President’s Message

I would like to start off by saying Thank You to the membership of the California Holstein Association for electing me as President of this great organization. It is truly an honor to help guide this organization forward- one that I have been a part of my entire life, and has helped mold me into the person I am today.

The Holstein year started out in Bakersfield where the South San Joaquin Holstein Club hosted our annual State Convention. This year’s event was a tremendous success with a great turnout of Senior and Junior members from across the state. I would like to thank the convention chairmen Joey & Laurie Airoso and Curtis & Stacy VandenBerge for the time and attention to detail to put on such a memorable event for attendees.

Our biggest event of the year, California State Holstein Show, was held on April 8-10 in Turlock. This year’s show was one of the largest attended in recent years, with nearly 200 head of California’s best B&W and R&W Holsteins paraded in front of judge Chip Savage from Maryland. Prevailing at the end of the day as our Grand Champion cow was Cnossome Mirand Penelope. Congratulations to Logan and Lauren Silveira. Putting on this event takes an enormous amount of time and donations to help offset the costs associated. A special

thank you to all the sponsors this year for your generous contributions. Please see page 43 for an entire list of all our donors, THANK YOU!

This year the National Holstein Convention will be held in Orlando, Florida. California has a talented group of juniors preparing to attend and compete in all the youth competitions. Also, Jon Chapman has been selected as Distinguished Junior Member Semi-Finalist. We wish all these juniors’ success and a lot of fun as they represent California. On the senior side of the National Convention, we have a familiar face to California- Mr. Hank Van Exel- who is seeking election as Holstein USA Vice President. We wish Hank luck in his campaign, and he has the full support of California Holstein. Delegates representing CA will be myself, Stephen Mast, Jason Vieira, and Davis Weststeyn. Lastly, Mr. Curtis VandenBerge is being awarded the prestigious Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder award. This is truly a special honor for Curtis and recognizing his herd, but also for California- as he is the first recipient from our state.

As we go through the summer and fall fair and show season, we wish all our members great success. Also, this summer we are fortunate to have Cow Camp back after skipping last year. Cow Camp 2026 will be held July 21-23 at Cal Poly, SLO. This is a great opportunity for our junior members to interact with each other in a fun learning environment.

Our newest program is back by popular demand: the California Holstein On-Farm Challenge will be held the week of November 9-14. We had a great turnout last year with over 130 cows on 19 farms being evaluated. Champion was Calori-D CRS Crush RyleET EX-95 for the Mast Family. Please watch for details later in the summer.

From the Office Manager

Welcome to the 2026 issue of the California Holstein News annual magazine! The first half of the year has definitely rushed by, being full of activities, farming, family and cows!

Our organization kicked off 2026 with a fantastic State Convention hosted by friends in the South San Joaquin Holstein Association. The sale was well attended and supported by consignors and buyers. Convention goers enjoyed the excitement of live hockey game and hospitality all weekend. Youth participation in various activities and competitions continues to rise, with solid representation from all areas of the state.

The State Show was a success for all- with great quality and quantity of cattle, and enthusiasm from exhibitors and allied industry supporters. The inclusion of Brown Swiss breeders was positive as well. Youth Challenge Contest included a record number of talented exhibitors who enjoyed friendly competition with the best young dairy showmen around. Strong spring dairy sales around the country evidenced the excitement for genetics and type, and high value being placed on cattle with a bright future. A huge thank you to all of the members & volunteers who have assisted with events, and gave their time and efforts in support of our club.

The pages of this magazine showcase the excellence and diversity of Holsteins in our state, and the people behind the far-reaching success of our local Holstein industry. It is my pleasure to be involved in this organization and to be part of this ‘Holstein Family’. The key to what makes our industry and association special is the people involved. Their passion, family values, hard work and camaraderie exist no matter where you travel. Because of the black and white cow (and red & white and brown…), we have all been fortunate enough to make friendships near and far. I urge you to take time to be thankful for the health and ability to enjoy experiences, and be mindful of the impact you leave on those around you.

The California Holstein Association’s goal continues to be to advertise and promote Registered Holsteins to enthusiasts locally, around the

country, and internationally. We aim to help members capitalize on the consistent added value Registered Holsteins provide in this always-evolving industry. With this in mind, services are available to aid in advertising for sales and events- we invite you to inquire further.

The future of our club is bright- as the California Junior Holstein Club encourages youth and develops skills for them to become leaders in agriculture. The programs we offer help shape these eager young people into confident, articulate ambassadors for the dairy community. From the responsibilities of raising show animals, to knowledge and competitiveness gained in dairy bowl and dairy jeopardy, poise in public speaking and networking at events, our junior members have the confidence and capacity to go far in whatever they pursue. As this magazine gets printed, 17 juniors will be travelling to compete and represent CA at the National Convention in Orlando! In late July a large group will be learning and having fun at Cow Camp hosted graciously by Cal Poly faculty & students.

