Fueled by an abiding passion for classic rhythm & blues, Brandy Moore & the Nightcaps have enjoyed playing to wildly enthusiastic audiences throughout Southern Vancouver Island at private events, clubs and concerts since the band first formed in early 2018. A singer/songwriter and song interpreter with over 25 years of performing experience, Moore has appeared in Europe, Latin America, the United States and Canada.

On her latest CD Real Good Love, she is backed by a stellar cast of Nashville players including multiple Grammy winner Phil Kenzie and Bonnie Raitt’s long time guitarist George Marinelli. Moore’s

exceptionally warm voice and heartfelt delivery of both classic and original material draws comparisons to Bonnie Raitt, Eva Cassidy and Etta James. Sharing lead vocal duties with Moore is lead guitarist and singer Victor Wells who along with a dream team rhythm section anchored by drummer Jon Miller make up Brandy’s back up band the Nightcaps.

ow in their eighth season at the Gem, the Shawnigan Players have prepared two of Shakespeare’s famous romantic comedies – one light, one dark.

This year’s festival features the hilariously heartwarming Much Ado About Nothing, directed by Kimberley Phillips, and the complex, provocative Measure for Measure, directed by Alex Gallacher, both at the Gem o’ the Isle Farm in Cowichan Station, 2465 Koksilah Rd. The first event of this kind at the Gem was in 2012 and it was not a Shakespeare play, but “Pride and Prejudice”. Alex Gallacher, who is a long-time member of the Shawnigan Players, but also the headmaster of the Cobble Hill Evergreen school, knew the family Verduin, who own the Gem, because their children went to school there. He saw the place, loved it and the idea to put on an outdoor play in the summer was born.

It was met with great success, so a year later another play was presented, Shakespeare this time. Audiences loved it, so a couple of years later it developed into the 2-play Shakespeare festival as we know it today. Nestled between apple trees and framed by horse pastures, the Players’

“stage under the stars” offers an enchanting rural setting for Shakespeare’s timeless stories.

Much Ado About Nothing is one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies, beloved for its fast-paced, razor-sharp banter and quick-witted, strong-willed characters. Rivals become lovers and lovers are undone by rivals in a lively battle of wits and wills! Director Kimberley Phillips (last year’s Trinculo in The Tempest) offers a comedic tour-de-force with this classic crowd-pleaser.

How To Make Iced Tea

S

ummer is here and it is time to start enjoying iced tea.

Did you know that all the teas in your cupboard would make great iced tea? Preparing loose tea to be enjoyed cold is very easy and offers the benefit of better health the better the quality of your tea.

Here are several simple steps to make iced tea for yourself, family and friends.

HOT BREWING Prepare hot tea using 3g (1.5 teaspoon) per cup (234ml) of cold water. Allow to cool to room temp and then refrigerate to serve later.

Another option is to brew hot and serve over plenty of ice right away. This ‘pour-over’ method requires twice the amount of loose tea.

COLD BREWING The other method of preparation is cold brewing.

With this method, the cold water draws out, or pulls the flavour from the leaf as opposed to hot water, used in traditional brewing, which pushes the flavour from the leaf. Subsequently, cold infusion is a much slower, gentle method that results in a smooth, more subtle, naturally sweet tasting tea.

To prepare a cold infusion you will need; • A clean glass jar or pitcher.

• Add loose tea (about 1.5 times the amount you would normally use).

• Add cold water and cover with lid.

• Let it sit in the fridge for four to ten hours, depending on the type (less time for white teas, green teas and wiry/flat oolongs, more time for rolled oolongs and longest for puerhs, herbal infusions and black teas).

A great tip for preparing large amounts of iced tea is to make ice cubes with the tea. It allows for keeping the tea chilled without diluting the flavour.

A word of caution - brewed tea has a shelf life! Not only can bacteria begin to form but time and exposure diminish the health benefits. For best results, adhere to the following: Tea stored at room temperature should be kept no longer than 2 days.

Tea stored in the refrigerator should be kept no longer than 3 days.

Method

Rinse or drain blueberries. Combine 10 oz of sugar with gelatin.

Dissolve in boiling water. Cool slightly and stir in lemon rind, juice, almond syrup and rum. Refrigerate mixture until partially thickened.

