GRANDE COLONIAL LA JOLLA

A Landmark of History and Tradition.

18
HISTORY
The Grande Colonial celebrated its grand opening in 1913.
Throughout its history, the hotel has gone through several changes, owners, and names. But it has always been regarded as a cornerstone of the La Jolla community.

A COMMUNITY CORNERSTONE

La Jolla’s Grande Colonial Hotel is the seaside town’s oldest original hotel. The Colonial Apartments and Hotel, as it was known when it opened on February 1st, 1913, was the talk of the town and a foundation for the community. The original white, woodframed Colonial Apartments and Hotel, designed by Richard Requa who was the master architect of the California Exposition in Balboa Park, was described as, “a perfectly appointed apartment hotel, with the fnest sun parlor and lobby overlooking the ocean on the Pacifc coast.”

George Bane, who became the sole owner of the Colonial in 1920, realized the tourist potential of this picturesque seaside town and decided to give the Colonial a whole new look. In 1925, he commissioned architect Frank Stevenson to design a hotel that would “rival anything in the West.” It was a huge undertaking. The existing building was moved to the rear of the property and a new, four-story, concrete, mixed-use building was erected in its place. Completed in 1928 and boasting 28 apartments and 25 single hotel rooms, the new Colonial Hotel had the frst sprinkler system west of the Mississippi; solid, unsupported, reinforced cement stairways and fre doors that still exist in the structure.

Even with its safety features, the Colonial was breathtaking. The “sunburst” design of windows and semi-circle domes of leaded glass above the French doors uniquely captured the sunlight and drew it into the hotel. Inside, the new interior included colonial freplaces with marble hearths, ornate chandeliers, and richly colored sofas and chairs. Rooms were available for $25 to $50 per month. Bane said of the new Grande Colonial, “I’ve always had confdence in La Jolla, and I still do. This building is the concrete expression of my faith.”

A GATHERING PLACE FOR LOCALS, HOLLYWOOD STARS, AND THE MILITARY

After opening the new Colonial, Bane had leased the entire property to a “Hollywood man” named W. S. Beard. Unhappy with the way Beard was running things, Bane reorganized the business in 1931, and R.C. Bugler was brought in as the manager. One year later, a more solid fnancial plan was drawn up for the hotel and the rest of La Jolla grew up around this community cornerstone.

THE ORIGINAL LA JOLLA DRUGSTORE

The La Jolla Drugstore, next door to the Colonial, was soon woven into its history. In 1926, the store was purchased by Kansas native Silas O. Putnam and moved inside the Colonial’s main building when it opened in 1928. Putnam had spent one winter in Southern California’s temperate climate and decided to make La Jolla his home. After he bought the drugstore and moved it to its new home, he added an ice cream parlor on the sidewalk that served up chocolate sodas and banana splits. The drugstore became a prime location for locals to gather, talk, and watch the few passers by. The pharmacist, employed by Putnam, considered it a big day if he flled more than three prescriptions. Well-loved by the townspeople, the pharmacist was also the father of Gregory Peck. Peck, who grew up in La Jolla, eventually left for Hollywood and became a movie star.

19

Later on, the Colonial was a temporary home to some of Hollywood’s up-and-coming stars who were performing at the La Jolla Playhouse, founded by Peck. Charlton Heston, Dorothy McGuire, Groucho Marx, Jane Wyatt, Eve Arden, Pat O’Brien, David Niven, and many other celebrities occupied the hotel well into the late 1950s.

During World War II, the Colonial became home to many of the “top brass” from nearby Camp Callan. While the men were at Camp during the day, their wives volunteered for the local Red Cross. At night, the hotel’s sunroom was partitioned to create accommodations for single servicemen. In 1960, the drugstore needed more space, so Putnam’s son, “Putty” moved the establishment to new quarters, much to the chagrin of the community. Over time, the once grand hotel fell into a state of disrepair.

A MULTI-MILLION RESTORATION – NO EXPENSE SPARED

In 1976, three local partners purchased the Colonial for approximately $1 million. The Colonial’s name was changed to the Colonial Inn.

