TWO PERFORMANCE pieces playing in Copenhagen this week are set down the pub: Shakespeare Unplugged, which we previewed two issues ago, and Hjertebanken, which is previewed on G3.

Not sure what to make of this.

While it certainly solves the legroom issue, and will make fidgeting less conspicuous, it sounds like it will need a list of stipulations on the ticket. Like could all those with weak bladders kindly sit near the exit – which when you’re drinking pints is invariably everybody. And no, you’re not allowed to get your iPhone out if you get bored – the actors will find this distracting. As they will peanut throwing, chatting up the bar-person, copulation and fighting, and spending ten minutes positioning a folded beer-mat under the table to make it level. And don’t forget crisps.

You’d need a whole paragraph on that alone.

At Hjertebanken, teens will be served drinks and aphrodisiacs at the bar. Yes, you read that right

… only teens. They’re the last people who need help. A woman could pass at 400 hundred paces and that’s all they need for an entire week. And, while we’re at it, maybe somebody should tell them to stop using the translated title, ‘Heartbeat’, when speaking to non-Danish press. Although the damage has already been done, can we assure you now that at no point will somebody start playing the Hollies. Although the British TV drama of the same name is bizarrely popular here, and there hasn’t been a weekday since the 1990s when it hasn’t been shown.

In contrast, Ben Clement, a former assistant editor of this very publication, has been a relative stranger to these shores since scarpering off to Berlin three years ago. In the meantime, his career in artistic architecture has gone from strength to strength, particularly after winning the prestigious ‘Politikens Talentpris’ in 2008. Which kind of sounds a bit biased doesn’t it? Well, he and his partner’s current exhibition Phantom Limbs (see G2 for details), like all of their work, speaks for itself. It’s unique, inspiring and amazingly visual – it’s no surprise to learn their work has started appearing in film as well.

Although, and this might change, they haven’t yet started making anything for the pub.

AN ONGOING exhibition at Designmuseum Danmark, Phantom Limbs, explores themes of duality and artifice, goes behind the scenes, using the artefacts of the museum to shape the content of the artwork. Its creators, the collaborative art duo Benandsebastian, say the exhibition is about mining the museum, and in some cases, “undermining”. The artists worked with the collections in three different Copenhagen museums: the Medical Museum, the National Museum, and Designmuseum Danmark, seeking out obscure pieces and materials to create their art, which is part curated exhibition and part sculptural installation.

The exhibition’s title, Phantom Limbs, refers to the peculiar condition of being able to feel a limb - an arm or leg - that is no longer there due to amputation. The limb feels present, but is really absent. Presence and absence is a duality that is significant to the work of benandsebastian. The artist pair often work with dualities in their elaborate constructions: mobile vs immobile, inside vs outside, fake vs authentic, and so on. In this exhibition, duality is present in the pairing of sculptural work by benandsebastian with specifically selected pieces from the museum collections.

Benandsebastian chose relics in reliquaries from the National Museum, selected prosthetics and placebos at the Medical Museum, and convinced the Design Museum to allow them free movement in the museum’s attic where they were thrilled to come upon some intricate and futuristic ivory towers made by Swiss artisan Lorenz Spengler in the 18th century. Each of these finds were then paired with an existing benandsebastian piece, or in some cases, a new piece was made inspired by the museum artefact.

For example, Spengler’s ivory towers were paired with benandsebastian’s piece City of the (Re)Oriented (2007), a tangled city designed from wood and plaster that folds in on itself in a meaningless maze of mobility and immobility. The pair’s creative curatorial strategy produces an exhibition that confounds the viewer’s concept of what is real and not real, what is of the museum, and what the artists have made.

The artists use the expected to create unexpected experiences. If you have ever visited a museum, you have probably seen an historical object inside a glass case, also called a vitrine. The vitrine is the expected, a typical part of the museum environment, preserving precious objects from the elements. Shakespeare Unplugged

Penned by the actors and director Barry McKenna, it takes place in a pub during a football match between England and Denmark.

Confronted by a power cut, two fans (Ian Burns and Andre Jeffers) switch their attention to the lovelife of the barman (Adam Brix), teaching him how to woo his Rosalind in Shakespearean style, with a little help from the audience, which according to McKenna, is “a crucial element” in any Shakespeare play. They say of their collaboration: “Working together is sometimes a bit of a nightmare, but for the most part we see the companionship, sharing, and opportunity to fire ideas off each other as a great gift.”

