WE’RE NEVER going to know whether William Shakespeare (see G2 for details of Shakespeare Unplugged, an original play from That Theatre that revisits several of the bard’s works for inspiration) was really the author of all those plays or a brand that one or several writers wrote under.

One popular theory doing the rounds is ‘Oxfordism’, and a swift look at the Earl of Oxford’s CV verifies the claim. He grew up among scholars (conversely he went to Cambridge University), was familiar with court (36 of the 37 plays are partially set there) and Italy (14), was shipwrecked (The Tempest), spent time in prison (Measure for Measure), was wounded by a member of a lover’s family (Romeo and Juliet), and his nickname was the ‘Spear shaker’.

But still, isn’t it more likely that he was at best a contributor and that the plays were collaborative works by the acting group The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, of which Shakespeare was a member? Once

their reputation grew, they probably welcomed submissions (a bit like Mills & Boon, although nobody’s going to be trying to identify any of their writers in 400 years time), which they then used as a springboard for improvisation.

Hamlet could have been the result of a chance encounter with a drunk Danish sailor: “So, there’s this prince, hic, and he’s to be, sorry not to be … for fanden, this tavern’s in a rotten state.”

Talking of pubs, have you checked out Sankt Nicolai Restaurant and Pub (see G9 for details) on Nikolajgade in the city centre, because despite its name, it has an extremely strong claim to be the most authentic English boozer in Copenhagen thanks to its darts board, banter in the bar and sports lounge, and the best Yorkshire puddings in town. Judging by the effort made at its official opening in January it deserves to be a success, so make sure you pop in for a pint or two next time you’re in town – particularly as there’s a special offer for anyone with a copy of the current newspaper.

Perhaps that might be for a sneaky half during Fastelavn (see G3 for details), or some of the ongoing children’s half-term activities (G9), because as the bard himself might have said, measure for measure it’s the best place for a winter’s ale.

Shakespeare Unplugged

Directed by the experienced Shakespearian director Barry McKenna, the play is a new way of understanding the playwright and poet’s universal appeal.

Shakespeare Unplugged is the latest production from That Theatre, which under the leadership of Ian Burns has for many years been bringing top quality English-language theatre to audiences in Copenhagen with two plays a year (one in the spring, one in the autumn).

Their choices tend to have small casts - recent examples include The Zoo Story, Oleanna and The Collector – and this play is no exception, featuring just three actors ... unless you include the audience, which this time around are very much part of the play.

Penned by the actors and director, Shakespeare Unplugged takes place in a pub during a football match between England and Denmark. Two old English friends, Derek and Jon (Burns and Andre Jeffers, a regular of the Crazy Christmas Cabaret), meet up to watch the

game. The game is about to begin when suddenly there is a power cut. Desperately searching for the game on an old radio, they stumble across a broadcast of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and good old Shakespeare begins to work his magic.

Realising they will have to make their own entertainment, Derek and Jon decide to help an unwilling Karl (Adam Brix), the barman, by teaching him how to woo his Rosalind in Shakespearean style. This leads to the performance of several love scenes from Shakespeare’s best-loved plays including Romeo and Juliet, Richard III, Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and even Macbeth.

According to director Barry McKenna, the play isn’t just a compilation of Shakespearean scenes. “The red thread is a love story of our time at a venue we can all relate to - a bar in Copenhagen,” explains McKenna. “It shows we can fall back on our age-old ability to entertain ourselves when we lose electric light, TV and PC. When our safety nets are taken from us, we are forced to communicate and make impressions on our fellow man.”

The audience plays a major role in the play.

Not only are they on the same stage as the actors – a phenomenon not unknown in Shakespeare’s day, after all, all the world’s a stage – they are also encouraged to take an active role in the plot. “The audience is a crucial element

Indeed, it’s currently the second most performed opera in the world, trailing only behind The Magic Flute. See it once and you’ll understand why. CS

and functions as a character in any Shakespeare play in my humble opinion,” says McKenna.

“It needs an audience to play to, to spar with, and to bounce off of to create a relationship with.”

Shakespearean quotations such as “To be, or not to be” and “O Romeo, Romeo, Wherefore art thou Romeo?” are some of literature’s most celebrated lines. However, many expressions that we use every day originated in Shakespeare’s plays. Shakespeare is credited by the Oxford Dictionary with introducing nearly 3,000 words into the English language. “We have a segment where we quote all the idioms of Shakespeare still in use today like: lie low; playing fast and loose; don’t stand on ceremony; dead as a doornail,” enthuses McKenna.