Over the next four years, the hotel went through a $3 million restoration that brought back its original grandeur. The 75-room property was designed “like an elegant, European hotel” by San Diego’s Robert Carlisle. No expense was spared - from mahogany trim and wood moldings to stylish leaded glass chandeliers and crystal doorknobs.

The restoration was so successful that the Inn received the “People in Preservation” award from Save Our Heritage Organization. It was said that “the Colonial Inn... brings the very best from La Jolla’s past tastefully into the present. Elegance, continental service, graceful design, and décor, all embraced in the ambiance of a small European hotel.” In 1980, the space once occupied by Putnam’s drugstore became Putnam’s Grille. Refecting the La Jolla of the 1920s, the restaurant was redesigned to feature dark wood paneling, wrought iron chandeliers and ceiling fans, oak dining sets, and large picture windows that created an open, fuid environment. The original soda fountain was replaced with a mirrored back bar and alcoholic beverages were served instead of ice cream sodas. The restaurant also stayed true to its heritage by ofering diners sidewalk seating, continuing the tradition of the past 85 years. Business continued to be good for the inn, and in 1988, it was sold for an estimated $13.85 million to a Japanese-based investment frm, Tokyo Masuiwaya California.

In 1993, “La Jolla’s Jewel,” as the Colonial Inn was affectionately referred to, celebrated its 80th birthday.
20

A NEW ERA

In July of 1998, Franklin Croft LLC and Fargo Hotel Investors LLC joined forces to create Fargo Colonial LLC and purchased the hotel, soon after changing its name to the Grande Colonial. Fargo Colonial LLC brought aboard hotel veteran Terry Underwood as general manager in 1999. From December 1999 through July 2001, the Grande Colonial went through an extensive $5 million renovation, and, under the leadership of Underwood, all 75 guest rooms, lobby, and restaurant were dramatically upgraded.

Putnam’s Grille closed its doors in the month of February 2001 and the Grande Colonial now houses one of the region’s fnest dining experiences, NINE-TEN Restaurant. The new restaurant opened in July 2001. Since opening, the restaurant has garnered numerous awards and accolades including a “very good to excellent” rating by ZAGAT. Additionally, the restaurant boasts: San Diego’s Best Chef of the Year Award, a Rising Star Chef Award, and San Diego Chef Hall of Fame induction (all three for Executive Chef Jason Knibb, who was also a 2011 contestant on Iron Chef America, challenging Bobby Flay to a seafood showdown). Most recently, in 2019, NINE-TEN received a “Plate Distinction” in the premiere California Michelin Guide, one of only 34 San Diego restaurants to receive such distinction.

TWO HISTORIC BUILDINGS FURTHER ELEVATE LA JOLLA’S GRANDE DAME

In 2007, the hotel took another stride forward as it unveiled the completion of an $8 million restoration project. Included was the renovation of the hotel’s existing 75 guest rooms, suites, and corridors in the main building, as well as the replacement of the original singlepane, wood-framed windows with double-pane, screen-less, tempered glass windows signifcantly improving the energy efciency and sound insulation. The project also included the preservation of two adjacent historic landmarks, the Little Hotel by the Sea (from 1924) and the Garden Terraces (from 1926), adding 18 new suites to the hotel’s inventory (all with kitchens or kitchenettes and many with freplaces). The eight-suite Little Hotel by the Sea and the ten-suite Garden Terraces, originally built as hotels, had operated as residential apartment complexes for the past 30 years and, under the guidance of the San Diego Historical Society, had now been restored to their original glory for the community to enjoy for years to come. To recognize their historical signifcance in the development of La Jolla, both properties were designated as historic sites in 1984 and 1990 respectively.

Two noteworthy elements of the Little Hotel by the Sea included the restoration of the rooftop “loft” and deck, and the restoration of the 1929 Baker & Sons elevator. The rooftop is now used as a guest library and sitting room, as well as an outdoor terrace providing panoramic views of the Pacifc. The Baker & Sons elevator, restored to full operation, is a fourpassenger, solid-mahogany elevator housed in a steel tower. Soon after it was added to the hotel back in 1929, The Little Hotel by the Sea became recognized as the “The Smallest Hotel in the World with an Elevator”.

