BEN HAMILTON

MOST OF YOU probably know that Alfred Hitchcock, the subject of this year’s Crazy Christmas Cabaret, Hitchcock-Up! (see G2 for details), made a point of appearing in every one of his films, but did you know that his daughter, Patricia, also appeared in a fair number? Surprised? Not as much as her that she was born, given that her father had a phobia of small children. And eggs, as it happens. Which initially sounds unrelated, but might explain why Daddy helped to fertilise Mummy’s just the once. So you could say that Patricia was the sum of her father’s phobias. One of her appearances was in Psycho, a film Hitchcock deliberately made as cheaply as possible, which is presumably why he hired her. But it still managed to slip in a cinematic taboo. No, it wasn’t the shower scene or a man dressing up in women’s clothing, but rather bizarrely the sight of a toilet being flushed, which had only been seen in animation before (err … Dumpo, Peter Bed Pan, the Aristocraps or Mary Poopins –

do I get the job now, Vivienne?). Well, it’s too late, Hamilton. Mrs McKee finished writing this year’s Crazy Christmas Cabaret months ago, and really, her timing couldn’t be better, with Hitchcock starring Anthony Hopkins out in the US (Feb 23 in Denmark) and the HBO/BBC miniseries, The Girl, about the life of Tippi Hedren, on the way after screening in the States last month. Yeah, now we all love him, unlike when he was alive. The Academy snubbed him repeatedly for an Oscar, and while the English queen eventually knighted him, it was only a couple of months before he died. Elsewhere, it’s a quiet week, but Hitchcock probably would have been inspired by it. We can see him spying on the voyeurs on Istedgade (this week’s Select Shopping, G9) or visiting Bogforum (see G3) for some source material for his next movie, although as a gentleman who prefers blondes, the fiery senoritas at the Latin Festival (see G9) won’t be his cup of tea. But you never know, the master of suspense liked the curveball – he might have even attended the Viking Cats’ ‘Little Mermaid’ Cat Show (see G8), even if was just to wow us with one last surprise appearance when we were least expecting it to prove there’s life in the old dog yet.

Glassalen in Tivoli, Vesterbrogade 3, Cph V; starts Tue, ends Jan 12, performances Mon-Sat 19:30, Sat 15:00; tickets 100- 370kr, www.teaterbilleter.dk; www.londontoast.dk FOR THE 15TH year in a row, The London Toast Theatre is shacking up at the Tivoli Glassalen theatre throughout the wintry months to bring their timehonoured Crazy Christmas Cabaret to the Danish public. And this year, to celebrate 30 years of the CCC, the master of suspense is being reinvented by the mistress of suspenders, as writer, director and leading lady Vivienne McKee tackles the genius (and eccentricities) of legendary director Alfred Hitchcock in this year’s production of Hitchcock-Up! Following last year’s Below the (equatorial) Belt, which was hot with environmental satire, and the preceding Oh My Goth at the height of Twilight mania, the choice to tackle Hitchcock in 2012 was, for McKee, a simple one. “Each year I write the show about issues that are relevant to the public,” McKee told InOut. “And Hitchcock, being a master filmmaker, is as influential today as he was when he was alive. Just look at the Danish film and TV industry, with series like The Killing and Borgen being such huge successes both in Denmark and abroad. They have that Danish Noir quality that is undoubtedly Hitchcockian.” Arguably the father of the psychological horror genre, Hitchcock boasts a whopping 67 titles to his name, with sequels, remakes and reinterpretations of his work constantly in production, some better than others of course, including Disturbia, DJ Caruso’s 2007 take on Rear Window (better) and Gus Van Sant’s 1998 stab at Psycho with a kinky Vince Vaughn as Norman Bates (others). This year there was Hitchcock, a star-studded biopic with Anthony Hopkins in the title role, and HBO miniseries The Girl, which saw Sienna Miller playing Tippi Hedren and Toby Jones as Hitchcock during the tumultuous filming of The Birds. Additionally, Vertigo was recently voted the Greatest Film of All Time by the British Film Institute, a title previously held by Citizen Kane for five whole decades. In the plot of this year’s Crazy Christmas Cabaret, ‘Vivienne’ (McKee obviously) decides she’s had enough of the traditional triple C production and opts instead to adapt a long-lost Hitchcock script she

Performance Madame Butterfly

Store Scene, Operaen, Ekvipagemestervej 10, 1438 Cph K; ends Dec 4, performances at 20:00 (unless stated) on Fri (19:30), Sun (15:00), Tue; tickets 125-895kr; in Italian with Danish subtitles; duration 160 minutes including intermission; www.kgl-teater.dk Wow. Isn’t Copenhagen lucky?! Madame Butterfly, one of the best loved operas of all time, is being staged in this city for the second year in a row. This is pretty much the most visually beautiful opera you can witness – but that’s only if you’re able to see anything through the countless tears you’re sure to be shedding. Yes, Puccini’s opera contains everything: love, betrayal and suicide. It’s certainly not for the faint-hearted. VS

