BEN HAMILTON

THE PLANS to stage this city’s first proper celebration of St George’s Day are coming together thanks to the hard work of Martin Popplewell, the landlord of Sankt Nikolai pub and restaurant, a newly-opened traditional English boozer on Nikolajgade in the city centre (www.sanktnikolai.dk). Unlike St George of Palestine, Martin is a proud Englishman, but not too haughty to take to the streets in his bid to bring his patron saint’s day to the Copenhagen public. Undeterred by his failure to find a horse (touch wood, Richard III was shortly slain after his), Martin, between 5:30 and 6pm on Monday April 23, will be Monty Pythoning it around the fountain outside the Dubliner with his head barman Jon. For those of you who don’t know who the ‘Knights who say Ni’ are, that means Martin (swapping King Arthur for St George) will be pretending to ride a horse to a coconut-shell soundtrack supplied by hunchbacked Jon.

And this moment of street theatre is a mere appetiser for the main event, the saving of the damsel in distress (please, not another male member of the bar stuff) and slaying of the dragon outside Nikolai Church between 18:00 and 19:00, after which proceedings will continue at the pub with lashings of Somerset cider and a new cask ale - the start of a new initiative that will see Sankt Nikolai introduce a new one every Thursday night - and servings of Lancashire Hot Pot, Fish ‘n’ Chips and Cornish Pasties. To be fair, most of this is available on any day at the pub, which has already in its short existence developed a good reputation for being the closest this city has to a proper English pub. But being off the beat and track, it doesn’t get much passing tourist trade and badly needs fellow Anglos and Anglophiles to turn up and find out what all the fuss is about. Meanwhile, this week’s highlights are either seasonal – Easter (see G2 for events) and the Thai festival of Songkran (G9) – or cinematic: be it the start of CPH:PIX (see G3) or finally the chance to see ‘Armadillo’ in English, courtesy of Cinemateket (see G9). It’s a great start to a fun month, which with George’s Day coming up, will only get better.

Starts Thursday 5 April, ends Monday 9 April; all over Greater Cph IT’S EASTER time which means the city is full of fun activities for kids and their parents. Some of the traditional Danish traditions include making a ‘gækkebrev’ – a decorated letter sent at Easter containing a riddle – that you send to someone you know. If the person you send it to guesses who you are, you have to give them an Easter egg, but if they don’t guess it before Easter ends, they owe you one, so you better make it a difficult riddle. Other traditions revolve around the Easter egg: you can colour eggs, run with them, go on egg hunts and obviously eat ones made of chocolate. Experience the different traditions around the city.

After the tour you can join the egg hunt around the castle and if you find them all, you’re placed in the draw for a nice prize. At the Easter workshop you can make your own ’gækkebrev’ - inspired by Leonora Christina and Christinas 4 - with your own riddle. The festival centres greatly on new and upcoming filmmakers with a special ‘New Talent’ award for debutants. This carries a considerable cash prize to help with the filmmaker’s next film. Easter time is ... Saturday:

Copenhagen Ska Convention 2012 Loppen Friday - Sunday; 60kr www.loppen.dk

E

aster marks that time of the year wheen we are supposed to think about religion, penance and repentance. But who said we can’t do all that while grooving to the beats of ska? Loppen invites you to have a jammin’ Easter at the annual Copenhagen Ska Convention. Founded in 2001, the Copenhagen Ska Convention has introduced many national and international ska and reggae bands to Danish audiences. Each night features four bands. Check out this year’s headliners:

Friday Dave Barker is a veteran Jamaican artist from Franklyn Town, Kingston. Born David Crooks in 1948, Barker was a member of ‘60s group The Techniques and half of the duo Dave and Ansell Collins. He is a reggae and rocksteady singer and has made a string of solo albums. His performance should be classic. The Caroloregians are a band from Charleroi, Belgium. Their sound is a funky mix of ska and reggae and their stage performance is dynamic and entertaining – just the ticket for celebrating the holiday in style. 65 Mines Street come from Franche-Comté, France. Their music is a blend of ska and reggae, with a hint of surf and punk. The band includes members from fellow French ska acts Two Tone Club and Taste in Vibes and punk/rock act The Rebel Assholes. Their debut album was released in September 2010. One More Than 12 are a reggae/ska band from Roskilde. With no less than 13 members (hence the name), the band are a ska army that have played venues all over Denmark, from Copenhagen’s Lille Vega to Roskilde Festival’s Orange Camp to Elværket in Helsingør.

The Valkyrians are considered to be Finland´s most successful ska/rocksteady band. Their inspiration comes from ‘60s Jamaican music and the British Two Tone movement of the ’70s and ’80s. The band adds their personal pop sensibility to the mix, resulting in an energetic brand of dance music. Sharing their name with a classic Nintendo game, The Blaster Master are a punk/reggae/ska band, also from Finland. Their sound is influenced by modern post-Two Tone ska and can be compared to The Specials, Madness, Three Minute Warning and The Toasters. Patchanka are a local band from Copenhagen. They play a mix of punk, reggae and ska, with musical influences from Latin America, Jamaica, the Balkans and the European punk-rock scene. The members have Danish, Spanish, Indian and Italian roots and their live performance is spirited and fun, creating a party atmosphere at every venue. Larica are an eight-piece ska orchestra from Næstved, Denmark. Their music is third wave ska, inspired by Jamaican and Latin American culture, both musically and lyrically. The songs focus on saxophone melodies and the lyrics revolve around a critical outlook on modern society, sung in both Danish and Portuguese.

