DID YOU KNOW that the average Dane spends three percent of their life watching children unwrap presents? And a further one percent looking for the end of the sellotape – it’s like the rolls these days have a secret formula that renders it invisible so you have to buy the dispenser, which ironically has a jagged steel blade, exactly what you’re looking for in your frustration to end it all. Sellotape is actually a brand that - like Hoover, Phillips screwdrivers, and rather bizarrely butterscotch and heroin (Bayer AG was the trademark owner) – has become genericised in Britain but not many other places. It’s called scotch tape in America, presumably because trying to find the end leads to you reaching for the whisky. While most people regard Xmas as a time to make merry with the family, I see it as a celebration that I won’t have to locate, buy, unravel or unpeel another roll of sellotape until somebody with an imagination bypass suggests having a Secret Santa at the next Christmas
party or that infernal dice game, which I have learnt to cheat at, just so I can destroy all the presents without unwrapping them. But while the julefrokost is crap, New Year’s Eve in Denmark is up there with the best, and as our feature on G2 proves (there are also additional listings on G8), there’s an extraordinary breadth of events to choose from should you not end up celebrating it at someone’s home. Just remember that most of the pubs – the preferred location of 90 percent in the UK – are shut, so it’s imperative you give it some thought before 9pm on December 31. By that time, the Danes have been at it for three hours, hurrahing at the queen’s speech and guffawing at ‘Dinner for One’, a horrendously unfunny one-off comedy from 1963 about a drunk butler that is unknown in Britain but loved in Denmark and Germany, where it was actually filmed and called ‘Der 90. Geburtstag’, which sounds more like the name of a POW camp. In fact, according to the Guinness Book of Records, it’s the most frequently repeated TV programme ever – with a cult following in many other countries including Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Austria. Which, roughly translated, means the average person there has spent one percent of their life watching it.
New Year’s Eve in Copenhagen Various venues, Dec 31 NEW YEAR’S EVE, ‘over-rated’ in so many countries, often exceeds expectations in Copenhagen. Ladies don sparkling cocktail dresses and gentlemen have an excuse to wear a suit and tie, as the city that has been hiding in the cold comes alive with free flowing booze, loud music, and thousands of people in high spirits. As the night reaches its peak, be prepared for the midnight countdown. Make sure you have your champagne and your kranse kage (almond cake) at hand, staples for a Danish New Year. Then, find a couch, chair, table (or any elevated surface that you can), grab the hand of the person next to you, count down and leap off into the New Year! The traditional midnight jump is very important for starting the New Year off right and if you happen to trip, it will bring bad luck (so make sure to cling on to your most sober friend). For those wishing to ring in the New Year in the great outdoors, as tradition goes, at midnight countless Copenhagen locals and visitors meet at the Town Hall Square, as millions watch its clock on TV waiting to jump in unison, to welcome in the New Year with a fireworks extravanganza. We recommend going to either the lakes, Islands Brygge, or the Knippelsbro and Langebro bridges.
New Year’s Eve on the water
Havnegade, between Peder Skramsgade and Tordenskjoldsgade (close to Nyhavn); sails 19:00-22:00 (restaurant & bar open later); 1,595kr for dinner; 4675 6460; www.sagaqueen.dk Does spending New Year’s Eve calmly drifting along the harbour float your boat? Then step abroad the MS Saga Queen and enjoy a sevencourse menu (including welcome drinks, wine, champagne and kransekager/almond cakes) and live music on the boat trip. The charming lounges and professional crew promises to provide a truly unique New Year’s Experience and fun for everyone whether you are two, 22 or 82.
New Year’s Eve by the lakes
Søpavillonen, Gyldenløvesgade 24, Cph K; 995kr per person; tickets at www. billetagenten.dk; 3315 1224, info@ soepavillonen.dk for more info Starting with the queen’s New Year speech, the all-inclusive price includes a welcome drink until 22:45, a luxury buffet including dessert, beer, wine and coffee before and after dinner, live music from the New Year Lake Party Band, champagne, New Year cake, a concert and finally the late-night DJ. The lakeside location provides a wonderful view. If you don’t fancy having dinner, come later and buy tickets at the door for a cheaper price for music and dancing.
Performance Mozart
Betty Nansen Teatret, Frederiksberg Alle 57, Frederiksberg; ends Jan 15, performances Sat 17:00, Mon, Tue & Thu 20:00; tickets: 150– 360kr; www.bettynansen.dk The team behind the theatre gigs Gasolin’, Come Together and Bob Dylan are back. They’ve been given the ultimate challenge – to create a theatre show based on Mozart’s music. With a sense of timing and dizzying costumes, the unreasonable Cederholm & Co takes you on a journey through Mozart’s world of famous compositions, as you’ve never seen or heard them before. Rediscover Mozart’s big hits in a new guise with some fantastic singers and actors. EM
Ring in the New Year with thousands
Cph K and Cph V-Cph Ø; 00:00-until they run out of fireworks At midnight, Copenhagen’s lakes and City Hall Square (Rådhuspladsen) explode into a frenzy of fireworks, as revellers and professionals alike ignite their explosives. This leads to both an awe-inspiring and nerve-wracking experience as rogue fireworks are unfortunately an issue and injuries are reported each year. Don’t let that scare you away, however, it’s a spectacle that cannot be missed!

On the dock at Færgehavnsvej 35, Cph Ø; 31 Dec 2010 23:00-1 Jan 2012 05:00; 395kr includes entrance hall, cloakroom, champagne, cake & dance floor; contact stine@runningdinner.dk or michelle@runningdinner.dk for info; www.runningdinner.dk to register Join 999 of Copenhagen’s other young and hot singles ready to ring in the New Year with balloons, confetti, hats and flirting. The pairing of the two (colloquially referred to by aficionados as the ‘Cav and Pag’ double-bill) was first tried in 1893 and has become a favourite with audiences ever since. Somehow the themes of adultery, hypocrisy, drinking and to-the-death duelling (Cavalleria) dovetail nicely with those of uncontrollable passion, violence, poisoning, and murder (Pagliacci). KRG

Cinderella
Krudttønden, Serridslevvej 2, 2100 Cph Ø; ends Jan 7, performances at 19:00 (weekdays) & 16:00 (weekends) until Fri, and then Jan 3–7; tickets: adults 150kr, children 120kr, via www.ctcircle.dk or 2812 3680, tickets@ctcircle.dk for group discounts Pantomime is a noisy, raucous, gender-bending part of the classic UK Christmas and the Copenhagen Theatre Circle is bringing the British tradition to Copenhagen with an origi-
nal production of the children’s classic Cinderella, which has been penned by the director Barry McKenna, a winner of the Reumert Award, Denmark’s foremost prize for the performing arts. Panto involves musical numbers, loud costumes, and plenty of drag. High jinks ensue, and the audience is encouraged to yell, scream, boo, and cheer the villains and the heroes. If the lines “He’s behind you” and “Oh no, it isn’t” aren’t familiar, don’t worry, they will be by the time it’s finished. McKenna’s given the plot a welcome update, with lots of juicy parts. And rest assured that the many sexual entendres and innuendos – as vital to a good panto as drag and slapstick – fly over the heads of the younger audience. They might get the joke, but in a flashback ten years from now. KD

