I LOVE YOU Guy Fawkes. Always have, always will. Your timing was impeccable. Sure, it wasn’t spot on when you got caught red-handed underneath the British parliament guarding 36 barrels of gunpowder. I’m not sure they would have gone anywhere. But at least you had the good sense to try and blow it up on November 5. A cold day. Are you listening to me Denmark: a big fire on a cold day, not in the middle of summer (see G2 for a choice of venues to celebrate this Saturday’s Sankt Hans Aften).

Or so I thought. Turns out we got lucky in Britain as Fawkes and his conspirators had to push back their plans after the opening of parliament got postponed due to an outbreak of plague. The original detonation date was July 20 – how utterly selfish of them.

But his capture and disembowelment was our blessing. November is a decidedly chilly month in which the prospect of being flayed alive by a raging inferno is

A nice warm fire: normally the last thing you need in June

actually quite appealing. Then again, nobody’s forcing you to go as close to the fire as is humanly possible (like they used to at my school).

In Denmark, it’s all very civilised: a step forward for a country that only lynched its last witch in 1897. These days she isn’t even killed, but dispatched to Germany to attend a convention. And there are patriotic songs, often with hundreds of verses.

So, while we’ve provided you with a list of venues to mark the occasion, the best places to sample the hygge of the evening are the private communal gardens, small villages etc. Start dropping hints to your Danish colleagues about the lack of decent parties in your neighbourhood. But if you are caught gate-crashing, you’re on your own.

Elsewhere this week, venture outside the city into darkest Zealand to the Dark Ages where you have a choice between Viking Days in Frederikksund (see G9) or the Esrum Medieval Market (G8).

There will no doubt be horses involved, but no thoroughbreds as they’ll all be attending the Danish Derby meeting (see G3).

All in all, it promises to be a cracking weekend. Just don’t lose your head like Sankt Hans or poor old Guy.

IN MEDIEVAL times, wise men and women would spend Sankt Hans Aften gathering herbs for the next year. Until 1770, it was an official holiday. Today, it’s another excuse to drink and have barbecues around a bonfire in a country where the beer doesn’t seem to stop flowing. And since this year, 23 June is a Saturday, there’s really no excuse not to take advantage of one of the many gatherings around Copenhagen.

Whether you choose to head down to a beach with a group of friends or to join in at a larger get-together, you’ll have a great time singing hymns and watching the symbolic witch burning.

Incorporating stand-up comedy, magic, drag queens, sketches, opera and music medleys, this will be a fun variety show, whether you take advantage of the free bar or not.

Most of the acts are in Danish, but the cheesy pop hits are in a language everyone can understand. EB

The speech will be in Danish, but what better time to practice your Danish skills than on the longest day of the year?

Over the course of a full year, production company Dadadans collected quotes, thoughts and tales from Danes for whom the memory of some personal mistake was presumably so awkward and haunting that sharing and confessing it seemed an appealing move. It provided the inspiration for a depiction of gaffes, pratfalls, and other involuntary acts of self-humiliation.

Tivoli Pantomime Theatre

Tivoli, Vesterbrogade 3, Cph V; free after entry to Tivoli Tivoli’s pantomime series follows the adventures of Cassander, who lives alone with his beautiful daughter, Columbine, in old Copenhagen. Cassander’s servant, Pierrot, is a clown. Cassander’s adversary is Harlequin, a charming, masked bandit with empty pockets who loves Columbine and knows many wizards and fairies.

The Unfortunate Suitor

ends 26 Aug Magic is involved when Cassander tries to marry Columbine off to a man who isn’t Harlequin.

Pierrot’s Misfortunes

ends 5 Sep Cassander has chosen yet another suitor or Columbine, this time an old, wealthy man. While Harlequin is enlisting the help of a fairy, Pierrot is making life at home very difficult with his antics.

Harlequin Skeleton

Aug 21-Sep 19 Working as a waiter is not the best way to win Columbine’s hand, so Harlequin seeks advice.

After a complicated plan involving doctors and dressing up as a skeleton, the curtain falls when the two lovers are reunited with the help of an adventure fairy.