An abandoned and betrayed human is going on a journey towards death in an open winter landscape. This is the story behind Elfenbenstaarnet’s production of Franz Schubert’s classic Winterreise. Using electronic sound pictures, puppeteers and exquisite paper cuttings (by visual artist Peter Callesen), it is performed by mezzosoprano Trine Bastrup Møller, pianist Julie Andkjær Olsen, and the puppeteer Henriette Aarup. Entitled ‘Heartbeat’ in English, this dance event looks at the experience of being young and in love with all the senses, going beyond intangible feelings into the realms of taste and smell. Teens are invited to have a drink with an aphrodisiac during the performance while seated at a makeshift bar on the stage.

“I want to create a dance performance that speaks directly to the teen’s own universe,” explains Rázga, herself a dancer and educator. “Where they are right now is the beginning of their adult lives, with feelings about love’s universe and all that comes with it - the thrill of bloody knees, raging jealousy, and happiness that can travel right up to the roots of the hair.

This is the second incarnation of Heartbeat. The initial phase took place inside Thorvaldsen’s Museum, where teenagers talked, ate and interacted with the performers and created the final piece among some statues of Eros and Aphrodite.

The observations about love that came out of this experiment were then culled into this performance. In January the choreographer also worked with five classes of teenagers to learn about how love works for them and their codes of body language. These stories and movements have been incorporated into the choreography.

Rázga has been working as a choreographer since 2002, and she is known for her sense of play inside dance and using styles ranging from capoeira to MTV. She enjoys looking at common issues of modern life with a sense of humour and taking them as inspiration for expression in movement. Past subjects have included World Cup football and Middle Eastern politics.

With this piece, Rázga is interested in dissolving the performance/audience boundaries, and invites the audience members in their teens to join the performers on stage without any obligations to join in. The

Only 35 audience members can attend each intimate

performance, set up in a small space to emphasise the feeling of romantic relationships and close connections. The dancers meet each other at the bar set up on stage and create duets, trios and other drama-filled group dynamics in dance.

“The feelings and language of love are the same as they have always been, and yet there are both small and large steps from generation to generation,” says Rázga.

Say hello to Britain’s newest sensation Ed Sheeran

I

f someone can make an audience move, it’s this guy: the young British-Irish singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, who recently won two Brit Awards for Best British Breakthrough and Best British Male.

Though he also has a few slow songs in his repertoire, anyone who has seen him live would know this is an act not to miss. His unusual mix of folk, acoustic, hip-hop and grime makes him a very distinctive artist with his own original sound.

At the age of 20, Sheeran is one

of the most popular names in the UK. The singles ‘The A Team’, ‘You Need Me, I Don’t Need You’, and ‘Lego House’ have all been in the top five of the British singles chart. ‘The A Team’ was the highest selling single in the UK in 2011.

Sheeran hails from Suffolk, where he began playing the guitar at a very young age. In 2005, he made his first recording but his career didn’t really start to set off until he moved to London in 2008 and started playing gigs while sofa-surfing at friends’ places. In 2009, he played 312 gigs in an attempt to beat James Morrison who had been quoted as saying he did 200 gigs in a year.

Other than his incredible drive and unique music, what makes Sheeran stand out from the crowd is his author-

ity about his music. This is a musician who knows exactly what he wants and he won’t settle for anything less. For instance, when he was told by his former management company to conform both his looks and music if he wanted to be successful, he replied by making the song ‘You Need Me, I Don’t Need You’.

A line from the song is: “They say I’m up and coming like I’m f**king in an elevator”, which also describes Sheeran’s very laid-back attitude to the fuss around him.

After splitting ways with the management company, he spent the next couple of years making some independent collaborative EPs, each of them different from the other. Sheeran promoted his work through social media and a relentless touring schedule.

But his success might also have something to do with a few chance encounters. The first was when he met the prostitute who inspired him to make the single ‘The A Team’, but he also had a chance encounter with the American actor Jamie Foxx who let Sheeran use his private recording studio in LA. He finally caught the attention of the mainstream media in January 2011 with the release No. 5 Collaborations Project, which included collaborations with some of the British grime scene’s most respected names like Wileys, JME and Ghetts. The EP sold more than 7,000 copies in its first week, on sale all without the help of a record label.

Later the same year he performed live on the British talk show Later... with Jools Holland with ‘The A Team’,

which became his commercial breakthrough when the song went directly to number three on the UK chart.

