Welcome to our 2019 bull sale and another edition of Forage-Developed 2 Year Old Angus Bulls. Over the course of three generations and 69 years we have been developing and marketing 2 Year Old bulls. We had already been selling bulls for decades, from the “belt-buckle” bulls of the ‘50’s to 2200 lb. 2 Year Old bulls of the ‘80’s. However, a shift was made to providing a more sustainable product. We wanted to provide cattle that were functional long term; cattle that would enhance the profitability of our customers as well as our own operation. In 2007 we held our first annual Forage-Developed Bull Sale. The welcome letter wrote Feb. 15/07 read: “These bulls are designed to optimize, not necessarily maximize, and represent our commitment to providing you with the type of cattle that will add value and profitability. Our program demands reproductive efficiency, soundness, longevity and consistency in our cattle. We consider these to be the necessary traits for profitability in the cattle business”. Through linebreeding to proven maternal sires, we have achieved a homogenous and uniform cow herd. The comment I hear most is how every cow in the herd looks like one another. The same holds true with the sale bulls. Our cow size has moderated over the past two decades, and this is directly attributed to the cows matching the environmental pressure we place on them. Plus, the percent body weight weaned per cow is now higher. If we were a commercial cow/calf outfit we would have the ability to run more cows per acre with the option to initiate a terminal crossbreeding system on those cows. Cow size is indeterminant: but as a whole, the smaller cows are more profitable. It is a paradigm shift from profit per cow to profit per acre – I see no other way. To all those who have bought into the program we thank you. As cattle producers, we all have access to the same genetics annually. We have focused on stacking proven genetics that are like-in-type; while allowing the environment to sort through the genetic base we have, or have accessed, in order to determine the replacements we keep and the bulls we sell. This has resulted in a multi-generational product that breed true in both genotype and phenotype. Pertaining to genotype, an outcross pedigree typically reflects a more robust-looking bull at sale time. That outcross individual is expressing that added performance within himself, and his subsequent F1 progeny will revert to the average of his parents. Not only that, but because of the randomization of heterogeneous genes seen within his pedigree, he will not breed as true as a linebred bull. “Who is getting the “hybrid vigor” – you or your bull supplier?

As an example, we have used “outcross bulls” that produced a distribution of birth weights from 65 – 110 lbs. A linebred bull will also revert to his parental average, but the fall won’t be as hard because of his homogeneous genes within his pedigree. The F1 cross of a linebred bull should realize hybrid vigor to a greater extent and the qualitative and quantitative distribution of traits, such as birth weight or phenotype, should be more consistent. One just has to look to the breeding systems of chickens or canola to see how pure strains, when crossed, create true homogeneous hybrids. Outcrossing is a breeding tool we use on a small proportion of the herd, with those sires typically coming from herds that also “line up” cattle in the pedigree. Progeny from bulls brought in is a way to benchmark our herd against the general population. As with any new bull brought in, you inherit his good and bad DNA. The positive with a linebred bull is that the “good” AND “bad” DNA has been exposed to a greater degree with the “bad” eliminated earlier through culling. With that, the sale offering represents a cross section of proven genetics. All reference sires have daughters in, or coming into production this year, and all sires walk our pastures. Bulls from past sales have sired cattle that fit in grass-based branded beef programs; sired steers excelling in grain-fed carcass trials; sired division winners from 4-H to Agribition; and sale highs for fellow breeders. Most importantly, those bulls sired maternal function with customers returning because those Chapman-sired cows had stayability. The bull offering is uniform and consistent – quality sells throughout. MOST PROFITABLE COWS Harlan Hughes | Jul 30, 2018

Will a heifer calf born in 2018 become, along with her herdmates, the most profitable cow in your herd? An analysis of past and present cattle cycles suggests this could be the case. Last month, we looked at the production trends during the first seven years of the current cattle cycle for four different states. The general conclusion was that production did not change much during the first seven years of the current cattle cycle. I concluded that ranchers, on the aggregate, did not change their production systems much during, or as a result of, the cattle cycle. This month let’s look at some economic performance factors over the first seven years of the current cattle cycle. Again, this article is based around the farm business management data from four states — North Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota and Utah. The focus here will be on the combined economic summary of beef cow herds from these states.

Remember, this data is not presented as being representative of these four states. Rather, it is the summary of 1,766 herd-years of data in the database from these states from 2009 through 2015. The data source is the FINBIN database of the University of Minnesota. Gross income per cow: When you group producers, gross income per cow becomes the sum of several different income categories. Some ranchers sell their calves at weaning, while other ranchers’ calves are transferred to backgrounding and/or retained ownership enterprises. Some calves are also transferred to heifer development enterprises. These cow herds are all credited with the market value of the weaned calves produced, regardless of how the final calves are marketed These herds also receive income from cull cow sales and cull bull sales. We also have a very small “other” catchall income category. Finally, an inventory change value is included, as some ranchers are building their breeding herds and others are reducing their breeding herds. Annual inventory changes in cow numbers can be positive or negative, depending on that year’s specific herd management programs. calves can become part of a flexible stocking rate for the ranch, as well as possibly offering counter-seasonal marketing options.