Surely the birds aren’t critics, unless of course they’ve taken exeception to Vivienne’s pastel yellow

finds in an abandoned brasserie of a Hollywood studio. Her troupe of actors are none too fond of the idea, feeling that ‘The Psycho Birds who flew too much’ sounds like the recipe for a flying cock-up. They vow to dispense of Vivienne as soon as possible. “So many people have asked me how I plan to show the filming of a Hitchcock movie on stage,” says McKee. “And it has been a real challenge! We’ve integrated these huge LED screens that we’ve never used before, and they are in addition to the regular sets, props and costume changes that we usually do. As actors we’re used to just getting up and doing our routine, but now there’s a whole new dimension that’s being introduced.” But die-hard CCC fans, do not despair! For McKee’s crazy brand of Danglish humour hasn’t flown the coop just yet. The core of the show− with its political satire, music, dance and annually recurring jokes – hasn’t changed. “I write for the Danish public and, having lived in Denmark for so long, I know what Danish people find amusing. We’ve been doing the show for 30 years, and really it’s got a cult following that sees the same people coming every year. It’s important for me that they recognise the

show’s characteristic components, but that each year we bring something new and innovative for them to enjoy.” McKee’s personal Hitchcock favourite, Rebecca, is an almost obscure title behind such famous works like The Birds, Psycho, Marnie and The 39 Steps. Though it’s not a main component in this year’s HitchcockUp!, McKee has made sure that each of Hitchcock’s titles is given a shout-out in the production. “All the titles are somehow mentioned and incorporated into our show … though some are more subtle than others. I’d forgotten to include The Man Who Knew Too Much, so the other day I had to go back and do a little re-write,” McKee admits only a week before opening night. “A show like this is always changing; we have to mould it after the audience as well − their reactions can be so different than expected!” It’s difficult to say what the audience should expect from the Crazy Christmas crew this year, with murder and suspense being added to the menu. It will, however, undoubtedly deliver a bombastic, hilarious show that will please both newcomer and veteran fans alike.

Ian Burns of That Theatre Company has joined forces with Sue HansenStyles and Angela Heath-Larsen of Why Not Theatre Company to present Old Times, an erotic and hauntingly surreal play that explores the unstable nature of memory. A married couple’s rural tranquillity is interrupted when an old friend of the wife’s shows up for a visit. The drama that ensues, according to director Barry McKenna, is worthy of a Greek tragedy. Although the financial crisis has severely affected the publishing industry, the organisers that gave birth to this event are still confident in its visibility and its success, offering 157 publishing house stalls, where you can meet authors, listen to readings, get involved in discussions and take part in workshops (for all ages) − some of which are available in English. Particular attention this year is devoted to the rapidly growing digital book market, giving visitors the chance to experience the latest devices. The story centres around a love triangle involving a young British lieutenant, his well-to-do bride and the bayadère, a ‘temple dancer’. Follett will be at hand to talk about the accuracy of the historical and topographical research, his linear and balanced writing style, and how he strives to catch the reader’s attention by accelerating the narrative rhythm to leave them breathless. he age of dance music and internet pop sensations like Gangnam Style might be upon us, but the swinging ‘60s are still very much alive and kicking 50 years on. More importantly, if you’re nostalgic for the electrifying screams of Townshend’s guitar, the Beatle’s shirt and tie outfit, or even the Kink’s vocal groans, then fear not, for all these things are collectively coming to town, in the form of Thee Attacks. The Aalborg band have been touring the whole of Europe to promote their new album, Dirty Sheets, with the hope that it will match the critical success of their first album, That’s Mister At-

tack to You. Thee Attacks have as a result set the bar very high, but are desperate to break out of the Danish music industry and become an international success. “Here in Denmark you have to look outside of the country to make something of yourself,” vocalist Jannick Juel told arte.tv. “Because even if you’re the biggest in Denmark, you will only reach a maximum audience of five million. And let’s face it, that’s not big enough to make a meaningful career in music.” A self-titled ‘live-garage band’, the four piece outfit (who’ve all taken on ‘Attack’ as stage name surnames) can only be described as a contemporary take on retro rock ‘n’ roll. Try to imagine a cross between the Kinks and the Hives, or the Who and the White Stripes … and only then you will get the idea of the kind of up-tempo music Thee Attacks like to blast at people. But as the band explains, they don’t see themselves as a retro trib-

9 - 15 November 2012

ute band, but more as a group of musicians who are heavily influenced by the culture of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. “It’s not like we just want to be another ‘60s band,” drummer Rune Lundsgaard told TheBeatJuice. “We just love the way they did it back then.” If that isn’t enough to intrigue you, then consider the fact that the Grammy award-winning British producer Liam Watson (who helped create the White Stripes album Elephant) worked on Thee Attacks’ first album in 2010 − a partnership that only came about after Juel decided to make a cheeky phone call to the producer. “I just called up the studio and got a very arrogant Englishman on the line,” Juel explained to Undertoner.dk. “I told him what we were about, and he simply brushed us off by saying he couldn’t be bothered with retro rock. But we convinced him to listen to our demo, and

a few days later we were recording an album with him.” Granted, Thee Attacks have changed slightly since 2010. Back then they were bare-chested, leather trouser-wearing, wannabe rock stars who swung their sweaty hair around in manic fashion. Somewhat like the Who perhaps. But that style’s now been abandoned for the ‘60s British invasion/Paul McCartney look. The hair’s much shorter and the band wear tight white shirts, pointed high heel shoes and very, very skinny jeans. But while their image might have smartened up, their onstage presence hasn’t changed. “The thing about Thee Attacks is that we’re a live band,” Juel told TheBeatJuice. “We of course find it rewarding to create songs and make records, but playing songs live and having a party with a crowd is the most rewarding thing for us.”