What dragged you away from your home in 2011 – and was it any good? The Inout team pay tribute to the shows, performers, festivals and organisers that impressed them the most over the last 12 months.
Top Theatre
1. vita and virginia You cannot ignore the high praise this received in the Danish media and within the theatre community. Sue Hansen Styles and Angela Heath-Larsen proved that a niche play will pull in equal numbers of Danes and internationals.
2. The Zoo Story Adam Brix’s commanding, animalistic performance in That Theatre’s atmospheric drama announced the arrival of a new exciting talent on the Englishlanguage theatre’s scene.
3. A Christmas Carol Tom McEwan’s turn as the Ghost of Christmas Present was surely the performance of the season in this CTC production. Now 71, let’s hope we haven’t seen the last of an actor this city has always been blessed to have. 4. oleanna Two in the top five for That Theatre Company, which under the leadership of Ian Burns continues to go from strength to strength.
5. Cinderella The CTC are ably demonstrating that pantomime isn’t just the graveyard for washed-up soap stars and, in their absence, exceedingly good fun for all the family. Ben Hamilton
Top festival
1. Zulu Comedy festival Special props to the organisers for booking some quality international acts, like Britain’s Paul Foot. Looking forward to seeing who they attract in 2012.
Top Music festival
Top events
1. Smukfest The Beautiful Festival in 2011 emerged from Roskilde’s shadow to take the plaudits with an impressive line-up including Tom Jones, Ozzy Osbourne and Robyn.
1. Christiania’s 40th birthday It started with a breakfast and then finished, in true Christiania style, six days later. But not only was it the freetown’s 40th birthday, it was also its most momentous year - the rest of the city now waits with baited breath, with just a hint of cannabis smoke being exhaled, to see how it will move on from its mid-life crisis.
2. Northside Northside was once again a hit with audiences thanks to an international line-up including The Streets, White Lies and Band of Horses, which many other more established festivals couldn’t match. 2. Copenhagen Sakura festival This year’s was a particularly poignant affair following the earthquake in March.
3. Copenhagen Puppet festival This biennial celebration of puppetry never fails to disappoint. Who said only the kids should like this genre?
4. wondercool At last, something to do during February. The year’s most dreary month just got reinvented – long may it continue.
5. Copenhagen ink festival Back after a long absence, it was time in April to get your freakin’ ink on, with Lizardman in some cases. Ben Hamilton
3. roskilde Despite the rain and complaints about it lacking big names, Roskilde remains Denmarks biggest festival and in 2011 was once again one of the places to be.
4. Strøm Celebrating its fifth year, this champion of the underground scene is quickly becoming one of the most important electronic music events in northern Europe.
5. Distortion The notorious street festival has grown out of proportion within the last few years, with attendances on some nights quadrupling this year. It continues to pack a punch, but is in danger of becoming too mainstream. malene S ØrSted
2. Culture Night How this night manages to surpass itself every year remains one of the city’s great mysteries. Definitely an evening when it’s a crime to stay in.
Top opera
1. Die frau ohne Schatten Staged by Kasper Holten, Richard Strauss’s Die Frau Ohne Schatten (Kvinden uden skygge) was one of the most spectacular and praised operas in many years at the Royal Danish Opera. Find out what all the fuss is about from February 3.
2. Cavalleria rusticana & Pagliacci This ongoing Italian double-bill from the 1890s, affectionately known as ‘Cav and Pag’ in opera circles, has been delighting audiences, both visually and aurally, with its tales of passion, jealousy and murder.
3. irish Day at the races If any day marks the coming of spring, it’s the Irish Rover’s Irish Day at the Races, which every year never fails to deliver, whether you’re there to have a flutter, have a great day out with the kids, or try your luck in the ladies’ hat competition. 4. St Alban’s fete If you haven’t been before, you’re missing out on a truly British institution where the cream teas and selections of Englishlanguage books really are second to none.
5. Children’s festival Sure, it’s a biased selection because we organised it, but there was undoubtedly something special about how the storm clouds parted and allowed the sun to shine down on the proceedings in Valby Park - an omen surely that this is an event we should run every year to introduce international children to the world of opportunity on their doorstep. 1 Malpais A challenging performance that explored the concept of fear, featuring intense performances by Siri Wolthoorn and choreographer Tina Tarpgaard.
2 A folk Tale A gorgeous new version of August Bournonville’s 1854 ballet in which Maria Bernholdt blew everyone away as the troll girl who doesn’t quite fit in – a performance that earned her a Reumert prize as dancer of the year. 3 Love Songs A dance performance like a box of good chocolate: smooth, indulgent and very enjoyable. The fiery Italian dancer Luca Marazia and the sensual Brazilian Alessandro Sousa Pereira stood out, performing Tim Rushton’s silky and seductive choreography. mette WindBerg Baarup
3. Boris Godunov Boasting fantastic attention to detail, sets that were reminiscent of Bladerunner, and some of international opera’s biggest names, this couldn’t go wrong.
1 Drift Kitt Johnson stunned with a performance that explored manifold ways of staging the body’s appearance in dance.
4. Cosi fan tutte A witty and well-sung rendition of Mozart’s classic tale of love. Wolfgang would be proud.
2 virtuose trin (virtuosi Steps) A triple bill with which the Royal Danish Ballet paid tribute to Denmark’s great 19th century ballet master August Bournonville.

