WOULD IT detract from the appealing nature of his art if I pointed out something underneath your nose? That’s right. Daniel Van der Noon (see G2 for details regarding his new exhibition) is the same DVDN who has been writing our music listings for the last four years. It kind of explains the cheeky photo caption, although that’s never stopped me in the past. “Cronyism,” you cry. “What do I need to do to get preferential treatment?” Well, very little. Write to us and we’ll do our best to fit you in somewhere if the event fulfils our very loose criteria. But Daniel, I think, is very worthy of the attention – it would appear that people very much enjoy looking at his art. Of course, he isn’t the first InOuter to leave for better pastures – we tend to attract his type: talented people we can exploit for as long as we can get away with it. The founder, Thomas Fleurquin, is of course Mr Distortion. Ben Clement, an assistant editor between 2007 and 2008, is an

award-winning architecture artist. Gabriel Birnbaum, who filled that position for most of 2009, is a relatively acclaimed songwriter called Boy Without God. Even Jeffrey Hunter, another music listings writer, had his moment in the media when he offered to pay 10,000 kroner to anyone who could get him a job … okay, I’ll stop there – you won’t get my point as there wasn’t really one. But for some reason, I have a feeling we haven’t heard the last of Eric B Duckert, who has decided to call it a day as the writer of Going Underground (see G8). In many ways, the column is a thankless task, and what I’ve discovered since launching it in 2011 is that the underground folk don’t like giving too much notice on their events. Still, it will return with a new writer in five weeks’ time – this supplement was founded as a gateway to the underground scene, and that won’t change on my watch. It’s just a shame the events are so hard to find out about. We on the other hand are giving you plenty of time to plan a trip to the reopening of the Red Lion (see G9) on February 1; and look out for our extensive coverage of the month-long Wondercool festival in next week’s issue. Yeah, we think ahead – that’s so uncool.

Before you say your eight-year-old could do that, ask yourself: Would they really have the patience?

Originally a student in literature and philosophy, the British artist relocated to Copenhagen several years ago on an exchange with the University of Leeds. Enticed by the country’s dreary climate – or rather, an artist residency in Aarhus – he later returned to Denmark with pen in hand and began to garner acclaim for his intricate-yet-playful drawings of cityscapes and skylines. And starting in February, Van der Noon will make another triumphant return, this time to Copenhagen to show a selection of his drawings at the Galleri Jules Julian − his first solo exhibition in the capital. This collection will showcase the styles that have become Van der Noon’s trademark: soaring skyscrapers, lively illustrations and his signature window drawings – urban horizons portrayed across glass surfaces. Van der Noon’s organically formed drawings have often been described as ornamentally naive, bringing a human aspect to the painstaking detail of his cityscapes. By analysing the framework through which

Georges Bizet’s classic opera is full of steamy Spanish passion, eroticism, raucous stage scenes and familiar songs that will have you swaying on your haunches. CS

buildings, roads and infrastructure are built, his elaborate drawings re-examine the mapping of cities and simultaneously have a powerful effect on the viewer’s imagination. The artist explains that he has long grappled with the concept of middle ground, be it between words and language or art and aesthetics. “My work has always been about both language, symbolism and, of course, architecture, and much of the work is a combination of all three,” Van der Noon told InOut. Two diverse styles operate within his drawings, he explained. The first is architectural pieces, including individual studies of buildings and extensive cityscapes. The second is what he calls ‘human equations’, or “automatic drawings churned out through long drawing sessions that emit stories, characters, theories, confessions, memories, dreams and thoughts in a random, illogical format”. It’s this bridging of styles that operates within the collection in this show, according to Van der Noon. The coming exhibition’s works can mainly be classified as architectural pieces – both individual studies on buildings and extensive cityscapes. They are created with meticulous detail and a simultaneously whimsical nature, blurring the lines between conceptual and figurative, real and fictitious. The title of his upcoming exhibition, ‘Selected Storeys’, plays with this very idea: the city as a fictitious concept. “The selected storeys aren’t just the storeys of a building, but also the numerous

Following his success with Cinderella in late 2011, Barry McKenna is once again the writer and director and promises a show that will delight and win over audiences of all ages. This Saturday and Sunday, there will also be an opportunity to get up and close with the actors and actresses after the show. EM

stories found on a single floor of an apartment block from the mind of a single person, of which there are billions packed in cities around the world,” Van der Noon explained. “It is a point of view of seeing the world from my closed circuit.” In this way, Van der Noon explained, the pieces speak collectively to questions about human perspective within a city. “The work, when constituted as a whole, is in its simplest terms, is about consciousness and the natural environments in which we display, nurture and hone that consciousness: the city.” Beyond his show at Jules Julian, Van der Noon has lofty aspirations for the future, hoping to expand the international success of his work across the world and garner urban recognition for his cityscapes. “My aims for the future are to find my art works in a Qatari art collection, and my cityscapes listed as republics, municipalities and principalities,” he jokes. “Although there are no real people living in these places, there are certainly more windows in my bigger city pieces than in the cities of smaller states – like San Marino, for example.” Galleri Jules Julian features contemporary works from Danish and international artists alike across various media and expressions. The opening of Van der Noon’s exhibition at the gallery will also feature music from Copenhagen-based DJ EIF (Fie Paarup).

