I’M 40 – there, I’ve said it. Today in fact, if you’re reading this online on Saturday. No doubt I’ll read this one day myself, 20 or 30 years from now, to try and remember what it was like before it all went so horribly wrong. So, what’s it all about, Benjy! Is this, as they like to say, just the beginning? The truth is: I don’t know. I feel happy enough, I’m having a party and I’m going to get drunk … really drunk. And then, when I wake up the next day, maybe then I’ll have some answers. But I suspect they won’t be worth printing. As that great Irish philosopher Johnny Logan said: “What’s another year?” The three-time Eurovision winner is a fairly regular visitor to Copenhagen, and when he’s here, he likes to drop off for a drink and maybe a performance at the Irish Rover on Strøget. And to mark the first week of my 41st year, I’m going to do the same, only I’m tone deaf. So what’s the next best thing when you’re in

a pub (that’s question number one of 50 by the way): a quiz! Next Thursday (see G8 for details), I’m making my debut as the pub’s new quizmaster and am humbly hoping that many of you might join me for what should be a good evening. Part quiz, part live performance, it will feature a drama extracts round presented by actor Ian Burns, with more of the same planned for the St Patrick’s Day special on March 7. I’ve been obsessed with quizzes since I was eleven. It was a combination of that scene in The Omen II when Damien recites all the dates and finally finding something I could outshine the eggheads in. I love ‘what do they have in common’ questions, so expect some of them, especially as they’re hard to look up on an iPhone. Other special features include a written round that you’ll have an hour to complete, a final round full of multiple points questions, and a snowball question that includes a prize for the nearest answer. Elsewhere this week, we’ve got the first of four special sections on Wondercool (G12-15), a preview of the best venues in town to watch the Super Bowl (G2) and reviews of two of the biggest films of the year (G4). Something tells me 40 might be the perfect age to become a quizmaster. After all, who needs answers when you set all the questions?

THERE’S something oddly appealing about watching sport played in glorious sunshine while it’s pitch black outside – like you’re privy to something in another reality, not just a different timezone. The US Masters is a great example, but I’m most particularly thinking about the 1986 and 1994 World Cups – great memories, and so much more preferable to the 2002 version when I had to watch England lose at 9am and then go to an office I shared with a Scot. So pity the poor North Americans who rarely enjoy this privilege. The closest they get is watching a late finish in the Australian Open tennis, so it’s no wonder so few of them like non-American sports – following them is a life sentence of early starts. You might as well become a postman. What it means, however, is that watching the Super Bowl over here, in starry, not so stripey Copenhagen, becomes a novelty. The game pretty much kicks off at midnight and, like a bad night at the Oscars, takes you to the crack of dawn. So what better way to enjoy it than making it an all-night bender? Particularly as Super Bowl XLVII marks the first time in the competition’s history that the rival coaches are brothers! So enlist some buddies, sink some Buds and devour some ribs at one of the venues showing John Harbaugh’s Baltimore Ravens take on Jim Harbaugh’s San Francisco 49ers. Make it a night to remember!

Georges Bizet’s classic opera is full of steamy Spanish passion, eroticism, raucous stage scenes and familiar songs that will have you swaying on your haunches. CS

From 21:00, the cinema will be showing the latest Arnold Schwarzeggner action movie, The Last Stand, on its big screen before the big match. The movie isn’t out nationwide until March 7 so don’t miss this chance if you want a sneak preview of Big Arnie’s first film in over a decade. The ticket price also includes a Budweiser – not bad for a night promising cool one-liners, although they didn’t specify by whom. Built in the 17th century, the Round Tower is now one of Copenhagen’s most popular tourist attractions. Centrally located just off Strøget (the walking street), it boasts an incredible view of the city from its top. It also has a stunning exhibition hall where you can currently see the exhibition Forests − in your pocket (Skoven − in din lomme). This interactive and immersive exhibition, organised by Inger Kærgaard and Marie Sigvardt, is all about the world’s forests. Walking into the exhibition hall, visitors are greeted with a miniature forest complete with a ‘forest cave’ made from tree branches. You can play in the ‘forest cave’, which is fast becoming a popular photo backdrop for exhibition-goers, or you can sit at a long table and draw a picture of your favourite forest memory with provided coloured pencils and pens. Spot On, Nailed, Staged & Standing