Sunday: Judge Dread Memorial have an interesting story. In 2011, the Upsessions (see below) met the singer Flo at one of their shows in Austria and his talent gave the band the idea to pay tribute to the deceased Judge Dread – the first white artist ever to have a reggae hit in Jamaica. Judge Dread Memorial play Judge Dread’s biggest hits, from ‘Big Six’ to ‘Ska Fever’. The Upsessions are a Dutch band from Harlem, Amsterdam. Founded in 2005, they play reggae from the ‘60s. By 2006, they managed to get signed by legendary UK ska record label MoonSkaWorld. They are no strangers to the stage, having played some of the biggest ska festivals in Europe, including Germany’s Potsdammer Skafest and Spain’s RudeCat. Teknisk Uheld (Technical Accident) are a Danish band from Roskilde. Founded in 2004 by a group of schoolmates and friends, their music is inspired by ska, dancehall and reggae, mixed with punk, hip-hop and swing. Their Danish-language lyrics are a reflection on modern society. They have played all over Denmark, as well as in Sweden, Russia, Austria, Luxembourg and Canada. Traphiklys (Traffic light) are also Danish and they play reggae and ska, mixed with funk, jazz and rap. They are an energetic band that are at their best when on stage. Claudia Santos

Review Helmet

HHHHHH

March 24 Store Vega “We’re gonna play one more song and then Helmet are gonna come and f*cking destroy you,” forewarned the lead singer of warm-up band, Fighting With Wire. How right he was. As Helmet prepared to take the stage, slowly but surely, the crowd grew to double - if not triple – the size, making Lille Vega feel truly intimate. From the balcony, I watched eagerly. I thought about Helmet’s long road and nostalgia set in. It was like a reunion of old friends, united by their love of not only Helmet but also alternative music from the ‘90s. From where I stood, the crowd looked like sardines in a can, ready to honour Helmet the best they knew how – by rocking out hard. Their enthusiasm was visible and contagious, as they chanted to get the band to come out. I may have come to the concert solo, but I was

Pato Siebenhaar

Templet; 21:00; 80kr Aa a major player on Copenhagen’s dance music scene and nightlife playing regularly at Kødbyen’s clubs, and trendy bars about the town, the bearded Siebenhaar is gaining a cult reputation for his percussive tunes with his face popping up on posters all over the town. Being played increasingly more on popular radio station P3 – particularly his hit single ‘Go For It’ – his good vibrations will most likely result in leading to an early start to the weekend.

I Go Shout Plenty

Global; 21:00; 60kr (40kr students) I Go Shout Plenty is an evening dedicated to Afrobeat music hosted by the Nørrebro-based afrobeat-group WhoAreYouPeople? (pictured). A huge live band at 14 members strong, they are bursting with energy and offer an upbeat musical experience unlike any other in the city tonight. Even though the doors open at 20:00, it’s likely the party will run late into the night. On every club evening, the band has guest bands and/or guest DJs. This time around it will be the Swedish eccentrics RustyBeat and a couple of local DJs in the form of Anttikulapo and Søren Skov.

Nipsey Hussle

Lille Vega; 21:00; 160kr One of LA’s up-and-coming stars, Ermias Asghedom (aka Nipsey) is an imaginative rapper with the street background to match his bad-boy image. Growing up on a diet of rap-lords such as Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube and the WuTang Clan, Nipsey has a deep understanding of his genre and uses rap to vent his disillusionment with the conditions of the lower echelons of American society. His latest offering, The Marahton Continues (2011), led to the rap media taking a serious interest in the young prospect. As a result, Nipsey became something of a cult figure overnight and now has gigs booked worldwide.

definitely not alone. Helmet finally showed up and suddenly nothing else mattered. ‘It’s Easy to Get Bored’, from their 1997 album Aftertaste, was the first song of the evening and the venue was cooking. By the third song, there was crowd-surfing – a beautiful sight – symbolising what everyone was feeling: the kind of adrenaline rush that only a good live performance can provide. Templet; 21:00; 80kr Fronted by Copenhagen-based artist Brian Batz and members of another of the city’s emerging indie bands, Cody, SPP are one of Denmark’s most exciting electro prospects. Their somewhat dark, melancholic and hypnotic slant on electro produces original results, often reminiscent of a subdued Animal Collective. Their debut album, Speed of Sound/ Alarm Music, was given a five star rating by heavyweight music publication Soundvenue. Even though Templet is a little further out of town than the venue they played last week, it’ll be the last chance for Copenhageners to see the group before early summer.

Naja Rosa

Lille Vega; 21:00; 160kr Rosa originally started out as part of her parents’ band, Savage Rose, back in the ‘90s. Rosa reinvented herself as a solo artist, releasing her self-titled debut album last year – a showing of her unrestrained, boundless creativity. Her seamless brand of pop combines jazz, blues, gospel and rock elements into radio-friendly, rhythmic and catchy compositions. Having a peculiarly magnetising effect, her music is to be distinguished from glib mainstream pop, with her diverse vocal style adding an original dimension to her music.

