From the Association SALERS Hi and welcome to 2014! I would like to thank all the SAC directors for their work this past year. Tammi McGee, Brad Dunn, Ray Depalme, John Nikkel and our new guy, David Wright. Gerald McGee and Ken Sweetland retired from the board this past summer. Thanks for your years of service and contributions to the Salers breed. Our registrar Lois Chivilo has moved on to take a full-time position with the Canadian Charolais Association. Thanks Lois for all your hard work and good humour. The SAC’s new registrar is Shauna Bushfield. I know Shauna will be a capable and dedicated registrar for our members. The Salers Assoc. of Canada AGM was in Winnipeg last summer. Ken and Wendy Sweetland did all the heavy lifting to make the trip to Winnipeg very enjoyable; the boat cruise on the Red and Assiniboine Rivers and then dinner at the Spaghetti Factory was a high light for me that weekend. I was lucky enough to be able to make the trip to Expo Boeuf in October. The Salers show was a resounding success. Thanks to all the Salers breeders from Eastern Canada who made this event so memorable. This year the Salers Assoc. AGM will be in Saskatoon Sk. I know Salers breeders are all busy with their own work, but I urge you try to put Saskatoon, the weekend of June 28 and 29, 2014, on your agenda. I know you will have a great time. Happy calving!

Commercial Breeder of the Year ~ Marvin Betker ~
Salers offer the “whole package” for Marvin Betker By Kate Bollum
Amongst the rolling hills and small fishing lakes of Leask, Saskatchewan, Marvin Betker runs his commercial cattle herd where Salers genetics have played a major part in his ongoing success.
with traits that fit perfectly into his herd. The calving ease, fertility, and vigour that they offer is what keeps him coming back to Salers.
Marvin started out with Salers, as he found them to have good hair and feet, they’re easy to work with, and they fit with what he does. He says he got lucky in choosing Salers, saying, “I just gave up and hung up my calf puller- there was no need to keep it around.” He enjoys Salers because they’re a maternal breed with a large pelvis that allows easy calving, even with a heavily muscled sire, which reduces time and labour costsmaking them the ideal solution to a busy farmer’s needs. He finds Salers offer the commercial producer the whole package,
“Well, I don’t know much about giving advice. Just do whatever you enjoy, that’s about it. I was lucky enough to like cattle!”
12
Salers Canada 2014
Marvin has about 2,300 acres, most of which is pasture, and also grows green feed for his cattle. He uses both AI and natural
breeding, but finds using a bull is easier and more time efficient. He winters the cows with hay and green feed, and also feeds the calves grain. He winters the calves until around January or February, and then markets them. Buyers come out from Prince Albert to look at the cattle on the ranch. Marvin doesn’t have the need to advertise, as buyers come to him. He finds that a good past reputation brings buyers back every year to bid again on his feeder calves in the fall. Marvin claims the only problem with the Salers business is that the number of breeders is dwindling and those who are left aren’t promoting enough. He wants to find a way to entice people to step up and take the reins in order for the Salers business to prosper.
He can’t exactly put his finger on why more producers aren’t using Salers genetics. The only thing he could think of is that they had a reputation for being wild when they first came over, but “feels producers have taken care of that, it’s just not the case anymore. They’re just as good to work with as any other breed.” Putting up the feed in the winter and summer is his biggest concern; however seeing all the calves frolicking in the spring makes it all worth it. He admits he’s not in it for the money - even when prices are up, it’s still not great considering the cost of everything else.
Rather, he does it because of his love for his Salers cattle. He enjoys walking in the pasture and having all the cattle gather around him, and perhaps petting the odd one. He finds being out with them lots keeps them very docile. Betker is adamant in his effort to sell bulls with good docility, and gives a few of his favourites extra attention to keep them calm and tame. Marvin believes, “Salers are nice, quiet animals, and the breeder I buy them from, well, they are more like pets when they come to my place!”
Most of his bulls come from Elderberry Farms in Parkside, Saskatchewan. “They bring their bulls along gently, and when they come, they are ready to work. They are truly friendly and in my case, very patient, as I sometimes look at the bulls three or four times before I decide.” When asked if he had any advice to pass on, he laughs and says, “Well, I don’t know much about giving advice. Just do whatever you enjoy, that’s about it. I was lucky enough to like cattle!”

Breeder of the Year ~ Sky West Salers
Shady Ridge Stock Farm and Sky West Land & Cattle programs were merged and now Ray & Travis both operate under Sky West Salers. The land base is six quarters, comprised of 500 acres cereal crops, 200 acres hay, and 300 acres pasture. Additional pasture and cropland is rented. In 2013, 130 cows were calved out, with three quarters of the calves born in May. In past years, an annual bull sale was held in conjunction with another breeder, but Depalmes now sell about 20 bulls a year private treaty. Last year 24 bulls were sold, and the plan is to market 40-50 a year in the future. The Depalmes advertise in local and national media; however a good portion of sales are due to referral and word of mouth. They have a website presence, but believe that strong customer service and relations goes a long way in selling bulls.