forests from Denmark to Indonesia to Poland to Finland and other locations. From close-ups of forest mushrooms and flowers to sweeping landscapes, the images immerse visitors in a virtual forest. Exhibition organiser Inger Kærgaard, who is a biologist, took the majority of the photographs on display. Her passion for the environment comes through her nature photography. Kærgaard has been traveling to visit the world’s forests since 2009, taking hundreds of photographs along the way. When travelling, Kærgaard meets with NGOs, like Mangroves for the Future in Thailand, or the World Wildlife Fund in Cambodia, as well as other biologists and local people. She is not only taking beautiful photographs, but also increasing her knowledge about what forests mean to the world’s economy, leisure time, and environment. This research has been translated into an informative question and answer element for Forests − in your pocket. The exhibition is organised into four parts: What is a forest?, Why is the forest important?, Why are forests disappearing? and How can the forests be protected? You might be a regular forager in the forest for fauna and fungi, but would you like to know more about the integral consitutent: wood

growth forests, and from rainforests to the clear cut fields of tree farms. Going through the exhibition one can learn fun facts, such as 90 percent of all terrestrial organisms live in the world’s forests, or that the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation defines the international standard for a forest as an area of at least ‘0.5 hectares with at least 20 metres width.’ Kærgaard and Sigvardt have also worked to program seven

weeks of lectures and events taking place over the course of the exhibition. There are talks about forest imagery in art history, orangutans in the forest, how chocolate beans are grown and harvested in the world’s forests, and much more. There are a number of events taking place in connection with the exhibition, of which some are in Danish and some are in English. A notable English language

event is taking place on Wednesday March 6. Rohit Singh, a wildlife scientist from WWF Malaysia, will discuss tigers and forest ecology in English. Forests − in your pocket is partly a celebration of the beauty of the world’s forests and partly

environmental activism, designed to raise awareness about how this important natural resource is being used around the world. Abe’s alright, but could use a few amendments ARUN SHARMA

PPEARING OUT of the settling dust of Barack Obama’s recent re-election victory, Spielberg’s Lincoln offers up a well-timed dose of political parallelism so laced with a host of present-day relevancies – from partisan stalemates, institutionalised corruption and arm-twisting spin to the unimaginable prospect of a black man occupying the White House – that even viewers who don’t consider themselves historically savvy will find it eye-opening, provocative and not least worryingly familiar that, despite having imagined the unimaginable, little has changed in the political system almost 30 presidents later, regardless of colour. The story of the 16th president’s struggle to pass the 13th Amendment in order to abolish slavery before the end of the Civil War has garnered praise for its acumen and depth while being criticised for its biased white-leaning orientation. Based on the book ‘Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln’, Lincoln boasts an often overly dense yet ponderous script by playwright Tony Kushner (who previously collaborated with Spielberg on Munich), which gratifyingly dodges much of the saccharin-infused, sentimental blackmail that Spielberg sceptics justifiably fear. This fear was certainly not alleviated from the outset. The opening scene sees the president informally addressing a small gathering of Union soldiers in a smoke-blown battlefield encampment. Full of fake pathos and an underlying feeling that 21st century political correctness dictated the scene’s inclusion, a black soldier complains of the lack of equality

within the ranks of the army. Lincoln remains silent, only to be miraculously rescued from this awkward moment by a sudden outburst of patriotism from a pair of white soldiers who quite inextricably begin quoting the Declaration of Independence, with the ubiquitous Stars and Stripes flapping assuredly in the background. This does not bode well for what is a rather lengthy film, but thankfully this kind of Spielbergism is shortlived, and the film’s subsequent emphasis on characterisation and political wrangling keep it focused elsewhere for much of the duration. bloodiness of the war, the film shrewdly stays off the battlefield and instead revels in the shady dealing, truth tuning and backroom brawling on Capitol Hill. Intellectual ideology is set forth while traversing the corridors of power, and unlike, say, the overpraised, bombastic political scribblings of Aaron Sorkin (who scripted The West Wing and The Social Network), whose protagonists tend to bleat in a unified, high-speed grating chorus, Kushner has created distinct personalities for each of his true-life characters, and it is here that the film flourishes. That Lincoln emerges with a unilateral perspective certainly has much to

