CU RANCH

Blood Bay, 15 hands, 1075 pounds in working shape, Driftwood founded a family of using horses that has persisted for over eight decades. He began his career as a superior match racing horse even beating the mighty Clabber. Later, trained as a tie down roping mount, he developed quite a following amongst the tough ropers down in Arizona where he was competed on. 1941 in Payson, Arizona, his riders collected checks in calf roping, team tying, single steer roping and bulldogging and then he won the horse race down the arena. 1943 - Purchased by Channing and Catherine “Katy” Peake of California for use in their breeding operation. Specializing in rodeo and performance horses, he was an outstanding sire of rope horses and also sired Jernigan Peake, still considered one of the greatest stock horses of all time.

(403) 653-1031 Rock • Shauna • Tyrel • Clayton • Lauren • Matt Welcome! We invite you to our 5th Quarter Horse production sale and thank you for your interest in our horses. Offered are 32 foals and 19 ride horses. We have a good number of consignors, new and repeat, and are excited about the horses they have to offer. Our goal is to raise top ranch horses with a lot of athletic ability, superior conformation, good bone and feet, trainable minds and kind dispositions. We think a top ranch horse with these qualities is a great all around horse that would also excel in any rodeo event, and we are pleased with the direction our program is headed. Our foal crop will be similar to last year’s with the same four sire groups represented. We have ridden colts from each of these sire groups and feel they are the right kind. The foals are primarily out of older mares we have purchased or daughters of Quarter Dry that we raised here on the ranch. We think that the Quarter Dry’s make as good of ranch horse as we have ridden so the mares by him give us a solid foundation. The ride horses are coming along well and they are mostly young horses again. We encourage you to call and talk to us or the other consigners about any horses you may be interested in or come to the ranch to take a look. We look forward to seeing you Sale Day. Thank you, Rock & Shauna Smith Family

PLEASE BRING THIS CATALOGUE WITH YOU TO THE SALE!!

Dark Brown, 15.3 hands, big hip & heavy loin and, like Driftwood, was a top match racing horse. Bred by John Hancock of Perryton, TX, and sold to Tom Burnett of the Four Sixes, many ropers consider Joe Hancock the all-time greatest sire of rope horses. In the 1950’s Shoat Webster & Everett Shaw traded roping championships riding the great Hancock bred rope horses, “Peanuts” & “Popcorn”. The Hancocks, big, stout & tough with lots of bone, were brown, dark bay, or roan with big feet and big heads. They could not be called pretty, but they were good withered, deep cinching, durable horses that could run. The Driftwood x Hancock cross, called a master stroke, combines the best qualities of each line - horses that are athletic, sound, durable, smooth gaited, fast & willing, producing superior ranch & rodeo horses. –1–

DRIFT OAKWOOD is a standup, correct, 15.2 hh stallion. He is backed by the blood of his remarkable, proven sire, COWBOY DRIFT, who the legendary Babbitt Ranch used for many years as their headline stallion. OAKWOOD’S dam stacks DRIFTWOOD blood with the cowhorse blood of DOC’S OAK and the racing blood of JET SMOOTH, making him a versatile and uniquely bred horse.

Combining an easy going attitude with plenty of athletic ability, speed, lots of action and cow sense, OAKWOOD is siring foals that we are excited to put some miles on. OAKWOOD sired many nice colts for the Balkenbush Sunshine Ranch of Conrad, Montana, before coming to us.

(1932 - 1960)

From the race track to the rodeo arena and open pastures, Driftwood was legendary for his quick speed, performance ability, and the mental attitude to retain training, functional conformation and physical stamina to stand up under hard use, and carry the traits on down through the generations making "Driftwood" unique among stallions.

DRIFTWOOD IKE "Driftwood Ike", nicknamed "Ike", was born in 1954 and was probably the most famous son of "Driftwood". Note that “Ike” appears twice in Oakwood Drift’s pedigree.

GUATEMALA CANAL Sire of Quarter Dry, bred and used by Charlie Judd of Buckhorn, New Mexico, Guatemala Canal produced exceptionally willing horses. Reportedly his broke geldings could not be bought. Sold to John Balkenbush, he became John’s “number 1” sire of broodmares and John tried a few different bloodlines, even within the Driftwoods.

DRY was QUARTER bred by John Balkenbush of Conrad Montana. We always just called him “JOE” partly because he traced back to JOE HANCOCK seven times. Joe’s dam, DRY FORK BELLE, was John’s favorite saddle mare. JOE broke out really easy and retained his training well. He was fun to ride and never broncy.

SHOW BAR BOB HANABAR BLUE GOOSEBERRY BONNY 02

We have ridden quite a number of Joe’s sons and daughters, many of which have made top ranch and rope horses. We have retained many of his daughters to breed to our other stallions. They are doing a tremendous job. Unfortunately we lost JOE in the spring of 2008. We are grateful to John Balkenbush for having raised and sold us this outstanding stallion.

Solid five year old gelding with lots of experience for his age - A.I., branding, roping to doctor in the field or the corral, and has been used as a ranch rodeo mount. He’s good minded, athletic, has lots of speed, nice in the bridle, easy to shoe, fast walk, trots out, easy lope - exactly my kind of horse and a great representative of what we are trying to produce in our breeding program. He will be missed!!

“Dollar”, as we call him, is the cross of Quarter Dry and Christy Oaks which has been one of our best and most proven combinations. We’ve ridden four full siblings to “Dollar” and they were all awesome and so is he! A well built horse with good bone and feet, he combines his good looks with athletic ability and a great disposition. He’s chased cows, been ridden through lots of brush and crossed creeks. He’s smooth moving and solid... a TOP PROSPECT!

“Whit” is a really quiet young gelding that keeps improving every week. I have been running in the saddle horses on him the last few days and he is getting used to a rope as well. He is easy to catch out in the field and seems to like people. I expect this colt to be a family type horse in a year or two with the right kind of experience.

This nine year old mare has had a fair bit of professional reining training. She seems pretty easy going and is really broke. Nice in the bridle with a soft stop, she’s an own daughter of Wranglers War Leo and out of a granddaughter of Doc’s Dee Bar - two horses whose offspring have really excelled in arena and rodeo events. This mare could go a lot of different directions - to the ranch, to the arena or to the breeding pasture. She is also one of the best prospects in the sale for a family type horse. 2007 Lynn’s winter project this last year, “Silver” has a good walk, trot and lope. He will go to a posting trot on command and back to a slow jog also on command. He will also side pass through gates. “Silver” was used a small amount for ranch roping and roping a “Heel-o-matic” and did well with both. This nice dispositioned horse was ridden extensively in the hills this spring and can cover the country. Standing at 15.2 hands, he is big enough to head steers or make a strong ranch horse.

This little mare is ready to go to work. She has been ridden at the feedlot making her great at getting gates, working and cutting cattle. Even though she is small, she has a big heart and when needing quick feet she has it. She has a good handle and soft face. She is a very even tempered mare and only wants to please you. She is good to load, shoe, and be with other horses. She has spent a lot of her riding time in the mountains and has been started on roping the “Heel-o-matic” and some live cattle. She has some of the leading top world champion bloodlines in her pedigree.
