FEMALES OF MERIT Bred Heifer & Heifer Calf SALE On behalf of everyone here at Merit, we’d like to welcome you to the first “Females of Merit” Angus production sale!

iebreic Janelle L Trent &

The Merit cowherd began its development in 1984 with the purchase of two heifer calves at the Masterpiece sale. One of those females, PJT Pride 84S, produced to the age of 15 and became an anchor of our program. In the years that followed premium females were added from select sales and dispersals. Some cow families flourished, and those families are represented in this offering. We have always been critical of type, foot structure, and udder quality. Cattle that didn’t make the grade were culled without reservation. The Merit cowherd has excelled in a rugged and practical environment. We have distanced ourselves from the trends and fads and concentrated our efforts on producing sound functional females with the ability to raise the kind of bulls that the commercial industry continues to demand. No less than ten of the herdbulls that factor into this offering stem from cows that have walked our pastures. By concentrating the genetic influence of cattle that are functionally sound, we have eliminated the guess work. This “Females of Merit “offering represents the very best of the 2010 heifer calf crop. Only replacement quality heifers were kept and bred for this sale. We have only retained the kid’s 4H heifers and 2 others with ears frozen too short to properly tattoo. You will notice that we are, however, offering six “Choice” lots where the buyer will make their selection and we will take the other home. Either way, we’ll both win! The bred heifers carry the service of some of the most exciting outcross bulls available. We have used the same criteria to select these service sires as we do our herdbulls. They are

h

Carson Macy & Garrett,

Sandra Emile &

all bulls that excel in fertility with way above average scrotal epd’s, docility, calving ease, and performance while still maintaining genetic uniqueness. The coupons these heifers are carrying will be an outcross to virtually every program in the industry. As the North American cow herd rebuilds, there will be an increased demand for “heifer bulls”, especially bulls that offer genetic flexibility. This sale provides an unique opportunity to add these genetics in volume. The four heifer calves were selected to showcase the ability of our first calvers and what you can expect from the Bad Lands Image Maker 65W (aka “Hoo Doo”) service. His sons look equally promising and will definitely fill a maternal and calving ease niche. 2011 will be remembered as a year of tremendous opportunity in the beef industry. Enviromental and market factors have taken cow numbers to record lows. While the industry rebuilds we are poised to take advantage of record prices. Earlier this year Janelle and I were given the opportunity to purchase Emile and Sandra’s cowherd. They have chosen to go forward with strictly a commercial Angus based cow herd, currently numbering 300 and growing. This sale closes a chapter in their history. Now the opportunity is yours to access more than 25 years of study, scrutiny and selection. The future is bright and the opportunity is yours to seize! Trent We invite you to view the offering anytime at Merit or SLS. Remember the “Touch of Class”sale is Friday evening, so be sure to join us all for some “between sale” hospitality.

"Females of Merit" couldn't describe the genetic opportunity any better than what has been laid out before the Angus world! Going through this catalogue study the cow families, herdsires and of course the females that are being presented.....they all have “Merit”! The herd bulls selected come with a purpose in mind and a role to fill in their contribution to the betterment of the herd. They prove themselves in their breeding qualities with the intention of producing sons that will serve a positive influence for the beef industry, purebred or commercial and, likewise, females that fit the mold, produce in some tough country and are productive, intelligent and most importantly, sound! The offering consists of outcross genetics that are proven in the working world! This isn't going unnoticed as their bull sale averaged over $4000 this year - obviously purebred breeders are discovering what the commercial breeder has known for a long time - these cattle simply work! Coming through the ring on Sale Day is really a solid set of sound, functional females that will get the job done. Whether it be the Insight, Luke, Ideal, Forte or the Moneymaker females, they are right for the times. The services from “Hoo Doo”, Hoover Dam, Chisum and Black Cedar (whose semen was brought into Canada for limited use making his service extra special) are current and exciting as they, too, offer alternative genetics without compromising the basic fundamentals - all marketable genetics that enhance your next purchase! Join us for this opportunity and seize the genetics from some of the most diligent breeders you will find. On behalf on Castlerock Marketing and Merit Cattle Co consider this your invitation to see what these genetics can do for your herd. See you Sale Day!

Luke is a calving ease specialist without sacrificing muscle and performance. His progeny exhibit “true” Angus character. Luke is in the top 5% for low birth weights and milk. Luke daughters are making nice ranch females. They are hardy and have excellent hoof structure, well balanced, tidy udders and are very maternal. Luke has traditionally been our reliable “go to” bull for heifers. He is very moderate in stature. At 8 years of age Luke is very athletic and super sound. He has been used to cover females for Merits early calving and Ringsteads later calving program. The Luke daughters in the offering are the largest sire group represented, it’s a great opportunity to put some the these females together as they are cookie cutter uniform. Thanks, Mom & Dad, for Everything! 2011 marks their 40th and final year in the purebred seedstock business. They are “retiring” now with 300 commercial Angus cows, raising silver calves.

