TWIN PEAKS was my Morrissey, it was my Oasis. As a latent teen in the south of England who thought acid house was a new kind of abattoir, The Stone Roses and their like passed me by. I was growing up fast and needed a bad influence to encourage me to be moody and take hallucinogenic drugs. When it came, it permeated me like no other.

Manchester had Bez, but I had Bob. This coming Thursday, Vega will welcome many such devotees, intrigued to see what their Twin Peaks theme night (see G2 for details) will consist of. Many will dress up, others won’t but claim they’ve come as Leo (especially if they’re sitting down), and some might even come in character, after slaying a teenage girl and dumping her body on the beach in a plastic sheet.

Whatever they do, they’ll do it with style and without reason. For at the essence of Twin Peaks was its postmodernism. The net is awash with graveyard Q & A sites, where every other answer is: “Nobody knows! Not even David Lynch!”

The Marriage of Figaro

And even when there’s an answer, it’s incredulous. Like the population. On the sign it says 51,201, but apparently this was a late addition by a network executive fearful that urban audiences would switch off during the opening credits. Its real population is 5,120 – a typo it was later claimed.

The theme evening would do well to consult the owner of The Log Lady café (see G9 for details) in the city centre. Her homage to the series aims to capture its atmosphere, not give every visitor a visual journey through all 30 episodes. It’s tastefully done and the ideal place to start my own little homage.

I’ll probably need to wrap up warm, though. With 6cm of snow expected on Saturday, and minus temperatures all next week, we could be in for a white December, let alone Christmas. And this issue is again accordingly festive with a guide to the best places to buy decorations (see G9), three Christmas pub quizzes (G8-9), numerous markets (G8), a heads-up on this year’s panto (G8) and a recipe for festive turkey that doesn’t involve you having to roast the thing for five hours.

The cast of Twin Peaks sang a version of ‘The 12 Days of Christmas’ once. Bob sings the “three possessed souls” verse. Don’t ask me why: “Nobody knows! Not even David Lynch!”.

FOR TWO DAYS in December, the Royal National Theatre will host Mozart’s bittersweet comedic opera, The Marriage of Figaro (originally Le Nozzi de Figaro). This muchloved opera, performed by Den Jyske Opera, witnesses the rollercoaster emotions during the course of a chaotic, action-packed day of intrigue and misunderstandings. All shades of the emotional palette are embraced: from lust, transgression and jealousy, to commitment and forgiveness. These desires and emotions spin dramatically out of control as the day of madness unfolds − all set to the magical music of Mozart.

On the surface, it may seem like an almost slapstick comedy of errors, in which all the characters seem hell-bent on following their own self-serving instincts and desires.

But the story of the opera − a political and psychological dramatisation of the aristocratic hierarchy set to a simply stunning orchestration that subtly personifies the individual characters − is so much more than that.

Figaro has its origins in a play by Beaumarchais that was banned by the French monarchy and that only had its première in 1784 – by that time, the writing was on the wall for Louis XVI. Transforming the piece into an opera must have been quite the political hot potato in the censorious atmosphere of Joseph II’s Vienna, where the play had also been banned. The librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte wrote his script in poetic Italian and removed the obvious political references to get the censor’s approval. Although the rascally aristocrats do get their comeuppance in Figaro, what was really fascinating for Mozart and Da Ponte is the sheer human drama that ensues from the twists, turns and entanglements on the unforgettable day of Figaro’s wedding.

The Danish National Opera’s production from 2006 provides everything that the discerning opera-goer would expect: exuberant costumes, an aesthetically effervescent staging and high musical standards, both on and off stage. Set in the Seville of the late 18th century, the performance has costumes inspired by the vibrant colours and imagery of Spanish artist Goya. Robert Bøgelund Vinther’s staging (based on Jan Maagaard’s original) of this operatic masterpiece has more than lived up to its billing. Two strong teams of singers combine with conductor Per Otto Johansson, who expertly leads the

Just look at The Killing and Borgen.” The plot sees ‘Vivienne’ decide she’s had enough of the CCC and decide to adapt a longlost Hitchcock script. Her actors vow to dispense of her quickly. LL

outstanding team of soloists supported by the Copenhagen Philharmonic.