Republique, Lille Scene, Østerfælled Torv 37, Cph Ø; ends Wed, performances Tue, Wed & Fri 20:00, Sat 17:00; tickets 40200kr; www.republique.dk Treat yourself to this roomful of aerial dance, a combination of acrobatics and dance with rigging and abseiling equipment thrown in - it makes traditional dance look like it’s from the Dark Ages. Two ‘spider-women’, Danish/Israeli dancer Esther Wrobel and French circus artist Emilie Loger run, dive, climb and throw themselves around their confines. They bring new meaning to Lionel Richie’s song ‘Dancing on the Ceiling’. Anyone going to see this piece should prepare for the extraordinary − if you think it can’t be done, it probably can. It’s as if Wrobel and Loger are part of some surreal game where the laws of gravity don’t apply. EM

Expect an impressive towering set, colourful projections, and a stage alive with a myriad of imaginatively costumed creatures and larger-than-life creepy-crawlies. PS

At the age of 15, he began studying lithography, and alongside his studies he taught himself to draw and paint. A year later, he bought his first camera and soon after started to work as a photographer. Steichen was a revolutionary – he was one of the first people in the USA to use a colour camera and therefore one of the earliest to experiment with colour photography. His work was groundbreaking, not only in terms of technique but also in terms of his approach, as he became part of the Pictorialist movement. Up until the Pictorialist movement, many maintained that photography was merely a recording of reality, but the movement sought out to prove that photography could be art too. The movement founded Pictorialism in

the photography world − a style where the photographer sought out to create an image or situation, rather than just record it. This is evident in Steichen’s portraits as well as the fact that in 1911 he became one of the very first fashion photographers. Despite being accused of selling out, Steichen was adamant that photographing fashion was an art form. He later moved into portraits and took some definitive pictures of celebrities such as Charlie Chaplin and Winston Churchill, many of which are on display at the exhibition. Steichen’s work is very broad and diverse, and the exhibition has a vast display of his stunning portraits, which range from stylish fashion portraits to ghostly black and white portraits dating back to the very beginning of the last century. There are also breathtaking landscapes, both in colour and black and white. There are furthermore some photographs of various situations, such as street photographs and experimental subjects that serve as a valuable documentation of life and the artform in the early decades of the 20th century. The photographs on display are multifaceted, not only in their nature but also due to the fact that Steichen’s work starts at the beginning of the 20th century and spans several decades. The exhibition also contains select photographs by

various other artists that serve as proof of his lasting influence on other artists and the world of photography as a whole. The exhibition is a mustsee for those who are devout fans of the medium, and no less so for those who know nothing of the artform, as you couldn’t wish for a better way

to take a beginners’ course on the history of photography. The exhibition is hosted by the National Museum of Photography, which has cleverly chosen the basement of the Black Diamond of the Royal Library. Although it might be seen as incidental, putting the exhibition on display in the

windowless basement accentuates the romantic atmosphere of the dim photographs − particularly the portraits. Apart from the temporary exhibitions, the Black Diamond houses the National Museum of Photograpy, the Royal Book Museum and the Danish Museum of illustration. The

central location of the Black Diamond, combined with the comparatively late opening hours, makes it an ideal place to unwind after a long day at work, as well as a lazy weekend stroll.

King of the Faroes who mixes with Swedish and songwriting royalty

F YOU haven’t seen Teitur play live, you haven’t experienced one of the Danish Kingdom’s true musical talents. The singer/songwriter is one of the most respected artists in the country, earning accolades both here and abroad. Possessing that rare ability to emotionally capture audiences, Teitur’s music is both haunting and beautiful.

His lyrics tell his story in a fresh and honest way and continue to change and mature as he does. Moving to Copenhagen as a teenager from the Faroe Islands, Teitur soon found work as a songwriter for a prominent LA-based publishing house. No small feat in itself, his work as a songwriter led to his first album, Poetry and Aeroplanes, which was released in the summer of 2003. Universally acclaimed and hailed as one of the most emotionally engaging albums of that year, he soon attracted the attention of American artist John Mayer, who became a vocal supporter of his music. The tour that followed had him play over 300