Summer Camp

Rust; 21:00; 80kr Hailing from London, the duo offer a nostalgic, refreshing and adorable indie sound that sees the folktronica influence of Jeremy Warmsley collide beautifully with Elizabeth Sankey’s gentle, yet pervasive vocal style. Originally one of Jeremy Warmsley’s most intriguing side-projects, Summer Camp has now become his main focus. With the release of their debut record, Welcome To Condale (2011) capturing the imagination of the British music media, the group are now touring Europe with a batch of chirpy tunes to plug. Nightlife Steffi & Virginia

Culture Box; Sat 23:00; 70kr A venue for Copenhagen’s nocturnal weekenders, Culture Box’s monthly record label night, Sound of Berghain, showcases some of the finest techno, house and dance acts on the continent. Tonight’s set will be led by one of the leading contemporaries on the club scene, Steffi, who’s built up both her reputation and inventory of equipment since become a resident DJ in Berlin in 2007. Flanked by singersongwriter/DJ Virginia, who has her feet firmly grounded in the electronic music scene, this will be a magnet for electro fans on the town tonight.

Tigerblod

Bakken; Sat 23:00; Free Adm A club night for those into ur-

ban music and jungle beats, tonight’s set will be led by the master of ceremonies, Risikoen (aka Casper Sennewald), and a hiphop army that includes Martin Beech Pedersen and Electric Lady Lab, with a DJ battle between P3 radio-DJ Camilla Jane Lea and Lulu Rouge to top the night off. Bakken is a torchbearer for Kødbyen’s trendy reputation and never fails to deliver an authentic experience. Heading into the long holiday weekend, Kødbyen will be one of the city’s most popular destinations, so be sure to get ahead of the crowd and turn up a little before 23:00.

Rub A’Dub

Stengade; Sun 22:00; 50kr Having run every single Sunday for over nine years, RubA’Dub continues to be the most popular reggae gathering in the country. Dubbed as Copenhagen’s loudest Sunday club night, tonight welcomes to the fore some of its popular resident DJs, including Pharfar and Pappa Aron, plus a crew of special guests invited along to spice up the sets a little. Ever since he was old enough to put dirt in his mouth, Erik B Duckert has been attracted to the ground level and below. The attraction of the underground, he says, is that: “When you’re looking at a city from its gutters, you see both the faeces and the silk.” His favourite sewers are those of Copenhagen and in particular those of Nørrebro and Amager, but any place where trash is tossed and skirts are worn, he will want to rest his eyes and say his peace.

Danish Porn is a good example of a book that plays on the boundaries of various taboos: it’s a history book that you can’t really place in the library, and a porno mag

you can’t really be embarrassed about: it’s educational and arousing, it’s tragic and humouristic. Being in between all these different categories, Danish Porn offers a perfect opportunity to practice the fine art of everyday eroticism: buy it, keep it next to the glossy magazines in your living room and keep a straight face when your father-in-law picks it up and turns red – hey, it’s a history book, but just a damn nice one! Events

If you want to experience just a hint of what I’m talking about, take a walk down the gritty end of Istedgade. Feel how your attention automatically gets sucked towards the display windows, and feel at the same time how reluctant your head is to turning, and your body to stopping. Don’t look! Keep walking straight! Just peek from the corner of your eyes, otherwise you will break the spell. If you stop and stare, the suspense is over, and with a stroke of supposed bravery, you will have reduced the erotic experiment to a pornographic display, and you will quickly see why the hardened shop owners thought it necessary to add colorful lights to the flesh fest in the windows. Porn needs taboo to be interesting. When I shared my ‘pornographic thoughts’ with photographer Christian Bust, he told me that he knew a guy I had to talk to: Jon Nordstrøm, the man who might have figured out a way to get porn into the public libraries.

JOHN NORDSTRØM

IT WAS THE cheap flashing lights in the windows that made me think of it. On both sides of the Central Station end of Istedgade, the street is laced with porn shops and titty bars, and the displays in the windows leave nothing to the imagination: legs spread wide, pumped tits, rock-hard cocks, whips, humongous dildos and so on. The most intimate secrets of the human body totally exposed, but yet still the shop owners have had the urge to install those cheap plastic-tube lights that flash mechanically in the colours of the rainbow - why? Is porn really that uninteresting? When I was a young boy growing up in the countryside, porn was definitely not uninteresting, but not because of the small naked ‘paper-people’ in themselves. The pictures quickly became purely ... instrumental, and I’m sure I would have lost interest rather fast, if only it hadn’t been so damn ‘illegal’. The fact that no-one (except for a few select partners in crime, of course) could know, infused the rather silly occupation with tremendous significance. It was a secret, my secret. Without the persistent taboo, my porn collection would have easily slipped into the same shroud of indifference as the anatomy book at the far end of the school library did. You could look at the naked vaginas and penises in the anatomy book as much as you could stomach, but the cocks and pussies in the porn magazines had no place in the public education system; they were filth: sweet, forbidden filth - and thus stayed interesting.

