HORSERACING is one of the few sports that genuinely attracts all-comers. The snobs and yobs, educated and illiterate, royalty and villainy, tipsters and dipsticks – the racetrack is where they come, united by a love of the punt and a desire to empty the bookies’ pockets.

Sometimes though, this can be a little intimidating for normal folk who don’t know the difference between a placepot and a jackpot and think a yankee is a slur term for a Democrat. So while you might not find a crowd as rich in character at Klampenborg Racetrack, at least you won’t feel alienated by your lack of knowledge. Irish Day (see G3 for details) is a laidback affair where the emphasis is more on the craic at the bar than the crack of the whip. It’s a great day out, even if it does rain, thanks to some new indoor facilities that are surprisingly swanky.

They’re good but I’m not sure I’d get a tattoo of them ... or anything else. My dilemma about getting one (see G2 for details of the Ink Festival) is having the same con-

versation about it, again and again, for the rest of my life. Like when I’m 80 and a nurse is removing my bedpan and asks why I’ve got a tattoo of Walter Matthau on my back.

Cheeky mare. The problem with people who ask about tattoos is that they are invariably blessed with the conversational agility of a Jutland pig farmer.

I therefore thank people who place them discreetly, because let’s face it, if you get stuck in a lift with Zombie Boy or Lizardman for an hour, what else are you going to talk about?

Salsa (see G9 for details of this weekend’s festival) can be a bit of a conversation killer as well. Talk to somebody who regularly attends salsa events and there’s always that sense of disappointment when the conversation dares to approach anything else that isn’t sexy, sultry, good for you, and – what’s more guys! – a fun way to burn off the calories you put on in the first place watching reruns of Vild med Dans.

So, it’s a hard choice this weekend and might come down to how you like your ladies. Hat-wearing, Latin or painted – be careful and don’t drink too much or you could wake up with an empty wallet, a pulled groin, or a new conversationstarter on your forehead.

Could be worse: you could wake up with Zombie Boy.

But that is exactly what’s on tap at the Copenhagen Ink Festival, when 150 of the world’s best tattoo artists will fill Tap1 and apply their skills to the skin of those in attendance.

Only in its second year, the Copenhagen Ink Festival has already earned a reputation as one of Europe’s best tattoo conventions. Based on the success of its inaugural event last year, the pressure is on the festival’s organisers to step it up.

To do so, British tattoo artist Alex – who has been based in Copenhagen for the past eleven years – has called in the big guns in the form of reputed artists such as Nikko Hurtado, Bob Tyrell and Carlos Torres. And for further star power, the three-day festival will include appearances from ‘it’ boy of the moment, Zombie Boy. Shooting to fame thanks to an appearance in Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’, Zombie Boy is now a star in the fashion world, walking catwalks worldwide and as the focus of a major campaign from L’Oreal. Born Rick Genest in Quebec, Canada, the 26-year-old has spent the last seven years – and $17,000 and count-

Incorporating stand-up comedy, magic, drag queens, sketches, opera and music medleys, this will be a fun variety show, whether you take advantage of the free bar or not.

Zombie Boy will be joined on the entertainment stage by Lucky Hell, “the modern day sword-swallowing painted lady”. An American now based in Finland, Lucky Hell combines elements of old school freakshows with a heavy dose of sex appeal.

But lest you think that the Ink Festival will be an x-rated affair, Alex insists that this will be a family-friendly event. On Thursday night, before the festival kicks off, the tattoo artists will be at Hard Rock Cafe for a meetand-greet party where they will work together to create a painting that will be auctioned off to raise funds for the children’s cancer charity, Børnecancerfonden.

The focus of the event itself is not so much the freakshow element as it is highlighting “the serious side of tattooing”. And with 17 years of tattooing, and ten years of working conventions, Alex knows how to put on a good event.

“The idea with this was to take the best of every show I have been to and incorporate them into one: the best artists, great entertainment and a fantastic atmosphere,” he said from the trophy room of his central Copenhagen tattoo studio, Rites of Passage. “Conventions for me have always been about meeting other artists and exchanging ideas, as well as showing what you can do and trying to make a name for yourself. My years of doing this have not only won me almost 100 awards, but also given me the opportunity to meet some

On hand to give tattoos over the weekend – Alex estimates somewhere in the neighbourhood of 500-600 tattoos will be done on site – will be artists from 25 different countries. But with 17 Danish artists present, it will also be a chance to showcase plenty of homegrown talent. Don’t expect, however, to see the stars of the reality programme ‘Tattoo Salen’, a Danish knock-off of popular American tattooing shows like ‘Miami Ink’. Alex said that shows like that only serve to reinforce the negative stereotypes associated with tattoos.