As the play takes place in a fictional bar, you might as well just stay for a drink afterwards.

“We want the experience to be entertaining foremost, but in a lighter way educational,” says McKenna. “In light of that we will encourage the audience to send us texts before the show and will address their questions if they stay for an after-drink.”

Not that Shakespeare would approve. As the master himself once said: “I have very poor and unhappy brains for drinking. I could well wish courtesy would invent some other custom of entertainment.”

The dramatic acuity of the playful plot, the libretto’s virtuoso treatment of the legendary material and the clear perspective on the characters created by the music have all justifiably given Don Giovanni a special place in the history of the arts. Highly influential on subsequent generations of artists, philosophers and critics, the legend of Giovanni has stirred audiences since its 1787 premiere, and is one of the 20 most-performed operas to this day. The Woman without a Shadow

Often compared to Mozart’s The Magic Flute, it is now widely considered Strauss’s magnum opus. It’s true you’d have to be impressively well-read to appreciate all its references. But one mustn’t sit through it like a lecture as there is no great message. KRG

Fastelavn events

Various locations across Greater Cph; Sunday Feb 19 THIS WEEKEND the Danish tradition of Fastelavn is taking place all over the city. The day, which always occurs seven weeks before Easter, is sometimes described as the Nordic Halloween as children dress up in costumes and get treats. One of the main events of Fastelavn is to ‘hit the cat out of the barrel’ (slå katten af tønden). In old days there was an actual black cat inside the barrel, and beating the barrel was superstitiously considered a safeguard against evil.

But don’t worry, there’s no actual cat in the barrel today, only sweets and oranges. The one who knocks down the bottom of the barrel becomes the ‘queen of cats’ and the one who knocks down the last piece of the barrel becomes the ‘king of cats’.

Other Fastelavn traditions include eating the special Fastelavn bun with cream inside and icing on top, and also making a ‘Fastelavnsris’, a kind of whip made out of twigs that you decorate with paper cats and other things.

So here are just a few of the events going on. Remember that most churches around Copenhagen also hold events - so check out their Sunday programme at your nearby church.

The event includes a welcome speech by Pia Allerslev, the deputy mayor for culture, who will also be the first to hit the barrel. There will be gifts for the kings and queens as well as free Fastelavn buns and hot chocolate for the first 250 children, and there will be entertainment by the happy balloon pirate who will make balloon animals for all the kids.

Dress up and eat sweets

The day includes hitting of the barrel, Fastelavn buns, hot chocolate and coffee in the cosy café.

The beating of the barrel will take place outside in the courtyard, and there will also be the chance to buy old-fashioned sweets and toys from when your grandparents were kids.

There’s no focus on the best costume; here everybody is the same, and you get a small bag of treats after the kings and queens have been announced.

The programme is introduced by the actor Brian Samsboe.

ByOasen i De Gamles By, Agnes Henningsens Vej 7, Cph N; Sun 11:00-14:00; free adm; www.byoasen.dk; all ages Dress up and bring your own lunch for this event that begins with the hitting of the barrel at the hen yard, and then after the kings and queens have been crowned, the day continues at Orangeriet (the big greenhouse).

Here you get the chance to make your own environmental friendly ‘fastelavnsris’, and play special Fastelavn games including a sack race and one that involves biting into a bun. You can also get your face painted like a tiger, a butterfly, or something else.

He is best known for his Chieftain Chair design, created in 1949. BF

In addition to her paintings, Davidsen works with charcoal and ink drawings, ceramic jars, and prints, among other materials. BF

The media arts group Chamber of Public Secrets presents a photographic archive made up of snapshots of daily life from 1950 onwards donated by immigrants, organised under the themes: Refugee Centres, Community, Individuals, and Generations. BF

F YOU ARE familiar with the French electronic, shoegaze music of M83, you are most likely deeply familiar with it.

This type of music usually lends itself to a more intense, cultish following than a passive semi-interest. If you were once intrigued by M83, you are probably now obsessed. However, if you either haven’t heard of them or never became deeply involved with their music, just know that it’s ethereal, emotional, euphoric, atmospheric and mystical. M83 is an experience.

In 2003, Frenchmen Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau enjoyed international acclaim for the album Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts. Fromageau departed the line-up after the second album, looking to pursue solo work instead, and Gonzalez returned to the studio for a follow-up record. His latest and seventh album, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, Dreaming arrived in October 2011.

Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming is as hyperbolic and over-the-top as one might imagine an M83 album to be. It’s a double album, for starters. And though the entire album could easily fit on a single CD, it’s narratively constructed to be a sprawling collection, two acts in competition with each other for the most thrills.

per. “One side is the spirit of the young boy, and the other side is the spirit of the young girl. It’s like how brothers and sisters are different people, but connected by blood and mind. Each track has a sibling on the other disc.”

American music website Pitchfork bestowed the album with its ‘Best New Music’ award and gave it a rating of 9.1/10, describing it as “the best M83 record yet”.

Like other well-known French electronic bands, such as Phoenix or Daft Punk (who avoid the spotlight by wearing masks), M83 is known to be relatively shy onstage.

“It’s hard. We’re coming from France - we never did anything right in rock ‘n’ roll,” Gonzalez told Pitchfork. “Maybe we don’t feel as confident as bands from America or the UK because it’s not our culture. Being a French musician and touring in the UK or America is very intimidating.”

Luckily things have improved and his stage fright seems to have disappeared.

“During the last two years I’ve been touring a lot and putting my shyness away,” Granduciel told American website AV Club. “The experience of me touring brought a lot of confidence in myself. I’ve been touring with bands like Depeche Mode, The Killers, and Kings Of Leon, and seeing them perform onstage taught me how it’s important to be confident with yourself when you’re onstage.”

Gonzalez tends to record his music mostly on his own, but during live gigs a full band accompanies him, making his performances just as magnificent and grandiose as his recorded material.

This will be M83’s first gig on Danish soil. So hurry up, we’re dreaming!

Chairlift

Lille Vega; 21:00; 130kr Kicking off the beginning of a busy weekend for Vega, the Brooklyn-based electro-pop duo Chairlift will be making their debut appearance in Copenhagen.

Caroline Polachek’s sweet vocals paired with Patrick Wimberley’s busy hands have put their electronic gurgles in good favour with listeners on both sides of the pond. Branded as electrodream pop, their subtle usage of ‘80s electronic instrumentation gives their signature sound a retro feel, epitomised by their top hit, ‘Bruises’, a tune used for an iPod commercial in 2008. Their third record, Something (2012), was just released a few weeks ago.

SUNDAY 19

The Maccabees

Lille Vega; 20:00; 180kr Another band on their way up, The Maccabees have gradually progressed from a mediocre indie-rock group to being one of Britain’s proudest offsprings.

Similar to their countrymen Mystery Jets, their eclectic discography taps into British pop-rock’s various shades. From huggable numbers such as ‘Toothpaste Kisses’ through to bittersweet songs such as ‘Ayla’ – the latter from their third studio-album, Given to the Wild, released just over a month back – they’re a group with depth: not churning out numbers to the whims of the industry.

The William Blakes

Amager Bio; 20:00; 185kr In a special concert brought to you by one of Denmark’s most favoured and established bands, The William Blakes and yet to be named guests will be celebrating Fastelavn. Towering above many other Danish acts of a similar ilk, their dreamy, palpable and wavy concoction of electro, pop and indie-rock is still as alluring as ever. What’s more, their lyrics are imaginative and wistful, as expected given they have taken their band-name from the 18th century English poet William Blake. Proceeds go to the Haitian-based charity Partners in Health to support their relief work in the country.

TUESDAY 21

Tycho

Loppen; 21:00; 90kr The San Franscisco-based photographer, music producer and designer Scott Hansen (aka Tycho) is renowned for his low-key ambient soundscapes. Releasing his fifth electronic creation last year, Dive (2011), his compelling mixes continue to maintain their crisp aesthetic and are evocative of his clearly deep understanding of how to measure out sound with tranquillity and energy in mind.

The listening experience Tycho is obviously seeking is one for highquality earphones and introspective walks. Hearing this stuff performed live is something not to be missed this week.

High Places

Loppen; 21:00; 100kr Originating from Brooklyn, the duo of musical alchemist Rob Barber and vocalist Mary Pearson blend music’s multifarious genres to a point beyond recognition.

Their mish-mash, multi-instrumentalist approach yields Sleigh Bells-esque beats frothing with danceable melodies. The sound of their most recent album, Original Colours (2011), included a plethora of instruments borrowed from a bulk of musical traditions: from 12-stringed guitars and household objects through to shakers, rattlers and plastic bags.

If you’re up for something a little on the wild side, High Places are definitely your gag.

Drone; Thu (Feb 16); 22:00; Free Adm For a two-piece band, Battle Bossanova make a lot of noise.

Comprised of Danes Ulrich Frydensberg and Jacob Koefod, their simple, heavy-sounding brand of garage is on the verge of grunge and tainted with a flavour of ‘90s Americana. Worth seeing if you’re in the Nørrebro area. For those looking to take the night deep into the early hours, psychopop’s DJ Gul will keep you on the move until 05.00.