Jumping on the retro band wagon is by no means an original concept for pop rock bands, but Thee Attacks’ combination of fuzzy simple chords and relatively standard blues patterns creates a hard type of soft rock. Couple that with catchy lyrics like ‘C’mon c’mon, feed me with your tongue, I’ll chase you if you run,’ and you can see why Thee Attacks would cater well to the retro lovers and 1960s swingers. If you fancied the idea of seeing a younger version of the Who, you’re probably too late, but if you’d like to see a younger version of the Who wearing Beatles 1963-64 outfits, then you’re in luck. Don’t shrug off the chance to witness this confused ‘60s band, because who knows what they’ll end up looking or playing like the next time they’re in town. BJARKE SMITH-MEYER

Big Sean + The Nordic Urban Challenge 2012

Ice Cream Cathedral

CPH Jazzhouse; 23:00; 70kr Gradually climbing the ladder on the Danish music scene, the trio dream up melodic retrosounding tunes tinted with atmospheric electronic quirks that are patently different from that churned out by other emerging acts in Copenhagen. They have already made appearances at some of Copenhagen’s small, underground venues, but this is certainly their biggest gig to date, and it’s from here that things will get interesting, particularly when they are helped along by the unrivalled acoustics at the Jazzhouse, which will deliver the band’s distorted tunes at an optimum level.

Pumpehuset; 20:00; 250kr Just 24, the Californian has become one of the most sought-after rappers in the States, featured on recordings by the likes of Lupe Fiaso, Pharrell, Wiz Khalifa and, of course, Kanye West. Big Sean’s candid freestyling, charisma and ear for neat music production put him on the map from an early age. Releasing his fourth mixtape, Detroit, just a couple of months ago, his music is more relevant than ever and fans will be racing to the net to buy tickets for this one-off gig. Following Big Sean will be an after-party featuring a host of familiar names including Pato, Eaggerstunn, Suger Lyn and Eloq.

Saturday 10

Ibrahim Electric

Loppen; 21:00; 110kr The Danish trio are deserving of the title as one of the country’s most underrated acts. As musical troubadours, they pride themselves on a sound founded on a delicate balance of eastern and western influences, heavy usage of the electric organ and energetic live shows. Eclectic, daring and catchy, the release of what will be their seventh studio album, Isle of Men (2012), will make ripples beyond the jazz circles here in Copenhagen. This will be their first full gig following the record launch a few weeks back.

Sunday 11

Band of Horses

Falconer Salen; 20:00; 350kr (sold out) Formed in Seattle in 2004, Band of Horses made an immediate impression on the country-folk scene with their debut, Everything All The Time, in 2006. Tapping into a raw style of countryfolk shared by other modern musicians such as Frank Fairfield and The Fleet Foxes, they have penned inspired ballads that have gone global as their songwriting skills inch their way to perfection with every album. Tickets this time round have sold out, but given the capacity of Falconer Salen, it’s likely that you’ll be able to chase a couple down through online ticket forums.

Review Dirty Projectors

pr photo

Do not adjust the picture: dirty is good HHHHHH October 31 at Store Vega

I

t was Halloween night when the Dirty Projectors graced Store Vega with their brand of experimental indie rock, but frontman David Longstreth wasn’t in costume. Well, not in a conventional sense, anyway. Instead he jumped around the stage and chatted with the audience, claiming he had come as a “socialite”. “That’s my Halloween costume tonight. Except I’m not really dressed for it; it’s more of a conceptual thing,” he said. It was a good introduction to the track that followed: ‘The Socialites’ from the New York band’s latest offering Swing Lo Magellan. A more obvious Halloween choice, ‘About To Die’, came

The band in their ‘disinterested hipster’ Halloween costumes

later on, and Longstreth engaged the crowd in some light existential banter about life and death. He threw out similar ironic nuggets of humour throughout the set. Between the jokes, there was plenty of music, and with six musicians on stage, it got pretty loud. The bass was a bit high at the beginning, sending a throbbing wave over this reviewer’s skin and ears. That was rectified later on, but the group still managed to send out a massive wall of sound.

One of their quirkier tunes (and that’s saying a lot because Dirty Projectors are inherently quirky), ‘Beautiful Mother’, was particularly intense live. The three female vocalists belted out some gorgeous harmonies and a sort of yodel before yelling a guttural “Aaayyyyyy”. Interspersed with handclaps, this song gave the singers a chance to show off, and the crowd was grateful for it. Finishing off the main part of the show with ‘Useful Chamber’ from their 2009 release Bitte Orca, Dirty Projectors made

good use of strobe lighting and headbanging for an added dose of drama. The lights flashed in time with the guitarists’ power cords, blue lighting coloured the quieter sections, and red lighting was used in the more chaotic parts. The height of chaos came when the singers were wailing so loudly that the sound, though in tune, verged on being downright ugly. Then came the encore and a special surprise. The three female band members came out dressed as Japanese cartoon characters in one-piece animal suits, and the bass player came out in a loincloth. A “pink bear that kills people” (as Longstreth called him) also made an appearance before manning the merchandise desk after the show. Longstreth said that being on a tour bus for a long time tended to incite self-mocking behaviour. But as for the frontman, he was still in his socialite costume. Max Freckleton

Chris Brown

Forum; 20:00; 490-590kr The American hip-hop and R&B star was signed to Jive records when he was just 15 before releasing his self-titled debut in 2004 which made it into the Billboard Top 100. Churning out hit after hit since, Chris Brown’s name has been up there with the likes of Justin Timberlake, Kanye West and another rapper in town this week, Big Sean. The success of his fifth album, Fortune, which was released this summer, means that getting hold of one of the golden tickets at Forum may prove even more difficult. There are still tickets available but it’s strongly advised that you book fast.