“We think it’s also important to show the general public what tattooing is really about and let them experience it first hand,” he said.

“Tattooing gets too much bad press, and some of the TV shows out there make a mockery of an age-old art form.”

He also said that these days it has become too easy to simply buy some equipment and declare yourself a tattoo artist. That in turn leads to poor tattoos. With the Copenhagen Ink Festival, those who are lucky enough to have booked a time with one of the visiting artists can be assured that they are getting some of the best inkwork available. And if you’re just there to look, that’s fine too.

“With the festival, part of our aim is to educate people to do the proper research and find the right artist for the tattoo that you want – and to make sure things are done at a quality level,” Alex said.

It’s not for the purists, but rather a bold introduction to a new crowd of classical music groupies. Incorporating water cascading from out of nowhere, the cast of singers are literally gurgling their lyrics underwater. Imagine thousands of people crammed into your bathroom watching you sing along to Mozart renditions while splashing around in the tub. EB

EVERYBODY’S a punter on Irish Day at the Races at Klampenborg Racecourse, and most tap into their inner Irish – even if they don’t have any traceable DNA. As well as the racing, you can expect snappy Irish dancing from the Dark Green School of Irish Dancing, stirring tunes from the Gordon Pipes and Drums Marching Band, and traditional Irish music. And apparently there will even be some river dancing.

All this may move you to putting a few kroner on a hunch, or perhaps you’re the type to study up in advance, and have a filly’s or stallion’s bloodline history in mind, and a carefully constructed chart in your back pocket. Just like everyone finds a little bit of Irish ancestry on St Patrick’s Day, you will undoubtedly find

your good-to-go-green betting proclivity when the excitement of the wagering starts, and you see some of the great-looking specimens parading before you. The gates open at 12:30, and there will be eight horse races, including the Danish 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas Trials – important prep races for young horses like these three-year-olds.

Children are most welcome, and activities designed especially for them are balloon blowing, pony riding, face painting, and a playground. For adults, count on the Irish Rover Pub, which will take over Hojen, the racecourse bar. It opens at 2pm with hot and cold food, drinks, Irish coffee, Guiness, Magners Irish Cider and a full range of other beers on draft. They need to be stocked given that the average crowd tends to be 6,000.

For what seems like years now, the Rover has been offering a prize of two tickets to Dublin for the Best Ladies Hat. The judge of all that will be no less than the Irish ambassador, Brendan Scallon. Let’s call it a Celtic (Danish) answer to the traditional British Ascot Day. And a special Irish radio sportscaster originally from Ireland, Annette Lennon, will be calling the races.

If you anticipate any difficulty finding your way to the course, the Irish Rover’s free coach will leave the pub at 12.30

Several of the artists, including the curator, are involved in New York’s tattoo culture, either working as tattoo artists or employing tattoo imagery in their work. HE NAME Ryan Adams has long been synonymous with drama and controversy. Not to be confused with his nearnamesake, Bryan Adams – the dude with that cheesy song from Robin Hood – this Adams has been through it all: from personal to artistic crises, and from feuds with a former record label to a career-threatening ear disorder, Ménière’s disease. With the release of his latest album, Ashes & Fire, he seems to have gone full-circle and taken the final step towards reclaiming his spot as one of the world’s most significant singer-songwriters. His transformation can be witnessed on Monday when he takes the stage at Falconer Salen.

Adams is one of the most acclaimed musical performers of our time. There is no doubt about his talent and ability as a singer, songwriter, musician, producer and writer. His repertoire is as impressive as it is eclectic, as he has collaborated with a remarkable string of artists including Norah Jones, Weezer and the Counting Crows. He has also spent some time in the producer’s chair, working on albums for country icon Willie Nelson and rocker Jesse Malin. A true creative soul, Adams has also dabbled in prose and poetry, having authored a book of poems, Infinity Blues, and a collection of short-stories and poems entitled Hello Sunshine.

The 37-year-old American began his musical career in 1994 with the band Whiskeytown, who managed to release three albums and achieve considerable success before their disbandment in 2000. A North Carolina native, he grew up with country music, and his youthful interest in punk gave Whiskeytown its very own alternativecountry expression, which has partly

lived on in his solo career, although he eventually acquired the more traditional singer-songwriter vibe that we all know and love.