shows and open for the likes of artists such as Rufus Wainwright and Aimee Mann. After a messy break with his former label, Teitur released his second album, Stay Under the Stars, in 2006. More layered and featuring wider instrumentation, the album went gold in Denmark and was played on both US and Canadian radio. In the year that followed, Teitur released his third album, Káta Hornið. Written in his native language, the record saw him proudly acknowledge his Faroese background. Tietur isn’t just your average acoustic guitar man. He possesses a soulfulness rarely seen in modern musicians, while his

songs can be at once uplifting while at the same time brimming with sorrow. His music seems to harbour a dark secret − one that he tries to confess through the soft harmonies and melodies of his songs. He is without a doubt real, and it’s easy to see that he feels what he’s singing about. Teitur’s fourth album was recorded in 2008 and saw him move in a different direction. Dark, moody and often experimental, The Singer was recorded on the small island of Gotland in the summerhouse of a former Swedish princess. The location was aptly chosen, and the album has a sparse coldness to it that reflects the environment. Above

all, the album proved that Teitur is willing to go down paths that differ from his most popular songs − a trait that’s seen him transform time and time again. There are very few people who can say they’ve shared a beer with the late legendary blues artist Chris Whitley, but Teitur is among them. Considering both artists’ interest in simple, emotional songs, it’s easy to see how they got along. Their meeting was to be the inspiration for his song ‘Legendary Afterparty’ – chance encounters like these often worm their way into his writing. Teitur released a four-track EP, Four Songs, last year that

didn’t receive the attention it deserved. The songs are solid, original and unlike anything he’s done before, exemplifying the diversity he’s capable of. Another recent project saw him compose the soundtrack for a Dutch arthouse film. Teitur is renowned for trialling new material in his live shows. Expect to hear some new songs as well as the classics that made him famous. It’s well known that Teitur loves to perform in Copenhagen, so if there’s only one gig you should go to this month, this is it. ANDY RUGG

Brigadiers Release Party

Bakken, Flæsketorvet 17-19, Cph V; 21:00; free adm Better known for its all-night electro DJ sets and sweaty dance floor, the Berlin-style nightclub Bakken will play the role of alternative rock night club tonight, hosting the release party for the debut record of the Copenhagen-based cathartic noiserock outfit Brigadiers. Brigadiers, with their chaotic and uncompromisingly noisy dark rock, are underground through and through. Bolstered by a DJ set by Kristoffer Bech from the band Siny Darkly both before and after, it could prove to be an early start to the weekend with two Golden Ladies on sale for just 40kr.

A combination of electronic quirks, acoustic interludes and jolting dynamics, their ghostly folk taps into the fundamental elements that enrapture listeners of the likes of Grizzly Bear. Having seen this group on the offchance in a bar in Hamburg last year, during their warm-up tour before hitting the States, I can attest to their professional stage presence and inch-perfect acoustics as something to behold.

Delta Blues Band

Winding Road Recording Studios, Brofogedvej 10, Cph NV; 22:00; 515-715kr Paying homage to the rich history of the Delta blues – the Mississippi Delta was the birthplace of blues and modern rock ‘n’ roll – this five-bit band’s compositions are steeped in history while still being simple, raw and rugged. Having undergone various incarnations and hiatuses in their over 40-year run, the Delta Blues Band still maintain a lineup nearly identical to when they started in the 1960s. Tonight’s event is one worth bearing the Siberian weather conditions for and taking that dreaded trip into town.

Mojo Bar, Løngangstræde 21, Cph K; 21:30; free entry Not to be confused with the lead singer of Interpol, this Paul Banks is one of Mojo’s regular performers – an experienced, talented and quirky bluesman renowned for his measured style of easy-listening blues that transcends through his guitar and apt vocal style. Performing alongside Banks will be another blues guitarist and vocalist, Aske Jacoby and Jakob Dinesen, a notable saxophonist native to Copenhagen city. Tonight’s show is nothing too serious, but it’s certainly worth popping in for a drink and seeing what Mojo Bar is about: light, fun entertainment that is well supported by local musicians.

he Boston-based Celtic punk rockers returned to Vega last Monday with a strong, yet routine performance. As seasoned visitors to Vega, a significant portion of the crowd knew what to expect when the Irish party brigade started playing their invigorating take on folk combined with bonecrushing punk. But despite the severely dedicated fans being as enthralled and energetic as ever, it was a solid, yet hardly heartstopping performance, which was unfortunately riddled with technical problems throughout. Following a solid performance by the opening act, Britain’s Frank Turner, darkness swept the auditorium and the well-liquored audience started chanting so loudly they almost overpowered the ever famous in-

tro to ‘The Foggy Dew’. The band then entered to ‘The Boys are Back’, a bombastic, fist-pumping track, and the crowd went mental, maintaining a vigorous mosh pit throughout the entire show. Standing still was impossible, but despite the borderline violence, the crowd were attentive enough to help the less heavy and bulky individuals up should they fall. After overcoming some initial sound problems, the Murphys gained momentum with the epic ‘Going out in Style’, a testosterone-pumping and enrapturing song featuring some great bagpiping by Scruffy Walace. The madness then continued with ‘The Irish Rover’, a

folk song immortalised by The Dubliners. The Murphys’ supersonic and distorted take on the pub classic was devoured by the crowd – one of the highlights of the night. A solid 35 minutes into the set, a bruised and profusely sweating crowd needed a break from the moshing madness. The folksy drinking song ‘Jimmy Collins Wake’ was followed by the anthemic ‘Cadence to arms’, which gave the instrument section have a time to shine – a welldeserved break for the dedicated crowd. Returning to the roots of their fast-paced punk, the main set culminated in ‘Workers Song’ – a common dedication from the Murphys to the working classes of all nations.

