ROSKILDE (see G3 for our preview) won’t clash with the football this year. Not sure whether that’s a good thing. Back in 2007, I did some research that showed that festivals during major football tournaments (1998-2006) outsold those that didn’t by over 5,000 a year.

This year, we’re once again focusing on the one-day tickets as the festival tickets can sell out in the last fortnight if the weather reports are good. And as things stand, they don’t look bad. While there’s rain expected, temperatures are expected to reach 25 degrees – the mandatory heat for wearing shorts.

But make sure you don’t wear golfer’s socks, particularly if you’ve recently turned 60 and can take advantage of the free admission offered on Sunday, just like Bob Geldof, Chrissie Hynde and Johnny Ramone (he would have been).

Not sure how many do, but it stands to reason that this policy could become problematic as one

of the few things that remains consistent during your life is your fundamental taste in music.

While many grow to despise their old clothes, tattoos, and certain members of their family, ‘Light my Fire’ still sounds as innovative today as it did to those who first heard it back in 1966. People aren’t going to start liking Vera Lynn and ballroom dancing just because they’re getting on a bit.

Are the fans of classical music dying out? Not according to the organisers of the Frederiksværk Music Festival (see G9), who are back with a stronger line-up than ever for the month of July. Also prominent this week, for those not braving Roskilde, is Future Kulture (see G2) and the release of a whole bunch of kids films.

Or at least that’s what I thought when I saw the title Martha Marcy May Marlene (see G18) and learnt the main star is Elizabeth Olsen, the younger sister of the Olsen brats (who are probably in their 30s by now – who cares?).

Incidentally, they have an older brother, Trent Olsen, who’s also an actor, although his credits so far have mostly been confined to playing himself in his siblings’ TV series. Sounds like a legend in the making.

Rest assured, the Olsens is one taste that we will all grow out of.

The Cultural Festival

Started in 1994, Future Kulture aims to promote cross-cultural dialogue between European youth, using shared interests like sports and music as the basis for interaction. This year, the eight-day exchange programme, which begins on 28 June, will bring youth from Estonia, Finland, Lithuania, the United Kingdom and Denmark together here in Copenhagen. Performance Tivoli Cabaret

Incorporating stand-up comedy, magic, drag queens, sketches, opera and music medleys, this will be a fun variety show, whether you take advantage of the free bar or not.

After discovering that environmental activism was a common cause for all the partners involved in the exchange, it was decided that sustainability would be the theme for the 2012 exchange. When Future Kulture’s application to the Ministry of Education for financing was approved earlier this year, a programme was put together for the event.

“We started contacting the co-operating partners and have been trying to implement the ideals of environmental sustainability within the activities,” explained Future Kulture founder Raymond Andres.

Assar Qureshi, who works with the Ministry of Climate and Energy, will take the participants on a tour of public works in Copenhagen, including a windmill farm. Another expert joining the exchange – via web conference – is Sven Huseby, who in a lecture entitled ‘A Sea Change’ will discuss how pol-

At the Cultural Festival on June 30, you can stop by and enjoy food from around Europe while DJs play music throughout the event. The associations involved with Future Kulture this year will make short presentations, and there will also be a talent show where people can show off their hidden skills. This isn’t the only opportunity to party it up. The Social Media Festival on July 6 will be held in a more central and convenient location for those of you who don’t want to make the trek to Ishøj. Once more, you can sample various European delicacies and activities similar to the Cultural Festival will be arranged. Be sure to stop by one of the events for a good time.

Pierrot in Dyrehaven

Aug 21-Sep 19 Working as a waiter is not the best way to win Columbine’s hand, so Harlequin seeks advice.

After a complicated plan involving doctors and dressing up as a skeleton, the curtain falls when the two lovers are reunited with the help of an adventure fairy.

Thursday’s highlight is legendary British band The Cure (Orange stage, 21:00). Their dark-rooted ‘80s vibe will undoubtedly mystify the crowd.

Perhaps better suited to playing Friday rather than Thursday due to their hit ‘Friday I’m in love’, The Cure is a perfectly valid reason to choose the Thursday ticket. It will be worth it, just

to see lead singer Robert Smith’s larger than life (and Edward Scissorhands-like) persona. Also larger than life, Janelle Monáe (Arena stage, 23:30) is another must see. Thursday is also a great day for fans of psychedelic tribal music, as Django Django (Pavilion stage, 17:30) will also take the stage. It is always available for public viewing because the audience stands outside the window. This exhibition features work by Danish artist Thorbjørn Reuter Christiansen.