His debut album as a solo performer − Heartbreaker in 2000 − immediately established him as a force to be reckoned with and was praised by both critics and fans. In the subsequent years, Adams put out one album after another, solidifying his place in the alternative-country genre and securing a loyal fan-base. In 2005, he joined forces with backing band, The Cardinals – a union that would last until 2010.

Currently touring in support of Ashes & Fire, the record is, as the title suggests, something of a rebirth for Adams, which seems to work well for both fans and critics. Gaffa − Denmark’s biggest music magazine – gave the album five out of six stars.

Adams is no stranger to Danish audiences. In fact, he visited the country rather recently when he played at the Concert Hall in Aarhus on November 13. The show still has fans buzzing and Gaffa gave the event six stars, calling the performance “masterful – nothing less”. The concert lasted well over two hours, with an amusing and energetic Adams playing beautifully and telling jokes in between songs. You might want to wear comfortable shoes, just in case his next performance lasts anywhere near the same amount of time. You are also strongly advised to keep any and all photographic or recording devices away from the show – a request made

by Adams himself, as he is not keen on having his picture taken during the performance. Based on his past shows in Denmark, his upcoming concert will be nothing short of magical.

Adams will also guest at DR Concert Hall on June 14. The evening is entitled ‘Ryan Adams – An Acoustic Performance at the Concert Hall’ and should prove to be a first class intimate concert experience.

Tivoli; 19:00; 95kr Regarded as one of Denmark’s quirkier pop bands, Alphabeat’s sugary pop-rock has experienced success all over the continent, topping the charts in Denmark, the Netherlands and even getting into the UK’s Top 20. Best known for their summery hit ‘Boyfriend’, the Danes’ ‘80s inspired hits have ruled radio station P3’s play-list since their conception back in the mid ‘00s.

Often featuring on the cover of teen pop magazines, this is definitely one for the younger crowd, and the stage couldn’t be more perfect in the heart of Copenhagen’s number one theme park.

first heard of Michael Kiwanuka late last year when he appeared on Jools Holland’s show, performing a mellow version of ‘Tell Me A Tale’, the first track off his only studio album. What struck me more than anything else about the London-born musician was the sheer weight and power of his voice, which led me to draw immediate comparisons with ‘60s sensation Otis Reading.

Kiwanuka has come a long way since that performance, winning the prestigious BBC Sound of 2012 award earlier this year on the basis of a solitary album, the highly-hyped Home Again, joining the likes of Adele, Ellie Goulding and Mika – all of whom have previously won the award. His debut on Danish soil on Friday night was a show to remember – an experience that makes it easy to see why he is so

Amager Bio; 20:30; 275kr Emerging in 1991 with Volume One, the Californian-based group described as the “ultimate stoner band” became legends practically overnight. The smell of marijuana smoke still excretes from their warped records, with nostalgic echoes of the early ‘90s heavy rock scene reminiscent in their timeless, drawn-out heavy guitar solos. With two of the founding members, Matt Pike and Al Cisneros, reuniting in 2009 for a number of impromptu gigs, the band’s future still remains, as ever, hazy, so be sure to cash in on this show since it may well be their last appearance in Copenhagen.

Koncerthuset; 21:00; 245-295kr The Danish rock-duo of Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo offer a loud, electric guitarbased cathartic rock sound. An overwhelming number of effect pedals, catchy vocals and some flamboyant on-stage bravado used to be their bag. Nowadays their creative juices appear to have run dry and are seemingly a shadow of their former selves.

Still, the band have no problem selling out arena-sized venues – presumably bought by fans still enamoured by their original material – so if you’re a fan move in swiftly.

Donkeyboy

Lille Vega; 21:00; 185kr Hailed as one of the most successful Scandinavian acts in pop history, Donkeyboy are the creators of the dancefloor anthem ‘City Boy’. Formed in Drammen, Norway in the mid‘00s, the five-piece have melded all of the chintzy highlights of European dance music together into a neat, upbeat package.

Openly commercial, their pop tunes aren’t exactly groundbreaking, but the recent release of their second record, Silver Moon (2012), coupled with their incredible popularity in Copenhagen, will surely lead to a sold-out show.