Derby Day

Since 1780, Epsom Downs has hosted the original Derby (pronounced ‘dah-bee’), inspiring a host of great races around the world, including the Kentucky Derby (pronounced ‘der-bee’).

Denmark is no exception and on 24 June 2012, Klampenborg Racetrack is the place to be.

Danish Derby Day is one of the highlights of the summer social calendar, with all the pomp and circumstance you would expect of such an auspicious occasion. It is not just for hobnobbing with the horsey elite, but a cultural celebration where elegant summer dresses and flamboyant hats mix with the outrageously colourful costumes of the jockeys and the sheer thrill of a day at the races.

Exhibitions

There are 12 races in all, with the gates opening at 10:00.

A horse only has one chance to win the blue ribbon event, The Derby, as it is for three-yearolds only. For the 2013 Derby there are already 141 horses registered in a field that will be whittled down to the traditional 15 horses. Owners and trainers have spent years preparing for this event trying to breed the perfect galloping full-blooded superhorse – one that can career around racetracks at speeds of up to 65 km/hour.

The devoted Derby-goers will have already been at Klampenborg for the traditional ‘Morning Gallop’ on Monday at 07:00 to cast an eye over potential dark horses in the field before witnessing the allimportant draw in the Paddock restaurant. On the day itself, the sharp-eyed punters will be watching the contenders parade in the paddock, while hoping to get some last-minute information straight from the horse’s mouth.

Fancy a flutter on the ‘mane’ attraction? Well, the football fan can have a bet on Cassano or Puyol; the more literary-inclined will be prejudiced towards Darcy; kids can invest their pocket money (via their parents, as you need to 18 to bet) in the equine version of

Buzz Lightyear; Irish gamblers will be interested to know that Desert King, the winner of the 1997 Irish Derby, is the grandfather of The Kicker – or they’ll simply back Irish jockey Eddie Ahern, who will be cracking the whip on Khan. Back in 1965, a 10 kroner bet on Fonseca saw you stuff your wallet and hoof it home with 730kr winnings, whereas Peas and Carrots’ victory in 2006 yeilded a measly 14 kroner after it won at odds

of 1.4. For those keeping a tight rein on their money, 10 kroner is the minimum bet at the Tote.

On Derby Day, Klampenborg Racetrack expects to pay out more than 2 million kroner in winnings.

It’s a day to spoil yourself so why not try a Derby platter at a reasonably priced 265 kroner in the Kongelige restaurant.

Duval Leroy champagne will be

served at the Champagne Bar in front of the beautiful Royal tribune building, a lovingly restored building dating back to 1906. Your own wicker picnic basket can be enjoyed in the grassy area by the playground.

No Derby Day would be complete without the presence of weird, wonderful and just plain silly hats. The annual hat competition will be an interesting sideshow with prizes awarded at the Kongelogen in front

of the restaurant. For the young ones, there is a playground and the chance to test out aspiring jockey potential with pony rides and other entertainment.

Don’t hold your horses – this is a surefire tip for a fantastic and affordable day out with good food, drink and excitement in a glorious setting and in the company of up to 8,000 dressed-to-impress Klampenborg race-goers.

It is always available for public viewing because the audience stands outside the window. This exhibition features work by Danish artist Thorbjørn Reuter Christiansen.

The artist’s work will be shown in the context of an ongoing investigation into gentrification efforts in Vesterbro, formerly home to the Carlsberg factory. BF

Vo was inspired to replicate the iconic Statue of Liberty, created as a gift for the United States

by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi in 1886. Vo and helpers in Taiwan fabricated an exact copy of the 45-metre high statue that famously stands in New York City Harbour. BF

Camera-less photography, from photogram to cyanotype, offers artists an alternative medium in which to create their artwork.

These unusual methods of making photographic prints produce organic shapes and forms, creating unexpected imagery. BF

Fifteen Danish architectural firms are represented, including the popular firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), along with COBE, which recently won and architecture prize, and NORD Architects, among others. Visitors will be able to walk in and around the models, experiencing the architectural process in a new and different way. The exhibition includes film, sound, and images in addition to the models. OME BANDS are studio bands, utilising all of the available technology to craft a polished sound. Some bands are live bands, thriving off spontaneity and energy to jam and improvise.

