Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2018

Welcome to a very special edition of Copenhagen Jazz Festival The year is 2018, and this means that Copenhagen and Copenhagen Jazz Festival have been in a relationship for 40 years. We plan to celebrate this in a few ways. We have created a book of posters, recalling the festival’s history in a new way – both visually through the artistic posters from each year as well as via a concurrent run-through of each year’s most important venues and organizers, written by one of the most learned jazz and Copenhagen Jazz Festival historians, journalist Kjeld Frandsen. The book tells the winding and exciting tale of Copenhagen Jazz Festival’s evolution as influenced by the constant and simultaneous reinvention of jazz. Christiane Spangsberg is the visual artist behind Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2018’s original and poetic art poster included in the book. Another celebration of the first 40 editions is the expansion of our traditional activities in Kongens Have, extended from two to nine days with a diverse line-up of gratis concerts, served with organic craft beer from Svaneke Brewery. This year’s international headliners cover a lot of creative ground, from jazzy hip hop with The Roots to British guitar-virtuoso Jeff Beck to Brazilian renditions of classic hits from David Bowie by Seu Jorge and beyond. World music is represented as well, with performances by Rokie Traoré, Mulatu Astatke, Hermeto Pascoal and many others. 2018 also sees a return from one of the very first performers at Copenhagen Jazz Festival 1979, when legend Pharoah Sanders plays two sold-out concerts in Brorsons Kirke.

Jazzhus Montmartre was the most happening place back then. Today, there’s been a decentralisation and diversification of venues. 2017 meant a goodbye to the much-lauded Jazzhouse and a welcome to ALICE – an entirely new venue created by the joint forces behind former venues Global and Jazzhouse. Venues such as La Fontaine, JazzCup, Jazzhus Montmartre, Huset, 5e and KoncertKirken alongside organizers like Cowbell, ILK, Barefoot, Fringe Jazz and Jazz Club Loco continue their tradition of hosting jazz year round. The spirit of jazz has been a natural part of Copenhagen for as long as most locals can even remember, and this is evident not just in the city’s music, but also in the pulsating streets and hearts that make up Copenhagen itself. Copenhagen Jazz Festival has been a vital catalyst and progressor in this ‘jazzification’ for the last 40 years and will continue to be so for years to come. We would like to give a big thanks to our main contributor Nordea-fonden as well as the Copenhagen Municipality, Statens Kunstfond and the many financial foundations enabling a long list of lesser, but equally important special projects. International Highlights

Headlining artists from around the globe Copenhagen Jazz Festival has always been home to a diverse range of the greatest stars in jazz, and the 40th edition is no different. Here is a small selection of Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2018’s many international artists DR Koncerthuset (Koncertsalen, Studie 2) As you approach DR Koncerthuset, a fabulous sight greets you. Designed by the french architect Jean Nouvel, the blue frontage is monumental, yet airy, as if the building had been carved out of the sky. Events at Koncerthuset range widely in terms of size and genre: Jazz greats, symphony orchestras and pop/rock stars spread across its concert halls of varying size. Major international artists such as Anoushka Shankar, Gregory Porter, Dianne Reeves, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Caetano Veloso & Gilberto Gil have all performed here. Jazz by the Sea/Kulturhuset Islands Brygge Set in beautiful maritime surroundings at Islands Brygge, the annual concert theme Jazz by the Sea during Copenhagen Jazz Festival represents one of the festival’s most treasured venues. This year’s certainly no different with a slew of eight great acts, both local and international, ready to enter the stage at Kulturhuset Islands Brygge, seemingly almost floating away on the serene waters of Copenhagen Harbour.