In January 2012, the hotel unveiled yet another major milestone in its nearly 100-year history – the completion of a $500,000 renovation of its entry and foyer, lobby and surrounding public spaces, and two adjacent meeting rooms. In anticipation of the hotel’s Centennial Anniversary, the owners went to great lengths to enhance the feel of the hotel’s still intact turn-of-the-century architecture designed by noted area architect Richard Requa back in 1913. The sophisticated new décor carefully preserves the Grande Colonial’s enduring historic appeal, infusing a classic European ambiance and a refned, contemporary sophistication. In this spirit, the result showcases the fne architectural details – such as original Georgian style arches, original cast plaster crown moldings, lead glass windows, and intricate hand-stenciled ceilings.

21

CELEBRATING A CENTURY OF EXCELLENCE

On February 1st, 2013, the Grande Colonial celebrated what can be considered its most signifcant milestone: its 100th anniversary. Festivities to commemorate the Centennial dotted the calendar, helping one of San Diego’s most esteemed hotels share the stories of the movers and shakers who have passed through its doors in the 100 years since the hotel was founded. As part of the year-long Centennial celebration, the hotel developed a historic video montage and history booklet, as well as hosted several events to which members of the community were invited.

Additionally, a time capsule was buried underneath the hotel containing a collection of items relevant to the hotel, our community, and our present day. The capsule was dedicated with a permanent plaque inviting those who come after us to remember us and the time in which we lived by opening the capsule on February 1st, 2113.

THE NEW NINE-TEN DEBUTS

In 2017, it was NINE-TEN’s turn for attention, receiving $750,000 in improvements. In addition to major kitchen improvements, the entire main dining room and bar were completely refurbished. New elements include a refreshing color scheme with infusions of emerald green and light wood while keeping with the restaurant’s existing stone-tiled foor. The wood cladding throughout the room was resurfaced, changing the dark mahogany tones to a much lighter, aged-oak scheme. New paint and wall coverings also lightened up the dining room with a more modern vibe. The main focal point, however, is the vibrant and locally inspired ocean and fauna wall panorama created by local, renowned artist, Dana Montlack, alluding to the restaurant’s iconic location at La Jolla Cove.

And then just less than two years later, Bane’s legacy continued as the hotel completed a $4 million renovation of all guest rooms and suites, including a majority of the bathrooms. Artfully recapturing the

hotel’s storied past with a keen focus on modern sensibilities, the new design infused a classic European ambiance and refned, contemporary sophistication. The whimsical interiors and custom baths provide a relaxing atmosphere, allowing guests to open their windows to the sights and sounds of the seaside just steps away.

A GRANDE EXPANSION

At the same time as the 2019 room renovation, the hotel unveiled the completion of another historic restoration project, the adjacent Swansea Apartments, originally constructed in 1927 by local designer and builder, William B. Melhorn of the Melhorn Construction Company. The Tudorstyle building and four apartments have been completely restored and converted into four, 1-bedroom suites, and are now a part of the Grande Colonial’s total 97-room inventory.

Just as the hotel envisioned by George Bane, the Grande Colonial La Jolla, is a classic European-style hotel that rivals anything in the West. The Grande Colonial staf strives to preserve the heritage laid down by the hotel’s founders more than 100 years ago by providing the most gracious experience in resort and business accommodations.

REVITALIZING LA JOLLA

A Glimpse into the Proposed Redesign of the Rec Center

36
REVITALIZATION

Commissioned by philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps and designed by modernist architect Irving Gill, the La Jolla Recreation Center opened its doors in 1915. Serving as the civic heart of La Jolla, it ofered public meeting spaces and boasted the distinction of hosting the frst playground west of the Mississippi. Over the years, it has become a cherished institution, deeply woven into the fabric of the community’s identity. Now, after welcoming people for over one hundred years, a visionary project has emerged that seeks to honor the center’s rich legacy while ushering it into a new era of vitality and relevance.