do with Day-Lewis’s unassuming magnetism. He cuts a solitary, often retiring figure, as though hiding out to escape being fitted with a halo; as the film peaks, the votes are tallied for the Amendment’s passage and John Williams’s orchestral treacle overflows, Lincoln is seen quietly playing with his youngest son, obscured in the gloom of his White House sanctuary. Upstaging them all, however, is Tommy Lee Jones as stone-faced, zealous abolitionist Thaddeus Stevens. He is belligerent, tortured and stubbornly committed to the cause, and his cantankerous, saliva-spitting outbursts give the film desperately-needed injections of vig-

our and verve in those moments when its script flounders under the weight of its content and begins to wither and dry. Lincoln is a well-formed and morally ambiguous study of character, principle and politics. It is often overly nostalgic about both the cinematic process and history, but it confidently and even humorously refuses to shy away from the contradictions of its subject matter, and gratefully Spielberg has chosen collaborators who rise to the challenge of offering a contemporary lesson in the ways we have shaped our times, for better or worse.

HE MASTER is the longawaited work from Paul Thomas Anderson, the writer/director of Boogie Nights (1997), Magnolia (1999), Punch Drunk Love (2002) and There Will Be Blood (2007). While the film has been referred to endlessly as ‘a scientology film’, such expectations will not serve you well. The film is best experi-

enced on its own terms. It’s not an easy film to categorise and that’s no bad thing, since it’s easily one of the richest, most visually arresting, emotionally layered and intellectually engaging films of recent times. Joaquin Phoenix plays Freddie Quell, a traumatised Second World War navy veteran who finds his reintegration into civilised society a great challenge. To simply exist is not enough; he craves intensity and his means of acquiring it are all self-destructive, bringing violence upon himself and others, whether it’s brawling with clients or poisoning his liquor with turpentine. One day he happens upon a party of revellers aboard a canal boat

and finds one man seemingly capable of ordering his chaotic energies and giving some form of purpose to his life. That man is Lancaster Dodd (SeymourHoffman), a writer, a nuclear physicist and philosopher, but primarily, in his own words, a man. Perhaps Dodd fills the dominating, all-encompassing structure that life aboard a navy vessel once provided him. Dodd also commands an unquestioning loyalty, in much the same way military service might. Phoenix and Hoffman provide powerhouse performances, Phoenix in particular recalls the abundant untamed energies of a young Jack Nicholson . Dodd’s character is unmistakably modelled on scientology founder L

Ron Hubbard, but the film is, at its core, universally applicable as a study in the exploitation of vulnerable peoples, power play and the cyclical nature of subjugation. The parting effect is one of intoxication. I immediately wanted more – and initially became frustrated that there was no more. Yet the luxuriant quality of the film’s every aspect, from the gorgeous technicolor hues of Anderson’s dreamy floating camera to the flawlessly nuanced performances, will encourage you to reassess what you have seen and perhaps rewatch the film. The experience will likely stay with you for a long time. MARK WALKER

Book Your Tickets Django Unchained (15) Dir: Quentin Tarantino; US action/drama/western, 2012, 165 mins; Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, Samuel L Jackson Tarantino’s eagerly anticipated pastiche of the western epic is a bold, throbbing, exuberantly crafted piece of work – one that rattles cages with a vengeance. The film manages to conduct a joyride through old Dixie while simultaneously building up to a passionate climax steeped in heartbreaking romance and pacifistic, moral indignation. And while the Tarantino trademarks are aplenty, the film doesn’t buckle under their weight. KG

