Maxed Out in Madison!
t sure felt good to be back! World Dairy Expo week is always special and circled in red on the calendar, but the 2021 edition was especially so after its absence in 2020. The delight of turning onto John Nolen Drive was palpable, and then seeing the rows and rows of tremendous show cattle brought it all home how much it had been missed. Kudos to the World Dairy Expo staff for bringing it to fruition in the midst of a crazy year and changing health regulations that made planning tenuous.
commented how they’re always looking for ways to make things better, to make the cows better, but no matter what, you always fall short somehow in helping that cow get to her full genetic potential. Maybe it’s a bad load of feed or sore feet, maybe it’s an extra month of extreme heat, maybe there’s something a bit off with the milking system that you haven’t solved yet, but for most of us, the day-today issues on the farm are always tapping the brake pedal on getting the very most out of our cows.
Notable this year in the show results was the number of good animals owned by large dairy producers in the show strings. Many of those owners had very successful days in their breed shows, and we’re delighted to see the resurgence of interest in deep-pedigreed, high-type cattle. So many times over the years we’ve heard how the show ring isn’t relevant or how the commercial guy doesn’t care about type. Well, we know most profitable producers definitely care about type, and now we’re seeing how the show ring is relevant to those large dairymen and dairywomen interested in genetics.
Justin enjoys - even relishes - going to the big shows because he says he gets a chance to see cows ‘maxed out’. Not in a bad way, but in the sense that they are getting the very best care, attention to every detail, every decision and action is to make that cow happier, healthier, and more productive - and to help her look her best. The cows we were able to watch parading at Madison are coming as close as possible to ‘full potential’!
I’d always wondered how to answer that comment - that show ring isn’t relevant to ‘real world’ dairy producers. I’d never been able to put my finger on why it was important to the whole industry. I knew it was, but could never articulate it. During a lengthy visit with Justin Stewart of Arizona Dairy (see a feature article about them in this issue), he said something that flipped on a very big light bulb for me as he summed up why he loves going to the shows.
As breeders and enthusiasts, that really cuts to the heart of it, and I’m so glad that Justin was able to shape in words how I’ve always felt walking up and down the aisles at Expo - or from barn to barn years ago. It’s so satisfying to see all those cows ‘killing it’ as they eat all they can, rest on the most comfortable beds, and show their stuff in the ring. Whether they’re a champion or an also ran, if you love dairy cows, you love to see it!

because you could just see all the things you could be doing better after you’d just spent a week away looking after cattle with the best caretakers in the world. (Plus, northern Wisconsin always had a brutal sense of humor, and the day you returned from Madison was the day the weather turned foul for the fall.) World Dairy Expo is remarkable for so many reasons, and one of my favorites is the gathering of brain power and innovative thinkers in our industry. If you made it there, I hope you had a chance to learn something new from a conversation, or observe a different, maybe better, way to handle something with your own cows. If you didn’t get to Madison this year - we can’t wait to see you in 2022! As always, hats off to our Cowsmopolitan team! It’s a group that handles the long days and full schedule with aplomb and good humor. Julie & I are privileged to work elbow to elbow with the best all week long and it makes show coverage and trade show efforts a joy! On to the next big thing - the calendar keeps on flipping! We’re sorting through the All-American contest entries and are so excited to be revealing the lucky AllAmerican Holstein and Jersey nominees in Nashville on December 5th as part of the Music City Sale festivities! It kind of feels like we all need a celebration and a party after the last two years, so we hope you’ll consider joining us in person, or if that’s not possible, please tune in to the event on the Cowsmo Facebook page we’ll do it live! From the Big Dairy to the Big Ring! T
he 2021 World Dairy Expo crowd discovered a new sweetheart when Scenic-Edge Jordan-Red, a junior 3-year-old Red & White cow, was crowned Supreme Champion of the WDE Junior Shows. From class winner to Intermediate Champion of the Open Show to Grand Champion of the International Red & White Junior Show to Supreme Champion, Jordan took her owners Jacey & Hadley Ross, along with their whole family and crew from Arizona Dairy, on a memorable ride in Madison!
addition to Jordan’s individual success, Arizona Dairy also captured the Premier Exhibitor banner. “We love the family camaraderie that comes along with going to a show, and we also like the competitive nature of showing – every breeder bringing their best to the ring – that’s really fun!” comments Justin Stewart of Arizona Dairy. “We’re still on cloud nine from Madison! Even with all of the plates spinning here at home, and the crap you have on a daily basis on the farm, I’ll be on cloud nine for a year!”
