I TEND to quite like photography exhibitions, as long as the subjects aren’t preened and cleaned and looking directly into the screen. So having initially been quite intrigued by The people behind the plate (see G3 for details), an exhibition of photos of people who work in public kitchens, I’ve been left a little bit disappointed. I guess I was looking for some sort of throwback, something that would take me back in time to the era when dinner ladies had stubble, served you with a fag poking out of their mouth and came into work smelling of the same chip fat they’d tried to wash off the night before. Instead these people look too happy, like they’ve been sanitised by Jamie Oliver. Most of them serve organic food, we’re told. Well done, have a medal, but at a photo exhibition I want to be taken to places I wouldn’t normally go, not the backend of a Subway. Thank God for Harold Pinter. One evening in his presence is enough to wash off all the clinical
cleanliness and feel-good claptrap. He keeps it real: we’re all scum and given the chance we’d wear the other boot if it fit. Ian Burns’s decision to put on Old Times (see G2 for details) this autumn, five years after his double bill of The Dumb Waiter and The Lover, is only bettered by the one to join forces with Sue HansenStyles and Angela Heath-Larsen of Why Not Theatre company. On the scene for several years now, they intelligently cater to niche audiences and this has led to recognition outside the English-language media (pretty much us, I guess). Vita & Virginia, their production of a lesbian love affair involving Virginia Woolf, won rave reviews last year from the Danish media, something that quite often eludes Burns due to a perception that his choices tend to be too traditional. We prefer classic, but then again, what do you expect from theatre critics – pretentiousness comes with the profession. Still, it will be interesting to see if the girls’ streetcred makes the difference. It’s about time this city stood up and paid attention to the sterling efforts of Burns, particularly when you consider he’s won awards for his services to Swedish theatre! Yeah, give me Pinter over The people behind the plate anytime. I want to feel alive, not dead inside.

Kate and Deeley have been married for the past 20 years, but their rural tranquillity is interrupted when Anna, Kate’s long-time (and somewhat long-lost) friend with whom she shared a room and a bohemian London lifestyle in her 20s, shows up for a visit. Anna, who clearly harbours a love for Kate to match that of her husband’s, and Deeley engage in a battle to posses Kate, armed only with their memories and their love.

Come and enjoy the music of Tom Waits mixed with original and unusual orchestral interpretation. LL
Reumert Award-winning director Barry McKenna, who just finished an excellent run of Calendar Girls with the Copenhagen Theatre Circle, first tackled Pinter in ‘82, when he played the part of Aston in The Caretaker. Since then he has directed both Pinter’s The Room and Celebration, but feels that there is something specific to Old Times that truly resonates with audiences. “There is something far greater in this text than I have experienced before,” he told the Copenhagen Post. “The plot of Old Times seems to hark back to the dawn of time and the forces of man and woman. Man against woman, woman against man, woman joined to woman uniting with man to engender continuance of nature, of order and of life. Deeley, Anna and Kate represent the forces that are embodied in the greatest of Greek tragedies. The play itself is a ritual that must be carried out by these three people in order to avoid chaos.” The beauty of Pinter’s enigmatic writing is that each interpretation delivers a wildly different play – from metaphysical Murakami-esque surrealism to the nitty-gritty realism of human emotions and motivations. Where McKenna plans to take his audience remains to be seen. That Theatre’s leading laddie Burns, meanwhile, is excited at the prospect of teaming up with the lassies from Why Not

