YOU’RE PROBABLY bored of hearing about how the very first Distortion (see G3) in 1998 was held to promote the launch of this publication. There are cupboards in our kitchen and the odd cardboard box, where you’ll still find matches especially made for the 2000 edition (to mark our second birthday) – collector’s items!

You never know, it’s not inconceivable that they could take their unique slant on street partying to other European cities: Barcelona, Prague, Amsterdam, Berlin, pretty much all the pretentious ones. But in the meantime (see cover photo), they’re fighting for their survival and need our help to continue. Just like coming to our pages every day and never clicking on an ad or never following one of our recommendations etc, turning up to only the Distortion street parties (and turning your nose up at the night parties) whilst drinking crappy warm beer you bought in the supermarket is the equivalent of kicking the or-

ganisers in the balls.

And sure, the organisation might be shoddy (Jesus, Distortion has more in common with this newspaper than I’d previously thought), the aftermath might be messy (you should see my desk), and it might be loud and obnoxious (don’t upset me on deadline day), but is the alternative (used as an auto-antonym here – no, nothing to do with Michael Hutchence) really what we want, so we can go back to our home countries and boast about the over-priced, nonspontaneous, sanitised, mundane street festival in our city.

Curiously, it’s like Copenhageners these days either want something for nothing or to pay through the nose. Fortunately, the Medieval Market (see G2) and Malmø Vintage Fair (G9) don’t fall into this category. The market is a bargain to enter and the re-enactments and jousts are a real treat for the kids, whilst the fair is the brainchild of two fashionistas who extensively travel across Europe in search of untapped supplies of vintage clothing.

Maybe Distortion could learn something from their orderly approach, but will people still be talking about them in 20 years time?

Copenhagen Medieval Market

Valbyparken, 2450 Cph; starts Fri, ends Mon, open Fri 09:00-18:00, Sat & Sun 10:00-17:00, Mon 11:00-18:00; tickets: adults 90kr, kids 60kr, www.billetnet. dk; www.kmm.dk WHEN MARSELLUS, in the film Pulp Fiction, declared that he was going to “get medieval”, it was probably not four fantastic days of role playing in Valbyparken over the Whitsun weekend that he had in mind.

The highly popular Medieval Fair will once again transport an expected 2,000 guests back in time to the days when swords were swung, axes ground and damsels in distress were rescued by knights bold and brave. Visitors will have a chance to release their inner knights and participate in all kinds of middle ages activities, from the combative to the creative.

The resounding clash of metal against armour can be heard and witnessed during the Battle of the Nations competition in which individuals and teams of three will compete against each other for the chance to represent Denmark in international tournaments. There are strict rules to ensure the authenticity of both the weapons and armour. This is a daily event from Saturday, at 11:00 and 15:00 with the finals taking place on Monday.

Performance Tivoli Cabaret

Tivoli, Vesterbrogade 3, Cph V; ends Sep 22; performances Tue-Thu 20:00, Thu-Sat 20:30; Tickets: 315-415kr; duration: 180 mins, www.tivolicabaret.dk Complete with little round tables and singers who double as waiting staff, Cabaret at Tivoli is an evening of light-hearted kitsch entertainment. Incorporating stand-up comedy, magic, drag queens, sketches, opera and music medleys, this will be a fun variety show, whether you take advantage of the free bar or not.

Most of the acts are in Danish, but the cheesy pop hits are in a language everyone can understand. EB

battles of yesteryear. These noisy, fastmoving encounters with horses, banners, marching armies and falling soldiers begin at 14:00 each day and are definitely one of the highlights, giving a taste of role-playing to the uninitiated.

There is nothing like a bit of old-fashioned jousting to raise the spirits. At 11:30 and 16:00 each day, the tournament area will host the popular and colourful jousting tournaments where, hopefully, the Black Knight will get his just desserts. Here, all the way from Finland, the Rohan Tallit stables will be displaying ancient horsemanship and fighting skills with swords, bows and lances.

After a hard day’s rampaging around in heavy armour, your average knight needs a bit of light-hearted entertainment. This year, the Belarus DiGrease Buffoon theatre group will be entertaining the crowds with their eclectic mix of jesters, jugglers, acrobats, stilt-walkers, musicians and fire performances. If fire is your thing, then don’t miss the all-female Ildfolket (fire people) group who guarantee to add fuel to the flames.

An active interest in all things viking and medieval is fairly popular in Denmark, and several of these passionate and enthusiastic groups are represented at the fair.

