As we move into the year 2012, which marks the 50th Anniversary milestone for Red Angus cattle in Canada, we have an abundance of things to be thankful for. I am thankful to my Dad and my Uncles - Rod, Ted, Don and Ken - and my Grandpa Rod for having the vision five decades ago to bring these glorious Red colored Angus to our great country! 50 years at one task is amazing to say the least. I am thankful to have my Mom’s fire and passion and my Dad’s strong values which have enabled me to carry on and overcome the hardships and adversities that were thrown our way the last few years. I am also thankful for our strong family that we have - four healthy kids and one very patient, kind and strong wife who supported me through it all. I am looking forward to the day when our two little ones get on the bus with the older two so I can do this task of raising our cattle with her beside me once again!

I am thankful for all the cattle people who have survived the business and hung onto their cows since May 20th of 2003. Justin, Allan, Frank, Darren and Brant at FMA (or SALE) all say they have just recently discovered that the majority of their customers have teeth! The staff at FMA have seen them once again because it’s fun and fashionable to go to the auction market and everyone is smilin’ in 2012!

Things look very, very good to be a cowman right now but I do want to point out one thing about our bull sale - we have not increased the number of bulls at all just because prices are strong. We have kept up with our culling all along, especially on the bull calves. Just because they are born with a set of nuts doesn’t mean they get to keep ‘em automatically and be marketed as a bull. changes in the 2012 Brylor Bull sale catalogue: • We have included the Brylor semen sales portion in the back on pages 38 40 for our semen customers’ shopping convenience • Also, we have a new delivery policy we are implementing in 2012 to get back to more of a commercial cowman’s way of doing things. For years now I’ve stated that 99.9% of the commercial cowboys know it takes three things to go to the bull sale - 1) your catalogue, 2) your checkbook, and 3) your trailer!!

We would geatly appreciate it if you could bring your own trailer but if you absolutely cannot bring it or you are a “SUS” buyer (Sight Unseen) or going on export down south, then we will help out in any way we can; otherwise... the new settlement table look will be in this order, though, in 2012: Starting on the left - The sale clerks to take settlement and transfer instructions In the middle - Brenda of Pincher Creek Agencies to insure your new purchases On the right - Kody Kropius, our trucker buddy, to help you get your bulls home within a few days of the sale.

No bulls, other than the export bulls that require health testing, will be going back to stauffer Ranches this year. We know and trust that all of our commercial customers can understand this new policy because that is the way it happens every day at every auction market in the country after a sale.

2012 littlE rOyal Total ticket sales minus purchase price of the quad goes towards the Little Royal Scholarship fund to be given to a son or daughter of a Brylor Ranch bull customer that is currently attending university/college or is in Grade 12 and will be starting later this fall.

The quad will be auctioned “Dutch Auction” style at the start of the Bull Sale (see Auction Procedure outlined below).

Scholarship Applications - Applicants must forward a resumé outlining future plans of future education to Sherry Mackenzie.

AUCTION PROCEDURE 1.

The final bid in each round will denote the amount of that bidder’s donation - e.g. Round 1 Final Bid is $300.00 to John Doe. John’s donation is $300.00 Round 2 Final bid is $250.00 to Tom Jones.

Tom’s Donation is $250.00 Round 3 The Female is re-auctioned on a downward scale until no further bids are received at the low of $10 2. Each $10 purchased (donated) represents one chance in the final draw, e.g. John Doe has 30 chances, Tom Jones has 25 chances and so on down the scale to the final $10.00 donation worth one chance each.

3. One ticket for every $10.00, bearing the contributor’s name will be put into the draw barrel.

4. At the end of the sale, one ticket will be drawn with that person winning the “Polaris 2012 Sportsman 500 Image” quad!!

