Exels-PA Crush Lovett is a 2X Grand Champion so far in 2025, claiming top honors at the California Spring Spectacular (State Show) and the Western National Spring Holstein Show. The aged cow is owned by Exel’s Holsteins.
President’s Message
Oh what a year it has been! Life is constantly changing both up and down. Last fall and into winter we all saw the devastation that a single virus can bring to both our cows and our sanity. This added a lot of uncertainty to what the future of showing dairy cattle will look like going forward. However the determination of California Holstein breeders prevailed and we were able to have both the Western Classic Junior Show and the California Spring Spectacular. Some modifications had to be made on the fly and locations had to change but in the end I would like to congratulate all the exhibitors and the beautiful cattle that they brought out to compete with. John Erbsen did a great job sorting through both Holsteins and Jerseys, cows and heifers and Hank Van Exel had a banner trip bringing home both Junior Champion with Exels Aircraft Mari 29647 and Grand Champion with Exels-PA Crush Lovett. Intermediate Champion was claimed by R, R, W Matheron and M. Parsons with Hilmar Hanans 19490. We can all look forward to next year with the Spring Spectacular heading back north. Planning conference will be held this fall and I would like to invite all to attend. This is a good time to make your voice and opinions heard and cast your vote on who will be the judge next year.
Redwood Empire Holstein Club hosted a great convention this past January in Petaluma. We were all welcomed to this event with wet winter weather. Junior events were plentiful with Dairy Jeopardy
and Dairy Bowl being two of the big highlights. Many older junior members were able to earn a scholarship as we continue to see our youth move on in life and enter college. The weekend of events kicked off with Host Night and the State Sale being at Gambonini’s barn. The chilly temperature did not keep the sale from heating up with the gavel falling on the top seller BUDJON-MB DJHN BLUE EYES-ET for a impressive $29,000. Thank you to John Cunningham for consigning this lot that was purchased by Arizona Dairy Company and Grai-Rose Cattle. A lot of impressive cattle sold this night and the commodore and fellowship was second to none. The following night at Senior Banquet our coveted Doug Maddox Senior breeder award was presented to Les Davis for all of the accomplishments he achieved breeding and developing cattle. The AJ Quist Young Breeder award was presented to Tony Garcia Jr. Tony is also a active board member for the association and well deserving of this award. We can all look forward to next year being hosted by South San Joaquin Holstein Club and then followed by Merced Club in 2027.
President
As we move toward the National Convention in St. Louis his year I would like to congratulate all the juniors who will be attended and competing in the events. California will be well represented by some of our incredible junior members.
This October we will be launching our very first On Farm Challenge after being delayed from last year. This will be a great way for breeders to get their very best cows looked at and compared to other herds around the State. The classes will be broken down by lactation and a judge will arrive at your dairy where the cows work and perform everyday. Cattle will need to be separated and easy to see by the judge. There will not be any time to socialize. We will cover the entire state and anybody who wants to participate in less than a week. Details are still in progress but start thinking now about who might be in your group to present.
Two very important people to me who help make my job easy and this Association run flawlessly are Robert and Kate Teixeira. Robert being Vice President on the board and Show Chairperson for State Show. Even though the big decisions are made in group by the board all the small details of having the California Spring Spectacular fall on Roberts shoulders. The little things like stall setup and design along with other pesky tasks were all handled efficiently by Robert. Thank you.

Lastly I would like to thank all of you. The breeders and members that keep us as an active association. Planning events that are well attended is always rewarding to everyone involved. California bred Holstein cattle are recognized and watched across the globe and I do not anticipate this changing anytime soon. God has given us all the opportunity to care for a incredible animal everyday and we all need to be thankful for the many blessings we have.

From the Office Manager
Welcome to the 2025 issue of the California Holstein News annual magazine! The first half of the year has definitely rushed by, being full of activities, farming, family and cows!