But Sheeran is not only popular in his home country. The tickets for his first performance in Denmark quickly sold out the small Lille Vega venue, so it was moved to the bigger stage in Store Vega. At Vega, he will be supported by another British singer-songwriter, Mike Rosenberg, who performs under the name of Passenger, along with Nina Nesbitt, who has among other things done a cover version of ‘The A Team’.

A bulky package of heavy drum rolls, Gustav Wood’s Bon Jovi-inspired vocals and meaty guitar riffs led to the group becoming an instant favourite of rock fans in both Europe and the US. A volatile mix of emo-rock and classic rock have led to comparisons with the likes of Funeral For a Friend, a comparison that has propelled their ever-growing popularity. This is probably going to result in a sell-out concert so be sure to book up in advance.

turned up at a semi-filled Lille Vega on Wednesday night not really knowing what to expect from singer-songwriter Kina Grannis’s concert. Two hours later, I – just like the rest of the crowd – left with a smile on my face and searing rays of optimism in my heart.

Grannis’s show was preceded by a cheery, imaginative and emotionally-charged warm-up performance from acoustic folk pop guitarist and singer Imaginary Friend, who played several well-crafted opening tunes - interwoven with a series of jokes and impromptu humour that did their bit to lighten the mood.

Californian-born Kina Grannis, accompanied by her cello player, stepped onto the smoky scene and opened with the adequately placed ‘World In Front of Me’ – featured on her highly revered 2011 album Stairwells. Several songs in and

Imam Baildi

Global; 21:00; 80kr Named after the palatable Mediterranean dish of the same name, the eight-strong Greek orchestra combine a smorgasbord of musical ingredients to create a nostalgic, patently Mediterranean and lively sound. Releasing a new record last year wittily entitled The Imam Baildi Cookbook (2011), the budding group have again impressed both the music media and fellow artists, leading to support gigs for major acts such as Massive Attack, Ojos de Brujo and Gogol Bordello.

They’ve performed over 200 concerts across Europe – including a charismatic appearance at Roskilde Festival two years back.

Youth Lagoon

Lille Vega; 21:00; 125kr Hailing from Boise, Idaho, 22-year-old Trevor Powers (aka Youth Lagoon) was instantly recognised by record execs following his single release ‘July’ as a free download late last summer.

Months later, Powers was rushed into the studio to pen down his material, resulting in mellowing electronic-folk songs that swell with ambient instrumentation and heart-felt lyrics. Touring for the first time and presenting the world his debut record, The Year of Hibernation (2011) it’s exciting times for the young gun, and it’s a gig worth seeing.

Active Child

Lille Vega; 21:00; 125kr Making use of harps, falsettovocals and measures of heavy basslines, Pat Grossi has a mellow yet heavy-bodied sound.

Performing under the name Active Child, Grossi has intently carved a sub-genre that exists on a plateau of its own. His debut record You Are All I See (2011), which included the alluring single release by the same name, was on the receiving end of some much deserved hype by the industry, praised for its collision of soft-textured beats and danceable bass-lines.

Damien Jurado & Full Band

Active since the mid90s, he’s gained the tag as being an urban folk artist – a description drawn from his combination of finely sketched lyrics and climatic instrumentation that contrasts with the more pastoral brand of folk music patented by the likes of Fleet Foxes. Evidently inspired by icons of folk such as Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Nick Drake, his lyrics are spun from the heart – a trait of his emotional songwriting that has led to his rising popularity.

In short, Jurado’s concert is one of the highlights this week.

Nightlife The Golden Ladies Club

From DJs and guitarists to front-women, the all-star lady-line-up includes Dóra Dúna (The Log Lady), Augusta Glahn Abrahamsen (P3), Najaaraq (Ung Flugt), Nina Castenskiold (The Immigrants) and plenty of other faces you may recognise from Bakken, Vega and Culture Box. The Drums

Amager Bio; 20:00; 225kr Hailing from Brooklyn, The Drums are responsible for making possibly one of the best summer tunes of the decade, ‘Let’s Go Surfing’, ablaze with simplistic beach-guitar riffs, a contagious melody and the catchy whistle at the heart of the song’s chorus. Stitching together an upbeat mixture of influences from The Beach Boys to The Smiths, it’s no surprise that they’ve been so popular. With a batch of new numbers on their set-list from their new record Portamento (2011), this is exactly what you want to be listening to with the summer inching closer each day.

