I WATCHED Taxi Driver last night: “Someday a real rain will come and wash all this scum off the streets.” Sorry, my mistake, it was CNN. It’s funny. Most people in the office didn’t recognise the name Travis Bickle. It’s an indictment of their generation, and I think it’s a shame because it’s a timeless classic – not something to be avoided because it’s too old. But increasingly, Generation Y are shunning films from the 1970s – maybe it’s a question of how easy they are to download. Besides, back in the office, they were too busy making remarks about The Day After Tomorrow – was that actually called ‘Overmorgen’ in Denmark? No, just checked on IMDB. For once in the history of their language, they had a chance to show off – nee, nee, nee, in Denmark we actually have a word for that (originally from the German for übermorgen) – but they blew it by going for the American version.
It’s funny how natural disasters bring back memories. For some, it will be about idyllic weeks spent in what is very possibly the world’s most alluring city, walking the Brooklyn Bridge and climbing the Empire State, jogging (since the 1990s) or running for your life (the 1970s and 1980s) through Central Park. For others, it will be about the last time they were caught in a hurricane (in 1987, I got caught in one that resulted in the nearby town of Sevenoaks being rechristened ‘Oak’) – Caribbean island holidays booked by your other half(wit) are the most popular location. And for a few, it will be about a childhood hamster called Sandy, who the next door neighbour’s dog ate. We regret, relate to and remember, rather like the subjects of the ongoing Old Times (see G3 for details), which next week will be preceded by an evening in the company of Harry Burton (see G2), a director and actor who made a documentary about his friend, the play’s writer Harold Pinter. And also like the visitors to French Affair at Docken (see G3), which is a chance to recall treasured trips to the cuisine and romance capital of the world, and hotels with really weird pillows – memories infinitely more preferable than Travis Bickle.
After the evening with Harry, those present are invited to watch the battle of wits and memories in Old Times - they do look baffled, don’t they?
An Evening with Harry Burton
Krudttønden, Serridslevvej 2, Cph Ø; Thu (Nov 8) 17:30; tickets 100kr (250kr for both talk and performance of Old Times) IT’S HARD to know what life achievements merit a documentary these days (Mabel and Fatty Viewing the World’s Fair at San Francisco is, believe it or not, a real film), but winning the Nobel Prize for literature, turning down a knighthood, not to mention cranking out over 30 plays and 20 screenplays most definitely makes you a candidate. Harold Pinter, the father of his very own particular brand of absurdist theatre, which came to be known as ‘Pinteresque’, left behind a legacy of domestic dramas and tense silences when he passed away in 2008. His good friend, himself a critically acclaimed British actor and director, Harry Burton, who made the documentary Working with Pinter just a year before Pinter’s death, is coming to Copenhagen for an evening where he will show

his film as well as lead a discussion about Pinter’s work. Ian Burns, the founder and artistic director of That Theatre Company, is delighted to present Harry Burton in accordance with That Theatre Company and Why Not Theatre Company’s production of Old Times (see G3 for details, page 18 of the newspaper for a review, and page 12 for details of another evening featuring Burton), in which he also plays the party of Deeley. “The word ‘genius’ is used far too often in my opinion,” he told InOut. “But Pinter carried the flag that Shakespeare and others held for a while. His plays are also poems, or collections of poems within a framework for a particular play, and as an actor they sit very well on the tip of one’s tongue once you’ve married the imagery to the words … Just like Shakespeare. If it’s done well, the audience see those pictures as they’re being described on stage.” Thursday evening will be a special opportunity to view the film and partake in a

Burns describes the hour-long documentary as “a portrait of Pinter as he sits and watches and comments on actors doing scenes from his plays. What comes across is a man of the theatre who loves and admires actors and the way they work.” Burton, who met Pinter when he was only 18 while the two were playing for the same cricket team, was a close personal friend and professional colleague of Pinter’s. “This closeness allowed him access to one of the world’s greatest wordsmiths, and I think it’s a privilege to be able to get closer to what was a private man,” said Burns. It depicts a world that is in motion – represented in the literal motion of the stage, the scenery and the dancers. The choreography is contorting, the setting is isolatingly apocalyptic and the questions posed are deeply human. Control against subordination, puppeteer against puppet – these innate foils are exposed in what Politiken describes as “an emotional knockout of rare magic”. AS