Our organization kicked off 2025 with a fantastic State Convention hosted by friends in the Redwood Empire Holstein Association. The sale was well attended and supported by consignors and buyers at the beautiful Gambonini Ranch. Youth participation in various activities and competitions continues to rise, with solid representation from all areas of the state. The Spring Spectacular- modified version of the State Show, was a success in simply happening! And a testament to the dedication of our association leadership and the enthusiasm and resiliency of members. Youth Challenge Contest included talented exhibitors who enjoyed friendly competition with the best young dairy showmen around. Strong spring dairy sales around the country evidenced the excitement for genetics and type, and high value being placed on cattle with a bright future.
A huge thank you to all of the members & volunteers who have assisted with events, and gave their time and efforts in support of our club. Thank you also to our allied industry sponsors for their continued support. The pages of this magazine showcase the excellence and diversity of Holstein genetics in our state, and the people behind the far-reaching success of our local Holstein industry. It is my pleasure to be involved in this organization and to be part of this ‘Holstein Family’. The key to what makes our industry and association special is the people involved. Their passion, family values, hard work and camaraderie exist no matter where you travel. Because of the black and white cow (and red & white and brown…), we have all been fortunate enough to make friendships near and far. I urge you to take time to be thankful for the health and ability to enjoy experiences, and be mindful of the impact you leave on those around you.
The California Holstein Association’s goal continues to be to advertise and promote Registered Holsteins to enthusiasts locally, around the country, and internationally. We aim to help members capitalize on the consistent added value Registered Holsteins provide in this always-
evolving industry. With this in mind, services are available to aid in advertising for sales and events- we invite you to inquire further. A new ‘Classified’ section is now available on the website also.
The future of our club is bright- as the California Junior Holstein Club encourages youth and develops skills for them to become leaders in the Holstein and agriculture fields. The programs we offer help shape these eager young people into confident, articulate ambassadors for the dairy community. From the responsibilities of raising show animals, to knowledge and competitiveness gained in dairy bowl and dairy jeopardy, poise in public speaking and networking at events, our junior members have the confidence and capacity to go far in whatever they pursue.
This magazine is available online year-round on our website www. caholstein.com and distributed throughout the year nationwide. Additional copies are available from the office upon request if you have an opportunity to share our publication with visitors. Thank you to the team at Cowsmopolitan as publishers and designers of this year’s premium magazine.
I invite each of you to take part in our various activities in the upcoming months, and I look forward to working with you all alongside our Board of Directors. We are especially excited to debut the ‘On Farm Challenge’ this fall and spotlight outstanding Holsteins in their home environments. Please don’t hesitate to contact me should you have any questions about our Association, or would like to get involved. Follow the California Holstein Association on Facebook, Instagram and the club website to stay current on events and updates- and in turn, feel free to share your Holstein news with us as well!
Best wishes for the year ahead,
Holstein Association USA Field Representative
In January, we welcomed the new Holstein Association USA CEO, Lindsey Worden. Lindsey stepped into her role on January 1, 2025, succeeding John Meyer as the 10th CEO of Holstein Association USA after his retirement on December 31, 2024. While Lindsey may be new to the role, she is no stranger to the Holstein Association.
During her 17-year tenure at Holstein USA, Lindsey has held several positions including college intern, Public Relations Specialist, Communications Manager, Executive Director of the Holstein Genetic Services Department, and most recently, Chief Operating Officer. We extend our heartfelt thanks John for his 23 years of outstanding leadership and service and look forward to watching how the Association continues to move forward under Lindsey’s leadership. Holstein Association USA is also gearing up for the 2025 National Holstein Convention, being held June 23-26 in St. Louis, Missouri. Bill Genasci, Holstein Association USA’s Region 9 Director from California, will be retiring from the Board of Directors after seven years. While on the Board, Bill served on the International Marketing Committee and the Audit Committee. We thank Bill for his dedicated service to Holstein Association USA and the Holstein cow.
Running for the Region 9 Director position are three Holstein Association USA members also from California. Thank you to Joey Airoso, Elisabeth Regusci, and David Weststeyn for their interest in representing California Holstein breeders, Holstein USA members, and our beloved black and white cow. Director elections will take place on Thursday, June 26 during Holstein Association USA’s 139th Annual Meeting.
