Our flagship event is the Taste of Coogee food and wine festival. This year Coogee Oval was refused by council and COVID-schmovid continued to be an unknown entity, so the executive committee of Coogee Chamber decided to cancel Taste of Coogee in 2020 and publish this booklet instead.

Hooray for NSW Chamber for giving the grant to make this booklet possible and high fives to all the advertisers, every one of which paid to be in this booklet, including committee members. See page 6 for more about Taste of Coogee, how it is run and why it has been an uphill battle against mystery paddle pop sticks.

Lions Club

Coogee lies on the land of Bidigal people of the Eora Nation. This beautiful bay was a fishing spot for its original custodians and is named in the local language. Some say it means ‘stinky place’ because seaweed would pile up and bake in the sun once or twice a year. Other elders say the Bidigal language refers to ‘hilly place.’ It’s all uphill from the beautiful sand on Coogee Beach.

Where there’s a need, there’s a Lion. Lions is Australia’s largest service organisation. Coogee Lions Club is a group of local residents on a mission to help those in need and make a difference in our local community.

the opposite as council fees have made the event almost impossible to finance. Hooray for good weather on day two in 2019 which meant those fees were covered by the huge, wonderful attendance on a sunny Sunday.

For the record

Taste of Coogee is the Coogee Chamber of Commerce flagship event which has run since 2013. Its purpose is to bring people to Coogee and support local businesses. In 2020 Taste of Coogee was cancelled for lack of council support.

It was first held on Goldstein Reserve but grew too big for that spot. After negotiation with Council and the Randy Petes the event moved to Coogee Oval in 2016.

Coogee Oval is a safe, fenced venue which is owned by rates payers - perfect for one weekend a year between the rugby and cricket seasons.

However, in April 2020, Council voted to refuse the use of the oval. Reasons given were that it might pose safety concerns for cricketers but was was not elaborated on. The other mystery reason was that “paddle pop sticks emerged through the grass in December”. For an event in September, this seemed fanciful.

The chamber was offered Trennery Reserve - the dog park past Wylies Baths, up on the cliff. This venue is too small, has no parking or transport and is an unsafe location. Council has never used Trennery for a major event for all those reasons.

Taste of Coogee has paid $33K in fees to Council for 2019 alone. The event is not funded by ratepayers. Quite 6

The cricket pitch is fenced off for the event and any damage to entry ways have always been paid for, repaired and signed off before cricket season. In 2019 this cost only $800 in repairs. The Argentina vs Randwick invitation match the following weekend went ahead and the cricket season launched without a hitch.

In 2017 and 2018, Taste of Coogee gave the Cricket Club a $10K donation, as negotiated by them. When this was not possible in 2019, thanks to council fees, the relationship between the chamber and the cricket club rapidly soured. Not so Randy Petes.

Coogee Oval is for all ratepayers. Not just sport. It’s for seniors, families. All of us.

2020 delivered the COVID-curveball and so it turns out that it’s a good year to take a break from a major event. Let’s work together for a fabulous 2021 event.

funded by fun in the sun Coogee Chamber of Commerce chose The Banksia Project as the charity of choice for 2019 and 2020.

Focused on early intervention, The Banksia Project runs free community-based programs for men called Growth Rooms.

Growth Rooms are peer-to-peer sessions that give men a safe opportunity to come together, connect and support each other in their community. About ten men in each Growth Room meet for about two hours each month to share their experiences and learn practical tools to improve health and wellness.

These programs are mates supporting mates, with a psychologist on call too.

The Banksia Project doesn’t aim to address mental illness and suicide rates directly, rather the Growth Rooms network equips men to be happier and healthier, able to deal with life’s challenges, become more socially connected and lead a life with purpose. This enables prevention of, and recovery from, mental health issues.

A $5,000 donation from 2019’s Taste of Coogee Festival funded the training of 20 new community volunteers, which in turn enabled the launch of ten new Growth Rooms in the community.

“The widespread impact of these programs is phenomenal, compounding and ultimately hard to measure,” says Program Director, Jack Jones.

“However, men from Growth Rooms tell us that it’s become life-changing for them. They’re happier, more resilient and healthier.”

Coogee powerhouse Bec Brown is the founder and managing director of public relations agency The Comms Department, with team in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane but working globally.