This magazine is available online year-round on our website www. caholstein.com and distributed nationwide. Additional copies are available from the office upon request if you have an opportunity to share our publication with visitors. Thank you to the team at Cowsmopolitan as publishers and designers of this year’s premium magazine.

I invite each of you to take part in our various activities in the upcoming months, and I look forward to working with you all alongside our Board of Directors. We are especially excited to bring back the ‘On Farm Challenge’ this fall and spotlight outstanding Holsteins in their home environments. Please don’t hesitate to contact me should you have any questions about our Association, or would like to get involved. Follow the California Holstein Association on Facebook, Instagram and the club website to stay current on events and updates- and in turn, feel free to share your Holstein news with us as well!

Holstein Association USA Field Representative

Holstein Association USA continues to prioritize member engagement and connection across the country, and California remains a strong and active region within our Association. Through participation in programs, events, and leadership opportunities, California members continue to demonstrate their commitment to the Holstein breed and the future of the dairy industry.

One example is the role California members play in leadership within Holstein Association USA. During the 2025 National Holstein Convention and 139th Annual Meeting, Bill Genasci retired as Region 9 Director. Filling his spot on the Holstein Association USA Board as Region 9 Director is Joey Ariso of Tipton, California. This year, Hank Van Excel of Lodi, California is running for the Vice President position. Thank you to Bill, Joey, and Hank, as well as other California members who have served on and ran for board positions over the years, for their willingness to serve our association.

Vierra Dairy in Hilmar, California was the location of the 2026 Holstein Association USA Judges Conference this past February. The event drew attendees from around the country, giving them the opportunity to sharpen their judging skills and understanding of Holstein cattle evaluation.

Looking ahead to the 2026 National Holstein Convention, California will be well represented. Jon Chapman will be recognized as a Distinguished Junior Member semifinalist, while other members of the Junior Holstein Association will compete in various competitions. On the adult side, Curtis Vanden Berge was selected as the Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder. Congratulations to all! Across programs and services, California members continue to find value in participation with Holstein Association USA. From registrations and classifications to genetic services and herd

management tools, engagement in core programs remains strong. This was reflected in 2025 year end reports, which show an increase in Registration, Basic ID, and Classification.

At Holstein Association USA, we’re prioritizing new ways to stay engaged with you, too. One of these efforts in the Holstein Connections podcast, launched in June 2025. The podcast covers a wide range of topics, from the TPI formula update and introduction of the Holstein Conformation Composite, to conversations with recent award winners. Give it a listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or the Holstein Association website.

In January of 2026, we created an email newsletter called Holstein Insider. Sent directly to your inbox each month, the newsletter provides quick updates on the latest news, information, deadlines, and events from Holstein Association USA. To sign up for the email newsletter, visit holsteinusa.jotform.com/253645344326963 or click on the button on the homepage of holsteinusa.com.

The success of Holstein Association USA is built on active and engaged members, and California continues to exemplify this commitment. Through leadership, participation, and investment in the future, California Holstein breeders play a key role in advancing the mission of the Association and ensuring continued success for generations to come.

Holstein Association USA National Director’s Report

After my election to the Holstein USA board last June, I attended an orientation in Brattleboro in October and had a chance to meet key people and get familiar with the organization and its operations. The orientation was helpful in getting myself up to speed and I was able to gather some great information to help me be an effective board member. My first meeting was held in Louisville, KY in November where the major focus was adopting the 2026 budget. The board approved some price increases to help balance the budget and hopefully end the annual draw for operations from the reserve fund. My meeting was cut short as I had to leave a half day early to attend a good friend of mine’s wife’s funeral. Jeanette Porter will be missed by many- she was a lifelong supporter of youth activities and at the Western Classic Junior Show we created an award in her honor called the HEART OF GOLD Award which will be presented annually to someone who goes above and beyond to help youth. The first recipient was Veterinarian Matt Sumner. He was responsible for guidance and implementation of health protocols that allowed the 2025 show to be held during the bird flu outbreak.

My second Holstein board meeting was held in Kansas City in March. A big topic of discussion was the TPI formula, which ultimately led to adopting multiple changes. The weighting on protein was increased, and the weighting on fat was decreased to reflect rising market

demand for milk protein. The second major alteration was introducing the new Holstein Conformation composite (HCC), which will help breeders better measure balance in the Holstein cow. As we look into the future, I believe both of these changes are definitely moving in the right direction. While there have been some concerns raised about the classification of cows that are too tall being penalized, but I believe this isn’t about big- it’s about extreme stature, lacking balance and not enough strength. There’s no doubt in my mind that a focus on overall balance and correctness is beneficial for the entire Holstein population.

My first year on the Holstein USA board has been gratifying and I hope to be able to represent all who make a living milking and working with the Holstein cow.

