Dhabi Food Festival opens emirate-wide between February 5 - 2 - 1. Taking the capital’s burgeoning culinary culture to a whole new level, the first ever Abu Dhabi Food Festival will run across the emirate (this includes Al Ain and the Western Region) over two weeks, bringing popular gastronomic events together with new ones to foodies in the UAE. Organised by the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (known as TCA Abu Dhabi), the festival includes the established Gourmet Abu Dhabi as well as new events such Emirati Kitchen and StreetFeast. From fine dining to street food, there’s something for everyone! Here is a quick preview of what to expect:
Gourmet Abu Dhabi: feb 11 - feb 20
This exceptional epicurean event is back this year as part of the Abu Dhabi Food Festival, bringing internationally renowned chefs to our doorstep, while offering special promotions and menus at leading restaurants across town. Learn from the best: Food lovers can look forward to an impeccable lineup of leading international celebrity chefs. Join gourmet masterclasses and gain industry insights from hospitality experts from a star-studded cast of Michelin-starred chefs. Passion for sophistication: Enjoy lavish feasts hosted by a range of the UAE capital’s top hotels, whether it’s chateau dinners with the finest cuisines and best vintages, or themed dinners and other unique dining experiences. Expert-speak Sultan Al Dhaheri, Acting Executive Director Tourism, TCA Abu Dhabi: I think anybody who visits or lives in Abu Dhabi would agree that the F&B standards throughout the Emirate are now incredibly high. The choice and range of cuisine
on offer is vast and the emirate has attracted some of the most influential names in the culinary world.
Emirati Kitchen: Feb 5 - Feb 7
To celebrate the rich local culture, Abu Dhabi Food Festival introduces the very first event of its kind. Offering a taste of genuine Emirati cooking to locals and expats alike, the Emirati Kitchen aims to promote the cuisine of the land as something that everyone can partake of and enjoy. Local learning: Get a chance to learn some of the country’s traditional and most famous dishes. Visitors can expect appearances by the UAE’s most noted chefs who will share the secrets of Emirati cuisine through five culinary workshops at the capital’s top hotels. A traditional shop selling Emirati kitchen utensils and spices, known as Dukan, will also be on offer there. A taste for authenticity: Over three days, festivalgoers can sample 25 traditional and modern Emirati cuisine recipes, to be served up by five noted Emirati chefs and 30 Emirati enthusiasts, in special menus at different venues.

Expert-speak Chef Khulood Atiq, Emirati celebrity chef and TCA Abu Dhabi cuisine consultant: This is a great step forward for the promotion of Emirati cuisine – both traditional and modern. It will be a great source of engagement for all Emirati and expatriate residents and for overseas visitors who will be able to try types of food they have perhaps not come across before.
StreetFeast: FEB 5 - FEB 21
The food truck craze comes to the UAE as the TCA Abu Dhabi, in partnership with Real Food Festivals, brings the region’s very first Street Feast, where international chefs and Emirati street food vendors alike will showcase a diverse range of dishes. Street food, street fun: Experience the latest trend in the culinary industry and indulge in scrumptious bites at affordable prices, served by a kitchen caravan of food trucks from different countries. Stretching across the Emirate, Street Feast will be taking place on the following venues on these dates – February 5-7 at Madinat Zayed, Western Region; February 12-14 at Green Mubazzarah, Al Ain; February 19-21 at Abu Dhabi Corniche. Celeb action: Street Feast will also feature a chef demo theatre which will be hosted by Andrew Dickens and Food Network star Andy Bates. Showing off their exemplary culinary skills are international celebrity chefs, Jun Tanaka, Nichola Smith and John Quilter. Local talents partaking at the demo theatre include Suzanne Husseini and Fatafeat star Andrew Mitchell.
Expert-speak Philip Lowery, Director, Food Market Events Ltd.: The UK, and particularly London, has been at the forefront of a global street food revolution that has swept across cities, transforming the way we eat and improving the quality and excitement of what is available. We are truly excited to be bringing over some of the best examples of UK street food traders to join with and add their experience to a new breed of exciting Emirati street food traders beginning to emerge in the region. Ticket prices for Street Feast start from Dhs20 in the Western Region, Dhs40 in Al Ain, Dhs60 in Abu Dhabi.

Dine out in style From old favourites to newcomers that have become all the rage, there are a plethora of restaurants in the capital to suit all tastes. We’ve picked our favourites to head to, whatever the time of day.