Nightlife CPH:DOX The Birthday Party Bremen; Fri 23:30; 50kr Celebrating the tenth year of Denmark’s largest film festival, organisers are putting on a spread at Bremen Theatre. Kitted out with a light show, smoke-machines and champagne flowing behind the bar, the team of DJs will up the ante after midnight when the birthday is official. Be sure to get hold of a ticket sooner rather than later given the enormous popularity of CPH:DOX. Cool Kitsch Vibes Apotek, Ydunsgade 5, Cph N; Sat 19:30; free adm Serving 35kr cocktails that promise to remedy ailments such as writers’ block, boredom, an aching heart and loneliness, this is arguably the most kitsch of all Copenhagen’s venues, and it’s not yet swamped by tourists or the wrong kind of folk. It’s a classy, original and yet cheap beginning for a night out on the town, and although there’s not much of a dancefloor you can always move some shapes on the forecourt.

The Eclectic Moniker

Lille Vega; 21:00; 150kr The creative Copenhagen collective tap into an exotic brand of indie rock − making heavy usage of castanets, steel drums and maracas − and create Vampire Weekend-like grooves, as captured in their hit single, ‘Easter Island’. Touted as one of the city’s most exciting bands, The Eclectic Moniker has a lot of hype surrounding them after memorable shows supporting Oh Land and Kaizers Orchestra last year. The release of their selftitled debut album in the spring received some kind words from the likes of Soundvenue and Gaffa, and this night’s gig will be a blast. Daniel van der Noon Trailerpark Afterparty CPH Skate Park; 20:00; 50kr For the first time, Trailerpark will be throwing a belated afterparty − two months after the closing day of this year’s main festival. Put together by the ArtRebels group − famous in these parts for organising art exhibitions, underground parties and the annual hipster music festival, Trailerpark − they have a massive following here. Holding back on releasing the big names online, the event is attracting a lot of hype - at 50 kroner a pop, it’s a guarantee that by midnight getting in the door may prove impossible.

Album Covers: Vinyl Revival WITH THE exhibition ‘Album covers: vinyl revival’, Designmuseum Danmark is appealing to a broad audience: from young and old with a general interest in culture, to design aficionados and music lovers. Six decades of design WITH A thematic presentation of more than 400 specially selected covers, this is – also in an international context – the first broad manifestation of the six decade design history of the LP cover. The exhibition presents the visual culture of the album cover and its international development within a wide diversity of musical genres, documented with original releases throughout. Beginning with the early illustrated LP covers of over 60 years ago, the exhibition takes us all the way to today’s ongoing vinyl revival. Early beginnings

Vinyl revival

THE MODERN album cover, as we know it today, has its origins in the graphic designer Alex Steinweiss’s illustrated cover for the Rodgers & Hart shellac album, Smash Song Hits, released by Columbia Records in 1940. However, the illustrated cover did not enjoy its real breakthrough until the introduction of the long-playing vinyl record in 1948. That made records more userfriendly: they played for longer and were less fragile. But the introduction of the vinyl record and the larger format also marked the beginning of decades of lavishly illustrated, experimental, artistic and varied covers that put a face on the music and provided the interface, and added appeal, when the product met the consumer in the record stores.

PARALLEL with the digital development, there has been growing interest in the aesthetics and cultural history of the record cover in recent years, across the age groups. From 2006 to 2010, sales figures for LPs have grown explosively. Vinyl records still only make up a small fraction of the music market, but it is the only physical music medium that is experiencing growth. Currently, there is considerable interest in the golden days of the rock album cover, and young artists, musicians and graphic designers are creating new graphic examples of high-quality modern cover design. A characteristic of the rock cover is that it reflects a time of great musical diversity: an era when

anything was possible, and the graphic LP cover format underwent a renaissance with rock and rock imagery as the major exponents. OVER THE past decade, Latin American dance culture has taken Denmark by storm. Whether it be the salsa, samba or tango, it’d be hard to find even the smallest of towns that hasn’t been touched by this growing craze. But as this exotic culture’s influence continues to grow in Denmark, there are still some who believe that with it should come education and information. One such person is Cuban Culture Club project manager, and Copenhagen Latin Festival organiser, Stine Ortvad. “The reason for this festival is a desire to promote intercultural understanding and integration, and to provide residents of different ethnic backgrounds, as well as artists of different nationalities, the opportunity to be inspired by each other’s art,” Ortvald explained to InOut. Now in its ninth year, the Copenhagen Latin Festival aims to inspire all visitors with the rhythmic energy and inherent power in Latin American music and dance. Ortvald believes the festival is a great opportunity for all resident Latinos to take a greater part in their own culture and practice their music and dance, all the while benefiting Danish society. “There is a need for an event that can give a true and realistic picture of Latin American culture, and for a festival that can inform and affect young and old, creating greater intercultural understanding,” she said. Opening their doors once again in November, there’s never been a better time to get down and dirty while feeling the world through music and dance. As they say in Spanish: ‘¡La fiesta comienza!’