The artist’s work will be shown in the context of an ongoing investigation into gentrification efforts in Vesterbro, formerly home to the Carlsberg factory. BF

Hansen works in a variety of mediums including painting, photography and ceramics. His new series, entitled Wet, presents minimal images made by airbrushing plexiglas. Denmark’s Alexander Tovborg works with saturated colour, pattern and form. US artist Chris Johanson has perfected an amateur aesthetic, which references street art. The UK’s David Shrigley is known for his illustrated texts and comic book style. Local artist Christian Schmidt-Rasmussen works with more organic forms, creating a new version of landscape painting. Australian Glenn Sorensen creates graphic images in his artwork. Other artists in this survey show include Varda Caivano and Jonathan Monk. BF

Vo was inspired to replicate the iconic Statue of Liberty, created as a gift for the United States

by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi in 1886. Vo and helpers in Taiwan fabricated an exact copy of the 45-metre high statue that famously stands in New York City Harbour. BF

From cuisine to design, Nordic ideas and trends are of international interest. The curators at Louisiana, building on this recent trend, turn their focus to Nordic architectural development. This survey exhibition gives viewers the opportunity to absorb contemporary Nordic architecture with examples from Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark. BF

Fifteen Danish architectural firms are represented, including the popular firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), along with COBE, which recently won and architecture prize, and NORD Architects, among others. Visitors will be able to walk in and around the models, experiencing the architectural process in a new and different way. The exhibition includes film, sound, and images in addition to the models. Materazzi has used herself, her mother, and her friends as subjects in her dramatic colour photographs. It features 192 black and white images of the contemporary American landscape framed by the windows of various automobiles.

From motels to mountains, the noted photographer, who won the Hasselblad prize in 2005, sees America through a humorous and unassuming eye. BF

A

MERICAN singer Christina Perri, who will visit Denmark for the first time next week, works in strong girl territory, exposing her feelings and her broken and mended relationships more often the wrecked ones. Her voice has a sweet tone, complemented by her tattooed, jagged hair-cut, rocker look.

Her debut album Lovestrong was re-

leased in the spring of 2011 and produced by Joe Chiccareli, who also works with the White Stripes and Tori Amos.

The album was mixed by Michael Brauer, who has Coldplay and Regina Spektor to list as past credits.

“I looked at the album as a whole piece, and the two themes that stood out were love and strength,” Perri writes on her website. “It really titled itself.

Writing about love is just who I am. I’ve tried to write about other things, but ultimately this is what comes out of me.”

A 25-year-old singer-songwriter from Philadelphia, Perri has been making headway in the United States for the past couple of years. Her

breakthrough came in the summer of 2010 when her single ‘Jar Of Hearts’ was used in the American version of the reality dance show So You Think You Can Dance. Overnight, the single was downloaded so many times that she made it directly onto the iTunes Top 10 pop list.

Afterwards she went on tour with James Blunt – no small feat considering the British star’s popularity in the US. And then her pop clout jumped several levels when her ballad ‘A Thousand Years’ was included on the soundtrack of a Twilight film, Breaking Dawn Part I, one of the many vampire franchises still releasing films.

Selecting songs for the album was an easy task for Perri. “I have been writing songs since I was 15, so I reached into my arsenal and picked the ones I felt others should hear,” she said in an interview on her website. “My intention for my music is pretty simple: I want to make people feel less broken and alone.”

Opening for Perri is the young pop singer Caroline Castell, who sings mainly in Danish, but also sometimes in English. Her sound is mixed with electronic nuance and a good deal of lyrical melancholia. She played the recent Vesterbro Festival in a zebrastriped trouser suit and got noticed as

an electro-pop girl with great potential.

Often her songs wrap vocals around only the most basic electronic sounds.

The simple compositions leave plenty of room to focus on the texts. Her empathetic vocals deliver one clear-cut verse out after another, while her right-hand attends to the sounds and mixes.

This 18-year-old girl has already played concerts at venues like Rust, Temple, Posten and DR’s concert hall, and she is accustomed to playing to the audience the way few are at her age. Electro-pop fans in Denmark are expecting great things to come from Castell.

Andromeda Copenhagen Jazzhouse; 20:00; 60kr The annual exodus of Copenhagen is already underway – thousands of city dwellers are making tracks for Roskilde Festival, which opens its gates on Saturday at 6pm – and the hype surrounding festivals tends to put bands off playing in the city this week.

Still, there are a few gigs worth seeing, and Danish trio Andromeda, the winners this year of the prestigious Young Jazz Award hosted at the Jazzhouse, provide an alternative night out on the town. Defined by Christian Pehrson Balvig’s neat piano solos, they offer an elegant insight into Copenhagen’s rich jazz scene.