Let Mahler provide some post-holiday relaxation
Mahler’s 9
Koncerthouse, DR Byen Thursday 5 Jan 21:00; 19:30; www.billetlugen.dk
T
HERE’S NOTHING better than a good dose of classical music after Christmas. With gift anxiety a distant memory and with a newly expanded waste size, the time surrounding the New Year is a period of relaxed contemplation, a time to truly take in the sights and sounds of the city. And who better to help you along your way than Gustav Mahler, an amazing composer often overlooked when compared to his more famous peers. In early January, his acclaimed Number 9 composition is being performed at DR Byen’s Koncerthuset.
Born in 1860 in what is now the Czech Republic, Mahler was influenced by the traditional composers as well as modern ones. Mahler was to combine the two worlds, becoming an important bridge for classical music into the 20th century. As well as honouring old traditions, he actively sought to extend them, adding his own twist to the genre. After gaining popularity in the prewar era, Mahler’s music was shunned by the Nazi regimes. After 1945, his music began to be studied with renewed interest and has gained in popularity ever since, leading to Mahler being one of the most often performed composers in the world.
FRIDAY 23 Christmas and Blues with Jake Green Mojo; 22:00; Free Adm One of the few music venues that remains open throughout the Christmas holiday season, Copenhagen’s prime blues club becomes a hotspot for those wanting to get out of the house and settle down with some good old fashioned blues. Served up with mulled wine, Christmas beer and cookies, Copenhagenbred Green and his merry men – Thomas ‘Jingle Bells’ Birck on bass and ‘Santa’ Hans Rosenberg behind the drums – will take an audience through the night before Christmas Eve with a festive set. Whether or not Green is worth spending the night before Christmas Eve with depends on whether you’re in need of a small brandy to celebrate the completion of your Christmas shopping, or just simply a break from your family. Mahler was a musical prodigy from an early age. His parents recognised his potential, allowing him to be schooled by some of the finest tutors they could afford. After graduating from the Vienna Conservatory in 1878 he worked with some of Europe’s finest musicians, culminating in his appointment as director of the Vienna Court Opera in 1887. Although he was initially well known for his conducting, his compositions were soon recognised, leading to a relatively small, yet intricate, series of compositions for which he is now best known. The Number 9 was to be Mahler’s last composition. The piece can best be
described as progressive, with a series of key changes that evolve through the performance. Stretching for more than 80 minutes, his Number 9 begins in a loose sonata form, containing some interesting references to other artists, including a motif that resembles a famous Beethoven composition. The second movement is livelier at the start, progressing into dark and often disturbing areas that hold death as a key theme. The third movement takes the form of a rondo and is both humorous and violent - the intense trumpeting is a highlight. The final part is both quiet and reflective, perhaps echoing Mahler’s own
WEDNESDAY 28 Benny Holst Trio Mojo; 21:30; 80kr Now 69, Holst is something of a cult blues figure in Denmark. Holst’s weathered voice has been compared to Bob Dylan, and his style of blues aligned next to some of the great historic performers. Playing alongside him will be guitarist Jacob Rathje and violinst Martin Andersen, whose input will give Holst’s vocals depth and a platform on which to work. Fast becoming an annual festive tradition, Holst could well remedy your post-Christmas blues. (English) DvdN Bo Stief + Bobo Moreno feat. Ole Kock Hansen Montmartre; 20:00; 285kr In Montmartre’s first era, Bo Stief was one of the most prominent bassists on the scene and still remains one of Scandinavia’s most illustrious jazz bassists. Costarring will be Stief ’s step-son, Bobo Moreno. One of Denmark’s few celebrated vocalists,
Moreno has performed in some of the country’s most prestigious venues and certainly isn’t short of admirers, having released a string of successful collaborative records. Last but not least, pianist Hansen is another one of Montmartre’s revered performers in the same category as Stief. (English/Danish) DvdN
Ridin’ Thumb
Amager Bio; 21:00, 185kr The Danish soul-funk band Ridin’ Thumb is led by two founding guitarists Martin Finding and Nicolai Halberg and the primary vocalist since 1997, Jonas Winge. Their orchestra-sized band consists of trumpeters, a tenor and baritone saxophonist, a bassist and a keyboardist. Ablaze with energetic, uplifting and funky tracks - like ‘Party Down’ and ‘Set Your Mind Free’ - that rarely sell you short on the slap-bass, Ridin’ Thumb is a tiptop funk band. (English) DvdN
acceptance of his death that was to occur soon after the ninth was completed. Mahler died having never heard the ninth performed; however, his attention to detail and meticulous planning would ensure he was pleased with the piece. Whether you know your composers or not, Mahler is sure to please. His work has been praised for decades, and with the host of musicians assembled to play his composition, there’s little doubt they’ll do it justice. With the New Year rapidly approaching, it might be the time to remind ourselves of something cultural. ANDY RUGG
SATURDAY 31 Mikkel Nordsø Band feat. Raul Rekow Huset i Magstræde; 22:00; 170kr Danish jazz pioneer Mikkel Nordsø has been the leading figure behind a number of Copenhagen jazz projects - in his early years he reinvented the Danish jazz guitar with such groups as Sneakers and Buki-Yamaz. His current band - a percussionheavy quintet with whom he has worked with for many years defy all known boundaries, coalescing jazz, Indian and classical traditions into vibrant, imaginative and authentic musical masterpieces. To add the cherry on top, the group will be working with the famous Latin jazz percussionist Raul Rekow - who has been an integral part of Santana since the ‘70s - in what promises to be one of the most exciting jazz fusion concerts Copenhagen has seen this year. (English) DvdN
New Year’s Evening Swing Party: Peter Marrott + His Firecrackers feat. Ayoe Angelica Montmartre; 19:00; 1,680kr Swing jazz seems to have undergone a resurgence in the past couple of years with several Scandinavian swing groups playing to sell out crowds at the local jazz and blues venues. But this isn’t just a concert, it’s an all-night party package that includes a welcome drink, a three-course meal and champagne to wade in the new year - not to mention that the orchestra performing tonight includes an all-star cast of some of the best artists on the Danish jazz scene including the veteran pianist Niels Jørgen Steen, the unconventional trombonist Mads Hyhne, and the outstanding Danish-Ethiopian vocalist Ayoe Angelica. Montmartre have laid down the blueprints for one hell of a way for jazz fans to celebrate the new year, but be sure to book your place fast with tickets already limited. (English) DvdN
New Year’s Party with Bluestribunalet Mojo 23:00; 120kr Tonight Copenhagen will be in full swing with parties breaking out across the city. Few venues are open to live music and even less offering live blues bands so if you’re set on that idea then you certainly needn’t look further. Tonight two of Denmark’s established blues groups, The Fried kra Band and The Blue Overdrive, will collaborate and exchange blues notes in an exciting live showdown, taking you into the new year with moody bass lines, wicked electric strokes of the guitar, and soulful vocals. Not performing until 23:00, it’s unlikely anybody will be sober by this hour, and if you still have more in the tank after the gig, then there’s also an all-night disco to follow, commencing at 02:00. Looking back at 2011’s top tunes
G7
The time between christmas and new Year’s is relatively quiet on the music front, so Inout thought we’d take this opportunity to look back at the albums and musical acts that kept our heads bopping and our feet dancing in 2011. not meant to be any sort of definitive list, this is just a collection of thoughts from some of the office’s diverse music fans. Top international albums of the Year as selected by Matthew grant anson
1. when saints Go machine With an opening spot at the Roskilde Festival, 2011 was a phenomenal year for Denmark’s electro-pop duo du jour, who followed up on the success of their debut album with the seminal album Konkylie, an EP that captured the hearts and souls of Saints fans old and new. 2. The raveonettes The endearing Shoegazing duo from Sønderborg have sailed casually through 2011, cementing their reputation as one of the best exports of the nation with their fifth album, Raven in The Grave, and solid performances at both Roskilde and Vega.
1. agnes Obel Obel’s distinct sound is very minimalistic, with a piano moving us softly through the brilliant album Philaharmonics, filled with storytelling and poetic lyrics. Obel does not make feelgood music, but if you dare to enter her melancholic darkness, a beautiful adventure awaits. 2. raised among wolves Here is the recipe of indie/folk in its purest form. If you like Death Cab for Cutie or Final Fantasy you will like these uptempo, melodic, capping, beating, blowing, playing and singing boys too.
3. wafande Few artists have captured the spirit of the times as well as the nomadic Wafande. His seismic tune ‘Lang Vej Hjemme’ encapsulated the disappointments of a nation bored stiff by the growing popularity of a certain right-wing political party. His collaborations with the likes of rising starlet Lil Kaka have bred a new culture of critical thinking amongst Danish youth. 4. Hymns From nineveh After wandering about in Italy, Norway and The Netherlands, devotional folkpop band Hymns From Nineveh have finally started to garner success locally. HFN’s eponymous album hit the streets in February, featuring contributions from over 20 artists, and unsurprisingly skyrocketed up the charts. This was followed by an enigmatic performance at Roskilde and a string of fascinating shows at all manner of venues, from churches to prisons. 5. i Got You On Tape Dreamy rock quartet I Got You on Tape have continued to surprise and impress as the years have gone by. 2011 saw the four mates deliver a poetic, contemplative and well-made album, Church of the Real, adding perspective to their intriguing musical repertoire and laying the foundation for what can only be a promising 2012. Best of the rest: 6. Reptile & Retard 7. Malk De Kojn 8. Sebastien Lind 9. Klumben 10. TurboWeekend
3. The raveonettes Sharin Foo and Sune Wagner have the recipe for true retro rock. They have their roots firmly planted in a simple structure with their guitar-driven sound, low beats and simple, melodic structure. Raven in the Grave was not nearly as pop as their previous albums, but more melancholic and thoughtful. They are even better live.
4. Hymns From nineveh Jonas Petersen’s album Hymns from Nineveh contained some beautiful songs inspired by the Bible. He has managed to capture something divine in his sound, and you can almost sense a religious vibe. His sound has a resemblance to Jeff Buckley, Antony and The Johnsons and José Gonzalez. 5. D-a-D D-A-D roared back into full rock n’ roll mode in 2011. Their distinct voluminous sound with pounding drums and blistering guitar solos make D-A-D a classic that you can’t avoid and one that you either like or don’t. Best of the rest: 6. Nephew 7. Oh Land 8. Ginger Ninja 9. Tim Christensen & The Damn Crystals 10. Søren Huus
1. deafheaven, Roads to Judah A black metal band on a hardcore label whose debut release has a grand total of four tracks sounds like a recipe for disaster, but it’s actually the makings of the best extreme metal album of 2011. Despite seeming like diametric opposites, deafheaven’s despair via black metal finds a perfect partner in the elongated soundscapes of shoegaze, Roads to Judah is deeply personal.

