DO DANES celebrate Valentine’s Day? Or at least, do the children (see G2 for the multitudes of events you can entertain them with this winter half-term) send each other secret cards? Being Denmark, you could imagine some annoying newager ensuring they all get the same number. Because love’s fair isn’t it?

On any other day, an unsigned amorous card would be handed over to the police. While I can’t remember getting any cards myself (see G9 for things to do on Valentine’s Day), it’s not like I haven’t had my fair share of pests. Many of them started with a charity dance (guilt-tripped into obliging by other women I was hoping to impress), but then again, as a young man, all I needed was a charity glance to presume somebody wanted to have my babies.

Not sure I’ve ever taken somebody out for a date on Valentine’s either (see G12 for the female take on this dilemma). But if I did, and wanted to pretend I was somebody completely different just to get her

drunk and into bed – not too drunk though (see page 4 of the newspaper) – I might consider taking her to Cirque de Soleil’s Alegria at Forum (see G3 for details).

It’s quite an impressive venue – all you have to do is keep on stoking the fire that lit up inside her the moment she walked in.

Should everything go to plan and you return together to your flat, remember to ensure you’ve got plenty of books (see G8 for our new column, Books Corner, which every month, thanks to Books & Company in Hellerup, will fill you in on the latest English-language releases), just in case they took film director John Waters’ advice to heart – I seem to remember it on Facebook.

“If you go home with somebody, and they don’t have books, don’t f**k ‘em!” Waters said to briefly lift us all out of the doldrums of the celeb-obsessed, superficial hell we frequent to imagine a world where women get turned on by Byron and Keats. Funnily enough, I’ve always applied the same rationale to women who own a copy of Pink Flamingos. (Or I would if I wasn’t a man.)

So here’s hoping Valentine’s works out for you. Just remembering it is half the battle. Do just enough to get by, but don’t overdo it if you forsee the possibility of a sulky comparison in the future.

Disney On Ice: Let’s Party

Let’s Party takes on a party celebration theme as Disney favourites old and new take the audience on a whirlwind tour of events around the world. The sequences include the Valentine’s Day Royal Ball with Princess Tiana (The Princess and the Frog), a Very Merry UnBirthday Party with Alice and the Mad Hatter, a frightfully festive Halloween party with the Disney Villains, and a Hawaiian luau with Lilo & Stitch.

Experimentarium

The Hellerup museum is one big science experiment packed with fun and educational activities for all ages. The exhibitions on dinosaurs and water are still running, but the winter half-term holiday opens the doors once again to the world-famous American soap bubble king Tom Noddy, who will be blowing bubbles like you have never seen them before in more than 40 terrific shows. As the effervescent Noddy says: “You just can’t make an ugly soap bubble.” There will be four daily shows in English from Noddy, and the museum’s own bubble experts also have their own shows. Lots of inspiration for experiments at home to have your kids forever blowing bubbles.

Georges Bizet’s classic opera is full of steamy Spanish passion, eroticism, raucous stage scenes and familiar songs that will have you swaying on your haunches. CS

Legoworld

Bella Center, Center Boulevard 5, Cph S; open 16-19 Feb, 10:00-17:00; tickets 140kr , under 3s free adm; www.legoworld.dk The miraculous revival of the Lego business in recent years is reflected in the hugely popular Lego World exhibition at the Bella Center. The amount of Lego sold in a year stretches five times around the world and the 4 billion Lego mini-figures now make up the world’s largest population group! There are plenty of activities based on the Lego characters and brands: you can sign up as a Lego fireman and heroically put out a fire, take a ride in the Legoland adventure cars, meet a real Lego designer and learn a trick or two, design your own personalised Lego brick, perfect your Lego-Jedi abilities, visit the Lego cinema or just wonder at Lego recreations in the architecture area. To make things easy, the organisers have helpfully arranged the activities into different age groups. This is sure to attract the crowds, so book early and let your kids have the chance to get their creative fingers clicking the bricks together.