My Morning Jacket is definitely the latter. The Louisville, Kentucky quintet’s Southern-fried rock screams out for a live setting, and MMJ have made a name for themselves as one of the best touring rock bands out there.

Formed in 1998, My Morning

Jacket have six full-length albums, three live albums, an assortment of EPs and various side projects under their belts.

Their latest release, 2011’s Circuital, was a welcome return to form from the band following the mixed bag that was 2008’s Evil Urges. With the exception of the out-of-leftfield ‘Holding on to Black Metal’, Circuital largely harkens back to the band’s nadir reached with the releases of 2003’s It Still Moves and 2005’s Z. My Morning Jacket’s reputation as a top live band was cemented with a nearly legendary appearance at the 2008 Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee. Taking the stage at midnight, the band played for nearly four hours, churning out 35 songs. Among them were covers as diverse as Erykah Badu’s

‘Tyrone’ and Mötley Crüe’s ‘Home Sweet Home’. The band has also performed memorable versions of Willie Nelson’s ‘Always on My Mind’, Danzig’s ‘How The Gods Kill’, Black Sabbath’s ‘Fairies Wear Boots’ and the Commodores’ ‘Easy’, among others. And with lead singer Jim James’s participation in the folk ‘supergroup’ Monsters of Folk, it’s not out of the question that some of those songs – along with selections from James’s solo George Harrison tribute EP – might get the full MMJ treatment live as well.

But it’s MMJ’s own material that shines through the best at live concerts, with the band improvising and expanding on their tunes. Upon the release of Circuital, respected music blog Antiquiet said the album would serve to “re-

stock their live arsenal” with a collection of songs that were tailor-made for the band to “flesh out ... and help them reach their full potential”.

With the newer songs added to an arsenal of older favourites like ‘One Big Holiday’, ‘Dondante’ and ‘Magheetah’, the Kentuckians are bound to temporarily give Vega a down home Southern feel.

Throughout their career, My Morning Jacket have garnered comparisons to legendary acts like Lynyrd Skynard, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, and the Grateful Dead. But with horns, keyboards and pedal steel guitar added to their traditional rock sound – led by the haunting and distinctive voice of James – MMJ have a sound all of their own.

And despite those lofty compari-

sons, MMJ don’t carry the air of pretentious rock stars. After all, how many ‘serious’ rock bands would enter talks to perform live as The Electric Mayhem, the fictional band from The Muppet Show? Although those plans were ultimately scuppered by the Walt Disney Company, leading James to bemoan his lost chance for “Muppet glory”, two Muppet-bound songs, ‘Wonderful’ and ‘Outta My System’, made their way onto Circuital.

With a solid discography, a reputation as one of the best live performers around, comparisons to some of rock’s greats, and a love for singing puppets, MMJ will provide an evening of good old fashioned Southern rock ‘n’ roll.

ometimes it seems like everyone in Brooklyn is in a band. So it can often take something special for a record to stand out amidst all the acts making experimental electro. But that’s exactly what Bear in Heaven did with 2009’s Beast Rest Forth Mouth.

With a new album under their arm, the band was back in a half-filled Lille Vega, but unfortunately, they didn’t meet your erstwhile reporter’s expectations.

They performed a set mainly composed of tracks from their critically acclaimed third full-length album, I Love You, It’s Cool. “We’re gonna play a bunch of new songs,” frontman Jon Philpot said. That turned out to be a good choice, as most of the crowd didn’t seem to be familiar with their older songs.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre Amager Bio; 21:00; 225kr The psychedelic rock outfit was formed in 1990 on America’s West Coast to pay tribute to The Rolling Stones. Also heavily influenced by acts like Jefferson Airplane, Hawkwind, Velvet Underground and Robert Plant, and characterised by a fascination with Eastern cultures and music, their distinctly slow-evolving style of space rock gained a cult following over the years. Currently touring to promote their 13th studio album, classic rock fans will turn out and be transported back to the halcyon days of psychedelic rock.

