¿Por cuántos lugares pasamos hoy? López y Pérez pasan por Calama, Coyhaique, Amazonas, Rabat, Ventanas, Salamanca, Santiago, Valparaíso, Berlín, Sao Paulo… Las fotografías de El Luche aseguran que están presentes en Colchane, Junta del Potro, Calama. Al regresar a casa, las fotografías de Colchane, Junta del Potro, Calama señalan su ausencia en Colchane y Junta del Potro.

López y Pérez traen en sus miradas la ausencia multiplicada por dos.

Cuando me piden que escriba un texto para El Luche, aluden a una supuesta complicidad que se remonta a nuestra común participación en los movimientos contra la dictadura militar en los años 80. Después de esa época no volví a encontrarlos. A excepción del año 2000, cuando me pidieron un texto para el libro y exposición El artificio del lente. Han pasado 21 años. Ya no compartimos bares, lecturas, películas, calles, plazas, puertas. Pero algo les hace creer que he pasado por una experiencia similar a la de El Luche o que intelectualmente puedo llegar a comprender y a ponerla en palabras.

El detalle de la experiencia vivida por López y Pérez la encuentro en las últimas páginas del libro, en una larga lista de lugares en los que fueron tomadas las fotografías. Hay más de cuarenta. Marruecos, el Amazonas, el desierto chileno, Valparaíso, Ciudad de México, no conforman un libro de Marruecos, el Amazonas, el desierto chileno… Son lugares de paso, decorados pintados a mano o industrialmente, capturados a través del vidrio de un automóvil, un tren, un avión, una vitrina, un hotel, un restaurante, un bar. No parece importar si son imágenes del televisor, de un letrero o de una calle. Los fotógrafos no encuentran distinción entre lo real y lo imaginario, entre el original y la copia, entre la persona o la cosa y su reflejo.

Estar de paso es una forma de ausencia.

De retirarse.

Sin motivo para estar ahí, ahí se está.

Imagino a López y a Pérez vendedores viajeros: meten sus pertenencias en un bolso, las cámaras en un maletín. De noche, de día, de mañana, toman un avión, una furgoneta, un tren. Llegan a una laguna, a un salar, a una mina; no para fotografiar una mina, un salar, una laguna, sino un producto, un gerente, una oficina.

Vuelven a la habitación de un hotel de cinco… ¿serán seis las estrellas? Al menos tiene cable. Todos los productos terminan pareciéndose, también los hoteles, los restaurantes, los barcos pintados no sirven para salir de allí. Hasta los whiskys acaban pareciéndose. Y las horas.

Si hubiesen querido que escribiera de su experiencia lejos de casa, hubieran buscado a alguien que conozca sus domicilios, sus libros, sus películas, sus plazas. A menos que no se sientan lejos de una casa sino del hogar. Emparentado con brillar, con mostrar, con traer a la luz, con faro, el hogar es donde se prepara el fuego. Cuando en los años 80 compartimos libros, películas, calles, plazas, López y Pérez siempre estaban yendo a algún lugar. Se les esperaba para que mostraran, sacarán a la luz, calentaran, alimentaran.

El hogar, ¿las esperanzas?

Rabat, Amazonas, Berlín, París, Colchane, Berlín, Santiago, Valparaíso, tan lejos del fuego.

No hay épica que los convoque ni Itaca al cual volver. Sí se resisten a llegar al lugar donde no los espera un fuego encendido. Demoran el paso. Miran hacia atrás. Frente a su casa, en una solitaria noche, hay un auto estacionado. Adentro del auto, una mujer dormida espera el regreso del hombre que la conducirá a salvo a la casa. Se ve tan frágil, tan delgada la capa que separa a la noche de la mujer dormida, y ellos están lejos, no pueden hacer nada… ¿Por qué no están junto al fuego? ¿Tiene sentido resistir, retrasar, demorar? ¿Alguien llegará con los fósforos?

Los vendedores viajeros juegan partidas de solitarios. López y Pérez se envían imágenes por correo: - Parto de Colchane.

- Llegando a Puerto Coca, una ventana.

- Dos semanas ausente de casa.

- Un auto estacionado en la arena.

- Un árbol que sobrevivió al mar.

- Una pantalla gigante.