Best of luck to the Juniors from California competing in the various contests held during the National Junior Holstein Convention. Not only do you represent us well, but the skills and friendships you are gaining through the experience will serve you well throughout your life.
If you’ve spent anytime around California show rings in the past several decades, you’ll recognize the winner of the 2025 CA Senior Breeder award, not only from hearing his name topping a class, but also for his love of the Holstein cow, his work ethic, and his competitive nature! Les Davis and his family owned and operated the Bella Rosa herd at Whitney Oaks Dairy, where they bred and developed numerous state and national show winners and a pile of EX cows.
The family love affair with showing heated up in the early 1990s when Les purchased a junior 2-year-old named Amsterdam Christen, a Walkway Chief Mark daughter bred in Montana. In 1993, following her Supreme Champion win at the California State Fair, she went on to stand 2nd in her class at Madison and was named the Reserve All-American Junior 3-Year-Old. Christen eventually scored EX94 and was exported to Brazil.
It was another Chief Mark daughter that brought a truckload of trophies home to Whitney Oaks Dairy in Riverdale - Zendi Van-Mark Ebony EX-96 2E. Ebony was a three-peat Grand Champion at the Western Fall National Show in 1996, 1997 & 1998, while making over 214,000 lbs of milk lifetime with a top record over 40,000 of milk in the midst of her show career. In many ways, she fulfilled Les’ philosophy of breeding: high-type, longlasting, high-producing cows that stood the test of time.
That philosophy resulted in two very high-scoring cows that carry the BellaRosa prefix:
Bella-Rosa Believabl Pamela EX-95, a cow that was Grand Champion at the Western Fall National Show and a fourtime All-California winner for Exels Holsteins.
Bella-Rosa G W Sara EX-96 3E was a farm favorite at Oakfield Corners Dairy in New York, and was twice nominated for All-American. Her Solomon daughter, Oakfield Solomon Sunset is also scored EX-96, and has been nominated for AllAmerican several times. Sara is out of an EX Linjet, then Beaumond Spendide Spirit EX-95, another hugely successful show cow for Les. Spendide was the All-American 4-Year-Old in 2003, and was a popular Reserve Grand Champion at World Dairy Expo that year.
A real milestone for the Davis herd was the classification day they had three cows put up for committee - quite a feat! Brookwaters Aero Edith, Beavervale Aeroline Elite, and Whitney Oaks Bistro 451 all were deemed worthy of a look at 95, with Aero Edith going on to carry that EX-95 score.
Les loved to take over a ‘project’ cow, and would wait for a cow to calve again while giving her the extra special care and time she needed. Those cows often rewarded him by blossoming under his attention and developing into the special kind.
Les also developed an appreciation for the Jersey breed while breeding or campaigning Ranora Juno Kelly EX-90, Ranora Juno Laramie EX-94, Rockledge Deluxe Clover EX-94, Bellavista Wrangler Lisha EX-93, and Whitney Oaks Keeper Beth. Several of these cows were resold to other breeders or to Canada, where they continued their successful careers.
Over the years, Les and Bonnie’s children, Michael, Maddy, and Melissa, also developed a love for exhibiting registered cattle, and were very successful showing the family’s Holsteins and Jerseys.
The tagline used in their ads was ‘where the search for quality never ends’, and that is a true testament to Les Davis’ life with purebred dairy cattle!

AJ Quist Memorial Young Breeder of the Year
The 2025 AJ Quist Memorial Young Breeder of the Year finds a fitting and enthusiastic honoree in Tony Garcia Jr. of Modesto, CA. Tony grew up in a family that has been involved in the dairy industry for more than 40 years, and he knew from a very young age that he wanted to be involved as well.
As a junior member, Tony developed his skill as a dairy cattle judge, and won numerous 4-H and FFA contests throughout the state and across the country, highlighted by his winning the 4-H judging contest at World Dairy Expo in 2012. He then went on to join the dairy judging team at Modesto Junior College, where he also had a successful run.