Water – a world of adventures Experimentarium, Tuborg Havnevej 7, Hellerup; ends Dec 31, open Mon-Fri 09:30-17:00, Tue 09:30-21:00, Sat and Sun 11:00-17:00; under 2s free, age 3-11 105kr, adult 160kr, students 105kr; contact 3927 3333 or info@experimentarium.dk This water adventure features more than 50 activities and experiments. But don’t be afraid of getting your clothes wet – unless you ask for it – as this is a “bone-dry ride through the wet element”. You get to fight the power of the sea, save someone who has fallen overboard from a ship and experience giant surf waves. This is an event for the entire family with a chance to learn more about water safety in a fun way. MSØ “...until I have walked in his moccasins” Nationalmuseet, Prinsens Palæ, Ny Vestergade 10, Cph K; ends Nov 25, Sun 12:00-15:00, also Oct 14 & Oct 21, 11:00-15:00; www.natmus.dk Bring your children to experience the living history and culture of North American Indians. Will your children be a strong warrior or a beautiful princess? At this workshop they will choose their Indian names, build and decorate their own tepee, listen to ancient myths about nature and learn from them, and make their own jewellery, inspired by the exhibition ‘Powwow’. Don’t miss it! It’s free! MAR

Istedgade Cph V THE MENTIONING of Istedgade is sometimes followed by advice such as “it’s a dodgy place” or simply “I wouldn’t go there”. And to be fair, when you exit Central Station on to Istedgade, you might be met by a drug dealer or two. But if you’re brave enough to venture on, past the graphic displays in the erotic lifestyle stores and the occasional lady of the night, you’ll find yourself in an entirely different world. The other end of Istedgade has been transformed from a gangster’s paradise into a hipster’s one, packed with exotic restaurants, trendy cafes and, most importantly, hip designer stores.

Did we even know what a booty was in the 1980s? It was something a pirate craved, surely?

Opening show Vesterbro Kulturhus, Lyrskovgade 4, 2th, Cph V; Sat 21:00, concert starts 22:30; Tickets 100kr at the door (cash only) For those of us who haven’t quite mastered the tricky steps of salsa and reggaeton, this is a great opportunity to see how the professionals do it. From start to finish, guests will be able to witness warm-up and starter shows before the main concert begins. Following that, anyone and everyone will have a chance to heat up the dancefloor and show off their moves as the DJ belts out hot Latin tunes until the early hours of the morning. It’d be hard to find such an actionpacked night of fun for only 100 kroner, so make sure you get there early to avoid missing out.

Workshops by Roynet Pérez González ElStudio, Fælledvej 19, Cph N; Sat and Sun, various times; Price per workshop: 150kr (cash only); register at info@elstudio.dk; www.latinfestival.dk One half of the partnership crowned European champions in Cuban salsa in 2010, Roynet Pérez González, will be giving five workshops throughout the Latin Festival, as well as performing on the opening night. Originally from Cuba, but now living in Finland, González has many years experience teaching dance. He used to perform with the famous Cuban reggaeton band Gente De Zona. He will be teaching workshops in many different dances, including rumba, afro, reggaeton, salsa (moves and pardons) and rueda. Each workshop will be 80 minutes in duration. JESSICA O’SULLIVAN

FOOD & DRINK

InOut | THE CPH POST ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE FOOD BLOG BY ELIZABETH DELLAPENNA

SINCE Thanksgiving is the major holiday of November (at least for a Yankee like myself), it seems appropriate to consider a classic recipe usually featured in the holiday’s gluttonous feast. If you like food, specifically with lots of fat and sugar, then you may find Thanksgiving a holiday worth celebrating annually too. The only food item that seems even remotely healthy is the turkey. So this time around, I have decided to focus on the dessert end of the spectrum. Pumpkin pie is easily my favourite pie. Although it’s associated with Thanksgiving, it’s delicious all year round. Pumpkin pie has found its way to a permanent place within

my regular cooking cycle. If you’ve never had it before, you may be surprised to find that pumpkin has a relatively mild flavour. This pie tastes mostly like cinnamon and when you look at the ingredients, it’s not altogether unexpected. Pumpkin pie is best paired with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, although it’s very good by itself. This recipe includes an optional cream topping as a part of the pie. As to the piecrust itself, the recipe I know for making piecrust is surprisingly complicated. Instead, it can be easier to just purchase pie dough from the grocery store and often that is exactly what I do.

Let cool on a wire rack, for one hour, and then refrigerate to cool completely – about another two hours.

Suits its name: never in the field of human consumption etc

This is the dessert that is still giving our reviewer palpitations weeks after the event

In the evening up to 50 guests use a separate, more intimate section of the restaurant. There’s only one sitting, and although I suspect there’s usually a few suits, Jesper says the atmosphere is much less formal, much less rushed and, most importantly, much less corporate. For a business lunch, Grønbech & Churchill is a solid choice, but if you really want to languish in the undoubtedly fine food, knock back some booze, laugh out loud and – God forbid - wear a pair of jeans, an evening booking is recommended.

silky chanterelle mushrooms and spring onions − a clever combination of textures that again elevates simple, seasonal ingredients into gourmet food. The main is a generous and tender breast of mallard, coated in a rich apricot reduction, which we both agree is a far superior take on the classic Canard a l’Orange, but it is the dessert that really wows. Two weeks later and I’m embarrassed to confess I’m still daydreaming about the white chocolate mousse, prune compote, white chocolate and yoghurt sorbet, and perfectly ripe plums crowned with white chocolate disks. It was simply delicious.

