I’VE BEEN MEANING to confront this big bloke who works in the same office building as me. But when an opportunity presented itself in the photocopier room, I chickened out. When I say big, I mean so big that when he bends over, it feels like I’m standing under a basketball net. In fact, I’m sure he’s a giant and I’ve started writing his back-story. Born in 1834, he spent his youth roaming the Ukraine, surviving on a diet of lost sepoys and local peasants, although his tale becomes a little dull when he moves to Denmark and starts working for a finance publication.

Anyhow, my quibble is a small one, but one I envisaged having a bit of fun with – preferably with an audience, for laughs and just in case things turn violent. Quite simply, this rather large man left me waiting at a T junction for five seconds longer than necessary because he failed to indicate from his (presumably reinforced) bicycle. That’s it: nothing really. But how often is the person you’re inwardly cursing on

the street somebody you can later rebuke for their actions?

Still, there are worse cycling crimes. I can’t stand the sticklers who blindly follow the rules, not questioning why they exist in the first place. Like when people perform Nazi salutes to stop (I’m guessing this one dates back to the 1940s).

What’s the point of indicating you’re going to slow down after you’ve already slowed down? It’s mirror, signal, manoeuvre, not manoeuvre, signal, act outraged when someone does their best to clip you with their Christiania bike. And while it’s true you note the drop in speed, you can’t help questioning whether it’s one of these rather bizarre people who cycles in bursts: frenetic pedalling with raised bum, freewheeling, frenetic pedalling – like they’re whipping a horse or something.

These people are everywhere, and no doubt represented in People (see G2), a new performance about the human condition by EKKO debuting this week. If it can command the kind of interest that Tom Noddy’s Bubble Show at Experimentarium (see G9) draws every January, it will be very happy indeed, or the Wallmans circus dinner show (see G3), which has been packing them in since 2004.

It’s got it all: acrobats, trapeze, tightrope walkers, but sadly no giants.

EKKO presents ‘People’

It’s a performance based on dynamics and the tension field between the individual and group.

As the performance begins, we encounter a troupe of 15 people dancing a forceful uniform choreography, but then, one by one, the dancers break out of the synchronised routines to perform a solo, rendering the rest of the group frozen in motion.

The pairing was first tried in 1893 and has become a favourite ever since. Somehow the themes of adultery, hypocrisy, drinking and to-the-death duelling (Cavalleria) dovetail nicely with those of uncontrollable passion, violence, poisoning, and murder (Pagliacci). KRG

“People enters our everyday lives in what we do, watch, hear, understand and wonder about,” enthuses choreographer Emma Nordanfors in a press release about the show.

Together with her two fellow choreographers Klara Elenius and Karina Dichov Lund, she is part of the collaboration EKKO. They have since 2004 produced stage projects in Denmark and abroad, focusing on contemporary themes. They often collaborate with artists from other genres and the expression in their productions is always inspired by a topical theme.

“Behind the show there’s a strong wish to visualise social structures and connections; this is among other things why it has been important to us to get as many dancers on stage as possible. We have also focused on a spread in both experience and age amongst the dancers,” said Nordanfors.

Gamle Scene, Kongens Nytorv, 1055 Cph K; ends 6 Feb, performances at 20:00 on Fri, Tue, Feb 3, Feb 6; tickets 95–795kr; www.kglteater.dk A rare opportunity to see the French version of Christoph Willibald Gluck’s little known opera Alceste (1776), a touching love story of mortals and deities, love and sacrifice, and life and death. German stage director Christof Loy’s production, which has received excellent reviews in Aix-en-Provence, is modern, witty and rather dark, thanks to his decision to present the story through the eyes of a child.

The delivery of the baroque music is central to the success of Alceste, and in Denmark this has been entrusted to the Concerto Copenhagen with its dynamic conductor Lars Ulrik Mortensen at the helm. CS

danced for more than 25 years, whereas the youngest is just 19 and hasn’t finished their education yet. The dancers take the audience through patterns, routines, conflicts and dreams, trying to get wiser on why we live as we do.

The show, which is aimed at an adult audience, arose from a wish to visualise societal structure in a compressed and stylistic way. The show is a direct reflection of people and how we define ourselves as individuals and as a group. We follow the individual human’s way through the show, but at the same time the entire group as a compound whole. The stage floor is full of dancers who move between small and big groups in a mix of patterns, choices, anarchy and coincidences.

After the show on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday the stage will be available for other artists. The concept is called ‘and more people’ and is free when you have bought a ticket for the show. For more information go to www.ekkoproject.net.