“Let’s go Murphys! Let’s go Murphys,” the hoarse voices of the largely male-dominated audience chanted like hooligans. After a couple of minutes, the band returned with the old Murphys classic ‘Barroom Hero’ to the delight of some of the more veteran fans. As is a Dropkick Murphys tradition, all the ladies in the audience were invited onto the stage for a couple of songs. It was a pleasant gesture. Less thought out was a similar the invite to the gents who brought as much madness to the stage as there was in the mosh pit, especially during ‘Citizen Cia’, a ball-crushing punk track. The Dropkick Murphys are an incredible live band, but given their reputation, one could have expected a couple more anthemic songs, more interactivity with the crowd, and definitely better sound engineering. Happy Old New Year! TO ME 2013 feels double as promising and double as exciting as any year before it – why? Well, this year I celebrated New Year’s twice; yup – twice! My first New Year’s was very traditional: dinner with friends in Valby, massive private party in Nørrebro, blurry blackoutish hours, coming to at Hong Kong in Nyhavn, no bike, no money. Nausea and guilt trips. My second New Year’s was traditional in a different way and requires an introduction to a very special place in Copenhagen. In Amager there is a place called PB43. Now, way back when Amager was still mainly the industrial wasteland and junkyard of the capital, PB43 (Prags Boulevard 43) was a paint factory gushing out hundreds of thousands of gallons of paint and who knows how many toxins every month. But since the autumn of 2010, the old buildings have been taken over by creative occupants of all sorts: the modern hippies, one might say – you know, the kind that space out, break boundaries and all that, but do so firmly within the boundaries of capitalism − hence actually make a living from it. The 6,400 sqm ground of PB43 consists of four buildings hosting carpentry workshops, a contemporary art gallery, art studios, creative workspaces, a bicycle repair shop, community gardens and much, much more. And fortune will have it that the

One is the traditional one in our parts, apparently determined by the Gregorian calendar, according to which New Year’s is at midnight between December 31 and January 1, whereas the Julian calendar − used by the Russians until 1912 − celebrates New Year’s on the night of January 13. It is common in Russia to celebrate both, referred to respectively as the ‘new’ and the ‘old’ New Years. So, my second New Year’s this year was Old Russian New Years at the old paint factory at PB43 – and the contemporary hippies of PB43 do nothing ‘half assed’ − especially not a party. In the courtyard the rustic aesthetics of worn trailer homes, metallic remains, containers and community gardens are ruptured, pierced by massive light sculptures glowing in phosphorus white. The speakers pump charming beats of up-pace traditional Russian music, and people are sweating. Screaming, drinking, kissing, dancing. It is New Year’s indeed. In the centre of the courtyard a homemade sauna traffics naked people all night, infusing the dark night with pimpled asses and milky breasts. Inside vodka flows like honey. Groups of all but naked bodies mingle with the winter-dressed newcomers. Music throbbing. Jumping. Laughing. Madness level: New Year’s. Then darkness.

As snacks they offer free fruit and organic tea, and there’s sparkling water for when you fairly quickly reach the point of dehydration. Lucky for you, crumpets will soon be served up along with a happy selection of English comfort food at Copenhagen’s first English pub with grub, the Red Lion. The homesick and hungry will find comfort in the pub’s renowned friendly service: think the entertainment of Fawlty Towers, minus the crappy service. Formerly Sankt Nikolai Restaurant, the spacious pub will be relaunched with its new classic English pub name on February 1. Owner and chef Martin Popplewell says a little research revealed that there are 650 pubs in England called the Red Lion, “and that’s only the second most popular name” behind The Crown. But given how the Copenhagen pub is located in a historical red building dating back to the 1730s, the Red Lion was the obvious choice. There are a handful of Irish bars around town, but a true English pub is defined by its food. At the Red Lion this means pukka pies, pasties and sausage rolls – the fish and chips have been ramped up a notch and are now homemade with beer batter. If you book in advance, Sunday roasts can be whipped up with Yorkshire pud to boot. The Red Lion boasts a healthy selection of British ales including Fuller’s cask ale, Old Speckled Hen and Samuel Smith’s one-pint bottles. Kegs of Saint Austell’s Proper Job are currently being shipped across the North Sea, while beers from Belgium and a range of Danish microbreweries are also available, as is cider from Hereford.