1. Kurt vile, Smoke Ring for My Halo With Smoke Ring for My Halo, Kurt Vile shot into the mainstream with his laid-back bluesrock and catchy tunes. On an album that hardly has a bad track, the songs ‘Society is My Friend’, ‘In My Time’, and ‘Jesus Fever’ showcased the Philly native’s impressive songwriting and guitarpicking ability.
1. Bon iver, Bon Iver Bon Iver’s follow-up to their gem For Emma, Forever Ago features new approaches on the part of the now well-known American indie band. Justin Vernon ventures into dreamy territory over the course of 10 tracks named after places that have been inspiring to the band – the end result being a beautifully crafted masterpiece.
1. antlers, Burst Apart With a gentle falsetto set to their moving melodies, Antlers have produced one of the year’s best thought-through albums. Whimsical and melancholic, it beats both Beach House and Wild Beasts to the title of indie dream-pop band by a mile.
2. anthrax, Worship Music This album was not supposed to be good. The thrash metal titans have made an unexpected but triumphant return with their first album in eight years. As Joey Belladonna’s first record behind the mic since 1991, Worship Music is the thrash comeback that fans have been waiting for since their heroes reached legendary status.
2. Portugal. The man, In the Mountain in the Cloud With ITMITC, Portugal. The Man nearly managed to one-up their 2009 masterpiece The Satanic Satanist. Full of pyschedelic beauty and poignant lyricism, ITMITC is an album that almost demands being played all the way through. While it may not be the band’s best album, it came awfully close. And that is saying a lot.
3. Taake, Noregs Vaapen Norway’s Taake are veterans of genre-bending black metal, and Noregs Vaapen is a solid addition to their canon of outside-thebox thinking. By fusing traditional black metal with rock ‘n’ roll, guitar solos, and even some flashy banjo, Taake keeps not only their sound relevant, but the genre as well.
3. russian circles, Empros Leading up to the release of Empros, the Chicago-based instrumental trio’s fourth album, the band promised it would be their heaviest yet. And while they certainly turned up the rock, the album still features soft atmospheric moments that help to set off the harsher, hardcharging sound.
4. Krallice, Diotima On the back of their now three albums, Krallice stand as one of the leading members in the American black metal scene, and Diotima re-establishes this. Krallice pays homage to the black metal template of their Norwegian genre forefathers, but they add a technical approach to their bleak ten-minute songs that is overwhelming yet addictive.
4. my morning Jacket, Circuital After the mixed bag that was 2008‘s Evil Urges, My Morning Jacket returned to its Southern jam-rock sound on Circuital. Though not a terrific album all the way through, the album’s two opening and two closing tracks are among the best the band have done.
5. animals as Leaders, Weightless Having taken the internet metal world by storm with the release of their self-titled first record, Animals as Leaders’ sophomore LP was one of the most anticipated records of the year. By expanding upon the instrumental shredding of their first album, this trio of virtuosos did not disappoint. Best of the rest: 6. Trap Them, Darker Handcraft 7. Ulcerate, The Destroyers of All 8. Fuck the Facts, Die Miserable 9. Boris, New Album 10. Panopticon, Social Disservices
5. The Black Keys, El Camino This December release from the Ohio blues-rock duo snuck its way into the top five at the last minute, edging out other worthy contenders. Having hooked back up with super producer Danger Mouse, The Black Keys’ newest release sounds significantly different from last year’s successful Brothers, but in a very good way. Best of the rest: 6. Wilco, The Whole Love 7. Feist, Metals 8. Puscifer, Conditions of My Parole 9. Mogwai, Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will 10. Mastodon, The Hunter
2. charles Bradley, No Time for Dreaming The tale of Charles Bradley is a Cinderella story unlike any other, best told through the endearing, emotional No Time For Dreaming. This is an album that cements the 62-year-old ‘Screaming Eagle of Soul’ into the hallmarks of soul folklore, alongside the likes of Otis Redding, Curtis Mayfield and James Brown himself. 3. Björk, Biophilia Björk fan or not, one would be hard-pressed to contest the assertion that her eighth studio album may well be one of the most innovative musical creations of our time. With dimension, flair and surprise, this is an album that’ll be around for a long time to come. 4. Yann Tiersen, Skyline Known mostly as the genius behind film scores such as ‘Amelie Poulin’ and ‘Goodbye Lenin’, Yann Tiersen’s latest album is yet another poetic, dimension-defying patchwork of varied musical arrangements and influences that showcase the musical arsenal of one of the most talented musicians for miles around.
5. adele, 21 Adele stormed into 2011 with an album that has taken accolades far and wide. Something of a confessional, diary-like thematic rendition made in the aftermath of a split from an unnamed partner, 21 is truly an album that almost everyone can relate to on some level or other. Best of the rest: 6. PJ Harvey, Let England Shake 7. Beirut, The Rip Tide 8. Ben Harper, Give Till It’s Gone 9. Radiohead, King of Limbs 10. Nicolas Jaar, Space is Only Noise
2. m82, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming Led by the anthemic ‘Midnight City’, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming pulses with a euphoria you thought you’d lost with your milk teeth, but is grown up enough to put on quietly in the background while you have a beer with a girl you like.
3. Hyetal, Broadcast 2011 was the year dubstep got boring. But Hyetal somehow managed to do something different. With an emphasis on treble and melody, instead of the standard wobbly bass, Hyetal produced a masterful work of electronica, best illustrated in the magnificent ‘Phoenix’.
4. Kate Bush, 50 Words for Snow Kate Bush seems to exist in a world of her own. 50 Words For Snow was released this November and is solely about, you guessed it, snow. But this was no Christmas album. Instead, she created a magical and soulwarming investigation of winter in a way that only Bush could. 5. college, A Real Hero (EP) ‘Drive’ was this year’s hottest movie thanks in no small part to the soundtrack by College. Mimicking a simple, synthy, 80s style electro, it’s hopeful and sentimental and dreamy and druggy. Perfect. Best of the rest: 6. SBTRKT, SBTRKT 7. Com Truise, Cyanide Sisters 8. PJ Harvey, Let England Shake 9. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Belong 10. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, S/T