XPECTATIONS were high from the very beginning as the Swedish electronic act du jour, Little Dragon, took to the stage at a sold out Vega on Tuesday night. Following in the footsteps of fellow Swedes Nikki And The Dove, who played the venue back in January, vocalist Yukini Nagano and her band delivered a performance that will be remembered by all present for many years to come.

Having rescheduled the show from November to February on account of illness, Little Dragon had plenty to live up to.

As such, the crowd was anything but partisan to begin with, but hearts were melted and feet were shuffled by the end of the show.

The proceedings kicked off in lighthearted fashion, as a mix of older gems off albums such as the eponymous Little Dragon debut album and 2009’s Machine Dreams filled the packed hall.

The Swedes more than made up for cancelling their November date

Aided by top-notch acoustics, Yukini Nagano seemed completely at ease, brimming with exuberant waves of confidence that saw her drift dreamily into hypnotic, trance-like states with her eyes closed and her hand elegantly swinging a tambourine back and forth.

As time wore on, the Gothenburg-based band showcased some of their longer tunes, along with new material off their 2011 critically acclaimed album

Ritual Union, many of which featured lengthy improvisations that stretched on almost symphonically before weaving into more upbeat pastures towards the end of the show.

By the climax of the twohour performance, Nagano’s voice and the instrumental cacophony backing her vocals had worked wonders on the Valentine’s Day crowd, who by this point had long since killed their inhibitions.

Little Dragon preluded the curtain call with a virtuoso performance of the sentimental (and on the night, rather fitting) ‘Twice’, which triggered more than a few embraces amongst the crowd. Five years after they took the world by storm, Little Dragon only seem to be getting better as the years roll on – an assertion Tuesday night’s outing proves with a fair bit of authority.

Deemed as one of the most influential figures in the underground dub-step scene – originally starting out on East London’s pirate airwaves – he

Falconer Salen; 20:00; 340kr Forming in Northern Ireland in the mid-‘90s, the five-piece alternative light rock group went on to become one of the British Isles’ biggest bands in history – with their record Final Straw (2003) going multi-platinum and the band being deluged with music awards thereafter. Now back with their sixth studio record, Fallen Empires (2012), the sobering rock outfit are back in the limelight, making their second visit to Denmark in just a few months after playing an acoustic set in late November for radio station P3.

Foreign Beggars

Lille Vega; Sat 23:00; 130kr Not so much a gig as it is one for Copenhagen’s clubbers, Foreign Beggars are responsible for the creation of a volatile mix of dub, speed garage and hiphop elements that is now universally known as dubstep. The London-based outfit have been active since the mid-90s and have played a significant role in the growth of the movement.

In short, they are nothing short of legends on the drum ‘n’ bass scene. Playing for the first time in Copenhagen in the wake of their new EP, I’m Hard Over You (2011), it’s going to be a messy night given their ferociously energetic live sets.

Some read as a narrative: short stories detailing the day lived in a home away from home, or articles that provide the reader with an opportunity to sit down and find reassuring familiarities on the screen. A sense of camaraderie between the reader and writer built upon city walls and shared experiences - be they welcoming or at times challenging. They’re an excellent alternative to the Sunday newspaper supplements that are so hard to find on foreign shores.

The ‘mummy blogger’ has traditionally been a valuable resource for parents keen to discover places to go with small children. Copenhagen is such a wonderful city for a family day out thanks to a great many places to visit, but which are the best and where are they? AFTER THE one-year mark most foreigners in Denmark start complaining about three things: the weather, the taxes and the poor customer service at Netto.

But if you’re from Blighty or one of its colonies, you’ll have a fourth complaint: a lack of decent English boozers.

Enter Sankt Nikolai Pub and Restaurant: a friendly English boozer for friendly English boozers. There aren’t many places you can drink a great cider, throw a few darts, and then retire to read some British papers and enjoy a Shepherd’s pie.

It’s this exact atmosphere that owner and proud Englishman Martin Popplewell is aiming for. After concluding “there was no such thing as an English pub in Copenhagen”, Popplewell purchased this historic 1730s building and set about bringing a slice of Britain to the land of Carlsberg.

Bar manager Jon Nunn will set you up with a great pint - he really knows his beer. Whilst remaining loyal to its British roots, Sankt Nikolai offers German and Danish beers as well. Eleven different kegs are on offer as well as bottled beer.