The Depalme family - Ray & Doreen, Travis & Dana along with sons Parker and Reid
By Kate Bollum The Salers Association of Canada’s Breeder of the Year is one of the breeds most involved long-time Salers families.
concludes, “We were very fortunate to have good cattle early on, which opened a lot of doors for us.”
Ray and Doreen Depalme were married in 1969 and took over Ray’s father’s farm near Red Deer, Alberta, in 1972. Doreen’s uncle, Jim Haldane, introduced the Depalmes to Salers cattle. The first Salers bull imported to Canada, “Valiant,” had been sold to a Calgary consortium Ten Star Breeders of Calgary, and Jim happened to be one of the ten. After having lunch with Jim and Phil Tetrault, who had a large part in establishing and promoting Salers in the early years, the Depalmes got into the Salers business as well. Selling off the feedlot cattle in 1973, they purchased 20 foundation half-blood females and have not looked back since.
Ray and Doreen have three children: Travis, Adele, and Natalie. All three were active in the farm operation growing up and had numerous Salers steer and heifer projects. After graduating from Olds College and Montana State University with an Ag. Degree, Travis returned to the farm, and got involved in the livestock breeding program and started “Sky West Land and Cattle.” Travis continued with Salers cattle, having bought his first group of cows at age 16. Travis and wife, Dana, have two sons: Reid (13) and Parker (9). Both are following in their father’s footsteps, and have heifer, steer, and carcass projects.
The herd grew slowly and by the time 10 years had passed, there were about 100 females in production. Six were imports from France, as well as two imported bulls. Artificial insemination and embryo transplanting played a large part of the expansion plan in the early years, plus a whole lot of time up and down the show road. The SR prefix of Shady Ridge Stock Farm experienced success in these times, and Ray
Travis also works off the farm, making their schedule extra busy, which can sometimes make it challenging to balance family and farming. He adds, “There will always be jobs that come with farm life, like vaccinating and weaning, and then you add 4H and hockey on top. It’s hard to find that perfect balance- you have to learn to juggle a lot of commitments.”
18
Salers Canada 2014
After Travis started working off the farm, the
When asked what his perfect Salers cow would look like, Ray grabbed his keys and said, “I’ll have to show you.” Ray commented on how the breed has changed over the years. “It’s like a pendulum. Some traits get trendy and people can get too caught up in show ring results, which don’t necessarily reflect the commercial sector wants and views. We want to stay in the middle and breed for well balanced, functional cattle.” The Depalmes start at the ground and want their stock to have good feet with depth of heel. Cows need to express feminine character, have ample milk from a balanced, well attached udder with short teats, and be able to forage while weaning 50% of their body weight and look good doing it.” The Depalmes’ enthusiasm for networking and traveling to promote and learn more about Salers cattle has resulted in contacts and friendships in many countries abroad; i.e. France, U.K., Scotland, Ireland, Australia, U.S.A., New Zealand, and the list goes on. Ray has been to France several times, and was proud to be present at the first public exposition of Polled Salers Cattle in Paris, in February 2013. Ray finds it very rewarding to see Sky West genetics working in other people’s herds first hand. Ray concludes, “Salers people are very passionate about the breed. We need to keep pressing on; there is definitely more room for good Salers breeders!”
Perfomance Breeder of the Year ~ Harbrad Salers
Although he has tried several types of cattle and can appreciate other breeds, Brad Dunn finds Salers cattle to be the perfect fit for his farm’s needs. Brad originally started out with his father in the dairy business in 1976, but sold out in 1983 and struck out on his own with beef cattle on his south central Saskatchewan ranch near Ogema. “I picked Salers cattle because they’re all around good cattle, as far as I’m concerned. I liked their hair color and their calves when they are born. They’re full of vigor and just jump up and get going. It’s quite hilly down here, but they worked for me, and I stuck with them.” Originally, Brad had Charolais-based cows, and used Limousin bulls on them. Later, he switched over to using Salers on Charolais cows, and has been working on increasing his Purebred Salers cowherd since. In the beginning, Brad started out with 25-30 commercial cows. The current 120-head herd is all purebred Salers. Brad bought his first Salers bull from Jim Smith at Carstairs in 1994-95, and adds jokingly, “ So I guess you could say I have had Salers bulls for quite awhile.” The herd is based off of four original purebred cows and heifers. One cow was from Miller-McCoy at Didsbury, Alberta, and the heifers were purchased from Gordie Miller, Jim Smith, and Don Grant in the early 2000’s. Brad also showed at Agribition and Farmfair, and would still continue if there were more people showing, and was less costly and time-consuming. He uses the Western Producer, local papers, and the Salers magazine to spread word about his operations, along with word of mouth. Calves are weaned in October and then he backgrounds them. Brad then sells about 50-60 calves around the first or second week of December at Heartland in Moose Jaw. The rest are bulls or heifers that are kept back for resale for breeding purposes. Brad sells roughly 9-10 bulls per