Making a mean disco-pop cocktail, Tensnake combines the staple ingredients of early ‘80s Italo-disco pop and the vibrating foundations of house music. This week is the monthly label night of Sound of Berghain, which showcases some of the finest techno on the continent.

Tonight’s set will be delivered by two of Berlin’s most charismatic DJs. A combination of Höppner’s melodic mixes and Boris’s energetic sets will leave the dancefloor in tatters.

The Royal Castles of Copenhagen Nothing illustrates the ‘regenerating’ forces of Copenhagen like Christiansborg Palace (Christiansborg Slotsplads, 1218 Cph K, open Thu-Sun 10:00-17:00), which is located on the small island of Slotsholmen in Copenhagen Harbour. It has more than 800 years of history as the power base of the kingdom, though it is but the last in a series of successive castles and palaces constructed on the same site since the erection of the first in 1167! The first castle was built by Absalon, Copenhagen’s first bishop and the city’s official founder, though the castle was demolished stone by stone in 1368 by the enemies of Valdemar IV. The following year an entirely new castle was built on the very same foundation and dubbed Copenhagen Castle. This castle succeeded in being rebuilt several times in the years between 1369 and 1720, before Frederik IV decided to rebuild it entirely, though the new and heavily decorated castle proved to be too heavy – the walls began giving way and cracking. Frederik’s son, Christian IV issued an order to demolish the overextended and antiquated castle and erect a new one in its place – called Christiansborg. It was – like most of the works of Christian IV – a sight for the gods, but unfortunately the castle met an untimely end in a fire in 1794. The construction of a second Christiansborg was finished in 1828 – but it burned down once again in 1884. Third time’s a charm, as the say-

Founded in 1999, Trio con Brio consists of three central figures of the Danish music scene: pianist Jens Elvekjær, who is also in demand as a soloist, violinist SooJin Hong and cellist Soo-Kyung Hong - both first concertmasters of the National Symphony Orchestra. The trio has an interesting dynamic, both on and off stage: the Hongs are sisters and Elvekjær is married to Soo-Kyung. CS

Today, most of the premises at the palace are at the disposal of the Danish Parliament, though parts of the palace are open to visitors: visit the Royal Reception Rooms, Christiansborg Palace Chapel, the Royal Theatre and most of the Riding Ground Complex. Walk where kings have walked and reach out and touch the historic past with your very hands.

The citizens’ harbour The Danish translation of Copenhagen is København, which stems from the ancient Danish name for the city, Køpmannæhafn, which literally means ‘the merchants’ harbour’. It does tell of the importance of the presence of merchants in Copenhagen. The citizens controlled the economy of the city in the past and they still do. It was hard-working, everyday citizens who got the city up and running in a manner of speaking, and it is their history you can experience at the Worker’s Museum (Rømersgade 22, 1362 Cph K; open daily 10:00-16:00).

To experience the other – and infinitely more privileged – end of the citizen’s scale, visit the Victorian Home (Frederiksholms Kanal, 1471 Cph K, guided tours Sat & Sun, 11:00, 12:00 & 13:00), a luxury flat of original interiors, which are remarkably well-preserved, from the upholstered furniture, elaborate drapes and ornaments, to the original bathroom and toilet.

For other historic stop-offs on your pilgrimage, you might want to visit Museum Amager, where you can travel back in time and experience this part of Copenhagen before the single-family houses took over the land, or the Police Museum for an insight into the everlasting struggle of good and evil between the city’s criminals and the forces of justice.

WHEN THE flowers bloom and the weather gets to a steady temperature above minus, for most people it means that spring is coming, but for a certain group of people this means the start of the season. This group of people includes clowns, acrobats and contortionists, and the thing they have in common is the circus. Circus time is just around the corner and at Circus Arena this season is going to be even better than before with new acts and several awards in the bag.

Today the show consists of everything from acrobats on African elephants, to jugglers and a hot air balloon, but it wasn’t always like this. Back in the old days, the Circus Arena’s grand old man and founder, Arne Berdino Olsen, performed as a magician together with the strong man Abdullah and the clown Larno as the only acts in the show. Later on they got ponies, and Arne’s children started to perform as well: his daughter Jytte performed in the trapeze and as a line dancer, and his son Benny juggled.