The Impossible (15) Dir: Juan Antonio Bayona; Spa drama/disaster, 2012, 114 mins; Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts, Tom Holland, Samuel Joslin The Impossible, based on the real-life experiences of a family caught in the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, rarely lets up the pace. It is sometimes hard to watch as the characters are severely and relentlessly battered by the water and the all-encompassing hopelessness that follows after the wave hits. The work pays off tenfold, resulting in a tough realism that no doubt informs the performances and the emotional clout of the entire film. See this, and then go and hug your kids. MW

Skyfall (11) Dir: Sam Mendes; UK/US action/thriller, 2012, 143 mins; Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw, Bérénice Marlohe Forget the latter Brosnan follies, the much maligned Quantum of Solace and even fan-favorite Casino Royale because, for the first time in nearly two decades, nobody is doing it better. Searching for Sugar Man (15) Dir: Malik Bendjelloul; Swe/ US/SA doc, 2012, 86 mins If you disappear into obscurity after an undistinguished music career, you can always take pride in the fact that halfway across the world a nation is being inspired by your music to start a revolution against a racist oppressive regime. That’s at least what happened in the case of US ‘70s rocker Rodriguez, who was a hero to many during the South African struggle against apartheid. Swedish filmmaker Bendjelloul follows two South African fans as they try to find out what happened to their hero, and the result is as compelling as a real-life detective story. LL

Avoid like the Plague Gangster Squad (15) Dir: Ruben Fleischer; US action/crime, 2013 113 mins; Josh Brolin, Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte This film is little more than a weak-wristed remake of Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables, offering such a mirror-image set of the characters that one feels genuinely offended by the lack of effort. Furthermore, Gangster Squad doesn’t seem to know what it wants to be when it grows up: on the one hand highly stylised and precise, it also possesses allusions to pulp and pastiche. Untouchable is certainly a fine way of regarding the film, but if you do insist, a barge pole is highly recommended. AS

Texas Chainsaw 3D (15) Dir: John Luessenhop; US horror, 2013, 101 mins; Bill Moseley, Alexandra Daddario, Tania Raymonde Just when horror fans thought they were safe, Tobe Hooper’s 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre storyline has been unleashed onto the big screen yet again, now in horrendous 3D. This time we’re transported 29 years into the future, where young Heather (Daddario) inherits her late grandmother’s estate and, upon arrival, discovers a six-foot-five terror lurking in the basement. Do yourself a favour and do anything other than pay to see this film. LR

Hope Springs (11) Dir: David Frankel; US romcom, 2012, 100 mins; Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones, Steve Carell, Mimi Rogers While the trailer makes this film look like a syrupy sex romp, only a mournful tale of relationship turmoil lurks beneath the slapstick jokes and sarcastic jibes of Hope Springs. Short on laughs and drama alike, the film reduces a couple’s reconciliation efforts to 100 minutes of bickering, crying, and attempts at intimacy. LR

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (11) Dir: Bill Condon; US fantasy, 2012, 119 mins; Kristin Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Dakota Fanning, Ashley Greene, Nikki Reed, Michael Sheen The enormously lucrative franchise that is The Twilight Saga finally comes to an end. And thank god for that. As we’ve come to expect from the last four films, Part 2’s soap-operaesque script, lacklustre direction and mind-numbing melodrama are the film’s biggest problems. But perhaps the scariest part of all comes with the introduction of some new characters, which leaves the door open for potential spin-offs. Now there’s a scary thought. LR

Also Playing Frankenweenie (11) Dir: Tim Burton; US anim at i o n / c o m e d y / h o r r o r, 2012, 87 mins; Charlie Tahan, Winona Ryder, Martin Short, Martin Landau Frankenweenie harkens back to a time when Burton wasn’t boring us with films made by his left hand, when his filmmaking crackled with innovation and originality. This is far from a perfect film, however. The narrative engine occasionally peters out, and the audience is left waiting for the narrative slack to pick up. Frankenweenie may not be as effective as his other films, but Burton the filmmaker is no longer on autopilot – he has been reanimated, he’s alive! MW