Jordan has had a notable show career to date including several Junior Champion titles when she was a summer yearling, and she has been a fast track to the top of the show world for this family that operates a large and extensive dairy operation in Mesa, Arizona. In
There are plenty of plates to spin at Arizona Dairy, where they milk 6,000 cows and have 12,000 total animals on site including young stock. The operation started in 1973 when Kenny & Marvin Morrison partnered with Jim Tappan to begin milking 2,500 cows
on land in Mesa. By the early ‘80s, the herd had doubled in size to 5,000 and eventually, the Kenny Morrison family ended up with the entire dairy. The operation is now owned by Justin and Dawnie Stewart (daughter of Kenny). Day-to-day operations are run by Justin with help from Dustin Ross and Denton Ross (Dawnie’s sons). Dustin manages the equipment and Denton oversees the herd genetics and reproduction on the dry lot dairy. The family also farms 2700 acres west of Phoenix, which mainly grows dry alfalfa forage for the herd. A southwest dairy of this size might not be the first place you think of when it comes to banner winners, but the show ring rewards are just a few of the benefits from a decision made several years ago committing to improving the genetics of the entire herd. They built an IVF facility on the dairy and decided to use donors from the top 5-10% of their herd to make embryos to transfer into the rest of their herd. “It was about a two- or three-year long dialogue with our veterinarian and our staff, who were not in favor of it,” recalls Justin. “I really felt we needed to do it. We were and are always trying to get better everywhere on the dairy – better nutrition, equipment, facilities, care. All the cows are in the same environment and receive the same care, why do some cows excel and stand out? What makes those cows come to the top? What’s different about these cows? Well, of course, it’s their genetics. It takes the

We were and are always trying to get better everywhere on the dairy – better nutrition, equipment, facilities, care. All the cows are in the same environment and receive the same care, why do some cows excel and stand out? What makes those cows come to the top? What’s different about these cows? Well, of course, it’s their genetics. It takes the same amount of time and money to make a bad cow as it does a good one, so why don’t we make a better cow instead of a lot of just average cows?” JUSTIN STEWART
same amount of time and money to make a bad cow as it does a good one, so why don’t we make a better cow instead of a lot of just average cows?” He admits that there was a sizeable initial investment, but that it was it was the best way to ‘step on the gas pedal and go’ as far as improving the herd as quickly as possible. “The national Holstein herd is getting better every day. As a large western herd, we had some catching up to do compared to herds in the east and Midwest,” notes Justin. “But we decided to make two or three more calves from cows from the top of our herd instead of settling for just her one calf – that’s how you make a better herd. And it might be the
cheapest way when you consider the improvement in reproductive numbers in our hot weather months. We might have single digit conception rates using semen when it’s hot, but we can double that number, if not better, implanting IVF embryos, so we make big gains during that time of year. And, frankly, it’s rewarding to boot if you enjoy cows and genetics. Our oldest ‘IVF babies’ are now in their 3rd lactation, and are noticeably better than their herdmates, both phenotypically and in actual production.” The herd is averaging 84# a day across 6,000 cows with a 3.5% butterfat and 3.4% protein. As members of the United Dairymen of Arizona co-op, their milk
is marketed across all four class uses. A new milk beverage (Fairlife) production plant is now online in the Phoenix area producing the whole portfolio of Fairlife products. “We’re always looking to increase our percentage of sales to that Class I (fluid milk), so we breed for a high-protein, moderate fat product. For us, Holsteins crush it for that market – no question, and if you’re looking at energy-corrected milk at all, Holsteins kick the other breeds to the curb,” enthuses Justin. They’ve also started classifying regularly throughout the herd and currently 2,534 scored cows average 81 points, highlighted by 33 Excellent and 571 Very Good cows.

I get to the dairy once a month and when we walk through the herd, it’s night and day how much better the 1st and 2nd lactation cows are compared to the older herdmates. We all try to keep costs down on our dairies, but they made the investment in genetics and now they are seeing the better return financially to their bottom line.” Lorita Honeymoon-ET VG-86 is the dam of the #1 Type sire, Peak Hammer, and plays a prominent role in the Arizona Dairy Company IVF program. Graisson Schmidt, a genetic and marketing consultant for Arizona Dairy, expects those numbers to keep improving. “Justin and Denton have one major goal and that’s to breed a better cow. In addition to building the IVF lab, the operation also invested in cattle and embryos from other breeders, including the Rasberry partnership

from Washington and from Terra Linda Dairy in California. They purchased Lorita Honeymoon VG-86, dam of the #1 Type sire, Peak Hammer +4.46 PTAT, about a year and a half ago as well as other individuals to boost them into the high genomic market. Graisson notes that they will still purchase some select individuals, but now don’t need to buy to build the foundation anymore. They also have their own genetics to tap – they recently had their first heifer, Arizona Conway 37509-ET, genomic test over +3000 GTPI. She’s a Sandy-Valley Conway daughter whose maternal line runs generations-deep right at Arizona Dairy. “I think they’ll continue to add females that are really intriguing; individuals to actively market from – whether