Carluccio’s
Jones the grocer
Carluccio’s, a brand from famed celebrity chef Antonio Carluccio, is a no-fuss café and restaurant that offers a taste of Italy with authentic dishes and friendly service. You can choose to dine inside, within the modern and minimalist space, or outside on the expansive terrace overlooking the mangroves. The menu features typical Italian fare, from antipasti and salads to pasta and pizza; we particularly love the gnocchi sorentina – handmade potato dumplings in a tomato and basil sauce topped with buffalo mozzarella. Everything is homemade here, from the focaccia to the ice cream. You can also browse the food shop, which features traditional Italian goodies including oils and vinegars, pasta-making ingredients and biscuits, as well as gift options such as a Piedmont chocolate truffle set. Call 02-641223
Arguably one of the most popular cafes in town, this deli brand from Australia is bustling from morning to night with diners soaking up the vibrant and contemporary atmosphere. And with six outlets dotted around Abu Dhabi, you’re sure to find one that’s close by. The café specialises in heart-warming, simple food served in a modern yet rustic-style presentation. But aside from the flavourful salads, sandwiches, burgers and pies, this eatery also features a heavenly fromagerie room with international cheeses, a bakery counter with fresh pastries and cakes, a delectable antipasti section with marinated olives and sundried tomatoes, among lots of other treats, and shelves upon shelves of deli produce from homemade jams and vinegars to chocolate and ice cream. The café also retails a wide range of gourmet jams, curds, oils, vinegars, chutneys, mustard and pickles, apart from their organic dairy products. www.cafedalsace.ae.
The One restaurant & cafe Khalidiya
Nathalie’s
twofour54 Park Rotana complex
Started by nutritionist Nathalie Haddad, Nathalie’s café is like a breath of fresh air thanks to its tasty but healthy selection of food. The bright and natural venue feels very welcoming with its oak panels and colourful furnishings. The rotating menu features a small range of salads and sandwiches alongside a daily soup, pizza and two main course options each day. All of the food is on display and ordering at the counter makes it easy for both dine in and takeaways. We love the whole wheat penne with chicken on Tuesdays and the prawn satay skewers on Thursdays. The wraps are also a hit. You could also try the goats cheese wrap with dried figs, grapes and walnuts or the baked falafel wrap with pickles and lettuce. While there is definitely a focus on healthy cuisine, cake, cookies and homemade chocolate bars are still on the menu so you definitely won’t be leaving Nathalie’s hungry! Call 02-4411330
If you can tear yourself away from the home store's tempting décor range, you’ll find a casual, warehouse style café furnished with chairs, tables, clocks and more (all of which are for sale, incidentally). Billed as a ‘gourmet theatre’, the café’s menu is split into sections from opening scenes (allday breakfast) to main attractions (mains) and the grand finale (desserts). The café’s food is always fresh and just as unique as the furniture that surrounds it. Expect the likes of beetrootcured king fish gravlax, Mexican style falafel with orange and basil hummus, Thai vegetable curry and caramelised brioche French toast. Don’t forget to save room for dessert, as the mouth-watering cakes are a must. The One also bakes its own bread, which is available for sale. We love the paleo bread with almond flour, seeds and coconut, a healthy alternative to sliced bread. Call 02-6816500
Café D’Alsace
Spend a morning at Yas Marina and visit this café which brings together flavours from the Alsace region. French, German and Swiss influences are seen on the menu, and you can pick up over 30 varieties of freshly baked breads including rye rolls and Bavarian loaf. A relaxed, casual setting with plush yellow couches, large raw wooden-style tables, plant pots, and Alsatian art on the brick walls, offers a laid-back contrast to the glamorous outdoors. 5

The journey through France continues into the main courses as well, with gourmet concoctions such as the un-missable confit duck leg with braised pork belly, or the simple classic Sole Meunière, Dover sole with parsley potatoes. Le Royal Meridien Abu Dhabi
Following the extensive renovation of Le Royal Meridien, casual dining spot Market Kitchen has become a popular new addition to the capital’s dining scene. Steel shelves that stand out against white brick walls set the tone, complemented by smooth wood panelled flooring and steel grey furnishings. Offering European-style cuisine, the concise menu comprises the usual starters, soups and salads and main courses as well as a selection of raw seafood and ‘simply cooked’ meat dishes – think sea bream, grass fed Welsh lamb chops and milk fed Dutch veal chop – that can be prepared to your liking. Each dish is simple yet creative, with the likes of black truffle and fontina pizza and grilled lamb chops with date onion compote and chickpea fries proving popular with diners. One of the UAE’s most highly anticipated openings, this chic Chino-Latino concept from New York is definitely set to become Abu Dhabi’s hottest spots – as much for its innovative and delicious food, as for its edgy yet relaxed ambience. Whether it’s the elegant sofa seating indoors, or the lovely outdoor terrace complete with beachfront cabanas, the atmosphere is fun and inviting. Their executive chef has created a menu that draws from Cuban classics as well as influences from the Chinese community in Cuba, with dishes like beef skewers with chimichurri sauce, shrimp churros with coconut curry, spicy lobster sofrito with udon noodles, and an un-missable ‘chicarrones’ (a slow-roasted pork belly dish that is given a tasty makeover with chicken) on offer, perfectly washed down by traditional Cuban cocktails like mojitos. Zuma
The Galleria at Sowwah Square
There are some restaurants that just have the ‘wow’ factor and Zuma is one of them. Metal shelves, chunky walls and rustic wooden tables create a nature-inspired atmosphere in the spacious venue. Even on weekdays, it is packed here and there’s a live DJ playing modern lounge music. It’s so cool it’s almost intimidating, until the buzzing atmosphere envelops you and the friendly staff take you on the Zuma journey. Three kitchens – the sushi counter, robata (grill) and main kitchen – serve up Japanese cuisine, but not as you know it. The idea is to order sharing dishes for the table. Each plate is served when it’s ready. The imaginative chefs have fun with their food, borrowing flavours like truffle to put a spin on sea bass sashimi. There are salads, soups, grilled meats and vegetables, tempura, nigiri and sushi. The signature black cod is worth a try, too. There are also plenty of vegetarian options, and the desserts are equally creative – don’t miss the yuzu cheesecake with black sesame base! Call 02-4015900.