Lastly, thank you to Bill Genasci, previous Region 9 Board member, for his service and dedication.

Doug Maddox Memorial Senior Breeder of the Year

Take a passion for California agriculture, a love for the Holstein cow and wrap it all up in an affable personality, and you’ve found it in the 2026 Doug Maddox Memorial Senior Breeder of the Year award winner: Frank Gambonini.

With deep roots in the North Bay region, where his great-great-grandfather landed after emigrating from Switzerland, Frank was the fourth generation growing up on his family’s dairy in Petaluma. His father, George, purchased the first registered Holsteins for Frank and his sisters to show. While as a junior member, Frank only showed on the local level, he developed an appreciation for the show ring that he would pass on to his own kids.

Frank graduated with a Dairy Science degree from Cal Poly, and maintains that his best life accomplishment was marrying his wife, Stacey. They had three daughters, Francesca, Alexandra, and Samantha, all of whom developed their own love for dairy cattle and agriculture.

The Gambonini herd carried the ‘Gamlake’ prefix, a nod to the family name and to the Lakeville Highway address of the farm. At one point, the herd numbered 600 cows. The dairy transitioned to an organic management system in 2007, which made sense with their location near Petaluma and their access to lush pasture, and the milking herd then numbered 200.

Over the years, Frank and his daughters bred 61 Excellent cows, 277 Very Good cows, five Dams of Merit and three Gold Medal Dams.

The herd built a reputation for having super frames, wide rumps, and great rear udders, which indicates that there may have been some success in the show ring along the way.

Among those Excellent cows were one EX95 point cow, three scored EX-94, two scored EX-93, and five at EX-92. Two of their highest scored cows became nationally known after the family took a trip to Madison, WI for World Dairy Expo in 2017.

At that show, APGambo Atwood Keenan, bred by Alexandra, won the Junior 3-Year-Old class and was named Intermediate Champion and Champion Bred & Owned at the International Junior Holstein Show. She went on to claim the Junior All-American Junior 3-Year-Old title at the end of the year. Her show string companion, Gamlake Destry Sallie, placed 3rd in the 5-Year-Old class, and was Best Bred & Owned. She also garnered year-end awards when she was nominated Junior All-American 5-Year-Old.

Both cows saw continued success in the next two years with Keenan being scored EX-95, twice winning Grand Championships at the CA State Holstein Show and Western Spring National, and nominated All-American Aged Cow in 2020 for Alex and her partners, Stephen & Patrick Maddox.

Sallie, now EX-94, returned to Madison in 2018 and came home with all the hardware from the International Junior Holstein Show where she was Grand Champion, Champion Bred & Owned, and eventually, Reserve Supreme Champion of the WDE Junior shows.

AJ Quist Memorial Young Breeder of the Year

It’s a real highlight that the 2026 AJ Quist Memorial Young Breeder of the Year recipient is a state member that has brought the national spotlight to California Holsteins! Joseph Silva grew up in the dairy business in the Modesto area, where he started showing and judging cattle while he was in high school with the help of Tony Garcia, Sr.

He continued his education at Modesto Junior College, where in addition to his class load, he became a member of the dairy judging team. His hard work and commitment to the team paid off handsomely in 2002, when he was the High Individual at the Post-Secondary Dairy Cattle judging contest at World Dairy Expo.

In 2018, he and Emanuel Azevedo, purchased Dinomi Gchip Ryley 11550-ET, and sold her daughter in the California Convention Sale. In 2019, he and Aidan Azevedo purchased Luck-E Avalanche Athena, now EX-93, and established the West-Adub prefix. Athena became a foundation cow for their partnership, and transmitted high-type and great udders to her offspring.

The philosophy of investing in great breeding cow families like the Elegance, Apache, and Ryley families has been the key to his success in breeding over 100 Very Good and Excellent cows from his small herd.

Small numbers are no limit to national and international success, however, and the past few years have seen the ‘West-Adub’ prefix announced at shows across the continent. West-Adub Hancock Aria EX93, owned by Phillip Airoso, was the Reserve Intermediate Champion at the Western Classic, while West-Adub Hancock Ezra EX-93 was the Supreme Champion at this year’s edition of the Western Classic for Logan & Lauren Silviera.

West-Adub Jagger Adeline EX-90 carries high genomic type numbers of +3.45T, and has been a winner at shows the last couple of year in Wisconsin for Royal Vista Holsteins. West-Adub Haxl Ariana sold for

$11,000 in the California State Convention Sale and went on to be named Junior Champion at the 2026 California State Holstein

Of course, the biggest name of all is West-Adub Lambda Sadie VG-89-CAN, the 2025 All-American and All-Canadian Junior 3-YearOld who had wins on the biggest Holstein show stages - the International Holstein Show at World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI; and the National Holstein Show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, ON. Sadie was Intermediate Champion at both shows, and won a legion of fans across North America.