In this play, she reflects on the seven deadly sins. Set in a circus ring, it follows a circus troupe performing short – and often gruesome yet hilarious – vignettes about the dark side of life and our fallibilities as human beings. It looks at humanity’s raised awareness in sexuality, vulnerability and a knowledge – or naivety – of good and evil. HEN THE travel-weary John Scofield finally took to Det Kongelige Teater stage at midnight this summer during the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, it was not a surprise to see the old theatre nearly empty. Scofield and his band, after all, stuck in Romania most of the day due to flight cancellations, were three hours late. But, at what was a testament to this city’s love of jazz and the great jazz guitarist’s soulfully sensitive playing, an enthusiastic audience embraced him for a delightful and generous show into the wee hours of the morning. “It was cool,” Scofield said in an interview with InOut. “We were so happy
A field day every time he’s here to have made it, and when we got on stage after so much travel, it became a great day playing for a wonderful audience. It seemed like the old days because it used to be that concerts were late starting, with anticipation and a little bit of drama.” It is unlikely there will be any such drama for Scofield’s two-night engagement at the superbly renovated Copenhagen Jazzhouse, but it’s a near certainty that this thoughtful jazz giant − fluent in jazz interpretations ranging from blues and rock to R&B, funk and bop − will deliver another excellent performance. “I love playing in Copenhagen − it’s always been one of the best audi-
ences for me,” Scofield enthused. “I always feel great there. The people really get the music.” Part of Scofield’s success can be attributed to his enthusiastic engagement in his playing and exploration. The 60-year-old American-born musician has been a leader on over 30 diverse albums and played with some of jazz music’s finest names: Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Chet Baker, Ron Carter, Joe Henderson and many others. It never feels as if Scofield is just going through the motions; instead he clearly loves what he does and wants to share it with his listeners. “I try to play to the audience; some
jazz musicians just play to each other,” Scofield said. “I am not changing the music to suit the audience, but projecting it out to the audience. The audience is really, really important, and any musician who says they’re not is either deluded or lying.” Scofield will be joined by a mentor of his, the exceptional bass player Steve Swallow, who is 12 years his senior, and a dynamic drummer, Bill Stewart. Together, as a trio, Scofield explains that they will be sure to listen to one another yet hear themselves, and together the group will set forth on an evening of high-level exploration and improvisation.
“I’ve been dealing with this language, jazz, and trying to learn it and refine it on its own terms,” Scofield said. “The whole thing of improvisation, so important in jazz, turns out to be like life itself. It’s what we all do every day when we go through life and have to deal with our different situations. The improvisation element in jazz music makes it really real. In a way that other music maybe isn’t. We can relate to that improvisation that we hear intuitively as just part of life.”

It seems unlikely she has the same staying power as the likes of Madonna, Cher and Whitney.

Making a glistening impression on the back of the release of their debut album, Speed of Sound/ Alarm Music (2011), their second record We Were Drifting on a Sad Song (2012) highlights the maturity of the group’s sound, honing in hard on their influences – the likes of Sigur Ros, Mogwai and Grizzly Bear. Be warned: the band still hide behind their Nick Cave-inspired rabbit masks on stage.

Performing alongside Waal is his long-term collaborator, Gustaf Ljunggren. Of a similar mould to Waal, Ljunggren operates various electronic instrumentation – as well as the sax, guitar and mandolin – and together the band will offer a stark alternative to an orthodox concert.