Despite the massive success of the circus that continues today, it was never on the cards for Arne Berdino Olsen to make his living in this kind of arena. He didn’t

come from an artistic family and actually started out in life working with leather, but then in 1930 he took off with a small Danish circus, Alaska, where he worked and performed for 25 years with his wife Lydia before starting his own in 1955 together with the strong man Abdullah.

The circus remains a family business.

Benny Berdino Olsen taking over in 1976 when his dad died, and in 2010 his son and son’s wife, Jackie and Laura BerdinoOlsen, took over. The family has always played essential parts in the programme, but moreover Benny Berdino has always managed to get international performers to be part of the programme. The international guests this year include the Catana Troupe, the Spanish energy bomb Picasso Jr, the Chinese acrobats Puyang Acrobats and George the juggler from the Czech Republic.

Benny Berdino wanted to be the best Danish circus, and in spite of a few financial difficulties and being personally financially ruined in 1987, he has managed to

make it the biggest Danish circus.

They are indeed among the best, and confidence levels are especially high this year, as Circus Arena has just returned from the prestigious Monte Carlo International Circus Festival with two of the biggest prizes: the Golden Clown and the Audience Award, which it won thanks to the elephant and horse routine performed by the Caselly and Berdino families. Involving four African elephants, four thoroughbred horses, it is performed by eight girls from the two families, and 15-yearold prodigy René Jr, who dazzles the audience with his triple somersault leaps from elephant to elephant.

Other acts worth looking out for include the extremely talented rider Patrick Berdino, clowns Jimmy Folco, and Toto Chabri, and the hot air balloon act, which the circus is reluctant to reveal any information about, so expect a really big surprise.

BEING AWAY from home can really make you miss certain things, especially your special comfort foods. For me nothing says comfort more than a lovely roast chicken, Australian-style.

Whilst a lot of my Danish friends were shocked to find out that we are fans of roasts down under with our hot weather and all, Australians actually love a good homemade roast chook.

Whole chickens can actually be quite an affordable option here, with the major chains such as Netto often having them available on special for anywhere between 30 and 50 kroner.

Luckily, having recently set out to wow my Danish friends whilst sticking to a tight budget, I managed to pick one up in Aldi for only 28 kroner.

When you compare the price of buying chicken cuts compared to a whole, it actually makes more sense to cook a whole one and enjoy the leftovers.

The perfect Australian roast chicken requires three parts: a well cooked chicken, a lovely juicy stuffing and melt in your mouth gravy.

All in all, the preparation included, a roast chicken can be ready in a little over two hours.

Place the chicken in the oven and immediately turn the heat down to 200°C/400°F/ gas 6 and cook the chicken for 1 hour and 20 minutes. Tip: If the skin starts to look like its burning lay a piece of aluminium foil over the top to protect it.

Once your chicken has finished cooking, take two spoonfuls of the drippings, combine with flour, butter, salt and pepper and half a cup of chicken stock in a saucepan. Slowly heat together making sure to stir frequently.

There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. From the fish and chip expat family nights at 17:00 on the last Friday of every month, to enjoying the Sunday roast (lamb, all the trimmings, just 99kr, kids portion for 58kr), they are always welcome. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day - serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, and upstairs there’s a new lounge area, which is the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits.

Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH

It’s the perfect place for sports fans to mingle, or for live music which it provides every day. BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. The croque monsieur is also a tasty dish, although it does take creative licence and varies somewhat from traditional recipes. Oven-grilled, made with Serrano ham, Gruyère cheese and Dijon mustard, topped with paprika and nutmeg, and served with pickles and baked cherry tomatoes, this dish is ideal for those looking for the more adult version of a toasted cheese sandwich.

MY INTEREST in Cafe Bang & Jensen was first sparked shortly after moving to this country. Every time I would cycle down Istedgade, I would see scores of people sitting outside and even more packed inside. That being said, it’s not until you actually go indoors that you realise the secret of its appeal.

Sure, from the outside, it’s a pretty looking café, but once you enter the doors of this once pharmacy you soon realise what keeps people coming back.

The inside is a mix of so many influences that it’s hard to nail down exactly what theme they were going for. The large first room houses the bar and kitchen and leads through to a back room reminiscent of someone’s living room from decades past.

There are old tatty but comfy cinema-style sofas, hideous print wallpaper and warm inviting round tables that almost scream at you to sit down and have a drink.

Every great sitcom has that cool place where people hang out - think Central Perk in Friends or the Peach Pit in Beverley Hills 90210. Bang and Jensen is that place in Copenhagen.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Bang & Jensen specialises in generous-sized, good food for a decent price. Theirmenu is all encompassing, making it the perfect place to go with a group of people, no matter how fussy they may be.