My name is Shelby Weiss, I am 20 years old and have lived on the Diamond K Cattle Co. Ltd. for the first 18 years of my life. The past two years I have attended Lethbridge College completing the first half of the bachelor of nursing program. The Diamond K Cattle Company is situated 18 miles southwest of Maple Creek, SK, in the heart of the Cypress Hills. I enrolled in 4-H at the young age of nine and continued pursuing this until I was 17 years of age. I have shown many breeds of cattle including Hereford, Charolais and Red Angus. Being a part of a 4-H club for eight years has enabled me to develop many life skills such as leadership, communication and a compassionate attitude towards animals.

These life skills have been of great help in achieving academic and personal standing within my university degree program.

I am currently pursuing a career in nursing at the University of Lethbridge. Once I complete the RN program I believe that many doors will be open for me to pursue my careerrural Saskatchewan or Alberta. It is very important to me to be able to stay close the area where I grew up and developed a love of animals and the rural way of life.

RILEY HANSEN

My name is Riley Hansen. I am 19 years old and currently attending the Lethbridge College trying to find my dream career. I enjoy many outdoor activities, especially hockey and hiking. I grew up on a farm 20 miles southwest of Cardston,one of the most beautiful places on this planet - filled with many trees and rolling hills, right on the face of Ol’ Chief.

Growing up out here has to be one of the best experiences. I have always had a love of the land and the farm has given me the opportunity to develop skills that will help me in the future. My grandfather started raising cattle when he took over the family farm in the early 1950’s and the farm has now grown to operating and maintaining just over 350 head of cattle.

Going to college in Lethbridge has made me realize how important the farm has been to me and although I am only in Lethbridge, I miss the farm and love coming home on weekends to help out. Although my future goals are not currently set, I am considering becoming a geologist as I enjoy learning about the earth and have concluded that I want to have a job that is related to Earth Sciences or the Environment. Once my career is established, I would like to, someday, come back to the ranch.

My name is Morgan Claypool. I grew up on a cow/calf operation 40 kilometers north of Pincher Creek. Growing up on a ranch in rural Alberta has instilled good values and I have learned many skills that have helped me in all aspects of my life. I have been involved in many community and school activities over the years including high school rodeo and team sports. In all of these I have been determined and hardworking, always trying to achieve the goals I set out for myself. I have gained many valuable lessons from being able to participate in such a wide variety of activities.

Currently I am a grade twelve student attending Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek. I have attained Honour Roll status throughout my schooling. I have received Academic Awards including Grade 7, 8, and 9 English Language Arts Highest Academic Award, Grade 10 Highest Academic Average, and the Grade 11 Biology Award.

My future plans include becoming a Respiratory Therapist. I have applied to SAIT, NAIT, and Thompson Rivers University. The Respiratory Therapy Program is a difficult program to get into and I am currently working very hard to continue to obtain the required marks. I have been accepted into the selection process at all three schools.

My name is Taylorre Weiss and I was born and raised on the Diamond K Cattle Co. ranch South West of Maple Creek, SK., at the base of the beautiful Cypress Hills. This upbringing has instilled many life skills and lessons such as work ethic, patience and respect for others. My earliest childhood memories of living on the ranch are being dad’s chore helper in the feed truck, watching the Prairie Farm report at lunch and making sure all ranch operations run smoothly of course!

This is about the time when I first became involved in 4-H at the age of 6 years from which my passion for animals continues. Besides 4-H, I have been involved in many other clubs and organizations, all of which have provided me with the ability to lead and the confidence to reach my potential.

Currently I am living in Lethbridge, AB., completing my second year in the registered nursing program where the opportunities and possibilities are endless. This career can take me anywhere in the world but in the back of my mind I am still hoping our new hospital will be built soon and I can return to my hometown of Maple Creek and combine both of my passions in one place.

REFERENCE SIRE A - Red Fine Line Mulberry 26P What an absolutely amazing career this grand ol’ bull has had! He’s had just about every adjective in the book used to describe him and he’s the only Red Angus bull in the world that has had a theme sale formed from his progeny alone.