TEL AVIV

To start we’re served a take on gazpacho: peeled buffalo and plum tomatoes perched on spring onions, marooned in a pimento and vanilla reduction and adorned with a wafer-thin slice of ‘burnt’ bread. On the side comes a generous wedge of Valencay, a classic goat’s cheese from the Loire Valley. It is beautifully presented and due to the high water content of the tomatoes, the dish has a clean, incredibly refreshing taste. Next comes a rich beefy bouillon served in a teacup, garnished with fresh flowers. Hiding within its depths are pieces of succulent langoustine, raw white mushrooms, cooked

JERUSALEM

SUITS. That’s the first thing we notice when we step into Grønbech & Churchill, the Michelin-starred restaurant opened by Rasmus Grønbech in March last year. To be fair, it’s lunchtime, and through the windows of this corner building loom the alabaster walls and giant starred flag of the Maersk headquarters. By offering a fancy but quick twocourse lunch menu, Grønbech & Churchill has cleverly ensured that it has suits on tap. The building is unremarkable from the outside: a basement with an ever-so-discreet sign that fronts both Amaliegade and Esplanaden. Churchill Parken lies directly opposite, hence the Danish-Anglo name. Inside the decor is classic understated Scandinavian: clean lines, a palette of whites, greys and blacks, elegant glass pendant lights, and candles flickering on the tables and from within Perspex boxes on the window sills. But let the eye roam and you’ll notice numerous injections of modern art: sculptured heads by the celebrated Danish artist Michael Kvium for example, and a crinkly, slightly creepy looking new-born baby nestling on the shelf next to the wine glasses. Everything you see and taste is down to Rasmus Grønbech, the founder, owner and head chef who having worked in numerous kitchens, including that of Prémisse (now AOC), has finally ventured from the wings to stride out onto centre stage. At lunchtime, when guests are seated in the smaller section of the restaurant, you can look through an open arch and see Rasmus and his team obsessively tinkering over dishes on the clinical stainless steel pass. It’s in this section, on a busy Wednesday, that we take out seats, guided by headwaiter Jesper who, as a veteran of The Paul restaurant, has managed to develop a professional, informed yet friendly style. We’re starving. We wait. Then a slab of slate arrives, adorned with a stack of rugbrød, slices of salted sourdough and a generous pot of butter, and the fun begins. Both the lunchtime and the evening menus are divided into two options that change on a monthly basis. The Grønbech menu is a light offering, typically featuring a seafood main, while the Churchill menu, true to its name, is a very robust, heavy affair. In the evening you pay 500 kroner for four courses, with the option of splurging another 500 kroner on the accompanying champagne and wine menu, and at lunch it’s 275 kroner for two courses with optional extras of canapés, cheese and dessert. It’s a smart concept as it keeps the menu manageable for the kitchen while providing two completely contrasting options for guests. “It’s almost always the women who opt for the Grønbech,” says Jesper.

At its best when it defies ‘Body of Lies’ formula MARK WALKER

Operation Argo (15) Dir: Ben Affleck; US thriller, 2012, 120 mins; Ben Affleck, John Goodman, Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin, Clea Duvall, Tate Donovan, Victor Garber Premiered November 7 Playing Nationwide

B

ASED ON a recently declassified CIA case file, Argo is hard to dissmiss as a vanity project for actor/director Ben Affleck since it’s neither a plumb role nor an opportunity to show off in the director’s chair. The film is very much its script: the narrative powers alone leave little room for directorial showboating, its engine drowning out any individual performance or element. Everything from design to camera serves to underpin the script; nothing is superfluous nor distracting. Kudos is at least due to Affleck that he resisted any temptation to showboat, instead presenting us with this: a lean, stripped-down, no-frills political thriller. Affleck plays the protagonist who is unremarkable in appearance: his floppy hair, beardy face and bedraggled suits serve only to further his resemblance to a 1970s geography teacher − or as his character’s job description indicates − an extraction expert. Tony Mendez was, at the time, the CIA’s premier operative for getting in and then getting people out. And that’s precisely the task he’s faced with when in the aftermath of the Iranian revolution of 1979, militants stormed the American Embassy in Tehran, demanding the return of their shah so that he may be tried on Iranian soil. They took the embassy’s staff hostage in the process, but six of those employees managed to escape, finding refuge at the home of the Canadian ambassador. With just one absurd idea to supply the six with bicycles and

Ben Affleck’s performace may be average, but he pulls off a pair of tight jeans better than anyone

road maps rattling around the Pentagon, Affleck’s Mendez leaves the Pentagon for Iran to mastermind a plot to masquerade himself and the six as Canadian nationals working on a Hollywood movie doing a two-day scout for exotic locations suited to their script’s sci-fi setting. Enlisting the help of special FX expert John Chambers (a pitch-perfect performance by John Goodman), Mendez sets about building his cover story, setting up a company and beginning pre-production on his fake movie, ‘Argo’. The film is at times delightfully funny, with all the best lines wisely

going to Goodman − Mendez: “Can someone learn to be a director in just two days?” Chambers: “You could train a rhesus monkey to direct in 24 hours”. Goodman’s natural charm again serves to de-emphaise any focus Affleck might have put on Mendez, and one has to question whether the lack of charisma Affleck affords his character is simply due to Affleck’s own shortcomings. While his film, no doubt consciously, has echoes of Alan Pakula’s political 1976 masterpiece All The President’s Men, Affleck himself suffers from the comparisons, being not as engaging as Redford or as

obvious that while Affleck has gone to some lengths to deliver a restrained and tasteful film, the script itself is determined to show off, with the climax taking every opportunity to ratchet up the drama quite shamelessly. All of which might make for highly entertaining cinema, but falls short in convincing us of the narrative’s authenticity. Ironically for a film about disguise, this film masquerades as one belonging to the dangerous fringes of political filmmaking, whilst revealing itself to be quite mainstream and, like Affleck himself, a little more ordinary that it really should be.