It took them some quite some time to warm up – I realised I’d been looking at someone’s bald patch for over five minutes and was thinking about the laundry and dishes I still had to do when I got home (I sound like a middle-aged housewife). But, after three songs, Philpot took on the persona of a cheesy Greek pop singer and danced the night away. Backed by tall tubes of flashing lights, Philpot and bassist Adam Wills took every opportunity they had to dance around the stage.

Opener ‘Idle Heart’ dictated the tone, and a few members of the crowd swayed to the seductive groove of its chorus. Some people took up Philpot’s offer to “dance with me!” at the climax of ‘The Reflection of You’, although the crowd never fully let themselves go. The band, however, enjoyed it nonetheless. “You’re an amazing crowd,” he chanted. “Did we mention how much we love Denmark? Did we mention how much we love Copenhagen?”

They take playing music seriously, and they love doing it, and that joy is apparent in their performance. Highlights

Billy Talent Lille Vega; 21:00; 185kr Starting out in the early ‘90s, the Toronto-based punkrock outfit made their breakthrough with their self-titled debut record in 2003 that featured the hit ‘River Below’, now regarded as a punk-rock anthem. Having since slowed down with no majorly interesting material released until last month’s Viking Death March, the fresh-faced fourpiece are heavily reliant on their back-catalogue. Tunes like ‘Red Flag’, ‘Fallen Leaves’ and ‘Try Honesty’ are major attractions, drawing fans to their gigs.

Billy Cross Cafe Nemoland; 21:30; free adm Born and bred in New York, the American guitarist and producer opted for a Scandinavian way of life, migrating to Copenhagen in the early ‘80s. Perhaps his biggest claim to fame was his partnership with Bob Dylan and his band in the late ‘70s, playing a significant part in the recording of the live LP Bob Dylan at Budokan (1978). Tonight, Cross will play songs taken from his most recent record, The Dream Hasn’t Changed (2012), a contemplative selection of folk-rock songs that draw on his memoirs, his journeys across the great Atlantic and his experiences in the studio.

Their type of music is hard to describe – it’s a mix of indie, rock, synth, dance and electro. What I can accurately describe is that they are a good live band, but while their music sounded better live than recorded, this show in a halffilled Lille Vega simply didn’t live up to their standards.

Now at the peak of his career, Snoop Dogg’s rude raps continue to sell millions, and R‘n’B fans from across Scandinavia will flood Vega this Wednesday. Was this a memorable show that will keep people clamouring until their next album? Probably not.

Now a balance between poetic one-liners and interludes of atmospheric instrumentation, their heavy-bodied music fits the bill for Radiohead, who they’ll be supporting in North America this year.

“Gentleman is closing,” the faceless voice continues. Filled with the revived sense of importance following in the wake of Closing Time, I throw down my cigar and rush inside. Gentleman is brilliant.

In a wildfire of top hat, chest hair, laces and ejaculating magnum champagne, he spellbinds the crowd firmly to the moment. Everyone is moved, no-one can move. Only shout, whistle, clap and stomp the floors in mad ecstasy. That was a moment!

Aaahh, there’s nothing like reminiscing about Last Weekend’s madness to put things into perspective. I wash down my diarrhoea-coffee, jump barefoot into my sneaks, type “G-E-N-T-L-E-M-A-N!” in a private message to the auto-erect Facebook guru, and rush out the door humming lines from Cohen’s ‘Closing Time’: “And I just don’t care what happens next/ Looks like freedom but it feels like death/ It’s something in between, I guess/It’s Closing Time.”

Last Weekend is the new Now I SHOULD HAVE never confirmed him as a friend on Facebook. Ever since I started just blindly confirming ‘friend requests’, my news-feed has been clogging up with various nauseating posts: cute cats, babies and wired comments consisting mainly of oddly-produced ‘hearts’ and ‘sprinkles’. Worst of all, though, are the self-proclaimed gurus barfing their semi-digested eastern wisdom onto my morning coffee.