From the comic fanfare of the opening overture to the dramatic explosive climax, the powerful score defines the emotional and expressive universe that captivates the audience. The emancipated atmosphere allows the personal turmoil of the main characters Figaro, Susanna, the Count and Countess to be reflected in the arias Mozart composed for them. Cherubino’s seemingly uncontrollable urges come to fruition in ‘Non so più cosa son’ and ‘Voi che sapete’, the Count’s furious rage is given full vent in ‘Hai giá vinta la causu’, and Figaro’s moving ‘Aprite un po’ quegli occhi’. Perhaps the most affecting music is reserved for the women: the Countess’s tragic and poignant ‘Porgi, amor’ or Susanna’s entrancing ‘Deh vieni’. However, it is Mozart’s ensemble music that assaults the senses, most famously in the finale of Act II in which the mounting tension is brilliantly interpreted with one of the longest uninterrupted pieces of music ever composed by Mozart.

Over the years, opera has acquired an unfair reputation for being inaccessible − a secret world reserved for the privileged classes and cultural elite. But the register of emotions and themes is universal and the cocktail of song, music, costumes, dance and special effects are instantly recognisable from Hollywood to Bollywood. For those yet to experience opera first hand, the Old Stage in Kongen’s Nytorv provides both an elegant setting and a typical Danish informality for such occasions, which means you can leave your gala dresses and dinner jackets at home.

Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro is a classic of its kind and is the perfect introduction to the enchanting world of opera.

The 2006 performances received rave reviews, and the 2012 reviews have been no less enthusiastic with standing ovations at all performances. Lean back in the sumptuous surroundings of the Gamle Scene and succumb to the overwhelming theatrical and musical experience that is The Marriage of Figaro.

The waitresses, both clad in snappy teal uniforms, dole out coffee refills and scrambled eggs from behind the counter. Cool jazz pulsates from above while a detective in a trench coat picks at a slice of cherry pie and mutters unintelligibly into a tape recorder.

Perhaps it feels like you’re sitting at the Double R in Twin Peaks, but in reality the spectacle playing out in front of you is merely a TV screen.

And that Bobby Briggs lookalike over there? He’s actually a shop owner from Nørrebro.

In reality, this scene is a long way from, and two decades on, the small-town audiences have come to love – you’re at Vega’s Twin Peaks Theme Evening.

Since Laura Palmer, the fictional teenager whose murder kick-started the series, first washed up on television screens in 1990, David Lynch’s Twin Peaks has garnered a fiercely devoted fan base (read: cult following)

Tornerose (Sleeping Beauty)

and been hailed as one of the highest-rated series of all time. FBI Agent Dale Cooper is brought in to investigate the young girl’s demise and inadvertently untangles a further web of mystery, as it turns out that Laura’s death is not the only mystery in town – nearly all of the characters conceal darker secrets beneath a campy exterior.

The eccentricity and intrigue of Twin Peaks come to Copenhagen on Thursday night when Vega’s Ideal Bar pays homage to the cult classic. The event is the latest in Vega’s ‘Din Koncert’ (‘Your Concert’) series, in which selected organisers are invited to run the show for one evening, selecting all the musical content, themes and visuals.

Following an intro of selected scenes from the series to warm up both die-hard Cooper fans and newbies alike, Denmark’s own electropop singer Freja Loeb will take the stage as the musical headliner of the evening. Instead of performing original music, however, Loeb and her band will depart from their signature tunes for the night and reinterpret favourites like ‘World Spins’ and ‘Falling’ from the Twin Peaks universe.

hen thinking about the Danish music scene, upbeat pop music by artists such as Alphabeat, Rasmus Seebach and Medina might be the first thing that comes to your mind. But dig a little deeper (or ask your hipster friend for help) and you’ll find a world of underground bands and music that is just about as varied as a Danish pick’n’mix

candy bar. One of those bands is Billow, a hip-hop group from Copenhagen, who won the award for best Urban Musician at the 2012 Danish Underground Music Awards.

The band is led by Bashir Billow who, when he’s not rapping in a steady East Coast flow, croons soulful melodies with a honeyed voice that’s reminiscent of D’Angelo back in the day. Supporting him are a live band consisting of brothers Mathias and Jakob Miang, who play drums and guitar respectively, Mads Østergaard on keyboard and Anders Hellborn on bass. The final touch is given by the DJ, Sebastian Thielke, and the mesmerising Rezwan Farmi who

sings backing vocals.

The band come from Nørrebro and the melting pot feeling of the area is definitely present in their music. They count The Roots, Lauren Hill and Mos Def among their influences and, although they are big old school names, it would not be unjust to compare the band to them: the music is soulful hiphop with an enticing rhythm that’s bound to get you moving.

The band may have only been active for a little over two years, but they have been slowly building up a steady following – they released a single earlier this year, ‘Mental Picture’, which once heard is impossible to get out of your

head. They’re planning on releasing another single with a video soon, but even though they are in the process of recording, fans might need to wait a little longer for a studio album. Until then, their presence on the Danish live music scene is welcome as there aren’t that many quality Danish hip-hop artists who choose to rap in English. Their decision to perform in English also allows for their deep and sometimes political lyrics to be understood by non-Danes, which is great, not only if you’re a band looking for international recognition, but also for those of us who live in Copenhagen but find the idea of learning Danish challenging (to say the least).

