Big changes around Brylor Ranch in 2012! Deloy turned 13 this summer... Sherry and I are not sure we are ready yet to be parents of a “teenager”! We’re getting a steer for him this fall to be in 4-H. Erica has been involved with Silver Reins 4-H Club and has won several red ribbons in several different horse shows with her Welsh mare, Merry Legs. Rowan will be starting pre-school in September and Isabella has scars on her forehead from the effects of being the youngest child of 4!! Lots of camping with the kids and swimming and baseball and weddings. Congratulations to Ryan & Cassie Dorran on their big day - I particularly liked Steve Dorran’s speech when he thanked Cassie for saying “yes” to Ryan’s proposal... twice! Also our “oldest daughter”, Katie Leys is now married to Jordan Deeg. Sherry and I were very honored to be asked to emcee their special day. We liked how Katie’s dad, Bryan & Sherry Mackenzie Allan, and Jordan’s dad, Roger, both acknowledged us and how much Katie has meant to us over the years. And I think it’s all good how Roger referred to me as the “Spiritual Leader” of the Red Angus movement in Canada! More news on the cattle front now, though... we bought the entire Get-A-Long cow herd, 130 in all - cows, bred heifers and heifer calves. Dennis & Shelly will have one last group of bull calves to sell in 2013. The cows with heifer calves and the bred heifers arrived at Brylor Ranch in late May. That was a pretty neat day around here but I am sure it was a little tough on the people in Wetaskiwin. Dennis and Shelly, you can both be very proud of your herd of cows you put together over the last 35 years. I know Sherry and I and the kids are very happy to have them! They will be a welcome addition to our existing cowherd. We’ll be calving 275 head out now in January/February and May/June - half and half. We’ve already had lots of traffic to come view these “new”cows. All of the “Y” Get-A-Long bred heifers are in the sale today, none held back. We felt it would be a fitting tribute to Dennis and his wife and their program to offer all this age group as it will be the last time ever to buy a female with the GAL prefix again in volume of this sort. It’s kind of like a Hayshaker in Fort Macleod... except I own these females now and will offer them to you on September 29th. I can’t let them all go, so some will be paired lots - buyer’s first choice and we retain the other. We also offer in this sale the last 50+ bred heifers from Rick & Deb Cones of Erica, Deloy, Isabella & Rowan Ringstead Ranch. They have been breeding these cattle since 1993 and have amassed a group second to none as well. All were A.I.’ed once and now sell safe in calf to that mating or they are not here. I remember when this “new guy” came to our “Tradition With A Vision” in 1997 and bought five bred heifers that day ... all at the top end of the sale. Come to Fort Macleod Auction on September 29th and see Rick’s efforts for nearly 20 years have shown. Both Black and Red heifers on offer. By the way, Rick had purchased all of the Black Get-A-Long cows a few years back. The other thing I wanted to mention happening this summer was that we finally got to show our cows to our very good friend from Iowa, Mr. Kyle Gilchrist. He took three days out of his very busy schedule of managing and auctioneering his U.S. sales and came to spend time with Sherry and I. You talk about a love of the breed... he’s got Red Angus blood flowing through his veins! After all this time, Mulberry stands alone at the top of the mountain as one of the greatest, if not “the greatest” Red Angus sire in the world! He is on top of the performance world as he is in the top 1% for Weaning Weight, Yearling Weight, Carcass Weight and Total Maternal. Longevity is no problem either as he is still kickin’ (and bustin’ down nearly every plank fence he can find!). His dam is still going strong, too, at fifteen years of age and has another natural heifer calf on the ground at Brylor. Last year two full sisters sold in “Tradition With A Vision” at $21,500 each to Damar. Mulberry’s progeny at the Mayhem Sale in Kansas last fall averaged over $6000. To date ninety eight sons have sold in Brylor’s Bull Sale since 2007 and have averaged $7762. His last 200 straws of semen sold in the U.S. to average $208/straw. A feature daughter of Mulberry sells as Lot #1 in this sale.