Walk The Moon Rust; 20:00; 140kr One of Ohio’s up-and-coming pop-rock groups, the quartet have tapped into a new wave of art-rock that’s far reaching and appealing to a broad spectrum of fans. Their upbeat, fancy-free and swirly styled pop-rock is neatly captured in their viral hit, ‘Anna Sun’. Following appearances on MTV, a gig at last year’s SXSW festival and several other high-profile gigs, including an appearance on The David Letterman Show, thousands are now anticipating the band’s gigs in Copenhagen, London, Berlin and Amsterdam throughout July.

’VE BEEN TOLD all my life that patience is a virtue, but usually, by the time I’m done being patient, my hopes are so high for whatever I’m waiting for that I end up horribly disappointed. So, after seven years of waiting to see Billy Talent live and ten hours spent in line outside Vega, it’s understandable that I was a bit apprehensive that the night may not live up to my expectations. I’ve never been happier to be wrong.

Local band Kill The Rooster kicked off the show, barely stopping for breath during their eight-song set. Though their lyrics may have left something to be desired, their musicianship was remarkable. Drummer Leo Mega was the star of the show, pounding out impressive rhythms while singing back-up, with vocalist and guitarist Carsten Hansen and bassist Troels Bak rounding

Danish fans were more than ready to rock out at the band’s first show in Copenhagen since 2007 off the trio. Thirty short minutes later, they ran off the stage, and for the first time, I found myself shocked at how quickly a local opener’s set had passed.

She’s the world’s top-selling female artist in music history, and both her name and seductive image have become synonymous with the pop world. Remaining an unstoppable force in the industry, Madonna’s unique formula for success has led to sold out stadium concerts across the globe.

Marking the release of her twelfth studio album MDNA (2012), Madonna has once again taken to the skies for a global tour of the same name that will visit six continents throughout 2012.

John Hiatt and the Combo Amager Bio; 20:00; 375kr Beginning his solo career in 1974, Hiatt set out to write folk songs. Evidently influenced by Bob Dylan, Tom Waites and Bruce Springsteen – artists that continue to influence his music – his soothing and honest songwriting has led to his reputation as a reliable songwriter with acres of solid releases under his belt. High-profile artists like Iggy Pop, The Neville Brothers and Dr Feelgood have covered a number of his songs. Having remained one of rock music’s best-kept secrets, Hiatt is universally regarded as something of a cult artist.

Then various roadies were clearing the stage and tuning instruments, and finally Billy Talent’s Aaron Solowoniuk was seated behind his drum kit, joined shortly by bassist Jon Gallant and guitarist Ian D’Sa. The audience’s cheers nearly drowned out the opening notes of ‘Devil In A Midnight Mass’, reaching a crescendo as vocalist Ben Kowalewicz finally appeared on stage.

And from that moment, the night passed by in a blur, pausing only when the band left the stage before returning for a three-song encore. Within the first three songs, the band had played one song from each of their albums: the cleverly titled Billy Talent, Billy Talent II and Billy Talent III. While waiting outside Vega, huddled under a tiny roof as rain crashed down, I had worried that not many people would show up for the concert. Again, my worries had been put to rest, and the hall was nearly full by the time Billy Talent took to the stage. After playing the European festival circuit for a few weeks before ending up at this tiny venue, Billy Talent’s stage presence was almost ten times

too big for Lille Vega’s stage, but Danish fans were more than ready to rock out at the band’s first show in Copenhagen since 2007. The crowd was hot, sweaty and loud – all the ingredients necessary for the perfect punk rock concert.

The set list was practically flawless, featuring a selection of hits and fan favourites that kept the screams coming all night. And what better place to play ‘Viking Death March’, the band’s newest song, than in Denmark? After nine fast-paced numbers, the tempo was slowed down for ‘Surrender’, but picked right back up again as the band dove into ‘River Below’, one of their earliest hits about a schizophrenic man who threatens to detonate a bomb.

The night came to an end with ‘Red Flag’. A better song couldn’t have been chosen to make sure that everyone left Lille Vega completely hoarse, and the extra choruses tacked onto the end ensured that by the time I was asking the merchandise seller for a shirt, I could barely muster a whisper.

Django Django Roskilde Festival, Pavilion Stage; 17:00; day-ticket 920kr Arguably the best line-up at this year’s Roskilde breaks out on the opening day. Among the first bands to open for the festival are London-based quartet Django Django. Becoming darlings of the British rock scene practically overnight earlier this year on the back of their intensely addictive single ‘Default’, their combustive blend of spacey Kraftwerk-tasting keyboard beats, combined with unimaginably catchy melodies, are now taking Europe by storm in much the same fashion.