he time of year has come when most Copenhageners may wish for a second sun, so few and sparse are the sunlit hours – and a source of light is on its way. Sensation, the international electronic music and dance event that has spread to four continents in the last decade, is bringing its 2012 show, ‘Source of Light’, to Copenhagen’s Parken on November 3. Sensation first started in Amsterdam in 2000, where it was held exclusively for the first five years of its existence as an alltrance music event called ‘Sensation White’. Over the last seven years, however, the event has undergone a thorough overhaul. Sensation is now famous
worldwide as an all-white-attire affair – a dress code tribute to the deceased brother of the founder Duncan Stutterheim and a traditiont that has stayed ever since. For the first few years of Sensation’s existence, it featured predominantly ‘trance’ DJs – a style of music that hypnotises you as opposed to thumping and pounding you, into dancing, which is characteristic of more traditional ‘house’ music. Over the years, Sensation began appealing more and more to the ‘house’ crowd, and in 2010 officially proclaimed itself a ‘house’ event with its theme, ‘Celebrate Life With House’. Since 2000, there have been over 70 Sensation events in more than 20 countries, including in 2012, the first ever show in North America, which was held on October 26 and 27 in New York City. But Sensation is no stranger to Copenhagen or its venue, Parken stadium, and those years of experience are sure to smoothly facilitate the combination of Sensation’s sights,
sounds and, of course, pyrotechnics. The event in Copenhagen on November 3 is Sensation’s last of the year and will feature five DJs familiar with the Sensation crowd. Mr White, the evening’s MC and opening act, is appearing fresh off performances at Sensation’s first-ever tours of Asia and North America. His technohouse beats are a mainstay in Sensation’s repertoire of acts. Mr White will be joined by Riva Starr, who made his Sensation debut at this year’s event in Amsterdam; The Man With No Shadow, whose undergroundelectro has been complementing mainstream mixes at Sensation since 2008; Sharam, half of the duo Deep Dish responsible for hits such as ‘Flashdance’ and ‘Say hello’; and finally Sander Van Doorn, the evening’s headline act. Van Doorn’s music is a cross between trance and house and, as both a Dutchman and longstanding Sensation DJ, Van Doorn knows precisely how to
please this particular audience. Van Doorn is one of the world’s hottest DJs, currently ranked #16 in the world by electronic music magazine DJMag. He’s headlined several Sensations and played electronic music’s biggest venues and events, including Amnesia in Ibiza and the Ultra Music Festival in Miami. His set is not one to miss. While the regular tickets cost 590 kroner, the deluxe tickets include VIP entrance and access to the ‘Deluxe Area’ with a panoramic view of the ongoings at Parken, which has an open bar with beer and spirits. Sensation’s Parken party will be the last one of the year, as the next scheduled event is not until July in Amsterdam. However, many doubted that such poetic perfection and sure-fire authenticity could be repeated in their 2012 release, Bloom (2012), but their concerns were unfounded. The record has dredged up the deep impalpable feelings that deride the human condition and translate them into perfectly painted soundscapes – and it debuted at #7 in the US Billboard charts. Working on a number of music production projects, solo work and collaborations through the ‘00s, Murray will no doubt play some of the tracks from his latest album, In Gods We Trust, Crush Microphones To Dust (2011). STABBINGS, drugs, and electro-rave music − oh my! Swedish House Mafia have certainly attracted a ‘party hard, rage harder’ reputation. But, after four years and an astronomical rise to the top of dance charts, the trio from Stockholm are calling it quits with a farewell tour, appropriately called ‘One Last Tour’. The group has amassed a giant following of headbangers and moshers alike, and their music has been a curated mixture of original songs, collaborations, and remixes that have become cult favourites in clubs over the years. The DJs − Axwell, Steve Angello, and Sebastian Ingrosso − released their final album, Until Now, this past week, and it will be the soundtrack to ‘One Last Tour’. PEOPLE COLLECT all kinds of things, and most families have an eccentric relative with a weird and wonderful collection of napkins or matchboxes from around the world. Stamps and coins are probably the most popular and timeless items for collectors, as the Copenhagen Coin Fair 2012 will once again bear witness to. Until the end of the 1800s, coin collecting was the exclusive pastime of the nobility: the hobby of kings. Frederik III’s coin collection can be still seen in the Royal Collection, which is part of the comprehensive coin collection at the National Museum. In modern times, it has become a highly popular activity: the king of hobbies. Numismatics really took off in the 1970s as increasing amounts of leisure time led to an explosion in interest, and many local clubs and associations were formed and still exist today. With the advent of online auction houses, a lot of the fun of trawling Denmark’s small coin and stamp collecting shops in pursuit of that rare coin has been adversely affected - and values have plunged with the focus shifting to banknotes, medals and older coins. However, coin collectors are by no means a dying breed, and on November 3 they are converging on the Radisson Hotel in Frederiksberg for the 2012 Copenhagen Coin Fair. The fair, which tends to attract over 400 guests, gives the dedicated numismatist a chance to mingle and swap coins and stories with fellow aficionados, while also perusing the exhibitors’ wares. buyer looking for a long-term investment. Most fascinating are those who have chosen to narrow the focus of these mystical objects of desire. A complete set of coinage, year by year, for a particular denomination, perhaps a fascination with coins from the Third Reich, or an obsession with the socalled error coins − ones with flaws accidentally made during the minting process. For these people, the value lies not in the coins themselves, but in crowning it all off with the completion of a long-awaited set. Thirty different stands on the day will provide plenty of variety: from well-known institutions such as The Royal Mint and auctioneers Bruun Rasmussen, to the other side of the coin represented by smaller dealers hoping to make their mark with their coins lovingly indexed into ring binders. Also in attendance are coin clubs like the Danish Numismatic Association, now in its 127th year of existence. Starting your own coin collection is a relatively easy, but potentially addictive affair. Many inherit a coin collection, develop a yen for it and take it from there. Starting from scratch is also a possibility as even many ancient coins now go for surprisingly affordable prices.
For those interested in Copenhagen coin collections, the impressive collection of more than 500,000 exhibits at the National Museum, Ny Vestergade, is a mustsee. But be warned about trying to sell any you find: treasure trove laws dating back to 1241 mean that ‘finders, keepers’ is not the rule for the metal detector enthusiasts. A smaller collection can be found in the confines of Rosenborg Castle near Nørreport station. Here the collection of the aforementioned Danish king of coins, Frederik III, has found its final resting place. The Royal Mint itself, at Havnegade 5, has a recently-opened permanent exhibition in the Foyer of the National Bank, open on weekdays from 9-17. If these whet your appetite for Danish coins, then the website www.danskmoent.dk is the truly amazing online home of Danish currency throughout the ages, complete with photos and information you can only begin to imagine. Yes, you might spot the odd anorak or two, but numismatists will be in their element at the Copenhagen Coin Fair, for these are people who truly know that money does indeed make the world go around. Rump roast