The Scramasax group will have their own encampment and will be giving hands-on demonstrations of archery, cooking and handicrafts, as well as giving performances.

The Way the World Ends

TeaterHUSET; Rådhusstræde 13 (entrance through Magstræde), Cph K; ends 2 June; daily performances at 19:00 (not Sat & Sun); Tickets: 60kr, www. billetto.dk As its title suggests, this performance explores human beings at their darkest moments, from those who have lost a loved one, to those living in fearing of each other or the final inevitable moment of death. But it’s not all doom and gloom. The production also reveals humans’ acceptance of the absurdity of life. The themes are presented through an interesting collage of texts, incorporating theatre, physical performance, video projections, music and song. The performance is entirely in English. EB

the artists will transform you into goblins or paint on some impressive-looking war wounds. The group will probably be responsible for any monsters and witches roaming free around the festival grounds. The group will organise activities for kids including hammer-throwing, role-playing and, of course, bow and arrow target practice.

The market area has a variety of stands to visit where there won’t be an electrical gadget in sight. Masks, jewellery, sheepskin and musical instruments are among the medieval fare on offer. Craftsman Jens Perleberg creates exquisite chests and wooden items in the old-fashioned way. Den Sorte Ridder sew a range of authentic soldier’s costumes, while the Middle Ages group Laudator Temporis Acti have an impressive display of authentically-designed helmets and sharp shiny axes. Runesmith has lovingly crafted copper and pewter brooches and bracelets as his wares. The more adventurous guests may decide that this is a time to get their first tattoo after a trip to the Skin and Bone tent. It goes without saying that there are also plenty of medieval drinks and tasty titbits available, so you won’t go hungry.

So, tired of the nightlife in Copenhagen? Perhaps you should give the knightlife a go instead, and take a trip back in time to the Copenhagen medieval market for four days of family fun over the Whitsun weekend.

Composed in 1946-47, it’s a chamber opera in three acts exploring society’s reaction to a strange individual, a shy bachelor who is crowned the King of May an honour normally bestowed on women. It’s hilarious and reminiscent of English opera’s origins as jigs performed at the end of plays at court. And who doesn’t like a good ol’ jig? EB

Two years later to celebrate InOut’s second party, it became a five-day affair, each day moving to a new area of the city to engulf them with their infamous street parties.

The three main street parties take place in the city centre, Nørrebro and Vesterbro, before a big final party on the Saturday and then a major chill-out (Hygge) on the last day. This mobile cocktail of partying has become widely popular, and according to the organisers “the mobile party concept is perfect to make everyone lose control.”

The show’s four pieces are devised by top choreographers: Wayne McGregor, Yuri Possokhov, Patrick Delcroix and the acclaimed Danish former dancer Tina Tarpgaard. British choreographer McGregor’s intense, acrobatic and sometimes lyrical choreography plays on contrasts, while Tarpgaard explores how to use technology in an interesting way. And it is safe to say that’s what happened last year when the total number of different people who attended went up from 40,000 to 130,000.

But while Distortion is playing in the big league now, that doesn’t mean they’ve developed a stuck-up attitude. For example, there’s no VIP area as “anybody should feel welcome everywhere.”

The only problem about the increased attendance is the cleaning costs, which is why everybody is encouraged to buy a wristband to support the street parties this year.

All-in-all, the festival includes more than 166 dancefloors at its massive street parties during the daytime and spectacular raves at night. And this year includes some truly major acts, including Chromatics, Mike Skinner and Trentemøller. MØ

This performance will include Tim Rushton’s critically acclaimed Monolith - currently playing at Det Kongelige Teater – and excerpts from Love Songs.

Rushton has also selected one of Kim Brandstrup’s beautiful duets to perform. If you plan to sit on the hill with a view of the water, bring a picnic rug or beach chair. EB

Thu from 16:00; recommended events at Nørrebrohallen, Spillestedet Stengade, Rust On the other side of the lakes, ‘Nørrebronx’ always lives up to its name with a mix of ghetto and booty music. For the widest variety of music and no less than three stages, Nørrebrohallen is the place to be. Not to be missed are New Orleans’ gay rapper – yes, they do exist - Sissy Nobby and DJ Funk, who pioneered the ghetto house subgenre of house music. MH

For his controversial piece, Klipper has carved 33 portraits of leading politicians, church officials, and media personas from Italy, Denmark, and other countries that he believes are responsible for promoting intolerance in society. For example, Klipper includes a portrait of Danish Folkeparti leader Pia Kjærsgaard. The portraits also double as wood block print plates. The exhibition includes the carved portraits and large poster prints.