Nightlife Roskilde Festival Pre-party

KB18; Fri 21:00; free adm Roskilde Festival is one of the main highlights on the Danish calendar, and to add the icing to the cake, KB18 is throwing a pre-party in the heart of Vesterbro’s club district, Kødbyen.

This will be, for the sane ones, the last night you’ll experience a warm bed after a hard night of partying before a solid week of warm beers, damp sleeping bags and camp parties become your daily diet. Organisers are still finalising the final details for tonight’s line-up, but you can expect Copenhagen’s finest DJs to turn out for this one.

This is where Rust comes in handy to get you in the mood. Oakland-born rapper Kreayshawn – the hip-hop brain behind the grimy hit ‘Gucci Gucci’ – and a unique cast of budding solo artists, DJs and rappers from Copenhagen putting in the hours – will storm the stage tonight.

Bearing some resemblance to their medium-sized antelope namesake, the band members look dreamy and dopey when they perform. In fact their live shows feel a little voyeuristic, like the crowd is watching a living-room jam session. When they get into their ‘60s-inspired, psychedelic groove, they go a bit nuts, as if there’s no-one there watching. Go and check out the Perth boys out at Lille Vega on October 22. Keeping with the animal theme, Andrew Bird is fluttering to Copenhagen for a show on November 19. From the age of four, the musician began training in the Suzuki method of music – no it’s nothing to do with motorbikes or cars, but more to do with learning music in a positive environment. It must have had some affect on him because Bird plays guitar, violin and glockenspiel brilliantly, not to mention his voice.

But the most interesting sound he makes is with his whistle. Like a bird at dawn, he can whistle melodically for a whole song without drying his lips – it’s a beautiful thing to witness.

And the weird part – Bird is his real name, not just a clever marketing trick so columnists can write puns about feathers etc. He’s performing at Amager Bio, Storkøbenhavn; tickets are 260kr from www.billetlugen.dk.

THERE IS AN Australian slant to this edition of Hot Tickets, not only thanks to the columnist’s nationality, but also due to the high calibre of these musicians from Down Under.

Let’s start with Wouter ‘Wally’ De Backer, a Belgian-Australian singer better known as Goyte. In 2001, the singer-songwriter started out by recording 50 copies of a four-track CD, handwriting the track list and colouring the cover sleeves with crayon. He sent the CDs to every radio station and recording contact he could find in the phone book, and then followed up each one with a phone call. A decade since then, his song ‘Somebody that I used to know’ – the one with body paint in the video clip – has hit the airways the world over. Another Aussie act getting some much-deserved kudos in the northern hemisphere is The Temper Trap, who are slated to rock out Store Vega on September 23. The indie band formed in Melbourne in 2005 when an enthusiastic busker and two guys working in a clothing store got together. And they’ve gone a long way since then – they were nominated for the BRIT award for International Breakthrough Artist last year and sold out two UK tours. Tame Impala see themselves as “a steady flowing psychedelic groove

Another delicious folk offering comes in the form of Swedish musician Jens Lekman. The singer combines delicate guitar and ukulele with some dark, yet amusing lyrics at times.

His song ‘Your Arms Around Me’ portrays Jens slicing an avocado, when his lover walks up behind him, causing him to lose concentration and slice off the tip of his finger. It’s much more delicate than it sounds. He’s playing at Lille Vega on September 12. Tickets are 200kr from www.billetlugen.dk.

HALF THE TOWNS of Denmark claim some kind of festival between June and September. Whether it’s a medieval festival, flower festival, shellfish festival, or an origami festival (okay, I made that one up), they’ve all got something to offer.

Frederiksværk, a small city just over 50 kilometres northwest of Copenhagen, is no exception. They actually host Denmark’s largest chamber music festival: Frederiksværk Music Festival. Both well-established ensembles and the rising stars of Danish music perform every year with 17 concerts spread out over the month of July.

The festival is being held in a building called Gjethuset. Dating from 1767, the building was used as a cannon foundry until 1928, and afterwards for heavy industry until 1976.

Then the building was restored to preserve the history of the town and reopened in 1996 as an art and culture centre with theatre performances, concerts and art exhibitions.

This former foundry is the setting for the entire month of classical concerts including top-name ensembles, as well as the most talented, promising young names on the Danish music scene.

The Leipzig String Quartet will wow audiences on July 16

Since their debut in 1998, the quartet has toured Ireland, Germany, Belgium, Scandinavia, Austria, Croatia, the USA, Iceland, UK, Italy, and Poland, and has taken part in an official state visit to Slovenia with the Danish royal couple. “If you think you can imagine the tone of a wellplayed saxophone without having heard this recording, you should think again,” Politiken newspaper wrote.