Theatre Company, who followed up on the standout success of their 2011 production of Vita and Virginia (InOut’s favourite English-language production of that year) with a sexy, imaginative staging of Desdemona in the spring. “As far as working with Sue and Angela is concerned that’s something that’s been on the cards for a while,” Burns tells InOut. “This play has given us the opportunity of collaborating on something we all felt was brilliant and a good vehicle for us as actors to get our teeth into.” McKenna, who has directed several productions for each theatre group, also welcomed the co-operation. “The actors fell upon the material and devoured it rather like actors fall upon a buffet at an end of the run party (or indeed at any function!)” McKenna boasted of his actors. “There are some things one remembers even though they may never have happened. There are things I remember which may never have happened but as I recall them so they take place.” So read the most famous lines from Old Times, and you need only to have misplaced your car keys to know that this statement is undeniably true. Isn’t Copenhagen lucky?! Madame Butterfly, one of the best loved operas of all time, is being staged in this city for the second year in a row. This is pretty much the most visually beautiful opera you can witness – but that’s only if you’re able to see anything through the countless tears you’re sure to be shedding. Yes, Puccini’s opera contains everything: love, betrayal and suicide. It’s certainly not for the faint-hearted. VS
ists, teachers, communicators and ethnologists – were responsible for instituting new policies, training employees and overseeing the project in its entirety, any goals set by KMH could not have been accomplished without its foot soldiers. “These are the people who made it happen,” says Dahl, looking at the portraits filling the room. “This gives credit to the people on the ground.” Copenhagen’s mayor Frank Jensen shared Dahl’s sentiment when he attended the exhibition’s opening on October 9, accompanied by many of the photographed chefs who were also invited to attend. The mayor called KMH’s 75 percent organic ingredients accomplishment a “world sensation”, and credited the staff at KMH’s kitchens with bringing Copenhagen a reputation for food that extends way beyond the praise for its Michelin stars. Certainly the exhibition succeeds in paying tribute to these cooks and the work they do on a daily basis, but it manages to affect on a more personal level. Here are hundreds of images of intricately prepared meals, using organic ingredients to achieve a healthy result. And the people behind the plates aren’t high-brow chefs or condescending foodies, they’re smiling everyday people just like the rest of us. So if they can prepare a meal that’s organic and healthy, why can’t everybody else? HENRY BUTMAN

CURRENTLY on display at the Museum of Copenhagen is a stunning, somewhat hectic photo exhibition of 1,300 shots of individuals who work in public kitchens and the food they serve. If, unassumingly, you stumbled upon the exhibition, its focus on cooks, and the food they’ve prepared, would be obvious. And for some, that will be enough: the portraits succeed in capturing and bringing to light a human element in each of photographer Brian Berg’s subjects. The photographed plates entice the palate and, paired with the portrait of the chef responsible for its preparation, further imbue the exhibition with a dormant, quiet personality. That personality is at the heart of the exhibition and extends through its periphery, and it’s the personality of an unseen force: Københavns Mad Hus (The Copenhagen House of Food − KMH). Established in 2007 to improve the quality of meals offered by the City of Copenhagen, KMH oversees close to 60,000 meals prepared daily in 900 kitchens throughout the city. And this exhibition, aptly entitled ‘The people behind the plate’,
is a celebration of the staff in those 900 kitchens who are charged with reaching KMH’s most ambitious goal that 75 percent of the ingredients used throughout their kitchens are organic. The photographs, taken over the span of a year by Danish photojournalist Brian Berg, capture both the chefs and the meals they prepared on the day Berg showed up at the kitchen. And while they evidence the healthy overhaul undertaken by KMH – colourful fruits and vegetables comprise the majority of almost every plate, with small cuts of fish, side salads and, of course, rugbrød filling in the negative space – the better half of each image displays a portrait of the proud chef or chefs. Pride is apparent in the expressions and attire of many of the photographed chefs, especially in those who happened to be wearing their ‘Eat’ or ‘Kiss my Eat’ t-shirts the day Berg showed up. KMH’s ‘Eat’ programme was introduced on the premise that schools should provide healthy food options for those unable to pack their own lunch, and on Kulturnatten, KMH served food typical of an ‘Eat’-inspired menu “just to show how good it can be”, said Rikke Dahl, a spokesperson for KMH. To Dahl, the exhibition is an homage and testament to the hard work carried out by kitchen staff in KMH’s 900 kitchens citywide. Although KMH and its 35 employees – including chefs, food special-