In October of 2011 in Emporia, Kansas, the “one of a kind” event called “Mulberry Mayhem” took place with 52 lots of Mulberry sired live cattle, embryos and a few extra treats averaging a little under $7000! Mulberry truly is the most prized, cherished and valuable bull ever in the history of the breed when, literally, a tiny piece of him (an ear notch from which to create the exact genetic replica or clone) sold for $37,000! His last semen in the U.S. also sold in that event with 200 straws averaging $208/straw.

He is officially off the market in most countries now but Mulberry is still alive and will live out his days at Brylor Ranch with his sons and daughters now creating their own legendary status, too.

Long before Mulberry came along, there was “a bull who did nothing wrong” called New Trend 22D. Little did we know at the time the near perfect mating would be Mulberry on a New Trend daughter! In fact most any bull crosses up well with the famous daughters of this 1994 born bull. We have used him now for 18 years in a row and have several more E.T. calves born in 2012 again. 18 bulls in this year’s sale have New Trend dams but that’s not surprising as we have 31 direct daughters in our herd!

The best New Trend son ever produced was raised by Kurt Rich of Iowa and made his appearance in Denver this year.

Here are the first sons to sell from a new bull to the Red Angus scene in Canada. A few years back when we sold Toast to Biebers, I saw this bull in person... and his dam. I rarely use a bull I don’t own so I purchased the Canadian rights on him and am extremely happy with the results. His sons are very deep sided, hairy, big nutted and very performance oriented. His dam also produced the Makin’ Hay 9913 bull who had three sons sell in our 2011 Bull Sale to average $25,000.

Roughrider is off the market now and we have limited semen left on him.

Since being our high seller and syndicated bull in 2009 at $85,000 Big Rock has left a mark on thie industry with sons topping sales in 2011 at Lewis Farms, WRAZ, and Diamond T. Daughters have sold for $16,000 at Damars’ and $11,000 at Red Round-up last fall from SSS. Also a daughter topped the breds at the “Cowgirls” Sale at $13,000 and another son also sold very last in the Brylor 40th Bull Sale at $9250 to Leroy Browlee as a herdsire.

Our syndicate bull a couple of years back when he sold for $28,500 to Soo Line to breed a group of their dispersal cows. Some folks believe he was the very undersold sleeper of their wild dispersal that fall at $15,000 to Clay Enterprises of Wapella, SK. A maternal brother to West Jet sold to Nick & Lorraine VanGaalen last spring at $6500. We have several E.T. calves by West Jet on the ground in 2012.

The sire of these three bulls, Red Knight 640F, was the Grand Champion Bull at Farmfair and Agribition as a yearling in 1997. His daughters are of legendary status, as well, in our breed. –EL, Terron, and Chicadee based their programs around him.

We have been extremely patient for this kind of a calf to come along (50 years in fact) and now the day has arrived! Kodiak 204Y will be one of the most talked about bulls in the entire country this bull sale season. Not only does he have one of the most sought after pedigrees to ever come along from the blacks through his amazing sire Kodiak 5R, his dam is truly one of the great cows of the breed as well. So we have to be a little more patient being as he is a Black/Red Carrier ... the wait will be worth it when we get red calves from him in 2013. We have big, big plans for Kodiak 204Y in our program.

Kodiak 5R was the WAF Premiere sire award winner in 2009 at Spruce Meadows on the black side. He originally sold at Agribition for $45,000 to Sooline and Geis. He then traded in Denver last year at $150,000. His son Tiger, was the Grand Champion Bull at WAF, Farmfair and Agribition in 2009.

Kodiak is the best breeding black bull in Canada right now.

A full sister to Kodiak 204Y was chosen as the 2011 pick of the Brylor ET heifer calves by Garth Griffin in Iowa for $11,500. We have two more full ET sisters in the replacement pen that are both very good too. The dam, Lakme 70M, has been remarkable to say the least! Kind of cool that he has the same tattoo as his sister, 204S. I believe the overall impact this bull will create in the industry will be left forever. Buying a share in this calf could be one of those “looking back and reflecting moments” you talk about 10 - 20 - 30 years from now. Everyone needs to come to Fort Macleod on March 29th to see this bull.