Fri 1 June from 16:00; recommended events at Remisen, Skateparken, Lastbil Scenen In the red-light/hipster district, various stages will be dotted around as local venues host their own Distortion parties. Keep an eye out for some of the special events that day like the street dinner party – you can bring our own food, but cheap food will be also be sold at stalls set up by Cofoco, Madtjenesten and Hein’s Flæskestegssandwich. Besides Vesterbro, these dinner parties will also be organised in Nørrebro and in the heart of the city. At 10pm, the action moves from the block party to the nearby clubs. Six dance floors at six venues with five genres of music, all in close proximity to each other. Whether you like techno, house, indie, urban or reggae, everybody is catered for.

Faiss chooses to work with stillness and almost imperceptible movement in her minimal video installations. In contrast, Marianne Grønnow, a painter, chooses bold, dramatic colours for her canvases. He twists traditional sculptural forms with contemporary references, exploring themes of identity, death and the violence of contemporary life. BF

Among the highlights are: Remisen (Soup Kitchen), where one of New York City’s most popular DJs, the Chilean-born Dinky, will hit the sports hall with a mix of house, techno and funk and soul; Skateparken (Distortion), where the godfather of Danish electro Anders Trentemøller will be taking centre stage; and Lastbil Scenen (Soundvenue): where the star of the show is British rapper Mike Skinner, who is best known for his music project The Streets.

Howler

IKE AN adolescent boy’s first chest hair, Howler is a band that sprung out from nowhere. Battling boredom and presumably teenage angst, then 17-year-old frontman Jordan Gatesmith and former bandmate Daniel Hupp created Howler in 2010. Gatesmith – named one of NME’s 50 coolest people last year – said he had been creating a new band “every other week” until he hit the right chord with Howler. For some reason Gatesmith’s other creations Gay Animals, Total Babe and A-Cups didn’t quite catch on.

On a fateful trip to a Planned Parenthood clinic in their home state of Minnesota, Gatesmith befriended keyboardist Max Petrek after spotting him tapping his feet to a ‘50s tune in the waiting room. The pair bonded over their similar musical tastes and a successful partnership was born. Ian Nygaard took the guitarist’s spot, even though he was already playing in another band, Nice Purse. The original lineup’s final member was drummer Brent Mayes, who went to the same high school as Gatesmith.

The configuration has changed slightly over time, with Hupp out and bassist France Camp (otherwise known as Jay Simonson) in.

Hailing from Minneapolis, the band are fresh meat on the indie rock scene. Howler released their first full-length album, America Give Up, just this year, but critics already see big potential in this scruffy young group. Freelance writer Jon Garret was at the release show for Howler’s first EP, This One’s Different (2011), and was so impressed by Gatesmith’s charisma on stage that he sneakily sent the

band’s record off to London’s Rough Trade Records. Howler scored a record deal with the label later that year, before shipping off to support The Vaccines on tour – a band they’ve been compared to, along with The Strokes.

Signing to a British label, and then releasing an album called America Give Up, sends a pretty clear message about Howler’s attitude towards their homeland. Inspired by the likes of The Smiths, Gatesmith has found his niche in Manchester and, of course, London.

“I was never a tea drinker until I came to England. Now, I’m like: ‘F*** coffee’, I don’t care anymore. Coffee is over,” he told DIY. Flabbergasted by the hype surrounding them abroad – NME named them third best new band of 2011 – Gatesmith says they have received a lukewarm reception back home.

“Growing up, my joke with all my friends was Minneapolis is where dreams go to die,” he told Minnesota Public Radio.

The brazen now-20-year-old brings cheek to Howler’s lyrics and song titles too: ‘You Like White Women, I Like Cigarettes’ is one example.

With another album in the works, the five-piece plan to draw on psychedelic ’60s sounds inspired by The Yardbirds and The Rolling Stones. Howler expects to finish their second record by March 2013. But at the moment, with only just over a dozen songs to choose from, the band typically play short sets at their live shows. Though Gatesmith prefers to play ninesong shows, he says they’ll probably have to play their full repertoire for their headline tour.

After playing in Denmark at the end of May, Howler will hit Sweden and much of Europe before going further afield for festivals and side-shows in Australia and Japan. If that won’t put hair on their chests, who knows what will?