Sadie was ‘discovered’ at the 2024 California State Holstein Show, where she was the Reserve All-CA Junior 2-Year-Old, and proves the maxim that good cows make money for everyone. She has changed ownership several times, and this spring captured the Grand Champion title at the BC Spring Show for her owners, Westcoast Holsteins. This summer, she is the notable Lot 1 in the Butlerview Parade of Perfection Sale.

Sadie’s daughter, West-Adub Architect Sage VG-88, is following in her mother’s footsteps. The $63,000 sale topper at the 2026 Amplify Sale, she was purchased by the sale host, Vierra Dairy of HIlmar, CA. Sage then traveled to the CA State Holstein Show where she won the Junior 2-Year-Old class and was named Reserve Intermediate Champion.

Joseph is delighted to see West-Adub cattle do well for others, but finds much of his own satisfaction in giving back to the youth of the CA Holstein industry. He loves to walk herds and to help young members gain expertise and have success of their own in the show ring.

Joseph and his wife, Julianne, reside in Atwater, CA with their three children, Weston (8), Max (6), and Ellie (2). He has worked for Alta Genetics for the past 17 years, but always finds the time to have a conversation with a junior member or fellow breeder!

CALIFORNIA DAIRY YOUTH CHALLENGE

The 4th Annual Youth Challenge was held during the CA State Shows and welcomed 33 youth exhibiting Holsteins, Jerseys and Brown Swiss! Designed to recognize young dairy enthusiasts in their work with showing cattle, encourage participation and promote friendly competition, while improving skills and knowledge. A big THANK YOU to Kirby Manufacturing for sponsoring the prizes for this year’s contest. This contest was open to all youth ages 9-21 and consisted of four equally weighted portions:

· A Dairy Judging Contest of 4 classes utilizing the tremendous quality cattle on the grounds for the show tested juniors’ type analysis skills

· A written exam covering practical husbandry knowledge and questions sourced from the Holstein Foundation workbook series

· Showmanship placing

New in 2024, an interview portion was added. Youth met with an industry professional at their cattle to present and describe their project. The fitting contest was revamped to a “bring your own calf’ format to allow more diverse participation. This was an optional part of the Youth Challenge. These positive changes were sparked by Junior club discussion and leadership on the officer team.

Junior Presidents’ Message

Hello! It’s my privilege to serve as your 2026-27 California Junior Holstein Association Co-President alongside Heather Hodges. I am a 17 year old rising senior at Turlock High School, and am proud to be an 11th generation farmer. My involvement with the Holstein cow has provided countless opportunities, which began with working on our family farm to care for and develop high end genetics. I have learned responsibility, work ethic, determination, and the value of teamwork. My current herd consists of 36 head, primarily owned with my siblings. As a member of the California Junior Holstein Association for the past 10 years I have expanded my leadership capabilities, improved study & research skills, and practiced public speaking. In attending Holstein association events, I have had the chance to meet and build friendships with other youth, as well as interact with industry professionals and Holstein breeders. Showing cattle has allowed me to be an ambassador for production agriculture in communicating with the public and educating consumers.

I would like to personally extend an invitation to all of our current (and prospective) CA Junior Holstein members to participate in the various activities offered by our organization throughout the year. There are many ways to get involved and have fun. I encourage you to try out something new, bring a friend, and make some new connections! You can recruit new members from your local community, 4-H and FFA. We welcome each of you to bring your unique perspectives, ideas and abilities to better our association!

• Summer Cow Camp gives attendees the chance to learn about the dairy industry through classroom and hands-on instruction. We’re excited to have Cal Poly hosting us July 21-23.

• The annual Junior Planning Conference happens in November, and serves as an opportunity to discuss and develop future activities in addition to enjoying games and camaraderie.

• State Convention offers a wide variety of contests and workshops. Please check out the following pages featuring 2026 results to get a glimpse of what is available. Involvement on the state level can earn you a spot to compete at the National Holstein Convention contests.

• The State Holstein Show is held in April and showcases youth exhibitors. The Youth Challenge Contest was established in 2022 and now offers five components- showmanship, knowledge exam, judging contest, interview, and fitting contest. The 2026 State Show had over 100 junior exhibitors, 75 showmanship participants, and 33 Youth Challenge contestants.

• Junior Holstein Show Contest is a state version of ‘All-Americans’ recognizing animals shown successfully throughout the year.

• Our officer team is looking forward to increasing engagement with membership on social media platforms in the coming year. Check out our Instagram page @cajrholsteinassociation. Please share highlights with us throughout the year!

Best of luck to our members who are representing CA at the National Holstein Convention in Orlando, Florida!