Lille Vega; 21:00; 130kr The Southampton trio jigsaw together all of the best bits of indie-rock and turn them into revved-up ballsy tunes. Their influences do however at times become a touch too obvious with Russell Marsden’s vocals occasionally sounding reminiscent of Jack White, the guitar hooks sounding dangerously similar to The Kills, while Black Keysinfluence bridges fill in the gaps.

No surprise their new record Sweet Sour (2012) went straight into the UK top 20. Still, there’s no denying that the Brits lack pure originality, even if their music is incredibly catchy.

Nightlife Porter Robinson

Rust; Tonight (May 3) 22:00; Free Adm Aged just 19, the American electronic-house music producer has already made giant strides in the industry. Beginning at just 12 years old, his career has exploded during the last few years, whether it’s supporting dance heavyweights such as Tiesto, or being commissioned by the likes of Lady Gaga, Interpartysystem and Avicii to remix their own pop tunes. Making dancefloors around the world drool, his synth-heavy mixes are perfectly engineered to get the blood flowing. Releasing his debut record, Spitfire, last year, his addictive remixes are about to fill the ears of hedonistic festival-goers over the next few months, with stages booked all over Europe and the States.

Definitely a good way to start the weekend early.

Fronted by the half-Danish, heavily-inked vocalist Lars Erik Frederiksen, the trio are some of the last surviving real punks left on the planet – after John Lydon featured in a British television advertisement for butter a couple of years back, most punks were led to believe that the revolution was all but over. Old Firm Casuals highlight that old-school punk is still very much alive.

His obscure mixes flirt with the idea of being ‘electronic jazz compositions’. Also headlining is Ostgut Ton’s Fengler, a dedicated techno figure who’s equally experimental and forward-looking with his steady-paced mixes.

A second singer who has stood the test of time is Canadian singer, songwriter, poet, musician, and novelist Leonard Cohen. The guy was born in 1934, but his fan base certainly isn’t of the old and crusty variety. Cohen has moved along with the times swimmingly, drawing a long trail of motley converts in his wake. Cohen’s recording career started in the 1960s while floating in the same circles as Andy Warhol, Joni Mitchell and the like.

Originally turning to music because he was dissatisfied with his pay check as a writer, Cohen has since been inducted into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. AFTER A GREAT turnout last year, the Copenhagen Salsa Festival is back. Continuing over the weekend, this festival is absolutely jam-packed with workshops, shows and parties.

There are 36 workshops on offer in different salsa styles and at four levels: beginner, intermediate, advanced and master class. Organisers say the goal of the Copenhagen Salsa Festival is to create an event that caters for everyone regardless of experience, dance level and style. Organisers want everyone to feel welcome and to believe that they can develop their dancing whilst sharing a good social experience in an open and budding atmosphere.

These workshops will be presented by some of the world’s best instructors and the festival will provide the perfect framework for improving and experiencing something new, all the while watching lots of great shows and dancing.

All the instructors are of the highest quality and have been invited to the festival not only because they are fantastic dancers but also due to their impeccable teaching abilities and their desire to communicate and share their dance - not only at the workshops but also at the parties.

Beginning Friday, the festival kicks off with a welcome party and various dance shows where people will have the opportunity to meet and of course dance with the instructors. This will take place at Kedelhallen in Frederiksberg.

On Saturday, the much-awaited workshops will finally begin. There will be an impressive 18 workshops on this day, each an hour in duration. For the true beginners there are two classes to choose from on the day, both being held from 11am-midday.

For those who struggle to stay in time with the music there are ‘salsa timing and music interpretation’ classes, which will be taught by Susana Montero - one of the premier teachers, dancers and choreographers in the UK and abroad. She has twice been crowned ‘British Salsa Champion’ as well as being awarded ‘Best Dance Performer and Teacher in the UK’ several times in the last 15 years.

For those who have their rhythm in time but are looking to spice up their dance style, there is ‘Cuban partner work’, which will be taught by one of Cuba’s most infamous dancers, choreographers and dance instructors, Juan Jose Ortiz.

Also available on Saturday are workshops such as ‘foot work and body movement’, ‘Cuban rumba’, ‘partner work cha cha’ and many more.

Come Saturday night it’ll be time to practice new moves learnt throughout the day at the gala and show party that is also being held at Kedelhallen in Frederiksberg.

Hopefully the hangovers won’t be too bad come Sunday because there are many more workshops available on this day. The majority of workshops will suit those of all levels and include classics such as ‘partner work’, as well as more alternative workshops such as ‘Rueda De Casino’, ‘Salsango’ and ‘Pachanga’.

