Well it’s almost fall again and it seems like summer has once again flown by faster than it ever should. Out west it’s definitely not been a summer to remember with the serious drought in much of the Prairies and British Columbia. Hay is scarce and when you do find some for sale it’s worth more than it makes sense to pay with some people looking for up to $200 for a round bale. This feed shortage should make for an interesting winter for sure. We got our first rain of the season on July 20, a little late for the hay crops and pastures. On one of my fields I made a total of 12 small round bales on 45 acres – lots of driving and definitely easy on twine! However, on the flip side, for those required to reduce numbers we are still hitting record prices on all of the weight classes of calves, and meat cows have been holding their own. For anyone able to carry their cows or heifer calves over the winter my prediction is that they will be ‘Golden’ in the spring time.
L’automne est presque là et l’été passe si vite, c’est jamais assez long. Ici dans l’Ouest ça vraiment pas un été qu’on voudra se souvenir avec la grande sécheresse d’une grande partie des Prairies et de la Colombie-Britannique. Le foin est rare et quand on en trouve il se vend jusqu’à 200,00 $ la balle, ça vaut plus que ce qu’il est logique de payer. L’hiver sera long avec cette pénurie d’aliments. Nous avons eu notre première pluie de la saison le 20 juillet, un peu tard pour les cultures fourragères et les pâturages. Sur un de mes champs, j’ai récolté un total de 12 petites balles rondes sur 45 acres – beaucoup de terrain à couvrir et certainement facile sur la ficelle! Cependant, sur le revers de la médaille, pour ceux qui doivent réduire le nombre nous sommes toujours à un prix record sur l’ensemble des catégories de veau et les bovins de boucherie conservent leur prix haut. Pour ceux en mesure de garder leurs vaches ou génisses tout l’hiver ma prédiction est qu’ils seront considéré comme de l’OR au printemps.
On to blonde business - as I write this we are about a month away from the National AGM, Show and Sale and it is sure to be great event once again this year. The weekend’s events will be split between Campbellford/ Trenton and Lindsay, Ontario. Be sure to attend the annual business meeting at which you will have a chance to take part in setting direction for the Association for the upcoming year. There will be three positions on the National board that will be filled as well so if you have an interest in helping decide who you would like to represent our Association, this is your chance. You should have received your meeting notifications in the mail as well as proposed changes to our bylaws.
En ce qui concerne les Blondes – en écrivant ce mot nous sommes à environ un mois de l’AGA nationale et l’Exposition/ Vente, ça sera surement un grand événement encore une fois de plus cette année. Les événements de la fin de semaine seront répartis entre Campbellford / Trenton et Lindsay en Ontario. Soyez présent à l’assemblée annuelle, à laquelle, vous aurez l’occasion de prendre part aux décisions de l’Association pour l’année à venir. Il y aura trois postes à combler au niveau du conseil national, c’est votre chance de démontrer votre intérêt à élire les représentants que vous voulez pour représenter notre association. Vous devriez avoir déjà reçu vos avis de convocation de réunion par la poste ainsi que les changements proposés à nos règlements.
In my opinion the offering for the Cream of the Crop Sale is one of the strongest in several years with many breeders representing their programs with the best genetics in the breed. This is perfect timing with the future looking really strong industry wide, so bring your cheque books and don’t be afraid to wave your hands around a little bit. Also, be sure to pass on a big thank you to the Ontario Board and National Committee when you get a chance for putting on this great event.
À mon avis, je crois que les sujets à vendre au « Cream of the Crop » est l’un des meilleurs de- puis plusieurs années avec de nombreux éleveurs représentant leurs programmes avec la meilleure génétique de la race. Le timing est parfait considérant que l’avenir s’annonce vraiment fort à l’échelle de l’industrie, apportez votre carnet de chèques et n’hésitez pas d’agiter vos mains un peu. Aussi, ne vous gênez pas de remercier les membres de l’Ontario et ceux de la Canadienne pour avoir organisé ce grand événement.