that’s high genomic or show ring type,” continues Graisson. Recent purchases include an Altitude summer junior 2-year-old, Apple-Pts Ainsa-Red-ET VG88 that won her class for them at Expo; Alleyoop and Select daughters from S-S-I Doc Have Not 8784-ET EX-92 that both have strong genomic numbers for both type and production. They’re starting to market more earnestly and have begun consigning to sales in addition to using print ads in industry publications as well as maintaining an active presence on social media. Justin has an extensive Instagram following (almost 16,000 people) where he has used the platform not only to highlight elite cattle, but also to positively depict the day-today life on the dairy in the interest of educating consumers. Their Facebook account has over 2,000 followers and the posts there also consist of a mix of content for both dairy cattle enthusiasts and for the public at large. Graisson maintains that their presence at the shows will continue to be a big part of their outreach for selling cattle and genetics. “Being at the shows keeps your name in front of people. The more people see your name and logo, the more it starts to stick and people think of you as a source for quality genetics,” he explains. The national show caliber cattle are housed at Maple-Leigh Futures in Delavan, WI, where Tanner & Maddie Schmaling and crew can give them the day-to-day care that top show cattle require. Red, whose accomplishments we’ve already highlighted, the Arizona Dairy group had plenty of other notable achievements on their way to winning the Premier Exhibitor banner of the International Red & White Show: - Arb-Flo-Spr Honeybun-Red-ET EX-92, 3rd senior 3-year-old and 1st junior - St Jacob Destry Lava-Red-ET EX-93, 4th 4-year-old - Ms Fannys Flaunt It-Red-ET EX-91, 6th senior 2-year-old - Ms Unstopabull Beauty-In-Red VG-88, 6th junior 2-year-old - Kress-Hill Smoke-Red-ET, 3rd summer yearling and 1st junior - Arizona War Bandanna-Red-ET, 5th winter yearling and 2nd junior Honeybun had been the Grand Champion of the Midwest Spring Red & White Show earlier in the year and Destry Lava was the Reserve Senior Champion of the Wisconsin Championship Red & White Show in August, while Jordan was Reserve Grand Champion of that show. While Red & Whites certainly make up the majority of the Arizona showstring, one special Black & White made her debut on the colored shavings as well. R-John Crushin On Courtney EX-92, placed 4th in the junior 3-year-old class. Earlier in the summer, Courtney was named Junior All-Wisconsin and captured Intermediate and Reserve Grand Champion honors of the Junior Championship Show. Their location geographically means plenty of miles to cover if they want to exhibit at the best shows and they have not shied away from traveling to the California State Show, the Western

Spring National Show in Richmond, Utah, and trips to the Midwest to see the Wisconsin-based cattle strut their stuff. They exhibit plenty of black & white Holsteins as well, it just seems to be that the red & whites have excelled so far. “As a family, we like having the red & whites, and here on the dairy, having some red ones makes them easier to spot in the dry lots,” laughs Justin. The time and expense of showing at an elite level can be off putting, but Justin thinks the value is priceless when it comes to building relationship in the business. “I want to meet that friend for life! I’ve met some wonderful people through the show ring – I can now call people from across the country to get their thoughts and insights on things. I want to rely on those relationships.” And
he makes the connection of why a large herd dairy producer like himself finds shows intriguing and educational. “When I walk through the barns at a show, I truly love to see a cow maxed out – meaning she is expressing her genetics to her maximum potential. These show cows get the most attention and the best care – better than we can do it day-to-day on a dairy. They have every chance to reach their potential, and I just love that!” he exclaims. “As a large herd producer, we keep striving for efficiency through breeding, IVF and genetics in order to feed more and more people with fewer cows and fewer farms in this country. WORLD DAIRY EXPO 2021 After a year away, the return to Madison in the early fall of the year was a welcome trip for exhibitors and visitors from across the world to make. Over 2300 head of cattle and 1500 exhibitors made the 2021 World Dairy Expo one to remember forever. Many of the animals and breeders that earned purple banners during the week have been in the limelight before, either in Madison or at shows earlier this year. Here is a brief rundown! Rising to the top of the 2021 World Dairy Expo was crowd favorite, Erbacres Snapple Shakira-ET, who claimed the Supreme Champion title on Saturday. Shakira, scored EX-97 just weeks before making the trip to Madison. No stranger to the ring, Shakira first made headlines as a Junior 2-year-old placing 5th at Expo, and winning the class at the Royal, eventually earning herself Reserve All-American and All-Canadian titles. She returned the following year, capturing the Intermediate Champion banner and AllAmerican title. She took the 2019 show season off and triumphantly returned to one of the only Canadian Holstein fall shows last year, earning Grand Champion honors. Shakira was a crowd favorite, eventually winning the Aged Cow class and title as Grand Champion of the International Holstein Show for Judge Mike Berry. Shakira is owned by Ferme Jacobs, Ty-D Holsteins, Kilian Theraulaz, Ferme Antelimarck and C & F Jacobs of Cap-Sante, QC. Ferme Jacobs capped off their week with being named Overall Premier Breeder. Oakfield Solom Footloose-ET (EX-94), topped the Duckett Summer Celebration Sale earlier in 2021, and glided her way to a Reserve Grand Champion handshake after winning the 4-year-old class. Sharyn Abbott, WI. Footloose was the 2020 AllAmerican Junior 3-Year-Old and Nominated in 2019 for previous owners and breeders, Oakfield Corners Dairy, NY. The Footloose win helped secure Duckett Holstein’s Overall Premier Exhibitor Banner yet again, having also won it in 2018 & 2019. Junior Champion was the winning Fall Calf, Ms Rebas Raven Beauty-ET, who was purchased by Glamourview-Iager & Walton, MD, earlier in the week from Tessa & Stella Schmocker, WI. Beauty was the Champion Calf and Reserve Grand Champion Heifer at the 2021 WI State Fair Junior Show and also named Best Bred & Owned Overall of the Heifer Show. Grand Champion of the International Junior Holstein Show went to Tusc-Vu Avalanche Cali, the winning 4-Year-Old exhibited by Isaac Folts, NY. Cali was also named Grand Champion at the Western NY Regional Holstein Show earlier this year and was HM Junior All-American Senior 3-Year-Old in 2020. Intermediate Champion and Best Bred & Owned of the Show was Hobby-Hill Denver Elizabeth, the winning Junior 2-YearOld owned by Gracin & Chesney Speich, WI. Judge Brandon Ferry, WI, selected his winning Summer Yearling, Jeffrey-Way Drman Tavor, as Junior Champion for Emma, Kate & Ava Hendrickson, WI. Making history during the International Jersey Show was Vierra Dairy Farm of Hilmar, CA. In the first time since the introduction of Intermediate Champion in 1994, one exhibitor claimed all three champions - Junior, Intermediate & Senior. Prior to this, three farms