Sunday night it’ll be time to wrap up the festival and farewell new friends with a party where everyone will have the opportunity to show off their newly acquired skills. The farewell party will be held at Søpavillonen. With a huge range of workshops available, the Copenhagen Salsa Festival is sure to ignite the passions of Denmark’s salsa dancers. For those who prefer trying out their sexy moves out of class, there is always the party pass available for 400kr that provides access to all three of the parties.

I DISCOVERED this recipe quite a while ago and it has since become my go-to gourmet appetiser or hors d’oeuvre dish. The recipe is incredibly simple and easy to make, yet it delivers a surprisingly complex and delicious flavour.

There are several important elements in this recipe, which allow it to stand out when compared to other tapenade recipes. However, the addition of figs is the most important.

Traditionally, tapenade is made with anchovies, capers, and lemon (many of the other ingredients are the same as in this recipe, especially the olives). These are all relatively sour and bitter notes and I, myself, am not the biggest fan of traditional tapenade.

There are thought to be five basic tastes: bitter, sour, salty, sweet, and umami. There is a school of thought in cooking that asserts balance and harmony is achieved by combining the five tastes. And this recipe does just that, many times over.

The original recipe uses cream cheese but mentions you can use goat cheese instead. I think cream cheese is too boring, but that’s an alternative.

I made several other minor changes, such as the serving style (individual) and doubling the amount of walnuts (love them!).

Finally, there’s the actual number of servings and size. It could easily be halved, but at this size it serves 12 (two slices per person).

Tucked away behind a hard-to-find door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS

Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a “best ever veal experience”) and the chocolate cake (“Oh My God”), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! Fig and Olive Tapenade 240 ml finely chopped dried figs 120 ml water 1 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar 1 tsp dried rosemary 1 tsp dried thyme ¼ tsp cayenne pepper 160 ml finely chopped kalamata olives 2 cloves garlic, minced salt and pepper to taste 160 ml chopped walnuts 180 g goat’s cheese, sliced 2 baguette rolls, in 24 slices COMBINE the figs and water in a saucepan over a medium heat. Bring to a boil. Cook the fig and water combination until the figs are tender and the liquid has reduced.

Remove from heat; stir in the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, rosemary, thyme and cayenne pepper. Add olives with the garlic and mix well.

Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Cover or transfer the tapenade to tupperware. Refrigerate for four hours or overnight to allow flavours to blend.

Heat the oven to 175 degrees.

Placed the sliced goat’s cheese on baking paper on top of a baking sheet.

Sprinkle each slice with salt and pepper. If there’s room, place chopped walnuts on the baking paper in order to toast. Also, to toast the bread, add the slices of baguette to the baking paper (or set up another baking pan; a rimmed baking sheet will also work with the bread, though I wouldn’t suggest it for the nuts or cheese).

Bake for 10 minutes - until cheese is just melted through the middle, the nuts lightly browned and fragrant, and baguette toasted. You can adjust the time according to what your toasty/melty preferences are.

Take a slice of baguette. Spread on cheese, then fig and olive tapenade, and finally sprinkle on toasted walnuts. Enjoy!

On our visit our favourites were the Dim Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. The main courses are substantial, honestly cooked and rich in taste and include Vienna schnitzel with baked new potatoes and coleslaw and chicken breast topped with apricots and cheese. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. From the fish and chip expat family nights at 17:00 on the last Friday of every month, to enjoying the Sunday roast (lamb, all the trimmings, just 99kr, kids portion for 58kr), they are always welcome. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day - serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, and upstairs there’s a new lounge area, which is the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. AK Kennedy’s Irish Bar Gammel Kongevej 23, 1610 Cph V; Open Mon-Sun 12:0002:00 It’s not an Irish pub. Instead it’s a pub owned by Irishmen, and there’s a big difference. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits.

Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH

It’s the perfect place for sports fans to mingle, or for live music which it provides every day. It also serves food all day from 10am to 10pm, and diners can find peace from the music and sport on a table overlooking the walking street, or on the first floor balcony overlooking Amagertorv. BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. WHENEVER a restaurant has been around for a while, one of two things usually happens. Either it becomes a bit old and dated, or it becomes an institution - a place that is loved and respected. Luckily for Copenhagen, LêLê nhà hàng falls into the latter category.

For ten years, LêLê’s has been providing affordable, yet high quality, Vietnamese cuisine and the queue of people waiting every day to get a seat is testament to this.