year along with 25 replacement heifers, and culls 10-12 cows a year. He uses only natural service bulls for breeding purposes, as he finds AI takes a lot of time and it gets too mucky in the spring, especially as he farms by himself and doesn’t have the manpower to synchronize the whole bunch. Cull cattle are taken to local stockyards- Assiniboia or Weyborn Livestock Auction, which are all part of the Nilsson Brothers in Alberta. His current operation includes roughly 1,200 acres of grassland, 400 of which is put up for hay. He buys pellets and grain from WIT for his calves. Besides cattle, Brad also has Belgian and Percheron horses that he brings to various horse pulls and other competitions. For many years, he has also used the team to roll out the odd slough bale in the fields in the wintertime. When a friend was unable to help him this year, he decided to up the horsepower and use a bobcat. Adding to the list of traits he admires in Salers, Brad adds, “They’re easy to breed back, and have a big pelvis. You can breed a heifer to a big bull with no problem. They have lots of hair that is ideal for this climate, and they’re easy calvers. I don’t have any problems with them, they’re very docile. Lots of strangers will come out to the place and they just can’t believe how quiet the cows are when they walk around the pasture with them.” Brad has seen the Salers breed progress from a big, talllegged animal at one time, down to a smaller sized carcass. He prefers them now with a little smaller frame, compared to the first couple of Salers that were big-framed cattle, with a lot of leg under them. It was a rewarding experience for Brad to have won the Performance Award from the Salers Association of Canada this year, saying, “It was a great experience, especially considering the length of time I’ve been in the business, especially the purebred business.”
When asked why he continues to farm, Brad says, “I love everything about raising cattle. With livestock, you’re outside working with your hands a lot. I totally enjoy cattle. Except in the winter…they’re a lot more fun in summer.” When asked about any potential challenges, he begrudgingly laughs, and says, “the weather, or the markets- it’s always a game of when to sell and when not to sell. I don’t really have control over that though.” Advice he gives to farmers considering a career in the cattle business is to “Start out small, and learn from all your mistakes; it’ll eventually reward you. Lots of people start out real big. Don’t be afraid of spending a little money and start out with a few good head. You don’t have to have 100 or 200 head to start with. Do it right the first time.” He also challenges young people considering a future in both the Salers business and the cattle industry to step up to the plate to take over. “All sorts of sales are slowly becoming dispersal sales. Young guys figure they should be making a million overnight with them. Nobody wants to put in the work in order to reap the rewards. I wish they would realize they have a golden opportunity right in front of them to relieve people of their herds, if they’re willing to put the work in.” When asked about retirement plans, Brad says, “When I’m done, there’s nobody to take over my operation. I have lots of friends in the same predicament. I’m not ready to quit though, I’ll keep going. I’ve been a farmer since I was 16, and I hope to be still farming in 20 years. I’ll take cattle to the nursing home if I have to.” By Kate Bollum

The late Ron Liesemer – 1st President of the Salers Association of Canada loved Salers cattle. In 1973, along with his brother-in-law John Moore, Ron made a big trip to Quebec to see the bull Vaillant 1 from France, the first Salers animal to be imported into Canada. When the Salers Association of Canada was formed, Ron proudly became the first president of the association. His beloved wife Donna became the leader of the newly formed women’s group called Salettes and daughter Ronda was the first queen of the SAC. Ron was blessed with all the years he and his family were involved with the Salers breed. Cattle and rural living were important to Ron right up until his passing on July 10th, 2013 at the age of 85. His queen Donna had passed away in November 2010. He still had a Salers pin on his coat and a Salers hat in his closet. Ron was a great gentleman, successful cattleman and realtor, but he best loved to drive in the family pastures to look at cattle, Salers in particular.
Stanley G. Smith of Carstairs, AB passed away January 2nd at the age of 90 years. He was a long time Salers breeder under the name of Caledon Farms. Stan was one of the first cattlemen to use Salers genetics on his commercial cows. He loved the calves so much, he began breeding them up to purebred status. Stan loved being involved in the Salers breed and enjoyed attending sales, social events and the many Salers breeders who visited Caledon Farms. He was very proud to be in the Salers industry with his sons. Stan liked nothing better than to walk out among his cattle and see the future of the new calves on the ground. Stan’s pride and joy was his herd sire TV Big Deal, and in Stan’s retirement years Big Deal’s framed picture was always in sight! Stan quietly went about his life but has left a great legacy behind with 16 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He will be missed!
In December 2013, the SAC registrar for the past two years, Lois Chivilo, took on a full time postion with the Canadian Charolais Association. We would like to thank Lois for all her work on behalf of Salers Breeders and best wishes in her new position. Ray Depalme wishing Lois Chivilo a fond farewell