He retuned home to the family operation, the Tony & Fatima Garcia Dairy, where he now manages alongside his father, Tony. In addition to day-to-day responsibilities, he also oversees the embryo selection and transplants for the herd, which carries the Ilander prefix. Tony and his partners have invested in some prominent Holstein cow families, including Apple, Elegance, and Roxy families, and are utilizing those genetics in the herd. He has also been active in merchandising heifers from their ET program.
Tony has bred and developed numerous Very Good and Excellent cows, and also enjoys presenting those cattle in the show ring in California and beyond. A real highlight in his early show career was exhibiting Ilander Baxter Alice 315-ET EX-92 at the 2014 Western Spring National Holstein Show, where she was named Grand Champion of both the Open and Junior shows, and was Champion Bred & Owned cow of the show.

In 2023, Ms GW Atwood Desire EX-92, was tapped as the winning senior 3-year-old and Intermediate Champion at the California State Holstein Show, and she repeated those same accomplishments at the Western Spring National Show in Richmond, UT. That fall, Desire was exhibited at the International Junior Holstein Show at World Dairy Expo and was named Reserve Intermediate Champion, securing her Junior All-American title for the year. At that same CA State Show, the Garcia-bred Ilander Drmn Leanne 7044-ET EX-92 was the Intermediate Champion of the Junior Show for the Kasbergen & Fernandes kids. Her maternal sister, Ilander Unix Leann 6324 EX-91, was the high seller at the 2022 Amplify Sale and later named Intermediate & HM Grand Champion at the CA State Show for Vierra, T&L Cattle & Daniel Van de Pol. Illander Unst TequilaRed-ET, Unstopabull x VG-85 Altitude x EX-96 Tequila, was the Reserve All-California R&W Winter Calf for Hilmar Holsteins.
In addition to his work on the cow dairy, Tony owns and operates Paradise Goat Dairy, along with his wife Kayli and 2-year-old son, TJ. What began with the purchase of one goat in 2013, turned into 75, and now they milk 2000 goats in their operation. He uses artificial insemination prominently in the herd, which is less common in goat dairies, but prefers the more rapid genetic improvement and biosecurity that AI provides compared to using bucks.
Ilander Unix Leann 6324 (EX-91) was the high seller at the 2022 Amplify Sale and later was named Intermediate & HM Grand Champion at the CA State Show for her new owners.

CALIFORNIA DAIRY YOUTH CHALLENGE
The 3rd Annual Youth Challenge was held during the CA State Holstein Show and Spring Jersey Show! Designed to recognize young dairy enthusiasts in their work with showing cattle, encourage participation and promote friendly competition, while improving skills and knowledge. A big THANK YOU to Kirby Manufacturing for sponsoring the prizes for this year’s contest. This contest was open to all youth ages 9-21 and consisted of four equally weighted portions:
· A Dairy Judging Contest of 4 classes utilizing the tremendous quality cattle on the grounds for the show tested juniors’ type analysis skills
· A written exam covering practical husbandry knowledge and questions sourced from the Holstein Foundation workbook series
· Showmanship placing
New in 2024, an interview portion was added. Youth met with an industry professional at their cattle to present and describe their project. The fitting contest was revamped to a “bring your own calf’ format to allow more diverse participation. This was an optional part of the Youth Challenge. These positive changes were sparked by Junior club discussion and leadership on the officer team.

Junior Presidents’ Message
Hello my name is Lauren Silveira and I am happy to be serving as your 2025-26 California Junior Holstein Association Co-President along with Chloe Chapman. I am 17 years old and a 3rd generation dairy farmer from Chowchilla. I am currently a Junior at Chowchilla Union High School. My involvement with the Holstein cow has provided many opportunities. I have learned responsibility, hard work, determination, and compassion through taking care of my animals. As a member of the California Junior Holstein Association for the past 9 years I have expanded my leadership capabilities, knowledge in dairy bowl, improved study & research skills, and practiced public speaking. In attending Holstein association events, I have had the chance to meet and build friendships with other youth, as well as interact with industry professionals and Holstein breeders. Showing cattle has allowed me to be an ambassador for production agriculture in communicating with the public and educating consumers. I continually strive to build my herd and develop high end genetics.