The best-selling brews are the Caledonian’s Twisted Thistle IPA and St Georgan Bräu Keller Bier, served in a Bavarian ceramic pot. Proper Job from St Austell’s brewery in Cornwell also goes down pretty smooth. Made with Cornish spring water, it’s a powerfully hoppy drink with a tonne of flavour – a quality ‘taste of home’.

And what pub would be complete without its grub? These guys boast Cornish pasties, Shepherd’s pie, Cottage pie

Catch a thief or become a criminal child

The service from bar manager Jon Nunn and owner Martin Popplewell is second to none

and arguably the best Fish ‘n’ chips in town. As a patron who’s tried the Fish and chips, I must say they are some of the best I’ve had in Copenhagen. A great piece of cod with a good helping of chips and of course mushy peas – and while I come from a colony where the mushy peas aren’t mandatory, I know those from the motherland will love these.

And don’t forget the Sunday roast.

The roast alternates between beef, pork, lamb, turkey and chicken. And of course it’s all served up with home-made Yorkshire puddings (these really are too good!).

If you’ve got a few ankle-biters at home and you’re reluctant to venture out to eat with them, never fear because the last Sunday of every month is ‘family day’.

Featuring an open Sunday roast buffet and free rein on the Xbox, what better place for kids to while away their Sunday?

And did I mention that kids up to eight eat for free?

Did you know that Danish werewolves ate cattle and horses and that the mermaids weren’t half fish but half seal? On this special walk through the park you will get to learn more about trolls, and other tales from Danish folklore. The walk lasts for about an hour and 15 minutes - meet in front of the entrance to Østre Anlag at the corner of Oslo Plads and Stockholmsgade. MSØ

Tom, Dick or Harry, there was space to move about. Popplewell has tried to create two levels, each with a different focus.

“Upstairs is for fidgeters, downstairs is for talkers,” he explains. Upstairs features a great sport lounge where you can watch the footy, relax into a game of darts or request to play some table tennis.

And while good pubs need their locals, it must be said that a good pub also needs to have friendly staff. Popplewell and Nunn really make this place what it is.

They enjoy running the pub and it reflects in the way they treat those that visit. I’ve never been to another pub where the owner and manager are keen to sit down with you for a few hours and enjoy a few laughs over a pint or four. On occasion they have been known to do impromptu sketches for patrons to enjoy … it’s no globe theatre but it does border on Fawlty Towers.

IF A STRAWBERRY is to summer what an apple is to autumn, then an orange is most certainly symbolic of winter. When I see them, I instantly feel better. I don’t know what I’d do without citrus to get me through these dark winter months. It provides a shock to the senses that we need at this time of year - a powerful reminder that warmer days will come again.

Add the element of pie and now we’re really talking. Marrying citrus with its creamy goodness makes for one dynamic duo. What’s more, this pie is beyond easy because it uses a biscuit crumb crust instead of the flaky variety. In the US we call it a graham cracker crust, but I’ve

actually never seen them here.

Digestives make a fine substitute however.

With a mere five ingredients, this is a dessert you can make in no time. In fact, bar the sweetened condensed milk, I bet you already have the ingredients at hand.

Don’t have oranges? Grapefruit, lime, or lemon work great too. Just be sure to use freshly squeezed juice. It truly does give the pie more flavour depth.

Another reason to make this dessert is that you can have it done in under 30 minutes.

That’s how long it takes to organise your sock drawer. And let’s face it, socks don’t taste quite as good as pie.

250 g digestive biscuits 75 g melted butter 3 eggs 1 can sweetened condensed milk (+/- 300ml/g) 120 g fresh squeezed orange juice (or lemon, lime, grapefruit juice) 10 g grated orange zest 10 g candied orange peel (optional) Coconut Whipped Cream 1 can very cold full fat coconut milk (refrigerate the day before using) 10 g sugar 10 g rum (optional) 5 g cornstarch (optional) SET OVEN to 180 °C. Crush 250g of digestives into fine bits.

Add butter to crumbs and stir until completely moistened. Mould crumbs into your plate/tin. Press them down as firmly as possible.

Bake for 5-8 minutes or until light golden brown. Remove and cool.

Beat eggs until frothy (1-2 mins). Add milk and mix well. Incorporate orange juice and zest (and candied orange peel, if using).

Pour mixture into pie shell, add a little more orange zest to the top, and bake 15-20 minutes, just until the centre is set (no longer wobbly).

Remove from oven, cool, refrigerate.