As just a baby calf one month old, Kent McCune found this tag, 50Y, in our two year old pen of cows and calves “quite handily” he stated. When I implanted 20 embryos from this mating into Little Royal heifers in 2010, I wanted more bulls than heifers but that proved out the other way - 9 heifers and 1 bull later we got 50Y! His dam, 33M, is a half interest $15,000 ten year old cow now at Griffins in Iowa. She is a maternal sister to Mlberry. Coupled with the 70M son called Pasqulae and you get Eberle 50Y. His namesake, Jordan Eberle (#14 now with the Edmonton Oilers) single handedly stole the show in the 2008 World Junior’s Tournament against the Russians. Both these Eberle guys will be fun to watch in the future!

Here is the last trio of full E.T. brothers to sell today in the 41st Annual Brylor Ranch Red Angus Bull Sale. They all display fantastic hair coats, big solid feet and nuts and big time muscle. All three have great dispositions and are royally bred. The sire, Mulberry 26P, has been a living legend through his sons and daughters for several years now after he was a magnificent champion in the show ring. Books will be written about him and money will be made through his offspring such as Lots #63 - #65.

The dam, 22L, was a former high seller in “Tradition With A Vision” 2008 at $10,000 to JK& Fair Acres. A full sister 22L raised in Kansas went on to be named Reserve Grand Champion Female in Denver in 2010. Six full sisters to these three bulls have sold to average $9650. See another full brother in Lot #119 today, an October E.T. son weighing nearly 1700 lbs. in February at 16 months of age. The dam to Makn’ Waves 39X, last years high seller and Denver 2012 Reserve Junior Champion Bull, is a full full sister as well.

He’s extra deep dark cherry red and has seen many a cowboy this winter expound praise upon him! Both our auctioneer and photographer really liked him a lot.

The dam to 100Y is the $31,000 1/2 interest cow, 66K. She as also dam to the $92,000 Master Plan 17M bull and the $20,000 Agribition Reserve Champion Female at Agribition in 2008, Bonita 204T at Blairs.Ag. Interestingly enough, 100Y was orphaned this summer in July as 66K couldn’t take the heat wave in southern Kansas in the summer of 2011. Fort Knox 100Y is a pretty decent way for old 66K to end her career as we have no embryos left from her.

Last year Lots #1 - #5 were five full ET brothers to this bull. They averaged $8600 on the five of them. A full sister 2T, was the $56,700 heifer in “Tradition With A Vision” ‘08 to Michigan, and a half brother called Stringer 29S sold for $12,000. Mark Chriss in Oregon paid $24,000 for 1/2 of 706P in TWAV 2011 last fall and now has yet another full brother to 203X on the ground in 2012.

Olivia 706P will be flushed again in 2012 as her embryos hold the Red Round-up record at $7500 for a package of three last fall. What a cow she is!

I normally wouldn’t point out a birth date on a two year old because there is not much difference between a 23 - 25 month old bull at this stage ... but ... when we’re talking an October born bull such as Boulevard 124X is. He holds his own in this group and is 6 - 8 months younger.

• HERd BULL TiME... BiG TiME HERE! • SELLiNG 1/2 iNTEREST ANd FULL POSSESSiON An ET son of one of the best cows in captivity in either Canada or the USA - 22L has done it time and time and time again, not only for us but for our customers, JK Cattle and Fair Acres. She sold in “Tradition With A Vision” at $10,000 to them in 2008 and has not looked back since. She had a heifer calf, 19U, at side that day, by Mulberry, that brought $7500 for half interest to WRAZ. 19U went on to win Heifer Calf Champion at Farmfair and Agribition that same fall and then her division at the World Angus Forum. She also produced the $47,500 Makn’ Waves 39X bull (see the back cover today). 22L has produced several ET calves for JK now including 7 heifers that have sold to gross $63,500.