His pioneering slant on the indigenous, uplifting timba music launched him onto the global world music scene in the early ‘80s. Defecting to the US in 2006 for greater artistic freedom, Delgado’s extraordinarily smooth vocals, paired with his stylised tropical rhythms of the Caribbean, led to a successful collaborative project with Sergio George, En Primera Plana (2007), which went on to win both a Grammy and a Latin Grammy.

n what seems like a lifetime ago, I was a huge hiphop fan. But as time went on, I drifted away and there remained only a very small handful of artists that I even bothered keeping tabs on.

Brother Ali is one of those artists. But that he still holds my interest is not surprising, for Brother Ali is anything but a normal rapper. The albino, Muslim MC doesn’t rap about the hedonistic topics so prevalent in hip-hop – namely sex, drugs, and violence – but about everyday struggles, issues of self-doubt and self-worth, love and relationships, class struggle and social injustice.

When Ali took the stage last night at Vega and plunged into ‘The Preacher’, there was no doubt that in the years since I last saw him perform live he has further perfected his craft.

Amager Bio; 21:00; 120kr Yip Deceiver is the side-project of Davey Pierce and Nicolas Dobbratz – one half of the quirky electro-rock group Of Montreal. Dipping into the idiosyncratic bag of tricks that led to the popularity of Of Montreal – short, sharp electronic gurgles, paired with catchy, simple, LCD Soundsystem-inspired vocals – their playful brand of discopop is set to make waves on the festival circuit. With their debut record due to be released in just a few weeks, it’s good timing to take a listen to Canada’s latest hip band.

As he segued into ‘Fresh Air’ off his 2009 album Us, Ali led the crowd on a sing-along of the feel-good chorus “I love the life I live, my laughter and my tears/I don’t know where I’m goin’ but I like it like it is.”

But those who listen beyond the arm-waving chorus are given an insight into the rapper’s home life and his professional climb: “Just got married last year/treated so good that it ain’t even fair/ Already got a boy, now the baby girl’s here/bought us a house like the Berenstein Bears.”

Jazzhus Montmartre; 20:00; 250kr The alto-saxophonist extraordinaire von Bülow has earned a gleaming reputation on Copenhagen’s prestigious jazz scene over the years. Her collaborator tonight will be the American guitarist Rayney, perhaps bestknown for his work with Chet Baker. The Montmartre is one of the most established jazz emporiums on the continent, and for those interested in a more toned-down Saturday night out on the town, this will be a jazz concert of the highest calibre.

Giana Factory

Loppen; 21:00; 100kr The all-female trio offer an avant-gardist slant on things, combining folk and electro elements together with carefully crafted lyrics to produce a sound that is definably contemporary and markedly original.

Having played at Denmark’s Roskilde and SPOT festivals – as well as receiving rave reviews from several of Denmark’s major music publications – they are certainly one of Scandinavia’s most promising acts.

A mishmash of urban beats, cathartic sound loops and surreal, often pornographic lyrics, it’s Keith’s inventive rapping-style that has earned him the reputation as one of New York’s most talented beatsmiths. With a new album, Love & Danger, due out this summer, and some of his new material being heard for the first time in Scandinavia, it’s a fact that he’ll bring in a big crowd.

But while Ali excels in personal lyrics, his other area of expertise lies in wading into the political as displayed by his performance of ‘Uncle Sam Goddamn’ with its incendiary chorus of “Welcome to the United Snakes/Land of the thief, home of the slave/Grand imperial guard where the dollar is sacred and power is god.”

For this reviewer, the highlight of the night was a late set run-through of songs from the

seminal 2003 album Shadows on the Sun and the following year’s Champion EP: ‘Rain Water’, ‘Forest Whitaker’, ‘Blah Blah Blah’, and ‘Self Taught’.

After a short break, the MC came back out for another new song off Mourning in America before closing with ‘Us’, leaving the crowd inspired by the man who may look like – in his own words – “a mix between the KFC guy and Santa Claus”, but who sounds like one of the most talented rappers to ever hold the mic.

Fælledparken is enormous and Bust is nowhere to be found. I try calling him again, but there’s no connection. Did he switch it off?! Is my trusted photographer abandoning me on this sacred day of left-wing supersoaked socialising?

Hey, maybe that’s it: socialising!

Could that be what it’s about? I look around. There sure are a lot of people; that’s social right? I can see the banner now: “Just be social” – doesn’t get more meaningful than that. I raise my fist, but as I turn around to announce my new slogan and infuse the confused masses with existential ambrosia I realise that I’m too late.

They’ve already heard it. “Just be social” is already the mantra of the May the first general strike. We are not socialists, or communists – there’s no new world order coming. It’s already here. What could any ‘ideology’ possibly have to offer us? We’ve already got everything we want – right?