exhibited the Junior and Senior Champions in the same year: Gil-Bar Jersey Farm, WI, in 1975; Bridon Farm, ON, in 1982; and Phillip Webster, QC, in 1993. Judge Chad Ryan found his Senior and Grand Champion in winning Aged Cow, Bri-Lin Valson Spritz. She is no stranger in the champion ring at Expo, claiming Grand Champion honors in both 2019 and 2021. Spritz was also Reserve Grand Champion at the Royal in 2019. Playing second fiddle to Spritz was Summer Breeze Tequila Gayle, the winning Senior 3-Year-Old and Intermediate Champion. This duo also claimed top honors at The Jersey Event earlier this summer. Rounding out the Vierra hat-trick was SVHeaths Kid Rock Jaden, the winning summer yearling, named Junior Champion. Jaden was also Junior Champion at The Jersey Event and was the Reserve Supreme Junior Champion on Saturday! Vierra Dairy also took home the Premier Exhibitor banner while Ratliff Jerseys, KS, were named Premier Breeder. Four-Hills Farm, VT, was Premier Breeder in the Heifer Show and Glamourview-Iager & Walton, MD, was Premier Exhibitor. In the International Junior Jersey Show, Homeridge T Annette was selected as Intermediate and Grand Champion and took home Reserve Supreme Champion honors for Kylie & Dawson Nickels, Travis Freson, Mandy Sell and Scott Stanford, WI. Annette earned Reserve Grand Champion honors at the Wisconsin Summer Championship Junior Show in August as well. The International Red & White Show judged by Pierre Boulet and Richard Landry, both of Quebec, produced three of the Supreme Champions on Saturday - Supreme Cow
of the Junior Show and Supreme Heifer of both the Open and Junior Shows. ScenicEdge Jordan-Red, owned by Hadley & Jacey, Ross, AZ, was the winning Junior 3-Year-Old, Intermediate & Grand Champion of the Junior Show and eventual Supreme Champion of the Junior Shows. She also claimed Intermediate and HM Grand Champion titles in the Open Show. Jordan also took home Intermediate & Grand Champion honors of the WI Summer Red & White Junior Show in August. Arizona Dairy also earned their first Overall Premier Exhibitor banner. Grand Champion honors went to Anita Absolute Joline-Red, the winning Aged Cow owned by Milk Source and Laurie Fisher, WI. Joline was also Grand Champion at the Wisconsin Summer Championship Red & White Show in 2021. Reserve Grand Champion went to Westcoast Defiant Addison-Red, who was second place in the Aged Cow class. She was also named Best Bred & Owned of the show for Westcoast, Quebequa and Colganados of Chilliwack, BC. Supreme Champion Heifer of both the Open and Junior shows was Dorloy-K GuinnessRed-ET, the winning Winter calf for Kenlee Philips, TX. She had previously been named Reserve Junior Champion of the Ohio State Fair Red & White Show. Apple Partners LLC of Lanark, IL, claimed the Premier Breeder banner in the Heifer Show and Overall. Premier Exhibitor of the Heifer Show went to Hilrose Holsteins, WI. The final two Supreme Champion awards came from the International Brown Swiss Show, judged by Lynn Harbaugh, WI. Cutting Edge Thunder Fay was the winning Aged Cow, Grand Champion and eventual Reserve Supreme Champion for Ken Main and Kenny Joe Manion, NY. In 2020, Faye was Grand Champion at the Southwest National Show and named All American 5-Year-Old. In 2019, she was a bridesmaid to Supreme Champion Delilah, being the 2nd high seller at the Elite Dispersal and then earning Reserve Grand Champion honors at Expo. Intermediate and Reserve Grand Champion was Senior 3-YearOld, Cutting Edge F Faroh-ETV, also owned by Main & Manion. Interesting enough, Faroh is sired by Foremost, a full brother to Faye! Elite Dairy II (Main & Manion) was also named Premier Breeder Overall.
Reserve Senior Champion was 2nd Aged Cow, Iroquois Acres Jong Cali, owned by Matthew Pacheco, CA. Cali was All American in 2019 after winning the 4-Year-Old class in Madison. Siegrets Damian Pinapple was 2nd in the Senior 3-Year-Old class and Reserve Intermediate Champion for Leslie & Linda Bruchey, MD. Pinapple was named Grand Champion at the Maryland State Fair earlier this year. Random Luck B Tea, a 3X Reserve All American, was the winning Component Merit Cow and named Grand Champion of the Junior Show for Matthew and Allison Thompson, WI. Abby Foss leased Pit-Crew Formula Tawny, the winning Winter Yearling, from Pit-Crew Genetics of Minnesota to claim the Junior Champion title in both the Open and Junior Shows and Reserve Supreme Champion honors of the Junior Show. Pit-Crew Genetics also took home the Premier Breeder of the Heifer Show banner, along with both Premier Exhibitor banners - Overall & Heifer Show! Earning top honors in the International Ayrshire Show for Judge Michael Creek, MD, was Marilie Gentleman Karmina, the winning Aged Cow owned by Budjon Farms and Peter & Lyn Vail, WI. Karmina was All-American in 2019 after earning Reserve honors at Expo and she was HM All-American last year. Following Karmina was Palmyra Predator B Ruthless-ET, the Junior 3-Year-old who took home both Reserve Grand and Intermediate Champion honors. Ruthless, the All-American Junior 2-Year-Old from 2020, is owned by Kurt Wolf and John Cannon, IA. Toppglen Wishful Thinking-ET placed 1st in the Lifetime Component Merit Cow class before winning Reserve Senior Champion and eventually Grand Champion of the Junior Show for Tanner, Brennan, Marissa and Logan Topp of West Salem, Ohio. A perennial show winner, Wishful Thinking was Supreme Champion of the Ohio Spring Dairy Expo Junior Show in March and Unanimous AllAmerican in 2020. For the second year in a row, Old-N-Lazy, the partnership of Kurt Wolf and Michael Maier, IA, was named Premier Breeder overall and in the heifer show. Peter Vail, FL, was Premier Exhibitor in both divisions as well.