Set in an office, the actors merge stunts, parkour, dance, acrobatics, mime and slapstick to re-enact clips from their favourite movie scenes amidst desks, toilets and wastepaper bins. According to creator Kristján Ingimarsson, it’s where “the natural laws of gravity don’t apply and people are capable of great things.

But on Sunday the show Artistic Event and Soup will reveal what he’s been mixing up this last fortnight. Two hours of performance art and a soup composed to reflect Basbaum’s ideas under the theme of exchange and hospitality. EM

Then, just as you begin to place your drinks order something else catches your eye on the right. A band of leather-clad men dressed as futuristic rockers start banging out a rendition of an ‘80s classic. Where exactly am I talking about? It could only be the one and only Wallmans.

Wallmans isn’t merely a dinner show but a “concept” according to show producer Johan Espeland. Yes, you are served a four-course meal whilst being entertained by some of the best stage and circus performers in Scandinavia, but it’s the whole experience that contributes to Wallmans calling itself “the perfect night out”.

manager Casper Engmark will proudly stand by. “Where else can you be seated in a circus building from 1886 with 850 other people, and enjoy a great dinner, a fantastic show and then a nightclub?” said Engmark.

The show features something for everyone. A modern ballet performance of a take on Alice in Wonderland was followed by ‘Colour by Technicolour’, which brought together a medley of songs from classic black and white films. The 14 strong performers then rocked out a number that really got the house moving: ‘Adult Oriented Rock’.

The beat found its way to us and before we knew it we were bopping in our seats to ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ and jiggling to ‘Jump’.

Star performer Ernistine Ruiz told us that “despite doing the same performance night after night I must keep pushing myself to do more inspiring, fun and challenging moves.” This was evident in Ruiz’s performance as she whisked across the stage … you’d hardly guess she had a sprained ankle!

Ten minutes later and a circus theme took centre stage as artist Kimmo Hietanen wooed and wowed on the tight rope.

Amidst the action, we feasted on four wonderful courses. Beginning with nibbles, we moved onto a broccoli soup, and then some of the best duck in town.

With help from our attentive waitress, we matched this with a crisp 2009 Piuze Petit Chablis Chardonnay from France. Dessert featured a crème brûlée, and we ended on a high note with one of their cocktails from the specials menu.

In between the swanky food and the suspended dancers, I had a moment to ponder the logistics of the night. Keeping 800+ guests happy while organising 150 staff, 14 performers and 30 administration staff is no mean feat. “Timing is everything,” said Engmark. “Although the show may headline, the same energy level is required from the kitchen and the stage.”

While we felt part of something very new age, we were aware that we were part of a tradition that’s been running for over a century. Built in 1886, the Wallmans circus building was run by two circus families for 125 years. In 2004 the building was bought by the Swedishbased company Wallmans who made it into the glitzy place it is now. Sitting in the piano bar, surrounded by black and white photos of elephants, circus performers and lion tamers, we realised the historic nature of the place. Even more so when the over 50s started milling around the memorabilia, nostalgically murmuring: “Oh, I remember that.”

English poet Matthew Arnold once wrote: “The pursuit of perfection is the pursuit of sweetness and light.” In their pursuit of providing guests with the perfect night out, Wallmans delivers a sweetness to the

mouth, an increased lightness to your mood, and ignites a spark that sets you up for one heck of a great night! Wallmans is an experience not found anywhere else in Denmark, and one you’ll remember well after the final

curtain goes down. To quote Engmark: “Wallmans gives you an experience that lasts just a little bit longer,” and it certainly does.

Now, one year later, we’re lucky to welcome its return. A Folk Tale is often praised for being very accessible and appealing to all ages. Its huge popularity speaks for itself and may, in part, be a testimony to playgoers’ enduring interest in fairy tales. Another factor may be the alluring dreamy quality that stems from exquisite music and a host of fantastic characters – mostly in a seductive mood. And, of course, everybody can relate to a vicious, ugly troll. Check out next week’s InOut for our full preview. KRG

Immigrant Museum, Stavnsholtvej 3, Farum; starts Jan 27, ends April 30; open TueSat 10:00-16:00; www.immigrantmuseet.dk This is the inaugural exhibition of Denmark’s first museum dedicated to immigrants, covering 500 years of immigrant life in Denmark, from Dutch settlers in Amager in the 1500s to today and how people come to Denmark for many reasons, from work, to love, or to seek asylum.