Not living it up in the Hotel Transylvania Hotel Transylvania (7) Dir: Genndy Tartakovsky; US animation, 2012, 91 mins; Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, David Spade Premiered November 8 Playing at Fisketorvet

T You know Stoker had Sandler in mind when he wrote Dracula

electric as Hoffman. Just as well then, that he directs his film with great energy and assurance, as a firm and confident hand guided by the schools of Michael Mann or Martin Scorcese. Ultimately though, while everything is admirably geared toward the service of the script, the film is brought down by its script’s readiness to succumb to Hollywood clichés. What initially promises to be a rich and complex political thriller gets boiled down to its bare essentials, leaving us with one too many pulsequickening ‘shall I cut blue wire or the red wire’ type scenarios. It becomes

HINK Ice Age on acid, or Shrek on speed. Hotel Transylvania adopts the tolerable idea from Shrek of bringing together a dazzling host of ‘usual suspects’ – from fairy tale, mythical and Gothic genres – to create something new out of something familiar. But unlike the good-natured ogre’s franchise, this whimsical ensemble flick achieves only

a flabby lack of direction. Whatever metaphorical image I could have picked to open this review, I’d have had to emphasise the inescapable feeling of incredulous idiocy. True, the dreary slapstick and cringe-inducing bodily-function jokes appear to be the film’s proud raison d’etre, but I suspect at times it’ll freak out rather than amuse the little ones. The shticks are done with so little heart, brain and theatrical flair that you wonder whether the screenwriter is actually a zombie (or just stoned). The story almost looks good on paper. Dracula’s (Sandler) adolescent daughter Mavis (Gomez) is approaching her 118th birthday and the proud father has in-

vited a crowd of the world’s most notorious monsters: Frankenstein (voiced by regular Sandler co-star Kevin James, King of Queens), his wife (nasal Fran Drescher, The Nanny), the Invisible Man (Spade), the Mummy (CeeLo Green), Quasimodo (Jon Lovitz), a family of werewolves (led by the brilliant Steve Buscemi from Boardwalk Empire) and a slew of sundry witches and skeletons. Mavis, who in human years is now 18, dreams of leaving the hotel she calls home in order to meet the other half, the humans, whose barbarism all monsters dread. (Kids will hopefully appreciate the reverse irony). There’s another kind of ‘other’ she finds interesting: boys. As fate would

have it, a typical 21-year-old human backpacker, Jonathan (Samberg), loses his way in the woods and finds the barely concealed hotel. Dracula gets busy telling everyone Jonathan is a monster too (to avoid mass panic) and trying to keep him away from Mavis. Predictably, a Romeo and Juliet angle develops, but tragedy dies at the hands of ham-fisted jokes, tired clichés and several disco-musical scenes that never get off the ground. All in all, Hotel Transylvania is a singularly tepid and dull affair offering nothing to grown-ups. Go and see the excellent A Cat in Paris instead. KASPER R GULDBERG

Looper (15)

Dir: Alex Kurtzman; US comedy/ drama, 2012, 114 mins; Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks, Michael Hall D’Addario, Michelle Pfeiffer, Olivia Wilde, Mark Duplass Despite a vulnerable and nuanced performance from Banks, this film can’t shake the weepy sentimentality that hangs over so much of the plot. Plus, the brother-sister flirting is just creepy. LL

Dir: Rian Johnson; US action/ drama, 2012, 118 mins; Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Piper Perabo, Jeff Daniels If there’s a film to finally propel sci-fi into industry respectability it should be this one. With luminous performances from both Gordon-Levitt and Blunt, this is some of the most confident, well thought-out drama this side of an Oscar. A classic is born. MW

Book Your Tickets Your Sister’s Sister (4) Dir: Lynn Shelton; US drama/ comedy, 2011, 70 mins; Emily Blunt, Rosemary DeWitt, Mark Duplass Amazing how watching three likeable people sipping wine in a cabin can feel like watching a train crash. This relatable and brilliantly engaging indie dramedy has the raw emotion, fun and embarrassing moments needed to achieve the perfect blend of comedy, anguish and new perspective. KRG

Skyfall (11) Dir: Sam Mendes; UK/US action/thriller, 2012, 143 mins; Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw, Bérénice Marlohe Forget the latter Brosnan follies, the much maligned Quantum of Solace and even fan-favorite Casino Royale because, for the first time in nearly two decades, nobody is doing it better. MW

Searching for Sugar Man (15) Dir: Malik Bendjelloul; Swe/ US/SA doc, 2012, 86 mins If you disappear into obscurity after an undistinguished music career, you can always take pride in the fact that halfway across the world a nation is being inspired by your music to start a revolution against a racist oppressive regime. That’s at least what happened in the case of US ‘70s rocker Rodriguez, who was a hero to many during the South African struggle against apartheid. Swedish filmmaker Bendjelloul follows two South African fans as they try to find out what happened to their hero, and the result is as compelling as a real-life detective story. LL