Prepare whipped topping. Open coconut milk and remove hard, creamy part on top. Whip until fluffy. Add sweetener (and rum, if using) and beat again until thick and creamy. To give your whipped cream added shelf life, add a small spoon of cornstarch; it should keep a day or two in the fridge.

Serve pie with a dollop of coconut whipped cream.

There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. From the fish and chip expat family nights at 17:00 on the last Friday of every month, to enjoying the Sunday roast (lamb, all the trimmings, just 99kr, kids portion for 58kr), they are always welcome. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day - serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, and upstairs there’s a new lounge area, which is the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits.

Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH

BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. SUNDAY BRUNCH

MADSVINET is a new restaurant opened on Enghavevej 58, just by the beautiful Enghaveparken and at the end of infamous Istedgade. Istedgade has gone through massive changes in recent years, and Madsvinet’s ‘rustic gourmet’ menu exemplifies the combination of roughneck Copenhagen attitude and connoisseur quality that is beginning to characterise this part of the city perfectly.

It’s biting cold. You don’t feel like leaving the flat for even a minute, but seeing the big windows at Madsvinet filled with candlelight, dancing shadows and thrilled faces: you’re happy you did.

Madsvinet has installed a small curtain area just by the entrance. The thick, black curtain creates a space just between the outside and inside - a breather to prepare the senses. In this little nook, your sense of sight is impaired, and the contrast to the outside combined with the anticipation of the inside is even more spectacular. There are sounds of joyful murmuring and subtle laughter, and sweet scents of jasmine complemented by the masculine presence of the grill. Warmth.

Welcome to Madsvinet.

After hanging our coats on the designated coat-hooks (adjusted meat-hooks from the old butcher’s), we are seated close to the open kitchen that constitutes the far end of the restaurant.

The menu is simple and very appealing: eight dishes, one dessert. The owner Rolf, who is also the head chef, tells us they aim to change the menu once a month, adapting to the seasons and giving the chefs room to experiment. The wine list is splendid. It’s a fine selection of mainly Italian wine, complemented by the possibility of cocktails.

We order and prepare for the obligatory teeth-grinding waiting for the food we’ve just ordered. But not this time. After having taken our orders, the waiter returns with two small pieces of finely sliced rye bread, toasted and topped with a delicious crab salad. Sensing our delight, Rolf returns with two glasses of cava, pours and explains that he really loves the element of surprise and generosity embedded in the tapas mentality of southern Spain. I couldn’t agree more. During the evening, we get served various small pieces of the super crisp rye with a wide arrange of fantastic toppings. Unexpected and delicious.

For starters we ordered the ‘Mussels and pasta in coconut and white wine’ and the ‘Braised swine with apple, onion and a puree made of parsley root’. With the pasta and mussels we enjoyed the Wittman Silaner 2010, which perfectly matched the creamy subtleness of the mussels and the fruity hints of coconut.

For our main course we chose grilled fish and meat: Zander and Texas Angus.

Breathtaking! My dish, the Texas Angus meat, pureed cauliflower and baked carrot served with a red wine demi glace, was prepared to perfection. It was a red, juicy, salty, taste-bud melting experience. While the Zander was crisp on the outside, creamy within and accompanied by beetroots, hazelnuts, broccoli and a lobster sauce.

An exquisite plate of cheeses then followed the amazing main course, preparing

the system for dessert. The amazing chocolate mousse and pineapple duet completed the evening with style. We enjoyed them with the delicious Chateau de Passant, 2010, which bridged the sweet and sour combination sublimely.

Now, Madsvinet might have opened in turbulent times, but with quality, ambience and style like this, we predict a very bright future for Rolf and his crew at the old butcher’s on Enghavevej.

h, George Clooney. The humour, the charm, the smile. That silver fox is at it again in The Descendants.

Because if you like Clooney, then get ready. This film gives you a large dose of that good old Clooney persona.

The Descendants is based on a novel of the same name by Kaui Hart Hemmings. The title of the film and novel refers to the descendants of the Princess Ka’iulani of Hawaii and naturally, the film takes place on the island paradise. The main character, Matt King (Clooney), has such a grand background, yet his problems are the same as everyone else’s - for the most part.

King is the sole trust holder over a large, untouched piece of land in Hawaii. The trust is set to dissolve in seven years and the many descended cousins of the princess are trying to decide what should done about it. The general agreement is to sell the land to developers who want to build condos.

King also seems okay with this decision.

The real problem is that King’s wife is in a coma after a boat racing accident. At first he goes through remorse and despair, promising to be a good husband. He also doesn’t know how he will move forward and take care of their two daughters.