Figure 1 presents the combined gross income summary for the study herds over the seven-year period of 2009-15. The seven-year average annual gross income per cow for these four states from 2009 through 2015 was $1,014 per cow. The lowest gross income was in 2009, and the peak gross income was in 2014. Gross income increased every year for the first six years of the current price cycle.

The statistical trend in gross income over these seven years was a plus $130 per year (Figure 2); however, gross income in 2014 was far above the trend line. Ranchers will not experience many 2014s in a lifetime â&#x20AC;&#x201D; at best they could experience one such year during each cattle cycle, and maybe they will experience three cattle cycles in a lifetime. Probably more important is that calf prices trended upward from the low of the last cattle cycle (2008) through the peak of the current cycle (2014) (see Figure 2). A productive cow during this time period increased her generated gross income in each year of this phase of the cattle cycle. This increase in gross income halted in 2015 as we entered the downward phase of the current beef price cycle. In general, we can expect an upward phase and a downward phase of the same beef price cycle. Year 2009 marked the beginning, year 2014 marked the top, and year 2015 marked the beginning of the downward phase in the current beef price cycle. Projections are that the downward trend could continue into 2019.

DIRECT COSTS OF PRODUCTION: Direct costs of production include raised feed (valued at market price); costs for protein, minerals and pasture (at rental rates); breeding fees; veterinary; supplies; fuel and oil; repairs; hired labor; custom hire; livestock leases; and operating interest. Herd replacement costs, including bull replacements, are also included. Figure 3 presents the four-state combined direct costs with a seven-year average and an average for each of the seven individual years. The seven-year average direct costs of production for all study herds was $730 per cow. Again, the direct cost trend is more informative than the seven-year average (see Figure 4). The statistical trend for cost of production increased an average of $60 per year over this seven-year period. Some of the increased gross income over these years went for increased costs. Direct costs of production actually peaked in 2015 at $894 per cow. Note that replacement costs of cows and bulls also peaked in 2015. I wonder how many new beef herds were started in 2015 as a result of the high calf prices in 2014? The seven-year average return over direct costs was $284 per cow. The seven-year trend was a positive $70 per cow per year. As you would guess, 2014 was by far the peak year, with a $729 average return over direct costs per cow (see Figure 5).

SINCLAIR RITO 9R7 SONS Overhead costs, labor and management charge: Space limitations require that I quickly summarize overhead expenses, labor and management costs, and get to the implications of the bottom line of these beef cow herds. Overhead expenses include hired labor, farm insurance, utilities, interest, machine and building depreciation, and miscellaneous costs. The seven-year average overhead expenses for these herds was $100 per cow. The sevenyear total direct and overhead expenses came to $830 per cow (see Figure 6).

After deducting the direct and overhead expenses, the earned net return to labor and management for the seven years averaged $184 per cow per year. After a seven-year average labor and management charge of $69 per cow, net returns per cow after the labor and management change generated a seven-year average of $114 per cow.

The largest bottom-line number for these beef cow herds is the $529 per cow for 2014. Cull cow income accounted for $206 of this average return over direct costs in 2014. I calculate that cull cows sold in 2014 for more than $1,100 (see Figure 7)! The cull cow price at the time a cow ends her productive lifetime is very critical to that beef cow’s lifetime earned net income. Economic value of a beef cow: The economic value of a beef cow in any rancher’s herd is the sum of her annual earned net returns after the labor and management generated from all of her lifetime calves produced while in that herd, plus her cull value when sold from the herd. Let’s look at one particular cow. It turns out that a cow culled in 2014 became quite a profitable cow. Why? She produced several relatively highpriced calves, and then brought a premium as a cull cow! She had a sevenyear productive life span: She was born in 2006, developed in 2007 and produced her first calf in 2008. During her productive lifetime, weaned calf prices generally went up from $116 per cwt in her early productive life to $245 per cwt in 2014. I suggest that this will be the most profitable beef cow in the current cattle cycle. Now for the key point of this article: Are we about to duplicate this again if the next price cycle peaks in 2026? If so, this could be a heifer calf born in 2018!

0505X pedigree consists of multiple generations of top females known for fertility, udder composition, and adaptability. He easily stamps his progeny to fit any grass-based program. He bred over 400 cows naturally; obviously possessing exceptional libido and was sold as a nine year old bull as sound and robust as he was as a 2 year old. His donor dam is a true 1300 lb cow; moderate, easy fleshing and good footed. Her udder is typical of the Joker-bred females and sets the standard for quality with small well placed teats, and snug rear and fore udder attachment even today as a 15 year old cow. 0505X isn’t a terminal performance sire yet he did sire our high selling bull in both 2015 and 2016, averaging $32,000. This line has proven its ability to propagate efficiency, appetite and conversion, and super sweet udders on the daughters.