Skuespilhuset The Royal Playhouse was inaugurated in February 2008 - and is The Royal Theatre’s new stage for contemporary dramatic performance. The new Playhouse is beautifully located on the waterfront of Copenhagen's harbour and is already a designated city landmark, planned and projected for over 130 years. The new theatre has a large auditorium and stage, a grand waterfront foyer and a long promenade made of rustic oak planks running alongside the building, connected to the main walkways into the city. Den Sorte Diamant Den Sorte Diamant (trans: The Black Diamond) is the latest addition to The Royal Library of Copenhagen. The Queen’s Hall is the library’s beautiful concert hall, in which various concerts take place year round in the genres of classical and jazz. The concert hall is an official venue at Copenhagen Jazz Festival, is known for its unique acoustics and has a capacity of 4-600 people. Brorsons Kirke Located in the multiethnic Nørrebro, Brorsons Kirke (Brorson’s Church) is a progressive church and the only church in Denmark with a strictly non-classical musical profile. Brorsons Kirke is a relatively new venue at Copenhagen Jazz Festival which joined the festival in 2017 as the host of

progressive concert theme Something Else. This forward-looking attitude continues at Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2018, where the church is home to some of the festival’s most intimate and visionary acts. Pumpehuset During Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2018, the long defunct waterworks Pumpehuset is home to a long list of international acts with a marked emphasis on the young scene in New Orleans, as Fringe Jazz takes over the venue’s sizable indoor facilities capable of entertaining 4-600 people. Prøvehallen & Betty Nansen Prøvehallen in Valby is an intimate venue with a New York-feel and a capacity of 240 seats. Betty Nansens is a theater on Frederiksbergs Allé. Both are curated by Cowbell Music, who hosts visiting artists from the American jazz scene, often in collaboration with Danish musicians, as well as the extraordinary night with Brazilian icon Hermeto Pascoal! Den Grå Hal Traditional venue Amager Bio relocates for one night to Den Grå Hal in Christiania to present legendary funksters Tower of Power on the final day of the festival.

Open Air Highlights Jazz meets the streets Experience the unique atmosphere as jazz takes over Copenhagen’s historic streets, parks and plazas Kongens Have Kongens Have (literally: The King’s Garden) is the oldest park in Copenhagen, founded by the Danish royal family more than 400 years ago. Originally a private royal garden, today the park attracts approximately three million visitors every year, neighboured by the National Gallery of Denmark and the stunning Botanical Garden. Kongens Have is the biggest venue at Copenhagen Jazz Festival measured in both square meters and attendance, drawing spectacular crowds to its annual free concerts on the historic lawns. Pumpehusets Byhave Giving the audience a unique experience of New Orleans culture, Fringe Jazz Fest presents more than 25 concerts in Pumpehusets Byhave during Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2018. The line-up consists of some of the best international and local music sharing roots in ”The Big Easy”, split across two stages – one outdoor, one indoor. Fringe Jazz Fest also presents a wide range of workshops, artist talks, jazz quizzes and other activities at this wholehearted celebration of all things New Orleans. Balders Plads With its stage surrounded by historic buildings and scenic linden trees, the public square Balders

Plads on Nørrebro is a true gem. With its impressive list of free concerts spanning all aspects of jazz with a definite weight put on New Orleans-inspired acts, Balders Plads remains one of the festival’s biggest and most active venues. Curated by Røde Roses Kaffebar, the open air stage is in action all ten days of the festival. Designmuseum Danmark – Grønnegaarden With its unique location in Copenhagen’s historic centre, near tourist attractions, the harbour boats, design companies and galleries, Designmuseum Danmark is a working archive and the entrance to Denmark as a design destination. During Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2018, the old hospital garden Grønnegaarden serves as the picturesque backdrop for the modern concert theme Jazz Remixed. Lindevangsparken/Jazz for Kids Lindevangsparken is a green oasis in the heart of Frederiksberg. The park has recently been renovated and now features both an electronic water playground, areas for playing football and an action playground. Lindevangsparken is yet again home to the theme Jazz for Kids, a recurring series of concerts aimed at children, young adults and their parents and family as well as a more adult-oriented afternoon line-up with a diverse selection of local acts.

