WELCOME TO CANADA’S OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY RUNNING RED ANGUS BULL SALE 2018 was a year for the history books. Severe cold and heavy snowfall made for a calving season that was difficult to endure for all of us. This followed by a hot dry summer which left everyone scrambling to find feed as they used any available carryover to get through the previous winter. What sets cattle producers apart from other businesses is our resilience to get through the bad days and enjoy the good. Spring branding pens were filled with laughter and smiles as neighbors got together still showing the pride they have in the calves they raised and the way of life our business offers. Those looking from the outside would be unaware of the challenges most of those people had endured through the previous months. There is a certain satisfaction of being able to survive tough conditions and be stronger because of it. Once again you could see happiness as Ranchers marketed their calves through this past fall. Market conditions were fair overall. Unique differences that our industry offers that others do not are Branding’s and Bull Sales. These are social functions that allow us to gather to discuss our common interests. It is hard to imagine if even in other sectors of Agricultural Production are there the same rewards. Does a Farmer who produces Cereal Crops experience the same satisfaction when they load a truck with this year’s production as a Rancher who loads a truck with the calves that they raised? What other industry do you see entire families who pull their kids out of school and dress up in their best to head to market their years work or to purchase their next opportunity? Even with the challenges we have faced in the last year, it would be hard to imagine doing anything different. Welcome to the 48th annual V8U Ranch Bull Sale. Please be our guest at Southern Alberta Livestock Exchange in Fort Macleod on March 16. Thank you to everyone who have supported us over the last 48 years. We greatly appreciate that you consider us when you select genetics for the future of your operations. Don Heggie will be joining us again this year with his offering of Simmental Bulls. You will notice as you review the catalogue that we have incorporated some new Herd Sires. To find these we have put on a ton of miles both through the summer months looking at cow herds as well as evaluating our selections in person at the Bull Sales that they came from. We have studied hundreds of Bull Sale and Semen Catalogues to find the Bulls that we are using. We understand that the selections we make effect outcomes for our customers. When we are choosing these Bulls, we are not only considering our interest, but also yours. Our commitment is to find the best possible genetics that not only produce the quality that you demand but also limit any undesirable traits.
We have seen in person every Bull that we have walking our pastures before we have purchased them. For most of them, we have also seen their Sire and Dam to ensure foot and udder quality are to our satisfaction. We are pleased with the Bulls that we have on offer this year. Our goals are being accomplished as this is the most uniform set of Bulls that we have raised to date. There is a good selection of heifer bulls, as well as some who will offer some higher performance. We have provided data with improved reliability with the use of i50K genomics testing. No bulls will sell through the ring without passing a semen evaluation and are all fully guaranteed. Bulls are not Creep Fed. We feel that creep feed is an artificial representative of performance and sacrifices longevity. At home the Bulls are primarily worked horseback and walked through regularly on foot. While at home Don inspects the Bulls almost daily on his ATV. We are very happy with the temperament of the bulls. At Hall’s they are walked through and handled regularly. A $50.00 discount will be applied off invoice for all bulls leaving the market on sale day. All other bulls will return to V8U Ranch and be delivered to your door within 300km of the sale site at our convenience. Once sold all bulls become the responsibility of the purchaser. We recommend insurance if you would like your new bull to return to the ranch to be delivered later. If you would like your bull delivered further than 300km from the sale site, please contact us ahead of the sale to discuss possible arrangements. Desperado was the high selling bull at the Red Rock Red Angus Bull Sale in 2017. He is a sire that we acquired to bring us totally new genetics. He is easy fleshing, and is an extremely aggressive breeder. The group of bulls sired by Desperado in the sale this year definitely stand out.

In the summer of 2016 we toured the Westphal Red Angus herd at Grass Range Montana and came across Thunder on dry pasture conditions at the side of his mother. 654 caught our eye first and shortly after we found and fell in love with his outstanding mother. We chose Thunder to add some frame size and growth to some of our more moderate cows. Thunder was the high selling Bull at the Westphal Red Angus Bull sale in 2017. He has been worth the investment, with this being the first set of calves on offer. They are a very solid sire group.

In 1962 Don and brother Rod purchased the first Red Angus cattle that were to be brought to Canada on behalf of the Mackenzie Brothers. In 2016, 54 years after the initial purchase we returned to Beckton Stock Farm in Sheridan Wyoming to purchase New Era. We pursued New Era to bring some calving ease and to use on some larger framed cows to moderate frame size. His first daughters are calving this year with beautiful udders and are great mothers.

The Tradin Right Bull has done exactly what we expected. He sired our high selling bull in 2017 to Lauron Red Angus. i50K Genomics Testing?
In the Fall of 2015 we began investing in the use of i50K Genomics Testing. Every Angus Bull in this year’s Bull sale as well as every purebred Replacement female we have retained have undergone the use of this technology. What does this mean to you as a purchaser of our offering? First of all this ensures Sire Verification of every Bull. This eliminates any possible Sire error. Another benefit to you is an improvement in the accuracy of the EPD’s on all of our Bulls. Traditionally the Canadian Angus Association takes averages of both parents of each calf, they then calculate the EPD’s on each animal. What i50K does is takes genomic markers collected through DNA and blends this with EPD’s

to achieve Genomically Enhanced EPD’s. This gives us much more accurate information. When you purchase a Bull that has not been tested you are relying on EPD averages that both his parents have produced. When looking at an i50K Tested Bull the Genomically Enhanced EPD’s are as accurate as though the Bull you are purchasing has sired 20 calves depending on the trait. This obviously doesn’t tell us everything about the Bull, but gives us similar information of what we might see from the first set of calves they have sired. Although EPD’s have been a very valuable tool in the past, the use of i50K offers added confidence in purchasing decisions. This technology is not some gimmick to

make our Bulls look better than normal. For every Bull in the sale that experienced a positive impact on their EPD’s another Bull had a negative impact. We have invested in this technology simply to provide you the most accurate and reliable information available on all of the Bulls in our offering. For example when we recommend a bull as a heifer bull, we are much more confident as we have both the parent averages along with a genomic evaluation to support it. TERMS & CONDITIONS TERMS - The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable at par at Fort Macleod, Alta. The right of property shall not pass until settlement is made. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before any cattle will be released.
BUYERS BUYERS NOTES
BIDS - Every animal entering the sale ring will be sold to the highest bidder A floor price will apply to each animal consigned. DISPUTES - In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final. PURCHASER’S RISK - Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. ANNOUNCEMENTS - Errors discovered in the catalogue will be corrected by announcements from the Auction Stand at sale time and such corrections will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY - A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer for each animal after settlement is made. SHIPPING - Assistance will be given in making shipment after the sale, but no risk is assumed by the Fort Macleod Auction Market Ltd., or the seller. Expenses incurred are the responsibility of the purchaser. Purchasers are requested to furnish shipping instructions when making settlement. Any additional expenses are the responsibility of the buyer, including duty, brokerage fees, etc. BREEDER’S GUARANTEE - V8U Ranch Ltd. have done everything possible to assure you, the buyer, that every bull in this sale will be a breeder. A certified veterinarian will have semen tested and physically evaluated every bull. In the unlikely event of a dispute, regular terms & conditions standard with the Canadian Angus Association shall apply. RETAINED INTERESTS - Buyer receives full possession and one half semen interest in all bulls in the catalog. V8U Ranch Ltd. retains one half semen interest. If semen is marketed by the purchaser, V8U Ranch Ltd. receives one half royalty interest on gross semen sales, and the purchaser one half interest. The purchaser retains full possession, full pasture use rights, and full salvage value in these bulls.
