We are so honored and thrilled that you have decided to check out our challenge this year. It is going to be an exciting day as we have another great line-up of up and comer trainers that are sure to impress you with their horsemanship. They have had our horses since June 30th and we have been eagerly watching the progress they have made on social media and cannot wait to see the final product. While we wait, allow us to give you an update on this past year at Rocking Heart Ranch and also give a few special thanks.
As some of you may be aware, at the challenge last year we were just getting over the initial shock of losing the ranch to the horrible Kenow Fire that ravaged the ranch on September 11, five days before the challenge. Thank you to everyone who showed up to give us their support and love after this disaster. Needless to say, it has been an interesting year. A year that has involved a lot of planning, transition, discussion, healing, and of course rebuilding. Planning to rebuild has involved a lot of dialogue about what we did like, what we did not, and what we can change. Overwhelmingly, we have decided to rebuild the ranch completely different than what was there in the past. Currently, we have completed our fencing and are planning on moving in a barn with living quarters upstairs for Jim and Angel. From a transition perspective, some of our family members decided that this was a good time for them to branch out on their own, spread their wings, and chase the dreams they have. This is something we must all do in our own time and we are so thankful that we live in a country which abounds in opportunity to chase your dreams. Jim and Angel are still very much involved in the ranch with daily operations and continue to focus on building a legacy to pass on to the next generation and have not missed a beat since the fire. Working alongside them is Melody, Doug, and Caitlin who are brushing up and learning all the pedigrees, breeding, as well as taking care of the administration and marketing of the ranch and its other divisions. Family members such as Brad, Ricki-Lee, Colton, Graydon, Brynn, Lily, and JJ help out when they can and we are so thankful to have them lend a hand. During this past year, we have been so fortunate to receive support and help from our community. A special set of thank yous needs to go out to a group of individuals who helped us out so much; Reid Heggie for keeping our weanlings over the winter, Kayla Zielke for helping us out with the horses, Rod Olsen for his willingness to haul horses for us, and all the contractors who worked so hard to get Jim and Angel into their temporary living quarters. Thank you to everyone who donated to support the fire victims, those who have given us words of encouragement and those who donated to the local Co-op to help rebuild. Our sincere thanks seems to be very little to offer for all that has been given to us, but it is what we can offer. Everyday we feel blessed to live in this area and feel grateful for what we have been given. Today we are here to witness some amazing horse trainers and this day would not be possible without the people that are working behind the scenes to make this happen. Thank you to Diane Baer, Kayla Zielke, Kelli Ober, Rod Olsen and everyone else who has helped make this event possible. Lyle Jackson lives in Cochrane, Alberta where he works as a horse trainer, coach and judge. He is an official carded horse show judge for Equine Canada, FEI Four Star International Level, American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), National Reining Horse Association (NRHA), National Reined CowHorse Association (NRCHA), National Snaffle Bit Assoc. (NSBA) and American Paint Horse Association (APHA). He has judged horse shows throughout Canada, United States, Europe, Australia, Central America and the Middle East, including National and World Championships. He is a show steward for the American Quarter Horse Association and the National Reining Horse Association. Lyle has trained for almost every western discipline and has won International Championships and National Championships in Reining, Working Cow Horse, Cutting, Western Pleasure, Western Riding and Halter competition.

Ryan Smith is fourth generation on the southern Alberta ranch where he was raised near Champion, AB. Ryan currently has an American Quarter Horse breeding program that offers highly-bred, versatile, using Quarter Horses to the everyday horse enthusiast. Ryan has worked with and ridden with many people in the western-horse world, from showing to reining & breeding to cow-work. I was raised in the Drayton Valley area, where I now operate KDB Equine, specializing in colt starting. I come from a cowboy family and have been around horses my entire life. I started training my own youngsters around age 12, and have come a long way since those days of trial and error. I began working in the industry out of high school and have had the opportunity to ride a large variety of horses in different disciplines, including close to two years under reining trainer Amanda Nystrom. I have since branched out and began building my own clientele. I do not show or train for any specific discipline, but rather strive to turn out well started, willing horses that can go on successfully in any direction.