Where history renews itself Copenhagen’s buzzing jazz clubs are the driving force in the city’s long history as one of the jazz capitals of the world. Experience the intimate surroundings which continue to attract the hottest names in jazz to this very day Jazzhus Montmartre Jazzhus Montmartre is Copenhagen's historic jazz hotspot, presenting world class live jazz at the original venue at Store Regnegade 19A in the heart of the Danish capital. From 1959-1976, the club made jazz history as the European home for jazz giants Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, Stan Getz, Kenny Drew and many other masters of the 60's and 70's. The first decade after the inaugural Copenhagen Jazz Festival in 1979 Montmartre (now relocated to Nørregade) was the prime festival club with visits by Pharoah Sanders, Sonny Rollins, Jim Hall, Esberto Gismonti and others before closing down in 1991. In May 2010 Jazzhus Montmartre reopened in Store Regnegade. Jazzcup At Jazzcup, right across the street from The King’s Garden, you can buy music, coffee and get a major live experience all at the same time. Jazzcup is a combination of both record store, café and venue and part of the organisation JazzKlubben, which strives to serve as an ambassador for jazz music in Denmark. Jazzcup presents live concerts every Friday and Saturday year round, as well as each day from July 6-14 during Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2018. La Fontaine La Fontaine is the oldest jazz venue in Copenhagen and is legendary for its nightly jam sessions. Throughout the years, some of the biggest stars in jazz have crossed paths with this small and intimate jazz bar in the heart of Copenhagen, per-

forming in its informal surroundings. Residing in Copenhagen’s historic midtown, La Fontaine is no concert hall in size, yet nearly 100 jazz lovers can enjoy the music in this iconic club which presents jazz all year round. Hotel Cecil Hotel Cecil is one of Copenhagen’s new venues, located on a byway to the main shopping street Strøget. Formerly known as Copenhagen Jazzhouse (1992-2017), it carries a legacy as one of the best middle-sized venues in Europe. Today, Hotel Cecil is a nicely decorated club, presenting international jazz during both Copenhagen Jazz Festival and Vinterjazz. Expect excellent sound in the legendary locales in Europe’s jazz capital. ALICE ALICE is Copenhagen’s new powerhouse for adventurous music and is powered by the people and forces behind the former venues Global and Copenhagen Jazzhouse. The two venues had been collaborating for years around a shared passion for presenting a well-curated program, and moved together as one venue on Nørrebro in early 2018. ALICE presents a bold and high quality line-up of global roots, jazz/improv, electronic music, sonic experiments and much more, and their program for Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2018 is no exception. Huset-KBH Huset-KBH (or simply ‘Huset’) is Denmark’s first and largest cultural house founded in 1970. Today, Huset hosts approximately 1,600 annual events, distributed across 5 diverse stages, a cinema, and a board game café. Buy tickets (or find free concerts)

The majority of concerts at Copenhagen Jazz Festival are paid admission, and you will need to buy tickets separately. All official ticket providers can be found via the concerts at Jazz.dk. We encourage you to buy your tickets in advance for all major/headlining artists. Another 400-500 open air and afternoon concerts are free.

Travel like the locals

The easiest way to get around in Copenhagen is by bike or by public transport, so leave the car at home and travel like the locals. The Public Transport of Copenhagen (bus, metro and train) offers a special Event-ticket during the 10 days of Copenhagen Jazz Festival, making the commute between the venues both cheap and easy from 30 DKK. Copenhagen Jazz Festival – round midnight As night falls on Copenhagen Jazz Festival, the many local and visiting musicians usually gather in their preferred hangouts, exchanging tall tales and loose jams in front of a festive audience – Macy Gray, Bill Frisell, Lady Gaga and many others have all been spotted jamming out after hours at places such as La Fontaine, Montmartre and Christiania. The festival can’t make any promises regarding attendance for obvious reasons, but be sure to check out these venues and jams if your festival nights don’t have a strict curfew – you might just find yourself caught up in jazz history!