FEW THINGS are as inviting as a juicy rump roast on a cold winter’s night. Also known as Culottesteg in Denmark, this lovely piece of meat makes for the perfect Sunday dinner. Not as expensive as you would imagine, a 2-3kg rump roast can often be picked up on special in supermarkets, such as Irma, for around 130kr. Depending on how many you are feeding, it is also possible to cut the piece in half and freeze the remainder for another day, as my husband and I often do. Rump roast doesn’t always have the best reputation for being succulent and easy to cook, but this needn’t be
a problem as long as you are willing to spend a little bit more time on the preparation. There are two cardinal rules for cooking a delicious roast rump. The first is to always make sure you take it out of the refrigerator in plenty of time so that it can adjust to room temperature. There are many muscle fibres in the meat that, if cold, will shrink quickly when they hit heat, and this will cause the meat to toughen. Secondly, never use a Pyrex/glass pan as they are just not designed for such high temperatures and will most likely explode. Instead, always use a standard metal roasting pan.

Tucked away behind a hard-to-find door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS

So much more than another stock standard Copenhagen sushi place, it offers a delicious range of snacks, salads, small dishes, sushi, meats from the grill, Yakitori (skewered meats), tempura, sashimi, and, of course, a range of sweets. Its Scallop Katafi is the best in the city, while the Yakitori left us speechless – it was divine. Reasonably priced, impeccably chic and unbelievably tasty, this is the place to go if you want to be a hero amongst the trendsetters. REMOVE THE joint from refrigerator at least 1 hour before cooking, but keep it wrapped. It’s vital you don’t start cooking the joint until it’s reached room temperature. Preheat the oven to 190°C. With a sharp knife make eight small incisions around the roast. Place a sliver of garlic into each incision. Take a tablespoon or so of olive oil and spread all over the roast. Sprinkle the roast with salt and pepper.

It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that you don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that you can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. Place the roast in your roasting tray fatty-side up. The roast is placed fat side up so that when the fat melts, it will bathe the entire roast in its juices. Brown the roast at 190°C for half an hour. Afterwards lower the heat to 170°C. The roast should take somewhere from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours to cook. The shape of the roast will affect the cooking time, so if your roast is on the long and narrow side, versus a more round shape, it may take less time to cook. When the roast starts to drip its juices and it is brown on the outside, check the temperature with a meat thermometer. Pull the roast from the oven when the inside temperature of the roast is 57°C to 60°C. Let the roast rest for at least 15 minutes, covered in aluminium foil to keep warm, before carving to serve.