I have no idea where our program would be today without the influence of this truly legendary sire! What a fantastic new photo we finally got of this incredible Hobo son. Grant Rolston and I chased this bull all over the pasture he was in in August (with 30 cows) to get it. He is amazingly easy fleshing, has a great temperament and calves so well on heifers too. His calves all possess that superior dark color that is so much in demand. His first daughter to sell brought $4800 in Red Round-up last fall from Lucky 7 Red Angus. After buying the entire Get-A-Long herd this February, we decided to buy Wander back from Diamond K in Maple Creek. They bought him in the Denver Sale in 2012 for $16,000. He will have bred over 80 head for us in our two breeding seasons in 2012. Selling Service.

One of the very best Sequoia sons going right now, Crimson Jewels is down in Wawota, Saskatchewan, at WRAZ. He has done a wonderful job both there and here and he’s already got a feature bull calf (4Z) at Brylor pegged for next year’s bull sale. Brandls’ still have his dam, 47N, and she had another son sell at the top of their bull sale at $6000 in March of 2012. The Big Rock daughters in this sale are bred to Crimson Jewels.

Here’s a herd bull who will go down as a very under appreciated sire for what he could do! His first daughters are milking now and have beautiful udders and are doing a first class job. He has had several sons sell in our bull sale and the buyers eat ‘em up. One was our second high seller at $25,000 this spring to Red Top. Another went commercially at $11,500 to Blue Ridge Colony. The Arson calves have lots of hair, lots of muscle and lots of marketability. He is now gone but he did service our two great donor cows, Lakme 70M and Lakme 204S, before he died.

Kodiak was our high seller in our 2012 bull sale at $37,500 to BLM Ranching in BC. We get asked the question an awful lot of times... “What’s coming up next?” Well, I’ve got to say I am super revved up about the calves in 2013 from this genetic marvel Black/Red carrier Kodiak son! His dam, 70M, has been phenomenal for us producing Pasquale, Thrill, Richter, 204S, 235X, Sequoia 212X and a full sister to 204Y at Griffins’ in Iowa. Since being the $39,000 Denver high seller two years ago to Jeff & Tammy Chatburn in Idaho, Stout is becoming a widely used A.I. sire the world over ... until we run out! After we dispersed the extremely good Rileys’ herd last fall (Brylor bought 22 head from Lloyd & Lorraine Cavers) we got this very good Toast son this spring to breed our heifers to. He’s a straight Canadian pedigree and has a beautiful profile, fantastic feet and out of this world numbers for a heifer bull. He was exposed to 60 heifers for 60 days and now he’s breeding heifers for Coyote Lake Cattle Co. Larry Neilsen in Saskatchewan owns his good, young Stringer sired dam.

We have never used an A.I. sire on our heifers that has done as much for them as Waves has! His first set of calves blow me away! They were very easy calving and have a look and style to them like no other. Waves was our high seller in 2011 and has seen limited use in other programs because of the extremely short supply of semen we have. The last two summers in southern Kansas have not been kind to him in the semen collecting department. He settles cows fine naturally and we did get a small amount of semen before he left Canada in May of 2011. Check out his new proof of EPD’s. I’m plumb excited to get to the bull sale next spring to see what our commercial bull buyers say about his calves!!

Exposed: Aug 1 - Sept 15 - Red Get-A-Long Wander 905 This is more than likely the most underestimated, unassuming, unaware and what I am quite sure will be the most undervalued Lot #1 cow we’ve ever had! Is she good enough to be a Lot #1 cow? You betcha! Is she going to be worth the money? Absolutely! She’s not overpowering at all in her make-up but she’s a powerhouse, crackerjack kind of a producer, and comes from the heart when she raises a calf and she knows how to make us money! She has hit two homers in a row in a $12,000 Makin’ Hay son to Brandls’ in 2011 and now a $25,000 Arson son to Red Top this spring.