Billow will be playing this Saturday at the trendy KB18 in the Meatpacking District. The concert at Kødboderne promises to be a good one as Billow is first and foremost a live band. Frontman Bashir says they love to perform and interact with the audience and that, essentially, they’re all about having a party with fellow hip-hop enthusiasts.

The best part? Rumour has it that some brand new tunes might make their debut at the concert, and since the band doesn’t have any other big gigs lined up until January, this is a golden opportunity to go and catch one of the hottest urban acts in Copenhagen today.

Amager Bio; 20:00; 275kr The sister of the flamboyant and multi-award winning singer-songwriter Rufus and the daughter of legendary American folk singer Loudon Wainwright, Martha made her foray into the pop world as a classical violinist. It wasn’t until the mid-‘00s that she released her self-titled debut album, which set off the comparisons between her style and that of indie-rock musician Joan as Police Woman. Beyond your run-of-the-mill pop fodder, Wainwright’s music is patently unique, even if a tad mundane to most.

Hymns From Nineveh

Vor Frelsers Kirke, Sankt Annægade 29, Cph K; 20:00; 140kr The seven-bit all-Danish band offer delicately crafted folk-pop that has found a niche in the Danish alternative music scene. Performing a handful of songs from their 2011 Christmas/winter album, Endurance in Christmas Time, they’ll be winding back the clock with a repeat concert of last year’s show at Vor Frelsers Kirke. While most bands try to grab attention with loud, in-your-face beats and clichéd lyrics, the Hymns instead sit quietly in the corner, tapping piano keys and playing violins, flutes and acoustic guitars. Stand a little closer and you may like what you hear.

One-Eyed Mule

Lille Vega; 21:00; 130kr The Danish trio are firmly rooted in the American folk tradition, capturing the country’s historic soundscape with organs, sitars, banjos, and a handful of homemade instruments. With their fourth album, When Tomorrow Comes, released earlier this year, they’ve stamped their authority, as Denmark’s primary Americana outfit, turning out dustbowl ballads reflecting the band’s deep understanding of folk history such as ‘Mild and Warm (To Mississippi John Hurt)’, ‘September Sigh’, and ‘When Tomorrow Comes’.

Store Vega; 20:00; 225kr Regarded as one of Denmark’s quirkier pop bands, Alphabeat’s sugary pop-rock has gained success across the continent and topped the charts in Denmark and the Netherlands and even done well in UK. Best known for their summery hit ‘Fascination,’ the Danes’ ‘80s-inspired hits have ruled the Danish radio station P3’s A-list since the band’s formation in the mid00s. Often featured on the cover of teen pop magazines in neoncoloured head-bands and hightops, it goes without saying that Alphabeat’s probably one for the younger crowd.

HHHHHH November 17 Falkoner Salen atching 76-yearold Kris Kristofferson live is like seeing a living, breathing bit of American history. Yeah, that’s a cliché, but sometimes the cliché is the shortest distance to the truth.

It’s all there. The hot, sexy beginning, filled with promise and invention. The middle years, clogged with excess and loss of purpose. And finally, the realisation that the best days may be past, but the struggle continues to redefine, reinvent and perhaps become relevant once again.

Kristofferson arrived on stage at promptly 9pm. A Texas gentleman does not keep his guests waiting. Approaching his eighth decade, Kristofferson remains razor-thin, classically

handsome and radiates the kind of presence that only years and miles can bring.

Playing most of the night alone, Kristofferson’s plainspoken voice and simple guitar and harmonica playing stripped every song to its essence – and these are sturdy songs. Countless versions by tone-deaf bar bands have not dulled the simple brilliance of ‘Help Me Make It Through the Night’ or ‘Me and Bobby McGee’.

Make no mistake; Kristofferson is no virtuoso musician.

Your uncle with six months of lessons under his belt is probably a better guitarist, but noone comes to a Kristofferson show expecting flash guitar solos; it is the songs and the man that matter.

Kristofferson’s ageing voice actually serves his canon well.

A song like ‘Lovin’ Her Was Easier Than Anything I’ll Ever Do Again’ becomes even more powerful when sung by a man who sounds like he has lived

long enough to make that claim with authority.

Kristofferson’s daughter Kelly joined him on a few songs to sing harmony and hold, but never really play a banjo. She has a great voice and brought a sparkle to her dad’s eye, but her contribution was slight − their musicianship never rose above the holiday camp father/daughter talent show level.