he Flu season is upon us, and for a prudent individual that means plenty of hand washing, warm clothing and inoculation. Or, you could also remedy the cold weather and the leering risk of infection with a night out on the town with The Vaccines. Following the release of their latest album, Come of Age, The Vaccines are about to tour Europe to promote their new tunes. Come of Age comes with great expectations following the success of the indie rock band’s debut album What Did You Expect from the Vaccines?, which came out in March of last year, clinching the number 4 spot
in the UK Album chart. Singles like ‘If You Wanna’ helped propel the band straight onto the pop charts with their catchy choruses and rock guitar pop. “When we started, it was just a bit of fun,” the band’s frontman and lead guitarist, Justin Young, told the Guardian. “We were all a bit depressed. But a mate had a studio and we had a deal that we could go in and use it for free. I thought we were gonna stare at our feet and make ten minutes of noise. That was the plan. We did ‘If You Wanna’ and I sang the chorus as a joke, because it was cheesy, but everyone was: ‘That was fucking cool.’ That’s when we thought: ‘Why not be a pop band?’ I remember thinking: ‘Enough people are gonna like this that we’re gonna be able to headline the Barfly. This is a fucking great pop song.’” Not only that, but The Vaccines have been selected for ten differ-
ent nominations in the past year, of which they won three – namely ‘Best Emerging Talent’ (Quintessentially Awards), ‘Best New Band’ (NME Awards) and ‘New Music Award’ (XFM). Not too bad when you consider that the band made their live debut in October 2010 at a small venue tucked away in East London. One year later, What Did You Expect from the Vaccines? went platinum and they sold out the legendary 5,000-capacity Brixton Academy in London. “I had always looked down my nose at bands I’d seen accelerate too quickly,” Young told the Guardian when referring to the band’s ascent. “I always said: ‘Oh, I’m never gonna build my house on sand.’ But it was absolutely impossible to stop.” The band is another example of the influence YouTube is having on the music scene, which has seen previously unknown talents make an in-
stant impact by just uploading their videos onto the internet. “At the time we were trying to stay in control of it,” bassist Arni Hjörvar said in the same interview. “And I think we felt we were in control. But it feels very different now to how it did then.” “For someone who’s insecure, it’s quite an uncomfortable prospect, the idea that people who have never met you and never will are talking about you, not just as a musician, but as a human being,” Young added. “I think we were all – me in particular – quite uncomfortable, and we were just doing everything we could to slam on the brakes.” The Vaccines have drawn strong parallels to the sounds of The Ramones and The Strokes, but have said that they are strongly influenced by music ranging from 1950s rock ‘n’ roll to American hardcore from the 1980s. And despite only hav-
ing emerged onto the music scene in 2011, the band have built up an impressive portfolio of opening acts for heavyweight bands such as The Stone Roses, Arctic Monkeys, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Arcade Fire. It’s therefore no surprise that for their next album, The Vaccines have teamed up with celebrated British producer Ethan Johns (the recent winner of the 2012 Brit Award for Best British Producer), who has previously worked with the likes of Tom Jones and Kings of Leon. So if the weather’s giving you the blues, or the season’s circulating sickness is making you feel grungy, why not cure yourself of such ailments by heading down to Pumpehuset next Wednesday and inoculating yourself with a serious dose of guitar rock pop. Currently on her first Danish tour, this is an opportunity to get a glimpse of an artist who could well become one of Denmark’s biggest names over the coming years.

As musical troubadours, they pride themselves on a sound founded on a delicate balance of Eastern and Western influences, heavy usage of the electric organ and energetic live shows. Eclectic, daring and catchy, the release of what will be their seventh studio album, Isle of Men, will make ripples beyond the jazz circles here in Copenhagen. Expect a party environment: after playing five sample tracks from the new record, they’ll turn to the decks for a late-night DJ set.