Beasts of the Southern Wild (11) Dir: Benh Zeitlin; US drama/ fantasy, 2012, 94 mins; Quvenzhané Wallis, Dwight Henry, Levy Easterly, Lowell Landes Based on the play Juicy and Delicious by Lucy Alibar, this film adaptation is essentially a charming children’s coming-ofage story – a moralistic fairy tale told through magical realism. Protagonist Hushpuppy’s dedication to her father is as heartbreakingly beautiful as young Wallis’s perfectly cast face, but the film’s occasional dabbling in sentimentality, along with an overbearing score and an overreliance on voiceovers prevents the film from achieving the transcendence it aims for. Jack Reacher (15) Dir: Christopher McQuarrie; US action/horror, 2012, 130 mins; Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Robert Duvall, Richard Jenkins Cruise is the eponymous antihero here: an enigmatic exmilitary cop bringing criminals to justice. While he may not have the blonde locks or towering height, the pint-size patron saint of Scientology is strong here, and the embellished script allows space for the supporting cast to shine. A scattering of good moments, however, can’t stop Jack Reacher from overstaying its running time – the film takes itself far too seriously to be mindless entertainment. LR

Life of Pi (11) Dir: Ang Lee; US Adventure/ drama, 2012, 130 mins; Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Gerard Depardieu, Rafe Spall, Tabu This beautiful adventure movie is an absolute must-see, even if the plot stinks. It’s a bottomless box of visual delights: colours have never been so vivid. But although writer David Magee does his best to cloak a very corny plot, elements of the baggy original novel still creep in. Despite the narrative compromise, the film is a much-needed bit of heart-warming magic during the frosty season. LR

A dialogue that knows no boundaries

LICKING through a beefy festival programme, the question tends to be not what would you like to see, but rather how do you figure out a reading system to even find something you would like to see? During Copenhagen’s Winter Jazz Festival (February 1-17), a plethora of Danish and international jazz acts will descend upon the bitterness of the city to rouse us out of our hibernation. If you run with the many Copenhageners who turn up every year to the city’s main two

jazz festivals, it might be hard to imagine how an over-abundance of jazz could be a problem. But if your head’s woolly with cold and you’re having trouble deciding which act will be worth your while, allow us to introduce you to Afro-Cuban jazz maestro Kevin Harris. Hailing from Boston, for just one (late) night only, Harris will be playing a jam session at Jazzhus Montmartre, supported by locals Richard Andersson and Niclas Campagnol on bass and drums respectively. Harris has played venues such as the Blue Note (both in New York and Milan), Boston’s Scullers Jazz Club and the Berklee Performance Center, as well as a range of renowned festivals including Panama and Havana. Teaching is a key aspect of his musical life: Harris regularly gives

piano lessons and trains jazz ensembles at the Berklee College of Music and has previously taught classes at the Boston Arts Academy. Despite never having played to a Danish audience before, Harris says it’s no secret that the Danish jazz scene is alive and active. “It is my understanding that Danish audiences have always enjoyed and appreciated jazz, and I look forward to ‘conversing’ with them through my music,” he told InOut. Harris will also be interacting with his two Danish counterparts and, although he will not have played with them before taking to the stage for their live jam session, Harris seems to take this in his stride. “For me, playing with experienced musicians for the first time

is similar to having a conversation with someone for the first time,” he says. “I don’t feel there is anything to be nervous about as the three of us are in the habit of communicating at a high level with our instruments. Improvisation is a powerful language and it allows us to make conversations happen: telling jokes, laughing, crying, asking questions. “Interestingly, last week I played the Panama Jazz Festival with a bassist and drummer who I’ve known for more than six years and we had a blast. But regardless of the length of the relationship, good musicians bring about good dialogue.” And it’s precisely the ‘call and response’ interaction between musicians that has endeared Harris to his chosen genre. rhythms from the Afro-Cuban genre − like rumba and salsa − with the improvisation and harmonies of traditional jazz music. The style was popularised in the late 1940s when American jazz musician Dizzy Gillespie collaborated with Cuban percussionist Chano Pozo. When Harris takes the stage at Copenhagen’s prime jazz venue on February 2, he will be playing a variety of compositions from his latest album, Museum Vol. 1, which is set for release two weeks later. Harris’s fourth album stretches the idea of collaboration by considering each song as an exhibit in a museum, with influences ranging from Salvador Dali’s paintings to Nina Simone’s lyrics. While the Copenhagen performance will be based on Har-

