WELCOME TO CANADA’S OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY RUNNING RED ANGUS BULL SALE In 1898 the Mackenzie Family first registered the V8U Brand after recently settling nearby our current location in the Mountain View District of the Northwest Territories as this was before Alberta had yet become a province. This spring will be the 123rd year that our family will apply this brand. In September of 1962 Rod Jr and Don Mackenzie travelled for the first time to Sheridan, Wyoming to Beckton Stock Farm to bring home what would be the first registered herd of Red Angus cattle in Canada. Through the following pages you will find that the Mackenzie family was instrumental in many “firsts” that would have a lasting influence on the Red Angus breed and the Canadian Beef Industry as a whole for years to come. It brings us much excitement to welcome you to the 50th Annual V8U Ranch Bull Sale to be held in Fort Macleod at the exact same location as it has been hosted since day one. Over the years names and faces have changed, but our commitment and passion for raising premium quality breeding bulls continues. We have several people to acknowledge for our success, but most of all, the commitment of our customer base is something we treasure. We have a long list of repeat customers with some that have multiple generations who have purchased bulls since our first sale. We can’t thank all of you enough for choosing us right from the time you purchased your first Bull from this sale. The most rewarding aspect of raising breeding bulls are the friendships we’ve made with people that we’ve met through our bull selling business. The Bulls this year are a strong set. We continue to expect the Bulls to perform with a strict focus on foot quality and soundness. New for this year, the Bulls have been fed at Stauffer Ranches where they have been fed a high forage diet which exhibits the Bulls ability to perform without sacrificing longevity. Prior to weaning the Bulls were raised on native pasture with no added creep feed at any time. At home every calf on the ranch is weighed within 24 hours of birth. No bull will be sold without successfully passing a breeding soundness exam. We have a strict culling program where only the best are able survive or be consigned to the Bull Sale. The cowherd is mostly comprised of home raised females. We do not sell

the top end of our heifer pen to other breeders. These are kept as these females are best adapted to the ranch conditions where we expect them to work in, as well as show the true genetic advancement that we are making. Our cowherd including the Bull calves are all handled horseback and walked through regularly on foot. At Stauffer`s they are rode through and walked through daily. We are happy once again with the temperament of the whole pen. A $50.00 Discount will be applied off invoice for all bulls going to their new home on sale day. All remaining bulls will return to V8U Ranch and be delivered to your door within 300km of the sale site at our convenience. Once sold all Bulls become the responsibility of the purchaser, therefore we recommend insurance if you would like your new bull to return to the ranch to be delivered at a later date. If you would like your bull to be delivered further than 300km from the sale site, please contact us ahead of time to discuss a possible cost shared arrangement. V8U MACK ENZIE story the

The Mackenzie Family homesteaded in the Mountain View district of the Northwest Territories June 1, 1898. In the same year the V8U Brand was registered. Rod Sr.’s parents arrived from Scotland six years earlier by way of Oregon and Idaho. The Mackenzie’s started out in the early years with Shorthorn cattle. In the early 60’s after winter challenges led to sunburned udders, it was decided to start a crossbreeding program. With this strategy they wanted to maintain easy keeping females, dehorn the calves and add some size into the herd. At about this same time