Underneath it all WHETHER it’s the last shopping day of Christmas, or something just to brighten up New Year, here are four lifesavers in the lingerie department to get 2012 off to a splendid start. Lust Mikkel Bryggers Gade 3, 1460 Cph K; open Mon-Thu 11:00-19:00, Fri 11:0020:00, Sat 11:00-18:00; 3333 0110; www. lustuniverse.com Lust first opened as a boutique dedicated to helping women explore their sexuality. Today the shop has three floors, and the toys, outfits and props become more daring as the customer descends. The first level contains books and gifts - some of which could appear on almost any coffee table the second lingerie (mostly of the racy variety), and the third level battery-operated merchandise ranging in price from 3001,300kr. The female staff are all prepared to answer questions and assist in finding the right products. Agent Provocateur Pilestræde 6, 1106 Cph K; open MonThu 10:00-18:00, Fri 10:00-19:00, Sat 10:00-16:00; 3391 9931; www.agentprovocateur.com This British brand of the stars started in 1994, offering a whole range of upscale lingerie, including classic silk pyjamas, sparkly heart-shaped pasties, corsets with zippers in unmentionable places, black silk leopardprint bed linen, garter belts and stockings in lux fabrics, and kimono-style robes in several lengths and shapes, which are popular winter accessories for those who lounge - all at prices ranging from 600-2,300kr.

Tekinoktay Silkegade 13, 1113 Cph K; open MonTue 11:00-18:00, Fri 11:00-19:00, Sat 10:00-16:00; 3391 6011; see Facebook Founded in 2003 by the visual artist Evan Tekinoktay, who applies her attention to detail and craftsmanship to all her selections (and the posters and graphics), the shop has a charming old-but-new aesthetic - an atmosphere that combines boudoir lighting with 1970s colour palettes and old-school Berlin cool. The full disclosure is that I would buy every piece of lingerie here for myself if I could afford it. The stock of sweet nothings that the shop carries has each received personal attention and the prices of the bras, tops, jewellery and sets reflect that care. Bedtime.dk Puggaardsgade 3 cellar, 1573 Cph V; 2281 2011; www.bedtime.dk Bedtime, previously a shop on Fiolstræde aimed at couples in their 30s-50s looking for a discrete shopping experience away from Vesterbro, changed hands in February to go exclusively online. Products range from lingerie and oils, to toys and DVDs, from the relatively light to the quite explicit. While online, the staff of Bedtime are available for questions by phone or email with responses guaranteed within 24 hours.

DID YOU KNOW that the world’s largest single firework was set off at a festival in Japan in 1988? The shell weighed over half a tonne and the burst was over a kilometre wide! Keen to learn more? Then head to the fireworks festival at the Experimentarium where they aim to educate, entertain and give the audience a bang of a good time this December. Now in its 21st year, the festival is becoming something of a great tradition … much like fireworks on New Year’s Eve. The Experimentarium’s very own ‘fireworks master ’Kristoffer Bredahl will hold six exciting indoor shows over three days. Amid the smoke, colours and loud bangs, Bredahl will explain the fascinating chemistry behind these historic and celebrated creations. He promises that it’s always a captivating show as it “combines stunning aesthetics with hard core science”. This is also Bredahl’s sixth year. With a background in physics and chemistry, he dissects the fireworks and explains (in Danish) each different component. He’ll provide the answers to questions such as how does gunpowder get its black colour, where do the sparkles come from, and how do you get the firework up in the air. While it’s a show for everyone, “it’s usually the dads with their two boys that enjoy it the most,” Bredahl said. “There’s something about fireworks that appeals to them as they are both

Vesterbrogade 3, 1630 Cph V; until 30 Dec; www.tivoli.dk This year Tivoli has created an amazing Russian theme, recreating a 2,000 sqm Russian city, complete with a version of St Basil’s Cathedral. Children can go on a Babushka doll treasure hunt to win a prize or visit Father Christmas and Rudolf the Reindeer. The programme of events includes the Tivoli illuminations, Christmas parades, The Nutcracker, the DR Ramasjang Christmas concert, and the Skt. Lucia parade. SA Louisiana Børnehus Christmas workshops Gl Strandvej 13, 3050 Humlebaek; open until 30 Dec; www. louisiana.dk The Louisiana children’s wing is a wonderful space where children can be creative, express themselves and make as much mess as they like - which is handy as this December they can make gingerbread. They can also make Christmas ornaments and masks, create clay figures, or take a guided tour of the exhibits. MA
There can never be too many fireworks (are you insane?)
beautiful and dangerous much like racing cars. Fireworks have this mysterious quality to them that bewilders people when they see so much power coming from a rolled up piece of cardboard.” A big aim of the show is to push the safety messages around how fireworks should be handled. “Every year there continues to be a lot of accidents relating to fireworks around the New Year period,” said Experimentarium marketing co-ordinator Maria Holst Mouritzen. “If we can teach children from a young age how to treat fireworks with respect then hopefully we can help prevent unnecessary injuries.” From Bredahl’s point of view it’s the parents that are most in need of a safety message reminder. “People in the 3040 age group have often forgotten how dangerous fireworks can be. I don’t tell them anything they don’t already know, but merely remind them to wear goggles and not to return to the firework if it doesn’t go off.” He wants people to remember that fireworks are and will al-
ways be unpredictable, no matter how many years experience you have with them. One of Bredahl’s big focuses this year is to dispel the myth that dousing fireworks with water will render them dead. “Fireworks and water are a dangerous combination; water can actually ignite a firework and increase the flames on an already lit one. As part of my show I pour water on a firework and let the audience see for themselves the havoc it can wreak.” An explosively beautiful experience, this year’s fireworks festival isn’t one to be missed. From young to old, everyone can discover something more about these mysterious, bright and banging explosions that we all love so much. As Mouritzen said: “No matter what age you are there is a fascination with fireworks that everyone has.” So come and satisfy your curiosity at this year’s fireworks festival!