Nikolaj Znaider Mon 9 July, 20:00; 150kr “Znaider is one of his generation’s greatest artists,” wrote the respected British magazine Gramophone in 2009. Nikolaj Znaider is both a charismatic violinist and conductor. He has directed the orchestra

of the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, Dresden Staatskapelle and the Russian National Orchestra, and he is the first guest conductor of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra.

Leipzig String Quartet Mon 16 July, 20:00; 15kr This quartet has been described as the true sound of Leipzig, and for this concert it has prepared three pieces for strings by Mendelssohn, Shostakovitch, and Schubert – each full of intense emotion and drama. The quartet was founded in 1988, and three of its members have also held solo positions in the renowned Gewandhaus Orkester in Leipzig. The classical music-focused Strings Magazine praised the quartet’s ability to play Schubert. “Of the highest standard, the interpretation is clear and intense, and the recording itself has the ideal clarity, richness of tone and natural acoustics,” it wrote.

WHEN I FIRST stumbled upon this recipe, I suspected that it was something I would adore. I wanted a mussel recipe and I love mushrooms, so what’s not to like? Turns out, the match between mushrooms and mussels is divine. Even with human error factored in!

While mussels are a rather elegant food item, they’re actually fairly affordable – especially when compared to other seafood. And in hindsight, my decision to not go to a fish market and instead cash in on a special offer at my local supermarket (1.5kg for 35kr) was probably the wrong one.

And then I exacerbated the error by waiting until the ‘fi-

nal day’ to cook them - not a great idea when you’re cooking something that’s still alive. The price I paid was a load of funkysmelling mussels. So you’ve been warned! Seafood is best prepared as fresh as possible.

It truly is a lovely recipe though. And although it requires more work than your average mussel recipe, what took the longest for me was chopping the mushrooms. It’s actually relatively simple and easy.

The recipe serves four and is quite a lot of food. You have the choice of serving the mixture of mushrooms and mussels on top of a bed of arugula or following the recipe and mixing the arugula in. Chives are also optional.

Tucked away behind a hard-to-find door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS

Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a “best ever veal experience”) and the chocolate cake (“Oh My God”), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that you don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that you can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. JH SushiTreat Fox Jarmers Plads 3, Cph V; open Mon-Thu 16:30-22:00, Fri-Sat 16:30-24:00 with Club Treat from 22:00-02:00; 3338 7030 The SushiTreat restaurant at the Hotel Fox serves the best California-style sushi in the city, offers an impressive drinks and wine card, and has a completely unique atmosphere on Friday and Saturday nights when you can order sushi until 2am while listening to some of the city’s best DJs . Mussel Fricasse with Wild Mushrooms and Arugula 470 ml chicken stock 2 kg mussels, scrubbed and debearded 2 tbs finely chopped shallots 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 6 tbs unsalted butter salt and pepper to taste 3 tbs white wine or water ½ kg wild mushrooms, trimmed, cleaned, and cut into 1cm slices 115g baby arugula, tough stems removed 3 tbs chopped chives (optional) BEFORE YOU get started, scrub and debeard the mussels. While doing this, make sure you place them under cold running water. The ones that are not dead will close when covered in cold running water.

In a large pot, bring the chicken stock to a boil. Add the mussels (discard any with cracked shells or that did not close when you scrubbed them), cover,

and let steam for six to seven minutes, until most of the shells have opened; discard any that did not open. Remove the mussels from the shells and place them in a serving bowl. Mix in the shallots and garlic while the mussels are still hot. Let cool.

Meanwhile, boil the mussel broth for about ten minutes, or until reduced to approximately 240ml. Turn off the heat. Whisk in four tablespoons of the butter (make sure to use unsalted butter, otherwise it will be insanely salty).

Do not allow the sauce to boil again.

Season with salt and pepper.

Combine the remaining two tablespoons butter and the white wine in a medium saucepan and heat over medium-low heat. Add the mushrooms and cook for six to seven minutes. Stir the mushrooms and broth into the mussels. Stir in the arugula, sprinkle with the chives, and serve.

Serve with lots of bread, or small baked potatoes, to absorb the juices.

On our visit our favourites were the Dim Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. The main courses are substantial, honestly cooked and rich in taste and include Vienna schnitzel with baked new potatoes and coleslaw and chicken breast topped with apricots and cheese. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. From the fish and chip expat family nights at 17:00 on the last Friday of every month, to enjoying the Sunday roast (lamb, all the trimmings, just 99kr, kids portion for 58kr), they are always welcome. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day - serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, and upstairs there’s a new lounge area, which is the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. AK Kennedy’s Irish Bar Gammel Kongevej 23, 1610 Cph V; Open Mon-Sun 12:0002:00 It’s not an Irish pub. Instead it’s a pub owned by Irishmen, and there’s a big difference. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits.

Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH

It’s the perfect place for sports fans to mingle, or for live music which it provides every day. It also serves food all day from 10am to 10pm, and diners can find peace from the music and sport on a table overlooking the walking street, or on the first floor balcony overlooking Amagertorv. BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. From Croatia with love, a buffet you won’t balk at When you first enter Hercegovina, the thing that really strikes you, besides the fantastic smell of slow-cooked meat, is the atmosphere. The smiling staff are dressed in traditional costume, the walls are covered with mementos, and you feel like you’ve just walked into a family’s home.

Taking centre stage in Hercegovina is the giant stove-top that greets you as you come through the door. As you watch the pork gently rotating on the spit, next to generous portions of scrumptiously slow cooked meat, homemade bread, and other delicious side dishes, you’ll be tempted to just pull up a chair and soak in the cosy atmosphere.

Located a few metres from the Tivoli entrance (enter either via the street of from the amusement park), it is a great place for patrons to enjoy the wonderful views of the lights and flowers or dine in the restaurant’s open air backyard.

For over 25 years, this Copenhagen staple has been serving great food at really affordable prices. When dining at Hecegovina the options are endless, so make sure to head there on an empty stomach.

Those wishing to try a bit of everything should check out their lunch and dinner buffets, which are varied and plentiful. The dinner buffet in particular will have carnivores sweating with excitement when they see the grilled pork and chicken, pork on the spit, sausages, casseroles, and much more on offer.

Hercegovina also has an à la carte menu available – which is great for those who prefer a more traditional style of dining. Two of the appetisers from the à la carte menu came highly recommended by restaurant manager Maria Lukac.

The first was a heavenly Hungarian goulash soup with beef, vegetables, red wine and spices. The meat almost melted in the mouth, and it was so good that I’ve told my goulash-loving father in Australia that if he comes to Copenhagen for nothing else, he should come for Hercegovina’s goulash. Both my companion and I were so impressed that we practically licked our bowls clean.

Scared that it couldn’t get any better than that, we moved onto a Brixtoftestyle marinated salmon with home-made lime sauce. My companion was blown away by the freshness of the salmon and the flavours of the lime sauce.

For our main courses we had two dishes, both from the à la carte menu. To begin we enjoyed a juicy tenderloin steak, served with a Vinjak (Croatian brandy)

With its spit and its belly dancers, Hercegovina knows how to make an impression on its customers that they will never forget

sauce, a giant oven-baked potato and green salad. The steak was flavourful and cooked to perfection, whilst the brandy sauce with four different types of pepper was so good you’ll want to drink it.

The second dish was a great-looking and ample mixed-meat skewer. It had pieces of pork, chicken, homemade pork sausage, beef, onion and pepper. It was served with baked and then lightly fried potatoes and a slow-cooked paprika sauce.

The meats had a wonderful barbeque taste and overall were moist and tasty. The

real winner, however, was the homemade pork sausage that really packed a punch. I could easily have eaten ten more of them (could have done had I opted for the buffet). The potatoes were crunchy and felt a bit like a naughty treat, while the homemade paprika sauce was delicate and the perfect accompaniment for the meats.

Throughout the meal we enjoyed a soft but full-bodied ‘Vranac Plantaze’ from the Montenegro region in the Balkans.

If your pants haven’t burst by this stage, I would recommend the pancakes flambéed in Kruškovac (Croatian pear

liquor) liquor, served with vanilla ice cream and flakes of almond. Every bite was like a sweet piece of heaven in your mouth.

Hercegovina really is about more than just great food. It is a complete dining experience with various food options, free music (sometimes with belly dancers) and entertainment every day, and high quality friendly service, all within beautiful surroundings. So for the restaurant that has it all, it’s got to be Hercegovina.

Fourth instalment of franchise a cold-hearted affair KASPER R GULDBERG

HEN THE first instalment in the Ice Age franchise hit cinemas worldwide in 2002 it was the then-third-best opening ever for an animated film. What’s more, the new film from the Fox-owned Blue Sky Studios even won the hearts of most critics, which is impressive considering the competition from Pixar and DreamWorks. Seven years later, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs became the fourth highest grossing animated film of all time – amazing for a threequel.

So much as I regret having wasted 94 minutes of perfectly good summertime on Continental Drift (and some of those jokes literally made me groan), I guess from a purely economic viewpoint a fourth instalment was inevitable.