At LêLê’s, every detail co-ordinates perfectly to create an atmosphere that is Asian chic and yet relaxed, contemporary dining.

From the Tiger roof mural that greets you on your way in, to the high ceilings that house you within the dining room, this place has a certain ambience that makes you feel instantly at home.

To begin, we sampled one of the best cocktails I’ve ever tasted. Designed to be smooth like a Margarita, this little piece of liquid heaven contained vanilla, basil, lycee, chilli and rum that’s made on the premises.

It’s soft and sweet until the chilli hits you and then it really packs a punch that leaves the lips tingling for more.

To begin we had two starters. The Ca tai chanh was a lovely fresh sea bass tatar with chilli and lime, served with glasswort and watercress. The fish tasted extremely fresh and had a great sauce that really set off the flavours.

The Goi du du, which is a Saigonese papaya salad with beef and Vietnamese mint, was to die for. From the soft and crunchy textures, to the caramelised onion and beef, this salad was superb while the sauce was so tasty I wanted to drink it. It’s hard to believe that something healthy could taste so naughty.

LêLê’s also has a tasting menu, enabling diners to taste a little of lots of different things. We had the well-priced Dak Lak menu that had two wontons, two Vietnamese rolls, two Lat Lot rolls and four fresh rolls.

The turkey, crab meat and vegetable wontons were nice enough with crispy skins, but the turkey almost overpowered the crab.

The Vietnamese rolls with juicy pork and crab meat were pure deep-fried joy.

They are definitely one of the must-try dishes and are best enjoyed wrapped in the lettuce leaves and dipped in the gorgeous velvety fish sauce.

The Lat Lot rolls with beef and wild betel leaves were spicy but great for meat lovers, whilst the fresh rolls – two with raw marinated walleye in citrus and ginger and two with roast beef and papaya – were slightly

bitter tasting and I think may contain more than the menu states.

For the main we enjoyed the Thit Heo Quay, which is piglet in five spices, and Hanoi meat balls in green sticky rice served with pak choi in garlic and pumpkin tofu.

The piglet had amazing components but was sometimes quite chewy. The meatballs were super juicy and tasty and the garlic and pumpkin tofu didn’t lack taste either. The best part, however, was the small soft pieces of piglet that were scattered throughout the dish. These pieces were divine and melted in your mouth.

Ca Chien is Golden Dorado in a tamarind, ginger and mint sauce, banana blossom salad with fried shiitake mushroom, and jasmine rice. Unfortunately the fish was dry and tasted like it had been overcooked; however the ginger and mint sauce was super tasty and when everything is enjoyed together, it becomes a flavoursome dish.

For dessert we enjoyed Chocolate rolls with banana, served with ice cream and hazelnut crumbles and Green apple and lemongrass sorbet with guava cream. Both were extraordinary, especially the Chocolate rolls, and I’d easily visit again just for dessert.

On the whole, the staff are extremely knowledgeable and helpful, service is fast and friendly and you never feel like you’re being ignored. The presentation of all the dishes is beautiful and because everything looks fresh and healthy, the eyes melt long before you’ve even tasted anything. With generous portion sizes you get your money’s worth. LêLê’s only continues to step in the right direction and this is definitely one place you’ll want to keep coming back to for years to come.

I

HAVE SEEN many films over the last decade, but Journey To The Centre of the Earth (2008) starring Brendan Fraser was not one of them. Fortunately, this had little bearing on my enjoyment of its sequel Journey 2: The Mystery Island (see what they did there?) Both films have taken very loose inspiration from the classic works of Jules Verne, using the literature more like tourism guides rather than adapting any narrative in the conventional sense.

Teenager Sean (Hutcherson) is a true ‘Vernian’ – one who takes the works of Jules Verne literally. The type who Verne himself might have labelled an ‘imbécile’. Reluctantly allowing his ex-Navy stepdad (The Rock) to help him decipher an encrypted code from his grandfather (Caine), young Sean sets forth on an adventure that will lead him to the titular island: to miniature elephants, giant bees, true love and much father/ son/grandfather bonding. Aw. Groan.

Where to start? It’s difficult to point to just one image from the myriad of moments that effectively communicate this film’s essence – however, The Rock flying on a giant furry bee while getting covered in a tonne of avian fecal matter gets pretty close. Since his lead role as the Scorpion King (2002), the aptly named thespian talent we otherwise know

“Check how my biceps look when I’m playing the Banjo” and love as ex-wrestler Dwayne Johnson, has enjoyed a slippery downward trajectory. Admittedly, it has been a gentle incline because he’s been sliding for over a decade now, and shows little sign of reaching a bottom any time soon ...