HOW DO YOU choose a restaurant in a city you’ve never been to before? Well, obviously, one way is to read a piece like this! But just imagine you needed to write a review about one. Then you would probably, as I did, go out for a stroll down a long and winding road and trust your wandering eyes to lead you to a door. The closer you get, the more you would start relying on your other senses. Hearing: what’s the ambiance like? Smell: how pleasing are the aromas being released from the kitchen? Taste: probably the most important test of them all – did it pass? Touch: you enjoyed the meal, but hugging the waitress was probably a bit over the top. Tapasfabrikken was a sense sensation from start to finish. I noticed it across the street from where I was attending a meeting and was immediately inspired. As I advanced, I was won over by its beautifully set tables at which people were enjoying delicious looking dishes. One word entered my head: perfection. Visda, the owner, manager, sous-chef and occasional waitress, loves Paris! She visits the capital as much as she can, two to three times per year. That’s why the walls are filled with pictures from the capital of love, and despite the inclusion of ‘tapas’ in the restaurant’s name, the décor is completely French. Visda has worked hard at designing the place, and the ceiling is particularly impressive, displaying a painting of the square in front of the restaurant, along with the surrounding buildings. As are the table arrangements, which are both tasteful and accomodating. As well as the obligatory bottle of water, there is some complimentary home-made bread and olive oil. Overall, the effect is a welcoming one. If the décor is of no concern to you, you must be wondering by now what they serve here. Well, I cannot any longer contain myself from bragging about the dishes that my friend and I had, all meticulously picked by Visda, flawlessly prepared by her chef (who by the way, if you are a sucker for spicy details as I am, you will be glad to find out used to work for Tom

VER A period of several years, we follow protagonist Erik, portrayed by Danish actor Thure Lindhardt (Flame & Citron, Brotherhood). A documentary filmmaker who has somewhat lost his way in life, we find him picking up men in a kind of phone roulette session that involves asking several questions before moving on to the next call or arranging imminent no-strings sex − a sort of pre-internet speed dating service. This is how Erik meets Paul (Booth), a pretty lawyer with a crack habit and a girlfriend. Their furtive encounter soon blossoms into something more, and though his girlfriend poses little threat to their love, his drug addiction and compulsion for promiscuity constantly derails their relationship. Keep The Lights On is billed incorrectly as Thure Lindhardt’s first Englishspeaking lead role; that honour goes to the Danish/Canadian comedy Eddie The Sleepwalking Cannibal. It is, however, his first dramatic lead in English. Lindhardt is an established talent in his homeland, and his performance here carries the film from beginning to end. Shot on grainy 16mm, the film employs a cinema-verité style that resembles American independents like John Cassavettes, although the tone of the film itself is much more sober than that. This is closer to Brett Easton Ellis’s New York, teeming with high-earning, beautiful young men whose introspective self-concerns reflect the boredom of the elite bourgeoisie to which they

belong. Similarly, this is not the New York you’ve seen in Martin Scorsese or Woody Allen movies, but the city of Whit Stillman or, more recently, Steve McQueen’s masterpiece Shame. As such, it is to Lindhart’s credit and the humanity of the script that we can identify ourselves in a relationship between this high flying crack addict and a slacker filmmaker, who we learn from his older sister (a small role for Paprika Steen), has an aversion to work that sees their daddy bail him out repeatedly. Despite Lindhardt crucially giving the film its heart, neither his performance nor the film itself is without
flaws. While it’s relatively difficult for this reviewer to judge the nuances of his Danish work, according to these English-language outings, Lindhardt is most at home in scenes of emotional extremity; we believe his breakdowns much more than his confessional or conversational scenes. Perhaps these indications of self-awareness can be attributed to his performing in English, but Lindhardt rarely seems to fully inhabit the skin of his character. It’s a niggling shame because aesthetically, he fits the part perfectly, and when a scene calls for bravery, Lindhardt is fearless. On the telephone dating service that
starts the film, one of the most pertinent compatibility tests to be established is both partners’ preference for ‘domination or passivity’. The film then details the ways in which degrees of this fundamental pre-requisite for any relationship can result in both harmony and destruction. Paul’s pre-occupation with his own needs and Erik’s dogged accommodation of them become a cycle that neither one of them is able to break. Writer/ director Ira Sachs betrays his film’s autobiographical nature in the film’s meandering latter third. As such, the film feels slice-of-life truthful, but some narrative objectivity could have undoubt-
edly improved the film’s pacing. There will be inevitable comparisons with recent UK indie-hit Weekend: both films put a relationship between gay men under the microscope, and both make narrative vehicles of love-making and drug-taking. Beyond that though, the similarities are superficial. Weekend is the superior film, but Keep The Lights On is far more ambitious. Weekend is a small, contained film that covers a single weekend while Lights On aims to summarise an entire relationship over the course of a decade. If it fails, it’s because it aims so high and offers too much.

