Blood Bay, 15 hands, 1075 pounds in working shape, Driftwood founded a family of using horses that has persisted for over eight decades. He began his career as a superior match racing horse even beating the mighty Clabber. Later, trained as a tie down roping mount, he developed quite a following amongst the tough ropers down in Arizona where he was competed on. 1941 in Payson, Arizona, his riders collected checks in calf roping, team tying, single steer roping and bulldogging and then he won the horse race down the arena. 1943 - Purchased by Channing and Catherine “Katy” Peake of California for use in their breeding operation. Specializing in rodeo and performance horses, he was an outstanding sire of rope horses and also sired Jernigan Peake, still considered one of the greatest stock horses of all time.
JOE HANCOCK 1923 - 1943
Welcome to the 2013 CU Production Sale! Our sale offering is 30 colts and 18 ride horses – 5 from ourselves plus another 13 from guest consignors. We would like to thank our guest consignors for their horses in this sale. We would also like to thank our auctioneer - Darren Shaw, pedigree man - Neil Darroch, ringmen - Justin Keeley & Frank Jenkins, also Sid Leavitt who does an outstanding job with the catalogue, Dale & Dana Jensen who provide the concessions, Rod & Kaylynn at the Agridome and the many friends and neighbors and family that help with many of the other details. We would also like to thank you, the customer, for your interest in these horses. We work hard to find, breed and raise the best horses that we can. We select for horses that are good minded and trainable, athletic and with the ability to do ranch and cattle work effectively. It has been 14 years since we purchased the stallion, Quarter Dry, who turned out to be a tremendous sire and crossed on our hand picked mares to produce exactly what we wanted. His geldings are awesome ranch horses and now his daughters are producing the second generation. We were fortunate to be able to find and purchase PC Bar Dox Frost and now that we are riding his colts we feel doubly blessed! His blood crossed on the Quarter Dry’s is producing tremendous ranch horses. We are also looking forward to riding the colts out of our other stallions, “Cowboy” and “Tex”. The Ride Horses in the sale are coming along well and are mostly young horses again. We encourage you to call and talk to us or the consignors about any horses you may be interested in or come to the ranch to take a look. Thank you - We look forward to seeing you Sale Day!
PLEASE BRING THIS CATALOGUE WITH YOU TO THE SALE!!
Dark Brown, 15.3 hands, big hip & heavy loin and, like Driftwood, was a top match racing horse. Bred by John Hancock of Perryton, TX, and sold to Tom Burnett of the Four Sixes, many ropers consider Joe Hancock the all-time greatest sire of rope horses. In the 1950’s Shoat Webster & Everett Shaw traded roping championships riding the great Hancock bred rope horses, “Peanuts” & “Popcorn”. The Hancocks, big, stout & tough with lots of bone, were brown, dark bay, or roan with big feet and big heads. They could not be called pretty, but they were good withered, deep cinching, durable horses that could run. The Driftwood x Hancock cross, called a master stroke, combines the best qualities of each line - horses that are athletic, sound, durable, smooth gaited, fast & willing, producing superior ranch & rodeo horses. –1–

We have also received very good reports from customers who have started riding his progeny.

DRIFT OAKWOOD is a standup, correct, 15.2 hh stallion. He is backed by the blood of his remarkable, proven sire, COWBOY DRIFT, who the legendary Babbitt Ranch used for many years as their headline stallion. OAKWOOD’S dam stacks DRIFTWOOD blood with the cowhorse blood of DOC’S OAK and the racing blood of JET SMOOTH, making him a versatile and uniquely bred horse.

POCO SPEEDY JUDY SUE DOC’S OAK MISS DIAMOND DAWN DRIFTWOOD IKE KATY WAS A LADY
Combining an easy going attitude with plenty of athletic ability, speed, lots of action and cow sense, OAKWOOD is siring foals that we are excited to put some miles on. OAKWOOD sired many nice colts for the Balkenbush Sunshine Ranch of Conrad, Montana, before coming to us.
(1932 - 1960)
From the race track to the rodeo arena and open pastures, Driftwood was legendary for his quick speed, performance ability, and the mental attitude to retain training, functional conformation and physical stamina to stand up under hard use, and carry the traits on down through the generations making "Driftwood" unique among stallions.
DRIFTWOOD IKE "Driftwood Ike", nicknamed "Ike", was born in 1954 and was probably the most famous son of "Driftwood". Note that “Ike” appears twice in Oakwood Drift’s pedigree.

DRY was QUARTER bred by John Balkenbush of Conrad Montana. We always just called him “JOE” partly because he traced back to JOE HANCOCK seven times. Joe’s dam, DRY FORK BELLE, was John’s favorite saddle mare. JOE broke out really easy and retained his training well. He was fun to ride and never broncy.
SHOW BAR BOB HANABAR BLUE GOOSEBERRY BONNY 02
We have ridden quite a number of Joe’s sons and daughters, many of which have made top ranch and rope horses. We have retained many of his daughters to breed to our other stallions. They are doing a tremendous job. Unfortunately we lost JOE in the spring of 2008. We are grateful to John Balkenbush for having raised and sold us this outstanding stallion.
Tyrel on Ranger and Matt on Clyde, their own personal horses, sons of “Joe” and excellent ranch horses.

“Leo” is a gelding with Doc’s Dee Bar top and bottom and that is a sire that has produced some top rope horses particularly in the heeling and calf roping events. This gelding has been Wyatt’s ranch rodeo and heeling horse. He is good in the box and rates cattle well and has been a great horse for Wyatt who is now riding a bunch of young horses so is willing to let this one go. Great opportunity here on a seasoned horse! CONSIGNED BY ROD OLSEN - 403-653-7264

This wonderful 11 year old mare was purchased from us by the Leishman family when she was 5 years old after having been ridden maybe one month. Within two weeks Shawn, then 10 years old, started riding her and since then she has been passed down though the family – Madison, Jill and Allison all have ridden her as well as the grandparents, however she has mostly been Madison’s mount. She has been roped on and used a ton punching cows. If you are looking for a family horse – this is the real deal! CONSIGNED BY NEIL LEISHMAN - 403-653-1740