“Worries live in the future, regrets in the past; if you stay in this moment you will be happy,” one of them writes. Well actually this moment sucks: I was almost out of coffee so I’ve brewed this cup from the absolute last remains of the bag – I’m basically drinking lukewarm, light-brown water. Forgot to buy bread as well so I’m eating jam from the jar with a spoon (okay, not that bad), and I haven’t done the laundry for weeks so I have to put on ‘crunchy’ socks and a stinky shirt – no dude, I will not be happier “in this moment”. Actually I’ll just skip it. Instead of taking a deep breath and feeling the power of the ‘Now’, I’ll take a deep breath and feel the power of ‘Last Weekend’ instead. Forget this moment for a moment. Reminisce.

The night is warm and I’m wearing black. A small crowd is gathered in an even smaller enclosure in front of the entrance to Warehouse 9, the legendary queer oasis of Copenhagen. Bashing eyelashes, voluptuous forms and tight corsets are enjoying each other, and what appears to be an endless amount of cava and joints. I sail into the eternal ‘now’ on a raft of alcohol. THE FREDIKSSUND Viking Festival is here once again to celebrate ancient Nordic culture and folklore. A series of events will be held in the Danish town of Frederikssund to commemorate Viking culture and traditions and its glorious ancient past. During these two-week celebrations, people from across the continent visit the town to participate and dress up in traditional Viking attire to take a journey back in time.

So here is a precious chance to relive the glorious lives of the Vikings, both the farmers and artisans, as well as the fearsome explorers.

I’VE ALWAYS said that in my house sport isn’t just something to enjoy, it’s a religion, a way of life. Having grown up in Australia, a sport-obsessed nation, we are always fond of trying to pair sporting events with food.

Now that I’m living here, I’ve been missing these special sportinspired foods, but with so much sport going on this summer – especially the London Olympics – now is the time to start up this tradition again.

When I think of sport-watching foods, many things come to mind: fries, beer-battered fish, hotdogs, hamburgers and meat pies to name a few. These foods tend to be a bit naughty, but that’s half the fun of enjoying them in

front of the television with an icy cold beer in hand.

The number-one sporting food in Australia would have to be the iconic meat pie, which has more than once been described as Australia’s national dish. This sporting staple hasn’t really gained popularity in Denmark yet, but I’m convinced that once the Danes learn it’s easy and that you can eat it with one hand, it’ll become a hit this summer.

The classic Australian meat pie is similar to the UK’s steak pie, but instead it usually contains largely diced or minced meat and gravy, and must always be served with tomato sauce (that’s ketchup in every other country in the world).

Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through.

Tucked away behind a hard-to-find door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS

Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a “best ever veal experience”) and the chocolate cake (“Oh My God”), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that you don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that you can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. Mix corn flour and 1 tablespoon of beef stock to form a paste, and add the remaining stock. Add stock, sauces, and Vegemite if you have it, to the cooked mince. Bring everything to the boil and simmer for 8 minutes or until the mixture is thick. Remember to let the mixture cool before placing it in the pie pans.

Preheat oven to 220°C and place a baking tray in the oven.

Then grease 4 x 8cm (base measurement) pie pans.

Cut 4 x 15cm circles from the shortcrust pastry. Use this to line the bases and sides of the pans. Fill the pans with the cooled mince.

Brush rims with water. Cut 4 x 15cm circles from the puff pastry.

Place over meat then press to seal, trim and brush with egg.

Place the pies on the hot tray.

Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden. Serve with tomato sauce.

There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. From the fish and chip expat family nights at 17:00 on the last Friday of every month, to enjoying the Sunday roast (lamb, all the trimmings, just 99kr, kids portion for 58kr), they are always welcome. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day - serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, and upstairs there’s a new lounge area, which is the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH

It’s the perfect place for sports fans to mingle, or for live music which it provides every day. BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. Seafood doesn’t have to be for snobs.

At Oysters & Grill there are no crab mallets, no oyster forks, and no confusing seafood cutlery designed by the establishment to dissuade commoners from tasting the delicious fruits of the sea. At Oysters & Grill, where the philosophy is that the finest ingredients can be enjoyed by all, you will get one set of eating implements – a knife and a fork – and your hands of course. Located in the heart of hip Nørrebro, this restaurant proves there are more than enough delectable crustaceans to go around, no matter what the size of your pay packet. And if you don’t want to get your hands slimy extracting glistening prawn meat, you don’t have to – salvation is served in the form of a juicy steak.