I was raised on a ranch near Bindloss Alberta and began my riding career when I was 2. My mom and dad raised commercial cattle and my dad, Minor Becker, was also a horse trainer. I have followed in his footsteps. I belonged to 4H, competed in local rodeos, and in the Alberta youth working cowhorse competitions. I attended Olds College and was educated as an Animal Health Technician. I worked for several years in the field and now train horses full time. I start colts, train barrel racing horses and compete in barrel racing competitions. I fully appreciate, respect and love a horse’s natural acceptance of all the requests I ask it to do. Horses provide for me great meaning in life. Currently I live west of Medicine Hat with my husband and 2 daughters.
JERRi FLETCHER Hometown: millicent, ab | horse: docs king blue
Born and raised on a farm north east of Brooks AB. Jerri’s entire life has revolved around horses. Her parents Harv and Bea Seely have raised some of the best running quarter horses in Alberta. She has successfully competed in a wide range of disciplines including 3-day eventing, training running quarter horses and barrel racing were she holds numerous titles with the AQHRA, Chinook Rodeo Assoc. and Foothills Cowboy Assoc. Jerri and her husband Garry live near Millicent AB where they run a herd of red angus cows and she spends her time training barrel horses and competing.

I grew up in Calgary and got my start with horses from a horse camp I attended every summer as a child. This planted the greatest seed, as I do not come from an equestrian background. I have been involved in the Equine Industry professionally for about 7 years. In that time, I have gathered knowledge and experience; I have completed an Equine Science program, mentored under a trainer in Alberta and worked for top Dressage riders from New Zealand. I have realized that there will never be an end to my education when it comes to horses. I value the Art of Horsemanship and strive to always search for a subtler way of communication. Recently we have purchased a 31 acre property, and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to be more involved in the Equine Industry in the years to come. LACEY HADFORD Hometown: irricana, ab | horse: celebrity blue otoe My name is Lacey Hadford, I am a fourth generation performance horse trainer, performance and discipline coach, clinician and judge; raised in beautiful Southern Alberta Canada. My family has been committed to horsemanship and horse training going back to the early 19th century, as far as I know, starting with my great grandfather,Edward Teddy Young. Edward Young specialized in the training of cavalry stock for His Majesties Army in England in the 1900’s, and later immigrated to Canada. He farmed in the Bowmanton area, and at the outbreak of World War 1, he enlisted in the military and served overseas until he was seriously injured in the Boer War, he then came back to Canada and settled in Medicine Hat to raise his family and continue to train horses. On top of this, over the years I have learned a lot from different horsemen and women with all sorts of methods, training techniques, styles, disciplines and so on, and one of the most important things I have ever learned or ever will learn is that the best teacher and friend you will ever be lucky enough to meet is your horse. KERRY JOHNSTON Hometown: didsbury, ab | horse: rhr te valentine Kerry Johnston, is an Equestrian Canada Level 2 Competition Coach Certified in General Performance, Reining, and Speed events. 30 year AQHA member, competitor and coach, born and raised on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, and in 2016 married Don Johnston and relocated to Didsbury AB. Kerry was mentored under her childhood coach, avid AQHA competitor and multiple world Show qualifier Carole Walton, who encouraged her to obtain her coaching certification. During this time Kerry raised and trained horses for Carole and her late husband at W Bar Ranch, On Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Kerry has never let an opportunity to learn pass her by, and her attendance to the school of hard knocks and the hundreds of horses she has been involved with have prepared her for the many challenges that come with being a horse trainer and coach. Kerry feels that accomplishments can be as different as each individual person or horse. Some of hers have been able to live her life offering each horse or student the opportunity to become all that their ability allows.

JOEL LYBBERT

My name is Joel Lybbert, I live a legacy started by my family more than three generation ago. I was introduced to the training world when I was three or four years old. Starting with my dad buying ponies for me to start with him, to me taking client ponies, then starting our own horses, then client horses all the way to where I am today. My training job is forever changing as I study and learn more about the mind of a horse. I focus a lot on two things where a lot more training principles fall under and is sensitizing and desensitizing. Sensitizing is where I work on cues, trying to teach the horse my language. The goal is to have horses perform great maneuvers with very little effort on the behalf of the rider, the only way to do that is starting at a point where the horse will understand and honing in on that cue getting the horse more sensitive every day. DESENSITIZING is getting the horse quieter towards things that we don’t want effecting the horse, whether that be a rope hitting his rump in the branding pen or a rock monster in the field. My job as a horse trainer is one that requires a lot of honesty and trust from the owners behalf, and being in the industry for a number of years I can say most horses turn out to be great horses. But some are not worth the money it would take to get to a point where the owner would be safe riding, I can assure you I am honest with my clients when these situations present themselves. I am a huge advocate of the growth of the horse industry and my part in that involves creating a horse suited to the riders level.