Spas IF THIS MONTH in any way resembles previous Januarys, it means you are looking at some sort of impossible diet, a no alcohol regime and a need to make changes in your life – if only because everyone else seems to be doing exactly that. So if you want a break from all this, here are some suggestions for good spas, so at least for a little while, you can get away from all that.

Popplewell says plans are underway for a revamped pub quiz too.

Due to the crowds of punters expected on opening night, there will be no night menu, but a serving of chicken tikka masala and a pint will be 89kr, with single pints just 35 kr. I’M ONE-QUARTER Italian, as you might have guessed from my surname. I end up making a lot of Italian food in the name of heritage, but really, it’s just because it’s so delicious. Traditionally, this dish has been made with veal. I used pork, but chicken also works well with this recipe. It’s entirely up to you. After all, who doesn’t love fried meat? What I like about this recipe is the mileage it has. Not only does it work as a nice dinner meal, but the leftovers can be used for lunch the following day, taking on the classic lunch meal form: a sandwich. The meat for the sandwich

can be sliced thinly, which is classier and you get more bang for your buck. But if you’re feeling hungry, like I was, you can just slap on a whole cutlet. Here are a couple of tips. The key to pounding meat is to place the meat between two sheets of plastic wrap; otherwise, the meat mallet will shred the meat up too much. The advantage to pounding the meat thin is that the cooking process is quick and the meat doesn’t have time to dry out. The pork chops can also be prepared up to four hours ahead, up until the point that they are coated in the breadcrumb mixture (but prior to cooking). Just cover and refrigerate.

Pork Milanese (& Sandwich) (4 servings) 40g flour, for dredging 2 large eggs, beaten to blend 145g plain dried breadcrumbs 65g grated Parmesan cheese 2 tsp dried basil 1 tsp dried thyme 4 225g center-cut pork loin chops (each about 2.5cm thick) 1 tsp salt 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper 2 tbsp butter 80ml vegetable oil 1 lemon, cut into wedges For the sandwich (2 servings): Pork Milanese 2 rolls ½ ripe avocado, sliced 2 tsp extra-virgin olive oil 1 tsp balsamic vinegar pinch of salt and pepper 1 medium tomato, sliced 25g arugula leaves

PLACE the flour in a wide, shallow bowl. Place eggs in another wide, shallow bowl. Mix breadcrumbs, Parmesan, basil, and thyme in a third wide, shallow bowl. Pound the pork chops until they are 6mm thick. Sprinkle them with salt and pepper. Working with one chop at a time, dredge in flour to coat lightly, and dip into the beaten eggs, allowing excess egg to drip off. Finally, coat them with the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to adhere. In a pan, melt the butter in the oil over medium heat until hot. Carefully place pork chops in the oil mixture and cook until light golden brown, about three minutes per side. For the sandwich, mash avocado onto the bread. In a medium bowl, whisk together oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. Add tomato and arugula and toss to coat. Divide the arugula mixture between the two bottom pieces of bread, add the Pork Milanese, and cover with the top pieces of bread.

LA VECCHIA Enoteca … doesn’t the mere sound of this name transport you to a place where food is art and dining is pure pleasure for all the senses? I certainly had big expectations for the restaurant that bears this name, but the experience I ended up having was something that so rarely happens: when your expectations are greatly surpassed. La Vecchia Enoteca was for many reasons exactly the kind of restaurant I was looking to write about here: small enough to give you a cosy feeling when inside; remote enough to not be over-popular or in danger of becoming so, but still easy to find; and maybe most importantly, one that seeks to promote wine as the central element of the dinner. Its name directly translates as ‘the old cellar’, which immediately brings to mind the wide selection of fine wines served to complement its dishes. As one of six fine dining restaurants owned by Spisitaliensk, it is arguably the company’s best-kept secret, most probably due to its location. Serving a neighbourhood just outside of Copenhagen, it is located on Søengen, just minutes away by foot from Holte Station. Nevertheless, it’s fair to say that the chic wine restaurant is buzzing every night. If I were to make one negative remark about the place, it would definitely be the noise. This isn’t helped by the location, as there are no separate sections – once you enter, what you see is what you get. Just a few tables to the left, and a few to the right – once you’ve walked past a couple more, you’re already at the counter, a hive of activity where they serve a mini-buffet for brunch, available once it opens its doors at noon. My companion and I were lucky enough to be welcomed to stay right up to closing time at 23:00 (kitchen closes at 22:00 on weekdays), which we saw in with a couple of old Danish patrons discussing personal beliefs that are strongest felt after a few too many glasses of good wine! In the meantime we witnessed a great variety of people pass through its doors: wellto-do locals, young and elderly couples, families and friends, and a girls’ night out. It’s clear that the restaurant does not target a certain demographic, but rather those who appreciate the restaurant’s ethos on food. Serving a menu that changes every couple of months or so, the dishes combine Scandinavian and British twists into Italian recipes. Everything is freshly made in-house (I still cannot get that amazing