The Ontario show circuit is in full swing as well now and I have been trying to keep track of who’s winning what on Facebook. Thanks to all of the good folks out east for posting lots of pictures for all of us westerners who don’t have any summer blonde shows. Lindsay will be the crown jewel again this year as the national champions are determined. Who will the big winners be? Hope to see you all there to find out!

Merci à tous les gens de l’Est qui affiche beaucoup de photos pour nous les éleveurs de l’Ouest qui ne disposent pas de spectacle d’été de Blondes. It has been a tough summer for cattleman in many parts of Alberta, and many of us have had other worries on our mind since the last newsletter, so I don’t have a lot to report. Rainfall has been less than half of long term averages, causing pasture and hay yields to suffer. I would also like to take this time to wish several of our long time members all the best as they work through health issues. On the positive side, cattle prices have remained relatively strong through the drought and crop yields look ok, providing silage and straw for alternate winter feed supplies. Little Creek Farms (Kamelchuks) and Willow Springs Stock Farm (Rigneys) plan to have cattle entered at Edmonton Farmfair International. The Blondes will be showing on Wednesday November 11 beginning at 5 pm (Multi Breed Show), but if you can’t make that date the cattle will be on display until Saturday November 14th. The Alberta Blonde AGM is scheduled for Saturday November 21st (1 pm) at the home of Reed & Michelle Rigney. Lunch will be provided or may possibly be Pot luck depending on numbers attending. As usual marketing our breed will be a major topic of discussion as will the 2016 National Show and Meeting that we plan to host in the fall of 2016. We also welcome our members to put their names forward for the Board of Directors which currently has six members (maximum of seven), however two members are up for reelection and may not let their names stand. Saturday November 21st will also be the official reception day of bulls entering the Alberta Blonde Bull Test, however early arrivals will be accommodated. The test will also be held at the Rigney farm. There is some discussion regarding the cost effectiveness of the test for 2015-16 due to feed prices, so if anyone would like to enter bulls or like more information, please contact Reed Rigney ASAP.

It’s almost here, hard to believe another year has passed by so quickly! The final preparations are being made, The Ontario Board of Directors is looking forward to hosting The 2015 Canadian National Show, Sale and AGM Sept.25th27th. The Cream of the Crop Sales catalogues are out, lots of great cattle being offered in this sale, don’t miss out. We targeted anyone in the past 5 years that purchased a blonde to receive a catalogue with the help of CLRC. Please contact a board member if you need assistance or information on any of the events for the upcoming Canadian Nationals. The Ontario board created a new business card which features a picture from Peter Lagois’ commercial herd, of a cow and many blonde cross calves around her and on the reverse side includes our website information. We’ll use the cards for handouts at various events throughout the province, to help promote the breed. Thanks to Eric Doran for this project and Peter Lagois for the picture. Some pictures have surfaced from our annual picnic on the website and on our facebook page. Thank you to Eric, Chris and Joyce Doran for your hospitality and efforts for making it a great day! We were able to maneuver around the rain to visit with friends, view the Bogart Cattle plus have an advance viewing from the western sale entries that arrived early. With some tents for cover, we managed to keep fairly dry and enjoyed some great food (roast beef!) and desserts with great company and talked shop and blonde cattle! The rain gave way for some sunshine in time for our mini auction. Dave McNevan took his usual post, taking the bids while Eric displayed the items! Thanks to Bob and Muriel Thomas who donated 2 vintage signs that were used by an early Ontario Board at the Royal Winter fair. The first sign was for a free daily draw of 5 straws of semen, this was a hot item, made for a bidding war! Gary Young came out on top, not sure how he took possession with Eric being spotted later at street corners holding the sign, even fighting for space! The Second sign was for a free OBdA hat with a donation of $3.50! Tyler Sutcliff became the new owner, along with our famous pitchfork, which mysteriously appeared in time for our picnic. I feel sorry for the previous purchaser (Paul Fee) who never claimed custody of the fork! The fair season has started with Campbellford August 9., six breeders and twenty six head were exhibited. The Show point system is off and running, Grand Champion bull went to Bogart Captain Crunch, Reserve went to Donaleen Chachi. Grand Champion female went to Franmar Crystal, with Reserve going to Donaleen Bramalea. Breeders herd and Get of Sire