ESIDES being relatable and brilliantly engaging, Your Sister’s Sister is a tribute to a foolproof script and the integrity of professional acting. The plot doesn’t depend on any device you couldn’t build yourself, or on manoeuvres you couldn’t perform on a stage. In fact, I hope someone rewrites this film for the stage because
it contains enough raw emotion, fun and embarrassment to achieve the perfect blend of comedy, anguish and a new perspective. Shelton’s fourth film behind the camera, Humpday (2009), starred Duplass, who reappears here as the male lead, Jack, a 30-something slacker. He’s down-to-earth but emotionally unstable and still hurting from his brother’s recent tragic death. Iris (Blunt) shares his loss as she was Jack’s brother’s girlfriend. In an attempt to help, Iris persuades Jack to go and find himself, alone, in her family cabin on an island in the Pacific Northwest. To his surprise, the cabin is
not empty when Jack arrives, and thus he meets Iris’s alluring sister Hannah (DeWitt, The Watch), who is recently single and, to Jack’s disappointment, a lesbian. Lonely and confused, the two have more in common than they could’ve hoped. Soon they’re bonding famously over a bottle of tequila, and the consequent excitement blurs Hannah’s sexual orientation. Exeunt Hannah and Jack. What was intended as a forgettable roll in the hay acquires much deeper ramifications when Iris suddenly drops by the next morning. And it only gets worse when one character’s decidedly unethical move and another’s secret feelings are
dramatically revealed. Amazing how watching three likeable people sipping wine in a cabin can feel like watching a train crash. Don’t even get me started on the killer ending. I suppose it’s mostly due to the believability of the central characters. The familiar maxim that a character has to undergo a development in order to be interesting is more than observed here, thanks to a creative, almost inspired use of classic themes and contemporary issues. The film’s excellent use of improvisation further lends an honesty that drives the drama home in a refreshing and lucid way. KASPER R GULDBERG

With luminous performances from both Gordon-Levitt and Blunt, this is some of the most confident, well thought-out drama this side of an Oscar. A classic is born. MW

Searching for Sugar Man (15) Dir: Malik Bendjelloul; Swe/ US/SA doc, 2012, 86 mins If you disappear into obscurity after an undistinguished music career, you can always take pride in the fact that halfway across the world a nation is being inspired by your music to start a revolution against a racist oppressive regime. That’s at least what happened in the case of US ‘70s rocker Rodriguez, who was a hero to many during the South African struggle against apartheid. Swedish filmmaker Bendjelloul follows two South African fans as they try to find out what happened to their hero, and the result is as compelling as a real-life detective story. LL