The mid-to-slow tempo of Kristofferson’s catalogue confused that part of the crowd bound and determined to clap along and turn every song into a Dubliner’s rave-up − the original pace of the tune be damned. To his credit, Kristofferson never allowed the audience to alter his staid delivery.

When he appeared on the scene in Nashville in the 1960s, Kristofferson scared the establishment to death. His songs that unabashedly acknowledged that people had sex when they weren’t married, sometimes smoked dope and were often hungover

on Sunday morning caused one tradition-bound country star to sneer: “Great, now Nashville has its very own hippie.”

An icon now himself, the best of very few spoken moments were when, struggling with a cold, he looked out at the crowd and deadpanned: “Y’all paid a lot of money to watch an old fart blow his nose,” and at the end of the break-up ballad ‘Nobody Wins’, when he paused and said: “Well, somebody won … Obama won … so the whole world won.”

There is still some grit in the old hippie after all.

There is a scene in a horrid 1984 film called Songwriter in which Kristofferson’s character climbs dishevelled from the hotel bed, looks at the mirror without taking off his sleep mask and says: “You good looking son of a bitch, don’t you ever die.”

On one chilly Copenhagen evening, a room full of people shared that sentiment.

Their ninth record, Resistance, released earlier this year, earned a ‘thumbs up’ from punk music experts Sputnik.com. Sure to create a bit of a stir in Christiana, where Loppen is located, it’s advised to arrive early as the venue can only manage a few hundred people.

The selfdefined ‘discodudes’ enjoyed immediate hype and were sent on a whirlwind tour of Scandinavia before international offers started flooding in, booking gigs all over Europe and the US. Koncerthuset; 20:00; 295370kr Formed back in 1967, the psychedelic rock group led by husband and wife Thomas and Annisette Koppel are hailed as one of Denmark’s most influential bands in rock history.

Their eclectic brand of progrock, psychedelic and classical jazz elements, paired with Anisette’s Janis Joplin-tinged vocals saw the group become one of Scandinavia’s most celebrated acts. While the unfortunate departure of Thomas has left Annisette alone on stage, fans unite in celebrating the band’s history for practically every one of Annisette’s solo concerts.

Daniel van der Noon house DJ and producer, half of the dance duo Way Out West and a member of the Global Underground collective, who’ve played stages from Budapest to Lima. Releasing his Renaissance Master’s series album this month, house fanatics will pile up at the entrance – so be sure to book in advance.

These guys have been on the scene for far longer, but Denmark is still crazy about them. Love Shop, the Danish pop and rock group, are coming back for another show after their last one sold out.

With a comeback in 2010, the band gave the world Love Shop’s eighth album, Salvation Army, and it was named the year’s best album by Politiken. With their ninth album released last month, Love Shop is on a roll, and loyal fans are lapping up the opportunities to see their beloved band back on the stage where they should be. Or try one of the most famed spots in Denmark – Jazz House is hosting a concert to ring in the new year with Pierre Dørge & New Jungle Orchestra.

Their music is an eclectic mixture of jazz, Asian, African and European music, and it is something you won’t want to miss.

After the New Year, try another festive classic: the pantomime. This time, get swept away on a magic carpet in the Copenhagen Theatre Circle’s Aladdin and his Wonderful Lamp. Log Lady and Bob Crazy: it was always difficult deciding who needed locking up the most

The Log Lady Cafe Studiestræde 27, Cph K; open MonFri 12:00-23:30 Sat 14:00-23:00; 2627 9362 TUCKED away in an inconspicuous spot on Studiestræde, there’s a metaphorical slice of North American pie that many a TV aficionado would love to taste. Standing out among many late-serving cafe-bars with a cool but cosy vibe, The Log Lady is primarily a love song to the prematurely cancelled, early-1990s TV show Twin Peaks.

Despite running for just two seasons (and one movie), the series transformed the face of television forever, paving the way for much of the darker and stranger programming we enjoy today. It’s hard to imagine there being a Lost, The Sopranos or even The Killing without Twin Peaks. For a moment, it seemed the entire world was asking: “Who killed Laura Palmer?” Like few shows before, Twin Peaks captured the heart and imaginations of a generation, including those of myself and the owner of the Log Lady Cafe, Henriette Hartmann.

“For me it all started when I used to spend every summer with my grandmother in Sweden,” she recalls. “I clearly remember our conversation about this exciting new American series called Twin Peaks. I’m sure

my gran had little idea about the content of the show. It turned out to be pretty scary and I was actually way too young to see it.