How does it feel to have a real cranium in your hands and just how did they deal with a broken leg in days gone by? At the Medical Museion, you can learn about the workings of the body and it could be an interesting diversion combined with a trip to the queen’s residence and changing of the guard at Amalienborg.

Købmagergade 52A, Cph K; Open 10:0017:00; tickets: adults 25kr, under-15s: 5kr; www.rundetaarn.dk A trip to the Round Tower is always a popular and inexpensive bit of fun for a quick respite from the downtown shopping streets: from the impressive panorama over Copenhagen rooftops to the unique spiralling trip to the top. Currently this can be combined with the exhibition Forests – in your pocket, which will take you on a journey through the forests of the world, telling the stories of the their inhabitants, and exploring the challenges the forests of the world face.

Based on Aldous Huxley’s novel, Penderecki swaps communism fervour for 17th century religious fanaticism, telling the story of a priest accused of violating several nuns. Arranged by the KGL’s former artistic director Keith Warner, it is a sinister, unforgettable opera. BH

LETTING OFF STEAM: Klatreskoven

Ten metres up in the air between the trees you can climb, jump and abseil through four different courses differing degrees of difficulty. Helmets and harnesses are supplied and gloves are always a good idea during these frosty days. Book online at least a day before. Carlsberg is also well worth a visit, so the trip can be combined with a visit to the historic brewery (open from Tuesday to Sunday).

During the winter holiday, kids can bounce on the world’s biggest inflatable pillow or try out the obstacle course. In the swimming pool itself there are extra activities such as diving for treasure and walking the plank.

Circus Museum

A new attraction is the old style flea circus that will have you scratching your head each day at 10:15, 11:45, 12:45 and 13:45. From 11:00 every day during the autumn holiday, Tonny the clown’s buffoonery and juggling will warm up budding young circus artistes of the future who can get a bit of instruction in trapeze, tightrope, juggling and other traditional activities. The museum itself is also well worth a visit as a glimpse into the history of Danish circus.

So when the skiing hordes return from their holidays with embarrassing tans and snowy anecdotes, hopefully you can regale them with a few tales of your own about a wondrous winter holiday well spent in Copenhagen. Good luck!

In addition to the performances, Dansehallerne is also offering two additional events. by James Cameron, Cirque du Soleil’s collection of circus artists and theatre performers returns to Copenhagen, this time with Alegría.

A baroque-inspired celebration of youth, Alegría, meaning joyful or jubilant in Spanish, will take over Forum from February 13-24.

This will be the second time in just six months that Copenhagen has been treated to the elaborate circus’s delights – Cirque du Soleil performed Michael Jackson: The Immortal Tour to Parken’s 18,000-strong audience two nights in a row last October. Michael Jackson’s official website reported that the crowd broke a record for the highest attendance at any Cirque du Soleil show since the company began in 1984.

Copenhagen had only ever seen the company perform twice previously, in 2009 and eight years earlier in 2001. But it seems

after record-breaking crowds last year, Cirque du Soleil’s got the message, running a much longer run than usual for the Copenhagen crowds, with 17 performances scheduled over 12 days.

The realm of Alegría is one inhabited by minstrels, beggars, king’s fools and elderly aristocrats. Children and clowns, with their eternal yearning for youth, complete the set of players in this evolving fantasy universe.

Power and the handing down of power over time, the evolution from ancient monarchies to modern democracies, old age, youth − it is against this backdrop that the characters of Alegría play out their lives.

A pack of nostalgic ageing birds reflect on changing times, while ethereal baroque nymphs exuding youth create jealousy among their senior counterparts.

The narrator, the White Singer, echoes the youth around her, and her alter ego, the Black Singer, casts a shadow across it. This is a world of melancholy opposites, carrying the eternity of youth and the frustration of the elders who have fallen out of the prime of life.

If the themes of Alegría sound a little too heavy for your tastes, take comfort in the knowledge that Cirque du Soleil’s reputation is built as much on the unparalleled skill of its performers as its artistic expression.