Dean Dohle, MO, found his Grand Champion of both the Open & Junior Shows in Maple Fudge of 12 Oaks, the winning Lifetime Merit Cow owned by Colton & Ashley Brandel, WI. Fudge was also named Grand Champion in 2018. Fudge stood in the winners circle with the winning Aged Cow, Corstar Presto Lulu-ET who was respectively named Reserve Grand & Senior Champion for Cory and Kristen Salzl of Minnesota. In early September, Lulu was also named Supreme Champion of the Minnesota State Fair! Gin-Val Logic Lauretta-EXP received Intermediate Champion honors for Johnathon Clark of Cornish, New Hampshire and was named Intermediate and Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show. Lauretta was also Grand Champion of the Eastern States Big E Milking Shorthorn Show just a week prior to Expo. Lazy M Farm received another Overall Premier Breeder banner as well as the Heifer Show Premier Exhibitor banner. Peter Vail was named Overall Premier Exhibitor while Heavenly Show Cattle, WI, brought home the Premier Breeder banner of the Heifer Show. And rounding out the shows was back-toback winner, Valley Gem Atlas Malt, Grand Champion of the International Guernsey Show. Malt, the winning Aged Cow, is owned by Valley Gem Farms of Wisconsin. She was also the Best Bred & Owned of the Show. Springhill Kojack Uno was the winning 5-YearOld and earned Reserve Grand Champion honors under Judge Molly Sloan, WI. She is owned by Ty & Ean Mader and Faith Ling, MO, and was also Grand Champion of the Ozark Empire Fair this summer. Claiming Intermediate Champion was the winning Junior 3-Year-Old, Dix-Lee Method Journey, shown by Whitney Lee Yerina of Missouri. Journey was also the Intermediate and Grand Champion of the Junior Show! Additionally, Journey was Supreme Champion at the 2021 Missouri State Fair. AWARD WINNER RECOGNITION 2021 A.C. “Whitie” Thomson Memorial Award
2021 Merle Howard Award
The A.C. “Whitie” Thomson Memorial Award was presented to Ysabel Jacobs of Ferme Jacobs, Cap-Santé, Québec, Canada, during World Dairy Expo 2021. Jacobs received this recognition for mirroring the exemplary leadership and sportsmanship that Whitie Thomson was known for in the showring.
Kylie Nickels was named the 17th Merle Howard Award winner at the 54th World Dairy Expo on Saturday, October 2. A hard-working, dedicated, and passionate showman, this year’s Merle Howard Award honoree started her showing career by exhibiting grade cattle from a nearby neighbor.
Jacobs has a degree in marketing and farms with her family including parents, siblings, and children. Ferme Jacobs consists of 2,000 acres and over 1,200 head of cattle. The farm and the family behind it have successfully marketed cattle and embryos around the world and recently hosted a sale that averaged nearly $13,000 with three females selling for over $200,000 each. With her degree, Jacobs manages the marketing efforts of cattle and embryos on the farming operation. The Jacobs family began exhibiting dairy cattle at the local level in 1980. In 2008, they brought their first full string to World Dairy Expo and achieve impressive results with a class winner and three others that stood in the top four. Ferme Jacobs has exhibited at World Dairy Expo for 13 shows and has build a reputation in the Showring that is recognized by many. Jacobs and her family have been awarded two Premier Exhibitor banners and nine Premier Breeder banners, including the Premier Breeder banner for the 2021 International Holstein Show. They have exhibited numerous champions including three Grand Champions who each went on to claim titles under the spotlight at Expo – Bonaccueil Maya Goldwyn, the 2013 Supreme Champion; Jacobs Lauthority Loana, 2018 Reserve Supreme Champion; and Erbacres Snapple Shakira-ET, Expo’s current Supreme Champion. Jacobs possesses an incredible passion for the dairy industry and has garnered the respect of fellow breeders and exhibitors around the globe. She is known for being a leader, a visionary and is humble in victory and gracious in defeat.
From that humble beginning, Nickels began pursuing her dreams of building a dairy herd when she purchased her first registered Holstein . . . a spring calf. Following a mating to the Holstein sire named Atwood, her very first bred and owned calf was born a few years later. That first bred and owned animal eventually earned first-place honors at her district Holstein show and later a top ten finish at the Wisconsin State Holstein show. Nickels, now a University of WisconsinMadison student, most recently developed the winning Grand Champion of the 2021 International Junior Jersey Show at World Dairy Expo. There’s a reason for all the success this junior has earned . . . Nickels is one of the hardest working youths in the barns. Whether it’s helping catch manure, feeding hay, or being the one stuck clipping legs, no job is too big or too small for this young lady. To further develop her skills, Nickels began working for some of the very best breeder-exhibitors in the area, including Cresentmead, Crestbrooke, the Sell Family, the Great Northern, and Budjon Farms. Those experiences also allowed her to hone her skills working at shows across the country. The more this Dodge County junior learned about dairy cattle, the more she wanted to give back to fellow juniors. With an unquenchable desire to learn, Nickels teaches others by mentoring youth via fitting and showing clinics held at their family farm. In recent years, she has also served as herdsperson for her county at the Wisconsin State Fair and prepped nearly all the county’s cattle for the show.