I would like to personally extend an invitation to all of our current (and prospective!) CA Junior Holstein members to participate in the various activities offered throughout the year. There are many ways to get involved and have fun. I encourage you to try out something new, bring a friend, and make some new connections! You can recruit new members from your local community, 4-H and FFA.
· The annual Junior Planning Conference happens in November and serves as an opportunity to discuss and develop future activities in addition to enjoying games and camaraderie.
· The State Convention offers a wide variety of contests and workshops. Please check out pages 51-55 featuring 2025 results to get a glimpse of what is available. Involvement on the state level can earn you the chance to compete at the National Holstein Convention contests.
· The State Holstein Show is held in April (May this year) and showcases youth exhibitors. The Youth Challenge Contest was established in 2022 and now offers five components- showmanship, knowledge exam, judging contest, interview and fitting contests. The 2025 State Junior Show had over 60 exhibitors.
· Junior Holstein Show Contest is a state version of ‘All-Americans’ recognizing animals shown successfully throughout the year.
Please reach out to one of us, a CJHA officer from your area, or one of the Junior Advisors to inquire about programs and learn more! Our officer team is looking forward to engaging with membership more on social media platforms in the coming year. A new Instagram page has been developed @cajrholsteinassociation. Best of luck to our members who are representing CA at the National Holstein Convention in St. Louis, Missouri

YOUNG BREEDER OF THE FUTURE BOY
Henry Blagg, 12, is this year’s Breeder of the Future Boy. Hailing from Lodi, his family raises replacement dairy heifers, which is how he became involved in the industry. He has participated at the Junior Holstein Convention in dairy jeopardy, dairy bowl, and other junior events. He will also serve as a CJHA officer this year.

He has been High Individual at numerous judging contests around the state as well.
Henry is responsible for feeding and care of his dairy heifer projects and enjoys helping at Exel’s Holsteins, where he purchases his replacements heifers from. He is also active in the Tokay Colony 4-H Club and is an office and helps with community service projects.
“My goal is to breed and develop Holsteins that have show ring type, are profitable on a daily basis, and are marketable to fellow enthusiasts. I always strive to do my best, have a competitive spirit, and encourage others to achieve also. In attending events such as conventions and State Show, I have taken advantage of opportunities to network with peers and breeders. I enjoy meeting new people and gaining knowledge about possibilities for my future in agriculture,” Chloe stated.
Chloe has exhibited cattle at the local, state and national level with much success. She also participates in Showmanship, placing 1st at the 2023 Stanislaus County Fair and 2nd at the CA State Show in 2022. She also participates in Dairy Judging locally.
The foundation of her herd, JS Fairholm Moovin Wildcard, was purchased in 2021 and is now scored EX-93 and has several daughters that Chloe and her siblings have shown. Most of her other animals have come from her family’s dairy, Gil-Tex Holsteins, in which she receives heifers to show for her work on the farm.
Chloe also plays softball and was an All-Academic Varsity Athlete in 2024. She is active in FFA, receiving her Chapter Degree in 2024.

Phyllis is survived by her children, Georgette Anderson (Jim), Donna Morasci, Janet Houser (Chuck), Diane Borba (Frank), Carol Borba (Frank), Mona Nancett (Michael), and George Morasci (Kelly); her 11 grandchildren, her 22 great-grandchildren, and her sole greatgreat-grandchild.
Born in Montebello, CA, Phyllis moved with her parents and siblings to the Turlock-Hilmar area at a young age and graduated from Hilmar High School. She later moved to Modesto after marrying her husband George on August 24, 1944. Together, Phyllis and George started their life together on their dairy. In 1949, they began welcoming their six daughters and their one son. As they worked on creating a family, Phyllis and George also registered their business under the title of Westport Holsteins. Unfortunately, Phyllis and her children lost George in 1974, and the matriarch took on the role of raising her children alone while managing a business. After years of hard work, Phyllis enjoyed retired life by indulging in her numerous hobbies from dancing to crocheting to cooking. Additionally, another of Phyllis’s favorite ways to spend time involved traveling, specifically to casinos like Black Oak. However, her best moments and memories were
made when she spent time with her children and their evergrowing families. She was loved and treasured by all who knew her and likewise. May she rest in eternal glory and peace.