The menu is flavoursome, with a mix of homemade meals such as sandwiches, salads, pastas and classics like chilli con carne.

With many options to choose from, it’s hard to pick a favourite dish. However, praise does have to be given to the nachos.

Having tried many a nachos in various places throughout the city, Bang and Jensen’s is undeniably the best tasting and best value for money. Available with or without chicken, the nachos comes with cheddar, sour cream, salsa and olives or jalapeños. Unlike so many other places, these nachos actually resemble nachos and have a sufficient amount of cheese to send cheese lovers into a frenzy. Neither the cheese nor chicken are overcooked, and it is easily large enough to share with a friend if you’re not feeling overly hungry.

The chilli con carne is easily one of the most popular dishes, and whenever I’ve been in, there has always been an absurd amount of people eating it. Available only during dinner service, it is a good size and at 89 kroner it is a steal for what you get.

Containing minced beef, peppers, two kinds of chilli, Porter and chocolate, it is served with sour cream, rice, bread and butter. It really is the ideal comfort food. The flavours are genuine, and it is spicy enough

ground beef filling combined with peppers, corn and chilli is succulent and tantalisingly delicious. The cheddar that holds the burrito together is tasty, and you can’t help but feel completely nourished and perhaps even a bit naughty after eating it. The sour cream topping is light and fresh, whilst the homemade salsa served with corn chips and the side salad really makes this into a complete meal. Well worth the 89 kroner, the Burrito will keep you coming back for more.

Apart from lunch and dinner, Bang and Jensen’s breakfast is also quite good and affordable at 90 kroner. To order, you simply

fill out a form of what you want, and like a slightly more personalised buffet it will be served the way you want. Coffee and tea are also available all day and night, and while the coffee verges on the pricier side, it is yummy and far from bitter.

Bang and Jensen doesn’t take reservations, but with a relatively high turnover the wait for a table isn’t usually too long.

Just remember the kitchen closes at 8pm on Saturday nights to make way for cocktails another good reason to go!

E

xtremely Loud and Incredibly Close is very intentional in trying to involve your emotions. If you are a moviegoer who enjoys having your heartstring plucked like a bluegrass banjo, this is the kind of movie you will be gushing over this while drinking double mocha non-fat cappuccinos with your friends.

Stephen Daldry is no stranger to directing movies of young men who lose someone important to them (Billy Elliot, The Reader) while the world around them changes dramatically. In this case, Oskar (Horn) loses his father to the terrorist bombings of 9/11. The story basically begins one year later.

Before continuing, it’s important to know a little about Asperger’s syndrome (a kind of autism) before you go and see this movie. The disorder manifests itself among others as difficulties in social interaction and obsession-compulsion. The main character of Oskar may or may not have Aspergers, but definitely has a mild form of autism, which is shown throughout the movie. For example, Oskar’s father constantly devises tasks and quests to give him something to do and force him to talk to other people. This is why he can come across as rather annoying on screen - and therefore a brilliant representation by the young Thomas

For a terrifying moment, it looked like this film was going to be the sequel of Forrest Gump Horn. In this light, he’s no longer just an obnoxious movie kid, but someone whose obnoxiousness and desperation - his very disorder - are crying out for order.

As mentioned, it is one year after the attacks when Oskar finally goes into his father’s closet (that his grieving mother still has not cleaned out) and discovers a key in an envelope that simply says Black on it. Oskar makes a list of all 472 New York residents with the surname Black and visits them one by one, in the hope that this will eventually lead him to

the corresponding lock. His mission to find the lock for that key becomes both a way to connect to his father and to soothe his obsession-compulsion.

He is joined on his quest by a man simply known as the Renter (von Sydow), an older gentleman that boards with his grandmother (Zoe Caldwell) while his mother (Bullock) remains worlds apart from Oskar seemingly unable to connect with him. And while Oskar carries with him the burden of many secrets, as it happens, so does everyone else

around him, including his mother, grandmother and the Renter. As each character reveals these secrets, it is like they have found the keys to their own locks, allowing them to move closer to each other and society.

While the adults are good, von Sydow garnered an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of the nonspeaking Renter. It’s the more than capable Horn that takes centre-stage.