Nothing left to do but celebrate. Get hammered. Be social.

I feel nauseous all of a sudden.

Must be the sun. Where is Bust? I need a familiar face. Still no connection. I lock my eyes to the ground and start plowing through the seemingly endless masses of flesh, piss and beer that fill this sunny day. I reach the exit, and as I gaze back at the masses from afar, another song pops into my head.

Lou Reed’s tragic voice starts moaning: “Oh, it’s such a perfect day/I’m glad I spent it with you/Oh, such a perfect day/You just keep me hanging on/you just keep me haa-anging on.”

“Are you drunk Bust? We’re working! I’ll come to you - where are you now?… Connection lost.

It’s May the first and the sun is pounding. Perfect weather for the general strike. In Denmark it’s customary to allow half a day off for the strike ... It’s a strike, don’t ask permission, just do it. Leave.

But it’s not like that anymore.

Actually it’s never been like that for as long as I can remember. What are we striking for? Higher wages, shorter hours, longer pensions? Got to be something worth fighting for, right?

A catchy Beastie Boys line pops into my head and, merging with a parade, I start humming: “You gotta fight for your right to Paaaaaaartay.”

As I walk towards ‘Fælledparken’ – the destination of the Copenhagen May 1 parades and the nucleus of entertainment, speeches and alcohol consumption in Copenhagen over the next ten hours – I see a banner that reads “Abolish Capitalism”.

Maybe that’s it. Maybe a drastic set of reforms designed to reboot the world out of capitalism is what all this is about.

Maybe. But what does that even mean? What is capitalism exactly: how do you get rid of it and what’s the alternative? I go back to humming.

“Most of our stock is organic, fair-trade and sustainable,” explains co-owner Nina Esper about the products, which are all beautifully arranged in old wooden fruit boxes on the wall. “We like to see ourselves as a gourmet food shop with a focus on tea and chocolate.” The Thorntons ‘lightly salted dark chocolate with macadamia’ is now my new favourite treat, and it is one of the few shops to stock the Danish/British chocolate brand ‘Chocolate and Love’. The dream team behind the vintage fair – we owe them everything

The fair is organised by six people from different backgrounds who decided that Malmö needed its own vintage fairs. They are freelance photographer Andreas Paulsson, ecologists Linnea Folkesson and Emelie Kärre, environmental scientist Mary Collings, and Kamila Weremko and Maria Pihlblad, who run the fashion

store ‘Flique’ in Malmø city centre.

Weremko is passionate about finding old clothes and is prepared to visit many strange places to find the right clothing and accessories with soul and history, while Pihlblad has a background as an architect and interior designer.

Material satisfaction aside, a day of vintage shopping will get your feet tired, but don’t despair, as there’s also the opportunity to enjoy hot and cold food, organic cupcakes and coffee.

AS THE SUMMER rapidly approaches, now is the perfect time to dust off the barbecue and get ready for a season of outdoor grilling.

There really is nothing better than relaxing on a sunny day, with a beer in hand, as the barbie sizzles away in the background.

As an Australian, I’m a bit of a barbecue addict, and from casual family dinners to relaxed entertaining with friends, barbecuing is the ideal way to prepare food.

When I think of the classic Aussie barbie, the first thing that comes to mind is the good old glorious steak. While it can be difficult to cook the perfect steak, with a bit of barbie knowhow, it’ll be easier than you

think to master this carnivore’s dream dish.

For tender, juicy steaks that are full of flavour and cooked to perfection, it’s important to have the right equipment before you start.

Apart from the most obvious thing, a charcoal or gas barbecue, it’s also important to have long-handled tongs, an oil bowl, and pastry brush for brushing the steaks - and a large plate for resting the cooked steak before serving.

A couple of sausages always go well with steak, but remember to cook them thoroughly.

They and chicken can be perilously tricky to grill – patience is the key.

Tucked away behind a hard-to-find door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS

Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a “best ever veal experience”) and the chocolate cake (“Oh My God”), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that you don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that you can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. How to barbecue the perfect steak Cooking times: For steak 1-2 cm thick: Rare: 1-1 1/2 mins each side Medium: 2-3 mins each side Well done: 3-4 mins each side For steak 2-3 cm thick: Rare: 2-3 mins each side Medium: 4-5 mins each side Well done: 5-6 mins each side PREHEAT a barbecue grill on medium-high.

Brush both sides of the steak with olive oil to prevent it from sticking to the barbecue. This is better than brushing the barbecue, as it prevents the oil from burning. Excess oil can create smoke and cause flare-ups on the barbecue.