Ali Massie owns & operates Buckskin Ali Horsemanship located in Fort Steele BC. She specializes in colt starting & problem solving. Ali developed a passion for horses at a young age. Training her first horse at the age of 15. Since then, Ali has been continuing her education daily by reading books, watching videos, and going to several clinics. She has been to numerous Jimmy Anderson clinics. She has also been fortunate enough to learn about reining with her amazing coach Wanda Dee Haddad-Thompson. Ali has been taught by one of her mentors that, soft hands plus feel & timing, is the key to horsemanship. She can often be found teaching her students to “quiet their hands” and “quiet their feet”. Ali believes that working horses is not a job, it’s a passion.
TREVOR MERTES Hometown: cochrane, ab | horse: docs hill twist
“If you want a calm horse, stay calm. If you want a patient horse, be patient.” This is a quote from one of Trevor’s mentors in which he lives by everyday while working with horses. A good portion of Trevor’s life has been riding range for different ranches across western Canada and the US, where true cowboying still exists. More recently, he’s been competing in Extreme Cowboy Challenges where he consistently places in the Green Horse and Pro Division. In the 2017 season he won the Alberta regionals as well as the finals in the Green Horse Division of the Extreme Cowboy Alberta association. Originally from British Columbia where his ranching roots started, he now runs his company called “Horses That Work” out of Cochrane, Alberta. He is able to bring his down to earth approach to horsemanship in any discipline of riding through a variety of training programs and clinics across Western Canada. MEAGAN PETTY Hometown: peers, ab | horse: sharp silverado
Meagan Petty is a 19 year old horse trainer located north of Peers, Alberta, originally from Calahoo, Alberta. Meagan grew up with animals, and began working with horses at the age of 10, apprenticing under her cousin, Jaquelene See, a Ken Mcnabb master certified horse trainer. By 14, Meagan had trained her first colt, and every summer after that she began accepting colts in for training. Meagan came to work full time for Jaquelene See at Poplar Ridge Ranch in the summer of 2016, after graduating high school. Since then, she has taken on the role of assistant trainer and coach, as well as taking on her own client horses. Meagan is also co-founder of Poplar Ridge Performance Club, an educational, performance based horse club for the more advanced lesson students at Poplar Ridge Ranch.
WOLTER VAN DEN KAMP Hometown: longview, ab | horse: rhr poco valentine
Wolter moved from Netherlands to Falun Alberta when he was 14 years old where his parents run a dairy farm. It wasn’t until Wolter took a back country packer job in Banff where he learnt the love of horses and dedicated himself to becoming horseman. He started studying the ways of Buck Brannaman whos teachings follow the likes of Ray Hunt and Tom Dorrance from there Wolter was hooked. He was determined to make a life for himself where horses were the focus. In the years to follow horses took him from the outback of Australia to the ranges of British Columbia and back here to Alberta. During his time working on large scale ranches and stations he started many colts and took a special appreciation for developing a soft feel. While following the buckaroo traditions of horsemanship and cattle handling, Wolter tries to bring those fundamentals into the horses he trains.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS Any horse that sells for $4000 or more may qualify for 50% down, no interest financing. The down payment must be made via Cash, Visa, or MasterCard and will be 50% of the final invoice price after GST has been charged and any and all deductions have been applied. Final payment will be due by July 30, 2019. Transfers will be held until the final payment is received. Any discounts will be applied to the final invoice prior to adding the GST. No dogs (other than service dogs) are allowed in the arena or around the horses. Because of our 30 day money back guarantee, original registration papers and transfers will be sent by regular mail to the buyers documented address after 30 days from the sale date to ensure each customer is happy with their horse. The 15% discount will be awarded to youth between the ages of 1018 that belong to an organized agricultural youth group. The youth must be a current member, able to produce proof of association, and be in attendance at the event. There may be a minimum bid on some horses.

I was fortunate enough to win DC Kansas Clay in 2015 as a yearling from the Rocking Heart Ranch. Since day one Kansas showed the strength of her breeding program with her smart mind and eye catching looks. This little mare was extremely easy to work with and quick to learn with great natural cow sense. I often describe her as ‘born broke’ because from her first ride as a twoyear-old in a halter and bareback to throwing a rope off of her she showed that she is bred to be a working performance horse. Kansas was my first young horse and she always made me feel safe through the training process and onwards. Nothing seemed to faze her from moving cattle at brandings to riding in parades, or running flags, and chasing wild horses at the Ponoka Stampede. There are very few horses that as a four-year-old can escort a Overland Stagecoach through a parade then run wild horses around a track, pick up loose runaway horses, move cattle, run flags, and finish off the day by letting little kids ride a horse for the first time. I threw a lot at this mare from a very young age and she took everything in stride with a willing attitude. She is so consistent and versatile that there isn’t a job I wouldn’t trust her to do and do well. Kansas will continue tobe my go-to mount for any job as she already has the skills to be a successful kids mount and a hard-working ranchhorse. I look forward to seeing what else this pretty mare and I can accomplish in the many years we have together. WOW FACTOR
Trainers will be given 3 minutes to demonstrate any additional training (freestyle). This portion is judged separately and will be held separately after all trainers have run through the compulsory routine. Their order of go will be the same as it was in the compulsory section. Trainers are allowed to bring in props, use cattle, and show what their horses can do.