Insight has surpassed all our expectations. He is siring sons with true Angus character, muscle, eye appeal, additional scrotal, good temperament in a moderate package. Insight sons were well received by our commercial and purebred customers alike. They were the “buzz” at our 2011 bull sale, averaging $4155 on 17 sons. The first group of Insight daughters are now in production - they all did a good job on their calves. Insight daughters have excellent udder type as well. Insight does so many things right in consistantly producing good bulls and females that fit the bill. Insight’s dam, granddam, and great-grandam are all Pathfinder designated females in the American registry Even though we are not all about numbers, it’s hard not to brag Insight’s EPD’s up. He is in the top 1% for weaning, yearling, milk and scrotal! He is an easy calving bull, as well, and we have used him with success on our heifers. Owned by Merit, Rambur and GDAR

Rosilla 81X is one of the most powerfull Insight daughters in the offering. Her dam, 3216, was one of the most powerful females in Emile and Sandra’s herd. Granddam 770G was an “Elite” cow. 81X is also a ¾ sister to the “Choice Lot”, 14A.

119X’s dam, 21K, is the granddam of Merit Capone. 21K produced to 11 years of age when we lost her to complications related to a porcupine encounter. She is also the granddam of the good Lot 49 heifer calf. 119’s granddam has “Elite” cow designation. Ideal, raised at Sandy Bar Ranch, was a high selling bull at the Short Grass Sale to Ringstead Ranch. Trent admired this bull and his half brothers that were offered in the sale. 28S, with his exceptional hoof structure, loads of character, great hair and a mild disposition, was Trent’s pick of the bulls. The dam of 28S has produced herdsires for four purebred herds. We made a mutually beneficial deal with Ringstead to share Luke and 28S. His sons were respected by our commercial buyers and his daughters could possibly be his trademark. Unfortunately we lost 28S so that makes his only group of daughters at Merit very hard to part with.

204X is Carson’s good Ideal 28S heifer. Her granddam, 1017, Carson’s original cow, was a pasture orphan when her mother was hit by lightening in July. That obviously didn’t affect her future production, because she has been stellar. 204X’s dam, 7088 is a full sister to 6087 who is the dam of Merit 8808, herdsire for Glendor Angus and Merit. 204X is a real jewel.

As one studies the catalogue, it become apparent just how influential the Jilt 47K cow has been. 199X’s dam is a very attractively made Main Event daughter. A maternal sister by Dutch sold to BJ Scheirlinck in 2008 at the Grasslands sale. Be sure to ask BJ just how good she has been. We think 199X will look pretty shiny nursing a big Chisum calf!

We have been really impressed with how these Ideal cattle have developed. 139X is a deep sided, soft made female. Her dam, 6203, was the first to calve this year and she raised an absolute whopper of an Insight heifer calf. The service to Luke should be a great compliment.

Countess females are real workhorses. You will notice that the great-granddam, 7067, also has a daughter in the offering. Countess females possess exceptional udder type and great hair. The maternal influence of “Elite” sire, Equalizer 117’97, is always a good thing.

114X is the first 8711 daughter offered and she is a good one! Her only maternal brother was one of our high performing, high selling bulls in our 2010 sale to Robertson Bros. Her maternal sister is the dam of the Lot #1B Luke heifer. 114X’s dam, 6007, hasn’t missed yet and we expect the same from her.

115X is another one of those Pride females that traces back to PJT 84S. They all share the same feminine front end and beautiful head. This family excels in longevity. 115X has a really good maternal brother by Insight working for the Merrills at Bar Double M. Females like 115X never go out of style.

The performance of Main Event and Diesel backed by the surefire maternal strength of the Socialite cow family. The Socialite cow family’s capability surfaces again, both his dam and granddam are ”Elite” females. The original Socialite, 19B, had 11 natural calves with a combined weaning index of 106. She remained in our herd until she was 14 years old… she still had perfect feet and udder. Matador has also been a short gestation, low birth weight bull. Annie K’s 10 year old dam is still in production with a pistol of an Insight heifer calf on her this year. The MFA Fortune 21H daughters have been very productive with great feet and quality udders. Windy has done a nice job, with his daughters raising desirable calves like the Lot #1A female.

Here’s a ¾ sister to our previous lot, 122X. They are very similar in their make up. Windy sons are always popular at our bulls sale. Her granddam, 1214, is an Elite female.

When I finally saw his pedigree I was excited to find OCC Legacy, Pied Piper and AAR Optima in his tabulation. We secured a non-possession 1/3 interest with an agreement that no semen would be sold. Equation has consistently sired extra capacity in his daughters and high performing sons with large scrotal measurements. BW: 78 lbs.

Since meeting Chad Sewall at the Grasslands sale a few years back, it became apparent we shared a common critical eye for cattle. I knew their breeding philosophy would mesh with our cows. “ Hoo Doo” was subsequently selected from Bad Lands Angus as a herdsire to use on heifers. His progeny are born easily with loads of vigor. They are stout , soft made and moderate in frame. He should leave some hellish females with HA Image Maker and Daquante 26L in his tabulation. The Daquante 26L daughters at Sewalls’ are awesome.