Products like furniture, glass objects, jewellery and knitwear are both produced and sold on site. Karsten Lauritsen, a furniture designer, created the concept of the shop, which focuses solely on Danish design. Particularly popular are the shop’s ‘bean tables’ - a set of three tables that come in an array of colours. They are sized to fit nicely under each other with surfaces shaped like kidney beans. Other products include glass candleholders, decorative pillows, and sleek and colorful handmade ceramics. Dance-off NEW Stærekassen, August Bournonvilles Passage 5, Cph K; Fri & Sat evening; tickets 150kr, www. billetten.dk; www.5cicc.dk On these two nights you can follow ten of the world’s best choreographers competing in the Copenhagen International Choreography Competition. ‘Selfish’ Tom Rossau in action

Stil og Stemning Nyvej 19, Frederiksberg; open TueFri 12:00-17:30, Sat 12:00-14:00; 2339 3863; www.stilogstemningfrb.dk Located on a side street off Gammel Kongevej for over ten years, the wares displayed here are primarily old and Danish. The furniture, baskets, bed covers and ceramics have all been carefully chosen with an eye towards simplicity and the colour white. Some of the linens have classic gentle floral patterns, but light shades dominate and each item here seems perfectly suited to a life in candlelight. Ichinen Istedgade 59, Cph V; Mon-Fri 11:00-18:00, Sat 11:00-15:00; 5192 4717; www.tomrossau.dk Initially the shop carried clothing and a range of furniture designed by owner Tom Rossau, an entirely self-taught designer, but gradually lighting became his speciality and the shop reflects that. He works mainly with natural wood veneers and is entirely honest about his work. “The design process is actually quite selfish. It may be that in the end the consumer gets their needs covered, but in all honesty I do it for the kick that it gives me,” he says.

Kids Bamse, Luna and Kylling Falkoner Biografen, Sylows Allé 15, Frederiksberg; Sat 10:00-11:00; tickets 40kr; language Danish; 7013 1211; www. biobooking.dk; www.falkonerbio.dk; ages 0-8 The first time Bamse meets Luna, she thinks he’s dangerous, but of course he’s not. Bamse gets some magic fertiliser and tries to teach Kylling how to fly. An entertaining Bamse film for the youngest, who are allowed to run around and play while the movie is on. MSØ Water – a world of adventures Experimentarium, Tuborg Havnevej 7, Hellerup; opens Fri, Mon-Fri 09:30-17:99, Tue 09:3021:00, Sat and Sun 11:00-17:00; under 2s free, age 3-11 105kr, adult 160kr, students 105kr; contact 3927 3333 or info@experimentarium.dk This water adventure features more than 50 activities and experiments with water. But you shouldn’t be afraid of getting your clothes wet – unless you ask for it – as this is a “bone-dry ride through the wet element”. You get to fight the power of the sea, save someone who has fallen overboard from a ship and experience giant surf waves. This is an event for the entire family with a chance to learn more about water safety in a fun way. MSØ

It’s a time to get extremely wet

Songkran All over Denmark, Fri 13 April, Sat 14 April, Sun 15 April; www. thaiembassy.dk THAILAND: not only known for its beaches and rampant tourism, but also its natural beauty and many feasts and festivals. And of all the feasts and festivals in Thailand – which are many – the Songkran Festival is definitely the most striking. Songkran is celebrated in Thailand as the traditional New Year’s Day. The celebrations include what must be the biggest water fight in the world and it lasts for four days. Thais don’t just throw water at each

Story time Books & Company, Sofievej 1, 2900 Hellerup; Tue mornings 09:30-10:00; free adm; www. booksandcompany.dk Every Tuesday morning, storyteller Sara Albers performs stories, poems, and finger plays. She entertains, inspires and captivates kids’ imaginations, making Tuesday mornings a magical experience for all. SA Creepy Crawly Experimentarium, Tuborg Havnevej 7, Hellerup; ends Sep 2012, open daily 09:30-17:00; under-threes free adm, under-12s 100kr, over-12s 160kr; www.experimentarium.dk Learn more about the creepy crawlies that share your living space. From flies and ants to spiders and maggots, learn the unexpected places where insects live and don’t leave without your Creeponaut certificate. EM Street Art classes Kulturstationen Vanløse, Frode Jakobsens Plads 4, 1., Vanløse; Mondays until 23 April, 15:30-17:30; free adm; contact Renata Bjerre at 2210 0181; ages 13-17 This free graffiti course is an introduction to street art culture and it will teach your teenagers how to sketch, outline and spray. The entire course ends in a street party on 27 April. MSØ

other for no reason - besides getting a kick out of seeing other people soaking wet. The meaning behind the splashes is to symbolically wash off all the misfortunes of the past year, thus welcoming the new year with a fresh new start. Traditionally, Thais would politely pour a bowl of water on members of the family, their close friends and neighbours. As Songkran has taken a more festive note, a bowl becomes a bucket, garden hose and water guns … The Thais are everywhere - think of all the Thai shops and restaurants in the city - so Songkran isn’t just celebrated in Thailand. As of late 2006, there were 111 Thai restaurants in Denmark, with 40 located in Copenhagen alone – which is

incredible for a cuisine that only started planting its roots in Europe 40 years ago (for example the first Thai restaurant in England, The Bangkok in London, only opened its doors for business in 1967), and exploded in popularity in the ‘80s, a growth momentum that has continued into this decade. Most Thai restaurants have special arrangements during the holiday. Restaurant Thai Corner on Istedgade is one of them - they have organised a special day at the Thai temple Watpa in Dragør. The celebrations include traditional dancing and food. Tickets are on sale at various Thai shops in the city. MIKE HOFMAN

BY ELIZABETH DELLAPENNA

SEAFOOD in general can be notoriously difficult to cook well. Just a little bit overdone and we’re getting into rubbery texture territory. Unfortunately, this rule applies to scallop - which are a particularly tasty but expensive food item. At my local fish market, eight scallops cost 127kr. I consider that fairly pricey. Because of the added cost, it was important to find a recipe that’s generally foolproof. That’s where this recipe comes into play. It has been described to me as the easiest and most forgiving recipe for scallops. Also, who can resist the deliciousness that is bacon? It’s important to remember

that since the scallops are to be halved for the recipe, there will be twice as many in the end. For whatever reason, I always get this mixed up and buy too many scallops. Scallops are incredible so I suppose that’s never really a bad thing. The recipe works well as an appetiser, although it could also be served as a main course protein. As an appetiser, I would say that this serves six people (four pieces per person). As a main, I would recommend it for two people (12 per person), although it may be suitable for four. I’m greedy and can’t get enough of scallops or bacon, let alone the two combined. But in the end, it’s up to you.

