President’s Message
Message de la Présidente
Well it sure is nice to have some green grass showing finally after an interesting calving season. With grass it means a new breeding season is here and it is good to know that there are quite a few new blonde bulls out on the pastures this year. From what I have heard blonde bulls have been in increased demand all across the country, with many breeders being sold out and working together to try to find bulls for potential clients. That is great news and it is really uplifting to hear.
As much as I am excited about a nice summer coming up with watching the calves grow in the pasture, haying and long summer days - September means the AGM, National Show and Sale. I am looking forward to heading back to Lindsey, Ontario as I know that it will be a great time once again. I want to encourage everyone that can make the trip out to come and be part of the weekends’ activities. That being said, be sure to check out the information in this newsletter for the agenda and with respect to sending in any proposed changes to our bylaws. Also, have a walk through your herds to pick out your entries for the Cream of the Crop sale and the National Show. Prices are excellent right now and it looks like they will carry into the fall season so it will be a good time to showcase your breeding programs in both the show and sale rings. On the performance recording front, take the time to consider getting involved in BIO. Your board has once again agreed to cover the expense of a BIO membership that will cover the costs for any member that is interested in getting their cattle into the recording system. This is an opportunity that I want to encourage everyone who is not already involved in to be part of as it will strengthen the reliability of the EPDs for our breed and our position in the marketplace. That being said, I hope you enjoy the summer newsletter!

news ALBERTA / BRITISH COLUMBIA
from the
The 2014-15 Alberta Blonde bull test is complete. A bull consigned by Little Creek Farms led the way almost from start to finish. This Purebred son of Arsha’s Polled Umpire gained 4.13 lbs/day and also led in the WPDA category at 3.43 lbs/ day. Only one Blonde bull in Canada out-gained him this year and that was a bull in Manitoba consigned by Pat Filz and Don Mehler. That bull was sired by an Alberta bred bull (West Winds Underwood) and gained 4.17 lbs/day. Second and third for gain in Alberta (3.93 & 3.66 lbs/day ) were polled Purebred sons of Forty Acre Troy consigned by Spruce Vale Blondes. Full results are available on the Canadian Blonde website. We were also encouraged by the interest from local commercial breeders in these bulls and for the second year several were sold directly to local producers. Alberta is planning to host the 2016 National Blonde Show & AGM. More details will be forwarded in the spring of 2016, but we expect to hold the event the first weekend in October during the Olds Fall Classic Livestock Show (as in 2013). Olds is a great town and the staff at the show were excellent to work with. So plan to be with us, and good luck to Ontario in hosting the 2015 National.
MANITOBA / SASKATCHEWAN
The Man/Sask Association continues to move along with meetings once a year in April. The meetings are for business, yes, but we do indeed enjoy the company of persons who have a similar interest and can tell some cow stories. The prospect of having two new people joining in the coming year is something we are looking forward to as we sure could use more members. This has been a very open spring for all of us that grain farm as well as cattle ranch. Seeding is far ahead of the average here with only one major storm going though to slow it down. That was a blessing to all of us that ranch as the spring rains were slow to non-existent to start
provinces
with and you know that we need rains to get the grass growing. The weather forecast for an El Nino is not looking so good for the prairies and that means a dry, hot summer. Calving as per usual has had its ups and downs. Most of the cows are done, even for the commercial guys. It is so neat to see all the little ones out and bouncing around. Once the snow is gone, the tendency to set them out in pasture is strong but it is not a great idea to send them out until the grass has a chance to get ahead of them. Sincerely hope that your calving season was a success and that all is well on your ranch.