Store Vega; 20:00; 170kr Led by Danish-diva Mette Lindberg’s charismatic vocal style and Lars Iversen’s likeable electro and rock mixes, the duo have become two of Danish pop’s most recognisable faces. Their massive hit, ‘The Golden Age’ – the centre-piece of Roskilde a couple of years back – and CSS’s remix of their hit single ‘Heart Attack’ has put them on the international music map. Their second record, Out of Frequency, which was released in January, has whisked the band across the US and Europe, building on their strong foundations there.
Lee Konitz Quartet
Jazzhus Montmartre; 20:00; 375kr Chicago-born Lee Konitz – described by the prestigious Montmartre as ‘The Giant’ – is an influential jazz composer and alto saxophonist. A frontrunner of the bebop and avantgarde movement known as the Cool Project during the ‘40s and ‘50s, Konitz frequently collaborated alongside the likes of Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. Half a century later, Konitz has retained his markedly distinct approach, while his improvisational dynamism remains just as fiery. Performing alongside Konitz will be Danish pianist Florian Weber and American bassist Jeff Denzon.

hoir of Young Believers returned to Store Vega for their second concert of the year at the venue on Saturday. Led by frontman Jannis Noya Makrigiannis, the Believers managed to brighten up the damp, dark evening with a solid show that featured some of the band’s revered hits along with a few songs off their latest album, Rhine Gold. Ultimately though, the evening failed to truly take off despite the best efforts of the internationally-acclaimed Danish indie pop band. Makrigiannis and company took the stage as the last act of the evening, following performances by 4 Guys from the Future and One Year from Home. A combination of technical
glitches and sound problems resulted in poor opening numbers, which were coldly received by a stiff audience at a venue that was far from its usual capacity. It was clear from the start that this was going to be an uphill struggle for Choir of Young Believers, who went on almost a good half an hour later than they should have. This notwithstanding, the indie pop band were sharp, if not witty, during the entirety of their performance as they did their best to rescue what had been a disappointing couple of hours. The musical career of Choir of Young Believers received a shot in the arm back in February when they dropped their acclaimed second album Rhine Gold – a release that saw the band cultivate the heavily acoustic sound fused with dark, contemplative lyrics that they have become associated with. Saturday’s show featured several tracks off the album, but the live versions failed to match the band’s studio work.

MY CHILDREN were given a packet of Top Trumps this week and have been competing over the most dangerous dinosaur card ever since learning the details of each in turn. When I was their age, I had a pack of cards that named all the kings and queens of England in chronological order. I read and re-read them endlessly until I too knew them by heart. Royal history has been a lifelong interest of mine. I love the splendour that pervades in historic buildings as one walks from room to room imagining the lives that passed through a long time ago. This weekend we made our very first visit to Kronborg Slot in Helsingør. A family trip, the boys bought their Top Trumps to play in the car whilst I told them some of the history of the castle in the hope it would spark an interest once there. I needn’t have worried for as we walked into the grounds of the castle to the sound of cannon fire and galloping horses, the boys, big and small, were instantly fascinated. Built in the 1400s, the castle has been a working building for many years. Until as recently as 1923, it was occupied by the Danish army, before being refurbished and presented to the public as it is today. The enormous fireplaces proved to be an unlikely source of interest and the first destination in each room as the children checked their Father Christmas-bearing capabilities. There is a warm children’s room with a large replica Kronborg to play in, which has a large supply of Lego with which we made four castles and a seagull. Most

tantalising of all were the casemates. The casemates are the cells that used to hold the prisoners down in the foundations of the building. Deep, dark and deathly, they held a menacing grip over us as we climbed down the stairs to investigate. We had taken a torch in anticipation, and I have to say it made a big difference, particularly for the younger boys, as the casemates really are in the bowels of the building and very, very eerie. We had a really enjoyable afternoon seeped in royal history and new questions, and it was great to have a brief diversion from dinosaurs! Few things are more Italian to me than pesto sauce, and those things that usually go hand in hand with the green paste in some delicious recipe. My favourite of these would be spaghetti with pesto – the simplicity is something worth rejoicing. But Denmark has cast this sauce in a new perspective for me. First of all, it was the shock of seeing how much people love it here! Then it was the pleasure of encountering its unmistakable taste in the most unexpected of combinations. Sandwiches are one such choice. Scandinavian black bread with pesto tastes so good
that it even got me thinking that pesto wasn’t in fact Italian at all. I asked one Italian chef about it, and his years of work in Copenhagen must have got him confused as well because he replied, after a brief pause, that pesto is actually Mediterranean. Though there should be no doubts about the Italian origins of the pesto (Genovese), this view of it being Mediterranean raised a pertinent thought in my head: why bother about the past, if its present is so varied and original? Plus its green colour and grass-like texture make it look so Danish!