Now look at Lot #1’s May 20th heifer calf at side by Skor, the 113 lb. birthweight Squall son (MAF) in our 2011 bull sale. She’s a knock-out and could be the best of the three! Kyle Gilchrist was up in mid-August from Iowa and very dearly wanted to get her for the “Under the Influence” Sale in Kansas in October. I bought 111Z’s dam as a heifer calf in the Red Coat Sale and she reminds me a bunch of the dams of both New Trend (31A) and Stallion (13G). All three didn’t cost a lot of money to buy ‘em but, boy, did they ever make a name for themselves!

A few years back her big sister, 2T, was the Lot #1 female at $56,700 to WSP in Michigan. 706P sold 1/2 interest to Mark Criss (On the Mark Cattle Co.) in Oregon at $24,000. We’ve sold flushes on her to Damar in Wisconsin and one to Wildcat in Kansas. Several embryos have gone to Australia to GK as well. Several sons have sold commercially locally for very good dollars and another daughter, 237X, went to Clay Enterprises at $10,500. We could have done this Lot of heifers the traditional method of just selecting one to go to town and sell her outright... but that’s just not me! You wouldn’t get the whole effect of just how good this group of full sisters is with just one or two in the sale. You notice we just about got all seven to stand perfectly for their family photo but not quite! Sort of reminds me of another group of four full sibs (the two legged kind with lots of energy that live on Brylor Ranch as well). Right from the start when these seven were born from our Little Royal recip heifers last year I knew we had something really cool building here. I have envisioned the sight of all seven sisters in the ring at Fort Macleod. A full brother named Eberle 50Y sold 1/2 interest to Anson Lewis and Brent Troyer in Ontario at $10,000. One of the most eye appealing, eye popping, eye catching heifers to sell this year. She’s also the darkest one to sell in our sale being a Black/Red carrier - what a tremendous method to add new outcross bloodlines to your herd. She has been a pen favorite because she is so sweet made and different. The Saugahatchee females around the Black Angus circles are known for their gorgeous udders and producing ability. The dam, 2F, has done it every time, as well, and now she’s deceased with no more eggs in the tank (except the three in Lot #110). She has had an “Elite” daughter sell to Dan Sewall and daughters sell to D’Arcy McGhan ($17,000) and Wildcat ($13,000). Her three sons by Mulberry this spring got ate up by our good commercial bull buyers and averaged $5634 to Spring Valley, Livingstone and Andy Meitz. A +100 spread between Birth and Yearling Weight is not at all bad, is it? I had to back up three steps to take her all in when I first got a look at this tank! She has as much volume, guts and capacity as any heifer at this stage I think I’ve seen, especially just on pasture. This heifer should not be leaving! Dennis says he messed up when he didn’t buy the dam of 17R at the Finnell Dispersal, too. 17R is one tremendous cow I am especially excited about the service to Crimson Jewels for a calf in early 2013.

The only Jester heifer in the offering! Jester was a $25,000 bull at the Regina Bull Sale in 2006. 148Y is a Black/Red carrier female out of a black cow, 5R, who has a terrific red heifer calf in our pasture this year.

642 is one of the better end cows on the load with a heifer calf and is daughter of Beyond from Kevin Dorrance and a member of the Carmella cow tribe. I remember all the way back to the first World Angus Forum in Canada in 1985 in Edmonton where Dennis and Shelly showed Carmella 70N; 544 was at her side that day.

I thought the show was over when I got a first glance of 6112 or 57Y, a Hitch daughter that can compete for the #1 or #2 hole any day! Hitch will give ‘em some performance yet maintains a lot of maternal and feminine properties. Dennis supported a lot of people in the cow business at a lot of the sales he attended. He bought the dam of this Hitch daughter at a sale in Olds that Gloria was at in 2008. 125T was a good combination of genetics of the Smash sire and the $20,000 Dividend 6K bull.

At first glance this female was maybe a little smaller and a little slighter built... then you look at her paper and recognize the fact she’s only an April! Very good outcross pedigree here all the way around with Hitch and his Bando influence and the Ronan Tex blood with GT Maximum maternally.

Lot #106 & #107 are a good pair of twin heifers with outcross breeding from the black side. Dennis always incorporated some new bloodlines using his knowledge of the Black business to seek out the best Red hided bulls!

WelCoMe To anoTher eXCiTinG BrYlor eVenT!!