rye bread out of my head!) or imported directly from selected producers (like the delicious creamy Italian goat’s cheese that made my goat’s cheese hating friend beg for more!). The chef’s ambition is to change the way people typically visit a restaurant and choose the a la carte classics. While he knows that many will hold onto their preferences for dishes like the Linguini with lobster or the Veal with tuna sauce and capers, to name only a couple, the chef is hopeful he can entice them with his own ecologically-made signature dishes.

Take his smoked salmon for instance! This Scandinavian specialty is brought in from nearby waters and is smoked using a special process right next to the restaurant, under the chef’s careful supervision. The taste is sublime, but if you don’t like your fish smoked, try the cod fish – its ingenious combination with pickled winter vegetables really makes it stand out! But however good the food might be, some people like to use it as an excuse to have dessert. If you have a sweettooth, then you will be blown away by

the complementary chocolates that Chef lays out for you next to the coffee and the star dessert of this restaurant: the Tiramisu with pineapple sorbet! To say that I spent five hours in this restaurant eating and drinking would be a sinful understatement of what I actually did. It was the closest I’ve ever come to a gourmet out-of-body experience. And by the time I’d floated back down to earth, it was fair to say that my views on food had changed forever.

Django’s chain gang is anything but a weak link KASPER R GULDBERG

ARANTINO’S EAGERLY anticipated pastiche of the western epic has caused more controversy and generated more press than most Oscar-winning masterpieces manage over an entire awards season. That statement was even true two weeks ago, before it won Golden Globe accolades for best screenplay and best supporting actor (Waltz). And it shouldn’t surprise you. It’s a bold, throbbing, exuberantly crafted piece of work – one that rattles cages with a vengeance. If the N-word and the cascading blood don’t make you blanch, the crackling dialogue, precise cinematography and dazzling stunt work probably will – to say nothing of the story, of course. It’s true that Tarantino is nowadays such a cult legend and fan-boy magnet that even if you personally aren’t feeling the vibe you will, possibly to your irritation, be surrounded by movie-goers revelling in the melodramatic machismo and laughing a bit too loudly at Waltz’s razor-sharp lines. If there’s some Tarantino agnosticism left in you, you won’t thank your fellow (male) viewer for punching the air when Jamie Foxx, with aggressive self-confidence, shows off his quick-draw revolver prowess. For me, at any rate, self-admiring, semi-cathartic moments like these tend to let the air out of the balloon. They’re just too easy, somehow. But Django Unchained does something else, and does it so well, that I’m willing to accept the showy bravado that is so often reducible to guns, blood anda lust for revenge. What the film manages, to my pleasant surprise, is to conduct a

joyride through old Dixie while simultaneously building up to a passionate climax steeped in heartbreaking romance and pacifistic, moral indignation. That odyssey starts out two years before the American Civil War when the German immigrant and bounty hunter Dr King Schultz (Waltz) ‘lights out for the territory’ with Django (Foxx), a slave whom he offers to free in return for Django’s help in identifying the ruthless Brittle Brothers, wanted dead or alive. The successful and well-balanced alliance soon turns into a rare friendship making Schultz, who morally objects to slavery, promise to help Django find

and free his wife Broomhilda (Washington). Broomhilda’s current owner is the sadistic and oily Calvin Candy (DiCaprio in a sinister and expansive performance) whose nauseating, decaying teeth represent the state of his morality. Careful plans to rescue Broomhilda are hatched and patiently executed by the gunslinging duo foreshadowing an epic and heroic culmination. However, Calvin’s trusted, racist-to-the-bone house slave, the mid-70s Uncle Tom figure Stephen (Jackson), hasn’t been groomed or manipulated out of intuiting what makes a man like Django tick. The shocking,

suspenseful scenes that follow – and often explode in either violence or precious moments of tenderness – make it impossible for even the sceptic to resist the power of the story. Concerning the largely American controversy surrounding Tarantino’s favourite racial epithet and penchant for graphic violence in the shape of gleefully doled-out revenge, well, it was pretty much to be expected. What’s much more surprising is the film’s remarkable ability to weave together a number of dazzling sub-genre elements as it goes along: spaghetti western obviously sets the scene, yet turns into epic adventure

with the rescue mission. Then a great buddy flick/road-movie gets underway that morphs into no-nonsense action and exploitation – while elements of romance with some comedy thrown in let you breathe. The Tarantino trademarks are aplenty, but the film doesn’t buckle under their weight, and the writerdirector, who appears in a cameo, has matured. Besides, the simple fact that the leading chronicler of modern-day American popular culture has managed to tackle the slave issue with such confidence and candidness while telling one hell of a story would have been enough to sell the film.