The media arts group Chamber of Public Secrets presents a photographic archive made up of snapshots of daily life from 1950 onwards donated by immigrants, organised under the themes: Refugee Centres, Community, Individuals, and Generations. Manu Sareen, the minister of religion and equality, will be at the opening on January 27 at 14:00. BF

The queen finds solace from her public life in painting. She especially loves to incorporate colour into her impressionistic canvases and découpage works. This major exhibition is in conjunction with her 40th jubilee and offers a special glimpse of the private, creative life of the monarch. BF

The exhibition collects his architectural drawings and the drawings of his international network of architectural colleagues, including Lebbeus Woods, Michael Sorkin, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Wolf D Prix, Peter Cook, Dorte Mandrup, and Zaha Hadid. Kontor Projects, Værnedamsvej 7A, Frederiksberg; starts Jan 28, ends Feb 4; open WedFri 12:00-17:00, Sat 12:0016:00; www.kontorprojects.dk Responding to the 2010 volcanic eruptions that halted European air travel and caused other various disruptions to daily life, artists Mette Bersand and Katherine Marquis created artwork for this exhibition. After the volcano, the artists noticed the lack of air traffic and subsequently began researching flight paths and the traces that planes leave as they move through air space. The artists use photography, drawing, and other techniques to present artwork about air traffic. BF

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Gl. He uses digital technology to combine multiple images taken from extreme angles to create his iconic photographs. Forty of these giant photographs will be on display during this exhibition, along with several smaller works. BF

It Will Be the Best Movie Ever’, will be shown for the first time in Denmark as part of this exhibition, along with three other video based pieces. It’s an artistic documentary about gender roles in contemporary African society, follows the lives of three woman related to the Gambian musician Amadou Sarr. Magic and the folk religion Juju play an important role in the women’s lives and the content of Villesen’s video. Villesen works primarily in with video and photography to create her poetic reflections on relationships, place, and collaboration. BF

The show’s seven artists have created work from everyday items such as cigarette butts, cloth, iron, plants, corn, and porcelain, among many other diverse materials. Eriksen is interested in creating an exhibition that celebrates the tactile qualities of the things that surround us in our daily lives and how they are related to memory and history. The exhibition is the first of three looking at material use and culture at the Sorø Art Museum.

A Stable Relation

hen the latest dubstep remix of a new psychedelic noise rock-slash-hair metal band becomes too intense, going back to a straight-up Celtic punk band from Boston qualifies as the simple life.

The Dropkick Murphys like the simple life too. Fans jump around to lyrics about Boston sports, the local pipefitters’ union, and women with names like Peg. Their punk rock sound ranges from thrashing to sensitively upbeat.

Each year their reputation is re-established at their infamous St. Patrick’s

Day extravaganza, a last-man-standing kind of event played exclusively in Boston.

Whether packed with blue-collar Irish-Americans from South Boston or simply white guys that like to jump up and down, the Dropkick Murphys rev up the enthusiasm of the audience with a sound MTV calls “cathartic sonic revelry”. Accordion, tin whistle, bagpipes and mandolin are some of the instruments mixed with the punk guitar riffs and banging chords that sum up their intense gigs.

The group was spotlighted in 2006 when Martin Scorsese picked up their punk sea chantey, ‘I’m Shipping Up to Boston’, for The Departed, a film set among modern day Irish gangs in Boston. Leonardo DiCaprio’s character moves through a prison scene in an orange jumpsuit to the tune of Al Barr’s staccato screaming, “I’m a sailor

peg/and I lost my leg/Climbing up the topsails/I lost my leg!”

The group has not been to Denmark since 2008, and are stopping in Copenhagen between shows in Hannover and Berlin on a tour in support of their 2011 release, Going Out in Style. In a strange twist, the group decided to create a concept album, combining their own experiences to form the fictional character Cornelius Larkin, who immigrated to America at age 16, got drafted into the Korean War, married young, had lots of kids, and worked hard. Bruce Springsteen makes a guest appearance on the album, as well as Fat Mike from punk rock band NOFX and Chris Cheney from The Living End. The core sound stays the same, with bagpipe-laden riffs, driving guitars and heavy drumming.

Boston social consciousness. The album debuted at number 6 on the American charts, the highest yet for the band.

Crossing the unlikely genres of hardcore punk and traditional Irish folk, the Dropkick Murphys came out of the working-class neighbourhoods of South Boston in 1995. Trying to be a punk band, they quickly decided to embrace their true roots.

“It dawned on us that Irish music was a bigger influence on all of us than we’d realised,” founding member and bassist Ken Casey told the Houston Chronicle in 2006. “Growing up in Boston, every time you went to a wedding or a wake or your grandparents’ house, you heard that music. I went through a phase of hating it just because it’s what my (family) listened to.”