It's at that Wisconsin State Fair that not once, but twice, she was named Supreme Champion Showman of the entire show in 2019 and 2021. A well-rounded individual, just a few years earlier, Nickels was on the Dodge County team that represented Wisconsin at the National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest at World Dairy Expo. That team won the entire contest that year. Nickels’ eye for good cattle also made her an ideal person to serve as committee chair for selections at the 2021 University of Wisconsin-Madison Badger Dairy Club Online Sale. As a member of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Dairy Cattle Judging Team, Kylie earned second-place individual honors at the 27th Annual Vernon County Dairy Cattle Judging Contest in September 2021. 2021 Klussendorf Award Jeff Core of Salvisa, Kentucky was presented the 79th Klussendorf Award, the highest recognition given to a dairy cattle showman in the United States during the 54th World Dairy Expo. Core embodies every admirable quality of a great, late dairyman. The award is given in memory of Arthur B. Klussendorf, considered an outstanding showman of his time and a model for all those who have followed him. This year’s selection was made by members of the Klussendorf Memorial Association, formed in 1937, at its annual meeting held earlier this week in Madison, Wisconsin. Core received the silver trophy designed by Tiffany Jewelers of New York City on Friday, October 1. Born and raised on an Iowa Jersey farm, Core traveled to Kentucky four decades ago to see some of the best Jersey farms in the world. It was on that trip that he met his wife, and they went on to create the Keightley and Core Jersey Farm. Throughout the years, this dairyman and his wife have bred and exhibited multiple national champions, placed bulls in A.I. studs, and have bred production award winners. The farm has been a regular exhibitor at both World Dairy Expo and the All American Jersey Show. Not only has the 79th Klussendorf winner worked to build an excellent herd of Jersey cattle, Core has also judged both nationally and internationally including serving as the associate judge on the colored shavings for the 2019 International Brown Swiss Show; as associate judge of the 2004 All American Jersey Show; and as official judge at shows in both Canada and Mexico.

The Klussendorf Award was developed to recognize those who exemplify a person with great character, sportsmanship, ability, and endeavor to dairy cattle shows. There is no more dedicated individual to caring for and exhibiting Jersey cattle than Jeff Core. In addition to these great attributes, Core is a loyal friend to many in the industry and he is always willing to lend advice and help to anyone who takes an interest in the industry. Jeff Core joined his wife, Alta Mae, as the first husband-wife duo to receive the Klussendorf Award. Alta Mae Core won the same honor in 1999. Klussendorf-MacKenzie Award Jeff Stookey of Milford, Ind., was presented the 30th Klussendorf-MacKenzie Award during World Dairy Expo® 2021, in memory of Duncan MacKenzie, the 1961 Klussendorf winner. While this year’s KlussendorfMacKenzie award winner has an impressive dairy résumé, it is most important to note that Stookey exemplifies the standards that made Duncan MacKenzie the forbearer of this award. This seventh-generation dairyman’s passion for the dairy industry and desire to help others began at a very young age, working side-by-side with his father, John, on the family’s dairy. While working on the farm, Stookey also spent time fitting cattle from 1977 to 1993. With a true eye for “the good ones,” he bought animals while working on the road and developed them into show winners at home, furthering the farm’s genetic base. After his father suffered a heart attack in the early 1990s, Stookey returned to work full-time on the family farm and continued developing his Registered Holstein and Jersey herd. During his career, this year’s MacKenzie award winner has exhibited 47 All Indiana and 24 Reserve All Indiana winners. On the national stage, he exhibited the Junior Champion of the International Holstein Show at the 1999 World Dairy Expo and the Junior Champion at the 2008 All American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This Indiana dairyman has sold numerous animals to Brazil, Canada, Japan, and Mexico, as well as many animals to fellow U.S. breeders.

As Stookey made his way to the colored shavings on Friday, October 1 at World Dairy Expo to receive his award, he most certainly would have wanted to recognize that it takes a team to run a dairy. With that in mind, Jeff would be quick to thank his wife, Marla, and their children and their spouses, Maranda and Camron, and Mallarie and Micah, for their work on the dairy.
Earning six Grand Champion titles at World Dairy Expo in addition to the 2018 and 2019 Supreme Champion banners with Cutting Edge T Delilah 2E-95, Main and Vail are no strangers to Expo’s Showring. They have been named Premier Exhibitor of the International Brown Swiss Show for 13 consecutive years and Premier Breeder annually since 2016. Main and Vail have had an All-American winner every year since 2003, with as many as 17 nominations at one time. These dairymen are also regular exhibitors at state, regional, national and additional international shows.
2021 McKown Master Breeders On behalf of the Klussendorf Association, World Dairy Expo® is pleased to share that Ken Main and Peter Vail, along with their Cutting Edge prefix, have been selected as the twelfth recipients of the Robert “Whitey” McKown Master Breeder Award. This award honors exemplary breeders and herds that have been successful at showing and judging dairy cattle. The winners embody all of the qualities associated with the Klussendorf Award, including character, ability, endeavor, and sportsmanship. Main and Vail have exemplified what it means to be Brown Swiss breeders. Setting goals and accomplishing them with great accolade, Main and Vail have provided solid genetics for profitable production through their dedicated breeding program and top maternal lines to herds throughout the Brown Swiss breed.