ris’s compositions, there will still be plenty of opportunity for the other members of the trio to shine. Andersson, a blind Danish bass player, studied at the Manhattan School of Music and was named Fyn’s jazz musician of the year in 2010. While Campagnol, a regular drummer on the Copenhagen Jazz Festival circuit, has accompanied renowned Danish jazz and rock singer Cæcilie Norby. While visiting Denmark, Harris will also take part in a jam session with students at the Carl Nielsen Academy of Music in Odense. Later in the year he is scheduled to perform at the Washington DC Festival, and also the Cambridge River Festival where he is looking forward to joining Grammy Award winner Terri Lyne Carrington. One of the biggest yet truest musical acts hailing from West Africa in recent years, their down-to-earth beats will add a lively edge to the Winter Jazz Festival line-up.

Think of the core members, Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson, as the Damon Albarn of the alternative metal underground. Forging experiments out of droning drum rolls, mixed delays and untethered distortion pedals, Sunn O))) are of the most under-appreciated acts of the 21st century – seeing them play live is strongly advised.

CPH Jazzhouse: 23:00; 130kr The Danish trio remain one of Europe’s most distinguished alternative jazz bands. As musical troubadours, they pride themselves on a delicate balance of influences, both eastern and western, and their heavy usage of the electric organ. Bouncing from afro-beat, blues and funk to surf, jazz and rock, their latest record, Isle of Men (2012), is multifaceted and broad in its appeal. Known for their provocative live performances – last year the group played concerts on four continents from Shanghai to Vancouver – this is another one of the highlights at this year’s Winter Jazz Festival.

ispatch’s first performance in Denmark is hopefully one of many to come. Their endless energy, charisma and love for playing with each other resulted in a two-hour humorous rock/reggae extravaganza showcasing some of the best Dispatch music of their past 18-year career. Hailed as “the largest band that nobody knows”, Dispatch are an independent rock/reggae trio who are well-known in their home country of the US. But in Denmark they maintain a refreshing sense of anonymity that they used to their advantage during their marvellous performance at Lille Vega. Dispatch have played to audiences of over 100,000 in their home-base of Boston and performed three consecu-

tive sold out nights in arguably the most famous venue in the world: Madison Square Garden. Yet in Denmark, they played for less than 500 people, and this intimacy was reflected in their humble disposition and relaxed attitude on stage. South African quartet Kongos were invited along as support. After Kongos delivered a commendable set of a very original blend of psychedelic rock reminiscent of The Doors infused with sun-drenched reggae, Lille Vega was set to receive the night’s main guests. As the curtains revealed the stage, the relatively small crowd cheered their hearts out for the trio. Opening with the folksy ‘Bats in the Belfry’, Dispatch were warmly received. Following the opener, ‘Here We Go’ brought Dispatch’s take on rap music, combined with a bluesy rock guitar delivered seamlessly by Chad Urmston. With no true lead vocalist, all three members of Dispatch

contribute equally to songwriting, singing and instrumentation. This regulation of focus produces some gorgeous symphonic singing, which was proven on the groovy reggae tune ‘Passerby’. One of the early highlights was ‘Time Served’, an invigorating rock/reggae concoction that got the audience properly involved. As a treat for the veteran fans, a selection of some of the band’s earlier unrefined numbers were performed. The most well-received was ‘Out Loud’, in which the audience became involved in one of

the many call and response sessions of the night. The main set was concluded by ‘The General’, a thematic song that implicitly deals with the horrors of war, and culminated with a lengthy jam and a final chorus that the crowd sang with happiness. The encore brought the three members together for an acoustic session showcasing some of Brad Corrigan’s virtuoso djembe skills, and a very well received finalé in the form of ‘Elias’, a song written in dedication to the people of Zimbabwe. Dispatch were on fire; the endless jam fusions were never tedious and their choice of songs suited both newer and older fans. All in all, Dispatch’s performance was a nearly perfect introduction to Danish soil. Michalis Nielsen