Bec represents many well-known brands in the media and corporate world such as iHeartRadio, Bras N Things, hayu, Amazon Prime Video and Australian Radio Network’s KIIS and WSFM. In her down-time, you can often see Bec pounding the pavement around Coogee, which is just as well, as Bec also has exceptional baking skills – the best chocolate brownies in Coogee, if not Sydney! How did this come about Bec? I grew up in the country and my sister and I would bake treats for family and friends with recipes from vintage, ingredient-stained CWA cook-books, handed down from our Grandma. Then 10 years ago when I was a PR at Universal Music, we had an annual record company bake-off and my chocolate brownies were awarded second place by judge (and that year’s Masterchef winner) Julie Goodwin. Rocknroll huh? When I left Universal to set up The Comms Department, the Bec Brown Brownies became our signature gift. I must have baked over 1,000 trays of them over the years.

Part author proceeds will be donated to two charities that support women - Fitted for Work and Life Changing Experiences.

It’s also been beautifully illustrated and reads more like a magazine than a book, so it’s an enjoyable read - Vanessa McCarthy from Tone Studio, another Coogee local, helped to bring the design of the book to life.

Coogee’s favourite local celebrity Amanda Keller a woman of many talents; radio host of the multi award winning radio show in Sydney, WSFM’s Jonesy & Amanda in the Morning (now in its 15th year), television host of several shows on Network Ten, and author just to name a few.

Amanda is often spotted walking her gorgeous pooch ‘Mini’ around the Coogee coastline and she’s been a regular at Taste of Coogee, hosting our very first cocktail event back in 2013 and has been spotted sampling her favourite foods and wines at a few events since.

What’s been your biggest career highlight, besides meeting Barry Manilow?

I have lots of career highlights, but I am so excited by the fact that I have had such a rewarding and fulfilling career and I am still being given new and exciting challenges both on radio and TV. Jonesy & Amanda in the Morning has been on WSFM for 15 years and to have that longevity is a huge achievement in breakfast radio and I love every minute of it. And I am still getting the opportunity with Channel 10 to do fun things with The Living Room and Dancing with the Stars.

I often think of my mum, who had to quit her job when she got married because women couldn’t work in a bank when they were married back then, and it’s remarkable how just one generation later our lives are so different.

I have been able to follow my passion and pursue a career in media and entertainment, have a family and continue to work on interesting and exciting opportunities well into my 50s. I feel incredibly lucky.

Congratulations to you and your husband Harley on recently celebrating 30 years of marriage, and you’ve raised two amazing boys, with a stellar radio and television career. What is the secret to keep it all going?

I’ve learnt over the years to simply not overanalyse the day to day of our relationship. I feel much calmer when I just let life happen and enjoy having Harley by my side. One week we might be cranky at each other but the next week will be great. It all evens out.

Congratulations on an amazing career Amanda, you have a very full workload, what keeps you motivated?

Staying focused on the positives in life and the things you can control. I get up ridiculously early for breakfast radio and if you always give in to ‘feeling terrible’ or ‘feeling tired’ it will take over and sap the joy out of your day. I am better at managing my time and taking care of myself more now that my kids are older, so I will find time to exercise in the afternoon or have a nap if I need one which makes a big difference. I also probably look busier than I am.

We are good together; we are great parents together and we are there for each other. In terms of the secret to keeping in all going? I have no idea!

My work on radio – Jonesy & Amanda on WSFM – is every morning but TV isn’t every day, so I am home for dinner with my family most evenings which is

Gnocchi al Pomodoro

Longevity is rare in the restaurant business, which is where La Spiaggia stands apart. In the same ownership at 248 Coogee Bay Road since 1993, it is Coogee’s oldest Italianowned, Italian-operated restaurant, and one of the longest continually running restaurants in the suburb.

·B ring a pot of well-salted water to the boil.

GNOCCHI INGREDIENTS 1kg Desirée potatoes 300g plain flour 1 egg 50g finely grated parmesan cheese 1 tbsp salt

SUGO DI POMODOR0 E BASILICO (Classic tomato sugo) INGREDIENTS Extra-virgin olive oil 1 small brown onion 1kg Italian peeled tomotoes Salt (to season) Fresh basil leaves, chopped

METHOD · Place unpeeled potatoes in a large pot of salted cold water, ensuring they are completed submerged. Bring to the boil and cook for about 35 minutes, or until completely tender and easily pierced with a fork.

· Place the gnocchi into the boiling water. As soon as they rise to the surface, or vengomo a galla, the gnocchi are cooked. · Add to the tomato sugo immediately.

METHOD · Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. · Finely dice the onion, add to the oil and fry until golden/brown.

· Add the peeled tomatoes and salt and simmer for about an hour., stirring frequently (add water as required if the sauce becomes too thick). · Toss in the chopped basil, simmer for a further 10 minutes. Season to taste. · Add the gnocchi, stir, and serve with shaved or grated parmesan.

Serves 4–6 The key to perfect gnocchi is the ratio of potato to flour – the more flour added, the more chewy the end product. Most people enjoy their gnocchi light and fluffy, so the less flour added the better.

