Common Male Fertility Issues and When to Seek Medical Help

Infertility can affect both men and women, and male infertility specifically refers to a condition that interferes with a man's reproductive system and its ability to help conceive a pregnancy. This is why proper fertility evaluation is important when pregnancy does not happen despite regular unprotected intercourse. The evaluation helps identify possible issues affecting sperm, reproductive health or hormone levels and suggests proper fertility treatments.

Signs of Unhealthy Sperm There are no clear physical signs of unhealthy sperm. The major sign is not being able to conceive or have a biological child. Sometimes, male infertility brings emotional weight too, such as feelings of grief, inadequacy, or depression. It is vital to consult a doctor if those feelings show up.

Causes of Male Infertility There are many different causes of male infertility. Often, there could be more than one cause. These include:  Sperm Problems: Low sperm count, abnormal sperm shape or absence of sperm.  Genetic Conditions: Klinefelter syndrome and other genetic disorders.  Medical Conditions: Diabetes, autoimmune disorders and cystic fibrosis.  Infections: Epididymitis, orchitis and certain STIs.  Varicocele: Enlarged veins around the testicles.  Cancer Treatment: Chemotherapy, radiation or testicular surgery.  Testicular Injury: Trauma affecting testicular function.  Hormonal Disorders: Problems involving the hypothalamus or pituitary gland.

When to Seek Medical Help If a couple has been having regular, unprotected sex for a year without success, it is time to seek medical help. An earlier evaluation may be needed if there is testicular pain or swelling, problems with sexual function, or a known history of testicular, hormonal or genetic conditions.