Avoid like the Plague Paranormal Activity 4 (15) Dir: Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman; US thril/hor, 2012, 88 mins; Katie Feath-

erston, Kathryn Newton, Matt Shively, Brady Allen The first one was scary in spite of some horrible acting, the second was just horrible and the third went completely unnoticed. The fact that the money-grubbing studios have decided to give out a fourth one is just embarrassing. LL

Taken 2 (15) Dir: Olivier Megaton; US action, 2012, 95 mins; Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen, Leland Orser The first film was a guilty pleasure that worked only for Neeson’s fast-paced and high-octane action sequences, and in spite of a mind-numbingly dreadful performance from Maggie Grace. Now they’re both back, but this time with frenetic fight scenes that appear to be stolen straight out of Die Hard, and even more screen time for Grace. Skip it. LL

Ted (15) Dir: Seth MacFarlane; US comedy, 2012, 106 mins; Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlane A tale of Peter Pan-esque protracted male adolescence and ‘broversus-ho’ ethics, this is a film that squarely relies on the comic potential of random flotsam and jetsam pop culture, tongue-in-cheek offensiveness and state-of-the-art foul-mouthed puppet humour. As with much of MacFarlane’s work, it is devoid of any trace of sophistication or finesse, and is fitfully amusing thanks only to the occasional deadpan shock-value jokes offered by Mark Wahlberg’s crooked straight-man performance. AS

Also Playing Keep the Lights On (15) Dir: Ira Sachs; US drama, 2012, 101 mins; Thue Lindhart, Zachary Booth, Marilyn Neimark, Paprika Steen Lindhart gives a solid performance in his first dramatic English-speaking lead role, but an overly ambitious story and a meandering latter third keep this film from reaching its full potential. MW

Sinister (15) Dir: Scott Derrickson; US horror, 2012, 110 mins; Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onoofrio, Michael Hall D’Addario, Juliet Rylance What Sinister lacks in innovation it makes up for in jump-inducing frights and gruesome imagery. This flick will definitely please horror fans but might not be the thing for the squeamish. LL

The Imposter (15) Dir: Bart Layton; UK doc, 2012, 94 mins; Frederic Bourdin, Carey Gibson, Beverly Dollarhide, Charlie Parker Despite a promising premise for an intriguing documentary about a French man trying to convince a Texas family that he is their missing son, there is a level of over-stylisation that irks. We are drowned in gratuitous pseudo-tension and filmic technique, which ultimately serve only to detract

G19

from the genuine craft involved in documenting this complex and fascinating story. DS

Lawless (15) Dir: John Hillcoat; US/drama/action, 2012, 116 mins; Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Guy Pearce, Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Mia Wasikowska Hillcoat has delivered an immersive experience, a fully realised world populated by morally complex characters and a stellar cast − including a surprisingly good LaBeouf who puts in the most amiable performance of his career. Despite this though, the heightened on-screen violence isn’t particularly enjoyable or justifiable. The films remains a solidly crafted but cold-blooded affair. MW

On The Road (15) Dir: Walter Salles; US drama, 2012, 137 mins; Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, Kristin Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen The novel portrayed an intoxicatingly fierce personal quest for meaning and belonging in a cold war America full of conflict and contradiction. This adaptation fails to capture this search for a codified new way forward and instead relies on oversimplified sensation, surface angst and fragmented movement from one isolated and unexplored bohemian bubble to another, each of which seems to deflate with the merest of bombastic whines and groans. The Queen of Versailles DR2, Tue 21:00

NORMALLY if somebody misses a major event, you ask them whether they were in Outer Space, but even there you would have been hardpressed to avoid Space Dive: Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner’s record 39km jump on October 14. He became the first human to break the sound barrier outside a vehicle and beat a record that had stood for nearly 50 years. Which isn’t too far off Liverpool’s wait for the English title. It’s been 22 years for a team that had won ten of the previous 17, and they’re only four seasons off equalling the 26 years Manchester United waited between 1967 and 1993. But that’s the least of their problems as their American owners have turn ed them into a reality TV show. Former player Mark Lawrenson has

described Being: Liverpool (TV3+, Sun 17:00) as “American schmalz” and “cringeworthy”. Sounds like a recommendation to me. The same could be said about Sarah Palin, the subject of the multiple Emmy-winning TV drama Game Change (DRHD, Fri 20:00). Julianne Moore and Ed Harris are pitch perfect as the running mates, but you can’t help thinking it’s all a bit one-sided, unless she really is, as Bill Maher suggested, little more than “a Facebook page”. From the mayoress of Alaska to The Queen of Versailles, an amusing reflection on the American dream about a family who build a replica of the French palace, and then watch their empire crumble in the financial crisis. With 95 on Rotten Tomatoes, it is highly recommended.

Elsewhere, this is The Graham Norton Show (BBC Ent, Tue 22:00) episode with WILL.I.AM and Miriam Margolyes; the critics are divided (49 on Metacritic) about Chaos (TV2 Zulu, Sun 11:20), a dramedy series about Feds who break rules; Holly’s heroes (SV2, Sun 17:00) is a new Kiwi kids series DR2, Tue 21:00 The Queen of Versailles about basketball; Monisha Kaltenborn (BBC World, Sun 22:30) meets the female CEO of Formula One team Sauber; Lost Heroes of World War One (SV2, Mon 18:00) is an acclaimed six-episode 2011 series; The Storm That Swept Mexico (DRK, Mon 20:00) looks at the 1910 revolution; and Made in Sheffield (DRK, Sat 23:55) revisits the English city’s punk and post-punk scenes 30 odd years ago.