Rod Sr. made the decision to let the boys take over the operation. He said I don’t care what you do, but keep the RED color! In September 1962 Rod Jr. and Don travelled to Sheridan, Wyoming to attend the Beckton Stock Farm production sale. On behalf of the Mackenzie Brothers they returned home with a bull, a cow-calf pair, and two heifers. These were to become the first Registered Red Angus herd in Canada. This was only the beginning of what would become a successful endeavor for Rod Jr., Ted, Mark, Don, Ken & their families. In the fall of 1968 the Canadian Aberdeen Angus Association opened their herd book to include the Red Hided Angus cattle. The following spring the first Canadian Registered Red Angus sold at the Calgary Bull sale exhibited by Mark Mackenzie. In 1970 the Mackenzie Bros. assembled a string of show cattle in which they travelled to various fairs across Canada. They travelled to the PNE in Vancouver, as well as a trip travelled by railcar to exhibit their Red Angus at the Royal Winter Fair, in Toronto. Mackenzie Bros. exhibited at the first ever 1971 Agribition in Regina. The Highly decorated Red Cheroviann 13A was exhibited during these days where she was 17 times champion female shown against all Aberdeen Angus at the time. Red Stormalong 3A was exhibited at the 1971 prestigious Calgary Spring Bull Show and Sale where he became Grand Champion over all Aberdeen Angus Bulls and set a high selling record at the time selling for $7200. He was sold at the sale by good friend and Auctioneer Ken Hurlburt who was also instrumental along with his son Brant in the marketing of Mackenzie Cattle over the years. The first production sale of Red Angus was held by Mackenzie’s in 1972 where 56 lots were offered and sold well. This included Red Mac Larkabelang 24B, the high Seller at $4200 for ½ interest to Glen Elliott. Breeding Females were also included at the first sale with females selling to breeders still in operation today including the Sibbald Family (SSS Red Angus/ Compass Ranch) & the

Rodgers Family (Rodgers Red Angus). This has led to a 50 year history of uninterrupted Bull Sales of which everyone has been held at the same location in Fort Macleod. For several years a separate female sale was held at the Ranch which had became a two day event as it included a golf tournament. The Red Roundup Sale has been considered the elite Red Angus consignment sale in Canada, commencing in 1973. Red Mac Cherok 28D was the High Selling Animal at the First ever Red Roundup event. She sold as a bred heifer for $3500. Mackenzie’s were also the volume buyers at this initial sale taking home 10 head. In 1975 a Mackenzie heifer calf was chosen to start a donation fund for Red Angus promotional purposes. Show-ring competition was continued with much success as a means of promotion by the Mackenzie’s for several years making this a family affair with future generations. There have been many changes in the Mackenzie operation over the years. From the very start the brothers operated as Mackenzie Bros Red Angus, but all owned their own cattle. In 1975 Rod Jr became the recipient of the first Western Canada Liver Transplant from which after a courageous effort passed away in May of 1976. He was later followed by Rod Sr. in October of the same year. As the families have grown, further changes were to come. In 2000 Mark & Bryan made the decision to host their own standalone Bull Sale as Brylor Ranch. 2008 saw another change after living near Manning, AB Ken Mackenzie chose to start selling his bulls closer to where his family now operates. In 2015 Ted’s son’s Ed & Randy opted to disperse their Purebred herd, and therefore this was the last Bull Sale where they were actively involved. In 2015 to better position ourselves for the future we chose to operate under the name V8U Ranch Ltd. Continuing to use the same brand that the Mackenzie family first registered in 1898. At this time Jade & Steve Brander took over the management of the day to day operations of the Ranch and Bull Sale. Don and Linda are still actively involved on the Ranch. Their other daughter Amber with

her husband Dave and their two sons Max, and Griffin although not actively involved make a point to visit as often as possible. The Mackenzie Red Angus operations had contributions from several family members to promote the breed. In their younger years Ed & Randy Mackenzie would join their uncle Rod & Don on the show circuit. Carol Mackenzie was the first Canadian Red Angus Queen. Jade owned her first Red Angus heifer the day she was born. Don Served on the board of the Canadian Angus Association during 1978-80 and more recently served as president of both the Canadian Angus Association and the Canadian Beef Breeds Council. Jade served on the Alberta Angus Board of directors for a period of 6 years. In 1979 the Mackenzie family were the first Canadians to receive the “Pioneer Breeder Award” by the Red Angus Association of America. Mackenzie Brothers were honored by the Red Angus Association of America in 2004 as being one of the “50 Most Influential” Red Angus Breeders and are the only Canadian breeder to receive this honor. In 2007 we were inducted into the Alberta Angus Hall of Fame. 50 years of doing anything is a significant milestone. Our operation has survived winter storms, droughts, fires, BSE, & government policies. We are rewarded by the fact that our family has contributed to the advancement of the Red Angus Breed in Canada. We are thankful to other breeders for their efforts to help make the Red Angus Breed what it is today. The greatest achievements are the friendships we’ve developed and the passion that we continue to have to raise high quality cattle that work in the environment that they are intended for.