Taken 2 (15) Dir: Olivier Megaton; US action, 2012, 95 mins; Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen, Leland Orser The first film was a guilty pleasure that worked only for Neeson’s fast-paced and high-octane action sequences, and in spite of a mind-numbingly dreadful performance from Maggie Grace. Now they’re both back, but this time with frenetic fight scenes that appear to be stolen straight out of Die Hard, and even more screen time for Grace. Skip it. LL
Ted (15) Dir: Seth MacFarlane; US comedy, 2012, 106 mins; Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlane A tale of Peter Pan-esque protracted male adolescence and ‘broversus-ho’ ethics, this is a film that squarely relies on the comic potential of random flotsam and jetsam pop culture, tongue-in-cheek offensiveness and state-of-the-art foul-mouthed puppet humour. As with much of MacFarlane’s work, it is devoid of any trace of sophistication or finesse, and is fitfully amusing thanks only to the occasional deadpan shock-value jokes offered by Mark Wahlberg’s crooked straight-man performance. Also Playing The Imposter (15) Dir: Bart Layton; UK doc, 2012, 94 mins; Frederic Bourdin, Carey Gibson, Beverly Dollarhide, Charlie Parker Despite a promising premise for an intriguing documentary about a French man trying to convince a Texas family that he is their missing son, there is a level of over-stylisation that irks. We are drowned in gratuitous pseudo-tension and filmic technique, which ultimately serve only to detract from the genuine craft involved in documenting this complex and fascinating story.
Lawless (15) Dir: John Hillcoat; US/drama/action, 2012, 116 mins; Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Guy Pearce, Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Mia Wasikowska Hillcoat has delivered an immersive experience, a fully realised world populated by morally complex characters and a stellar cast − including a surprisingly good LaBeouf who puts in the most amiable performance of his career. Despite this though, the heightened on-screen violence isn’t particularly enjoyable or justifiable. The films remains a solidly crafted but cold-blooded affair. MW

On The Road (15) Dir: Walter Salles; US drama, 2012, 137 mins; Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, Kristin Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen The novel portrayed an intoxicatingly fierce personal quest for meaning and belonging in a cold war America full of conflict and contradiction. This adaptation fails to capture this search for a codified new way forward and instead relies on oversimplified sensation, surface angst and fragmented movement from one isolated and unexplored bohemian bubble to another, each of which seems to deflate with the merest of bombastic whines and groans. Moonrise Kingdom (7) Dir: Wes Anderson; US comedy, 2012, 94 mins; Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances MacDormand, Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Jared Gilman, Katy Howard This newest feature film from debonair filmmaker Anderson has a brilliant cast, a wry script and stunning cinematography. It’s fashionable entertainment, and will no doubt please Anderson’s considerable fan-base. But under all the bells and whistles, is it just another coming-of-age, feel-good romcom – even a faintly insincere one at that? MW

Last Resort TV3, Tue 21:00
Like, a US sub, basically, hides out on an island (Lost), cool, after refusing to fire its nukes (Crimson Tide), totally, at Pakistan (Slumdog Millionaire), whatever. Last Resort is “part Hunt for Red October, part Lord of the Flies”, said the Wall Street Journal. That’s a good thing, is it? “Once you get past the stupid stuff, such as the sex-goddess tech designer and the equally gorgeous chief navigator, there’s something pretty damned good here,” chimed the New York Post. What if we can’t get past the stupid stuff? “The pilot is sensational − a suspenseful, cinema-quality grabber,” echoed the Philadelphia Inquirer. So they blew half the series budget on it. Go on then, if there’s nothing else on, I’ll watch it as a last …
The same thing happened with Penn & Teller: Fool Us (BBC Ent, Sun 22:45), which I found myself watching this week against my better judgement. They’re kind of irritating, aren’t they? In this show, they watch magic tricks to see if they can rumble how it’s done. Infuriatingly, unless it’s the kind of trick a dog could see through, they give the contestant a ‘Magician’s Handshake’ and say: “We know how that was done, don’t we” and move on. The popular British series Downton Abbey (SV1, Sun 21:30) has moved on from the Great War (pssst, another one will be along in a minute) by signing up Shirley MacLaine, who will no doubt square up against Maggie Smith for the clip they’ll play 50 times at next year’s Emmys.
Elsewhere, British sitcom Friday Night Dinner (SV1, Sun 22:40) is back for a second series; Whitney (TV3, Wed & Thu 23:50) is an annoying-looking US sitcom, with a poor IMDB rating, that promises sarcasm (err, great); Terror/Counter Terror (TV3 Puls, Sun 00:00) and Scouted (K4, Thu 21:25) go behind TV3, Tue 21:00 Last Resort the scenes of two of the world’s most abhorrent industries: terrorism and fashion modelling; and you’ll enjoy the US election more if you watch The Choice (DR2, Tue 20:30), which most voters tend to make at birth (it screened in the US on October 9), and Is America Working? (BBC World, Sat 15:10 & Sun 21:10), a chance for the Birthers to have one last dig before Obama’s reign is reborn or aborted. BEN HAMILTON