HIS FILM, directed by Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage) and based on the real-life experiences of a Spanish family (British, in this film) caught in the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, rarely lets up the pace. We’re introduced to Henry (McGregor) and Maria Bennet (Watts) as their flight is

about to touch down in Thailand. There’s some domestic tittle-tattle about their kids and whether they remembered to set the security alarm as they left the house, but it all boils down to ‘we love our kids, we love each other, everything is great and this narrative requires you to love us too’. Fine. Absolutely necessary, but easily the weakest part of the film: it feels contrived, the dialogue is clunky and McGregor and Watts seem uneasy with each other. From here though, it’s hard to remember a film in which I have felt so emotionally overwhelmed that I considered, at one point, leaving the auditorium for air.

Perhaps the film’s impact is enhanced considerably depending on whether you have children or not. Much of the narrative centres around the separation of the family and their attempts to find each other in the aftermath of this nightmarish event. What the filmmakers get absolutely right is the sheer physical force of the tsunami’s arrival and the all-encompassing hopelessness that follows. The moments before the wave hits are meticulously recreated, with early signs like loss of electricity, birds fleeing overhead and finally the view of distant trees being uprooted as the devastating wall of water approaches. It is sometimes hard to

watch as the characters are severely and relentlessly battered under the weight and speed of the water. This is largely due to the flawless effects, which look absolutely authentic in their scope and brutality, favouring miniatures and practical water effects over digital FX (but employing a mixture of these techniques). In this, Bayona and his team must be saluted, because it was likely a hard sell for insurers and financiers – but the work pays off tenfold, resulting in a tough realism that no doubt informs the performances and the emotional clout of the entire film. See this, and then go and hug your kids. MARK WALKER

Dir: Ruben Fleischer; US action/crime, 2013 113 mins; Josh Brolin, Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte This film is little more than a weak-wristed remake of Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables, offering such a mirror-image set of the characters that one feels genuinely offended by the lack of effort. Furthermore, Gangster Squad doesn’t seem to know what it wants to be when it grows up: on the one hand highly stylised and precise, it also possesses allusions to pulp and pastiche. Untouchable is certainly a fine way of regarding the film, but if you do insist, a barge pole is highly recommended. AS

Searching for Sugar Man (15) Dir: Malik Bendjelloul; Swe/ US/SA doc, 2012, 86 mins If you disappear into obscurity after an undistinguished music career, you can always take pride in the fact that halfway across the world a nation is being inspired by your music to start a revolution against a racist oppressive regime. That’s at least what happened in the case of US ‘70s rocker Rodriguez, who was a hero to many during the South African struggle against apartheid. Swedish filmmaker Bendjelloul follows two South African fans as they try to find out what happened to their hero, and the result is as compelling as a real-life detective story. LL

Texas Chainsaw 3D (15) Dir: John Luessenhop; US horror, 2013, 101 mins; Bill Moseley, Alexandra Daddario, Tania Raymonde Just when horror fans thought they were safe, Tobe Hooper’s 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre storyline has been unleashed onto the big screen yet again, now in horrendous 3D. This time we’re transported 29 years into the future, where young Heather (Daddario) inherits her late grandmother’s estate and, upon arrival, discovers a six-foot-five terror lurking in the basement. Do yourself a favour and do anything other than pay to see this film. LR

Hope Springs (11) Dir: David Frankel; US romcom, 2012, 100 mins; Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones, Steve Carell, Mimi Rogers While the trailer makes this film look like a syrupy sex romp, only a mournful tale of relationship turmoil lurks beneath the slapstick jokes and sarcastic jibes of Hope Springs. Short on laughs and drama alike, the film reduces a couple’s reconciliation efforts to 100 minutes of bickering, crying, and attempts at intimacy. LR

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (11) Dir: Bill Condon; US fantasy, 2012, 119 mins; Kristin Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Dakota Fanning, Ashley Greene, Nikki Reed, Michael Sheen The enormously lucrative franchise that is The Twilight Saga finally comes to an end. And thank god for that. As we’ve come to expect from the last four films, Part 2’s soap-operaesque script, lacklustre direction and mind-numbing melodrama are the film’s biggest problems. But perhaps the scariest part of all comes with the introduction of some new characters, which leaves the door open for potential spin-offs. Now there’s a scary thought. LR

Also Playing Frankenweenie (11) Dir: Tim Burton; US anim at i o n / c o m e d y / h o r r o r, 2012, 87 mins; Charlie Tahan, Winona Ryder, Martin Short, Martin Landau Frankenweenie harkens back to a time when Burton wasn’t boring us with films made by his left hand, when his filmmaking crackled with innovation and originality. This is far from a perfect film, however. The narrative engine occasionally peters out, and the audience is left waiting for the narrative slack to pick up. Frankenweenie may not be as effective as his other films, but Burton the filmmaker is no longer on autopilot – he has been reanimated, he’s alive! MW