Un intercambio postal, un Luche, un inventario a la manera de Perec de los lugares de paso, de las imágenes que los detienen por un segundo, el segundo en el que existen y no. Las imágenes retratadas al paso están teñidas por la pátina de lo que ha envejecido. Sin embargo López y Pérez no vuelven o no permanecen el tiempo suficiente en esos lugares para envejecer con ellos. Es la ausencia la que envejece las imágenes, la que vela el objeto y permite que asome la huella. Si hace 21 años la tensión estaba en la relación entre las cosas que aparecían en el cuadro, ahora está en la ausencia del fotógrafo.

A veces yo también tengo la impresión de que vivo en la ausencia.

El luche de Cortazar tiene como base la tierra y como techo el cielo. Los fotógrafos ya pasaron el punto medio, están más cerca del cielo que de la tierra. ¿Qué es lo que me piden que lea como una cómplice? Leo Conversación en Sicilia de Vittorini. El narrador vuelve después de quince años a su hogar en Sicilia y lo encuentra devastado por la guerra y el hambre. Siempre estuvo devastado, antes no lo vio, ahora que lleva consigo la distancia, sí puede notarlo. En el tren se encuentra con un hombre grande y fuerte que se queja porque el hombre está maduro para algo más. “No solo para no robar, no matar, etcétera, y para ser buen ciudadano.

Está maduro para algo más, para otros, nuevos deberes. Esto es lo que se siente creo yo: la falta de otros deberes”.

Después de tres días, que pueden ser cinco años o cuarenta lugares, el narrador de Vittorini abandona Sicilia por segunda vez. Su mirada, como las miradas de Pérez y López, ha mudado. En vez del hambre y la guerra, ven un mundo ofendido por las acciones del hombre. “El mundo es grande y hermoso pero está ofendido. Todos sufren, cada cual por sí, pero no por el mundo, que está ofendido, por lo que sigue ofendido”.

Las fotografías de Pérez y López iluminan las ofensas que el ser infringe al mundo en Colchane, Sao Paulo, Rabat, Berlín, Valparaíso, la Cordillera de Los Andes, Buenos Aires. ¿Cuáles son esos otros deberes que podrían reparar las ofensas? Es lo que estas fotografías de paso nos preguntan.

De silencios y fragmentos

La dificultad mayor de la imagen es su condición de superficie. Pero si esta imagen es fotográfica, es mayor aún el problema. Son dos en realidad, la fotografía desreferencializada obliga a volcarse sobre uno mismo para ver si logra abrir el sentido de la provocación visual; el riesgo es quedar al descubierto por no encontrar nada y reconocer que la fotografía supera las posibilidades de comprensión y lectura o, peor aún, y este sería el segundo problema, que a pesar de los más de ciento cincuenta años de historia de fotografía nada sabemos de ella.

La fotografía es, entonces, una grave interpelación hacia el sujeto que la mira. Si la práctica y uso de ella ha sido desde los sistemas de información, el énfasis está desplazado hacia el referente; de este modo la imagen es una debilidad que depende del sentido alojado en la materia fotografiada. Si no hay acceso a dicha materia, la posibilidad comunicativa, en su calidad informativa, pierde vigor, abriendo un espacio de incertidumbre, de ambigüedad, de alegoría.

La experiencia cotidiana está sostenida en lo misterioso; más difícil, el ser humano sólo comprende su acontecer desde su inclinación al misterio. ¿Qué es este misterio? Es la imposibilidad de llegar a alguna certeza. No hay verdad posible de todo aquello que se ofrece al entendimiento, por lo tanto es lo misterioso el sustrato desde donde se despliega la existencia. ¿Por qué las cosas son como son? No soy pesimista si pienso que nunca lo sabremos. Esta inclinación al misterio ha sido la razón de la simbolización del mundo; hecho que no termina con la creciente secularización. Los dioses toman formas cada vez más extravagantes Han tenido forma humana, meros espíritus, como fuerzas naturales, y cuando ya no había posibilidad de encontrar una nueva forma, cuando el vacío inexorable amenazaba con irrumpir y dejar en el más profundo abandono al estupefacto ser humano, aparece un dispositivo “técnico” que lo llena de sentido: la fotografía.