The atmosphere was cosy and relaxed thanks to homely flourishes like a back wall constructed from chopped wooden logs.

Another quaint detail was the lampshades – essentially a selection of upside-down vases covering naked light bulbs. And I whispered a quiet sigh of relief when I saw the plastic tablecloths. Anything that involves seafood is bound to get messy. They might sound a bit kitsch, but they were both practical and festive. The red, green and yellow floral patterns gave the impression we were eating fresh seafood on a beach somewhere.

The waiters’ French-inspired white t-shirts, with thin blue and red stripes, tied in nicely with the décor and the menu card.

Oysters and bubbles seemed an appropriate way to begin the evening. The Danish oysters were unavailable, as they are busy ovulating at the moment, so we took a dozen French instead. The oysters were incredibly fresh and a splash of lemon juice and a drizzle of a finely chopped onion salsa brought them bursting to life. They were suitably partnered by a glass of Casa Mariol, NV Cava 18 Mesos.

For the main course, there are two ways to go at Oysters & Grill. Diners can either share a selection of seafood dishes, or order one of four individual main courses – three of which are meat for the carnivores among us. My dining partner tried the Mullet a la plancha, which was served with pommes allumettes, salad and herb butter, while I stuck with the Seafood platter option. Our waiter was very helpful with our selections, guiding us on how much of each dish we needed to order – the prices are determined per 100g. He suggested the 2009 Domain Binner, Alsace Riesling as a complementary drop. The wine had subtle hints of kerosene and caramel and tasted delightful with the seafood, which was brought out at regular intervals.

And boy, what a feast it was. The razor shells were delicious and tender, and the rich buttery tasting scallops melted in our mouths. The scallops were served with a roasted half lemon that we eagerly squeezed on top. Most of the seafood was lightly stirfried and finished simply with blended fresh parsley, lemon and olive oil added at the last minute. The marinade was fresh and summery and let the seafood speak for itself. A definite highlight were the langoustines. They were huge, but their flesh was so sweet and succulent that they didn’t stay on the table for long. The mixed platter

of deep-fried soft-shell crab, scallops and prawns was incredibly indulgent, while the vegetable crudités were a welcome change of pace when the orgy of seafood became too overwhelming. I appreciated the way our waiter surreptitiously brought us extra refresher towels when our hands started to look a bit greasy.

Like always, there was room for dessert. I chose the Lemon panna cotta with vanilla ice cream and crispy meringue. The contrasting flavours and textures worked well – the tangy lemon contrasted beautifully against the creamy vanilla, while the

crisp meringue added some crunch to the smooth panna cotta. My dining partner went for an old classic: Strawberries and cream. Both desserts were served in charming glass jars with glass lids. To drink, we had a glass of Baronazzo Amalfi 2010 Moscato from Sicily, which was velvety and sweet, but not too sickly.

AVE WE lost another great or is Cronenberg merely taking time out to make his ‘straight stories’? Perhaps it is inevitable that for someone of Cronenberg’s calibre, the choice of a new direction is bound to lead to the mainstream – there aren’t that many directions after all – and one can only wonder whether A Dangerous Method, along with predecessors Eastern Promises and A History of Violence, mark the end of an era for an auteur previously lauded for skilfully and imaginatively utilising visual allegory to reveal our deepest, darkest and dirtiest inner demons.

A Dangerous Method opens as an ambitious Carl Jung (Fassbender) begins practising the untested psychoanalytical theories pioneered by his mentor Sigmund Freud (Mortensen). Jung’s first guinea pig is a chin-juttingly jittery psychotic and sexual deviant, Sabina Spielrein (Knightley), and despite Jung’s attempts to remain loyal to his tepid, pregnant wife and to his own sense of professionalism and morality, a spankingly sadomasochistic sexual relationship develops between the two. This is mirrored by the development of a personal and professional friendship between Jung and Freud that, as the film progresses, sours due to professional differences between the two men – Freud feels that psychoanalysis is still in its infancy and therefore vulnerable to criticism by his peers, and as such should be

Fitful exchanges of letters and encounters between this trio thus form the backbone of the film, resulting in an endless series of dry discussions that all seem to take place on or around water – read into that what you will, although if the words ‘mother’ and ‘womb’ don’t come to mind, then you’re probably repressing something.