The band’s work has included collaborations with ex-Pogue Shane MacGowan and Cock Sparrer’s Colin

McFaull, as well as Ronnie Drew of the Dubliners. In 2004 the Murphy’s reworked the Boston Red Sox anthem ‘Tessie’, which became the theme song to the Sox’s World Series run that year.

Their annual St Patrick’s Day shows in Boston have become legendary, based in part of a series of live recordings released as albums of raucous bar anthems and banter.

Although he said he was clueless about the popularity of punk, Casey summarised the band’s goals in an interview with PunkNews.org: “We just try to prove that ugly, non-produced bands can also have success, maybe not sell millions of records but still have fans and tour and have a good time.”

ollowing a commendable set by Oregon-based openers Red Fang, the lights went down on an eager, near-capacity audience at Vega.

Out lumbered Mastodon’s larger-than-life guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds, his left foot in a brace after breaking it the night before. Quickly joined by his cohorts – bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders, guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor – the foursome launched into ‘Dry Bone Valley’ from its latest album The Hunter, and from there never looked back.

In a two-hour show featuring career-spanning tracks, a simple but effective light show set against a giant menacing Hunter background, and boundless energy, Mastodon put on a concert that was loud, fast, hard and crazy – in other words, just what the crowd wanted.

Global; 21:00; 180kr Led by musical troubadour Bachir Attar, this 40-year-old ensemble are one of the greatest musical phenomenons to impact Western culture since the late ‘60s. First discovered by The Rolling Stones’ Brian Jones in the late ‘60s, and working closely with a number of figures from the Beat generation, their hypnotising compositions communicate to listeners on a spiritual plane. Proclaimed by Mick Jagger as “One of the most musically inspiring groups still left on the planet,” this is an opportunity to witness one of the best concerts of the winter. (Arabic/English) Hunter’s 13 songs, this was in many ways a much different concert than the band’s 2011 Roskilde set. And though the band more than held their own on the Orange Stage, Monday night’s concert proved that the best way to feel the brute strength of Mastodon is at closer quarters.

As the Atlanta quartet roared through the early part of their set, which was heavy on tracks from 2004’s Leviathan and 2006’s Blood Mountain, the band and the audience continually fed off each other. Sanders seemed to be particularly impressed to see a young boy rocking out with his father in the upper balcony, gesturing to him numerous times as he screeched out his vocals.

What’s clear when you see Mastodon is that, although this is a band that has reached critical and popular heights in a genre dominated by tough-guy preening and über-seriousness, this is a band that has fun. This was no robotic performance; the energy and excitement coming from the band was palpable. They were even spotted doing that most un-metal of things – smiling.

Honing in on his vocal capabilities as well as his dynamic guitar skills, Robinson’s project alongside Irish singer-songwriter O’Grady takes a Tom Waits-style approach, delivering vivid folk songs about fate, love and loss.

Expect an assortment of Black Crowes numbers too. (English)

Lille Vega; 20:30; 230kr One of few rap acts who could legitimately make it into a world music gathering, de Zona is bestknown for popularising Cuban reggaeton – an energetic, charismatic and sun-kissed style of music. Perfect for warming the hands and feet of cold Copenhagers, de Zona and his troupe which includes Alexander Delgado and Yacob Carmenates - will turn Lille Vega into a Caribbean hideway. And for those serious about salsa, the concert will be introduced with a half-hour introduction to reggaeton dance by Danish mover Stine Ortvad and her group of Cuban dancers, just to set the mood. Now 36, the multi-platinum selling artist is returning to Denmark to celebrate her seminal debut record that included classics such as ‘Doo Wop (That Thing)’, ‘To Zion’ and ‘Everything is Everything’. Monday’s show was followed by a gig at Voxhall in Aarhus. The very next day, it was announced that Mastodon would be back in Denmark already in June, this time as part of a Copenhell line-up that also includes fellow heavy-hitters Slayer, Anthrax, and Lamb of God. Justin Cremer

With Taylor exiting from the project last year, Brown continues to move the music forward with Richard Davis joining on vocals and Francesco Brini on drums in live sets. With support from Danish underground DJ Djuna Barnes, you should expect to be moving your feet until the early hours of the morning.

