STUDENT SUCCESS STORIES The success of our CPGE students in all of our programs is very important to us. From winning prestigious awards to growing in their professional careers outside of academia we strive to support our students in following their careers and passions.

A few highlights from our students:

Irma Villanueva

Master of Science in International Apparel Management She won the 2021-2022 John E. Andrews Graduate Student Leader of the Year for her contributions as a scholar through writing, communication, and diversified research experiences. She also won first place for “Best Graduate Project” at the Cal Poly Pomona Library Research Awards.

STUDENT SERVED Cal Poly Pomona’s College of Professional and Global Education is a dynamic and responsive enterprise that designs and delivers a wide variety of educational programs to its many constituencies. We are focused on serving students beyond the borders of our campus and/ or outside of regular schedules, especially to anyone who wants to increase their current job skills, explore a new career path, or enhance their life with new knowledge. We accomplish this goal through a variety of professional development certificate programs, online courses and advanced degrees.

CPGE offers programs for a broad array of constituencies ranging from English language learners to graduate student; from military veterans to middle school students of migrant worker families; from CPP students desiring to study internationally to international students desiring to study at CPP, and many others.

MIGRANT EDUCATION Through the Migrant Education program at CPGE students from various migrant education regions across California attend the one-week, residential program at CPP. The program focuses primarily on applied mathematics, engineering, robotics, and coding, with a special module on college readiness, career exploration and resources provided by the university to ensure student success.

The majority of the summer term consists of self-support courses through CPGE. CPGE led the marketing efforts for the 2022 summer session at Cal Poly Pomona offering an opportunity for students to stay on track for graduation and in support of the campus GI 2025 goals.

GLOBAL CAMPUS RECAP International Institutional Partnership International institutional partnership building plays a pivotal role in cooperation and exchange with international partners. During 2021-2022, Global Education Institute (GEI) established 10 new and renewed 2 existing international institutional partnerships for CPP in China, Ecuador, Japan, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Ukraine.

INTERNATIONAL CENTER AND STUDY ABROAD ANNUAL REPORT: 2021-22 The Office of Study Abroad worked tirelessly to safeguard the well-being of faculty, and students abroad during the COVID-19 pandemic, following the guidance of the CSU Chancellors Office, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of State, and CPP’s Office of Risk Management.

International Professional Training (IPT) In June 2022, GEI successfully delivered a 3-week professional development training program (called International Professional Training/IPT) on campus for 14 faculty members from Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi (RMUTT) in Thailand.

Student Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Leadership Program (SIELP) During 2021-2022, GEI successfully delivered 10 online cohorts of SIELP to 478 internationals students from seven partner universities in China. SIELP has also engaged 25 CPP faculty members from six academic colleges, 20+ CPP students, and seven industry experts during the implementation of the program.

Customized International Programs During 2021-2022, GEI successfully delivered an online Navigation Technology and Marine Engineering Program for 80 students from Jiangsu Maritime Institute, China, in collaboration with California Maritime Academy.

103 Major Project Completed • Developed a new mandatory Online US Immigration Workshop for newly admitted F-1 international students. 251 new/transfer students completed the module.

• Redesigned and launched ISSO website providing comprehensive immigration resources for CPP students, faculty, and advisors • Designed and launched fully Online F1 Immigration Workshop to our onboarding process.

• Partnered with IT and Enrollment Management on a year-long project to identify and eliminate duplicate and incorrect F-1 student data in PeopleSoft that had been causing significant reporting errors within the SEVIS batching process.

OPEN HOUSE To celebrate the official name change from College of the Extended University to College of Professional and Global Education, the college hosted an open house event. Guests included President Coley and Provost Brown as well as faculty, staff, community and university stakeholders.

NAME CHANGE College of Extended University officially changed its name to College of Professional and Global Education or CPGE for short. This became official after President Soraya Coley signed the official document on March 24, 2022.

The project began in August 2020 and was spearheaded by Dean Rolland who was serving as the interim dean for the college. Dean Rolland arranged a team of community and university stakeholders to come together and brainstorm what the purpose of the college was and its importance for both the university as well as the community. After many brainstorming meetings, the result was a vision map (pictured above), which is essentially a map that illustrates the many purposes of the college. Such purposes include specialized programs for students to continue their education, programs for international students, study abroad programs and specialized master’s degrees to help future students reach their career goals and pursue their passions.

With its new tag line Supporting Your Career and Passion, CPGE is committed to serving its purpose with the new name.

During our Open House event we presented an award to David Sibbet and Gisela Wendling from The Grove Consultants International, and thanked them for their contribution for our name change. We also presented a gift to Dean Erik Rolland who spearheaded and lead the name change process.

TRIBUTE TO DEAN ROLLAND The College of Professional and Global Education (CPGE), would like to thank Dr. Erik Rolland for his impactful leadership and vision, that guided our college to our new name.

Dean Rolland came in August 2020 as Interim Dean for our college and lead a team of staff, partners and stakeholders in the development of a new vision, purpose and pathway for our college. Over the next 12-18 months, the think tank collaborated and reached a mutually agreed upon decision to rename our college, which was officially approved by President Soraya M. Coley on March 24, 2022.

We extend a heartfelt thanks and appreciation for his work and leadership over these past two years, and we wish him continued success as he embarks on his new journey.

WELCOME DEAN NAVARRO

UPGRADED TECHNOLOGY As faculty, staff and students began to re-transition back, the College of Professional and Global Education upgraded a few technology systems to improve efficiency.

Destiny One, a new student management system to be used for Open University and Professional Development Programs

EMSI, a Labor Market Analytics System used to allow the college to analyze program offerings and learn about up-to-date workforce needs

Terra Dotta, a global engagement platform which will help facilitate cross-cultural learning experiences

At CPGE we continously strive to keep up with the latest techonology which will allow us to be more efficient and better serve our students, partners, and community.

We are happy to announce that Dr. Richard Navarro has agreed to serve as the interim dean of the College of Professional and Global Education for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Dr. Navarro joins us at CPGE after previously serving as a professor of education and the college graduate coordinator in the College of Education and Integrative Studies. Dr. Navarro is also the Cal Poly Pomona representative and Chair of the CSU Academic Council on International Programs and recently served as Chief of Party of the USAID Project for Productivity through Higher Education in El Salvador. Dr. Richard Navarro brings extensive international and higher education leadership experience to this interim post. From 1997 to 2003, he served as the Dean of the College of Education and Integrative Studies at Cal Poly Pomona. We are excited to be working with him during his interim term at our college and would like to give him a warm welcome.