A GLIMPSE INTO HISTORY

The La Jolla Recreation Center holds a special place in the hearts of residents, a testament to its enduring signifcance. From its inception, it has served as a beacon of recreation, culture, and community spirit. Throughout the decades, the Rec Center has witnessed countless milestones and memories—youth sports leagues, community picnics, cultural celebrations—all unfolding within its storied walls. It has been a gathering

place for families, friends, and neighbors, fostering bonds that transcend generations. Yet, as time marches on, so too does the need for adaptation and renewal.

THE VISION FOR RENEWAL

In revitalizing this one-hundred-year-old legacy, a project rooted in a deep reverence for the past and a bold vision for the future has emerged. Led by a coalition of community leaders, architects, and philanthropists, the proposed redesign of the La Jolla Rec Center represents a transformative leap forward, guided by principles of sustainability, inclusivity, and innovation. At its core, the vision for renewal seeks to preserve the essence of what makes the Rec Center so beloved while infusing it with new life and purpose. This entails not merely a cosmetic facelift but a comprehensive reimagination of its facilities, programming, and amenities. From its historic facade to its sprawling grounds, every aspect of the Rec Center will be revitalized to meet the evolving needs and aspirations of the La Jolla community.

37

KEY

FEATURES OF THE REDESIGN

The proposed redesign of the La Jolla Rec Center is characterized by several key features, each designed to enhance its functionality, accessibility, and aesthetic appeal:

1. PRESERVATION OF HISTORIC ELEMENTS

The architectural integrity of the original structure will be meticulously preserved, paying homage to its storied past while incorporating modern design elements that complement its timeless elegance.

2. EXPANSION AND MODERNIZATION OF FACILITIES

The Rec Center will undergo a comprehensive renovation, including the addition of state-of-the-art ftness facilities, multipurpose community spaces, and enhanced outdoor amenities, ensuring that it remains a premier destination for recreation and leisure.

3. INCLUSIVE PROGRAMMING AND SERVICES

A renewed focus will be placed on inclusivity and accessibility, with expanded programming tailored to individuals of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. This includes the development of youth and teen centers, cultural and performing arts pavilions, and educational initiatives aimed at fostering community engagement and enrichment.

4. SUSTAINABLE DESIGN AND ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

Building upon the legacy of Ellen Browning Scripps’s commitment to conservation, the redesigned Rec Center will incorporate sustainable design principles and native landscaping, minimizing its environmental footprint and serving as a model of eco-consciousness for future generations.

5. ENGAGING OCEAN-THEMED PLAYGROUND

As a nod to La Jolla’s coastal heritage, the redesign will feature a reimagined playground with an oceanic theme. Inspired by the rich marine life that inhabits the waters of the Pacifc, the playground will showcase engaging creatures from the sea, offering expanded play value for children of all ages.

LOOKING AHEAD

As the La Jolla Recreation Center embarks on this transformative journey, it does so with a sense of optimism and anticipation. With the visionary leadership of community stakeholders and the support of philanthropic partners like Ellen Browning Scripps, the Rec Center is poised to emerge stronger, more vibrant, and more inclusive than ever before. As the project progresses, it will serve as a testament to the enduring spirit of La Jolla—a spirit defned by innovation, resilience, and a deepseated commitment to community. The redesigned Rec Center will stand as a symbol of what can be achieved when a community comes together to breathe new life into a cherished institution.

38

“The La Jolla Rec. Center represents the Very Heart of our Community of La Jolla. We are the Stewards of the hard and important work Ellen Browning and Virginia Scripps did well over 100 years ago. With great Partnerships between The Friends of La Jolla Rec. Center, San Diego Park and Rec., The Bishop’s School, and many other designers and collaborators…we’ve created a progressive design that will take the La Jolla Recreation Center deep into the future; something we can be proud to hand over to our children and grand children.”

NINE-TEN

40

Located in a spot that boasts more than a century of memories, NINE-TEN Restaurant celebrates more than two decades as one of San Diego’s pioneer ‘farm-to-table’ restaurants with nationally acclaimed Chef Jason Knibb at the helm.

GLOBALLY INSPIRED. LOCALLY SOURCED.