8) Danmarks Aquarium Kavalergården 1, 2920 Charlottenlund; www.akvarium.dk Although a small facility, the National Aquarium houses a broad array of species including sharks, terrapins and the odd octopus. Children can get up close to all the tanks and experience the touch pool where they can feel various sea creatures. Check the website for touch pool opening and feeding times. 2012 is the last year you will be able to visit the Aquarium in its current location in Charlottenlund. In 2013 the innovative and greatly anticipated Blue Planet Aquarium opens.

March of the Penguins is a 2005 documentary film depicting the yearly journey of the emperor penguins in Antarctica. In autumn, all penguins of a breeding age leave the ocean, to walk inland to their ancestral breeding grounds. There, the penguins participate in a courtship that, if successful, results in the hatching of a chick. For the chick to survive, both parents must make multiple arduous journeys between the ocean and the breeding grounds over the ensuing months. With stunning cinematography any child is bound to be captivated by this one. Recommended for ages 5-18. EM

CATERPILLAR bubbles, volcano bubbles, spinning carousel bubbles and cubeshaped bubbles. The wild and wet world of these sublime pieces of floating art will blow into existence at the Experimentarium’s Bubble Festival this weekend.

The world-renowned ‘bubble guy’, Tom Noddy, is back for his eighth year to woo the hearts and minds of bubble lovers of all ages. Presenting six shows over two days, this bubbler aims to dispel the traditional notions of what your average bathtime bubble is capable of.

Noddy believes our associations between soap bubbles and childhood has kept us from absorbing the many lessons they hold. “We think we know it all. We think they’re like balloons and thin glass, that they’re fragile. But in fact there are very few things that break bubbles,” he contends.

While the science behind bubbles is stupefying, it was the aesthetics of bubbles that catapulted Noddy into becoming a bubble guy.

“It was their beauty that held my attention … but my mind was clicking away as I watched the colours swirl on the surface of their ultra-thin fluid form and I couldn’t help but ask questions about it,” he remembers.

Not just content to admire their exquisiteness, Noddy set about asking physicists, mathematicians, biologists and even astronomers how bubbles fit into their field of study. His shows are therefore not just about blowing and bursting – a large component is the educational element. “Soap

bubbles can teach us things that relate to the largest and smallest forms that we can perceive. It continues to surprise people that so much is wrapped up in a simple child’s toy,” he says.

One of Noddy’s favourite tricks is to demonstrate the resistance bubbles hold to sharp objects. “Bubbles are more concerned with wet and dry. If a needle is dry, the balloon will break but if the needle is wet it will simply slip inside the bubble,” reveals Noddy.

In addition to his mesmerising shows, the Experimentarium will transform itself into an ocean of soap bubbles with a host of activities throughout the complex. The Bubble Festival is one of the biggest festivals the Experimentarium holds each year.

French bubble artist Sylvain Levétee will be on hand creating gigantic bubbles to woo the crowds, both big and small.

Levétee “is just as popular with the

adults as he is with the kids,” enthuses Experimentarium’s communications officer Allan Richardt Jensen. “Most people know very little about the world of soap bubbles and people like Noddy and Levétee serve to expand that world.”

If your kids are looking for inspiration for their next school project, then this could be the place to find it. Noddy’s hope for his shows is that some kids will be drawn further into the subject and perhaps be captivated enough to develop skills with the bubbles. Others, he hopes, will go home and have a long conversation about bubbles in the hope that their stories catch the ear of someone else who loves these wet and wonderful things. So whether you’re two or 92, celebrate these enchanting creatures of water this weekend at the Bubble Festival.

ALTHOUGH I personally don’t subscribe to the idea that winter here is miserable, I do get that for some people toughing out the notorious dark months of January and February might be a task made easier with the addition of, say, a certain hobby or indulgence.

For lots of people that’s a good TV series, book or lazy weekends in with dinner and wine. For my mother back in England that’s pickling and preserving: yes with a certain bygone survivalists instinct, but more to do with the fact that it brightens her (otherwise dull?) world up a little.

The beauty of chilli jam is that it has the sweet and spicy

factor. You could have it with a dessert (chocolate and chilli is a good combination), but is best with savoury and the likes of cheeses, cold meats and on many types of open sandwich.

Other than actually spreading it on toast, it works with most things, is something a little different and, in the pot on the table and studded with razor sharp shards of sliced chillies, looks incredible.

Yep, your friends will be blown away that you’ve seemingly done something very scientific and complex in the kitchen; actually, making chilli jam is perhaps the most unchallenging thing one can do in a kitchen other than operating a toaster.

Dissolve the sugar in the vinegar in a pan over a low heat.