This new film is by no means without merit, and it is clear that Cronenberg has retained a semblance of his roots, employing subtext to tell a simple

yet compelling story about the foibles of human sexuality. However, the central characters, and therefore the actors’ performances, are muted by the fact that, as psychologists, they are far too busy analysing their own behaviour to bother with the tiresome task of actually feeling or reacting to anything instinctively.

This subjugation of the self is admirably attempted and well-intended, but hard to pull off on screen without some impressive acting or imaginative use of the visual medium – neither of which are sufficiently present here – thus calling into question the wisdom of adapting this John Kerr novel in the first place.

The script is a model of narrative economy and efficiency and rarely spoon-feeds the audience, although a feeling of redundancy is never too far away. In Mortensen, it appears the director has found his muse, delivering just the ratio of machine to mortal that Cronenberg requires, and while Knightley does what she can with a poorly developed role, it is frustrating at times to see her character show such little on-screen development as she inextricably morphs from a tickridden temptress to a sure-footed, well-respected psychologist in her own right.

The dilemma here is whether to judge this film independently of its director’s previous work or not. If one makes the comparison, the film disappoints; if not, it is an understated, uncompromising effort at a purer cinema, albeit only partially successful. The implication here is not that filmmakers should simply regurgitate a winning formula, but Cronenberg has previously offered genuine filmic originality, devastating psychological examination and unpretentious abstraction without becoming repetitive or stale. It is therefore all the more difficult to accept this shift without feeling a sense of loss.

EMEMBER to bust out the fine wine, because you’re going to need something tasty to go with this hunk of cheese.

Lockout is the latest of Luc Besson’s Europa Corp productions. He came up with the concept, but didn’t bother to direct it himself, handing

it over to newcomers James Mather and Stephen St Leger.

That was a good call on Besson’s part.

Snow (Pearce) gets caught up in the middle of CIA espionage and framed for murde.

He’s about to be sent up to space prison. Meanwhile, the goody-two shoes daughter of the president decides to visit the prison space station, where (of course) the prisoners take over and take her hostage. In light of recent events, there’s a change of plans and Snow is sent up to the station to rescue Emilie.

Why are we never prepared for the worst-case scenario? At the very least, the

film offers guidance for what not to do in the event that we ever create and need a space prison.

And what ever happened to character complexity? Our cheeky protagonist is truly the king of smart aleck replies. But he just lets the insults and the punches roll off like he’s too cool for school.

This film tries to be so bad it’s good, but fails. So it ends up in a strange limbo place that’s pleasant enough, yet unsatisfying.

This story also feels all too familiar. For those fans of campy ‘80s action movies starring Kurt Russell, you may recall the film Escape

from New York; the plot is very similar, except before it was the president who was hostage and New York the prison. The dark humour of the not-that-great original has been washed away and we’re left with an even worse sanitised version.

It’s easy to miss the good old days of Besson when he directed films like Leon and The Fifth Element. And quite frankly, it’s been a sad career trajectory for Guy Pearce if this is where he’s ended up.

The Kurt Russell era of action movies was over or so we hoped.

The film drew a lot of fire from the press as it was rejected by both Cannes and Venice, which created a somewhat toxic whiff. After all, Cannes built Mendoza’s reputation with his win for Kinatay, so how bad could his first decently budgeted film be? Well, not half as bad as expected. MH

It will make any recent films seem trivial and tame, a strange and unique beast indeed. It’s mature drama, bravely tackling complicated subject matter for those looking to experience something different. It’s original, visceral and disquieting – in the way only cinema can be. MW

A man-made monster may well be a feature retained from the original series, however in this case the man is Burton and the monster is Dark Shadows. AS

Unfortunately, We Bought a Zoo is formulaic, fluffy, politically hypercorrect and dreamy. KG

Snow White and the Huntsman (11) Dir: Rupert Sanders; UK/ US action, 2012, 127 mins; Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, Ian McShane In a twist to the fairy tale, the huntsman ordered to take Snow White into the woods to kill her winds up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen. But unfortunately, this overlong retelling of a Grimm fairy tale is short on magic. MH