But then the plot thickens. It turns

Up in the air about George: despite the nominations, Clooney delivers a performance we’ve seen many times before out Mrs King had been having an affair before her accident. King goes on an emotional rollercoaster after that.

The actions he must take in order to move forward are not always easy, but ultimately he manages the best he can.

Clooney is at his finest and yet the performance given felt like a performance seen many times before. The children, especially the eldest daughter (Woodley), gave strong and believable performances.

The characters are all well written and have something deeper to reveal, which adds flavor and intrigue. These

are not stereotypes we are dealing with. One gets the feeling that what we see is only a taste of who these people are: that the characters have real motivations and backstories. This creates a nice dynamic where one is never entirely sure which direction the film will go in.

The Descendants is charming and beautiful, with both its funny and sad moments. It has unexpected elements and a relatively unique story. All in all, it is an enjoyable film to watch.

been nice if Hawaii and the land deal played a bigger role.

For example, how do the cousins feel about selling the land that they inherited? Why do some of the cousins have conflicting ideas about who to sell to? The reason the cousins are pushing to sell is that they were irresponsible with their money and now they need this in order to be wealthy again. How were they irresponsible?

These are the details that were missed or brushed over. After all, it would have been nice to know more about the descendants.

Much of the voiceover felt heavyhanded and unnecessary. Using voiceover with book-to-film adaptations is pretty common, because the mediums are so different. But it is better to show, not tell.

The point of the film was that everyone everywhere has the same problems; therefore the film did not focus that much on the land deal. It was certainly a unique situation and even the affair was dealt with in a unique way, yet the overall story was fairly simple. Hawaii is featured in the details and in the background. ou shouldn’t really name your film Safe House if your poster tagline is “Noone is safe”. But apart from that little criticism, there isn’t much to complain about. Daniel Espinosa’s action thriller fulfils all the requirements of this genre

– it’s fast-paced, action-packed, and gripping.

The film takes place in Cape Town. Denzel Washington portrays Tobin Frost, a rogue CIA agent in possession of delicate government secrets, who gets caught and transferred to a safe house. It’s manned by Matt Weston (Reynolds), a rookie agent itching for a real assignment.

The safe house is later attacked by unknown baddies and Reynolds’ character takes upon himself to transport the prisoner to safety. Somewhere along the way, however, Matt realises that not everything is as clear-cut as he thought and doesn’t know whom to trust - his bosses seem to be hiding something. The two protagonists are forced into

an uneasy alliance. The supporting cast (Brendan Gleeson, Vera Farmiga, Sam Shepard and Liam Cunningham) play rather stereotypical characters, but the actors manage well enough with what they have.

One thing that really deserves a separate paragraph is the presentation of fights and violence in general. Usually, it boils down to the unrealistic: hero gets hurt, hero gets up, hero walks away unscathed. Safe House is the exact opposite. The punches hurt, the blood is real, and shattered glass is painfully sharp. In this film you won’t see miraculous recoveries. Once shot, it is unlikely that the character will recuperate.

Don’t expect many surprises

from Safe House and you’ll definitely come out of the cinema feeling satisfied. Thankfully though, it avoided being completely formulaic. It provides some breathers between all the crashes and explosions. They allow the audience to get an insight into the characters’ motives, and the actors to show some ... acting. That said, those scenes are still few and far between; the main focus is action.

If you’re a fan of good, dynamic directing, Washington’s darker, more menacing characters, and Reynolds’ bruised face, you will like Safe House.

The Darkest Hour was predictable and predictably bad and will leave audiences feeling confused and frustrated. ED

My Week With Marilyn (3) Dir: Simon Curtis; US drama, 99 mins; Michelle Williams, Eddie Redmayne, Kenneth Branagh Williams captures the innocence, flirtation and insecurity of Monroe very well, delivering a complex performance. However, Williams never seems to fully exude the sexuality of Monroe.

Carnage (7) Dir: Roman Polanski; Fra/Ger/ Pol/Spa comedy, 80 mins; Jodie Foster; Kate Winslet; Christoph Waltz, John C Reilly Carnage is surprisingly funny and entertaining for a film that basically consists of watching four people argue.

The Music Never Stopped Dir: Jim Kohlberg; US drama, 105 mins; J.K. Simmons, Lou Taylor Pucci, Julia Orman This film is like a satisfying meal; it isn’t too heavy and leaves you feeling content afterwards. ED

Dir: Clint Eastwood; US drama, 2011, 137 mins; Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Watts. Armie Hammer, Judi Dench Even 137 minutes isn’t nearly enough to encompass roughly 50 years of one of the most interesting figures of the 20th century. At the same time, 137 minutes is much too long for a film that never digs deep enough to uncover anything profound. KE

Dir: Shawn Levy; US action, 2011, 126 mins; Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly Real Steel has a fairly predictable plot and an ending so cheesy that you are liable to choke on it.