BREEDER OF THE FUTURE

BOY

Hayden McIsaac has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to the Holstein breed and the dairy industry throughout his life. Growing up on his family’s sixth-generation dairy farm in Petaluma, California, he has developed a strong foundation in dairy management, breeding, and leadership. Today, Hayden owns or co-owns 71 registered Holsteins, including six generations descended from the first heifer he received as a young child. Through careful breeding decisions and reinvestment of profits from cattle sales, he has successfully expanded and improved his herd over the years.

Hayden is actively involved in the daily operation of the family dairy. His responsibilities include feeding cattle, bedding stalls, maintaining pastures, raising calves, preparing animals for shows and classification, and assisting with breeding decisions. He takes pride in developing high-quality cattle and has earned recognition as the breeder of multiple Excellent cows. His hands-on involvement has given him valuable experience and a deep understanding of the dairy industry.

A dedicated member of the California Junior Holstein Association, Hayden currently serves as a Junior Board Officer at both the state and local levels. He has participated in numerous Holstein youth activities, including Dairy Bowl, Dairy Jeopardy, judging contests, public speaking, fitting competitions, and state conventions. His accomplishments include earning the California Young Breeder of the Future Boy title, receiving multiple All-American nominations, and achieving success at county, state, national, and international dairy shows. His cattle have earned championship honors at prestigious events such as the California State Fair, World Dairy Expo, and the North American International Livestock Exposition.

In addition to his dairy accomplishments, Hayden is an active participant in 4-H, FFA, community service, and school activities. He has held leadership positions, competed on judging teams, and volunteered dozens of hours supporting local youth sports programs. Through his leadership, work ethic, and passion for registered Holsteins, Hayden has established himself as a strong advocate for the dairy industry and an excellent representative of the next generation of dairy producers.

YOUNG BREEDER OF THE FUTURE GIRL

BREEDER OF THE FUTURE GIRL

Caroline Vieira is a dedicated and accomplished young dairy producer whose passion for the Holstein breed has been demonstrated through seven years of active involvement in the California Junior Holstein Association and the dairy industry. At just 15 years old, Caroline has independently developed and financed a herd of 20 Holsteins, consisting of 10 cows and 10 heifers. Through careful breeding decisions, herd management, and a commitment to improving genetics, she has built a successful dairy project housed at her family’s dairy farm in Stockton, California.

Caroline plays an active role in selecting breeding sires, caring for heifers, and preparing animals for competition. Her efforts have resulted in numerous accomplishments, including multiple Supreme Champion Dairy Female and Supreme Champion Dairy Bull titles, Registered Holstein Junior Champion honors, and Advanced 4-H Showmanship recognition. Her success reflects both her knowledge of dairy cattle and her dedication to excellence.

Beyond the show ring, Caroline has been deeply involved in California Junior Holstein activities, participating in Dairy Bowl, Dairy Jeopardy, Youth Challenge, public speaking contests, and state conventions. She represented California at the National Holstein Convention, where her Dairy Bowl team earned fourth place nationally. She was also previously recognized as the Young Breeder of the Future Girl.

Caroline’s leadership extends into 4-H, FFA, and school organizations. She has served as President, Secretary, and Reporter in 4-H and currently holds leadership positions in multiple school clubs. Her FFA accomplishments include state-level success in Parliamentary Procedure, Agronomy, Creed Speaking, and Opening/Closing Ceremonies. She also serves as chairman of her chapter’s Community Service Committee. Caroline exemplifies the qualities of a future dairy industry leader through her independence, maturity, advocacy, and commitment to agricultural education. Her achievements, leadership, and passion for breeding high-quality Holsteins make her an outstanding individual for the Breeder of the Future Award.

This year’s Breeder of the Future Girl is 12-year-old Kinley Martin of Tulare, CA. Kinley is a dedicated young dairy enthusiast whose passion for registered Holsteins is evident through her involvement in breeding, showing, and herd management. As a partner in DJKK Holsteins and Jerseys, she helps care for a herd of 35 animals and takes an active role in feeding, breeding decisions, show preparation, clipping, washing, and maintaining facilities. She has helped grow and finance her project through the sale of replacement heifers and careful reinvestment in her herd.

Kinley is an active participant in the California Junior Holstein Association, competing in Dairy Bowl, Dairy Jeopardy, prepared speaking, interviews, and knowledge contests. She has also served in leadership roles and represented California at the National Holstein Convention. Her accomplishments include numerous awards in showing, showmanship, public speaking, and judging, along with recognition for breeding quality cattle. Outside of dairy activities, Kinley excels academically, participates in school and community organizations, and volunteers her time. Her leadership, work ethic, and enthusiasm make her an outstanding Young Breeder of the Future candidate.