Although Blue Valentine displayed less of a “Hancock Head” he amplified the positive traits of his sire Red Man. Born in 1956 to owner Ken Gunter, Blue Valentine was soon noticed by horseman Del Haverty who quickly made a deal with Ken to get him. Del trained “Blue” to rope calves, tie down, team rope, and haze steers to which he became famous for. Del sold half interest in him to Buster and Laurie Hayes who eventually stood Blue Valentine, Texas Blue Bonnet, and Plenty Coup. Inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame in 1992, Joe Hancock started out as a racing sensation during the great depression. Owned mostly by Tom Burnett from Texas, he became a legendary sire of rope horses that were sought after by “Old Time Ropers” . Th ese me n described the Hancock horses as being big, stout, tough, and packing a lot of bone which made them ideal Joe Hancock had two sons that became legendary in the roping arena and on the ranch; they were Texas Blue Bonnet and Red Man. Although the “Hancock Horses” including Red Man in their day were a course looking lot they were very popular. Well respected World Champion steer roper, Clarke McEntire of Stringtown, Oklahoma commented that “You could always spot a Hancock by their looks, but that Hancock head didn’t hurt ‘em any. They might not win a halter class but they were good in the arena or the pasture; they were smart. There is such a thing today as breeding too small of a head on horses, where it doesn’t hold enough”.

As time passed “Blue Valentine” ended up being owned by Hyde Merritt who was the last to rope on him at the Cheyenne Frontier days in 1970. Pro rodeo Hall of Fame and National Cowboy Hall of Fame inductee Everett Shaw was flagging at this rodeo and endorsed Blue Valentine by commenting “He is the best steer horse in the arena this year”. Hyde and Del commented that “he starts out of the box quicker and can catch cattle easier than any horse they had ridden”. He is by far the most famous and recognized grandson of Joe Hancock. Although line breeding was not new to the industry before Blue Valentine was born, his name is still today one of the most referenced in regards to percentage blood on a foundation pedigree . You might hear a proud owner explain “My stallion is 25% Blue Valentine”. The simple reason for this is that he passed down all of his positive traits for many generations which continues to identify with the majority of Quarter Horse owners that truly “use” their horse. His gentle disposition, outstanding versatility, and rugged build is why our ranch continues to highlight this line of genetics in our program. Our stallion RW Ames Blu is almost a carbon copy of this great horse. .

Like most successful programs that are in the breeding business, we feel it is important to bring along young stock out of proven
crosses for the future. RHR Plenty Blue is by our franchise stallion RW Ames Blue and by one of our top producing mares Plenty Blue Sister. By rights this will continue to give our program a double dose of gentle, willing, durable, and “Family Friendly”genetics for many years. He was started under saddle by trainer and clinician Renee Gareau in the winter of 2016. She explained that he was so easy to train and was always a complete gentleman around mares in the barn. His first small set of foals will be on the ground in May and June of 2018. If he is anything like his sire and dam we expect that he will become a future starproducer for Rocking Heart Ranch. Hello Rocking Heart Ranch! Since bringing Penny (my filly) home I have found a new level of trusting and forgiveness that I didn’t expect along with incredible intelligence. She is happy and often comes to visit by the fence when you go outside. We had to take her to the vet to have a hernia sorted out and I have been dressing the area for two weeks now, despite her not being comfortable with me touching it she stands like a champ and still waits at the barn for me to catch her and doctor her at about seven. She’s a calm and fantastic horse, thank you! Lew and I have been working on basic boundaries and barn skills such as spray bottles, brushing, vet needles, picking up feet, standing for the farrier and desensitizing. She is accepting these things slowly, but very good. We are having lots of fun and it’s great learning for me and Lew. She is growing very fast and is much bigger since last month.

Kayla has now put another 30 days on him as again we have not had time to ride him this last year. Deputy is one of the first to meet you at the gate in the pasture is gentle as can be, and will make a great family horse for whatever you decide to do.