However, you find yourself caring not only about the human characters but the robots too.

All in all, Real Steel looks like the real deal. KE

The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo (15) Dir: David Fincher; US thriller, 2011, 158 mins; Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer Something about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo jars. Whether it’s the fact that all of Stockholm unaccountably speaks English, or that Fincher’s version has grown up in the shadow of its model – an excellent work – is hard to say. Although not destined to become a modern classic, this will no doubt excite many. KRG

The Inbetweeners (11) Dir: Ben Palmer; UK com, 2011, 93 mins; Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison, Joe Thomas As with many TV to film transitions the tendency can be to adopt a more benign approach to its previous incarnation – thankfully the film retains much of its signature crudity but it does lose something by attempting to give us more. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (11) Dir. Guy Ritchie. US action, 2011, 129 mins; Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, Noomi Rapace Ritchie gives you what you expect here - lots of action, fight scenes and raw adrenaline chopped up and slowed down depending upon his mood on the day he was editing. There isn’t anything to really bring it all together though, but you’ll still have fun with this one. KE

This Must Be the Place Dir: Paolo Sorrentino; Fra/ Ita/Ire dramedy, 2011, 118 mins; Sean Penn, Frances McDormand Cheyenne (Penn) is a retired rock musician. After receiving word of his father’s death he promptly returns to his birthplace of New York where he learns of his father’s life quest: to track down a Nazi officer from the concentration camp where he was imprisoned. There’s an awkward sense that the jaunty visual comedy of Penn as an ageing rocker belongs in a different genre than that of Nazi war camps. Yh entertain-

ing and superficially engaging, but the problem lies in the lack of sincerity within the subjects themselves. MW

The Artist (7) Dir: Michel Hazanavicius ; Fra/Bel drama-comedy, 2011, 100 mins; Jean Dujardin, Bernice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell It’s difficult to see why this film is being championed so highly.

Many will defend it by claiming that detractors are put off by a lack of colour, dialogue, explosions and other contemporary mainstays. But really their efforts would be better spent lauding Chaplin’s Modern Times or Murnau’s Sunrise. MW

DON’T BE put off by the IT guys talking about Game of Thrones around the water-cooler. They might have beaten you to downloading this superb adult fantasy series, which is set in a fictional world similar to medieval Europe, but it doesn’t mean they own it.

Its appeal is broad, not niche.

It’s exciting, relentless, gory, sexy and funny. If you’re not won over by the title sequence, it will take just five seconds of any scene involving dwarf actor Peter Dinklage (The Station Agent) to make you a fan.

With able support from the likes of Sean Bean, Lena Headey, Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (he’s a dandy bastard, but he grows on you), and a host of unknowns and know-him-from-somewheres, this was 2011’s best new drama.

Based on the novels of George RR Martin, it’s set to run for seven series, and while we suspect it’s going to get sillier (i.e. more magic) as it goes on, you don’t want to miss this.

Equally charismatic as Dinklage is Zooey Deschanel (500 Days of Summer), who shares a flat with three men in acclaimed new US sitcom New Girl - could this be this decade’s Friends?

Death in Paradise (TV2, Fri 20:00) also has a familiar twang.

Ben Miller is a grumpy British detective transferred from London to the Caribbean – but so far the reviews suggest it’s the breakout his career has been promising … for over 15 years.

Elsewhere, US sitcom 2 Broke Girls (TV2 Zulu, Mon 20:35, repeated Wed 22:40) has its mo-

ments; Ricky Gervais is back for a slightly less controversial hosting of the Golden Globes (TV2 Zulu, Fri 21:50); American Idol (TV3 Puls, Sun 20:00) is back for an umpteenth season with Steve Tyler and J-Lo once again onboard; Wallis Simpson (DR K, Thu 21:00) is well timed given Madonna’s biopic will be out soon; you’re probably SV1, Wed 22:00 Game of Thrones best off avoiding the premiere of Cupcake Wars (TV3 Puls, Wed 21:00), a reality show that makes even the dull Top Chef (TV3 Puls, Wed 20:00 – back for a new season) look good; and this episode of Glee (DR HD, Sat 21:00, repeated Tue 17:50) features the debut of the winner of the recently-aired The Glee Project – please don’t ask why we know that.