NATIONAL DISTINGUISHED JUNIOR MEMBER SEMI-FINALIST

Putting together this Distinguished Junior Member book allowed me to reflect on not only my years of Junior Holstein activities, but the much broader impact the Holstein cow and the dairy industry has had on me. Holsteins have shaped what my everyday life and schedule looked like for a large majority of days, and the experiences enjoyed because of Holstein-related activities has thoroughly impacted the trajectory of my youth. Imagining 9 year old me, first year ‘official’ Junior member, he wouldn’t believe the adventures and achievements that have taken place in the showring, Holstein contests and judging, and the industry connections made. The Holstein cow has allowed me to travel and develop friendships from coast to coast while building my personal and professional network and skills.

My home operation is a family owned and operated dairy in Turlock, CA- in the heart of the agriculturally rich and diverse San Joaquin Valley. My stepfather Robert acts as general manager, with input and labor contribution from my mom, myself and three younger sisters. The farm consists of 300 head of milking Holsteins and accompanying youngstock. A limited land base of forty acres grows winter forage and grass haylage, with all other feed purchased. The herd is on official DHIA test processed through Agritech, and the registered portion utilizes Holstein Classification biannually. Milking females are housed primarily in free stall barns, with one string and prefresh cows on a pack. Elite pedigree individuals are housed in six box stalls in a separate barn, and a handful of individual and small group pens. Recycled dried manure is utilized as bedding during the dry summer, and almond hulls and/or shavings are added as needed, especially during the winter. Calves are registered with EasyID and raised in plastic hutches with exterior fenced in space to accommodate for exercise and fresh air. This allows for enhanced biosecurity with limited calf to calf contact; and enables whoever is feeding calves to monitor individual calf feed intake and health. Our calves stay on milk longer than average, as they are fed fresh whole milk from the box stall cows milked with portable unit. After graduating from the hutches, calves are moved into small pens containing 4-5 calves to adjust to competition. As they mature, calves move on to larger group pens and are introduced to headlocks. Bred heifers and dry cows are housed in dry lots with shade.

Over time my jobs and responsibilities have expanded from the typical ‘kid jobs’ of watching gates, pushing in hay, and cleaning pens and equipment. Along the way I have developed skills that translate positively and usefully to other endeavors. The attention to detail required in raising healthy calves I have found beneficial in completing school projects. Patience and perseverance is key when training heifers to show (similar to the perseverance required to pass college algebra). This is an area I have put in countless hours hoping my calves would reach their potential and find success. Heifers contending for a space on the showring roster are housed adjacent to our home. They enjoy a five acre pasture, simple pole barn, and area to keep smaller calves apart. This allows the heifers to be easily handled and haltered to wash and walk. They are fed a modified diet of long stem grass, oat or sudan hay, and custom high protein pellet and corn mix- depending on age and condition.

Thinking back again to 9 year old me….my first time competing in showmanship at the California State Holstein Show, my unsteady and insecure performance earned last place in a large class. From the wrong end of that line-up, little JW did not foresee standing in the top 5 at World Dairy Expo Senior Showmanship ten years later. Between those two trips to the ring, I dedicated myself to honing cattle presentation skills, and now take great pride in showing home bred animals to

market our herd’s genetics. At that same show, my winter calf placed in the bottom half of her class- not even a ribbon. That JW wouldn’t have guessed breeding and exhibiting the Red and White Junior Champion of the 2025 CA State Holstein Show. Showing is something that our family enjoys together- setting goals and reaching for improvement. The teamwork, friendly competition, and camaraderie amongst exhibitors is something I find very special, and there’s nothing quite like the adrenaline running through your veins as you walk into the ring. One of my proudest accomplishments is winning Premier Breeder of the 2023 CA State Junior Show and having the Best Bred and Owned Cow.

Learning how to select the best heifers and cows to show, and following the Holstein Classifier was my early introduction to dairy cattle evaluation. Picking up vocabulary and evaluation priorities cows-side. A tradition in our family is for everyone to predict classification scores on ~ten cows, and the person off by the fewest points earns a prize. Most importantly bragging rights! Being a part of the Turlock FFA Judging Team gave me my first formal judging contest exposure. Following high school I took classes at Modesto Junior College in order to join their judging team. Ultimately, we secured back to back 1st team awards at World Dairy Expo and NAILE Post Secondary Contests in 2024. Now a member of the Iowa State judging team, I have a lofty goal of attaining top 5 individual and 1st place team at the 2026 WDE Intercollegiate Contest. Judging has given me confidence in decision making and defending my opinions, and greatly improved my articulation abilities in using concise clear terminology.

Junior Holstein programs and activities on both the state and national level have provided the framework for me to grow into a servant leader and collaborator. Shy JW on the second place novice dairy bowl team would not recognize a poised and engaging Holstein USA Junior Advisory Committee Chairman speaking at a podium in front of hundreds of members.