Restaurant Kiin Kiin Guldbergsgade 21, Cph N; 3535 7535; four-course menu 450kr, seven-course 775kr (with wine menu 1450kr); www.kiin.dk There are only two Thai restaurants in the whole world that have been awarded a Michelin star. One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you’ll find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it’s well deserved. Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through. PDR Reinwald’s Farvergade 15, 1463 Cph K; open Mon-Sat 14:00-24:00 (kitchen closes at 22:00); 3391 8289; five-course menu with wine 850kr, other dishes 75215kr; www.reinwalds.dk Serving lunch and dinner, a director’s-script length of choices confronts you at Reinwald’s. It’s a who’s who of classic French and French-inspired Danish dishes as well as a monthly set menu. Any chef would be proud of this. SC

BioMio Halmtorvet 19, 1700 Cph V; open daily 12:00-24:00 (later Fri and Sat), kitchen open 12:00-22:00; 3331 2000; starters 75kr, mains 135kr; www. biomio.dk Located in an old warehouse next to trendy Kødbyen, Bio Mio is certainly unusual for conservative Copenhagen. It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that you don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that you can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. JH SushiTreat Fox Jarmers Plads 3, Cph V; open Mon-Thu 16:30-22:00, Fri-Sat 16:30-24:00 with Club Treat from 22:00-02:00; 3338 7030 The SushiTreat restaurant at the Hotel Fox serves the best California-style sushi in the city, offers an impressive drinks and wine card, and has a completely unique atmosphere on Friday and Saturday nights when you can order sushi until 2am while listening to some of the city’s best DJs . Marinated Scallops wrapped in Bacon (serves 4)

180 ml maple syrup 60 ml low sodium soy sauce 15 ml Dijon mustard 12 large sea scallops, halved 12 slices smoked bacon, halved 24 toothpicks 25g brown sugar STIR OR WHISK together the maple syrup, soy sauce, and the Dijon mustard in a bowl until smooth. Add the scallops and toss to coat. The original recipe says to cover the bowl with plastic wrap and marinate for at least one hour. However, one typically does not marinate seafood for that long. In my opinion, 20 minutes uncovered is enough. Next, preheat the oven to 190 degrees. Line a rimmed baking sheet with a sheet of aluminium foil.

Arrange bacon pieces on the baking sheet in such a way that they do not overlap. Bake the bacon in the preheated oven for about eight minutes, until some of the grease has rendered out of the bacon; the bacon should still be very soft and pliable. Remove bacon from the baking sheet and pat with paper towels to remove excess grease. Drain or wipe grease from the baking sheet. Wrap each scallop piece with a piece of bacon and secure it with a toothpick. Finding toothpicks might be the most difficult part of this recipe, but they’re necessary. Place the bacon-wrapped scallops onto the drained aluminium foil. Sprinkle the scallops with brown sugar. Finally, bake the scallops in the preheated oven until the scallops are opaque and the bacon is crisp, turning once. It should take somewhere between ten and 15 minutes.

With such a wide choice, it’s a great place to go as a group who can’t agree on a choice of cuisine. On our visit our favourites were the Dim Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. Pubs The Irish Rover Strøget 46, 1161 Cph K; Open daily 10:00-late; www. irishrover.dk You won’t find a more childfriendly pub in the whole city. From the fish and chip expat family nights at 17:00 on the last Friday of every month, to enjoying the Sunday roast (lamb, all the trimmings, just 99kr, kids portion for 58kr), they are always welcome. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day - serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, and upstairs there’s a new lounge area, which is the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. BH Brew Pub Vestergade 29, 1456 Cph K; restaurant open Mon-Sat 12:00-22:00, pub open MonThu 12:00-24:00, Fri-Sat 12:00-02:00, Sun closed; 3332 0060; three-course lunch menu 155kr; www.brewpub. dk The menu is full of hearty, homely, yet inventive dishes featuring inspired use of the same wonderful ingredients that go into the brewing process. AK Kennedy’s Irish Bar Gammel Kongevej 23, 1610 Cph V; Open Mon-Sun 12:0002:00 It’s not an Irish pub. Instead it’s a pub owned by Irishmen, and there’s a big difference. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits. Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH

Southern Cross Løngangstræde 37, Cph K; open Sun-Thu 15:00-03:00, Sat-Sun 12:00-05:00; 3311 0939 This Aussie boozer is a mecca for expats and Danes, old and young, that has a lively darts board, a fortnightly quiz, a good sports-viewing atmosphere, and a happy hour that lasts to 8pm during which you can buy beers for just 30kr. JHW The Dubliner Amagertorv 5, Strøget, 1160 Cph K; Opening Hours: Mon-Sun 10:00-late This pub is never quiet. It’s the perfect place for sports fans to mingle, or for live music which it provides every day. It also serves food all day from 10am to 10pm, and diners can find peace from the music and sport on a table overlooking the walking street, or on the first floor balcony overlooking Amagertorv. BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. BH The Old English Pub Vesterbrogade 2B, 1620 Cph V; Open Sun-Thu 11:30-02:30, Fri-Sat 11:30-04:30; 3332 1921; www.oldenglishpub.dk This Victorian style English pub has all the class and authenticity of a Cotswolds country pub not a Costa del Sol flea trap. Facing Tivoli’s arches and just a stone’s throw from Strøget, it’s the ideal pit-stop on a tour of the city centre. LB