ONTARIO The Ontario Blonde Association held its AGM March 28, 2015. I think it’s been the biggest turnout of members in a while! No snowstorm this year to keep members at home. Great company, lots of stories, some stretched a little, Mr. Fee purchasing the famous pitchfork from our mini auction again, it seems to have gone missing after dinner, not sure if Paul has put a reward on its return or not! It has made an enormous amount of money for the Association thus far. During the course of our meeting I presented on behalf of Blonde Breeders from across the country a package of letters, cards and donations for the setback of a barn fire to John Vink (Ilse was at work). Thanks to everyone who contributed. Nominations for the President and Directors positions were made. With three new young guns on the board, Kirk McGee, Eric Doran and Jeremy DeWeerd joining Nicholas Boyd, Paul Ferguson, Paul Fee and myself making your 2015/16 Board of Directors. Unfortunately, we say somewhat of a goodbye to three/four outstanding board members who are stepping down from their positions but I’m sure we can seek their advice any time! A special THANK YOU to Ashley McNevan, Dennis and Debbie Elliott and lastly Dave McNevan. The endless things you all have done and continue to do for the membership and the Blonde breed you care deeply about, Thanks a bunch! The new board has accepted the invitation to host the 2015 Canadian National AGM Show and Sale. Plans are underway for this event. More details elsewhere in this newsletter or contact Nicholas Boyd the Sales Committee Chair or Eric Doran who is looking after sales entries. Please get your consignments in on time, so we can promote your sales animals to the max. With cattle prices at an all
time high and still doesn’t seem to be any leveling off of these markets. It’s great to be in the beef business when sale day comes! The Ontario Blonde d’Aquitaine Association is looking for a raffle heifer again. What a great way to promote your breeding program. This helps us support our 4-H members who in turn showcase ournbreed. If you’d like tickets on the raffle heifer or are willing to sell a book or two, please contact a board member. We’re more than willing to get those out to you! Contact any one of us with your concerns or if you want to volunteer for one of our events. Check out our new website or facebook page for updates. We need some of your pictures too. All Board minutes will be posted ASAP to the website, contact a board member for the password. Thanks to Eric , Chris and Joyce Doran (Bogart Blondes) for hosting our annual picnic this summer, Saturday July 25th in Tweed, looking forward to a great day and the return of the fork for our mini auction! The board will be looking for a picnic host for next year, let us know if you’d like to showcase your cattle off to the province. In closing, I don’t think there is any other breed to compare our Blonde d’Aquitaine to. The Blondes cover so many bases from calving ease, growth, adding extra hip and muscle, feed conversion, increase in lean meat yield, increase ribeyes, tenderness and even the veal market. Wow, impressive, so whatever your operation I hope everyone has a successful calving season with some great calves to showcase the breed off at as many fairs and auctions as possible!

A QUOI BON ?
RUNNING of the BULL
VS
by Pat Fitz
One of our herd sires, Zorro, was tested for semen count two weeks ago. He was found to have pus in his, so was given an expensive shot of antibiotic to clear it up.... hopefully. We were told to wait two weeks or more and come back for a retest. So we did. Yesterday: We set up Zorro and another bull called Amigo for a test. Amigo is a secondary herdsire, he was used a bit last year. He is for a spare or we may need him to replace Zorro. Therefore the idea is to take both bulls to Carlyle to be tested. Between loading them up after doing regular morning chores, we expected a busy day. As I have an appointment at the same time the bull tests are scheduled for, I take off in my direction and Don and Dan go to Carlyle to the vet. Both of the bulls passed! Zorro was clean and 93% viable; Amigo was 95%, very good. Then Amigo escaped and they had a rodeo in Carlyle; bull loose in town! Heheh Our cattle trailer has two compartments. Zorro got done first; he got in the front part. Each man swears they saw the back door was propped open so that Amigo could jump in the back. The devil gave a gust of wind & the door blew aside and off he went! There was no thanks given to God for a clean slate for the bulls so run, you beggars, run! They spent a fine old time chasing the bull, my guys, the vet, her assistants and some other bystanders. The bull dented the front bumper of the truck a tad. They finally got some vehicles lined up so they could make an alley to chase Amigo back into the loading chute. When they finally got him corralled, they made darn sure there was a MAN at the door, not a prop! sooooo ssososo flipping grateful I was in Estevan but hell of a story to have missed participating in. Wonder if anyone had a camera or phone to video the action? By the way, Don is sure stiff and aching this morning. Said he hasn’t run this much since the time a few years ago we had a butcher heifer escape, but that is a previous story!