Is this the baroque version of The Wizard of Oz?

du Soleil’s circus experience to be one of spectacular beauty, as opposed to the tacky and often disappointingly spooky memories one might have of circuses attended as a kid.

The company still delivers all the expected tricks – albeit with added class. Synchronised trapeze, fire and knife dancing, contortion routines and the Mongolian art of hand balanc-

ing are the stuff of every great circus.

James Cameron’s film Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away promises to hone in on the detail of the stunning feats achieved by the company’s profoundly skilled performers – there is no magic here, just pure skill. In Alegría this manifests in acts such as the Russian Bars, where performers are thrust into the air from

bars on their sturdy companions’ shoulders, who are then able to catch and release them into somersault combinations with incredible pace.

The performers have a number of dynamic platforms to work with, including the Cyr Wheel – a large metal hoop set in motion by the acrobat – and an overlapping trampoline known as the Power Track.

Alegría premiered in 1994, but this will be its first performance in Copenhagen. The show was originally directed by Franco Dragone, who later directed a film of the same name with a guest appearance by Whoopi Goldberg.

Alegría will also be performed in Herning from February 7-10.

ARK BOAL and Kathryn Bigelow, the writer-director pair behind the Oscar winning Iraq war drama The Hurt Locker, were all set to make their followup film about a failed attempt to capture Osama bin Laden. Of course, that was until they received word on 2 May 2011, that the American Special Forces struck lucky their second time around.

Most filmmakers would have shelved the project altogether, but this defiant duo decided to start all over again.

Zero Dark Thirty stars Hollywood’s leading lady of the moment Jessica Chastain as CIA agent Maya. A relatively new police official, in the wake of the September 11 attacks, she’s sent to the US Embassy in Pakistan and assigned the fearsome job of hunting down the world’s most wanted man, dead or alive. Chronicling her nine-year pursuit, Maya is confronted with countless false leads, dead ends, bureaucratic red tape, political espionage and the rising death toll of her embassy colleagues.

It’s enough to cause a breakdown, but it only makes Maya more dedicated and resilient on the manhunt.

No words can do justice to Chastain’s Oscar-nominated performance. Maya is a character so completely drained of emotion or sympathy that her presence is endlessly mesmerising. Similar to her underrated 1989 cop drama Blue Steel, Bigelow presents a formidable and empowering heroine who is rarely available in mainstream cinema and society altogether. Ballsy and shrewd, Chastain’s Maya is the beating heart of what is an otherwise entirely unnerving, frosty fea-

That’s not to say it’s bad, of course, just difficult. At times, it can be very difficult. Working with Killing Them Softly director of photography Greig Saucer, the handheld close-ups that dominate the film are so claustrophobic that you can almost taste the desert sand stuck on the camera lens. However, such a bare-bones aesthetic also produces some of the most white-knuckle cinematic experiences you’ll ever see; particularly in the final blackened night, captureand-kill sequence.

As with The Hurt Locker, ferocious visuals are not the only thing Zero Dark

Thirty boasts in its impressive inventory.

Primarily based on interviews with intelligence operators and undisclosed CIA officials’ reports, journalist-cumscreenplay writer Mark Boal produces a script that mercurially bulldozes any narrative clichés and formulaic character tropes and instead offers punchy political dialogue, so naturalistically delivered that it really has an uncomfortably veracious, almost documentarian zing to it.

As we all know the story’s eventual outcome, the film rightly focuses on a warts-and-all depiction of the procedural, comprehensive details of Maya’s first

experience working with trophy infidel interrogator Dan (Jason Clarke), up to when she shakes the president’s defence committee into red-alert action (expertly, if all too briefly played out by James Gandolfini and Mark Strong).

Despite the critical plaudits and award pile-ups, the film’s moment in the limelight has been stolen by a particularly shouty debate regarding its presentation of waterboarding and torture, more generally. Most shocking of all is to find that, amongst all that divisive babbling, Zero Dark Thirty is controversial in how starkly uncontroversial it all is. In what could under-

standably be considered a criticism of the film, Bigelow and Boal’s presentation of such nefarious subject matter is so pragmatic, so docile, that they have not only earned their ‘based on a true story’ stripes, but used them as a catalyst for public provocation.