InOut | THE CPH POST ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE

5 - 13 April 2012

IT’S FINALLY Vesterbro’s turn to get some of the acclaimed and affordable food that has made Madklubben famous. Value-for-money is exactly what you get at this newly-opened sixth sibling of a chain of restaurants that includes three other Madklubbens, Frankie’s and Tony’s. They are owned by the chef Anders Aagaard Jensen, who you might know as the jaunty but tough judge on the TV reality cooking show Masterchef. Other than appearing on TV, Aagaard likes to give people a quality food experience where they don’t need to feel inferior by their lack of vocabulary and knowledge of fine dining. This is why Madklubben – in Vesterbro as well as its other locations around the city – offers food you recognise at a price range that includes everybody. The concept is easy to understand. The menu is merely one page long. You simply pick one, two, three or four courses for a price of 100, 150, 200 and 250 kroner respectively. Each course has three to four different options, with the possibility of getting additional salad and potatoes, but be aware that they do charge an extra amount for a few selected dishes. And in keeping with the laid-back approach, you can even opt to have a cheeseburger or what the restaurant staff eat. On the night we visit, the restaurant is obviously busy, especially for a Tuesday, but this doesn’t ruin the cosy mood. We start off with a glass of cava, before our starters - clam chowder and goat’s cheese salad – arrive with a glass of Chablis. The clam chowder is one of their recommended dishes with good reason as it was to die for. Creamy, tasty, amazing. It was one of those meals you wish would never end. The restaurant is situated in the heart of Vesterbro on what appears to be the preferred street to open restaurants this spring (Claus Meyer will join later on in April with his new NamNam) in an old Fona store. On the outside it has kept its spacey façade, but on the inside the records are gone and the place exudes a cosmopolitan and urban, funky style with a big open kitchen where solo-diners can eat at the bar, long tables with room for bigger parties, and a quieter end with small twoperson tables. After a starter like the clam chowder you’re almost afraid that it can only go downhill, but that’s not the case at Madklubben. For the main course we order the beef with onions and the braised pig jaw. The beef does cost a bit extra, but the two meals definitely confirm the value-formoney part, and though there were lefto-

It was a hearty main that left our reviewer struggling to fit in dessert ... yeah, so full, she managed to eat three

vers on the plate after the 350 gram fillet of beef, it wasn’t a sign of dislike, merely a lack of room and our wish to try the desserts. Other than the satisfying food, the service is also very friendly and attentive at all times, and even though the restaurant’s manifesto states that the staff aren’t picked for their knowledge of wine but instead their good mood and infectious laughter, we were able to get some good advice on both the wine and food. The manifesto does make it clear though that this is a restaurant experience where you

play an active part - other than eating the food you also have to pour your own wine and read about the ingredients of the food in the menu. After sitting for a while, we finally felt like dessert, and if you’re two people you might as well take all three desserts for an additional 50kr per person just because you can – as they temptingly write in the menu (the fact that most doctors would diagnose us physically incapable at this point didn’t seem that important). All three desserts were amazing. The first was an almond pie with double cream,

the second a liquorice ice cream with coffee crème and liquorice crispy sprinkles, and the third a lemon mousse with burned meringue and white chocolate. All of them were really good, but the liquorice ice cream with the crispy sprinkles is something I would recommend even to those who claim they despise Danish liquorice. Overall this is a cosy, accommodating and urban chic restaurant that offers quality food at an affordable price and is definitely a place to try out.

Depends if you still like your pie puerile and penile KEVIN EVANCIO

American Pie: Reunion (7)

Dir: Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg; US comedy, 2012, 110 mins; Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Seann William Scott

Premieres April 5 Playing nationwide

HO’S READY for some more pie? Because after American Wedding in 2003 (and a bunch of straight-to-video snoozers for six years after that) we are finally able to indulge in that pie turned into crumble with all the original cast members. They’re back to wrap up the series and send it and its fans away happy. It successfully manages to make the transition from teen comedy to mostly adult comedy, while still holding firm to its roots. The story sees all the old regulars, plus a couple new, come back to Great East Falls for their ten-year reunion which has actually been 13 years but as they say in the film, no one bothered to get around to it until now. Jim (Jason Biggs) and Heather (Alyson Hannigan) now have a two-year-old son and the problems with their sex lives that come with it. Oz (Chris Klein) is dating a model and is a local bigshot with a TV sports programme and on a celebrity dance TV show, Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas) is married and a stay-at-home architect, while Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) says that he has been away on magical adventures around the globe. Stifler (Seann William Scott) is working as a temp and Jim’s Dad (Eugene Levy) has had to deal with the death of his wife. After the initial set up, the story really hits its pie-stride when Stifler stumbles into the boys at the local pub and