Knowledge competitions of Dairy Bowl and Jeopardy have helped me develop study habits from an early age, and virtual interviews have built a level of comfort made possible by an encouraging environment. Junior Holstein programs have often pushed me outside my comfort zone and I have embraced challenges in order to become more involved, to lead by example, and better serve membership. While running for the JAC in 2024 I was tasked with running a game station, ‘Simon Says’, at the junior mixer night. (Although hesitant, I really had no choice when Kelli asked!) The game ended up being a huge hit, as I engaged with juniors from many different states. This evening made me realize a skill I possess as a leader is encouraging participation and welcoming younger members and peers with enthusiasm. Another instance when Holstein USA has pushed me to grow was being featured in a Holstein Connections podcast alongside fellow youth JAC representatives. While my performance was far from perfect, I appreciated the opportunity to try something new and connect with listeners on the audio platformproving even if you’re nervous, take the chance and try it.

Within the past few years, I have become an asset to our farm operation with my skills in construction, fabrication, and repair. With an aging dairy facility, there is always a way to utilize problem solving on something to fix or remodel. The local FFA program introduced me to welding in my sophomore year, after Covid. My first project was show stallend dividers, custom designed with extensions, and made from steel. Following that, I built a free stall groomer skidsteer attachment that includes a hydraulic raisable arm. This rake helps maintain and improve

Jon Chapman

cow comfort by keeping the beds fluffy. Capably completing these projects led me to pursue further training. I first obtained certification in various processes through Merced College, as a start to the Associates Degree in Welding Technology. I completed this program in May 2025, graduating with Honors. Along the way I have fixed the feed wagon augur and spout multiple times, installed fan stands to keep heifers cool, put gates and stalls back together, and upgraded feed bunk areas. All these contributed to the health and comfort of our animals, ease and efficiency of daily chores, and saved the farm costs of hiring outside labor. Starting in 2023, I’ve operated a custom mobile welding businessserving residential and farm customers with reliability and value. Some larger projects completed include installation of 90 sections of heifer headlocks and fabrication & design of a driveway gate.

I have somewhat of a diversified agriculture background, as I help manage my dad’s twenty acre almond orchard. This gave me some of my initial training in operating heavy machinery, such as orchard tractor with various implements. I’m now proficient in driving a skidsteer and loader- often used around the dairy and in periodic contract construction work. Within the almond enterprise, I am responsible for many of the management tasks- I fertilize trees with a trailer spreader, control weeds with herbicide spray from an implement attached to tractor, control pests, and mow mid-rows with a flail mower. I’ve learned safety protocols of handling chemicals and hazardous materials, in addition to fire safety when burning brush such as tree prunings and orchard waste. During the summer- May through September- I am the primary irrigation technician. Communicating with irrigation district to access flow, controlling water amounts to the crop, replacing and moving pipelines with the goal of orchard health and maximizing crop production while watching input costs.

Currently, I am a student Iowa State University, majoring in Agriculture Systems Technology. An active member of the ISU Dairy Science

Club, I have jumped right into leadership roles. In 2026 I am serving as co-chairman of the Education Committee- coordinating events for elementary and high school students to learn about dairy farming and dairy cattle. As part of the Sale and Show Committee, I am helping facilitate the Cardinal & Gold Classic Sale to be held February 28. I have successfully used my network to obtain consignments and will be advertising lots on social media. This sale has provided the opportunity for me to expand my limited knowledge and experience in event planning and management. I’m the designated point person for facilities and day-of execution- specifically budgeting, venue space, securing audio visual components and affordable hospitality. Communicating clearly with committee members, vendors, potential consignors & buyers, has been educational and fulfilling.

Courses at ISU within my major- including precision agriculture, various ag sciences, farm management, technology and hands-on laboratories will further prepare me for a future in the agriculture industry. Specifically, I am interested in dairy construction as of right now. However, I would like to explore other areas of production agriculture such as crop farming, feed or mill operation. I hope to secure summer internships to gain insight in fields I don’t have direct knowledge of yet. Being at school in a new geographic region definitely can expose me to different practices and career opportunities. Throughout all of the activities I am involved in, I strive to uphold the highest standards of integrity, reliability, and honesty with the goal of building the reputation of someone who others want to work with- as an employee, teammate, and leader. I will forever be grateful for the black and white cow, support of my family and Holstein advisors who have provided my with a solid foundation in the agriculture community. I intend to continue raising Holsteins and building my herd beyond my Junior career. Into the future I hope to start judging local shows and showmanship. Perhaps I can positively influence a junior member in their first pair of white pants holding the end of a tiny calf’s halter.

Remembering Friends

FREDERICK A. DENIER

Frederick A. Denier (66) passed away on May 5, 2026 at John Muir Hospital Walnut Creek. After a courageous time fighting an anoxic brain injury from a cardiac arrest, he never gave up on recovering. He was a kind and humble man. Fred, a Galt native, was born on November 14, 1959, in Lodi, CA.