If you want to watch a film littered with scorn and staunch commentary on the American War on Terror, perhaps you’d be better off with puppet-starring satire Team America. If you want the most unnerving, brilliantly acted thriller of the year, see Zero Dark Thirty.

Remorseless and torturous it may be, but you won’t be able to stop watching.

F YOU were expecting a stereotypical zombie film, you won’t find it in Warm Bodies. It is, unfortunately, a stereotypical romantic comedy. The film attempts to be a modern Romeo and Juliet, and merely substitutes a zombie for Romeo.

Warm Bodies starts off with Hoult proves that chivalry isn’t dead, even though his character may be a lengthy, slightly amusing

voiceover by R (Hoult), a zombie with a thread of humanity left in him. While attacking humans for food, he falls in love with Julie (Palmer) and decides to take her with him back to the zombie-filled airport (cue sappy love-building montages set to hip music here). Julie eventually returns to the human area of the city, which is walled off from attacks. Nevertheless, their romance has inspired something in the zombies to change and move back towards humanity.

Ironically, for a genre that is usually terrifying, the film isn’t actually that scary. Zombie films are generally frightening for two reasons: the first is that anyone can become a

zombie – anyone. A loved one could turn on you and kill you with the viciousness of a ravenous animal at any minute.

Those who were once so human are now absolutely crazy.

The other reason is that zombie-dom is apparently irreversible, and the whole world inevitably descends into madness and dystopia.

The fear is somehow erased by giving the zombies a way to become human again. And creating one-dimensional skeletal creatures to displace that fear does not work within Warm Bodies.

As far as romantic comedy, the film attempts humour, but only succeeds at monotony. The characters are rather

bland – everyone is charming, but without any real edges.

The production design is solid enough, as is expected from a Hollywood film.

Quite frankly, the premise of the film is just ridiculous.

Characters are often forced to kill their family or friends in zombie films because they’ve turned. If falling in love is necessary to inspire zombies to become human again, why is Levine’s film the first instance in which it happens?

That being said, the appeal is obvious: who wouldn’t want to inspire the one they love to become a better person?

New this Week Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (15) Dir: Tommy Wirkola; US action/adventure, 2013, 88 mins; Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Famke Janssen, Zoe Bell, Peter Stormare, Thomas Mann In this follow-up on the classic fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel have grown up to become worldfamous witch exterminators.

The tables turn, however, when the brother-sister duo discover they’re being hunted themselves.

While the film does employ some clever touches, it mostly flops – in an action first, plot second. Heavy on gore and light on substance, at the very least, this grim fairy tale will teach kids not to overdo it on the sweets. KG

Wreck-It Ralph (7) Dir: Rich Moore; US animation/adventure, 2012, 165 mins; John C Reilly, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch When video-game villain Ralph decides he wants to be a hero instead, he sets out on a quest to rebel against his role, bringing chaos to his entire arcade in the process. Managing to be simultaneously sweet, sassy and only a tiny bit tiresome, Wreck-it Ralph is nostalgia in animated form.

However, much of the film’s humour relies entirely on the nostalgia of games released in the 1980s and 90s, thereby alienating those viewers who don’t recognise the reference points. JH

Book Your Tickets The Impossible (15) The Master (11) Dir: Paul Thomas Anderson; US drama, 2012, 137 mins; Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Laura Dern The Master is one of the richest, most visually arresting and intellectually engaging films of recent times. While there are unmistakable references to scientology, the film is, at its core, universally applicable as a study in the exploitation of vulnerable peoples and the cyclical nature of subjugation. The film’s gorgeous Technicolor hues and flawlessly nuanced performances create an experience that will likely stay with you for a long time. MW

Dir: Juan Antonio Bayona; Spa drama/disaster, 2012, 114 mins; Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts, Tom Holland, Samuel Joslin The Impossible, based on the real-life experiences of a family caught in the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, rarely lets up the pace.