It’s Michael Caine whose presence provides the biggest mystery. Surely he’s had his years in the creative wilderness – with all that work coming from Christopher Nolan, you’d think he could rest easy on his laurels and enjoy an early retirement from such artless noise. One can only conclude he was listening to the same inner

voice that ushered him forth into the world of politics, lending celebrity credibility to David Cameron’s 2010 campaign. Look how that turned out for the UK. This film though, is an even bigger mess. I like to think he thought it was James Cameron he was publicly supporting. If so, that makes sense since he likely made a similar mistake here: forgivable if you’re knocking 80 and not wearing your glasses (3D or otherwise) because at moments, this picture could closely resemble Avatar, what with all those colourful creatures and neon fauna.

All except for the clanging fact that

it isn’t – it’s islands away from Avatar.

Or Jurasic Park. Or Raiders of The Lost Ark. Or any of the other big money spinners – the success of which this film’s army of exec producers are cynically aiming to emulate. It would be more appropriately titled Avatarded.

During the film’s climax Sir Michael is seen flailing around in a briny green screen ocean and I’m reminded of his other dip into cinematic waters: JAWS 4. Mystery solved then. Clearly he has a penchant for island-based, monster-movie sequels.

And shameless cash-ins.

The CGI is serviceable and to

be fair, it’s all good natured enough – but it’s brain dead. The dialogue smarts and the laughs, while present, are all unintentional. It’s one of those 50kr family adventure movies that you might consider picking up from the DVD box on the counter in the gas station if only to keep the kids entertained for the rest of the drive.

My advice would be: DON’T. Your kids may seem to enjoy it – providing they’re under nine (apologies to certain 0-9-year-olds) but the damage won’t be outwardly visible. When they subsequently grow up to be Avatarded, don’t blame me.

ERRAFERMA IS a 2011 Italian film directed by Emanuele Crialese. It is the most recent in his career and sconed him a Special Jury Award at the Venice Film Festival. It tackles touchy subjects like illegal immigration, survival and our own decisions which influ-

ence the lives of others and lay bare our moral spine. Ethics and difficult choices of moral nature are the main themes Terraferma deals with, and, but it does not provide any answers nor does it try to preach.

The film is slow paced; it takes its time presenting and familiarising the audience with Linosa – the island and place of action – and the people who live there. However, it never makes you want to check the time during the screening. Since the characters live off fishing and tourists coming to their island every summer, the sea also plays a big part in the film, and it is beautiful. It’s a life source for

the islanders, a vacation spot for the tourists and a passageway to safety for the African immigrants.

It’s a simple, character driven story, focusing on one family, but through them, showing the plight of all fishermen of that region – striving to provide for their families and trying to live by their own set of moral rules, which do not always overlap with the government’s laws (Help drowning people? No? Ooh, because they’re not legal. Gotcha!)

The characters are believable and likeable and develop, change and grow throughout the film. It’s a big feat in the flood of films that provide only stock characters,

with one-liners that define them and have nothing else to them but that.

Terraferma is constructed on stark contrasts and juxtapositions: the peaceful sea and desolate land; the carefree tourists and the terrified immigrants; wealth and poverty and so on.

It’s quietly powerful without any tacky effects. It probably won’t appeal to everyone, precisely because of that though. It’s for people willing to be patient and for those which are interested in rural Italy, sea and moral struggles depicted in film.

It will make any recent films seem trivial and tame, a strange and unique beast indeed. It’s mature drama, bravely tackling complicated subject matter for those looking to experience something different. It’s original, visceral and disquieting - in the way only cinema can be. MW

A man-made monster may well be a feature retained from the original series, however in this case the man is Burton and the monster is Dark Shadows. AS

Avoid like the Plague Battleship (15) Dir: Peter Berg; US sci-fi action, 2012, 130 mins; Alexander Skarsgård, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson This film is terribly clichéd, the characters are generally underdeveloped, the acting was bad, and there basically is no storyline. LD

Haywire (15) Dir: Steven Soderbergh; US action, 2011, 93 mins; Gina Carano, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender Sadly, this film has come too soon for Carano, who undoubtly has promise. She needs to fine-tune her delivery, learn her craft in a few supporting parts, and her break will come in a superhero flick. And as for Soderbergh, this film came along too late. Five years ago, it would have been slick and cool and we would all been praising a work of ‘minimalista azione’. BH