Opened on July 17, 2001, NINE-TEN quickly became one of the region’s fnest dining establishments. Executive Chef, Jason Knibb, who joined the culinary team in 2003 and continues to hold the reins today after more than 20 years, is a recognized name in culinary circles across the country and universally acknowledged to be among the top chefs in Southern California for his consistently exquisite food and artistic presentations. Add to that on-site Pastry Chef, Jose Alonzo III, and a very long list of awards and accolades, the restaurant ofers the perfect combination of sophistication and casual elegance, making it a must-visit for culinary afcionados.

“More than two decades ago, NINE-TEN opened as one of the frst ‘farm-to-table’ concepts in San Diego,” said Chef Knibb, who has worked in renowned restaurants across the western region and trained under the culinary expertise of some of the country’s most celebrated chefs. “While we have continued to evolve throughout the years, we remain true to our foundation of emphasizing fresh, local products and culinary sustainability.”

41
CHEF PROFILE

NINE-TEN’s history dates back to 1926. Originally, the spot where the restaurant now sits was formerly the La Jolla Drugstore. In 1926, the store was purchased by Kansas native Silas O. Putnam and moved inside the adjacent Colonial Hotel’s main building (now the Grande Colonial Hotel). Putnam had spent one winter in Southern California’s temperate climate and decided to make La Jolla his home. After he bought the drugstore and moved it to its new home, he added an ice cream parlor on the sidewalk that served up chocolate sodas and banana splits. The drugstore became a prime location for locals to gather, talk, and watch the few passers-by. The pharmacist, employed by Putnam, considered it a big day if he flled more than three prescriptions. Wellloved by the townspeople, the pharmacist was also the father of Gregory

Peck. Peck, who grew up in La Jolla, eventually left for Hollywood and became a movie star. In 1980, the space once occupied by Putnam’s drugstore became Putnam’s Grille, which quickly became a local La Jolla landmark. The restaurant also stayed true to its heritage by ofering diners sidewalk seating, continuing the tradition of the past 65 years. Then in February of 2001, Putnam’s Grille closed its doors and six months later opened as NINE-TEN.

42

“We’ve come a long way since opening, continuing to evolve our seasonal, market cuisine into what it has become today,” added Chef Knibb.

“But one thing has remained constant: Our signature Half-Baked Chocolate Cake. The decadent dessert has been on the menu since day one and we have likely served up more than 100,000 of them to our guests.”

Throughout the years, NINE-TEN and Chef Knibb have amassed many awards and accolades, most notably: Zagat Survey® Food Score of 25 (very good to excellent); numerous “Best Chef in San Diego” nods from a variety of media outlets; Gayot’s Top 10 Molecular Restaurants in the U.S.; Zagat’s Top 10 Restaurants in San Diego; and a Rising Star Chef Winner/Star Chefs (one of only 2 chefs in San Diego to be recognized for this coveted honor), to name just a few.

In November of 2011, Chef was a contender on the Food Network’s Iron Chef America, battling Bobby Flay in a seafood/caviar showdown. This showing was the frst time a San Diego chef had been invited to compete on Iron Chef, marking yet another signifcant milestone in his culinary career.

In 2014, Chef Knibb was honored by the California Restaurant Association’s (CRA) San Diego Chapter as the “San Diego Chef of the Year”. The award was presented by San Diego’s Mayor, Kevin Faulconer. Considered San Diego’s most prestigious restaurant honors, the elegant “Gold Medallion Awards”gala attracted over 1,200 industry guests, including our city’s most celebrated restaurateurs, chefs, purveyors, city dignitaries, media, and foodies.

In 2019, the restaurant received “Plate Distinction” recognition in the premiere California MICHELIN Guide, one of only 34 San Diego restaurants to receive such distinction. This honor has been renewed each year thereafter, and the restaurant remains today one of only 37 San Diego restaurants to be recognized by MICHELIN.

43

Today, NINE-TEN ofers the perfect combination of sophistication and casual elegance, with a staf that is exceptionally well-trained and educated in the food and preparation methods, as well as wine selections and pairings. The warm ambiance of the interior is enhanced by the vibrant and locally inspired ocean and fauna wall panorama created by acclaimed artist, Dana Montlack. In addition to the main dining room, al fresco dining is ofered on the sidewalk patio or the back terrace with peeks of the Pacifc Ocean. Special prix fxe menus are available and feature matching wines from the extensive, Wine Spectator-recognized wine cellar.