The Lucky One (11) Dir: Scott Hicks; US drama, 2012, 101 mins; Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling, Blythe Danner The Lucky One doesn’t deliver many plot twists, and if you have seen the trailer, you basically saw the whole film. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

You know what to expect, so you can’t claim to be disappointed by it. It’s a romantic drama, so don’t expect fireworks. DC

Prometheus (15)

Dir: Gary Ross; US sci-fi, 2012, 142 mins; Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson Ross has successfully dissected and expanded the book and produced something that works as a film – so long as you’re not too precious about its origins. MH

Dir: Ridley Scott; US sci-fi, 2012, 126 mins; Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Idres Elba, Guy Pearce There are some decent moments of horror and tension. There are also planet-sized plot holes and moments of ham-fisted stupidity.

With the recent announcement that Ridley is returning to that other sci-fi masterpiece, Blade Runner, there’s a sense that in his twilight years he’s riding the coattails of his past success. MW

Men in Black III (11)

Dir: Larry Charles; US comedy, 2012, 83 mins; Sacha Baron Cohen, Anna Faris, Ben Kingsley, John C Reilly Cohen’s fans will recall the tepid disappointment of Ali G: Indahouse. The Dictator shares the fiction approach of that film and confirms the superiority of Cohen’s fiction/documentery hybrids over these pure fictions.

Genuinely funny moments are too few, and almost all of those aren’t politicised. MW

Dir: Barry Sonnenfeld; US action, 2012, 105 mins; Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Jemaine Clement It’s a light, fun sci-fiadventure, with perhaps a slightly darker overture than the previous films, MiB3 is worth seeing in a theatre – if for nothing else the roar of the Apollo rocket that rumbles your chest, and the 3D which is one of the better that I have encountered. Dir: Lasse Hallström; UK dramedy, 2011, 107 mins; Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt, Kristin Scott Thomas They don’t really make movies like Salmon Fishing in the Yemen anymore, but when they did in the 90s, it was Hallström who made them, and in that way the movie feels like a pleasant throwback. MH

Wuthering Heights (15) Dir: Andrea Arnold; UK drama, 2011, 129 mins; Kaya Scodelario, James Howson, Oliver Milburn Based on the classic novel by Emily Brontë, this adaption of Wuthering Heights is one of the most impressive costume dramas of the year. MH

Get the Gringo (15) Dir: Adrian Grunberg; US action, 2012, 96 mins; Mel Gibson, Peter Stormare, Dean Norris Mel Gibson finds new life in a Mexican jail after getting caught with $4 million dollars of mobster money. Not an easy place for an outsider, unless it’s with the help of someone who knows the ropes – a 10-year-old kid.

It’s both cheesy and striking, corny and bold, dismissible and yet strangely appealing. MH

I’d Do Anything BBC Entertainment, Sun 16:40

NOT SURE there’s been a more aptly-named singing show than I’d Do Anything, which involves 12 tarts with a heart bidding to win the role of good-time girl Nancy in a London stage production of Oliver! But it would be a disservice to this BBC vehicle (Andrew LloydWebber and his team are returning after similar outings to cast the leads in The Sound of Music and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat) to suggest they’re all brazen hussies who would sell their own grandmother for a chance to appear on The Voice, because this is good, wholesome fun for the whole family. What can we say: it’s X Factor for the middle classes.

They’re also the target viewers for Oliver Twist (BBC Ent, Sun 16:05), which had the temerity

to cast a black actress in the role of Nancy, sparking a nationwide debate over whether this was feasible.

Well actually, there’s good evidence that Charles Dickens based the character of Fagin on a 60-year-old black gangmaster. A report in The Times detailed how “an intelligent boy aged 10 years” had run away from home and been befriended and taken home by Murphy’s son (the Artful Dodger), who is described

by The Times as “a copper-coloured lad” – the politically correct terminology of 1834, no less.

Less PC were the 1960s, the era of The Kangaroo Gang: Thieves

by Appointment (BBC Ent, Sun 21:30), a gang of Australian rogues who stole their way around Europe.