My grandmother’s house was in some dark woods too, so the whole experience was a little overwhelming, but neither of us could stop watching. We were hooked. I still am.

A Twin Peaks-themed bar seemed like the natural expression of that.”

To Hartmann’s credit, this relatively small bar is less like a fan-made mecca and more an extension of the show’s atmosphere. It’s not crammed with memorabilia or signed photographs, rather it’s more the sort of location you might actually happen across in David Lynch’s fictional town: a neon sign flickers in the window, most of the furniture is wooden and there’s the occasional piece of taxidermy. Certain wall coverings are Native American and there are actual logs placed here and there. One blatant reference to the series is a small walkway that connects the main room and the small cosy to the toilets: its red-curtained walls and black & white zig-zag floor is directly inspired by an iconic dream-space called the Black Lodge that many viewers will be familiar with. This overall restraint reflects the good taste of Hartmann, earning her kudos from fans without scaring away potential non-Peaks punters. It seems

that while many customers are fans, or at least aware of the references, there are some who are totally oblivious.

Beyond the various nods to Twin Peaks, The Log Lady doubles as a relaxing coffee break (of the damn fine variety) during the afternoon and wine/spirits bar during the evening, hosting DJs and other small-scale performances. While the beer selection is small, the brands are interesting and well-chosen.

The final allusion to the TV show is of course the name of the bar - The Log Lady is one of its most recognisable and beloved characters who, after losing her husband, finds solace in conversing with a mystical log which she cradles like a child, taking it everywhere. Hartmann explains her attraction to the character: “The Log Lady would say things that seemed crazy at first, but her log connected her to a greater understanding of things. She had a small role, but her presence was always felt, even when she was absent. She was pivotal to everything going on in the town.”

Likewise, for a growing number of Copenhageners, this bar is pivotal to their evenings out. If you’re going to the Twin Peaks-themed evening at Vega on Thursday, here’s your best start to the evening.

THE LONG-STANDING monopoly of turkey at Christmas is slowly being dissolved back in Britain. Once a given for lunch on the 25th and then in bubble and squeak, pies, curries and casseroles for days after, the festive bird is being more and more overlooked these days in favour of more succulent, tasty duck or goose – even pork’s making a resurgence, and that’s saying something!

But like most foods with a bad reputation, the turkey has just suffered from either being cooked in the wrong way or not being used creatively enough. Why do we do such wonderfully versatile things with chicken, but only eat its plumper cousin once a year? The answer is probably its hard-wired

association with Xmas, just like many still shudder at the thought of tapioca due to their school dinner memories.

The truth is that turkey can in fact taste very nice indeed. It does roast nicely under the right conditions, but the simplest way to make it nicer is to make it smaller – or increase its surface area.

Below is a dish that could either take the place of a roast on Christmas Day, or be made with leftovers if you have enough for big slices. It would score highly at a pre-Christmas dinner party. Best of all though, this is for the other 364 ¼ days which, if the turkey were alive, would count because the animal would be for life and not just for Christmas.

So much more than another stock standard Copenhagen sushi place, it offers a delicious range of snacks, salads, small dishes, sushi, meats from the grill, Yakitori (skewered meats), tempura, sashimi, and, of course, a range of sweets.

Its Scallop Katafi is the best in the city, while the Yakitori left us speechless – it was divine. Reasonably priced, impeccably chic and unbelievably tasty, this is the place to go if you want to be a hero amongst the trendsetters.

Turkey breast stuffed with chorizo and wrapped in bacon Serves 2

100g chorizo 1 small onion Handful of cherry tomatoes (5-6) Black pepper 6 streaks of non-smoky bacon START BY preheating the oven to 200 °C. Chop chorizo and tomatoes into small bits and finely dice the onion.

Fry chorizo and onion in pan (no need for oil because of the chorizo fat) and add tomatoes after a few minutes.

Take your turkey breasts and either place it in the middle of two small sheets of cling film, using a rolling pin flatten the breast out by gently hitting the meat. You want to stop when the

Put half of your chorizo mixture on each flattened piece of turkey. If you think there might be too much, leave some aside and serve it with at the end.

Roll the breasts up around the filling and press the joins in with your fingers.

Roll the bacon around each steak. Leave the meat on the side where the rashers join while you heat oil in a pan.

And then add them to the pan in the same position (very important as it seals where the bacon overlaps), and fry the steaks in red hot oil for a few minutes on each side.

Transfer onto a baking tray and place it into the oven for 20 minutes, turning halfway through.

Serve it with vegetables, cranberry and bread sauce.

TO CALL Nordic Noodle a restaurant is a stretch. Seating no more than 14 on a good day, this new addition to Nørrebrogade is more hipster hole-in-the-wall than formal sit-down restaurant.