GILBERT ROBERT TEIXEIRA
Gilbert Robert Teixeira, 73, passed away on Friday, May 23, 2025, with his family by his side. Gilbert was born on June 3, 1951, in Tracy, California to George and Rose Teixeira. By 1953, they moved to Newman, California where he resided for the years to come. Gilberts love for the Holstein cow began at a very young age working alongside his mother and father on the family farm. At the age of 8, the family dairy was sold. Without a farm to house his animals, he would milk and feed for neighbors in exchange for housing his growing herd. He was very active in 4-H and FFA showing at many local and county fairs with his registered animals and was a member of the Orestimba Football Team throughout his school days, graduating from Orestimba High in 1969.
His herd grew and Gil-Tex Holsteins was established. He went into partnership for 5 years, which then dissolved in 1977 when Gilbert moved to Modesto to start his own dairy. It was shortly after at the Merced County Fair where Gilbert met his future wife, Linda Giannone of Los Banos. The two got married on September 27, 1980, and were soon off on their honeymoon to Madison, Wisconsin for the World Dairy Expo. This was Gil’s first trip and certainly not his last, attending the World Dairy Expo for 40+ years.
In May 1981, Gil and Linda moved to Turlock, where the real roots of Gil-Tex Holsteins were planted and still remain. In September 1983 they welcomed their first child, Robert, with their daughter Lindsey born in April 1985.
Gil’s journey with the black and white cow was a successful one with outstanding accomplishments inside and outside of the show ring. His career took a huge leap on December 1, 1984, when he purchased Queen-N-Rosa Line G V Tidy. This cow was by far the single most influential cow that has ever called GilTex Holsteins home. Gilbert dedicated his time and knowledge to the registered associations on local and state levels for 40+ years with the Stanislaus and Merced County Holstein Clubs, as well as the California Holstein Association, holding officer positions, including President for multiple years. Driven by hard work and a passion for the Holstein cow, Gilbert built a herd of 1,400 Holsteins from the single calf purchased as a 9-year-old boy. Throughout the years he has bred or developed over 200 excellent scored cows, seven EX-95 or EX-96 cows (one of the most west of the Mississippi), and had 6 Grand Champions at the California State Holstein Show, which is the second most of all time. With the success in the show ring and being an excellent cow man, Gilbert had the opportunity to judge Holstein shows throughout the United States at the local, state, and national levels, as well as international in Canada, Brazil, and Portugal. He was widely recognized as one of the best at reading cow
pedigrees at purebred sales across California and served as a mentor not only to his own children but also to countless 4-H and FFA students.
In 1977, Gilbert won the A.J. Quist Young Breeder Award, one of the youngest individuals ever to receive it. In 1998 he won the coveted Al Hay Award, and in 2005 the California Holstein Senior Breeder Award. In 2014 he joined the most exclusive club in American Dairy, receiving the highest recognition given to a dairy cattle showman in the United States, and was recognized as the 73rd winner of the Arthur B. Klussendorf award at the World Dairy Expo.
Gilbert was an example that with determination, hard work, and passion you can achieve greatness. He was a true legend in the dairy industry, leaving lasting impacts on so many, and built long lasting cherished friendships along the way. But the biggest legacy he leaves behind is the one he built with his family. Gilbert and Linda created a life of a true family owned and operated dairy. Up until the last days, you could find the whole family working alongside Gil at Gil-Tex Holsteins. Gilbert Teixeira, a name forever engraved on some of the most prestigious awards but etched on the hearts of all who knew him.
Gilbert is preceded in death by his parents, George and Rose Teixeira and brother, Norman Teixeira. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Linda; his brother Don (Brenda) Teixeira; son, Robert (Kate) Teixeira; daughter, Lindsey (Tom) Nunes; and 5 grandchildren, his pride and joy, Jon and Chloe Chapman, Alexis and Nichole Teixeira, and Manuel Nunes.