FOOD & DRINK
InOut | THE CPH POST ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE FOOD BLOG
BY SIMON COOPER
SOME THINGS you just know, instinctively, are going to tick the right boxes. No more so than in food, and classic flavour combinations – and particularly in soups. The playground of the frugal, the mass caterer and the adventurous, soups strike the heart of those who eat them, as well as the very idea of comfort food. I came across this onion and mustard soup recipe online and, like all keen cooks, decided to tweak it with the addition of beer and stock. It’s absolutely ideal for this time of year, easy to make and is an absolute winner at any dinner party.
It also gives off a scent when cooking that transports you to an armchair in a low-beamed, country pub with a roaring fireplace and the prospect of a soulwarming dinner. There are no secrets to getting this spot on. Obviously the balance of mustard and beer is down to individual taste, but a 330ml bottle of good stout and a heaped tablespoon of grain mustard should do the trick. But above all, never forget how easy it is to make a soup. It really is just a matter of bunging whatever’s handy into a pot and boiling for 20-30 minutes. Liquidise and the result is healthy and homemade, and cheaper than chips.

Tucked away behind a hard to-find-door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS Reinwald’s Farvergade 15, 1463 Cph K; open Mon-Sat 14:00-24:00 (kitchen closes at 22:00); 3391 8289; www.reinwalds. dk; five-course menu with wine 850kr, other dishes 75215kr Serving lunch and dinner, a director’s-script length of choices confronts you at Reinwald’s. It’s a who’s who of classic French and French-inspired Danish dishes as well as a monthly set menu. Any chef would be proud of this. SC
BioMio Halmtorvet 19, 1700 Cph V; open daily 12:00-24:00 (later Fri and Sat), kitchen open 12:00-22:00; 3331 2000; starters 75kr, mains 135kr; www. biomio.dk Located in an old warehouse next to trendy Kødbyen, Bio Mio is certainly unusual for conservative Copenhagen. It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that you don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that you can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. JH SushiTreat Fox Jarmers Plads 3, Cph V; open Mon-Thu 16:30-22:00, Fri-Sat 16:30-24:00 with Club Treat from 22:00-02:00; 3338 7030 The newly-opened restaurant SushiTreat at the Hotel Fox serves the best California-style sushi in the city, offers an impressive drinks and wine card, and has a completely unique atmosphere on Friday and Saturday nights when you can order sushi until 2am while listening to some of the city’s best DJs . Onion, beer and mustard soup Makes enough soup for 4-6 people
6/7 large onions 2 small potatoes Some vegetable or beef stock 1 tbsp grain mustard 1 bottle good, dark beer (Royal Red is a good starting point, but it’s worth paying extra for a good quality, micro-brewery number) butter olive oil salt pepper Start by cooking the potatoes in a separate pan of water. Whist this is happening, melt a knob of butter with a couple of tablespoons of olive oil in a large pan, before adding the roughly chopped onion. If your stock is from a bouillon cube then boil some water and make it at this point.
Oysters & Grill Sjællandsgade 1B, 2200 Copenhagen N; open Mon-Sat 17:30-24:00, Sun 12:00-21:00; oysters cost 15-35kr each, main courses cost 135-185kr; 7020 6171; www.cofoco.dk Oysters & Grill is not rocket science, yet it give diners in Copenhagen access to fresh and delicious food at reasonable prices with an emphasis on seafood, fish and meats, which are prepared simply and flavourfully. NA Thai Flavours Vesterbrogade 30, Cph V; open Sun-Thu 12:00-23:00, Fri-Sat 12:00-23:30; Starters 60kr, mains 100kr; 3331 3170, thaiflavours30@gmail.com; www.thaiflavours.dk A worthy exponent of the Thai kitchen has opened recently in Vesterbro, just one block from the Planetarium and the lakes. The utterly unpretentious yet stylish Thai Flavours has a hospitable and authentic atmosphere and walls that let you breathe. KRG Saga Queen Havnegade 31, Cph K (near Nyhavn); sails twice Thu-Sat at 13:00 (lunch ) & 19:00 (dinner); reservations 4675 6460 & info@sagaqueen.dk; www. sagaqueen.dk The city’s only restaurant cruise ship, the Saga Queen offers a two-hour lunch cruise and a three-hour dinner cruise. Every table has a wonderful window view, and there’s a choice of set menus. Sometimes a meal can feel like an eternity, but here the time passed by quickly and pleasurably as we enjoyed a feast for both our eyes and our very satisfied stomachs. JC Brasserie Degas Trommesalen 5, Cph V; 3322 2826; see www.brasseriedegas.dk for more info If you like macarons, this is the place to get them. The brasserie also serves main courses like fried duck breast with wild mushrooms. TDF

Ideally you’d have real beef stock from bones, but the bouillon cube option is absolutely fine. The same is true for other homemade soups you might rustle up on the spur of the moment using the contents of what’s handy in your fridge - always have a batch of vegetable and chicken stock cubes for such an eventuality. Season the onions and cook on a medium heat for 20 minutes, and then add a few splashes of beer along the way. After 20 minutes, add the stock, a generous tablespoon of mustard and the rest of the beer. Also put in the cooked potatoes. Turn down the heat to medium-low and let simmer for another 30 minutes. Stick the whole thing in the blender and turn into a liquid. Have a quick taste and address any imbalances in seasoning, mustard or beer levels.