Production goes hand-in-hand with type when the name Cutting Edge comes to mind. At the time of their dispersal sale, the herd’s production average was 21,650 pounds of milk with a 4.6% butterfat and 3.7% protein test. The Cutting Edge prefix is a renowned name in the dairy industry and will be for generations to come. Main and Vail’s collective passion and ambition for enhancing the registered dairy cattle industry is unmatched, and it is the reason they have earned the honor of being named the 2021 McKown Master Breeder Award winners.

ne of the joys of World Dairy Expo is sitting in the seats watching various champion parades of our fabulous dairy shows. O Whether it’s the animals competing for Junior Champion Milking Shorthorn, Intermediate Champion Red & White or Grand Champion Jersey, it’s always an impressive lineup and every year we get to appreciate the unbelievable caliber of cattle strolling in
front of the crowd. This year, while watching the Grand Champion Holstein parade, it was a real pleasure to realize that in years gone by, we’ve cheered for some of these cow’s foremothers as well! There seemed to be a fair number of cattle throughout the week that had some very familiar names in their pedigrees, so we did a little digging and sorted out those 2021 champions that have a ‘family tradition’ of Expo titles!
Perhaps the most obvious is Erbacres Snapple ShakiraET EX-97, the Grand Champion of the International Holstein Show. Her roots with former Expo Champions are well-known - her dam, Miss Apple Snapple-Red EX-96 was the Reserve Senior Champion & HM Grand Champion of the International R&W Show in 2017, and her legendary grandam, KHW Regiment Apple-Red-ET EX-96, was Grand Champion of that show in 2011 and Reserve Grand in 2011.
The cow moving into the Reserve Grand Champion position at the Holstein Show, Oakfield Solomon Footloose EX-94 also walked where her grandam held the spotlight more than a decade ago. Footloose is out of Duckett-SA Braxtn Frisco-ET, the EX-94 daughter of 2-time World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion, Harvue Roy Frosty EX-97.
As you might expect, we return to the direct influence of Apple when we peruse the International Red & White Show champions. The Reserve Grand Champion and Champion Bred & Owned cow of the show - Westcoast Defiant Addison EX-95-2E-CAN - is a daughter of KHW Regiment Apple 3-Red-ETN EX-94-CAN 4*, the Apple clone who was Grand Champion of the same show in 2013.
Sco-Lo Dice Hotstuff-Red-ET topped a competitive fall calf class in the Red & White Show on her way to a Reserve Junior Champion title. If the name Hotstuff sounds familiar, her granddam, Starmark Ad HotstuffRed-ET EX-94 was the Reserve Grand Champion of the show in 2012 as a 5-year-old.
In a further stretch pedigree-wise, the Intermediate Champion of the 2021 International Red & White Show, Scenic-Edge Jordan-Red EX-92, follows the Scenic-Edge path back four generations to a 2009 Expo Junior Champion in Scenic-Edge Jellybean EX94, when she won as a Fall Yearling.

Her Thunder son, Foremost, is a full brother to Faye and sired the Reserve Grand Champion of this year’s show, Cutting Edge F FarohETV VG-89.
The easiest pairing to guess based on their names alone might be the Intermediate & Reserve Grand Champion of the International Ayrshire Show, Palmyra Predator B Ruthless EX-91. She’s a direct daughter of Palmyra Berkeley P Ruth EX-94, the two-time, back-toback Grand Champion of the show in 2017 & 2018.
Another dam-daughter champion pair also represented in the Ayrshire Show came with the Reserve Senior Champion, Toppglen Wishful ThinkingET EX-94 who is out of Conebella Sarge’s Wendy EX-93, the Grand Champion of the Junior Show in 2011.
One more Grand Champion link showed up in the Ayrshire show as the Reserve Intermediate Champion, Miss Malibu Mimosa EX-91, through an EX-94 dam and EX-92 grandam, can count Valevue BBK Minerva EX96 3E, three-time Expo Grand Champion, as her third dam.
Corstar Presto Lulu-ET EX-92, won the aged cow class on her way to be named Reserve Grand Champion of the International Milking Shorthorn Show. She also needs to look back only a couple generations to see that her third dam, Nixs Lilly Pad EX-93, also stood for headshots as the Grand Champion of the show in 2008.
It wouldn’t be a high-end Jersey show without a champion from the Veronica family, and sure enough, we found one in the Reserve Intermediate Champion Pacific Edge Premier Diva-ET, the VG-89 senior 2-yearold. Out of an EX-93 Colton, then an EX-95 Primetime, next in line is the incomparable Huronia Centurion Veronica EX-97 5E, a three-time Expo Grand Champion, and Supreme Champion in 2006.
Veronica blood can also be found in the Reserve Junior Champion, Arethusa Gentry Chante-ET, the winning winter yearling. Out of the Furor daughter, Arethusa Veronicas Comet EX-95, Chante calls EX-97 Veronica her grandam.