It is sometimes hard to watch as the characters are severely and relentlessly battered by the water and the all-encompassing hopelessness that follows after the wave hits. The work pays off tenfold, resulting in a tough realism that no doubt informs the performances and the emotional clout of the entire film. See this, and then go and hug your kids. MW

Django Unchained (15) Skyfall (11) Dir: Quentin Tarantino; US action/drama/western, 2012, 165 mins; Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, Samuel L Jackson Tarantino’s eagerly anticipated pastiche of the western epic is a bold, throbbing, exuberantly crafted piece of work – one that rattles cages with a vengeance.

The film manages to conduct a joyride through old Dixie while simultaneously building up to a passionate climax steeped in heartbreaking romance and pacifistic, moral indignation. And while the Tarantino trademarks are aplenty, the film doesn’t buckle under their weight. KG

Dir: Sam Mendes; UK/US action/thriller, 2012, 143 mins; Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw, Bérénice Marlohe Forget the latter Brosnan follies, the much maligned Quantum of Solace and even fan-favorite Casino Royale because, for the first time in nearly two decades, nobody is doing it better. Dir: Ruben Fleischer; US action/crime, 2013 113 mins; Josh Brolin, Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte This film is little more than a weak-wristed remake of Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables, offering such a mirror-image set of the characters that one feels genuinely offended by the lack of effort. Furthermore, Gangster Squad doesn’t seem to know what it wants to be when it grows up: on the one hand highly stylised and precise, it also possesses allusions to pulp and pastiche. Untouchable is certainly a fine way of regarding the film, but if you do insist, a barge pole is highly recommended. AS

Dir: Steven Spielberg; US drama, 2013, 150 mins; Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Tommy Lee Jones, James Spader Lincoln is a well-formed and morally ambiguous study of character, principle and politics.

It is often overly nostalgic about history, but confidently and even humourously refuses to shy away from the contradictions of its subject matter, and gratefully Spielberg has chosen collaborators who rise to the challenge of offering a contemporary lesson in the ways we have shaped our times, for better or worse. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (11) Dir: Bill Condon; US fantasy, 2012, 119 mins; Kristin Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Dakota Fanning, Ashley Greene, The enormously lucrative franchise that is The Twilight Saga finally comes to an end. And thank god for that. As we’ve come to expect from the last four films, Part 2’s soap-operaesque script, lacklustre direction and mind-numbing melodrama are the film’s biggest problems.

But perhaps the scariest part of all comes with the introduction of some new characters, which leaves the door open for potential spin-offs. Now there’s a scary thought. LR

Beasts of the Southern Wild (11) Dir: Benh Zeitlin; US drama/ fantasy, 2012, 94 mins; Quvenzhané Wallis, Dwight Henry, Levy Easterly, Lowell Landes Based on the play Juicy and Delicious by Lucy Alibar, this film adaptation is essentially a charming children’s coming-ofage story – a moralistic fairy tale told through magical realism.

Protagonist Hushpuppy’s dedication to her father is as heartbreakingly beautiful as young Wallis’s perfectly cast face, but the film’s occasional dabbling in sentimentality, along with an overbearing score and an overreliance on voiceovers prevents the film from achieving the transcendence it aims for. Life of Pi (11) Dir: Ang Lee; US Adventure/ drama, 2012, 130 mins; Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Gerard Depardieu, Rafe Spall, Tabu This beautiful adventure movie is an absolute must-see, even if the plot stinks. It’s a bottomless box of visual delights: colours have never been so vivid. But although writer David Magee does his best to cloak a very corny plot, elements of the baggy original novel still creep in.

Despite the narrative compromise, the film is a much-needed bit of heart-warming magic during the frosty season. LR

The Hobbit (11) Dir: Peter Jackson; US/New Zealand Adventure/Fantasy, 2012, 169 mins; Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Hugo Weaving The grandiloquence of the film will please the fanatics, but leave those on the fence potentially nauseous. Although some of the performances impress, the storyline is flabby, and the writers struggle to hatch a consistently entertaining story to meet the film’s excessive length. LR

break only ended up lasting two years, Key pointed out that the time off was crucial for allowing the band to regain their original fervour. Without the hiatus, he suggested, Yellowcard might never have come close to replicating their ‘Ocean Avenue’ glory again.