Don’t stir. (Although dragging a wooden spoon through the mixture is a good way to see if the sugar has dissolved, as there will be no crystals stuck to the back of it).

Add the chilli and pepper mixture, turn up the heat to high and boil for 10 minutes.

Take the pan off the heat and leave to cool for an hour.

You’ll see the mixture turn from liquid into thicker, syrup and then a jelly as it cools down.

Put the mixture into the jars and seal them properly.

Keeps for three months in a cool, dark place - refrigerate once opened.

On our visit our favourites were the Dum Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. The main courses are substantial, honestly cooked and rich in taste and include Vienna schnitzel with baked new potatoes and coleslaw and chicken breast topped with apricots and cheese. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. From the fish and chip expat family nights at 17:00 on the last Friday of every month, to enjoying the Sunday roast (lamb, all the trimmings, just 99kr, kids portion for 58kr), they are always welcome. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day - serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, and upstairs there’s a new lounge area, which is the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. Each dish can be easily matched by one of Brew Pub’s own concoctions from the casks across the courtyard. AK Kennedy’s Irish Bar Gammel Kongevej 23, 1610 Cph V; Open Mon-Sun 12:0002:00 It’s not an Irish pub. Instead it’s a pub owned by Irishmen, and there’s a big difference. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits.

Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH

It’s the perfect place for sports fans to mingle, or for live music which it provides every day. It also serves food all day from 10am to 10pm, and diners can find peace from the music and sport on a table overlooking the walking street, or on the first floor balcony overlooking Amagertorv. BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. Facing Tivoli’s arches and just a stone’s throw from Strøget, it’s the ideal pit-stop on a tour of the city centre. LB

All’s well that ends well in the Berg: it’s all gone Chai Wong

While away the long winter evenings in the cosy, intimate surroundings of Frederiksberg’s newest Southeast Asian eatery

noodle salad, wasn’t as good. The fish had a crispy coat and succulent centre, but the salad was a bit sad. The trick seems to be to choose wisely. Get it right and you get dishes that are amazingly tasty and great value for money (starters range from 55–125kr and mains from 145–195kr). Get it wrong and you’ll be looking longingly at other people’s plates.

Fortunately, our final, belt-busting course of banana cake with salted coconut ice cream was a winner. Elaborately presented on a vast wooden platter, it was ridiculously good, with the crispy fried cake,

SUNDAY BRUNCH

A SUCCESSION of sad little restaurants have opened and then swiftly closed on the corner of our street since we moved to HC Ørstedsvej. First a French café, then an Italian restaurant, most recently an exceedingly dodgy joint that hardly ever seemed to open at all. So hallelujah, you can imagine our delight when we heard that Henrik Yde-Andersen and Lertchai Treetawatchaiwong, the dynamic duo behind Michelin-starred Kiin Kiin, had also noticed that this Frederiksberg corner was screaming out for a reinvention.

Fast forward a couple of months and we now have Chai:Wong, a Singapore kitchen serving up a mixture of Asian food that was inspired by a trip Henrik and Lertchai took this winter to Hong Kong, Hanoi, Singapore, Seoul, Bangkok and Beijing.

From the pavement Chai:Wong looks dark, very dark in fact with its black awnings, black woodcut screens, black Buddha and black tables and chairs. But come nightfall – when the ginormous lanterns are lit outside and the deep, sumptuous window seats are full of chattering clientele - the gloom is replaced by glamour. Step inside and you find a sophisticated, bustling little restaurant – hyggelig done Asian-style.

It’s completely packed on a Monday night with all 48 dining slots, including bar stools, full with expectant customers. Perhaps this instantaneous success explains the friendly yet sluggish service. It’s not that the waiter/chefs – all poached from their native countries to produce authentic Asian cooking – are slacking. They’re just completely rushed off their feet. No matter, the minute our lychee mojitos arrive accompanied by crudités and devilishly calorific peanut dipping sauce, we’re quite happy to sit, spy and peruse the enticing menu.

For starters we opt for the Summer rolls – one duck, one prawn – the Pomelo salad with grilled prawns, and Dim sum with sesame prawn toast. Of the three it was the salad that really had us scraping the plate.

Laced with mint, spring onions and potent red chilies, it was a generous and refreshing delight. The Summer rolls erred on bland, lacking the customary kick of fresh herbs, but my god, the sesame prawn toast was good and the steaming little parcels of pork and seafood spot on.

For main we opted for one of three signature dishes: Prawns cooked in rice noodles with star anise and lovage. Boom.