Tucked away behind a hard-to-find door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS

So much more than another stock standard Copenhagen sushi place, it offers a delicious range of snacks, salads, small dishes, sushi, meats from the grill, Yakitori (skewered meats), tempura, sashimi, and, of course, a range of sweets. Its Scallop Katafi was the best in the city, while the Yakitori left us speechless – it was divine. Reasonably priced, impeccably chic and unbelievably tasty, this is the place to go if you want to be a hero amongst the trendsetters. Keep in mind that with the pesto, most proportions are based on personal preferences. The more you make it the more you will learn how you like it best. First, mince the garlic in the food processor, followed by the chopped basil, pine nuts and a pinch of salt and pepper. Slowly drizzle the olive oil inside with the machine running. Before adding the grated cheese, make sure nothing is stuck on the sides of the food processor. Everything should be mixed together at the same time. If the end result is too thick, add a tablespoon of water to the mixture. It can be either refrigerated (keeps for 2-3 days) or frozen (for longer periods).

Dining the Danes into submission: worth a detour any day THERE WAS ONCE a time when restaurants specialising in steak were considered a man’s domain. When tucking into half a kilogram of prime beef was not exactly lady-like gesture, and staring at restaurant walls laced with trophies of wild game was rather off-putting. However upon entering Retour Steak on Ny Østergade, my traditional opinions on steak restaurants were quickly challenged. Retour boasts the atmosphere of a neighbour’s dinner party, the wine of a top class French cellar, and the food of a fivestar steak restaurant. Instead of walls filled with trophies, there were wall-length mirrors and chalk covered blackboards. It was warm, inviting and surprisingly packed for a Tuesday night. In my humble opinion, Retour should be just as well known for its wine as its food. Classing itself as a French restaurant, it has an impressive list of over 35 wines from top class European vineyards – needless to say it was rather a daunting task to choose one. Forgoing the option of asking for a recommendation, we branched out and ordered a glass of the NV JL Vergnon Conversation champagne and the 2011 Buntsandstein Rebholz Riesling. The champagne was energetic with nice citrus tones and some subtle vanilla flavours, and while it wasn’t as energetic as most champagnes, it was great value. The Riesling on the other hand had a strong aroma, freshness and power to it. Retour once again showed its sophistication by featuring a range of top quality seafood on the starters menu. This is one restaurant that realises the value of its prime steak dish lies in the ability to enjoy it with a hearty appetitive so the seafood is rather light and features good juxtaposing flavours. I ordered the boiled lobster … and I wasn’t disappointed. Served literally ‘claws and all’, it had a significant amount of meat, was very juicy and packed with fresh flavour without the fishiness. My dining partner [Ed: a future edition of Dating the Danes!??] on the other hand opted for the lemon sole. This was one impressive dish due to the accompanying ingredients – served with picked lemon, slices of cauliflower and rugbrød and set on a base of herb mayo. The customer service here should also be noted. The waiting staff were attentive and down-to-earth and let the food sell itself. Any pretentious up-selling of wine or food was off the cards and all our meals arrived within ten minutes of ordering
It’s a happening place, and we’re not just saying that because he’s got his laptop out on the table or because of the ladies at the bar
them. When deciding between the 350g steak or the 500g, we opted for the smaller size and I’m glad we did. It came served with home-made fries and the creamiest béarnaise sauce I’ve ever tasted – they don’t call the chef here the ‘King of Béarnaise’ for nothing! It was a simple, hearty and filling dish to say the least and at only 225kr, it was a steal. Now, as one who was bought up with a steak-loving connoisseur of a father, I know what a good medium rare steak tastes like. Retour cooked our steaks to
perfection without killing the flavours – a rare find at steakhouses these days. Being the dessert lover I am, I couldn’t resist ending the meal with a little something sweet. The dessert choices on offer here are inventive and easy on the pallet. We devoured the late summer berries with salted caramel ice-cream. This dessert was something quite exquisite – as much a savoury experience and it was a sweet one. The berries were set amidst crème fresh mixed with herbs, nuts and biscuit pieces, while the ice-cream came on its own plate as to not steal the show from the berries.
I must conclude this is one restaurant where French sophistication has given new meaning to the term ‘steakhouse’. The meal was as much about the wine as it was the steak, while the seafood starters and adventurous dessert made for one top class taste experience. So inject some warmth into these brisk autumn nights and tuck into the Retour experience. Mangez bien!