El ojo mecánico se detiene, guiado por el ojo orgánico, sobre y en el objeto, o en las cualidades de los objetos. Este hecho se constituye en la fundamentación de un acto

que ha estado extraviado en la interpretación de las relaciones de ese objeto con su escenario, el que está mucho más allá de las posibilidades de acceso de quien ve la foto. Estar sobre y en las cualidades del objeto dispone la mirada en lo transitorio de toda cosa que se yergue como significación autónoma. ¿Es posible pensar la fotografía desde esta condición? ¿Qué alcance cultural y por esto simbólico puede tener la fotografía? No se fotografía a ninguna cosa, sino a su cualidad, a su aparición; no es posible acceder a ninguna evidencia más que a la de la fugacidad del acontecer; por lo mismo la fotografía es pura experiencia, es pura contingencia, es pura accidentalidad. Es la pura existencia en su manifestación fenoménica más radical.

Esta radicalidad se desplaza al sujeto que manipula el dispositivo técnico, al ojo orgánico; ¿por qué el uso de este aparato? ¿Qué tiene este aparato que fascina? Fascina porque nos engaña en el registro de la fugacidad, porque le da forma y volumen a la virtualidad de la percepción. El ojo orgánico sólo ve superficies que ahora se materializan en otra superficie, la fotográfica.

Esta descripción no debe ser entendida como una debilidad de la fotografía, sino más bien como su mayor fortaleza: el fotógrafo es el autor de sus imágenes y todo lo que fotografía construye la narración de su propia historia visual.

Lo significativo es que el fotógrafo documental tiene como materia primera su propia circunstancia y su determinada inclinación a una parcela particular de ella. Es decir, la materia es dada, está ahí, a la mano y si no es así el fotógrafo se acerca hasta que esté a su alcance, hasta que su ojo se detenga y la cámara interprete, traduzca, reimagine, construya, fragmente, detenga, borre, simbolice lo visto.

El luche que tengo en mis manos no es el juego, ni es el alimento, pero lo es, en uno y otro caso, a la vez. Pero, tanto el juego, como el alimento son una necesidad ¿qué hay de necesidad en este Luche?. Tal vez una de carácter fundamental: cierta revelación de lo que está a la vista y que se nos arranca. Pero esto es en gran medida puro vacío… Es larga la tradición de fotografías llenas : gestos, acciones, momentos de gran tensión, escenas determinantes de acontecimientos históricos colectivos, etc. Pero hoy no está allí la historia. Es tal el acceso a estos hechos, que podemos ver en directo el asesinato de “enemigos” al otro lado del mundo, pero esta accesibilidad anula la eficacia de estas fotos. Hoy la historia se acerca al vacío cotidiano, a los silencios prolongados, a los momentos de espera, a las transiciones y tránsitos urbanos, la cama sin hacer, el hombre al final del pasillo, el

escenario construido por una puerta de vidrio, unas niñitas escribiendo en un patio y a contraluz. Es aquí donde se despliega certeramente el sentido. En la ventana de la habitación, en la propia habitación, en la ventana del bus, en el estacionamiento del edificio, en la ventana del avión, del auto, en la ventana que se ve desde la ventana… Pero la ventana es la determinación de un paisaje, hoy es el marco invertido de Alberti: el cuadro no es una ventana al mundo, sino que la ventana es el reencuadre del rectángulo fotográfico que la alegoriza.

Estas fotografías de Claudio y Héctor están hechas a dos manos. La coordinación estructural y estética nos conduce sin vacilación por el mismo sentido. Aún cuando son fotografías de distintos tiempos y lugares, la ausencia, el vacío, la veladura, la trama, el reflejo, el fragmento, el reencuadre del encuadre, la penumbra, lo abandonado, las siluetas, lo ominoso, lo extravagante, lo divertido, la imagen dentro de la imagen, la piel, son metáforas que van de un fotógrafo a otro, de un lente a otro, de un ojo a otro. Por esto, estas fotografías no son un diálogo, sino más bien un soliloquio a dos voces, una unidad, una proximidad que va más lejos que lo puramente fotográfico. Esta unidad no es falta de autonomía, es la exposición de una historia común que se construyó cuando la fotografía tenía una fuerza revolucionaria en el más estricto sentido político; cuando la fotografía estaba al servicio de la historia colectiva, cuando tomar fotografías era tensionar el orden iconográfico del poder político de la dictadura. Esta unidad es el resultado de la confianza, del respeto, del reconocimiento del otro.