With a large logo that comprises a fork and a chopstick intersecting on a clock dial, one may be inclined to think that Nordic Noodle is advertising it offers a wide range of dining utensils. And whilst it does, its logo is actually saying much more about its concept.

Combining the inspiration of Asian wok fried food and Nordic Danish vegetables like cabbage and carrots, Nordic Noodle is a fusion of these two distinct cultures. Offering quick, healthy, tasty and, above all, super affordable food is this place’s draw card.

Paying tribute to its cultural backbone, the interior is a melting pot of two cultures. From the outside it’s easy to miss due to its minimalist signage amongst the plethora that crowds Nørrebrogade.

Once inside, despite its signature Scandinavian approach to design (think stark minimalism), the raw boards and exposed brick décor provide a welcoming hip and rustic atmosphere. The tiny tables are exposed split-tree trunks, while the open kitchen will warm patrons even on the coldest of days, as they watch their meals being prepared over the open fire.

There are not many places where you can enjoy a healthy and fresh meal for the same cost as a pizza or kebab, but this is where Nordic Noodle is making its mark.

Explaining the concept themselves, they said: “We want to give our customers a fast, healthy and individual dining experience. Our three-step menu gives you the freedom of putting together an individualised meal to either enjoy it in the restaurant or as a takeaway.”

The menu is so stupidly simple that one almost wonders why the concept hasn’t really caught on before. You begin by choosing your base, before adding optional ingredients, and end by picking a sauce − simple as that.

There are three basics to choose from − rice noodles, egg noodles, or wholegrain rice − and all three come standard with fresh cabbages, carrots, bean sprouts, eggs, and topped with fresh herbs. Tasty enough to be enjoyed on their own (you’d need a sauce though), we felt like treating ourselves, and accordingly added some optional ingredients.

For protein, there is the option of chicken, beef or tiger prawns. For vegetarians or those just looking to try and get

After no more than a 15-minute wait, our amazing smelling dishes were in front of us. Quick cooking at high temperatures retains the natural colour, vitamins, and nutrients, while fresh Nordic ingredients and a little oil are key to serving a fast and healthy meal. As we tucked into our dishes, all I could really think was: God damn, were they good.

Not usually a fan of taking the lord’s name in vain, there really is no other way to describe how tasty the food is. The noodles and meat melted in the mouth. The tiger prawns were a particular stand-out for their size and juicy texture. All in all, every mouthful was a true taste sensation.

With queues a common thing at Nordic Noodle, you may just be inclined to go for a pizza instead, but don’t! This place really is fantastic, as is the relationship between price and quality.

End of Watch (15) Dir: David Ayer; US action/thriller, 2012, 109 mins; Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena, Anna Kendrick, Natalie Martinez, America Ferrera Premiered November 29 Playing Nationwide

I

T WOULD seem writer/director David Ayer is a one-trick horse who solely specialises in depicting Los Angelenos who straddle the line between law and criminality.

Training Day (2001) and Street Kings (2008), which he scripted and directed respectively, as well as many films he has co-written – The Fast and the Furious, Dark Blue, S.W.A.T. – all feature at least one member of LA’s finest who is either on the take or flirting with the dark side, while the unstable lead of Ayer’s directorial debut Harsh Times (2005) can’t decide whether to join the LAPD, work for Homeland Security or become a drug dealer. It would seem that Ayer affords his protagonists the luxury of considering a dizzying array of options while he himself is sadly loath to.

So when, at the beginning of Ayer’s latest feature, officer Brian Taylor (Gyllenhaal) is heard in voiceover declaring: “We stand together, a thin blue line, protecting the prey from the predators, the good from the bad,” viewers may be forgiven for expecting these sanctimonious words to foreshadow a rather blurred morality, yet this is not the case. Ayer’s trademark raw authenticity has here been supplanted for a far more palatable commodity − the appearance of raw authenticity, a superficial sheen that lends itself well to gentle story arcs, appeasing familial bliss and a melodramatic climax. As Taylor and his partner Mike Zavala (Pena) patrol the streets of South Central, they adhere to a strict routine of good cop/great

cop, rescuing children from burning buildings, fighting crime and bleeding for the cause. Meanwhile, as though to underline the film’s ethical certitudes, Ayer provides a counterbalance in the form of a Mexican street gang led by a man known only as Big Evil.