Wait until just before cooking to season your steak, as salt draws out the flavourful juices from the meat, making it tough.

Season one side with salt and pepper, then cook the steak, seasoned-side down first, to seal in the flavour. Season the other side just before turning over.

Cook the steak on the barbecue, using long-handled tongs to turn the steak, until cooked to your liking. Cooking times vary depending on the thickness.

Turn steak once only during cooking – any more and the juices escape, which can make the meat tough.

After cooking, transfer the steak to a plate and cover with foil. Set aside for 5 minutes to rest.

Heat pushes the juices to the centre of the steak. Resting it after cooking allows the meat to relax, and the juices then distribute evenly throughout the steak, making it succulent and tender.

All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day - serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, and upstairs there’s a new lounge area, which is the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. and almost melt on the tongue. If you aren’t hiding an inner sommelier, the waitresses also provide excellent advice on the best wine combinations. If you’re on a glass-basis, the Barbarzul, cuvee Cadiz from Spain is good for the lamb chops, and the Sembro Tempranillo, Ribera del Duero from Spain for the beef.

For dessert, the only sane choice seemed to be the Chocolate maximum, which is a delicious chocolate cake served with ice cream. After two courses, it’s unfortunately often difficult to squeeze

and food in Danish as well as English.

For the main course, the ‘Today’s special’ is a good offer if you aren’t splurging out on the three-course meal, but unfortunately it was sold out by 19:00. Szymanski explains that they only order a limited amount of groceries for each day, so they can guarantee it’s fresh all the time. It’s all well: we prefer the Steak of beef fillet and the Lamb chops anyway. And it turns out to be a good choice. The lamb chops, especially, are amazing. Nicely arranged on smoked potato puree, they are medium-cooked

“BYSTRO, BYSTRO!” yelled the Russian cossacks when they wanted a quick serving of food during the Russian occupation of Paris in 1815. At least that’s the urban legend behind the nowadays familiar restaurant term ’bistro’, which apparently means ‘quickly’ in Russian.

And at Huks Fluks, they have taken the Russian meaning of the word literally and accompanied it with the Danish word ‘fluks’, which means something close to ‘in a heart beat’. All in all, the bistro offers a snappy service, especially on the lunch menu that can be prepared in five to ten minutes. If the clock hits just one second past the promised time, you get a free coffee or drink on the house. Now that’s good service whether you’re Russian or not.

Though nobody likes to wait for food if they’re hungry and in a hurry, a fast pace can remind one of contemporary society’s version of the 19th century French bistro: the fast food restaurant.

However, poor quality, greasy food definitely isn’t being served here. While the food is served in a swift manner, it’s prepared with good quality ingredients like, for example, the house speciality: the Black food ham, which ripens in the basement.

Even though the ham looks divine, we go for the other starters on the menu: Moules marinière and Pea risotto. The steamed mussels are served in a creamy sauce of reduced stock with cream, shallots, white wine and herbs, which gives it a light and fresh taste, with some small fresh potatoes and mayo on the side.

Though the French might have preferred the accompaniment to consist of ‘frites’, the fresh potatoes do give the dish a nice Danish summer twist. The risotto, meanwhile is mixed with mascarpone and new spring pod peas, which makes it nice and creamy like a risotto should be.

The bistro is located at the charming and colourful Gråbrødre Square in the centre of Copenhagen very close to Strøget. Except for the occasional ridiculously stubborn pigeon, this is the perfect place to enjoy a meal outside when the weather is nice. While the sun will keep the guests warm late into the evening, you can always heat up underneath a blanket (if not your partner) or move inside.

The waitresses are smiley and accommodating throughout the evening, and the restaurant manager, Berit Szymanski, goes out of her way to narrate and explain different stories about the place

AKING its cue from Indiana Jones that it is apparently permissable to make a movie sequel more than ten years after the last one, Will Smith brings back his Man in Black for a third time.

But is it third time lucky for the Fresh Prince and his double-decker trailer?

MiB filmmaker Barry Sonnenfeld attempts to reinvigorate his franchise ten years after the second instalment and 15 years after the original. This may seem a bit of an odd choice as there didn’t seem to be any worldwide clamour for a third movie, save for maybe Smith who hasn’t actually starred in a big blockbuster for a few years now. Perhaps with a Coen writing MiB3, it has a chance. Whoops, that’s not either of the Coen brothers, but a fella named Etan Coen who gets top writing billing among three others for a movie that started filming before the script was even finished. Not a good start for his Will-ness.