Este trabajo tiene antecedentes fotográficos significativos. Héctor y Claudio han sido actores relevantes de la fotografía contemporánea chilena. En los años ochenta fue la fotografía política, en el 2000 El artificio del lente. Apuntes de viaje, junto a Álvaro Hoppe y Javier Godoy. Este artificio resulta fundamental para comprender las imágenes que acá se presentan. Este documental fotográfico a cuatro manos es la intención de forzar el lenguaje y llevarlo hacia la “desreferencialidad” y constituir la imagen en la referencia de sí misma, en girar sobre la fotografía y quedándose en ella construir el sentido. En El luche, la apuesta es más radical. Las fotografías no pretenden decir nada que no esté contenida dentro de ellas; no existe plan de producción específico; son los fotógrafos los que se sitúan en el lugar del referente, por lo tanto lo que tenemos frente a los ojos es a los fotógrafos mismos. Pero ya no basta con decir que se expresa la “mirada” o la subjetividad del autor, lo que

vemos en estas fotos es un juicio, es una posición crítica respecto de la condición del individuo contemporáneo. Para la magnitud de esta proyección la fotografía es el lenguaje apropiado: las formas “mudas” sobre la superficie redirigen el sentido a los ojos de quien sostiene este libro y es el silencio el signo elocuente del misterio de la precariedad de los sujetos fotografiados como del que los mira…

How many places did we passed by today?

López and Pérez pass through Calama, Coyhaique, the Amazon, Rabat, Ventanas, Salamanca, Santiago, Valparaíso, Berlín, Sao Paulo… The photos of El Luche ensure that it is present in Colchane, Junta del Potro, Calama. Upon coming home, the same photos of Colchane, Junta del Potro, Calama show their absence in Colchane and Junta del Potro.

López and Pérez bring in their view an absence multiplied by two.

When they asked me to write a text for El Luche, they alluded to a supposed complicity that goes back to our common participation in the movement against the military dictatorship during the ‘80s. After that time, I never met them again. Except for the year 2000 when I was asked a text for the book and exhibition El artificio del lente. 21 years have gone by. We no longer share bars, readings, movies, streets, squares, doors. But something makes them believe that I have gone through a similar experience to that of El Luche or that I can intellectually understand it and put it in words.

I found the details of the experience lived

by López and Pérez in the last pages of the

book, in a long list of the places where the photos were taken. There are more than forty. Morocco, the Amazon, the Chilean desert, Valparaíso, Mexico City, they didn’t make a book of Morocco, the Amazon, the Chilean desert... Those are passing places, decorations painted by hand or industrially, captured through the glass of a car, a train, a plane, a showcase, a hotel, a restaurant, a bar. It doesn’t seem to matter if they are television images, signs or street drawings.

The photographers don’t distinguish between the real thing and imagination, between original and copy, between the person or the thing and its reflection.

Laying down on a bed in a hotel, López watches the blade of the ceiling fan spin.

Passing by is a way of absence.

Of withdrawing.

Without reason to be there, you are.

I imagine López and Pérez, the traveler salespeople: put their belongings in a bag and the cameras in a briefcase. At night, during the day, in the morning, they take a plane, a van, a train. They arrive to a lake, to a salt pan, to a mine; not to photograph a mine, a salt pan, a lake, but a product, a manager, an office. They return to their room in a hotel

of five… maybe six stars?. At least it has cable TV. Every products ends up looking alike, hotels and restaurants, the painted ships don’t take you out of there. Even a whisky starts to taste the same as any other.

And the hours.

If they wanted me to write their experience far from their houses, they had sought someone who knew their addresses, their books, their movies, their squares. Unless they didn’t feel far from a house but far from home. In connection with sparkle, with showing, with bringing to the light, with a lighthouse, home is where fire is made.

When we shared books, movies, streets and squares back in the ‘80s, López and Pérez were always going places. They were waited on, to show, to bring to the light, to warm, to feed.

The home, hopes?