“I know there’s no way we would have written When You’re Through Thinking, Say Yes if we had gone directly into the studio when we realised Paper Walls wasn’t happening,” he said. “We wouldn’t have come out with the same energy, the same feeling that you get when you hear this album.”

While When You’re Through Thinking, Say Yes was the band’s first official release since their return from a hiatus, violinist Sean

Mackin says it wasn’t until their most recent record, Southern Air, came out during the summer of 2012 that the group felt completely up to speed again.

“Right now is a perfect form of awesomeness in the band,” he told Music Feeds. “The excitement from our fans, and other bands we tour with ... it’s so unbelievable. We honestly couldn’t be happier.”

Mackin said that even after over ten years of experience touring and performing, Yellowcard haven’t lost their initial enthusiasm, which is echoed in the band’s signature sound.

“We all have so many influences whenever you get us together, we’re absolutely going to come up with that Yellowcard sound,” he said. “That’s just what

we do. With this one, Southern Air, we were all focused in the same direction. And that doesn’t always happen, though you have four very different people. But when Yellowcard are firing up, it’s always exciting, and that’s where we are at now.”

Southern Air encompasses all of the catchy, violin-laced pop punk that fans have come to love about Yellowcard, with a hint of the energy and vigour that made ‘Ocean Avenue’ such a hit. In order to make their newest effort the best it could be, Mackin said, the band looked to their previous successes for inspiration.

“When we wrote Southern Air earlier this year, we really wanted to focus on the best of Yellowcard – everything we loved about it,” he said. “We

tried to find all of the elements from our previous records, so we went back with [producer] Niel Avron, who’s our long-time friend.”

“He’s at the top of his game, without question one of the world’s best producers, and he confessed that this is our best record,” Mackin went on. “So Niel Avron doesn’t say things that aren’t true; it was a great honour to hear that, and that’s how we feel.”

It’s no doubt Yellowcard will bring their newly refound energy to Lille Vega when they take the stage on Monday night, and prove that these pop-punk veterans are stronger than ever.

And don’t worry – their dreamy, palpable and wavy concoction of electropop and indie-rock elements are still as alluring as ever. Although their more recent releases delve into electronica slightly more than traditionalist fans might prefer, you can still expect hordes of them to be at Amager Bio on Sunday.

pparently the Hives never went away. When the Swedish five-piece first broke onto the scene as part of the so-called ‘garage rock revival’, it would have been easy to dismiss them as ephemeral scenesters; though sonically and sartorially sharp, they seemed nothing more than sharp-shooting proponents of both the moment and indie club dancefloors around the globe.

How wrong that turned out to be. The Hives, without any sign of wear or tear, have not outgrown their scene, they’ve outlasted it. And over a decade later, their obvious zeal for playing live still prevails.

Thursday night at Vega, aside from the shade of guitarist Vigilante Carlstroem’s hair, the erosion of bassist Dr Matt

Destruction’s fringe and, at last, some new material (indeed their latest album, June 2012’s Lex Hives, was their first in five years), this was very much the same fresh-faced band that barnstormed radio airwaves in 2000 with ‘Hate to Say I Told You So’.

Front man Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist, named like a bluesy gunslinger and dressed, like his band mates, in a black and white tuxedo with top hat, leapt elastically onto the stage, the whites of his eyes big enough to be a sixth Hive.

Immediately they burst into several songs off Lex Hives.

‘Come On’ and ‘Take Back the Toys’ have the ratcheted rhythm and catchy pop hooks associated with the band.

“We have all of the answers, we do not question!” Blomqvist shrieked before ripping into ‘1,000 Answers’.