However, adding too little flour can cause the gnocchi to fall apart during boiling. Often, the best way to proceed is to make a single piece of gnocchi and boil it. If it stays together, you’ve got the consistency right.

· Drain and allow to cool just enough that they can be handled and peeled. · Once peeled, finely mash into a large bowl. · Add the flour, egg, salt and parmesan cheese. Gently mix by hand to a soft dough, adding a little extra flour if too sticky. Don’t overwork the dough or the gnocchi will become tough. · Form the dough into a ball and place on a well-floured surface. · Break off a handful and, using both hands, roll into a long narrow rope (about thumb thickness).

· Cut the rope into 2cm-long parcels (these will be your gnocchi pieces). · Using a gnocchi paddle (or the inside of a fork), roll each parcel against your thumb into a gnocchi shape and place on a floured baking tray.

to Oahu in Hawaii, a swim that went for 20 hours - five of which was with this shark. I have a very healthy respect for sharks but never let the Hollywood depiction of them spook me. Sharks live in the ocean and long distance channel swimming can only be done in their ocean. If you have an irrational fear of sharks, then perhaps tennis is the sport for you.

DEAN SUMMERS

Not your average morning dip Newly adopted local legend Dean (Summers) Swimmer is an open water swimming champion. Dean is set to conquer the ‘Oceans Seven’ a series of 7 International swims that test bravery, strength and determination. Dean has completed 6 of the 7, the last one the Tsugaru Strait in Japan, was set to take place in 2020. Dean has even circumnavigated Manhattan Island in New York and a suite of other distance swims but channel swimming is his passion.

Dean is also the National Coordinator of the International Transport Workers Federation, the ITF, who represents and defends the world’s 1.3 million seafarers including the recent Rudy Princess fiasco.

Only a handful of people in the world have completed the ‘Oceans Seven’ and only a few other Australians. What keeps you motived Dean?

I am motivated by the swim squad I train with and that is Vladswim.

The head coach, Vlad Mravec, is a dynamic and inspirational figure who has more than 57 English Channel swimmers in his stable. I’ve been with some of these swimmers for more than six years and we provide each other with support and inspiration along the way. I’m also inspired by others have gone before me and the knowledge that the human body can be pushed further and further with each new generation of swimmers.

We have to mention sharks?

One of the most fascinating experience I’ve had is swimming just above a 14-foot Oceanic whitetip in my swim across from Molokai 30

How is the training going? What is a normal swim for you?

Like almost everything in our normal lives COVID-19 has impacted our sport.

As swimming pools have closed, we have had to break from the monotony of swimming laps but in normal times a training week would be four sessions of 6 kilometres followed by ocean swims on the weekend of up to 20 kilometres.

I’ve taken this time to conduct a bit of maintenance on my shoulder and have enjoyed swimming in Gordons Bay and Coogee at every opportunity.

How are you liking your move to Coogee?

My wife Kylie and I moved to Coogee almost two years ago to be closer to the water and to access the beautiful beach and bays. Not a day goes by when we don’t remind ourselves that we’ve made the right decision particularly in these difficult CV 19 days. The swim around Coogee presents a different experience every single day and the changing weather conditions simply add to the adventure, but it is always wonderful.

There is a group of us who like to swim to the back of Wedding Cake island, to Shark point and back to Coogee quite often swinging into Gordon’s Bay and down to Lurline Bay so we have gotten to know it pretty well.

Wileys is open every day of the year.

But during 2020, the heritagelisted tidal pool in Coogee has been closed for more than 140 days.

Initially the baths were closed in the interests of public health. Then Randwick Council extended the closure with a public works project to plug holes in the pool and add a drain valve and deep-water stairs.

“We’ve made the most of our 140+ days of repairs and maintenance.

While Council works were underway, the Wylie’s Baths Trust undertook additional projects and staff moved into caretaker mode. This included painting, landscaping, cleaning, grant writing, marquee replacement and more,” said Courtney Tallon, of Wileys Baths.

The sea pool and timber decks at Wileys are more than 110 years old. This is the pool’s second global pandemic and fourth round of largescale repairs since it was opened in 1907. Wylie’s and its patrons have weathered many storms together and will weather many more.

The first clubhouse was a wooden shack, built in 1910.

Coogee Surf Club has always been a trailblazer with Australia’s first mass rescue, night surf carnival, major surf carnivals and the development of the resuscitation technique all happening at Coogee.

In 2020 the Club House is undergoing a major redevelopment. In future it will look far more modern than it did in this picture taken by Arthur Ernest Foster from the collections of the State Library of NSW.