Rabat, the Amazon, Berlín, París, Colchane, Berlín, Santiago, Valparaíso, so far from the fire.

There is no epic tale to be summoned upon, no Ithaca to come back to. They avoid arriving to a place without fire waiting for them. They delay their steps. Look back.

There’s a car parked outside their house, on a lonely night. Inside the car, a woman is a sleep, waiting the return of the man that will take her home safe. She looks so fragile, so thin the layer that separates the night from the sleeping woman. And they are so far away. They can’t do anything.

Why are they not next to the fire? Does it have any sense to resist, to delay, to postpone? Will someone come with matches?

The travelling salesmen play solitary. López and Pérez send images by mail: - Leaving Colchane.

- Arriving to Puerto Coca, a window.

- Two weeks away from home.

- A car parked in the sand.

- A tree survived the sea.

- A giant screen.

A postal exchange, a Luche, an inventory the Georges Perec way of the passing places, from the images that stop them for a second, a second where they exist and they don’t. The images portrayed passing by are tainted with patina, making it age.

However, López and Pérez don’t go back and don’t stay long enough in those places to age with them. Is the absence that age the images, watching over the object and

letting the trace show. If 21 years ago the tension was in the relation to the things that appeared in the picture, now it is in the absence of the photographer.

Sometimes I also have the impression that I live in absence.

El Luche by Cortazar has a base the ground and as ceiling the sky. The photographers already passed the medium point, they are closer to the sky than the ground. What are they asking me to read as an accomplice?

I read Conversations in Sicily by Vittorini. The narrator returns after fifteen years to his home in Sicily and finds everything devastated by war and hunger.

He was always devastated. He didn’t see it before, but now that he has some distance, he can. In the train he meets a big, strong man that claims men mature by doing something else. “Not by stealing, not killing, and so forth, by being a good citizen. I think one matures by doing something else, by taking on new, different duties. That’s what we all feel, I think, the absence of other duties”.

After three days, that could be five years or forty places, Vittorini’s narrator leaves Sicily a second time. His eyes, like Pérez and

López, have move on. Instead of hunger and war, they see a world offended by the actions of men.

“The world is big and beautiful but it is offended. Everybody suffers, for themselves, but not for the world, that is offended, and therefore it continues being offended”.

Pérez and López’s photographs illuminate the offenses that can be break the world of Colchane, Sao Paulo, Rabat, Berlín, Valparaíso, the Andes mountain range, Buenos Aires.

What are the other duties that could repair the offenses? That’s what these passthrough photographs are asking us.

The biggest difficulty of image is its surface capacity. When this image is of a photographic nature, then the issue gets greater.

There’s, actually, two issues. The desreferencial photography forces to look within yourself to see if you can get the significance of the visual provocation; the risk is to be exposed for not finding anything and to acknowledge that photography exceeds the possibility of comprehension and reading, or, worse yet, the second issue is that even though we have more than one hundred and fifty years of history of photography, we still know nothing of it.

Photography is, then, a serious question to the subject on target. If the practice and use of it comes from the information systems, the emphasis is displaced to the referenced one; this way, the image is a weakness that depends on the direction placed in the photographed material. If there is no access to said material, the communicative possibility, in its informative quality, loses energy, leaving room for uncertainty, ambiguity, allegory.

The everyday experience it’s supported by mystery; harder, the human being only understands his or her own happe-

penings, thanks to his or her inclination to mystery; what is this mystery? It’s the impossibility of getting some certainty.

There’s no possible truth from everything that leads to understanding, so the mystery is the stratum from where existence is spread. Why are things like they are?

I’m not a pessimist if I think that we will never know. This inclination to mystery has been the reason of the symbolization of the world; a fact that doesn’t end with the growing secularization. The gods take shapes more extravagant every time. They have had human form, common spirits, natural forces, and when there’s no possibility of finding a new shape, when the inexorable void threatens to burst in and leave the astonished human being feeling completely abandoned, a “technical” device shows up, full of meaning: the photography.

The mechanical eye stops, guided by the organic eye, above and within the object, or in the quality of the objects. This fact is built in the foundation of an act that has been lost in the interpretation of the relationships of this object with its stage, being further away from the possibilities of access of the one who sees the photo. Being above and

within the qualities of the object points to the transitory feel of everything that is straightened with an autonomous significance. Is it possible to think of photography from this perspective? What cultural and symbolic means can photography have?

