WELCOME TO THE 6th ANNUAL ULRICH HEREFORD RANCH BULL SALE! We invite you to join us at Balog Auction in Lethbridge this Family Day, Feb 20th! Bring your family and join ours for lunch and a visit before the sale. We are pleased to offer another group of industry-building bulls from our program “Specializing in Light Birthweights with Great Performance, from Remarkable Cows!” We moved the 2011 Spring calving season to March 1st and ran the Fall calving for a couple of months beginning in September. This was the perfect summer for us - wonderful spring moisture for the grass, and July dried up just in time to cure the hay crops. The barley crops were heavier than other years, taking less acres to build the silage pile... Our bulls grow up the natural way – on Mama’s milk and pasture. The babies won’t find any creep feeders here... We let genetics do the job! The yearlings spend all summer on grass, and then in fall the bulls are fed a high roughage diet consisting of hay, barley silage and Landmark Feeds “Bull’s Eye” Backgrounding pellets designed for growing animals and can be tailored to meet individual producer needs.

We have chosen to follow a non-medicated program so what you see are solid genetic traits coming through in our growth. These youngsters are just grown out, not pushed, to ensure they’re ready for spring pasture duty. No special treatment here – they run together as one group – growing up honest – ready to work for you! • No creep feed! • No feet trimmed! • No hormones or medicated feed! • Backgrounded, not pushed! All bulls are semen tested, so those results, scrotal measurements and current weights will be available at the sale. Once again, the catalogue includes the top EPD percentiles to demonstrate how our animals rank within the Hereford breed. We faithfully report performance & ultrasound data and are pleased when the EPDs reflect the strengths of our program. We look forward to seeing you Sale Day! Sincerely, Peter Ulrich, Hans & Annette Ulrich

expected Progeny Differences (ePDs) are genetic predictions producers can use when making selection decisions. These values are available on performance animals from breed associations. It is important to understand you cannot compare EPDs between breeds, only within a breed. A buyer is always advised to use more than just the EPDs regardless of accuracy when making purchase decisions.

EPDs from Hereford animals are directly comparable to other Herefords in North America and parts of South America, due to the inclusion of data from Canada, United States, Uruguay & Argentina. An Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) is a measure of the genetic merit of an animal using relevant performance and pedigree information. EPDs are expressed in the units of measure. For example, birth weight is expressed in pounds, and rib-eye area is expressed in square inches. EPDs come from performance data. Producers submit data on their cattle. From this data, researchers look at the differences between animals raised in the same environment (contemporary groups) and ascertain the portion of that difference that is due to genetics (heritability). Also included in this is how the different traits relate to each other and interact together (correlations). They can then directly compare genetic differences among animals using the pedigree information contained in the CHA and AHA registries. The result is a value that can be directly compared between animals and across environments, an EPD. Calving ease ePD (Ce) - calculated using birth weight and calving ease score information. Calving ease EPDs represent the ease with which progeny of an animal are born to first calf heifers. The EPD is expressed as a percent probability, with a higher value representing calves with a higher probability of being born unassisted. Birth Weight ePD (BW) - is an indicator of calving ease. Higher birth weight EPDs usually indicates more calving difficulty. Weaning Weight ePD (WW) - reflects progeny growth differences up to 205-days Yearling Weight ePD (YW) - reflects progeny growth differences through to 365-days. milk ePD (milk) - indicates the ability of a sire’s daughters to provide their calves with an environment that encourages growth from birth to weaning, through mothering ability and milk production. This EPD is expressed in the expected difference in pounds of calf at weaning. Total maternal ePD (Tm) - also known as Milk + Growth, this EPD combines the milk EPD plus 1/2 the Weaning Weight EPD. It is expressed in pounds of calf weaned at 205-Days and combines the genetics for preweaning growth and the influence of the maternal environment on the weaning weight of the daughter’s progeny. maternal Calving ease ePD (mCe) - represents the ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first calf heifers, when compared to daughters of other sires. The EPD is expressed as a percent probability, with a higher value representing daughters with a higher probability of unassisted calving. Breed Avg. Looking for great carcass? 49X is above average in both REA & Marbling and a BW of only 82 lbs to boot. Combine this with above average Weaning weight – what a great accomplishment for this 80T dam. 80T’s sire was sold in our first sale to Wade & Laurie Bertram , of Piapot, SK and in 2010, the Bertram’s added a 2nd Ulrich bull (29U) to their purebred herd. Thank you again, and all the best with both bulls.

Windy Ridge Ultrasound Inc. has been working with Peter and his family for many years. Throughout these years Peter has shown a keen interest in his cattle carcasses and how he can improve them. Every year Peter seems to get a little closer to his goals with carcasses without sacrificing those other important traits like calving ease, weaning weights, yearling weights, etc. I would think that the calves sired by these bulls would work very well for back grounding, in the feedlot, and for those popular Hereford cross females.

39.1

Born June 25th, 148X is another impressive individual from 17H, the impeccable mother who produces incredible calves no matter who she is bred to, even as she ages (born ’98). This time, the popular 705 had the sire honours! 148X is deep, long, thick and of course eye-appealing. Her sons 44K, 114L, & 70N were all herd sires we used and shared with other purebred breeders. Examples of others who purchased sons were Brad Griffin, of Okotoks area (14S), and Bob Truthwaite of Hodgson, MB (604S). 17H daughters have also been a huge success in our herd.