T’S NOT often that words such as porn, raw sex, rape and cum-whore, amongst others, are associated with a festival, but for the world’s oldest lesbian, gay, bi and transgender film event, this is just the surface. Provocativeness and titillation aside, the Copenhagen MIX – Lesbian, Gay, Bi and Transgender Film Festival as always promises to provide an insightful, emotional, and oftentimes frank look at the lives of the LGBT community around the world. Aiming to break sexual boundaries and stir up gender politics, there is a great range of events, parties and international films to suit everyone – regardless of sexual orientation. Kicking off their opening night is a showing of the Danish award-winning documentary My Love: The Story of Poul and Mai. It tells the story of one of Denmark’s last pound net fishermen, 62-year-old Poul, who tragically lost his partner years before, but manages to find love again. Directed by Iben Haahr Andersen, who was behind the 2009 Danish hit Hello My Name is Lesbian, this film acts as a reminder that it’s never too late to change the course of one’s life. The event focuses on LGBT people within the music world, starting with Wish Me Away, a touching documentary about American country singer Chely Wright, who chose to come out amid criticism. story of openly gay Hole drummer Patty Schemel’s rise to fame and subsequent addiction turmoil. The real standout, however, promises to be Leave it on the Floor, an amazing, sweaty dance musical that will get people moving. Both Beyonce’s music director and choreographer were involved. As part of this focus, two documentaries and a feature film will be aired. The award-winning Lovely Man portrays the harsh conditions of the majority of Indonesian transgenders in this wellplayed drama, while in Tales of the Waria, pivotal issues of the transgender community are also identified. Contextually Indonesia, which has the world’s largest Muslim population, often faces both gender and sexuality issues, especially for women who openly choose to live as lesbians. This and more themes are addressed in the documentary Children of Srikandi, which is the first film made by a lesbian woman in Indonesia.

A French writer, novelist and filmmaker, she came to fame in 1993 when she released her scandalous novel Baise-Moi (Fuck Me). Since then she has gone on to highlight the remarkable lack of films by female directors and the enduring issue of power relations between the sexes. The women in her films always challenge existing power relations, often because they are portrayed
as violent, sexually active and willful – all traditionally masculine characteristics. This year MIX salutes Despentes by showing the film version of Baise-Moi and her newest film Bye Bye Blondie. HE TROUBLE with making a commercial documentary about past events is fairly obvious – it inevitably involves using reconstructions; and let’s face it, they’re rarely good. Unlike a feature film – which this documentary clearly and desperately wishes it was – one cannot simply just pick and choose the pearls and then
rewrite or simply write out any inanities that don’t fit into the master plan or narrative flow. There is instead a journalistic responsibility to do thorough research, establish facts and a sequences of events, and present them without becoming dry and trite. The integrity is clear in The Imposter, but unfortunately so are its bombastic and clumsily executed wannabefilmic reconstructions. British TV director Bart Layton has chosen to present this outlandish true story from a dizzying array of character viewpoints, resulting in an overly-dramatised series of interviews, re-enactments and home video footage that prove somewhat overblown and repetitive for this shape-shifting
story of Nicholas Barclay, a Texan teenager who disappeared in San Antonio in 1994, only to apparently resurface in Spain almost four years later. Given the title of the film, it is no spoiler to reveal that it was in fact Frédéric Bourdin, a darkhaired, brown-eyed 23-year-old French-Algerian with a history of false impersonation who stumbled into the opportunity to impersonate the blond, blue-eyed Texan boy. With his sociopathic charm, Bourdin makes for compelling viewing, and only gets more so the longer the film progresses and the more his psychotic nature is fully unravelled. We hear his motivations of wanting to belong and to be somebody, and it is laugh-
ably entertaining to see the level of official incompetence from the Spanish and American authorities, the familial self-deception, and the ingenious duplicity that was required to help him along his way. However, despite the content of The Imposter being very thoroughly explored, it is the level of over-stylisation that irks. We are drowned in gratuitous pseudotension and filmic technique, from slow-motion and time-lapse to manipulated audio and overengineered visual transitions, which ultimately only serve to detract from the genuine craft involved in documenting this complex and fascinating story. Searching for Sugar Man (15) Dir: Malik Bendjelloul; Swe/ US/SA doc, 2012, 86 mins If you disappear into obscurity after an undistinguished music career, you can always take pride in the fact that halfway across the world a nation is being inspired by your music to start a revolution against a racist oppressive regime. That’s at least what happened in the case of US ‘70s rocker Rodriguez, who was a hero to many during the South African struggle against apartheid. Swedish filmmaker Bendjelloul follows two South African fans as they try to find out what happened to their hero, and the result is as compelling as a real-life detective story. LL