NINE-TEN is currently open for breakfast and lunch, Wednesday through Friday. Dinner is served Wednesday through Sunday. A Weekend Brunch is ofered on Saturday and Sunday. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling (858) 964-5400 or online at www.nine-ten.com.

La Jolla’s Guardian of Animal Welfare ARK ANTIQUES

Elephants, lions, horses, tigers, dogs, bears and parrots are just a few of the majestic animals whose lives were saved over these past five decades thanks to generous proceeds from Ark Antiques.

Inside this celebrated La Jolla landmark store awaits rare oferings including ornate heirlooms, delicate porcelain, extraordinary fne art and exquisite jewelry. All this and more is found in this upscale nonproft consignment store that houses one-of-a-kind treasures whose proceeds have been benefting animal charities since the store’s opening in 1970. This ark requires the skill of a committed captain to steer it through both calm and turbulent waters, especially when the very lives of animals are dependent on its success. And at Ark Antiques, the captain of the ship is La Jollan, Elizabeth Davidson.

Elizabeth is the dedicated daughter of Betsy Hillyer who started the store with her close friend and fellow animal-lover, Sheila Vardaman. Elizabeth grew up surrounded by the heartbeat of creatures with wagging tails, rough paws, sharp beaks and sturdy hooves saved by the eforts of one powerfully caring store. Naturally, this helped mold her into the woman who eventually took over the reins of the business and continues to make it thrive today. Elizabeth herself has three dogs.

“Dogs ofer unconditional love and when they’re neglected, abused or abandoned, they don’t have a voice to tell people about their predicament. It’s a win-win for anyone who takes on reaching an animal,” Elizabeth explains.

Indeed, realizing the abundant needs of these furry friends is the purpose of this persevering business that has served as an animal lifeline for over 50 years. Just ask Lucy, a colorful parrot in her 30s who loves tangerines and calls Ark Antiques her happy home. Turns out Lucy is an Amazon parrot who Elizabeth describes as “very spoiled. She eats great and is very demanding.

47 PHILANTHROPY

And where would this magical shop be without the animal antics of parrots like Lucy? Thankfully, there are hundreds of wonderful animal charities whose whole mission is to enhance the wellbeing of animals. Indeed, since 2003, over $2.7 million has been donated by The Ark to countless organizations. These include Lion, Tigers, and Bears founded by Bobbi Brink, SNAP (Spay Neuter Action Project) led by executive director Dorrell Sackett, United Pegasus Foundation founded by Helen Meredith, Operation Greyhound founded by Bob and Bruna Palmatier and FACE Foundation by co-founder and president, Cini Robb.

Operation Greyhound takes in retiring racing Greyhound dogs. The charity faces challenging situations to save these dogs who are simply discarded when their racing heydays are over. But, this charity is supported both fnancially and in person by The Ark through weekly adoption events in front of their store.

See, The Ark is like a warm embrace that connects people shopping for true treasures of craftsmanship while beneftting countless animals. Naturally, this kind of undertaking requires an endless supply of amazing items to sell. And this is where Elizabeth and her talented team shine.

“It often is very carnival-like here. Most people are surprised at how interesting it is in here. There are hundreds of new things a month. We’ve tried to make it so there’s something for everybody,” Elizabeth explains. All it takes is a quick peek inside to understand why this eclectic store is an enduring success in La Jolla. RUSTIC RIDGE VINEYARD

“The most interesting thing about owning a winery with Rusty is everything falls into place. Opening the winery has been a blast. It’s been serendipitous,” Kerri explains.

WINE

The success of Rustic Ridge Vineyard in Jamul was written in the stars. Long before it was opened by La Jollans, Kerri Morrison and Rusty Beatty, the soil must have been priming for the occupancy of delicious grape vines. Rusty had owned this prime land for 21 years before it was cultivated into a slice of SoCal’s latest winery region. Indeed, various wineries in Jamul now boast optimum wine oferings including those found in this stunning winery ofering views to Mount Soledad.