MiB3 starts with the prison break of Boris the Animal (Clement best known for Flight of the Conchords, taking a turn against type) who has a beef to pick with Agent K (Jones) who put him behind bars, taking one of his arms in the process. In order to exact his revenge, he plans to travel back to 1969 to repay him for good.

Meanwhile, Agents J (Smith) and K are a bit morose as Agent Z is dead, as is any zip or life in the partner ban-

Ah, so that’s where Will Smith’s daughter got her horrendous dance moves from ter of the two agents from the first film. I guess 15 years can do that to anybody. But when K disappears from existence in 2012, only J notices something is wrong. Eventually he determines that he too must travel back in time, with the help of a sympathetic fifth dimensional being named Griffen (Stuhlbarg), to save his partner (and of course the world) with the help of Agent K v.1969 (Brolin).

MiB3 is really what the second instalment should have been, and tonally

it is more akin to the first as well. It’s a light, fun sci-fi adventure, with perhaps a slightly darker overture than the previous films. The big cookie (somewhat over-foreshadowed) is that the previously unexplained reason of why K recruited J in the first place is also finally brought to light, providing an unexpected note of sentimentality that worked surprisingly well, even though everyone could see it coming.

With Tommy Lee Jones relegated to supporting status (about 15 min-

utes of screen time), Will Smith takes the main starring role. While he gets to revert back to the feel-good, almost goofy Agent J of the first film, sometimes the humour feels a bit pressed.

The defacto star of MiB3 is Josh Brolin, as demonstrated from all the previews, who is even better when you get to see him for the entire film. He somehow manages to perfectly portray Jones’ mannerisms but still inject enough of his own relative youth (he’s 44 but playing an agent of 29) to make

Agent K v.1969 his own character.

When talking about Men in Black movies, I would be remiss to not mention the (once again) superb alien/ costume design of Rick Baker who delivers a movie full of goodies (once again). It’s also worth noting that while it is sometimes possible to see movies outside the theatre, MiB3 is worth seeing in one – if for nothing else the roar of the Apollo rocket that rumbles your chest, and the 3D which is one of the better that I have encountered.

REPARE to keep your expectations low for the latest Hollywood ensemble rom com, What to Expect When You’re Expecting.

The title of the film is taken from the famous 1984 pregnancy how-to book, though the name is

about all they have in common.

The story follows five attractive couples as they get pregnant (one couple adopts) and eventually give birth.

For a film that claims to show how unpredictable life can be, the script is horribly predictable. The writing relies on broad depictions to appeal to a larger audience, which results in a washed-out story that uses heavy-handed clichés and stereotypes.

Naturally, the female characters all want to be pregnant and never show any doubt or fear in the face of that decision. Because, you know, all women want babies. Even the one-night-stand couple don’t consider other op-

tions. And of course, the men are the ones with doubts, unable to express their true feelings to their partners.

There is very little plot development and the resolutions to the problems the characters have are shallow. Towards the end of the film, there is a terribly clichéd speech – you know the one: the person prepares a speech and starts to give it but decides to throw it out and make a truly inspired one on the spot. Ironically, the speech is about how difficult pregnancy really is and how noone really talks about it. And yet this film completely glosses over the many difficult problems the characters would have had!

Holly (Lopez) loses her job, but the consequences of that apparently have no effect on her eventual adoption. One character has a miscarriage and goes through the different stages of loss; but we never really see how that manifests beyond her not wanting to date a guy and then deciding to give him another chance.

The only silver lining to this film is Chris Rock making an appearance as the leader of a ‘dude club’, a group of dads who get together and let off steam. Any other laughs are few and far between.

If you’re thinking about seeing the film, abort mission.

It will make any recent films seem trivial and tame, a strange and unique beast indeed. It’s mature drama, bravely tackling complicated subject matter for those looking to experience something different. It’s original, visceral and disquieting - in the way only cinema can be. MW

Dir: Michael Sucsy; US drama, 2012, 104 mins; Rachel McAdams, Channing Tatum, Sam Neill, Scott Speedma, Jessica Lange, Jessica McNamee A car accident puts Paige in a coma, and when she wakes up with severe memory loss, her husband Leo works to win her heart again. Basically, if you’re a romantic drama type, you’ll love this movie. Also, it seems like the only purpose of films like The Vow are to make the rest of us guys look bad. MH

Iron Sky (15) Dir: Timo Vuorensolas; Fin/ Aus/Ger action/com, 2012, 93 mins; Julia Dietze, Götz Otto, Christopher Kirby, Peta Sergeant Iron Sky has proved that the studio system has its uses; this script would likely have seen a drafts before getting greenlit. As it is, Vuorensolas goosestepped out of obsecurity and right into the cine-scheisse.