Saxo Cafe Colbjørnsensgade 11, 1652 Cph V; open 11:00-23:00; 3888 8288, www.saxocafe.dk; Chinese buffet 128kr pp, dim sum dishes from 35kr Saxo’s menu is an eclectic and comforting mix of cultures, incorporating Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese buffets, Dim Sum and Vietnamese menus, and traditional Danish fare. With such a wide choice, it’s a great place to go as a group who can’t agree on a choice of cuisine. On our visit our favourites were the Dum Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. AK Gold Prag Gothersgade 39, 1123 Cph K; open Tue-Wed 17:00-23:30; Thu-Sat 17:00-24:00; SunMon closed; appetisers from 19Kr, mains from 89kr; 3391 4712, www.goldprag.dk Gold Prag has a distinct Austrian, Hungarian, Czech and Polish heritage and lives in a time of its own. The main courses are substantial, honestly cooked and rich in taste and include Vienna schnitzel with baked new potatoes and coleslaw and chicken breast topped with apricots and cheese. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. SC Restaurant Dalaman Vodroffsvej 15, Frederiksberg C; Open daily 16:0024:00; 3322 1231 www.dalaman.dk; three-course menus 119kr, 139kr & 159kr pp Turkish restaurant Dalaman puts an emphasis on good food and customer satisfaction. AK Kennedy’s Irish Bar Gammel Kongevej 23, 1610 Cph V; Open Mon-Sun 12:0002:00 It’s not an Irish pub. Instead it’s a pub owned by Irishmen, and there’s a big difference. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits. Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH

BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. BH The Old English Pub Vesterbrogade 2B, 1620 Cph V; Open Sun-Thu 11:30-02:30, Fri-Sat 11:30-04:30; 3332 1921; www.oldenglishpub.dk This Victorian style English pub has all the class and authenticity of a Cotswolds country pub not a Costa del Sol flea trap. Facing Tivoli’s arches and just a stone’s throw from Strøget, it’s the ideal pit-stop on a tour of the city centre LB

your preferred style of sauce, standard American sides like chilli fries and onion rings (45kr each), and the accompanying vegetables (also 45kr each). My dining partner and I opted to share the creamy spinach and thickly cut onion rings, both finely prepared. Do not fret if you don’t eat beef – MASH also serves French corn-fed chicken, fish, and lobster while vegetarians can opt for an abundance of delectable vegetables and sides. The choices for steaks included selections of Danish dry-aged cuts as well as American and Canadian selections. A big

SUNDAY BRUNCH
FORGET THE American television series from the 1970s and everybody’s most popular way of eating potatoes. The most recent ‘MASH’ is the Modern American Steakhouse, a sophisticated American style restaurant with a twist of Danish informal dining. Run by the same promising trio who are behind the Japanese-inspired restaurant Umami and French eatery Le Sommelier, MASH offers what may be the best steaks in town. With a central location, MASH sees many tourists and internationals as well as prominent Danes. A red flesh colour dominates the room upon entering MASH Steakhouse, rising to meet the butcher shop-style white tiled high ceilings. Deep red leather booths fill the large dining area in a classic yet stylish American diner fashion. To top it off, several different cuts of meat hang on display in decorative coolers, setting the proper scene for the ultimate steak experience. Assistant manager Mette Mynderup told InOut that owner Jesper Boelskifte wanted MASH to be an overarching concept – with high quality food served in an authentic slaughterhouse atmosphere, inspired by the great steakhouses of New York. Together with fellow sommelier Erik Gemal and head chef Francis Cardenau, Boelskifte has successfully done just that. Upon arriving, friendly staff members took our coats and immediately showed us to our table. For a Sunday evening, the restaurant was filled with a mix of large groups, couples and a family celebrating a youngster’s birthday, adorning the table with Danish flags. After getting comfortable in our oversized booth, a waiter came for our drink orders and to offer his advice about the menu. Little did we know that when we came for a dinner, we would also be treated to an introductory lesson to different types of steaks and how they are prepared - right down to how the cattle is fed in order to ensure the highest quality taste of the meat. After Steak 101 ended and all of our questions were answered, my cohort and I opted to start the meal by sharing the scallop chowder that arrived piping hot and in a timely fashion. While the dish may be a bit small for two people, the amount of food that arrived for us later made up for the small portion early on – and the warm soup was spot on to pair with a chilly December evening. Moments before the main course arrived, our starters were placed in front of us. The option to mix-and-match the side dishes allows guests to creatively piece together their perfect meal. You can choose
steak for a small girl, the 400 grams of meat were the darkest shade of brown on the outside and light pink on the inside. When cut, the steak oozed fragrant juices that blended finely with the rich and bold bearnaise sauce I smothered the meat in. Bursting with flavour, especially towards the fatty bits, the steak excelled in taste. Served on a plain white cafeteria-style plate, the understated presentation didn’t mean a lack in quality. With an entire basement floor largely in part dedicated to a wine cellar, there is an abundance of wines for diners to pair
with their meals. Staying true to the North American theme, the extensive wine list includes many options from that region – not just California but also other areas in North and South America like Chile. As a final word of advice, make sure you save room for dessert. This time around, my dining partner and I chose not to share and each ordered a slice of cheesecake with strawberry and sorbet – one of the best decisions of the night as it was smooth, creamy and absolutely delicious.

