T ALL STARTED so well for Denmark at the 2016 Olympic Games. And then, the winds of fortune changed. Jakob Fuglsang’s unexpected silver in the road cycling on the very first day in Rio had the Danish team dancing the samba with delight – a fantastic beginning to a games that the Danish sports association, DAI, expects to yield at least ten medals. But with nearly a week gone since the opening ceremony took place on August 5, the Danes seem to have stuttered to a bit of a halt, as no medals
have been secured since Fuglsang’s formidable effort. The pressure is slowly mounting, particularly in the swimming pool and on the sailing docks, where the Danes have endured a few early setbacks. Because, while the early exits of Caroline Wozniacki and Jonathan Groth in tennis and table tennis were expected, Denmark’s medals are expected to come via the water. And time is fleeting. and Lotte Friis have all failed to make waves in their initial events. They may not have been their favoured events, but it just means that the pressure is even greater for them to perform in their choice races. Olympic disappointment looms once again for the Danish swim team. In sailing, Denmark’s main medal hopes – Jonas Høgh (men’s finn) and Anne-Marie Rindom (women’s laser radial) – both got off to cold starts. They’ve managed to claw their way back into contention, but they can’t afford any more mistakes. Should they do so, Denmark’s double-digit medal goal will be under threat in earnest.

The good news FORTUNATELY, there’s plenty of action to come and the Danes could very well have had another medal by now had the rowing competitions not been postponed on Sunday and Wednesday due to bad weather. There are several Danes showing good form and at least one medal could be secure over the next few days. There have also been early bright spots elsewhere. The Danish handball team shrugged off a shaky first half against Argentina to romp to victory and then demolish Tunisia. Even the depleted football team could qualify for the knockout stage with a bit of luck. Who knows, could they pull a ’92 and go all the way?