His character is a difficult one to play. He is not overly likeable, in fact can be downright annoying, but he simply does not know any other

way to be. However, no matter how grating his character can be, you can’t helpbeing swept along with his incessant narration and roaming adventures.

It’s important to note that the film is not really about 9/11 - it’s about the aftermath of those left and how they deal with the loss of someone because of it. If nothing else, Daldry has undoubtedly delivered an exciting prospect in Thomas Horn and given Max von Sydow at least one more poignant role to add to his stunning collection.

s usual, Cinemateket is showing a diverse mix of films that gives you a great alternative to the Hollywood run-of-the-mill dross on offer at the bigger movie theatres.

One of the themes this coming month is the early films (1923-38) of British film director and producer Alfred Hitch-

cock. Besides being raised as a strict Catholic and attending a school run by Jesuits, Hitch had very a pretty regular upbringing.

In 1920, he managed to secure a job as a title designer. In 1923, he got his first chance at directing when the director of Always Tell Your Wife fell ill and Hitch completed the movie.

Impressed by his work, studio chiefs gave him his first directing assignment on Number 13; however, before it could be finished, the studio closed its British operation.

Hitch was then hired by Michael Balcon to work as an assistant director for the company later to be known as Gainsborough Pictures. In reality, Hitchcock did more than

this - working as a writer, title designer and art director. After several films for the company, he was given the chance to direct a British/German co-production called The Pleasure Garden (1925). Hitchcock’s career as a director finally began. He went on to become the most widely known and influential director in the history of world cinema with a significant body of work produced over 50 years.

In March, you will be able to see some of his earlier masterpieces, including Blackmail (1929), Sabotage (1936), The Secret Agent (1936) and The Lady Vanishes (1938).

Also at Cinemateket this month: the Turkish film festival CinemaTurca. Turkish films

have been winning numerous international awards of late, signalling the begining of a triumphant new golden era for Turkish cinema. Pandora’s Box (2009), which tells the story of an old woman who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, won the Best Film and Best Actress Awards at the San Sebastian Film Festival. CinemaTurca was created in collaboration with the National Film School of Denmark and the Turkish Embassy.

And for those of you who can understand Danish, there will be a series of films by the Danish film director Johan Jacobsen, who would have turned 100 on March 14.

It’s a tired take on an old formula that loses steam even before its atrocious ending. MH

Le Havre Dir: Aki Kaurismäki; Fin/Fra/ Ger com, 2011, 93 mins; André Wilms, Kati Outinen, JeanPierre Darroussin When an African boy arrives by cargo ship in the port city of Le Havre, an ageing shoe shiner takes pity on the child and welcomes him into his home. The Finnish director’s sense of humour is dry and dark as he consistently finds moments of absurdity in the midst of strife and tragedy. MH

Avoid like the Plague Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (11) Dir: Mark Neveldine & Brian Taylor; US action, 2012, 95 mins; Nicolas Cage, Idris Elba, Ciarán Hinds, Christopher Lambert It’s almost as bad as the first movie and not nearly as fun to ridicule.

And in retrospect, that makes it feel like an even bigger failure. MH

This Means War (11) Dir: McG; US com, 2012, 98 mins; Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, Til Schweiger This Means War is about two spies who are close friends, and how they compete over the same girl.

Directed by McG, this film shifts with random bursts of energy. The script is mediocre, and the settings are off. The only pleasure comes from Bane and Captain Kirk fighting over Legally Blonde. MH

J. Edgar (11) Dir: Clint Eastwood; US drama, 2011, 137 mins; Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Watts, Armie Hammer, Judi Dench; playing on Mon in Grand Teatret Even 137 minutes isn’t nearly enough to encompass roughly 50 years of one of the most interesting figures of the 20th century.

At the same time, 137 minutes is much too long for a film that never digs deep enough to uncover anything profound. KE

My Week With Marilyn (3) Dir: Simon Curtis; US drama, 2011, 99 mins; Michelle Williams, Eddie Redmayne, Kenneth Branagh It is rather difficult to portray an actress whose image is still so ‘alive’.