Not to knock the monumental achievement of assembling this huge production, but just because you can, doesn’t necessarily mean you should. MW

Dark Shadows (11) Dir: Gary Ross; US sci-fi, 2012, 142 mins; Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson There is absolutely nothing dark about this film and the only thing lurking in the shadow is a huge amount of wasted potential. A man-made monster may well be a feature retained from the original series, however in this case the man is Burton and the monster is Dark Shadows. AS

Journey to the Mysterious Island (11) Dir: Brad Peyton; US sci-fi action, 2012, 94 mins; Josh Hutcherson, Dwayne Johnson, Vanessa Hudgens This is one of those 50kr family adventure movies that you might consider picking up from the DVD box on the counter in the gas station if only to keep the kids entertained for the rest of the drive. Also Playing We Need to Talk About Kevin (7) Dir: Lynne Ramsay; UK, US drama, 2011, 112 mins; Tilda Swinton, John C Reilly, Ezra Miller Kevin’s mother struggles to love her strange child, despite the increasingly vicious things he says and does as he grows up.

But Kevin is just getting started, and his final act will be beyond anything anyone imagined. It’s not an easy story to tell, but the filmmakers do it well. MH

American Pie (7) Dir: Jon Hurwitz; US comedy, 2012, 110 mins; Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Seann William Scott The last serving of pie may not be the best, but it certainly is tasty in its own right and a worthy clinger to a fantastic (in a manner of speaking) series of films. KE

Chronicle (15) Dir: Josh Trank; US sci-fi action, 2012, 83 mins; Dane DeHaan, Michael B Jordan, Michael Kelly, Alex Russell Three high school students make an incredible discovery, giving them superpowers. As they learn to control their abilities and use them to their advantage, their lives start to spin out of control, and their darker sides begin to take over. This film puts a fresh spin on the superhero origin story, a tale Hollywood spins again and again. MH

Genuinely funny moments are too few, and almost all of those aren’t politicised. MW

America in Primetime SV2, Tue 20:00

WITH EPISODES based on character not genre types, America in Primetime (SV2, Tue 20:00) is an interesting history piece, not just about US TV, but its culture, which TV critic David Bianculli called “the smartest TV show about television I’ve seen in about 20 years”. Among the contributors are Alan Ball, Matthew Weiner and David Chase, the respective creators of Six Feet Under, Mad Men and The Sopranos.

Daresay in 20 years time they won’t be talking about Danger 5 (DR2, Wed 21:00). Inglourious Basterds, Iron Sky and Somersby cider ads suggest that people think rewriting history is hilarious (particularly with Nazis). This Aussie comedy sees a Thunderbirds-type squad trying to assassinate Hitler. It’s brilliant stuff, providing you’re stoned.

We could also reimagine the murder of Lord Mountbatten (DRK, Mon 22:40), but sadly in this episode of Infamous Assasinations (DRK, Mon 22:40) he doesn’t stop the impact of the boat bomb with his arse – all we get are the facts, lest we … care in the first place.

Jury’s out on Hart of Dixie (K4, Mon 20:00), a series about a sassy New Yorker doctor taking a job in the Deep South (what an original idea!), and Kingdom Hospital (SV2, Fri 23:00), Stephen King’s remake of Lars von Trier’s acclaimed series, although nobody, not even the kid in The Shining, knows why he bothered.

Elsewhere, in Secret Girlfriend (DRHD, Thu 18:45) you are the main character and are constantly spoken to – it sounds tiring; Apollo

17: the Untold Story of the Last Men on the Moon (DRK, Mon 20:40) marks 40 years since we strutted our stuff in the moondust; we’ve got the third season of Nurse Jackie (SV2, Wed 22:30) and 17th (God help us) of America’s Next Top Model (TV3, Thu 21:00); Talking Movies: Cannes Special (BBC World, Sat 13:30) and SV2, Tue 20:00 America in Primetime Queen Elizabeth II: Diamond Jubilee (SV1, Sat 18:15) speak for themselves; Unforgettable (TV3, Sun 18:00) is unforgettably bad, as is Pregnant in Heels (SVI, Thu 22:30) but at least it has a cringeworthy appeal; and The toughest place to be a … (DR2, Wed 21:30) follows a Welsh paramedic for two weeks in Guatemala City – surely a breeze compared to Cardiff.