A 50 Year History doing business with the Fort Macleod Auction Market Every Bull sale that we have hosted has been conducted on site at the Fort Macleod Auction Market. In the early days the Mackenzie’s would trail their cattle for sale to Community Auction Sales just north of the ranch across the Belly River at Parkbend. Here they would be sold and loaded up on rail cars. Ken Hurlburt started selling cattle for the Mackenzie’s at Parkbend. In 1960 Ken opened the Fort Macleod Auction Market. In May of 1972 the Mackenzie brothers held their first production sale which was also the first production style sale to be held at the Fort Macleod Facility. At the 1971 Calgary Spring Bull Sale, the record high selling Grand Champion Red Stormalong 3A was also sold by Ken. Another connection that Ken had to the Mackenzie’s and the Red Angus Business was that he sold at the first few Red Roundup Red Angus Sales which have also become a regular tradition. Ken’s son Brant who would later take over

the business, was also an Auctioneer and sold the Bull sale up until 2012. The Mackenzie’s and the Hurlburt’s have been close friends for many years. Although not involved in quite the same extent as he once was, it was Brant who was on the stand and sold our commercial feeder calves this past fall. The Hurlburt family have been true leaders in the Livestock Auction business for many years. In more recent years ownership has changed in the Fort Macleod Market now known as Southern Alberta Livestock Exchange (S.A.L.E.). Headed up by Allan Lively they have advanced the business by running the largest collection of feeder cattle to sell in Canada through their fall video calf sale. Since 2013 Frank Jenkins has been working as the Auctioneer who sells our Bulls assisted by Justin Keeley, Darren Shaw, & Ryan Konynenbelt as ring men. Frank ranches nearby and also has ties back to Community Auction Sales at Parkbend through his father Bud Jenkins who worked doing quite a bit of the sorting in those days. Darren Shaw has been working the sale since 2003, later joined by Jus-

tin Keeley in 2009. Ryan worked the sale for the first time last year and we can say that he is the hardest working young man in the Auction business. Alyss Doyle and Ramona Hart have been working behind the scenes clerking and running the settlement desk. Over the years faces have changed, but our experience with this business regardless of ownership or management has been second to none. These are pleasant, credible, hardworking people who share our values of honesty and integrity. They have always been a true pleasure to do business with, for both ourselves and our customers. Obviously there have been some changes we have seen in how business transactions are completed in the last year. We chose Thunder to add some frame size and growth to some of our more moderate cows. Thunder was the high selling Bull at the Westphal Red Angus Bull sale in 2017. He has proven to be an outstanding herd bull.

We absolutely love this Bull. He darkens hide colour to a dark cherry red. He is also a curve bending sire ranked in the top 3% for calving ease, top 7% for BW with WW and YW EPD’s both ranking in the top 10%. We are calving our first Bourne Sired heifers this year and we are super excited with how great they truly are. He is proving to be a tremendous “female maker”. HEALTH AND SAFETY We are appreciative that the cattle business is an essential service. Considering this, we take the safety of our valued customers and all sale staff very seriously. The Bull sale is going ahead at S.A.L.E. in Fort Macleod, and we will accommodate our customer’s needs to acquire bulls for this year’s breeding season in as seamless of a manner as possible. As we have become accustomed to over the last several months, AHS restrictions change quickly. Therefore at the time of print we cannot predict the rules that will be set forth on March 20. As a responsible business we will comply with all rules set forth by AHS as well as seek guidance from the Livestock Markets Assoc. of Canada. We will provide updates closer to sale time in the News page at v8uranch.com.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS TERMS - The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable at par at Fort Macleod, Alta. The right of property shall not pass until settlement is made. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before any cattle will be released. BIDS - Every animal entering the sale ring will be sold to the highest bidder A floor price will apply to each animal consigned. DISPUTES - In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final. PURCHASER’S RISK - Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold.

ANNOUNCEMENTS - Errors discovered in the catalogue will be corrected by announcements from the Auction Stand at sale time and such corrections will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue.

CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY - A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer for each animal after settlement is made.