Beasts of the Southern Wild (11) Dir: Benh Zeitlin; US drama/ fantasy, 2012, 94 mins; Quvenzhané Wallis, Dwight Henry, Levy Easterly, Lowell Landes Based on the play Juicy and Delicious by Lucy Alibar, this film adaptation is essentially a charming children’s coming-ofage story – a moralistic fairy tale told through magical realism. Protagonist Hushpuppy’s dedication to her father is as heartbreakingly beautiful as young Wallis’s perfectly cast face, but the film’s occasional dabbling in sentimentality, along with an overbearing score and an overreliance on voiceovers prevents the film from achieving the transcendence it aims for. MW

Dir: Christopher McQuarrie; US action/horror, 2012, 130 mins; Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Robert Duvall, Richard Jenkins Cruise is the eponymous antihero here: an enigmatic exmilitary cop bringing criminals to justice. While he may not have the blonde locks or towering height, the pint-size patron saint of Scientology is strong here, and the embellished script allows space for the supporting cast to shine. A scattering of good moments, however, can’t stop Jack Reacher from overstaying its running time – the film takes itself far too seriously to be mindless entertainment. LR

Dir: Peter Jackson; US/New Zealand Adventure/Fantasy, 2012, 169 mins; Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Hugo Weaving The grandiloquence of the film will please the fanatics, but leave those on the fence potentially nauseous. Although some of the performances impress, the storyline is flabby, and the writers struggle to hatch a consistently entertaining story to meet the film’s excessive length. LR

Life of Pi (11) Dir: Ang Lee; US Adventure/ drama, 2012, 130 mins; Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Gerard Depardieu, Rafe Spall, Tabu This beautiful adventure movie is an absolute must-see, even if the plot stinks. It’s a bottomless box of visual delights: colours have never been so vivid. But although writer David Magee does his best to cloak a very corny plot, elements of the baggy original novel still creep in. Despite the narrative compromise, the film is a much-needed bit of heart-warming magic during the frosty season. LR

Argo (15) Dir: Ben Affleck; US thriller, 2012, 120 mins; Ben Affleck, John Goodman, Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin, Clea Duvall, Tate Donovan, Victor Garber While Affleck has gone to some lengths to deliver a restrained and tasteful film, the script itself is determined to show off, with the climax taking every opportunity to ratchet up the drama quite shamelessly. It might make for highly entertaining cinema, but falls short in convincing us of the narrative’s authenticity. For a film about disguise, this film masquerades as one belonging to the dangerous fringes of political filmmaking, but reveals itself to be quite mainstream and, like Affleck himself, a little more ordinary than it really should be. IMAGINE the worst possible person to be stopped in the street by: a Jehovah’s Witness, a scientologist, or a market researcher who turns out to have a terrible stammer … and then treble it. Because that’s right, the trollops of barely discernible taste are pounding the streets of Denmark in search of clueless Claras and hopeless Hannes to take them down a peg or two, give them something new to hang on them, and make them look less fat, past it and like they only sleep with cats. Trinny and Susannah’s Makeover Mission: Denmark (K4, Sat 19:00 or Sun 20:00, Thu 20:00) is a tale of woe of how four women in this country will never allow themselves to be stopped in the street again.

There’s no doubt the gruesome twosome would have told Lena Dunham she was going nowhere with the way she looked, but it hasn’t stopped the star, creator and writer of Girls, HBO’s latest hit show, becoming one of Hollywood’s hottest properties in the space of a year. Is Dunham Tinseltown’s answer to Susan Boyle? Probably. Does she write too many sex scenes with good looking young men for her flatchested, wobbly-hipped character? Undoubtedly. Is it worth watching? Most certainly. The premiere of Girls is the highlight of the first ever week of DR3, a new free-to-air channel from DR. Of course, had TV2 Zulu won the rights, it would have shown the whole thing in a

week: “Splodge, have it viewers! You were only going to download it, save it for a hangover and watch it in one sitting!” The fourth season of True Blood (Sun 09:50) will do nicely. Elsewhere, feature length TV drama Stuart: A Life Backwards, starring Benedict Cumberbatch DR3, Thu 20:00 Girls and Tom Hardy, is an unexpected treat; there’s another chance to see acclaimed serial killer series The Bletchley Circle (DR1, Sun 21:45) – this time on free-to-air; don’t miss the two weeks old Golden Globes; Addicted to Tattoos (DR3, Mon 21:30) pretty much speaks for itself; and 2011 miniseries Ice (TV3+, Sun 21:30) is a futuristic yawn set in Greenland – the title sounds like wishful thinking.