went to Donaleen Blondes. Thanks to Kirk McGee for some great pictures on our website and facebook page. Upcoming fairs include Coe Hill, Orono and Warkworth. There are too many conflicting stories to write a good spiel on the weather this year. Parts of Saskatchewan had very dry conditions to the point that pastures were chewed to the ground and hay was sparse. Then a few rains came and improved the pastures until they were better BUT the hay crop was still desperately short of a normal year. Grain fared much better with yields being average to adequate as far as what is now coming off. The difference is, here all the cereal crop straw is being baled, at least all with a conventional combine where they are able to pick the straw up. Manitoba, on the other hand is split, with the Northern part being dry, the southern part drowning in rain. The hay got started late mainly because of frost, then some rain later. As the hay crop was almost ready to cut, the rains started and it has been a challenge for most to get it baled up. There is also a lot of green feed and straw being baled as any feed is better than snowballs. One can always supplement with grain or pellets. The Douglas Test station will be accepting bulls starting Oct 5th to 9th. This is the last year for the present Stationmaster, so we sincerely hope there is a good turnout of animals. The price of cattle remains high with the prospect of that lasting for some time as the stats are saying that the herd size in Canada is down. Fuel is also down so operations of machinery are less costly this year. However the south parts of Man/Sask experienced a real bust when the oil income dipped. Hundreds of jobs were lost and the economy nosedived severely. As in all things, we pull up our socks and make the best of it. Stay safe this fall.
QUEBEC Nouvelles de l’Association Blonde d’Aquitaine du Québec Le 28 mars 2015 nous avons eu l’assemblée annuelle des membres, Gilbert Gauthier a été réélu président, Clémence Landry vice-présidente et les directeurs sont L. Pierre Léger, Sébastien Desgagnés, Laurent Desrosiers et Ryland Cleary. Le pique-nique annuel des membres a eu lieu au Ranch St-Hubert de St-Herménégilde située dans la MRC de Coaticook en Estrie. La bouffe et la compagnie a été très bon mais nous espérons qu’il y aura plus de participants l’année prochaine. Pour l’Expo Bœuf (Victo) 2015 cette année, les membres présents à l’assemblée annuelle de l’Association Blonde d’Aquitaine du Québec ont adoptés un moratoire pour l’année 2015 qui est d’accepter des animaux purs sangs à 94-99 % au jugement. Sur le certificat d’enregistrement de l’animal il devra avoir la lettre R ou D pour être accepté au jugement. Nous espérons que ce moratoire encouragera plus d’éleveurs à y participer. Aussi à l’Expo Bœuf 2015, il y aura un salon ouvert aux éleveurs qui désire faire la promotion de leur troupeau mais qui ne veulent pas participer au jugement. News from the Québec Blonde d’Aquitaine Association On March 28th, 2015 we held the Québec annual general meeting, Gilbert Gauthier was reelected President , Clémence Landry VicePresident and the directors are Ryland Cleary, Sébastien Desgagnés, Laurent Desrosiers and L. Pierre Léger. The annual picnic was held at the Ranch StHubert in St-Herménégilde located in the MRC of Coaticook in the Eastern Townships. The food and the company was great, hopefully next year we will have more breeders attending.In
regards to Expo Boeuf (Victoriaville) 2015, the members present at the annual meeting of the Québec Blonde d’Aquitaine Association adopted a moratorium for 2015 which is to accept pure blood animals 94-99% in the judgment. On the animal’s registration certificate it must have the letters R or D to be accepted in the judgment. We hope that this moratorium will encourage more breeders to participate in this year’s show. Equally at Expo Boeuf 2015, there will be a separate show room for commercial breeders who wish to promote their cattle without participating in the judgement. Once again this year, the Association is preparing to place an order of French bull’s semen straws from Genetics Foundation who are the designated representatives of Evolution International (formerly Sersia France).