The Bulls are available for appraisal at Stauffer Ranches from now until March 16. They will be moved during the afternoon of March 17 to S.A.L.E. for viewing in outdoor pens where we will be on site to answer any questions up until sale time.

SHIPPING - Assistance will be given in making shipment after the sale, but no risk is assumed by the Fort Macleod Auction Market Ltd., or the seller. Expenses incurred are the responsibility of the purchaser. Purchasers are requested to furnish shipping instructions when making settlement. Any additional expenses are the responsibility of the buyer, including duty, brokerage fees, etc.

The Sale will be broadcast online through dlms.ca where bidding can be done from the comfort of your home. You will need to set up an account and pre-register to bid ahead of sale time.

BREEDER’S GUARANTEE - V8U Ranch Ltd. have done everything possible to assure you, the buyer, that every bull in this sale will be a breeder. A certified veterinarian will have semen tested and physically evaluated every bull. In the unlikely event of a dispute, regular terms & conditions standard with the Canadian Angus Association shall apply.

Either we or the trustworthy staff at S.A.L.E. are available to purchase a bull on your behalf or bid for you over the phone. Please contact us ahead of time to make these arrangements. If semen is marketed by the purchaser, V8U Ranch Ltd. receives one half royalty interest on gross semen sales, and the purchaser one half interest. The purchaser retains full possession, full pasture use rights, and full salvage value in these bulls. Genomically Enhanced EPD’s Explained One thing that we continue to learn as we operate is that there are things that are out of our control. We also are reminded that mistakes are costly. We hear several breeders who continue to express discontent with EPD’s. We feel much differently, and have put great emphasis into EPD’s. We have gone one step further and invested in Genomic testing in all our retained Bull and Heifer calves since 2015. This is an investment that we have made to improve accuracy of EPD’s. With Genomically enhanced EPD’s we can have much more confidence in what to expect from the progeny that a sire will produce. This also gives you as a buyer, more reliable information which in turn gives you more control and aids to reduce costly mistakes. With several generations of data collected, visual evaluation although still very important cannot be the only trait used to select one of the most important purchase decisions in a cow calf operation. We suspect that we are not alone in saying that we have at times invested in cattle that appeared to be outstanding, but just didn’t turn out as expected. With the use of Genomically Enhanced EPD’s. This should minimize the disappointment. Normally when EPD’s are calculated, there is a calculation made based on the production of the sire and the dam. Although the resulting progeny share parentage these animals are not identical. If the sire and

the dam were the same for two calves born in the same year the resulting epd’s of those two calves would be identical until they begin to have progeny of their own. By using genomic testing we get predictions from the animal’s DNA which will move the EPD’s either up or down based on the genetic makeup. This does not artificially improve the actual EPD value, but instead improves the accuracy. An animal that undergoes Genomic testing has as much potential to have their EPD’s negatively affected as they do to have a positive response. A good example of the impact of GE EPD’s are lot 100, 102, & 108. These three bulls are full brothers from an ET Mating. Normally their EPD value would be identical for each trait. However, because we utilized Genomic testing you can see that their EPD’s are showing some differences to better indicate what to expect for progeny from each individual. This has even gone as far as to indicate that one of the three could be used on heifers where the other two would not. In saying this, we are not removed from the commercial cattle business. Cattle are purchased every day based on visual appraisal alone. Wouldn’t it be nice to have more information when selecting a pen of replacement heifer calves with data to show that they will milk, or have the ability to breed

back year after year? It would also be ideal to purchase a pen of feeder cattle and have data to show that their performance, or grading potential is above average. Unfortunately these are tools that are not available as a rule. Luckily this is available to the seed stock industry, and we feel it is to our advantage to utilize it ourselves and provide the information to you to improve confidence in your purchase decisions. Another advantage of V8U Ranch incorporating Genomics testing is that we also utilize parentage testing. Every bull available on sale day has been “Sire Verified”. Better yet, all bulls raised by cows who were born since 2015 have been “Parent Verified”. Meaning that they have been confirmed by DNA as being progeny of both the sire and the dam. This also gives us confidence that the cattle that we raise and sell are exactly what we say they are. We like to conduct business with honesty and integrity. We feel that by incorporating this technology that this emphasises our values.