The film’s racial politics are thankfully a little more opaque than its morality, and much of the mocking brotherly banter between Taylor and Hispanic Zavala is dedicated to highlighting their ethnic and cultural differences, while the crimes they investigate trace a demographic shift

from black American to Mexican dominance. None of this is subtle – black gangster Mr Tre is in the middle of complaining that local chicken shops have been overtaken by taco stands and that “it’s going to be extinct niggers pretty soon,” when an expressly territory-marking drive-by shooting interrupts him, conducted

by Big Evil’s gang as though in direct response to Mr Tre’s pronouncements.

Ayer apparently felt the need to paint us a picture.

Still, a certain balance is maintained, albeit contrived – if the deleterious impact of Hispanic gangs and

– was no doubt intended to infuse End of Watch with a gritty, groundlevel realism, but it is undermined by the jarring melding of this footage with other, entirely non-diegetic shots (often confusingly filmed in the same visceral handheld style). Viewers attempting to determine who’s filming what at any given moment will quickly discover that the authenticity normally associated with this cinematic method yields a messier kind of postmodernism which in no way serves – let alone protects – an otherwise over-simplified story of good versus evil.

Accordingly, the film offers a dialectic between exclusion and integration, order and underworld, which strives to be even-handed while being absurdly broad in its delineation.

S ONE of the finest British actors of his generation, Paddy Considine’s directorial debut Tyrannosaur proves that he has the potential to be a masterful filmmaker as well.

Set in the drab pastures of Leeds, we first meet our antihero Joseph (Mullan) after he is thrown out of a betting shop.

Drunk, disorderly and in a fit of

rage, he kicks his dog to death.

It’s a devastating opening scene, illustrating not only how the now companionless widower is a tormented soul, but also just how dark and distressing the following ninety minutes of Tyrannosaur will be.

Running away from another crime scene, he stumbles into a charity shop only to be greeted by an affluent woman of God, Hannah (Colman). Initially afraid, she consoles Joseph and, after a few heated exchanges, they strike up an unlikely kinship, sheltering them from their harsh living situations outside. For Joseph, it’s from his martyrdom and loneliness; and for Hannah, her turbulent marriage with an abusive and

degrading husband (Marsan).

Famous for his many acting roles in Shane Meadows’ films (Dead Man’s Shoes, A Room For Romeo Brass), Considine expresses the same level of austerity in his own filmmaking. Rather than presenting a highly stylised portrait of underclass Britain, he focuses on characterisation and performance, managing to reveal three of the best performances this reviewer has seen all year. Peter Mullan (Trainspotting, Warhorse) is both enchanting and sympathetic as the hapless Joseph, whilst Eddie Marsan (Happy Go Lucky, Sherlock Holmes) invokes terror whenever his gleaming eyes and insincere grin fill the screen. Best of all, Olivia Colman (the unsung

star of British comedy series Peep Show) is finally given the breakout role she deserves as Hannah.

Fragile and sympathetic, she is the beacon of light amongst the darkness, leading to an inevitably devastating closing scene.

Tyrannosaur continues the social realism trend set out by the politically conscious Ken Loach and the wryly-comical Mike Leigh. It’s a story of disconnected people looking for humanity. One of the best British kitchen sink dramas of recent years, it might be relentlessly miserable, but Tyrannosaur suggests that Considine has a bright future ahead.

spired by your music to start a revolution against a racist oppressive regime. That’s at least what happened in the case of US ‘70s rocker Rodriguez, who was a hero to many during the South African struggle against apartheid. Swedish filmmaker Bendjelloul follows two South African fans as they try to find out what happened to their hero, and the result is as compelling as a real-life detective story. LL

Avoid like the Plague The Possession (15) Dir: Ole Bornedal; US horror, 2012, 92 mins; Natasha Calis, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick The only twist in an otherwise by-the-book exorcism plot is that instead of a Christian demon, this is a Jewish one. This forgettable flick does a decent job at maintaining a feeling of dread throughout, but that’s mostly because the audience can’t wait for it to be over. ED

Ted (15) Dir: Seth MacFarlane; US comedy, 2012, 106 mins; Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlane A tale of Peter Pan-esque protracted male adolescence and ‘broversus-ho’ ethics, this is a film that squarely relies on the comic potential of random flotsam and jetsam pop culture, tongue-in-cheek offensiveness and state-of-the-art foul-mouthed puppet humour. As with much of MacFarlane’s work, it is devoid of any trace of sophistication or finesse, and is fitfully amusing thanks only to the occa-

sional deadpan shock-value jokes offered by Mark Wahlberg’s crooked straight-man performance. AS

Now they’re both back, but this time with frenetic fight scenes that appear to be stolen straight out of Die Hard, and even more screen time for Grace. Skip it. LL

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (11) Dir: Bill Condon; US fantasy, 2012, 119 mins; Kristin Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Dakota Fanning, Ashley Greene, Nikki Reed, Michael Sheen The enormously lucrative franchise that is The Twilight Saga finally comes to an end. And thank god for that. As we’ve come to expect from the last four films, Part 2’s soap-operaesque script, lacklustre direction and mind-numbing melodrama are the film’s biggest problems.