Refresh and hydrate with fresh juices and cocktails after a round of golf at Hickory’s, a sports bar housed in the gorgeous Marbellastyle clubhouse of the Yas Links golf club, or head there for delicious pub grub on a weekend afternoon. The restaurant exudes a very masculine vibe, with dark all-wood interiors, and features a menu with hearty international dishes like ribs, cottage pie, burgers, as well as curries and healthy options (marked on the menu) – ideal for a comfort-food kind of dinner. ASK THE CONCIERGE We speak to two of Abu Dhabi's top hotel concierges to find out their recommendations for the city.
Sandra Newman Chief Concierge at Emirates Palace Abu Dhabi For the best views in Abu Dhabi, I would definitely recommend the Observation Deck at Jumeirah Etihad Towers on the 74th floor – the 360-degree view is unbeatable, and you can see everything from Abu Dhabi’s islands to the skyline, and of course, a stunning aerial view of Emirates Palace. A truly exhilarating watersport activity is the JetLev Flying, which is basically a 16kg carbon fibre backpack with a 10 metre hose that can propel whoever’s wearing it, to 10 metres into the air at 40kmph — you really feel like a superhero (gulfwatersports.ae). Anyone visiting Abu Dhabi should visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque for photo opportunities. And to really capture the culture of the UAE, go on a pearl journey excursion (adpearljourney.com) – it’s a traditional dhow boat ride with a local Emirati guide, and you can embark on a journey that takes you through the importance of pearl diving throughout local history. You can even dive for pearls, and keep any you find! Another option steeped in history is the Heritage Village, opposite the Marina Mall, which offers a rare glimpse into history with traditional Bedouin tents and remnants of life in the Bedouin days. To try good Arabic cuisine, Lebanese Flower serves really good Moroccan, Lebanese and Emirati food – go there for shawarmas and hummous with freshly baked bread. Another typical Emirati eatery with a Moroccan touch is Tabouche in the Central Market Souq. If you want to end the trip with a nice romantic dinner outing, I suggest the BBQ Al Qasr at the Emirates Palace Abu Dhabi, which has a secluded gazebo on the beach where you can dine while listening to the waves washing onto the white sand of the private beach.
Belle Ruanran Chief Concierge at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Abu Dhabi One of the most attractive places for tourists is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which has the world’s largest hand-knitted carpet and numerous 24 carat gold chandeliers. You should also visit Qasr al Hosn, the oldest building in the city, which has a permanent exhibition that tells the story of Abu Dhabi, and Emirati heritage, culture and tradition. Manarat Al Saadiyat, located close to our hotel, hosts great art exhibitions too. Those who want excitement should visit Ferrari World on Yas Island, to enjoy the speed of the Formula Rossa ride, which goes at 240 kilometres per hour. When there, also go to Yas Waterworld, and Yas Marina Circuit, to try one of the many Driver or Passenger experiences. Every Tuesday is the Train Yas day, where visitors can go jogging, walking or cycling around the track. When it comes to food, I must say, you will not find better steak in town than at the 55&5th Restaurant and Grill at our hotel, which won the BBC Good Food ME Awards in 2012 and 2013. For a more casual experience, try Brasserie Flo at the Venetian village, The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi – this French Brasserie will remind you of Paris, with its simple food and warm ambience. It also has one of the most stunning alfresco terraces that overlook the Grand Canal in the area. Lastly, a hidden gem worth visiting is Camacho, by the Corniche area in Khalidiya, which serves everything from Japanese to Italian food, and has really friendly service!