Is not a thing that is photographed, but a quality, an appearance; is not possible to access more evidence than the fleetingness of what is taking place; because of this, photography is pure experience, pure contingency, pure accident. It is pure existence in its more radical and phenomenal manifestation.

This radicalism is taken by the subject, who manipulates the technical device, to the organic eye; why the use of this device? What does this device has that fascinates us? It fascinates us because it fools us with the registration of fleetingness, because it gives form and volume to the virtual perception.

The organic eye only sees surfaces that now are materialized on another surface, a photographic one.

This description shouldn’t be understood as a weakness of photography, but as its biggest strength: the photographer is the author of his images and everything photo-

graphy builds with the narration of its own visual history.

What is significant is that the documentary photographer has his own circumstances and his own specific inclination to a particular part of it as his raw material. This means, the material is given, it’s there, at the reach of the hand, and if that’s not the case, the photographer will go closer, until his eye stops and the camera interprets, translates, re-imagines, builds, fragments, halts, deletes, symbolizes what he has seen.

El luche that I have in my hands is not a game, nor it is food, but it is, one way or another, both. But, both the game and the food are a necessity, what is the necessity of this Luche? Maybe it’s something fundamental: some revelation of what can be seen and what escapes us. This is, in a sense, pure void… The tradition of full photographs is long : gestures, actions, moments of great tension, deciding scenes of collective historic events, etc. But history is not there today. The access to these facts allows us to see live the assassination of “enemies” at the other side of the world, but this access cancels the effectiveness of these photos. Today, history comes close to everyday

void, prolonged silences, moments of waiting, urban transition and transit, an unmade bed, a man at the end of the hallway, the stage built by a glass door, girls writing in the yard and against the light. It’s here where accurate significance spreads. In the window of the room, in the room itself, in the window of the bus, in the parking lot of the building, in the window of the plane, of the car, in the window that can be seen from the window… But the window is the determination of a landscape, today it’s the reversed frame of Alberti: the picture is not a window to the world, but the window is the frame of the photographic rectangle that it allegorizes.

These photographs of Claudio and Héctor are made with two hands. The structural and esthetic coordination drives us without vacillation through the same direction.

Even when they are photographs with different times and places, the absence, the void, the glaze, the plot, the reflection, the fragment, the reframing of the framing, the shadows, the abandoned, the silhouettes, the despicable, the extravagant, the entertaining, the image within the image, the skin, are metaphors that go from a photo-

grapher to another, from a lens to another, an eye to another eye. Because of this, the Because of this, the photographs are not a dialogue, but a soliloquy in two voices, a unity, a proximity that goes beyond what’s purely photographic. This unity is not a lack of autonomy, is the exhibition of a common history that was build when photography was a revolutionary force in the strict political sense; when photography was at the service of the collective history, when taking photographs was to strain the iconographic order of the dictatorship’s political power. This unity is the result of the trust, the respect, the acknowledgement of the other.

This work has significant photographic precedent. Héctor and Claudio have been relevant actors of contemporary photography in Chile. In the ‘80s it was political photography, in the 2000s it was El artificio del lente. Apuntes de viaje (The lens’ device.

Travel notes), with Álvaro Hoppe and Javier Godoy. This device is fundamental to understand the images that are presented here. This photographic documentary made with four hands is the intention of forcing the language and taking it to the “desrefere-

tiality”, and building the image in relation to itself, going around the photograph and staying in it, creating its meaning. In El Luche, the bet was more radical. The photographs don’t pretend to say anything that’s not contained inside them; there’s no specific plan of production; it’s the photographers the ones putting themselves in the place of the referenced, so what we have in front of our eyes is the photographers themselves. But it’s no longer enough to say that the “perspective” or the subjectivity of the author is expressed, what we see is a judgment, a critical statement about the condition of the contemporary individual. For the magnitude of this projection the photography is the appropriate language: the “mute” forms of the surface redirect the direction of the eyes of the one who keeps this book, and it’s the silence the eloquent sign of the precariousness’ mystery of both the photographed subjects and those that see them…