The action is catalysed by the series mascot Scrat (a sabre-toothed squirrel screeched by Chris Wedge) gently positioning one of his prized acorns on the packed ice in some Arctic region.

The result of this: a seismic shift that causes the prehistoric supercontinent Pangea to break violently apart. And when Scrat plummets to the core of the Earth and ricochets around there like a pin-ball causing would-be hilarious havoc 4,000 miles above, I was powerfully reminded of Cartoon Network at its most putrid and retarded.

Anyway, the Earth breaks apart, recognisable continents are formed, but the woolly mammoth Manny (Ra-

How cool is that?” mona) gets separated from his mate (Queen Latifah) and their now-teenage daughter Peaches (Keke Palmer). Picture drifting clunks of ice and animal ‘hands’ stretched helplessly out to grab imperilled loved ones. Well, all to no avail. Manny ends up on the open sea with a heavy heart and a few familiar faces: the sabre-toothed tiger Diego (Leary), the sloth Sid (Leguizamo) and Sid’s truly obnoxious (not funny obnoxious) granny (Sykes). Plans are made, the prospects are grim, plot tension is established, but from a screenwriting perspective, Sid and his granny impede the film’s action and charm by

being so flipping unbelievable (and remember, this is a cartoon). It’s an odd child who would prefer Sid to such comparable nitwit characters as DreamWorks’ Donkey (from Shrek) or Pixar’s Mater (Cars). One difference is that Sid is simply too stupid to have human feelings. Not even Fox’s Homer Simpson is that vulgarly caricatured.

When all looks bleak for the marooned mammals, along comes a pirate ship led by a vicious and sadistic orangutan, Captain Gutt (masterly voiced

by Dinklage). As in most children’s stories, Gutt and his evil band of villains mainly serve as a foil through which we

view the ingenuity, courage and morality of the good guys. The pirate aspect is tired and formulaic all the way down to it involving one misled but beautiful fmale marauder (Lopez), a feline femme fatale and love interest for Diego as it turns out. Unsurprisingly, this proud and cold tigress must be convinced of her wrongs and persuaded to betray her cohorts, who by the same token must be outsmarted by means of admirable virtues. Okay, the animation work is quite vivid and the sight gags keep coming but it’s a yawner from the first “Ship Ahoy”.

One plus, however, is that not all

the action revolves around the showdown between Gutt and Manny. Back on land, young Peaches is discovering the lessons of integrity, loyalty, and friendship while, at some cost, earning her place in a high-school-ish chick clique existing around the mammoth hunk Ethan (voiced by Audrey Drake Graham). I’m not saying it’s very original, but at least this angle provides some opportunity for exploring themes incompatible with piracy. And yet for this reviewer, diversity and humour were hugely defeated by triteness and unremedied lack of heart.

ROM THE off, the film is comprised of beautiful images. Most shots are made from natural light and resemble a painting by Vermeer or similar.

All the more powerful then when a moment of extreme tension or violence smashes through the serenity of these carefully composed frames. This happens in-

creasingly over the course of the narrative.

We follow the titular character Martha (brilliantly underplayed by debutant Olsen) on a two-pronged journey. The first follows her escape from a rural community situated somewhere in the wilds of North America, and her subsequent re-integration back into her old life. The second is her brainwashing initiation into said cult, told in flashback (of note are the particularly well thought-out transitions between the two time-lines). We learn her only family is an older sister (Paulson) who, following her recent marriage to stiff Brit Ted (Dancy), is looking to start a family of her own. Her sister feels

great pressure to provide sanctuary for her disturbed younger sibling, while her husband is less enthusiastic about Martha’s presence in the house – not least because behavioural norms from the cult appear quite alien to the couple. Slowly we piece together Martha’s history.

The juxtaposition of timelines allows us to compare Martha’s experience of the cult with that of her sister’s marital home.

What’s more striking than the differences are the similarities.

Both seek to modify her in some way, be it by drugs or with numerous rules and rituals. Both seek to open her up to them and essentially ‘possess’ her. It’s clear that while the cult leader

(John Hawkes in a wonderfully nuanced performance) exploits Martha’s vulnerabilities by proclaiming her to be his favourite, she is not loved or respected in either of these homes. The familiarity of one place versus the peculiarity of the other serves to question the level of manipulation we all tolerate in our everyday lives.

The claustrophobic menace of this debut by writer/director Durkin stands comparison of Michael Haneke’s Funny Games, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Dogtooth and the recent We Need To Talk About Kevin from Lynne Ramsy.

It should come to be regarded as a cult film in every sense.