Served straight out of the saucepan, this was street food at its very best: the noodles infused with all the flavours of the prawns and ancient herbs while nestled on a cheeky layer of bacon. Our second main, the Black and white fish with cucumber and sesame

velvety ice cream and bonus dollop of dolce de leche creating a fantastic combination of sweet and sour tastes and textures. Thank goodness this isn’t on the takeaway menu or otherwise I’d soon be approaching 20 stone.

For drinks there is a short cocktail menu and an impressive choice of wines and champagnes, served by both the glass and the bottle. There are plenty of affordable (by Danish standards) options as well as some bottles with more punchy price tags.

We started with a Bandol Rose, followed by the Big Fat & Gutsy Arakoon Shiraz - both of which held their own against the strong

flavours of Asian food.

It was fantastic to see the ever-so-charming Henrik nipping back and forth into the kitchen, despite having just jumped off a long haul flight. His absolute involvement is obvious, down to the choice of painting on the wall.

So we left Chai:Wong feeling very full, a bit tipsy and most of all excited that Frederiksberg finally has an affordable, chic, friendly and tasty neighbourhood restaurant. I for one will definitely be going back.

ugar. When you add a little bit to your coffee or your cereal it tastes good. When you start pouring the stuff down your throat as if it was water, the sweetness becomes overpoweringly bitter. This essentially is War Horse – a film so sickly sweet that you could probably catch flies with it.

So, what side of the fence do you fall on: are you the sentimental type who cries at weddings? Then you will absolutely love this movie. If you are a cynic and a cranky old fart, you will find the sentimentality of this movie overbearing.

It’s just before the outbreak of the First World War. A struggling English farming family needs a work horse to help plough the field. At auction, Ted (Mullen) can’t help himself and buys a thoroughbred instead. His son, Albert (Irvine), promises his mum (Watson) to care for the horse he has named Joey, train him and somehow get it to plough the rocky fields so that they can keep it (both the horse and their farm). He succeeds, but alas, the rains wash away their crop. As the First World War begins, with the family desperate for money, Ted sells the horse to a cavalry officer (Hiddleston), and Albert vows to find his pal wherever the war horse may be. And so Joey’s adventure through the Great War begins.

War Horse is a Steven Spielberg

“Come on, it’s only a stampede into no man’s land and certain death: why the long face?” kind of movie. He has a fondness for modern melodramas guaranteed to satisfy both the young and old, especially when they are grandiose, long and showy. I don’t think it is a stretch to call Spielberg a master at film making, but this picture is no masterpiece.

While every detail is carefully considered, and every leaf on every tree is perfectly aligned, and every equine muscle and every country cottage and every puff of smoke from a fired weapon is perfectly framed, there is simply not enough of a story to back up the terrific look of the film. And here’s a

question - is it simply not possible for Spielberg to make a film without John Williams writing the score?

What we do know is that Spielberg can direct the hell of out a war and battlefield scene as he has shown on numerous occasions. And it isn’t until we actually reach the war that the movie picks up a little momentum. From the frightened soldier whose hands are shaking so much that he can barely pull the pin on his grenade, to the rats that immediately congregate around the fresh corpses, it’s these types of scenes that bring

reality to war – all be it, on a much lighter scale than some of his past efforts like Saving Private Ryan, due in large part to the nature of the audience. It’s just frustrating these scenes are too few and far between - all the heartfelt and tender moments of the film are dedicated solely to pulling your heartstrings take centre stage all too often.

For the most part, the characters (aside from the horse) are pretty flat stereotypes – the noble cavalry officer, the greedy landowner, the kindly grandfather, etc. Watson and Mullan

manage to find some realistic moments as the struggling parents, but the main lead, the newcomer Irvine, is not so much awe-inspiring as awewondering, as in I wonder how they came to cast this guy in the first place.

War Horse is a beautifully photographed film and should be appreciated for its terrific work in this area and may be worth seeing simply for this reason. However, you must remember that this film is so sappy that you could probably tap it for maple syrup.

Some like it not: Williams a misfit as Monroe My Week With Marilyn

I

N THE GENRE of historical fiction, you will often see a plot device that uses an unknown protagonist: typically a fictional person. This character acts from the audience’s perspective, guiding us around the famous historical figures and

driving the story. If you didn’t know My Week with Marilyn was based on a book written by a real person - Colin Clark - you might think this is the device being used. The story either comes across as historical fiction, or even worse, fan fiction.

Clark (Redmayne) loves movies and wants to work in them. As a young, naïve 20-something he ventures off to London to try and get involved with Laurence Olivier’s (Branagh) next film. Clark succeeds and gets to meet the incredibly famous Marilyn Monroe (Williams). As the production drags on due to Monroe, Clark and Monroe develop a relationship.