Abandoned abattoirs and progressive churches – there is no lack of unusual and fascinating venues at Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Here is a small selection to help you get started on your adventure 21st Century Jazz in Skuespilhusets foyer The lobby at The Royal Playhouse is home to a series of concerts during Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2018. Known collectively as 21st Century Jazz, the theme's accompanying artists are all immensely talented musicians and composers, approaching their craft with a historical sense of upheaval. Composition, avant-garde and premeditated experimentation are all keywords here, often joining forces with untamed improvisation to offer a rare glimpse at a multitude of musical futures. 5e & H15 Kødbyen (The Meat Packing District, or literally: The Meat City) on Vesterbro used to be home to Copenhagen’s meat industry businesses and still consists of three separate areas, referred to as the White, Grey and Brown "Meat City" for the dominant colour of their buildings. In recent years, this has changed into a new creative cluster with a happening nightlife, excellent venues and a broad range of high quality restaurants. Located just 100 meters apart the spaces 5e, hosted by music collective ILK Music, and H15, hosted by Barefoot Records, present avantgarde-jazz and experimental music within a broad spectrum of expressions and genres. Plus more than a few artists from the international improv-scene. Christianshavns Beboerhus Christianshavns Beboerhus (trans: Christianshavn’s Communal House) is a living cultural house, open for all and home to a plethora of activities – dance, concerts, open stage, communal meals and much more. KoncertKirken Blågårds Kirke is situated in the heart of Nørrebro and is the first concert church in Denmark, able to be transformed into a unique venue for year round concerts and performances. KoncertKirken (trans: The Concert Church) is used by classical and rhythmic musicians, theater troupes and for other artistic purposes. At Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2018 the church hosts several concerts each day throughout the entire festival, co-curated by young, left-field organizers The Community. BLOX A brand new addition to Copenhagen’s sprawling waterfront, BLOX provides a setting for recreational outdoor urban spaces, playgrounds, homes and cafés as well as a unique forum with room for work, exhibitions, research and reflection. Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2018 is among the first uses of BLOX as a music venue. Byens Lys Byens Lys, a now defunct cinema-turned-venue in Christiania, is a hidden gem among the many stages not just at Copenhagen Jazz Festival but in Copenhagen at large. With its crimson upholstery and old-timey interior, Byens Lys is the perfect place to experience the atmospheric dub jazz of Bremer/McCoy during their ten-night tenure at this summer’s jazz fest. Copenhagen Trashzzfestival The ninth edition of experimental and avant-garde extravaganza, Copenhagen Trashzzfestival, will once again take place in the setting of Lygten Station – a former railway station in outer Nørrebro.

Art poster by Christiane Spangsberg Christiane Spangsberg (b. 1989) grew up in Vejle, but is currently living in Copenhagen. She is a young visual artist, enjoying widespread interest in her art despite having no formal artistic education or gallery, with solo exhibitions in Sydney, London and New York. Spangsberg’s line drawings and characteristic use of the colour blue, often with a clear nod to artists such as Picasso, Matisse and Derain, underline her artistic values – immediacy, improvisation and intuition. Staying in line with this immediacy, Spangsberg most often finds her audience through digital and social media, exposing hundreds of thousands of followers to her own work via Instagram. Originality and imperfection are among Christiane Spangsberg’s artistic goals – the imperfect is a key component for her: “I believe art to be a way of looking into the soul, a way of sharing a part of yourself, a method for selfexpression through a specific medium, but most of all I believe it to be about

having the courage to make mistakes and to stand apart from everyone else.” This year’s art poster frames the grand celebration of the 40th edition of Copenhagen Jazz Festival, which has come a long way from its humble beginnings in 1979 to being one of the world’s largest of its kind in 2018. A weighty reason behind this growth is the festival’s status as a diverse urban festival, evolving and changing in line with the cultural developments in its parent city. Through the years artists such as Per Arnoldi and Tal R, Henrik Vibskov and Kirstine Roepstorff, Evren Tekinoktay and Halfdan Pisket have interpreted the festival as art, and in 2018 Copenhagen Jazz Festival is proud to present Christiane Spangsberg’s beautiful motif as the festival’s official ‘facade’ throughout Copenhagen.