They might be ten years older, but the beach still holds the same appeal suggests that they tear into the weekend like they used to do as a tribute to the old times. This of course invariably leads the boys through many booze-filled escapades where (as in previous films): A. Jim finds himself in an embarrassing situation(s) B. Stifler has gross-out experiences as both the doer and the do-ee C. Oz still has feelings for Heather (Mena Suvari) D. Someone ends up with Sti-

fler’s Mom (Jennifer Coolidge) American Pie: Reunion is not the laugh-out-loud gross-out humour machine that was the first three in the series. The characters have grown up and so has the humour to some extent. Rather than simply trying to get laid, they are trying to work on/build relationships – from Jim and Heather trying to be a husband and wife while still being a mommy and daddy, to Jim’s Dad trying to get back into the dating

not the rousing, gut busting, I can’t breathe moments that the others had. There are plenty of inside jokes related to previous films and the characters/actors, and a super cool uncredited cameo near the end of the film that will have Stifler fans cheering for him. This last serving of pie may not be the best, but it certainly is tasty in its own right and a worthy clincher to a fantastic (in a manner of speaking) series of films.

scene after a deceased spouse, to Finch trying to move on from Stifler’s mum to Oz questioning what he really wants in life. These sorts of things don’t lend themselves as well to the old gross-out gags as before. Thankfully, we still have the old Steve Stifler who still supplies us with the best moments and lines of the film. American Pie: Reunion is probably the least funny of the four main films, but still has plenty of laughs, just maybe

INEMATEKET IN the heart of Copenhagen offers a rich programme of more than 60 films every month, many of which are in English or with English subtitles. In April, the cinema is showing Japanese cult classics,

Alfred Hitchcock, Lynne Ramsay and, of course, the film festival CPH:PIX. From 12 April, CPH:PIX takes over the city with films, concerts and readings from all over the world. More than 150 films over 18 days should provide plenty of opportunity to catch all the movies you want to see. The festival management intends to make CPH:PIX an event for the regular enthusiasts with high quality films from around the world, while simultaneously orchestrating a festival that competes with the major European film festivals. This means a standard dose of red carpets, glitterati and VIP

parties is inevitable. A focus on new talents and avant-garde as well as cross collaborations between art forms and institutions should make this balancing act possible. One of these new talents is Belgian film director Michaël R Roskam. Roskam attended St Lucas Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he studied painting and contemporary art, and the Binger Film Institute in Amsterdam where he graduated in 2005 with a master’s degree in script writing and development. After several jobs as a journalist for Flemish newspaper De Morgen and a copywriter, he wrote a script for a short film entitled Haun in 2002.

Roskam made his feature film debut with Bullhead, which was released in 2011. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film – the film is made in Limburgish, a language (or dialect, according to some) spoken in the Dutch/ Belgian border area. He was named by Variety as one of the ‘10 directors to watch’ and received the Magritte Award for Best Screenplay and the André Cavens Award. Bullhead is playing the first three days of the film festival. Tickets are on sale for 80kr and can be bought online. MIKE HOFMAN

5 - 13 April 2012

New this Week The Guard Dir: John Michael McDonagh, Ire dramady, 2011, 96 mins; Brendan Gleeson, Don Cheadle, Mark Strong Sergeant Gerry Boyle is a small-town Irish cop with a confrontational personality, a subversive sense of humour, a dying mother, a fondness for prostitutes, and absolutely no interest whatsoever in the international cocaine-smuggling ring that has brought straight-laced FBI agent Wendell Everett to his door. The Guard offers an offbeat take on a genre without skimping on the violence or gunplay. MH

Book Your Tickets Hugo (15) Dir: Martin Scorsese; US drama, 2011, 128 mins; Asa Butterfield, Chloë Moretz, Ben Kingsley, Jude Law A wondrous blend of fantasy and mystery that will appeal to adults as well as children. MH

The Ides of March (3) Dir: George Clooney; US drama, 2011, 101 mins; Geore Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti Initially, the film seems too sleek. But then the film takes a few unexpected turns, which creates intriguing conflicts. LD

Shame (15) Dir: Steve McQueen; UK drama, 2011, 101 mins; Michael, Carey Mulligan, Nicole Beharie Shame is a claustrophobic drama of intensity and urgency. It will make any recent films seem trivial and tame, a strange and unique beast indeed. It’s mature drama, bravely tackling complicated subject matter for those looking to experience something different. It’s original, visceral and disquieting - in the way only cinema can be. MW

Avoid like the Plague This Means War (11) Dir: McG; US com, 2012, 98 mins; Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, Til Schweiger The script is mediocre, and the settings are off. The only pleasure comes from watching Bronson and Captain Kirk fighting over Legally Blonde. MH

Project X (15) Dir: Nima Nourizadeh; US comedy, 2012, 88 mins; Thomas Mann, Oliver Cooper, Jonathan Daniel Brown At 88 minutes, the film manages to outstay its welcome, playing like an overlong episode of The Inbetweeners with 100 times the budget and none of the charm. It’s big, loud and pointless. It’s probably going to be massive. MW

Also Playing The Hunger Games (11) Dir: Gary Ross; US sci-fi, 2012, 142 mins; Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson Ross has successfully dissected and expanded the book and produced something that works as a film - so long as you’re not too precious about its origins. MH

Wrath of the Titans (11) Dir: Jonathan Liebesman; US action, 2012, 126 mins; Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Rosamund Pike Wrath seems to have all the neccessary elements you would expect for a top-drawer: plenty of action and production design, just a hint of romance to round the characters without taking away from the action, good bits of humour spread throughout the, and just enough of an interesting story to help tie everything together. Unfortunately, instead of a mythological proportians, it is legandary only because it fizzles like an old soda. KE