A HOME RUN CAREER I
t’s a balancing act keeping this junior’s schedule in check between his passions for elite baseball and for elite show cattle. Johnathon “Johnny” Clark pulls it off with ease, even if it means picking and choosing between games and shows. It is no shock that he would “catch the bug” of showing as his grandparents are Greg and Marcia Clark of GMC Farm. “I would have to say one of my greatest role models is my grandparents,” Clark said. “They have had one of the best herds in the Milking Shorthorn breed for a long time now, proving it with All-American nominations year after year.” Johnny, his parents, and siblings own and operate Ginger Valley Farm in Cornish, New Hampshire. Clark had an early start in the show business, even before he could walk. At the age of four, he was able to make his solo debut showing in peewee showmanship at his county fair. Starting out with Milking Shorthorns and Brown Swiss, his family slowly gravitated towards Ayrshires and Milking Shorthorns. Currently, the farm has nineteen head and has had quite the year in the show ring! At the 2021 Northeast National Milking Shorthorn Show at the Eastern States Exposition the Clarks, both GMC Farm and Ginger Valley Farm, had Junior Champion, Reserve Junior Champion, Intermediate
Champion, Reserve and Honorable Mention Intermediate Champion, Senior and Honorable Mention Senior Champions, and ultimately Grand, Reserve Grand, and Honorable Mention Grand Champion. How many people can say that about their family’s show string? That was just the beginning for Clark, being successful and eager and wanting more. He and his dad, Greg Clark Jr., took the trek and had the mindset of “all roads lead to Madison!” The 2021 World Dairy Expo was something special for everyone that attended. “My greatest memory has to be this year at the World Dairy Expo,” Johnny says, and it’s no shock as to why. Clark came home with the titles of Intermediate and Reserve Intermediate Champion as well as Reserve and Honorable Mention Grand Champion of the International Junior Milking Shorthorn Show. But the success doesn’t stop there! In the International Milking Shorthorn Show, he took home Intermediate Champion and Honorable Mention Grand Champion. “There was a lot going through my mind during Intermediate Champion of both shows. A lot of it was nerves and the thought: “Wow, I’m really in the middle of the ring at the biggest show in the world!” Clark said after reminiscing on his win.
What makes these wins even more sweet is that the cows go back to, what Clark says, are their most influential cow families within their herd. Both cows, Gin-Val Logic Lauretta-EXP and GinVal Princeton Leanna-EXP go back to GE Lake Effect MD Lauren. The “Lauren” family has had numerous All-American nominations. Another influential cow for Clark is Heavenly Creampuff. “She was the first cow I bought on my own,” he said. “As a Spring Calf she was Honorable Mention All American, as a Spring Yearling she was Unanimous All American, and as a Junior Three she was Honorable Mention All American.” She continues to hold a special spot for Clark in his show memories, with daughters and granddaughters doing well also. Getting into the other side of Clark’s elite passions; his baseball career. This past summer, Johnny played for the New England Ravens 14U, he and his team finished as the 9th seed in the New Balance Select League. That season he finished with a 0.98 ERA (earned run average) and a 0.58 WHIP (walks hits/ innings pitched.) In August, a trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina was made for baseball and not a vacation. While there, Clark played on the 14U Red New Balance Select National Team. The team was the runner-up in the Hang Ten Tournament at the Ripken Experience. Next summer, the New Hampshire Prospects 15U Team will continue to have Johnathon Clark on the field. As for the future, Clark said they are planning on downsizing the herd. Clark and his siblings, Cassandra, Zachary, and Thomas, are getting more involved in sports. They made the decision to put more focus on a fewer number of animals, mainly being heifers. This will decrease the things needed to be done when Johnny is gone at baseball tournaments in Florida, as well as other places. So, while the showstring may be smaller in the coming years, don’t get caught looking when it comes to the Gin-Vail prefix!

SPRITZ IS AN EXPO CHAMPION & NOW EX-96
TACI SCORES EX-96 DAYS PRIOR TO EXPO
Spritz’s success surely didn’t stop after her win in 2019 at the International Jersey Show! Standing in the similar position, Bri-Lin Valson Spritz was recently named the 2021 Grand Champion of the International Jersey Show. Not long after, Spritz was raised to EX-96 at 7-02. Congratulations to her breeders, Brian & Linda Raymer, ON, on breeding this exceptional cow; and to her owners, Vierra Dairy Farms of Hilmar, CA!
Just days before leaving for Madison, Alfinch Zelgodis Taci classified EX96! As few short days later, she was named HM Senior Champion after finishing 2nd in the Aged Cow class. Taci is owned by Frank & Diane Borba and Frank & Carol Borba, CA. Taci was the 2020 All-American 5-Year-Old and Reserve All American 4-Year-Old in 2019! Congratulations to her owners on a great cow!

Embarking on their pedigree journey is Chedhunt Holsteins in the UK. Treetop Alection Vanessa scores EX-95 and continues to be a farm favorite. In 2019, she was 1st Senior Cow at the Holstein UK Dairy show and is now fresh with her 7th calf.

Standing the true test of time, and doing it with grace is Potterswall Juno Glamour 2-ET. She recently turned 16-years-old and has made a total production of 103,683kg. She is scored EX-94 and is a 5 star brood cow. Not stopping there, Glamour has six generations on the farm, a son in AI, and was a RAUS Interbreed Champion! Congratulations to Potterswalls Jerseys of the UK for breeding such an incredible cow!
TEAMWORK GETS MALLORIE TO EX-96 Team O Kaliber Mallorie is now scored EX-96 at just 6-03! She is backed by two EX-92 dams then Irwindale Leduc Molly (2E-94), the dam of Team Durham Morgan (4E-96), who was HM All-American Production Cow in 2016! GERMAN MASTERS SALE 2021 The German Masters Sale 2021 goes in the books as a successful edition with an average of €5.365 on the 111 live lots that sold to buyers from 11 different countries, with the top seller ringing in at €28.000! The sale was held in the beautiful facilities of the RUW, the Auktionshalle in Fließem. Almost 1000 people attended the sale which created a great atmosphere throughout the complete sale. Also there were many people who attended the sale online through Farmersbid with 34% of the successful bidding came through the Farmersbid platform! The online bidders together with the bidders attending the sale created an unique interaction.