He attended Galt Elementary Schools, Galt High School class of 1977, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo class of 1981. In high school, he was active in Galt 4-H and Galt FFA Chapter showing dairy cattle and earned the American Farmer Degree. In college, he graduated with a bachelors in Dairy Science, ranked at the top nationally in dairy cattle judging, and at the top of his class of 1981.

After graduation from college, he began working at the family dairy farm, Cal-Denier Dairy, as the operating manager along with his brother, Richard Denier, for 40 years. Over the years, Fred grew the herd to have one of the finest registered Holstein breeds in the world, where he was recognized by the National Dairy Shrine as the most Progressive Dairy Producer in 2000. Fred was very proud of his herd and his devoted staff.

He was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend to all he knew. He enjoyed most being an active leader in the Boy Scouts of America. He helped his two sons reach the rank of Eagle Scout. Fred was active in the California Milk Advisory Board, Western United Dairymen, Dairy Council of California, Ripon Swiss Club and was proud of his heritage. Fred developed a strong work ethic working with his father Alfred, Uncles Louis and Walter Denier working cattle year-round at age 8 under the

family business of A. Denier & Sons. Fred was a movie buff especially sci-fi and American history and competed in Fencing tournaments around the state. He traveled internationally to Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, and Europe.

He was preceded in death by his parents Alfred and Rosa Denier, sister Rosemary Denier, and daughter Lindsay Denier. He is survived by his wife of 35 years Cathy Denier, his sons Jonathan and Trevor Denier, brothers Larry and Richard Denier, and many nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all those who loved him.

JEANNETTE ANSOLABEHERE PORTER

Jeannette passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on November 11, 2025. Born on July 15, 1942, to Pascal and Marie Ansolabehere, Jeannette grew up in Bakersfield, attending Beardsley Elementary and graduating from Garces Memorial High School.

On August 3, 1963, at St. Francis Church, Jeannette married the love of her life, Herman Porter. Together, they raised two wonderful daughters and were later blessed with four grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren, who brought her immense joy throughout her life.

After raising her girls, Jeannette devoted 25 years to the Panama School District, working in food service. Beyond her career, she was known for her selfless heart and unwavering kindness. She spent many years involved with 4-H, always chasing the livestock shows with her family and friends. Jeannette also known as Mema to many, always put others before herself, offering help, comfort, and love to anyone who needed it – often before

they even asked. Her gentle spirit and generous heart touched countless lives and left a lasting mark on everyone who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Pascal and Marie; her in-laws, Walter and Laveta Porter; her brother, Frank; her sister, Louise; and her brothers-in-law, Delbert Porter, Francisco Unamuno, and Joe Freitas.

Jeannette is survived by her devoted husband, Herman; her loving daughters, Teresa Andrews (Orville) and Kristine Hudson (Paul); her cherished grandchildren, Justin (Brittany), Amy and Anna Andrews, and Brad Hudson; and great-grandchildren, Trinity, Tristan, and Tatum. She is also survived by her sister, Pauline Freitas; brother, Pascal Ansolabehere (Shirley); brother-in-law, Rick Porter (DeLynne); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jeannette will be remembered for her warm smile, generous heart, and unwavering love for her family. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy of kindness and compassion will continue to live on through all those whose lives she touched. Her family takes comfort in knowing that she is now at peace and reunited with loved ones who went before her.

JEFFREY ROBERT WILBUR

Jeffrey Robert Wilbur, born October 17, 1965, departed this life on November 3, 2025, at the age of 60. His steady character was rooted in a deep faith and unwavering devotion to his wife and daughters, values that defined him as a husband, dad, papa, son, brother, uncle, friend, AGR brother, dairyman and leader. Guided by a profound spiritual strength, Jeff was a consistent source of unconditional love and encouragement to all who knew him.

To have known Jeff was to experience joy in motion.

Born and raised in Tulare, California, Jeff dedicated his life to the land, working as a dairyman and farmer. He often moved by the rhythm of the ranch, fostering a deep connection to the cattle and an even deeper connection to his ever-growing community.

Jeff radiated an approachable presence. His legacy includes the countless relationships he forged across the valleys, meadows and mountains of life. He famously loved two categories of people: those

he knew well and those he was just getting to know. He filled his days to the brim in ways that cast the joy of fellowship, including working alongside others, cooking and barbecuing, gathering around a fire, dancing, playing pickleball, attending auctions, skiing, traveling, and simply sharing life. Living with contagious enthusiasm, Jeff’s spirit will continue to ripple through the countless lives he touched.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Lisa Wilbur; his three daughters, Elizabeth (Austin) Burmeister, Sarah Wilbur, and Grace (Brendan) Bentley; his grandson, Kase Burmeister; his parents, Bob and Carolyn Wilbur; and his sisters, Katie (Raymond) Van Beek and Kristin (Michael) Schussel, along with a sea of beloved extended family and friends.

Less risk. More results.