Half of the eight bands performing in the preliminaries at Rust tonight – Blessing the Unknown, Sons of Smiths, MermaidsPurse, Blaze of Barbaroid, Qualia, Lukra Biz, Nelson and Complexity – will move on to the semi-finals at Lille Vega, with their eyes on the Nordic final in Stockholm and perhaps even the international finals in Germany later this year. If you’re interested in the up-and-comers of Danish music, don’t miss it.

NOT A WORD about the demise of the book/publishing/bookshop world − I promise.

This column is meant to be a (very) rough guide to a few of the myriad of newly arrived or arriving titles. It will hopefully ignite or perhaps reignite a desire to find just the right book to entertain, educate, excite and enjoy!

We begin with our very own (i.e Danish) author Peter Høeg and his novel The Elephant Keeper’s Children, recently translated into English. It is the story of teenagers Peter and Tilde, in search of parents who seem to have disappeared into thin air. With the police hot on their heels, they make their way through a web of religious groups, criminals and aristocrats on a journey that increasingly points to an extraordinary crime. The novel is humorous with many interesting − at times over the top − twists and characters. Inquiring minds will be pleased to know that Martin Aitken’s translation of the novel with its humour and jokes has won him much praise.

In a major leap, I cannot help but recommend Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers. A debut novel by the author and twice deployed soldier in Iraq, it is a moving, harrowing and incredibly beautiful account of what engaging in war can do to a human being.

Moving back and forth between Iraq and his protagonist’s hometown back in Virginia, Kevin Powers interweaves dashed expectations, hopelessness and survival instinct and you find yourself

In The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka (new in paperback) we are invited into the lives of a group of Japanese mail order brides travelling to the United States between the First and Second World Wars. Lured by promises their future husbands cannot keep of lives they will not live, this is a beautiful and lyrical story told in something as rare as a collective voice describing the women’s loneliness, confusion, strength − and the meaning of identity.

Food blogs are all the rage. Whether you are a professional cook or just love to cook at home, blogging about it has become the norm. One thing most food lovers seem to agree on these days is that Katie Quinn Davies’s WhatKatieAte is one of the best blogs around, and this month the recipes and gorgeous photographs will also be available in book form in What Katie Ate: Recipes and Other Bits and Bobs.

And finally, we can look forward to a new non-fiction title by Daniel Pink, author of A Whole New Mind and Drive. To Sell is Human: The Surprising Truth about Moving Others is an interesting look at yet another area where psychology and sociology interact − which, by the way, has become an extremely popular genre in recent years.

Pink’s new book is a fascinating account of what it takes to sell − and how salespeople are not the only ones who spend their lives selling and moving others.

HERE’S SOMETHING about clichés that make them slightly ... annoying. You’ve heard them over and over again, so they’re on the tip of your tongue. It’s easier to draw these quips from your toolbox than it is to stretch the English language, isn’t it? But c’mon: “That was a knife to the heart” − you drama queen; “I passed with flying colours” − you braggart; “It’s nothing personal” − as if.

And the pièce de résistance: “I’m single and loving it!” I bet you rolled your eyes just reading that.

This Thursday is Valentine’s Day, and if there were a way to record how many people use that cliché in the days leading up to the most arbitrarily ro-

mantic day of the year, it would break the meter.

Don’t misunderstand, though. I’m single and − you guessed it − I love it.

I read somewhere that people are so concerned about being with and dating other people to wait for ‘the one’, that they forget something so obvious that it goes over their heads: to date themselves first.

It might seem odd, but it’s one of the best feelings when you’re comfortable − and excited − going to a theatre, a café or a museum just by yourself and enjoying it. After all, lovers may come and go, but we’re stuck with ourselves forever.

So you know what? Go ahead and

indulge in clichés this Valentine’s Day at the Wondercool festival. If you’ve got someone you like, go ahead and enjoy each other’s company. Maybe eat chocolate for dinner at A XOXO or see ‘Beautiful Creatures’ at CinemaxX. But if you’re not involved, don’t sit home and pout − enjoy your own company. Go and see one of the great exhibitions running in February. Check out the transformation of the Carlsberg Brewery. Listen to one of the fantastic jazz musicians playing on Thursday. Most importantly, look yourself in the mirror and tell yourself: “I’m single and loving it.”