Any time one writes a letter of welcome to an Angus event, there is always an air of anticipation and excitement in the moment. This time is no different although it also includes a touch of sadness on the part of Shelly and myself. This might be the last we ever write, proof read together and submit to you. Twenty five Hayshaker’s and twenty Angus Spring Classics plus countless footnotes does give you some writing experience! The Get-A-Long Stock Farm entire cow herd and bred heifers were sold to Brylor Ranches, Bryan and Sherry Mackenzie and family, in February, 2012. Thank you very much as our 35 years of Get-A-Long have been totally rewarding. We are left with five herd sires in partnership with Brox Stock Farm, the Boyd Monea family, a very integral part of making Get-A-Long a household name. Bryan made a very lucrative offer, I told him, “Don’t go away!” and four days later it was a done deal. Thank you again!! In the Brylor Event this year all of our pen of bred heifers are included - many paired together, retained interests in others. They indeed are a nice group and journeyed well to Pincher Creek. The remainder of the cows with bull calves will travel south this fall leaving us with embryos that need to be used. page 30

Everything about Get-A-Long has been fun from calving cows to merchandising Red Angus bulls and females. This herd won us “Alberta Angus Breeder of the Year” in 1986, “Canadian Red Angus Breeder of the Year” in 2006 plus Shelly won “Alberta Woman Promotor of the Year” in 1988. Earlier in the month of August Get-A-Long Stock Farm was inducted into the Alberta Angus Hall of Fame as a “Breed Builder” along side of Mackenzie Brothers. What an honor! Thank you, we are very humble. Brylor Ranch’s number one asset would be their customer base, both commercial and purebred. Ours was exactly the same - you made our herd what it is today Bryan, Sherry and family will carry it another step forward. The last two heifers today are a pair of “Ram Tough” daughters. Both are very young females and so very feminine and sweetly made. We have several Ram Tough heifer calves in the group that came the end of May from Wetaskiwin. They are the kind that will be in demand next year for sure. I knew I liked something a lot about these Ram Tough females. His dam was a $5300 heifer calf in the “Manitoba Magic” Sale in ‘02 from Weldon Plett. She also produced the $7900 last Hayshaker high seller... to Brylor! Amazing what you find out when you look!! The dam came from Anson Lewis in Ontario at an Autumn Colours Sale in ‘03. Well, it has been almost 20 years since we bought our first Red Angus cows from the OH Ranch. Things really started to take off a few years later with the purchase of the Bust’n bull from SSS and daughters of Brylor’s famous 31A and 40X cows at the TWAV sale. It seems fitting therefore, that the last time we sell some purebred Angus will be at the same TWAV sale, only 15 years later. For those of you that don’t know, we sold our purebred cow herd to One Earth Farms last year. They also are leasing our Saskatchewan ranch, continuing to produce purebred bulls for their own large cow herd. As part of that deal, we retained the yearling replacement heifers. Since they were coming out of a May/June calving program, we decided to hold them over and sell them as long yearlings this year. All the heifers on offer have been AI’d only and not turned with clean up bulls. Those that did not catch to their AI, will be retained by Ringstead to form the nucleus of a small commercial herd at the Cayley Alberta ranch. These heifers come from a purebred cow herd that produced 150 saleable two year old bulls each year. They calved on grass, for the most part unassisted, and only came home once a year for preg checking etc. We focused heavily on feet, udders and performance in our cow herd. As a result, we developed a loyal group of customers over the years with very few “warranty calls” on bulls sold. These heifers might not produce show animals for the new buyers, however they come from solid cow families and will produce good bulls that you as a breeder can have confidence in selling to your customers. We have enjoyed the cattle business over the last 20 years. In our careers, Deb and I have been involved in the oil and gas, real estate and ranching industries. Without a doubt, ranchers are the most hard working, honest, nicest people that we have had the pleasure to meet and do business with. BIDS: Every animal entering the ring will be sold to the highest bidder. 3. DISPuTES: In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. ANNouNCEMENTS: Any changes from information in this catalogue will be announced from the auction block, such changes will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue.