Williams captures the innocence, flirtation and insecurity of Monroe very well, delivering a complex performance. However, Williams never seems to fully exude the sexuality of Monroe. That was the message of this film, that Monroe was different in real life than her worldwide image. Nevertheless, Williams lacks the natural sexuality that Monroe always projeced. ED

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (11) Dir: Guy Ritchie; US action, 2011, 129 mins; Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, Noomi Rapace Ritchie gives you what you expect here - lots of action, fight scenes and raw adrenaline chopped up and slowed down depending upon his mood on the day he was editing. There isn’t anything to really bring it all together though, but you’ll still have fun with this one. KE

War Horse (11) Dir: Steven Spielberg; US drama, 2011, 145 mins; Jeremy Irvene, Emily Watson, Peter Mullin, David Thewlis, Tom Hiddleston Are you the sentimental type who cries at weddings? Then you will absolutely love this movie. If you are a cynic and a cranky old fart, you will find the sentimentality of this movie overbearing. KE

The Artist (3) Dir: Michel Hazanavicius; Fra/Bel dramedy, 2011, 100 mins; Jean Dujardin, Bernice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell It’s difficult to see why this film is being championed so highly.

Many will defend it by claiming that detractors are put off by a lack of colour, dialogue, explosions and other contemporary mainstays. But really their efforts would be better spent lauding Chaplin’s Modern Times or Murnau’s Sunrise. MW

Unfortunately for Attack the Block, the faceless, hairy, and black as night aliens often have more personality than the human actors.

Not even Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz, Paul) can fix the damage. KE

The Iron Lady (3) Dir: Phyllida Lloyed; UK/Fra drama, 2012, 105 mins; Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent, Olivia Colman, Richard E Grant From the first frame there’s a growing awareness that our perceptions of this woman are being gently and skilfully manipulated by director Phyllida Lloyd and screenwriter Abi Morgan, so much so that regardless of your political persuasion you’d have to be resolutely stubborn or emotionally retarded in failing to be moved by this biopic. Nevertheless, Margaret Thatcher is full blooded; she lives and breathes before your eyes. This film belongs entirely to Streep. MW

The Woman in Black (15) Dir: James Watkins; UK/Can/ Swe horror, 2012, 95 mins; Daniel Radcliffe, Ciarán Hinds, Janet McTeer Radcliff is taking the scare level up a notch from the Harry Potter movies with this British ghost story, where he plays a young lawyer, who travels to a remote village and discovers a vengeful ghost. Horror movie enthusiasts might not find this to be the scariest of scary movies, but if you have a less thickskinned significant other this is the movie to watch. MØ

FOLLOWING on from the lukewarm reception for Grimm is another fairy tale-inspired adult drama series, Once Upon a Time. While Grimm was a cop series in which the crimes merely echoed the stories of the Brothers Grimm (plus a few others), in Once Upon a Time (Metacritic rating of 66), the stories are given as fact. Like in Lost, each episode focuses on a character’s backstory, explaining how they came to be cursed to live out their amnesic existence in a sleepy village where – we’re guessing here - Sleepy Beauty is always zonked out on valium and Prince Charming is a necrophiliac.

It’s a “smartly-crafted reward for fans of light fantasy, with the right mix of cleverness, action and romance”, applauded the Washington Post. “It glows with a near-

theatrical shine, challenging viewers to think about TV drama as something other than boilerplate,” chimed Newsday. However, some reviewers were less confident. “To draw out the story by looping it through subplots and minidramas runs the risk of turning it into a fairy-tale soap opera,” observed the New York Daily News.

It wasn’t quite a soap, but the set of Roman Polanski’s Tess was dangerously close. Once Upon A Time: Tess (DRK, Tue 22:30) takes us back to 1978. Also going back in time is Modern classics: Wicked Game - Chris Isaak (DRK, Tue 20:30 or Thu 23:40), which offers a look at the story behind the tune that lit up David Lynch’s Wild at Heart and helped launch Helena Christensen in the US.

Elsewhere, Matt Smith makes his titular debut in Dr Who (DR HD, Sat 20:00 or Thu 23:00); catch the vapours of acclaimed hiphop doc Follow the Leader (SV1, Tue 22:30); Gandhi: The Early Years (BBC World, Sat 18:10) focuses on the spiritual leader’s fight against racism in South Africa; there’s a chance to watch the en- K5, Sat 20:00 Once Upon a Time tire series of DRK docs Chasing Churchill (Fri 16:10) and What the Industrial Revolution did for us (Sat 12:30); and there are quite a few film premieres, varying from Vinnie Jones’s terrible 7-10 Split (TV3 Puls, Sat 20:00) to the rather cool Chicago 10 (SV1, Tue 23:55), and from the pointless Management (SV1, Fri 22:00) to the absurd Bitch Slap (DR HD, Tue 21:35).