This is where we get to see what

the real Marilyn Monroe was like.

It is rather difficult to portray an actress whose image is still so ‘alive’. Williams captures the innocence, flirtation and insecurity of Monroe very well, delivering a complex performance. However, Williams never seems to fully exude the sexuality of Monroe. That was the message of this film, that Monroe was different in real life than her worldwide image.

Nevertheless, Williams lacks the natural sexuality that Monroe always projected.

Part of the problem lies with the fact that Williams is a relatively famous actress in her own right. It’s hard to forget that you’re watching Williams

pretending to be Monroe.

Though there are few actors in Hollywood who look as similar to Monroe as Williams does, it would have been better if the filmmakers had cast someone not so recognisable in the role.

The film has fine aesthetics and decent acting, but the story just isn’t that great. Clark actually wrote two books, which have wildly opposite descriptions of events. One wonders just how reliable an author he is. It is rather convenient for him that these books came out in 1995 and 2000, a time at which neither Monroe nor Olivier nor most of the production team were alive to contest the contents.

Cruise makes us feel the stakes here - showing his mortality and hesitating before leaping, never more so than when he tackles one of the film’s signature moments: scaling the world’s tallest building.

The action beats are breathless, violent and visceral blurs. Bird paces the story with multiple action scenes that are not only newfangled but innovative. If you don’t enjoy this ride then entertaining you is mission: impossible. EM

Whether it’s the fact that all of Stockholm unaccountably speaks English, or that Fincher’s version has grown up in the shadow of its model – an excellent work – is hard to say. Real Steel (11) Dir: Shawn Levy; US action, 2011, 126 mins; Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly Real Steel has a fairly predictable plot and an ending so cheesy that you are liable to choke on it.

However, you find yourself caring not only about the human characters but the robots too.

All in all, Real Steel looks like the real deal. KE

US action, 2011, 129 mins; Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, Noomi Rapace Ritchie gives you what you expect here - lots of action, fight scenes and raw adrenaline chopped up and slowed down depending upon his mood on the day he was editing. There’s an awkward sense that the jaunty visual comedy of Penn as an ageing rocker belongs in a different genre than that of Nazi war camps. Yes, they form a coherent whole that is both entertaining and superficially engaging, but the problem lies in the lack of sincerity within the subjects themselves. MW

APOLOGIES to those of you who’d prefer this to be a preview of all the films this week, but you’ll have to pick up a Danish newspaper for an explanation of the plot of American Beauty. Nevertheless, this week we’re making an exception, because if we didn’t, you probably wouldn’t know it was on.

Garage, a 2007 Irish film – they started making some pretty good movies during their economic boom – is a work of beauty and understatement that would most likely be considered too slow and uneventful for mainstream television.

So thank god for DR K (by their standards, this is an action flick) because Irish comedian Pat Shortt’s heart-wrenching performance as a petrol station attendant in the middle of nowhere who may very well

be the loneliest man ever committed to celluloid, is a tour-de-force. Well worth turning your iPhone off for, if you can for more than 30 minutes without getting the shakes.

Staying in Ireland, Knuckle (SV1, Tue 22:00) is a brutal account of bare-knuckle fighting in the traveller community: cock-fighting for humans. Made over 12 years, it concentrates on a feud between three families, and at times is in danger of becoming a snuff movie.

Elsewhere, Cat Ladies takes us into the world of four women who love being in control, even if they do smell of cat – one of them has 16 (you think that’s bad, another has 123!); there’s the fourth season of US legal drama Damages (SV1, Sun 22:00); Talking Movies (BBC World, Sat 20:30) pays a visit to the

Sundance Film Festival; there’s the third season of Gavin and Stacey (SV2, Mon 19:30); Britain’s Greatest Machines (DR K, Mon 20:55), Chris Barrie from Red Dwarf takes a look at some of the 20th century’s most important inventions; Annie Leibovitz: Life through a Lens (DR K, Fri 22:25 & Sun 12:55) depicts America’s most starriest DR K, Tue 21:00 Garage photographer to the stars; Origins of Us (DR2, Wed 19:05) is a threeparter doc about six million years of evolution dumbed down into three hours; Seven Dwarves (K4, ep1: Sat 20:00, ep 2: Wed 21:00) is an amusing UK reality programme about little people preparing for panto; and Australia’s Great Flood: Brisbane (SV1, Mon 21:00) is an harrowing doc about last year’s mayhem.