W.E. (7) Dir: Madonna; US drama, 2012, 120 mins; Abbie Cornish, Andrea Riseborough, James D’Arcy W.E. is Madonna’s second attampt at filmmaking and, even if it’s visually and technically better than the previous one, it’s still miles away from being a genuinely good piece of cinema. DC

Iron Sky (15) Dir: Timo Vuorensolas; Fin/ Aus/Ger action/com, 2012, 93 mins; Julia Dietze, Götz Otto, Christopher Kirby, Peta Sergeant Iron Sky has proved that the studio system has its uses; this script would likely have seen a drafts before getting greenlit. As it is, Vuorensolas goosestepped out of obsecurity and right into the cine-scheisse.

Not to knock the monumental achievement of assembling this huge production, but just because you can, doesn’t necessarily mean you should. MW

Also Playing The Iron Lady (3) Dir: Phyllida Lloyed; UK/ Fra drama, 2012, 105 mins; Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent, Olivia Colman, Richard E Grant From the first frame there’s a growing awareness that our perceptions of this woman are being gently and skilfully manipulated by director Phyllida Lloyd and screenwriter Abi Morgan, so much so that regardless of your political persuasion you’d have to be resolutely stubborn or emotionally retarded in failing to be moved by this biopic.

Nevertheless, Margaret Thatcher is full blooded; she lives and breathes before your eyes. MW

It is also the epic story of the peaceful quest of the woman who is at the core of Burma’s democracy movement. Besson does draw the best out of his two leads, and the subject is an extraordinary woman. So why is it such an ordinary film? MH

As they learn to control their abilities and use them to their advantage, their lives start to spin out of control, and their darker sides begin to take over. This film puts a fresh spin on the superhero origin story, a tale Hollywood spins again and again. MH

But Kevin is just getting started, and his final act will be beyond anything anyone imagined. It’s not an easy story to tell, but the filmmakers do it well. MH

THE NAME Amon Goeth might not ring an immediate bell, but on the AFI’s list of the top 50 film villains of all time, he ranked the highest non-fictional baddie. As commander of the Kraków-Płaszów concentration camp, he personally killed over 500 people – many of whom he did indeed shoot for sport - as portrayed by Ralph Fiennes in Schindler’s List. Inheritance is the story of his daughter’s search for acceptance, 60 years after his hanging.

Dougray Scott’s character in Father & Son (BBC Ent, Sat 20:35) also seeks closure - his criminal past was to blame for the death of his wife. Set in Dublin and Manchester, it’s a gritty, well-crafted thriller.

Hopefully the same will be true of the FA Cup Final and Europa League Final (TV3+, Wed 20:00),

while in the Premiership, K6 has possible title deciders Newcastle United vs Manchester City and Manchester Utd vs Swansea City (from Sun 14:00), and relegation clash Wigan Athletic vs Blackburn Rovers (Mon 21:00). And don’t forget the World Snooker Championship final (Eurosport, Sun & Mon) and the first stage of Giro D’Italia (Eurosport, Sat 15:30), which this year is in Jutland.

Elsewhere, we’ve always suspected the guy who made Super Size Me is rubbish, and advertising ‘expose’ The Greatest Movie Ever Sold (SV1, Tue 22:00) proves it; Blue Mountain State (TV3+, Tue 21:00) is a US college football comedy of the same ilk as Porky’s; there’s another chance to see Kate Winslet snoozer Mildred Pierce (TV3 Puls,

Mon 22:05) and the excellent second series of Sherlock (DR1, Sat 21:45); Stan Lee’s Superhumans (DRHD, Mon 20:00) sees the superhero creator track down freaks of nature; watch Munich Theatre’s 2005 version of Donizetti’s Roberto Devereux (DRK, Sat 20:00); Bill Bailey: Tinselworm (BBC Entertainment, Thu 22:00) is strongest DRK, Sat 22:15 Inheritance when the British comedian experiments with music; avoid awful vampire series The Gates (TV2 Zulu, Sun 11:05); and Simon Cowell, a guest on the Jonathan Ross Show (SV1, Sat 23:35), would enjoy Afghan Star (DR2, Tue 21:00), a doc about the country’s first ever TV singing contest – which for many voters was their first ever experience of democracy.