It was only eight short years ago that this adventurous couple purchased grapes and began making wine. And by Halloween 2020, Rustic Ridge Vineyard was ofcially born. It’s dotted with 1000 vines spanning out over six acres. “Our experience as wine owners has been ridiculous. People are so nice. Everybody is happy and very thankful. Everyone says thanks for the experience and the fun.”

Naturally, the ability to experience wine tasting less than 30 minutes from La Jolla is a delicious weekend activity. Plus, the winery is also an ideal spot for hosting memorable corporate events and even innovative birthday celebrations. See, the winery’s ambiance is incredibly inviting. It’s cleverly decorated with two 53’ Chevys amongst wooden wine barrels, haystacks, pomegranate trees, fountains and inviting purple fowers thanks to Rusty’s green thumb and creative heart. There’s also a lovely gathering room and scenic wine terrace with views to the ocean and Coronado Island.

However, the couple maintains that their experience of creating the winery is best defned as “how not to start a winery.” Things developed rather organically instead of purposely. There was surprise and spontaneity involved in the process of birthing the winery.

51

Honestly, this may be why it evolved into something so delightful. As fate would have it, the couple were out enjoying themselves in a boat (Rusty constructed it) discussing what to do with the land when they decided to put up grapes for landscaping. Rusty had a friend who owned a vineyard in Sonoma so he was able to learn frsthand about creating a vineyard.

Plus, Rusty has a penchant for growing things that thrive and bloom into beauty. “Rusty never gets tired of growing things. He could take anything and make it grow,” Kerri explains. The evidence is apparent in the fourishing sweet pea bushes, potato bushes with purple fowers, purple grapes and plums decorating the winery.

None of this is surprising given the couple share a deep love of realizing beauty along with enough exposure in the business world to make their dreams happen. Together, their experience and passion resemble a Cabernet and Berry wine that taste diferently yet combine seamlessly to create a booming winery.

The adult-friendly winery is most popular for its sumptuous Cabernet, Sauvignon Blanc and Berry wines (the blueberry in particular). Luckily for La Jollans, a Cab and white blend are available in both Dick’s Liquor and Bird Rock Fine Wine. Rustic Ridge Vineyard is open for wine tastings on the weekends from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cheers! Rusticridgevineyards.com.

“We’re excited, we waited a long time to make sure we had the commitment to deliver. It’s very exciting. Everyone loves local wine.”

THE ICE HOTEL

Glistening under the magical Northern lights in Sweden awaits a slice of heaven sculpted out of snow and ice. Here beckons a frosty paradise known as the Icehotel that’s created anew every winter by artisans who turn lumps of snow and ice into miraculous sculptures that melt in spring. The Icehotel made its debut in a furry of snowfakes in 1989 as the world’s frst hotel beautifully designed freezing on ice.

Six years after the hotel’s creation in 1995, La Jollan, Mark Munoz was doing business in Stockholm (while living in London) when he frst heard of the unique creation erected in the forest. It planted a seed of wanderlust that fnally culminated into a trip to its enchanting facade nearly 30 years later with his wife, La Jollan, Kathryn Munoz.

“The enormity of what they create every winter is very impressive,” Mark explains. Indeed, various hotel rooms made of snow and ice are chipped away at every winter to create original sculpted decor including an ice bed. Yes, there’s a bed designed for sleeping in each freezing hotel room made out of pure ice.

54
TRAVEL
“The enormity of what they create every winter is very impressive.”
55

Kathryn recalls sleeping on the ice bed during their visit in January. They wore woolen thermal underwear within the sleeping bags provided by the Icehotel. Did they sleep? Yes, for around seven hours in fact. It was just enough to ensure they’d built up an appetite for the fresh, creatively prepared cuisine served by an adventurous, international team. Not surprisingly, the unique allure of the Icehotel reaches across the globe culminating into a diverse range of tourists and staf alike.

For Kathryn, a visit to the Icehotel ofered an amazing opportunity to realize a bucket list experience within an “aggressive cold environment.” Indeed, a snow hotel where bedrooms are divided by fowing curtains remind you that you’ve defnitely traveled far away from SoCal’s charming sand castle art.