Now they’re both back, but this time with frenetic fight scenes that appear to be stolen straight out of Die Hard, and even more screen time for Grace. Skip it. LL

As with much of MacFarlane’s work, it is devoid of any trace of sophistication or finesse, and is fitfully amusing thanks only to the occasional deadpan shock-value jokes offered by Mark Wahlberg’s crooked straight-man performance. Despite this though, the heightened on-screen violence isn’t particularly enjoyable or justifiable. The films remains a solidly crafted but cold-blooded affair. MW

This adaptation fails to capture this search for a codified new way forward and instead relies on oversimplified sensation, surface angst and fragmented movement from one isolated and unexplored bohemian bubble to another, each of which seems to deflate with the merest of bombastic whines and groans. If you want to see old Hollywood heroes tear up the town in a fastpaced, shoot-em-dead flick loaded with its share of wry humour, make The Expendables 2 your choice this weekend. WHAT SECRETS do our leaders hold within and about their minds? It is well documented that US president Ronald Reagan and British prime ministers Maggie Thatcher and Harold Wilson developed dementia in their later years, but did it affect them while they were in power? That is the premise of Boss, a new miniseries starring Kelsey Grammer in a Golden Globewinning performance as a Chicago mayor with a degenerative neurological disorder. He keeps his condition a secret from everyone bar his doctor, including his wife (Danish actress Connie Nielsen). With 78 on Metacritic, and a pilot directed by none other than Gus Vant Sant, its portrayal of life at the top has won many fans. “When you have a story as thoroughly in-
volving as this one, evoking both King Lear and Citizen Kane, and when the performances are this good, Boss almost directs itself,” applauds the San Francisco Chronicle. The affliction of the central character in The Silence (DR1, Mon 23:15), a spooky BBC crime miniseries, is life-long: she’s deaf. Portrayed by a real-life deaf actress, and backed up by a stellar cast including Hugh Bonneville, it ultimately fails to live up to the promising premise – a common mishap of most British dramas these days. Most mishaps involving British musicians in the ‘60s involved LSD, and you’d be lost without it on Magical Mystery Tour (SV2, Sat 20:00), a film made by the Beatles that ended up providing videos for many of their songs – most notably
‘I Am the Walrus’. The progamme is one of several marking the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ debut release ‘Love me Do’. Among them is Nowhere boy, a moving film about the teenage years of John Lennon. Elsewhere, US scifi series Falling Skies (TV3+, Thu 22:00) makes its debut; it’s a good week for TV3 Puls, Tue 22:00 Boss new films with Guy Ritchie’s Rocknrolla (K6, Mon 21:00), Prince of Persia (K5, Thu 21:00), Soloman Kane (K5, Sat 21:45) and Shanghai (DR2, Fri 20:00) all making their bows; we’ve got the 2011 season of Hell’s Kitchen (TV3 Puls, Thu 22:00); don’t miss the second series of medical comedy Getting On (SV2, Mon 19:30), which stars British comedienne Jo Brand, a former pychiatric nurse.