IQUORICE is one of those sticky subjects that can quickly divide a dinner table into two passionate camps: those that wax lyrical and drool at the very mention of the black gold, and those who simply detest the tongue-numbing stuff. Researcher Marcia Pelchat of the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia believes that it is not an acquired like or dislike that causes some to wrinkle their noses in displeasure and others to raise their eyebrows towards heaven, but rather something you are born with.

Just in case you didn’t already know, liquorice is extracted from the root of glycyrrhiza, a legume native to southern Europe and parts of Asia. Its active ingredient is glycyrrhizin, a sweetener around 30 to 50 times sweeter than sucrose. This compound is routinely used in Japan to treat hepatitis and in China, tuberculosis. However, all good things in moderation seems to be the order of the day – a European Commission report from 2008 suggested a maximum intake of 100mg of glycyrrhizic acid to avoid health problems.

But liquorice is a spice to be celebrated.

Denmark’s Johan Bulöw is a liquorice Willy Wonka, whose belief in the mystical qualities of the mighty root led him to follow a dream, transporting him from Bornholm to Sydney in search of the perfect liquorice recipe. A massive cooking pot from Chicago evolved into a liquorice manufacturing plant specially imported from Manchester. Today a factory in Taastrup ships out exclusive confectionery creations to select locations such as Magasin, Tivoli, Harvey Nichols in London and Chelsea Market Basket, New York.

This Saturday and Sunday, the Bulöworganised Liquorice Festival promises to take us on a “sensory journey from liquorice root to gourmet liquorice”. A series of eight two-hour long sessions over both days include an open kitchen and mini-workshop, liquorice anecdotes and tales (in Danish),

Lakrids by Bülow is the undisputed star of the show. With Valentine’s Day on the way, Johan Bülow expresses his long-standing passionate love affair through the promise of sweet liquorice balls coated in white chocolate and tossed in “cascades of strawberry kisses”. Breaking Bad TV2 Zulu, Sun 15:00

WE DESERVE good TV in February and for once the schedulers have responded. First off is the series that gets more office airwave play thanany other. Going strong in its fifth season in the US, Breaking Bad is now an established Emmy contender and critics’ favourite (its Metacritic scores have increased every season – the fifth got 99!). It took a couple of years, but this badass drama about a chemistry teacher who decides to start producing crystal meth has broken into the big time. And it’s fitting that Zulu, the channel that really gets the download generation, has stumped up the cash to show season one (just seven episodes long). While it starts off rusty – it initially had a small budget – stay with it, as it will reward you in a way that few shows ever have.

On the other hand, Revenge, a small town series about a new arrival who has come to destroy the community that ruined her life, will reward a certain type. According to the Wall Street Journal, it’s a “beguiling and entirely chilling study in revenge lust”. Sound like you?

Some viewers have learnt to love the central character ‘path (think Dexter), which might explain the high 8.3 rating on IMDB, but some critics are evidently getting weary (66 on Metacritic), although Madeleine Stowe, as the arch nemesis, has garnered lavish praise for a role that saw her land a Golden Globe.

Also worth catching this week is the long overdue return of The Walking Dead (DR3, Tue 21:20), back for a second season, and Oc-

cupation (BBC Ent, Sat 22:00), a modern day miniseries about a trio of British soldiers. James Nesbit and the always excellent Stephen Graham shine in a series universally praised by the British media.

Elsewhere, if the weather’s bad this Saturday, why not stay in and watch feature length drama Mrs TV2 Zulu, Sun 15:00 Breaking Bad Mandela (DRK, Sat 13:50), which stars Sophie Okonedo (the black Nancy in Oliver Twist) and David Harewood (the CIA honcho in Homeland); there’s another chance to see the very first episode of Hung (SV2, Tue 23:15); and given how much we’ve been seeing his work of late, isn’t it time you caught up on Andy Warhol (DRK, Wed 21:45), even if it is just to have a valid reason to hate his work.