But perhaps the scariest part of all comes with the introduction of some new characters, which leaves the door open for potential spin-offs. Now there’s a scary thought. LR

The film raises faint hope and humour during the counselling session scenes, but the therapist Bernie Feld (Carell) unfortunately then sends the couple out on intimacy exercises, shudder-worthy attempts at vulgar comedy. Short on laughs and drama alike, Hope Springs reduces Kay and Arnold’s reconciliation efforts to 100 minutes of bickering, crying, and attempts at intimacy. LR

Dir: Ben Affleck; US thriller, 2012, 120 mins; Ben Affleck, John Goodman, Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin, Clea Duvall, Tate Donovan, Victor Garber While Affleck has gone to some lengths to deliver a restrained and tasteful film, the script itself is determined to show off, with the climax taking every opportunity to ratchet up the drama quite shamelessly. It might make for highly entertaining cinema, but falls short in convincing us of the narrative’s authenticity. For a film about disguise, this film masquerades as one belonging to the dangerous fringes of political filmmaking, but reveals itself to be quite mainstream and, like Affleck himself, a little more ordinary that it really should be. The Imposter (15) Dir: Bart Layton; UK doc, 2012, 94 mins; Frederic Bourdin, Carey Gibson, Beverly Dollarhide, Charlie Parker Despite a promising premise for an intriguing documentary about a French man trying to convince a Texas family that he is their missing son, there is a level of over-stylisation that irks. We are drowned in gratuitous pseudo-tension and filmic technique, which ultimately serve only to detract from the genuine craft involved in documenting this complex and fascinating story. DS

Moonrise Kingdom (7) Dir: Wes Anderson; US comedy, 2012, 94 mins; Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances MacDormand, Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Jared Gilman, Katy Howard This newest feature film from debonair filmmaker Anderson has a brilliant cast, a wry script and stunning cinematography.

It’s fashionable entertainment, and will no doubt please Anderson’s considerable fan-base. But under all the bells and whistles, is it just another coming-of-age, feel-good romcom – even a faintly insincere one at that? MW

YOU CAN picture K5 in negotiations for new series Missing (56 on Metacritic) and Perception (Sun 20:00, 52): “Okay, it’s a choice between Breaking Bad and this tripe.”

The former has 99 on Metacritic for its fifth season, while the other two have bombed. “Fifth season!

And no-one’s taken it – there must be something wrong with it.”

Missing sees a former CIA operative (yawn, men’s crotches beware, we can feel a drinking game coming on) looking for her abducted son (yawn, she failed the child surveillance module) in Europe (yawn, it’s mildly xenophobic). Like most US series, it’s overflowing with Brits. Sean Bean’s at home in anything that involves missing children, while Gina McKee (Our Friends in the North) re-

ally has cornered the sardonic cow market. “Think The French Connection meets Alias with a big helping of Taylor Lautner’s Abduction,” praised the New York Post. Taylor Lautner! Are you trying to praise it or raze it to the ground?

The NYP was less kind to Perception, observing that the “quirkygenius cop genre is getting a bit mouldy around the edges” in a plot that revolves around an eccentric neuroscientist played by a stubbly Eric McCormack (Will & Grace).

So thank god for Kidnapped A Georgian Adventure, this week’s pick. The BBC doc recounts how Robert Louis Stevenson was inspired to write his classic by the story of a 12-year-old sold into slavery in 1728 by a nasty uncle keen to get his hands on the boy’s inheritance.

And even nastier is the subject matter of Saving Face (DR2, Tue 21:30), an Oscar-winning doc that looks at the practice of throwing acid in women’s faces in Pakistan.

Elsewhere, two celebrity chefs will help you pile it on at Christmas: Gordon Ramsay’s Ultimate Christmas (TV3 Puls, Tue & Wed DRK, Wed 20:00 or Thu 18:55 Kidnapped - A Georgian Adventure 20:00) will land you in WeightWatchers while Nigella’s Christmas Kitchen (TV3 Puls, Thu 20:00) will see you celebrate New Year in a coronary care unit; there’s another chance to see Norwegian drama series Lilyhammer (K5, Sun 21:55); while The Desert of Forbidden Art (DRK, Tue 16:00) chronicles one man’s mission to gather 44,000 works of banned Soviet art at an obscure museum in Uzbekistan.
