WELCOME TO CANADA’S OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY RUNNING RED ANGUS BULL SALE The 2020 edition of the V8U Ranch Bull sale will be our 49th annual. We want to express our sincere gratitude to all those who have contributed to where we are today. To all the many purchasers who continue to return year after year, as well as those who assist to put on such an event annually. This year we will wish Farewell to Don Heggie Simmentals as he has chosen to reduce his workload and instead of joining us in Fort Macleod he will sell a few bulls from home. Don has been a part of the V8U Ranch and formerly Mackenzie Red Angus Bull sale for 17 Years. We would like to thank Don for all of the contributions that he and his family have provided to our sale for so many years. 2019 was a year of change. For many parts of Western Canada the smoke has cleared, and the majority of the west had seen some timely rains as well as some abundant fall moisture. This should hopefully have us all set up for a good start to the 2020 growing season. Even with a few speed bumps like fake meat, and some challenges with trading partners the outlook for the Beef Industry is positive. Demand for Beef is showing continued strength, which has spurred on Feedyard Expansion in Western Canada. Whether you are marketing feeder cattle, slaughter cattle or replacement females, an investment in good quality genetics always pays in the long run. No matter how many cows you run, the bulls you are using are contributing to 50% of your annual income. An investment in a better bull is not an expense it is an investment. There have not been many changes in how we operate at V8U Ranch. Other than calving a bit earlier than many of you, we continue to run our cows under true ranch conditions. We graze our cows for as long into the winter as possible, and we choose not to creep feed any calves. We have a very strict culling program. Our cows are strictly screened for udder quality, foot and leg structure, temperament, and fertility. No cow gets a free ride, no matter how good of a calf she raised last year. Our replacements are selected from the top of our heifer calves. We do not sell our front end females to other breeders. We use the same culling program for our herd sires. If we have a bull that doesn’t turn out they are disposed of quickly, no matter how much we invested in them. Our cow herd is on a good mineral program, as well as a good herd health program. We strive to do business with integrity and honesty. And we truly appreciate every customer who purchases a bull from us. Once again we are extremely satisfied with the uniformity of the bulls that we have raised this year. The bulls have been fed again by Glen and Kelly Hall near Stavely. They run a first class operation where the bulls are well
cared for. The bulls are developed responsibly to exhibit performance while keeping longevity as a priority. At home all of our purebred calves are weighed within 24 hours of birth. The bulls are regularly worked horseback, and walked through on foot. By the time that every V8U Bull walks through the sale ring in Fort Macleod, he has truly made “the cut”. No bull will sell through the ring without passing a semen evaluation and are fully guaranteed. We have introduced a couple of new herd sires for this year. We are extremely excited about Red VGW Bourne. He was our pick from the from the high selling sire group at the Westphal Red Angus Bull Sale in 2018. Another new Bull is Red Rod Rawhide. He was the high selling bull at the 2018 Rodgers Red Angus Bull sale. These bulls have exceeded expectations. A new AI Sire that we utilized with some limited use was Red PFFR Convoy. There aren’t many of these available in Canada, but the bulls in this sire group are outstanding. A $50.00 Discount will be applied off invoice for all bulls leaving the market on Sale Day. All other Bulls will return to V8U Ranch and be delivered to your door within 300km of the sale site at our convenience. Once sold all Bulls become the responsibility of the purchaser. We recommend insurance if you would like your new bull to return to the ranch to be delivered later. If you would like your bull delivered further than 300km from the sale site, please contact us ahead of the sale to discuss possible arrangements. It is a privilege to work with the staff at Southern Alberta Livestock Exchange. Frank Jenkins, Justin Keely, and Darren Shaw are our sale staff. They are also ranchers with a lifetime of experience. Please feel free to contact them with questions about the bulls or if you would like them to purchase a bull on your behalf. Alyss Doyle, and Ramona Hart will help with settlement. These ladies are truly pleasant to work with. Please join us for lunch ahead of the sale on March 21, and stay around afterwards for refreshments and to take in the culturally social aspect of our business that few other industries can replicate.