The Descendants (7) Dir: Alexander Payne; US dramedy, 2011, 115 mins; Geore Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller Despite the nominations, Clooney delivers a performance we’ve seen many times before. LD

The Iron Lady (3) Dir: Phyllida Lloyed; UK/ Fra drama, 2012, 105 mins; Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent, Olivia Colman, Richard E Grant From the first frame there’s a growing awareness that our perceptions of this woman are being gently and skilfully manipulated by director Phyllida Lloyd and screenwriter Abi Morgan, so much so that regardless of your political persuasion you’d have to be resolutely stubborn or emotionally retarded in failing to be moved by this biopic. Nevertheless, Margaret Thatcher is full blooded; she lives and breathes before your eyes. MW

The Artist (3) Dir: Michel Hazanavicius; Fra/Bel dramedy, 2011, 100 mins; Jean Dujardin, Bernice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell It’s difficult to see why this film is being championed so highly. Many will defend it by claiming that detractors are put off by a lack of colour, dialogue, explosions and other contemporary mainstays. But really their efforts would be better spent lauding Chaplin’s Modern Times or Murnau’s Sunrise. MW

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (3) Dir: John Madden; UK dramady, 2012, 124 mins; Judy Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson A dissapointingly familiar form with surprisingly charming content. Take your mum. MW

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (11)

My Week With Marilyn (3)

Dir: Tomas Alfredson; UK/ Fra/Ger thriller, 2011, 127 mins; Gary Oldman, John Hurt, Ciaran Hinds, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Kathy Burke, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy Atmospheric and stylish yes, but this has to be the most un-thrilling thriller of recent memory. MW

Dir: Simon Curtis; US drama, 2011, 99 mins; Michelle Williams, Eddie Redmayne, Kenneth Branagh It is rather difficult to portray an actress whose image is still so ‘alive’. Williams captures the innocence, flirtation and insecurity of Monroe very well, delivering a complex performance. However, Williams never seems to fully exude the sexuality of Monroe. That was the message of this film, that Monroe was different in real life than her worldwide image. Nevertheless, Williams lacks the natural sexuality that Monroe always projeced. ED

John Carter (11) Dir: Andrew Stanton; US sci-fi, 2012, 132 mins; Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong John Carter is enjoyable, but not memorable. Somehow it feels that Disney should stick to what Disney does best - animations - and leave live-action films to others. But if you don’t mind formulaic plot devices and only crave a bit of light-hearted entertainment, it’s a pleasant enough way to spend two hours. DC

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (11) Dir: Stephen Daldry; US drama, 2011, 129 mins; Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Thomas Horn If you’re a moviegoer who enjoys having your heartstring plucked like a bluegrass banjo, this is the king of movie you will be gushing over this while drinking double mocha non-fat cappuccinos with your friends. KE

Safe House (15) Dir: Daniel Espinosa; US action, 2012, 117 mins; Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds If you’re a fan of good, dynamic directing, Washington’s darker, more menacing characters, and Reynold’s bruised face, you will like Safe House. DC

Contraband (15) Dir: John Madden; UK dramady, 2012, 124 mins; Judy Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson We are supossed to be dazzled by the cleverness of the idea, as each accomplishment is revealed along with the realisation of what must have taken place. Still, overal it’s an entertaining experience. LD

TV2 Zulu, Sun 11:15

TV2 ZULU understands its audience. Under 30, zero patience, the idea of waiting a week for an episode fills them with horror. Give them what they want, or they’ll download it somewhere else. This is why for about a year now Zulu has every Sunday been showing an entire series, morning to evening – and often they’re Scandinavian premieres. Terriers, recommended with a healthy 75 on Metacritic, is one such show. From the creator of The Shield, it’s an equally dark, but wittier tale of two unlicensed San Diego PIs who break more laws than the criminals they pursue. It’s “easy-rolling yet prickly,” purred Entertainment Weekly; “effortlessly smart, easy to like and exciting to follow”, agreed the Washington Post; and “likeable and familiar” chimed Time.

Three other dramas worth checking out are Kidnapped (DR1, Wed 22:00, 13 parts, 68 on Metacritic) that sounds uncannily like Mel Gibson film Ransom and that felt overlong at two hours; the heavy-duty British miniseries The Promise (DR2, Sat-Mon 17:00) in which a young British woman tries to make sense of her dying grandfather’s involvement in the early days of Israel; and Place of Execution (DR1, Thu 22:45), an intriguing British miniseries about the mystery of a girl’s disappearance 45 years ago. Docs-wise, these four’s titles speak for themselves: The World’s Worst Place to be Gay (DR2, Wed 23:00) is, of course, Uganda; Curious and Unusual Deaths (DR HD, Fri 20:50 & Thu 20:00) looks like fun; Religulous (DR2,

Sat 20:50) is an acclaimed work by satirist Bill Mather; and the sevenparter The Model Agency (London’s Premier Model Management) is according to the Guardian a “fascinating” expose of the industry about a “gaggle of idiots” who “talk a lot of shite” and “don’t just hang themselves, they chop their own heads off TV2 Zulu, Sun 11:15 Terriers and stick them on the railings” Elsewhere, there’s a Burlesque theme night on DRK on Monday from 20:00; another chance to see the miniseries Hitler: The Rise of Evil (TV3 Puls, Mon 22:00) and the first ever episode of Dexter (TV3 Puls, Thu 22:00); and recently made music docs about Queen (SV2, Sat 00:00), Britney Spears (SV2, Sun 22:50), and Whitney Houston (SV1, Sun 21:30).