Exciting, but its Swedish setting is a distraction KASPER GULDBERG
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (15) Dir: David Fincher; US thriller, 2011, 158 mins; Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer, Robin Wright, Yorick van Wageningen, Stellan Skarsgard
Premiered December 21
T
he fact that you’re about to read a review of an American remake of a Swedish thriller based on a Swedish novel is a testimony to the undeniable attraction and power of this crime saga, aka The Millennium trilogy. Everyone who has seen Stieg Larsson’s novels about ‘the girl who played with fire’ hit the world’s bookstores after conquering Scandinavia in 2006 will know that I’m describing a full-blown literary phenomenon. Its adaptation by filmmakers promises to be comparable to those of James Bond and Harry Potter. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the first in the trilogy and the first of three to be directed by Fincher. The director of Fight Club, Se7en, and most recently The Social Network obviously knows his metier but something about this one jars. Whether it’s the fact that all of Stockholm unaccountably speaks English, or that his version has grown up in the shadow of its model – an excellent work – is hard to say. Possibly both. To be sure, holding a candle to Noomi Rapace’s lead performance as Lisbeth Salander was never going to be easy (not surprisingly, Rapace is currently undergoing Hollywood beta-testing in Sherlock Holmes 2). Rooney Mara (The Social Network) does her best, gets close to jawdropping in glimpses, but is mostly closer to simply outrageous. Her mock Swedish cadence distracts more than it convinces Salander, however, is not introduced
“How does it feel being the most muscular looking journalist in history? Can you confirm the rumours that you’re now editor of Bodybuilding Monthly?” until our other main character, the financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist (a wooden Craig), has been offered a healthy stipend for an eerie job: to solve the presumed murder of a teenage girl, Harriet, who went missing decades before during a family celebration. It’s Harriet’s ageing uncle, a wealthy industrialist Henrik Vanger (Plummer), who can’t stand not knowing her fate anymore. He still lives on the family-owned island from which Harriet disappeared one day while the bridge was blocked by an auto-accident. Blomkvist is basically faced with a ‘locked room mystery’. He is persuaded
to relocate to the scene of the crime that he must share with Henrik’s notoriously suspicious brothers. As Henrik tells him: “You will be investigating thieves, misers, bullies - the most detestable collection of people that you will ever meet: my family.” He doesn’t mention their Nazi and sado-misogynist tendencies. Isolated in a draughty cabin sans phone connection with the cold wind howling outside, Blomkvist decides he needs a research assistant. A lawyer suggests Salander, a very unconventional sleuth, pierced and tattooed to Gothic perfection, who investigates people via
her laptop. The girl’s a hacker from hell. She’s also well-endowed with various autistic qualities and, being a victim of sexual abuse, a part-time feminist avenger too. Once reopened by this unusual duo, the stone-cold case starts to give, and various very unsettling truths seem to lurk around every corner. Verses from Leviticus – who memorises those anymore? – are reflected in the goriest police photos (“It’s better to look at what I’m about to show you on an empty stomach.”). It’s all as darkly postmodern, R-rated and noir as imaginable.
You’ll get the thrills you pay for but my feeling is there’s something inalienably Swedish about the franchise that is not developed very gracefully here. Relying on the original screenplay (as I see it), screenwriter Steven Zaillian (Schindler’s List) has produced a passable script but no character dazzles rhetorically – or steals the show otherwise, really. Although not destined to become a modern classic, this will no doubt excite many. You don’t need me to explain the attraction of Larsson’s morbidity – but you may need Sigmund Freud.
Sound sequel but nothing special my dear Holmes Sherlock Holms: A Game of Shadows Dir. Guy Ritchie. US action, 2011, 129 mins; Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, Noomi Rapace, Jared Harris, Kelly Reilly, Stephen Fry
Premieres December 25
I
T’S MY LAST review of 2011 and wouldn’t you know it, it’s been one of the hardest to put into words. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows is not a good movie but yet very entertaining. It has many good things, but they simply don’t add up.
Set in 1891, Europe is in chaos as a rash of assassinations and bombings threaten to take France and Germany into war. Sherlock Holmes (Downey Jr) is convinced that the growing unrest has been orchestrated by the ‘Napoleon of crime’, Professor James Moriarty (Harris). But by dedicating himself to the defeat of his arch-enemy, Holmes has not only put himself in danger but also his friends. Not only does his girlfriend-rival Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams in a short cameo) suffer at Moriarty’s hands, but Dr Watson (Law) and his new wife Mary (Reilly) become targets. In the process of struggling to keep his friends safe, Holmes must recruit a gypsy woman (Rapace) and en-
list the aid of his politically connected brother Mycroft (Fry), and unravel a mystery that could have earth-shattering ramifications. Downey Jr brings exuberance to the character, but sometimes should have been reined in a bit by his director. And Ritchie gives you what you expect: lots of action, fight scenes and raw adrenaline chopped up and slowed down depending upon his mood on the day he was editing. He also has an excellent ear for soundtrack and the sets of old world London and Paris are very, very good. Downey Jr and Law continue to have such an easy way between them, but, while there was a simmering undercurrent
of bromance in the first movie, this second one feels a bit more forced than the original. Ritchie does his best to once again linger just long enough on those things important to Holmes in cracking the case (and for those a little slower, it is all pieced together for you near the end of the film). It’s simply a matter of whether we the viewer can spot these things and put it all together at the speed that Holmes does! And yet, with all these positives, I can’t seem to be able to offer more than a middling grade. There just isn’t anything to really bring it all together, but you’ll still have fun with this one. Money Ball (3)
Dir: Bennett Miller; US drama, 2011, 133 mins; Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Robin Wright, Chris Pratt, Steven Bishop and Phillip Seymour Hoffman Moneyball is a baseball movie first and a drama about the underdog second. It isn’t really a movie about what happens on the field, it’s about what happens behind it, around it and off it as Beane tries to make his vision a reality. With a ‘home run’ performance from Pitt, Moneyball is his potential award winner of 2011. KE

Dir: Nicolas Winding Refn; US thriller, 2011; 95 mins; Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan Refn manages to build extraordinary tension before igniting brief outbursts of violence. Sheer brilliance! KE
Avoid like the Plague Another Happy Day
Dir: Sam Levinson; US drama, 2011, 119 mins; Ellen Barkin, Ezra Miller, Ellen Burstyn Another Happy Day combines some of the stock elements of a family film with an honesty and viciousness that brings it up a notch, but only just. EM
In Time (11)
Dir: Andrew Niccol; 2011; 109 mins; Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried As one reviewer said “In Time fills its dynamic, sprawling universe with about as much character and drama as a halfhour game of Sim City.” EM
Larry Crowne (3)

Director: Ben Wheatley The film’s greatest weakness is that it appears to have dropped off the cinematic ugly tree and hit most branches during the fall. Hardtalk with Rene Redzepi BBC World, Jan 3, 21:30
HARDTALK (BBC World, 21:30 unless stated) has always been good value for money, but unfortunately the Beeb rarely gives us advance warning of who’s appearing. However, this Xmas, it’s made an exception, giving us a head’s up on six of its shows, revealing that its guest on January 3 is none other than Noma’s enfant terrible, Rene Redzepi. Let’s see if he gives as good as he gets – a question punters have been asking about his restaurant for many a year. Other guests include euthanasia proponents Tony and Jane Nicklinson (Tue), There’s something about Kevin author Lionel Shriver (Wed), a review of the best bits on Hardtalk (Thu), Guns and Roses bassist Duff McKagan (Dec 30, 15:30), and the voice of Darth Vader, James Earl Jones (Jan 2).
From hard talk to hard-talking bitch, the editor-in-chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour, the subject of The September Issue (SV2, Mon 22:00) and possible inspiration for the Meryl Streep character in The Devil Wears Prada. Anyhow, despite a cinematic relief, you can’t help thinking the director was merely going through the motions. Mildred Pierce (SV2, Mon 20:00) is pretty dull as well. As far as I could see, the first episode was about a housewife short of cash who gets a job in a diner – and that was it, although she was played by Kate Winslet. Based on a James W Cain novel (never seen the appeal, but there’s always the guarantee of murder), it’s an award winner with a 69 on Metacritic but we defy you not to fall asleep.
Two other period dramas making their debuts are detective yarn The Suspicions of Mr Whicher (SV1, Dec 31, 21:00) with Paddy Considine, and private girls school miniseries South Riding with David Morrissey. Elsewhere, these docs speak for themselves: Charlie Sheen - Bad Boy On The Edge (DR HD, Jan BBC World, Jan 3, 21:30 Hardtalk with Rene Redzepi 2, 18:05), The doctor who killed Michael Jackson (DR1, Jan 4, 23:25), Crimes that shook Britain: Hungerford (DR2, Jan 2, 23:00) and Marc Bolan - The Final Word (DR2, Jan 31, 21:55); there’s an unwelcome return for Absolutely Fabulous (SV1, Mon 22:00); and Alan Carr: Tooth Fairy (BBC Ent, Jan 5, 22:00) is silly but actually quite funny – go on, give him a chance, it’s Xmas.