WW: Indicates the ability of a sire’s calves to grow from birth to weaning (expressed in pounds). YW:
Growth from birth to yearling (expressed in pounds)
Milk: A reflection of the milking ability of a bull’s daughters. It compares the difference in gain between birth to weaning of a bull’s daughter’s calves compared to the calves from daughters of other sires evaluated. TM:
Calculated by using 1/2 WW + Milk. Predicts weaning weight on a bull’s daughter’s calves. CE: the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first calf heifers. FAT: Expressed in inches, predicts the comparative depth of back fat over the 12th rib in the average calf. REA: Expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Genomically Enhanced EPD’s Explained One thing that we continue to learn as we operate is that there are things that are out of our control. We also are reminded that mistakes are costly. We hear several breeders who continue to express discontent with EPD’s. We feel much differently, and have put great emphasis into EPD’s. We have gone one step further and invested in Genomic testing in all our retained Bull and Heifer calves since 2015. This is an investment that we have made to improve accuracy of EPD’s. With Genomically enhanced EPD’s we can have much more confidence in what to expect from the progeny that a sire will produce. This also gives you as a buyer, more reliable information which in turn gives you more control and aids to reduce costly mistakes. With several generations of data collected, visual evaluation although still very important cannot be the only trait used to select one of the most important purchase decisions in a cow calf operation. We suspect that we are not alone in saying that we have at times invested in cattle that appeared to be outstanding, but just didn’t turn out as expected. With the use of Genomically Enhanced EPD’s. This should minimize the disappointment. Normally when EPD’s are calculated there is a calculation made based on the production of the sire and the
6
dam. Although the resulting progeny share parentage these animals are not identical. If the sire and the dam were the same for two calves born in the same year the resulting epd’s of those two calves would be identical until they begin to have progeny of their own. By using genomic testing we get predictions from the animal’s DNA which will move the EPD’s either up or down based on the genetic makeup. This does not artificially improve the actual EPD value, but instead improves the accuracy. An animal that undergoes DNA testing has as much potential to have their EPD’s negatively affected as they do to have a positive response. A good example of the impact of GE EPD’s are lot 107 & 108. These two bulls are actually twins from the same Sire and Dam. Normally their EPD value would be identical for each trait. However, because we utilized Genomic testing you can see that their EPD’s are not the same. In saying this, we are not removed from the commercial cattle business. Cattle are purchased every day based on visual appraisal alone. Wouldn’t it be nice to have more information when selecting a pen of replacement heifer calves with data to show that they will milk, or have the ability to breed
| V8U Ranch Ltd Red Angus Bull Sale 2020
back year after year? It would also be ideal to purchase a pen of feeder cattle and have data to show that their performance, or grading potential is above average. Unfortunately these are tools that are not available as a rule. Luckily this is available to the seed stock industry, and we feel it is to our advantage to utilize it ourselves and provide the information to you to aid in your purchase decisions. Another advantage of V8U Ranch incorporating Genomics testing is that we also utilize parentage testing. Every bull available on sale day has been “Sire Verified”. Better yet, all bulls raised by cows who were born since 2015 have been “Parent Verified”. Meaning that they have been confirmed by DNA as being progeny of both the sire and the dam. This also gives us confidence that the cattle that we raise and sell are exactly what we say they are. We like to conduct business with honesty and integrity. We feel that by incorporating this technology that this emphasizes our values. If you have any questions about EPD’s or Genomics testing please give Steve a call and he would be happy to discuss this further.

We suspect that there will be some catalogues that have several check marks and circles around this son of the Desperado Bull. He is larger framed, soggy made, long bodied yet maintains a stylish front end. He had the 2nd heaviest WW of the Bulls this year and the 3rd heaviest YW. Ranks in the top 2% for WW, top 1% for YW, and also has some good carcass weight and marbling EPD’s. His mother 7A is an outstanding cow who has raised some bulls for some cattlemen who always find the good ones.

Murray Mclean 1954-2019
On March 21 in Fort Macleod there will be a seat left empty by our good friend Murray Mclean. We were deeply saddened to hear the news from Norma this past summer of the loss of Murray in a tragic accident. We thoroughly enjoyed the time we had to spend with Murray and were totally impressed with the great cow herd that he had developed over the years. We have thought many times about Murray, Norma and Family over the last several months and wish Norma and the rest of the family our very best through these difficult times.