But unfortunately, this overlong retelling of a Grimm fairy tale is short on magic. MH

Dir: Brillante Mendoza; UK/Fra/Ger/Fhi drama, 2012, 120 mins; Isabelle Huppert, Mercedes Cabral, Maria Isabel Lopez The film drew a lot of fire from the press as it was rejected by both Cannes and Venice, which created a somewhat toxic whiff.

After all, Cannes built Mendoza’s reputation with his win for Kinatay, so how bad could his first decently budgeted film be? Well, not half as bad as expected. MH

Genuinely funny moments are too few, and almost all of those aren’t politicised. MW

Dir: Ridley Scott; US sci-fi, 2012, 126 mins; Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Idres Elba, Guy Pearce There are some decent moments of horror and tension. There are also planet-sized plot holes and moments of ham-fisted stupidity.

With the recent announcement that Ridley is returning to that other sci-fi masterpiece, Blade Runner, there’s a sense that in his twilight years he’s riding the coattails of his past success. MW

You know what to expect, so you can’t claim to be disappointed by it. It’s a romantic drama, so don’t expect fireworks. DC

Men in Black III (11) Dir: Barry Sonnenfeld; US action, 2012, 105 mins; Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Jemaine Clement It’s a light, fun sci-fiadventure, with perhaps a slightly darker overture than the previous films, MiB3 is worth seeing in a theatre – if for nothing else the roar of the Apollo rocket that rumbles your chest, and the 3D which is one of the better that I have encountered. Dir: Lasse Hallström; UK dramedy, 2011, 107 mins; Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt, Kristin Scott Thomas They don’t really make movies like Salmon Fishing in the Yemen anymore, but when they did in the 90s, it was Hallström who made them, and in that way the movie feels like a pleasant throwback. MH

Wuthering Heights (15) Dir: Andrea Arnold; UK drama, 2011, 129 mins; Kaya Scodelario, James Howson, Oliver Milburn Based on the classic novel by Emily Brontë, this adaption of Wuthering Heights is one of the most impressive costume dramas of the year. MH

Get the Gringo (15) Dir: Adrian Grunberg; US action, 2012, 96 mins; Mel Gibson, Peter Stormare, Dean Norris Mel Gibson finds new life in a Mexican jail after getting caught with $4 million dollars of mobster money. Not an easy place for an outsider, unless it’s with the help of someone who knows the ropes – a 10-year-old kid.

It’s both cheesy and striking, corny and bold, dismissible and yet strangely appealing. MH

Wonders of the Universe DRHD, Thu 20:00

THE BEST history can make the worst dramas. Look at this lot: Caligula, Henry VIII, Columbus, Pearl Harbour and the Crusades. Each of them a fascinating period of history, but on screen: turgid.

And you can add The Borgias to that list. The 1981 TV series bombed, and so does the 2011 version. It’s got adultery, rape, incest and murder, and yet it’s so dull. It even makes The Tudors look good.

“With writing and directing by Neil Jordan and [Jeremy] Irons in the lead, it has pedigree and promise,” noted Time. “And yet The Borgias, besides the glaring Tudors parallels, is one of those shows that seems like it might actually be better if it were worse.” To be fair, not all the reviews have been bad, and it has 7.9 on IMDB and 66 on Metacritic.

In contrast, the praise for Wonders of the Universe has been universal. Presented by science’s poster boy Brian Cox, according to the Independent it is “big on cosmic dazzlement and mind-boggling perspectives and full of epic orchestration and screen-saver graphics”.

Then again Creationist Monthly thought it was “utter tosh”.

Among the other docs worth checking out are Pearl Jam Twenty (SV1, Sat 23:10), an acclaimed homage made by Almost Famous director Cameron Crowe; Paris – The Luminous Years (DRK, Tue 20:00), the documentary version of Midnight in Paris; Go Back to Where You Came From (SV2, Tue 20:00), which see journos pretending to be immigrants in Australia with alarming, if not predictable

results; while Citizen USA: A 50 State Road Trip (SV2, Wed 18:00) looks at the same issue from the viewpoint of new US citizens.

Elsewhere, Immodesty Blaize: Burlesque Undressed (DRK, Sat 23:15) is rather gratuitous; Nuclear Sharks (DR2, Tue 17:55) offers an interesting take on the Cold War; there’s another chance to see UK DRHD, Thu 20:00 Wonders of the Universe series Friday Night Dinner (SV1, Sun 22:50) and Luther (BBC Ent, Sun 20:00); there’s new seasons of Mad Dogs (SV1, Wed 21:30) and the UK version of Undercover Boss (SV1, Wed 22:50); and in preparation for the Olympics, The 100 Metres - Gold in Seconds (BBC World, Sat 16:10 or Sun 22:10) looks at how some spend a lifetime preparing for just one ten-second moment.