0511X sold through our 2012 bull sale as a sale feature to the Lacombe Research Centre, and was later repurchased as a five year old bull, breeding 70 cows a year during his tenure here. In addition to 0511X, we retained his maternal brother in 2014, 4547B, who also has sons selling. His donor dam posted a WR 12 @ 103. The daughters of 0511X are fabulous in terms of type. From what I have seen, he is a bull that reminds me a lot of Leachman Right Time in how he sires that maternal goodness but perhaps with more moderation. Grab a hold of his sons – they have the extra length of spine, maternal strength, and a shoulder set and skull shape to work on heifers or cows.

3589A is a 3rd generation Memento, and was our $48,000 high selling bull in 2015 to Crescent Creek Angus, SK. Excellent footed bull, his dam 8065U is one of the top cows on the ranch, being designated an Elite dam with the Canadian Angus Association on her first four calves, and posts a WR of 9/110, a YR 9/108 with a 366 day calving interval. His Right Time grandmother is near the top in terms of phenotype and posts a WR and YR of 13/104 and 13/103 respectively with a 368 day CI. Based on percentages, 3589A has placed the most bred heifers per sire group from his first calf crop here. 3589A is a true breeding bull leaving sons better than him and daughters that will have a long term maternal legacy possessing fertility and longevity.

161 was acquired as the 3rd high dollar bull from McCumber in 2012. Impressive phenotype and genotype described 161 who has proven to be a reliable source of herd building genetics. There is no guesswork with this bull: his Pathfinder donor dam, 463 has not missed posting a WWR 7@110, YWR 7@106, IMF 6@110, REA @100, and her grand dam was still in production at the age 18. His sire is the result of mating the standard for performance and longevity, Rito 707, with an N-Bar donor who was still in production at the age of 17. His daughters are establishing themselves as productive brood cows: wide in the pins with the wedge shaped look and nice tidy udders. In 2014 we partnered with Crowfoot Cattle on four of the top bulls from Cole Creek Angus in Montana. The following year Crowfoot had their dispersal and those Cole Creek bulls were sold off. Bandit’s dam, an Equation 5793R daughter, was acquired by Richmond’s as the high selling bred heifer out of that same dispersal. Knowing the cow, the sire and the lineage behind him, Bandit was purchased as the high selling bull out of the Richmond sale. Excellent performance as a calf, his progeny are extra docile possessing a big scrotal with very sound feet and a lot of middle. His 1st daughters to calve also exhibit extra pelvic width. There is a lot of traditional Angus character in this line and his progeny offer a lot of economical traits inherent to profitability.

“268” was acquired from Crowfoot Cattle as their high selling Angus bull in 2013. He is a bull that has worked his way up the ladder, initially being used in a multi-sire pasture, to a few consecutive years as a heifer bull, and then on to mature cows. He sires a big middle in his progeny and they are easy keepers. 268 is a very sound bull, with a big hoof that really stands down on all four corners. As an added bonus, his dam was designated an Association Elite dam. His sons in 2018 were very well received. Utilize them to improve feet, add capacity, and for their calving ease; as well as the maternal influence being an OCC Legacy 839L downline.

We retained five home-raised bulls out of the 2014 calf crop. Those five were all out of what we considered paternally prepotent dams that were proven and donor worthy. 4547B was one of those five and out of the same dam as Chapman Memento 0511X. She posted a WR of 12/103. Interesting that 4547 is a naturally sired son of Crowfoot Equation 5793R who ran here with 50 cows as a nine year old bull. The first Crowfoot Equation daughters are now entering their 12th year and easily make an argument to going back to using the old bull, or his downline. 4547B looks a lot like reference sire XO Crowfoot 268Z. Very maternal pedigree full of great udders, great feet and longevity.

3RC33 is a long made, attractive herd sire that was very correct in his overall stature. He has exceptionally balanced performance data for BW, WW, YW, SC and ultrasound for % IMF and REA. His daughters are in production; very feminine, not that big but wean a high % of their body weight. What I see is the daughters emulating Brokers’ Pathfinder dam – smaller made but highly productive when considering pounds weaned per unit of input. His progeny display many traits that help make ranchers profitable; most importantly by siring calves that are born alive with the will to survive and thrive. Based solely on phenotype, his sons qualify as excellent heifer bulls.

BIF GUIDELINES 1 = Non-aggressive (docile). Walks slowly, can be approached closely by humans, not excited by humans or facilities. 2 = Slightly Aggressive. Runs along fences, will stand in corner if humans stay away, may pace fence. 3 = Moderately Aggressive. Runs along fences, head up and will run if humans move closer, stops before hitting gates and fences, avoids humans. 4 = Aggressive. Runs, stays in back group, head high and very aware of humans, may run into fences and gates even with some distance, will likely run into fences if alone in pen. 5 = Very Aggressive. Excited, runs into fences, runs over humans and anything else in path, “crazy”. Cattle with a Pen Score of 4 and 5 should be culled.

Calving Ease Direct (CE), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters.