His musical success is but one of his many distinguishing traits, and his story makes his path to fame even more remarkable. Born with albinism, which is considered a terrible omen in the Mandinka culture, Keita was ostracised by his family and community. However, his bloodline is directly descended from the founder of the Mali Empire. Not gritty enough for you? Saint Vitus have been deemed the “godfathers of American doom metal”. That’s a big claim, but these guys can handle it. The quartet of badasses are coming out of the dark, 17 years after their last album, since Die Healing, to present their new work, Lillie: F-65. The album marks a return to the trademark heavy doomsday guitar distortions the band is known for, but they’ve also added more resonant vocals to give the group a classic sound. If you’re a metal fan, you know you cannot miss this show at Loppen in Christiania. Even though the show is on March 28, get your tickets early; Danes love their metal. They’re going for 140kr on billetlugen.dk. You might be looking for something a bit more wistful after some of these wild shows. Coming all the way from Canada, Crystal Castles are known for nu-wave trance-y and dance-y beats that are full of electrosynth sounds. The band are at their most compelling when lead vocalist Alice Glass in joined on stage by Ethan Kath. When the two combine, they make you feel like you’ve been transported into outerspace. This electro-punk show will get you lost in a web of experimental sound at Store Vega on March 2. Doors open at 20:00, and you can get transported for 200kr through billetlugen.dk. ’M A NEW YORKER in Copenhagen, and if there’s one thing that I hate about being an outsider, it’s being expected to be a tourist. My first week here involved seeing Nyhavn, perusing the shops on Strøget and going up to see the Little Mermaid. I toured Christiansborg Slots, rode the Dæmon at Tivoli and climbed the spiral steeple of the Church of our Saviour in Christianshavn. I’ve been here for a little under half a year now, though. I’m on to bigger − and cooler − things. Wondercool is exactly what I need. Smack in the middle of the worst part of the Danish winter, Wondercool will remind you why Copenhagen is so … well … cool.

This weekend is Fashion Week, and running alongside it is the Copenhagen Fashion Festival. So go thrift-sea diving at the flea market at Korsgadehallen. Party with the girls at Just Female. Or shop-hop around Copenhagen when Friday’s Fashion Night Out turns the streets into champagne bars (see G12 for full details). We’ve even got a super exclusive party to go to on Saturday − how ‘New York’. And that’s only fashion. ASHION IN Copenhagen is something you notice immediately. The Danes all look like models, and their ensembles always hit the perfect medium between “I just threw this on” and “I’m a sartorial genius.” As such, the city has become one of the fashion capitals of the world, and this weekend is here to celebrate that fact. The first Copenhagen fashion show was held at Bella Center in 1968, but the city didn’t host its first festival until 1981. Since then, Copenhagen Fashion Week has transformed from a small cat-

erpillar into an internationally-respected butterfly. Unfortunately, the fashion world is rife with secret passwords and exclusivity; Vivienne Westwood and French Connection aren’t likely to open their doors to just anyone. That’s where the Copenhagen Fashion Festival steps in to invite us mere mortals to play dress-up. The line-up for this weekend looks like a great mix of fashion and culture. JEREMY PIVEN’S brief appearance in Guy Ritchie’s RocknRolla suggested he might be a bit of an Anglophile, so it’s no surprise that the actor (Ari Gold in Entourage) has swapped LA for London for a new series about the establishment of one of the world’s most famous department stores in 1909. However, while Mr Selfridge, currently on UK and US TV, has scored highly with viewers (7.9 on IMDB), critics have been less impressed. Despite having Andrew Davies, Britain’s best period drama writer on board, they question how much drama can be derived about a store we all know was a huge success. Like Leonardo da Vinci. Then again, was he really better than Tony Hart? Now he was clever: the way he could draw a line here, another