But both Mark and Kathryn recognized that the ice sculptures are comparable to the incredible sand castle creations we fnd on our San Diego shores. Think ice mermaids, horses and dazzling chandeliers.

56

Plus, the excitement of being in the unique world of the Icehotel is enhanced by oferings of excursions such as snowmobiling out to see the Northern lights by twilight.

The tantalizing display splashed across the sky thanks to the Northern lights is something this intrepid couple will never forget. It’s a majestic phenomenon that makes even the occurrence of “ice particles on your eyelashes” that formed from the cold, as Kathryn remembers them, all worth it. The couple also experienced dog sledding and a moose safari on horseback. During their visit, sunrise was at 9:30 a.m. and sunset at 2 p.m.

Another experience not to be missed is the intricately sculpted ice bar dotted with “freezing resistant” reindeer skins on which to sit. Naturally the bar sculpted out of ice serves its cocktails in glasses made out of ice as well. Indeed, a cocktail to warm the body may be precisely what is needed after a day of freezing temperatures. So why is there a red fre extinguisher hanging on the snow wall in the Icehotel’s bar with a temperature hovering in the 20s? This is a question we may never answer. But the mystery remains.

CUSTOM SHIRTS OF LA JOLLA

It’s all in the collar. Indeed, a fashionable collar on a man’s custom shirt completes the whole look. And this is why Custom Shirts of La Jolla/Bendls excels as La Jolla’s favorite one-stop shop for men’s and women’s fashion. This comes as no surprise given that since 1977 owners Gerhard and Elisabeth Bendls have ensured that it serves as The Jewel’s favorite custom shirt shop.

“The basic premise of having shirts made and what we do is make our customers look better and feel more comfortable,” Gerhard explains. Dressing La Jollans for over 45 years comes with incredible knowledge and a fashion sense. It’s something this duo takes very seriously. They’re like the thread that sews the fabric of La Jolla fashion together. The store ofers high-quality, yet fairly-priced women’s clothing and, of course, a plethora of quality men’s fashions. This includes men’s socks that won’t fall down even after two years!

Dedicated customer, Dave Cody appreciates this kind of high-quality which makes him a genuine fan of the store. “I have been a customer of Gerhard’s for the past 20 years. I have purchased suits, sports jackets, slacks,

dress shirts as well as sweaters, jeans, and ties from Gerhard,” Cody says.

Plus, Bendls stands resolute behind their clothing. If something isn’t right, they make it right. Their solid reputation makes their business a fvestar experience. Of course, this is what a customer should expect when shopping at a reputable store or having a custom shirt made. Especially when you realize that having a shirt custom-made is, in fact, a special science.

It involves taking about 14 diferent measurements. Four of which are done on the collar alone. Other measurements include the hip, waist, chest, shoulder, sleeve length, wrist, and length of the shirt. And fnally, they try on the actual collar. By doing so, they’re able to determine the actual length of the collar. Again, they have it down to an actual science. “The collar style consists of the angle and then the length of the collar is also determined,” Gerhard explains

All of this combines to create a perfectly ftted shirt that stands apart from mere special order shirts. There’s a signifcant diference. Special order shirts do not take measurements to create a top.

59
FASHION
“You don’t want to spend your money on something you don’t get a lot of use out of. Quality is the most important component. The garment looks better when it’s good quality,” Gerhard says.

“Gerhard is meticulous in giving me the right ft through his measuring techniques. I have never had a piece of clothing not ft me perfectly,” customer Cody explains.

Of course, shopping through Bendls women’s clothing is also delightful. Elisabeth has curated an eclectic, yet tasteful selection of clothing many customers rely on for their originality and quality. Expect a purposeful line of European and Canadian collections from a wide array of designers. Most importantly, their customers are routinely treated like part of the family.

“All the people who shop here come in to fnd something special, not something you fnd everywhere. We know our local customers well. We know their size and what they like because we’ve learned,” Elisabeth explains. This kind of exceptional service may be rare today, but it’s still thriving at Bendls. They also have dedicated shoppers who live elsewhere but conduct business with them remotely. They keep all their regular customer’s measurements so they can order custom shirts or women’s clothing. Bendls is located at 7872 Girard Avenue, (858) 459 6147.