Beat egg whiles until soft peaks, gradually add remaining 6 oz of sugar and continue beating until thick and glossy. Whip thickened gelatin mixture until fluffy and increased volume. Fold whipped egg whites and cream into gelatin mixture. Gently fold well drained blueberries into mousse.

Portion: 12 oz blueberry Mousse into each of the 12 serving dishes .

Refrigerate until chilled. Serve with garnish of whipped cream, whole berries and a lemon twist!

’s August, and the streaming west coast sunshine has transformed the landscape into an oasis of fruit-laden trees. Cherries, plums, apples, pears and peaches – the variety and abundance has created an explosion of food processors to be established in the Valley and cider-makers delight in creating home-grown vintages.

Even so, each season, thousands of pounds of ripe fruit fall to the ground only to rot in the summer sun. Tree-

owners are often too busy to deal with their trees, or can no longer keep up with the demands of caring for, harvesting and processing an abundance of produce year after year.

However, Cowichan Green Community’s (CGC) FruitSave program continues to step up to rescue fruit that would otherwise go to waste, and ensure it gets redistributed throughout the community. This gleaning program organizes and connects volunteer pickers with fruit tree owners whose trees produce an overwhelming yield. The gleaned fruit is shared between the pickers, the tree owners, and emergency food service providers.

Additionally, the gleaned fruit is donated to local canning workshops and food skills programs that aim to teach the community about the importance of healthy food. At CGC, the reFRESH Cowichan team will be contributing to

handling the excess produce and processing the fruit into value-added products for redistribution to those in need.

With the collaboration of reFRESH Cowichan Team and the promising fruit season ahead, FruitSave is looking for fruit trees and volunteers to help our program achieve its full potential in reaching as many community members as possible. FruitSave volunteers make connections with the community, share in local food, and spend time outdoors in our beautiful valley.

Visions Art Group in Cowichan Bay On the mezzanine floor of the Maritime Centre in Cowichan Bay a group of artists, all members of the Visions Art Studio Tour Society, are presenting a three-week show and sale from to August 18 from 10 am to 5 pm each day.

that Duncan has one of the best Farmer’s Markets I have ever attended in this province.

As a small town we are lucky to have such a big market, and one that goes year-round! But August is when the market truly shines in terms of the abundance of farm fresh food. This is the time of year to think about freezing and preserving some of the season’s harvest, or just making the most of the wide range fruits and vegetables that are available in our region at this time of year.

What’s in a Name?

When folks hear the name Cow-op, they often think of a cow-share or animal farm business and they aren’t far off. The name for Cowichan’s only non-profit farmer and processor co-operative was derived from a combination of co-operative and Cowichan, the beautiful place we call home.

The Cowichan Valley Co-operative Marketplace (CVCM) is a non-profit community service co-op whose purpose is to “increase food security, access to healthy local foods, and farm viability on Vancouver Island.” At present, our primary mode of fulfilling this mission is through an on-line marketplace called Cow-op, which sells locally grown and locally processed food products.

What Makes The Islands In The Salish Sea So Special?

estled in the Strait of Georgia (also known as the Salish Sea) between Vancouver Island and the mainland, the Gulf Islands are a special place to visit. Being one of the most beautiful and accessible archipelagos in the world, they are home to an array and variety of wildlife with each individual island or bay having an interesting historical story to tell.

Over 5,000 years ago the Coast Salish called these islands their home, long before the European explorers arrived. There are still remaining middens, petroglyphs and relics dotted around this area. The names of many of the islands, bays, harbours and waterways often hold a connection with a Spanish or English explorer who arrived in this area in the 18th century.

In the mid 1850’s when gold was discovered on Mayne Island, people travelled from Vancouver & the US to seek for the promised gold. Prized fruit orchards was developed on Salt spring by settlers from

Australia, Britain & African Americans escaping slavery in the US. In 2003, part of the southern Gulf Islands was recognized as a national park, the sixth smallest in Canada. It covers 36 square kilometres of area on 16 islands with more than 30 islets, reefs & surrounding waters. We are fortunate that our paddling centre in Sidney is the gateway to the Gulf Islands National park Reserve. Paddling distances are short, scenery is varied, and, despite the close proximity, civilization seems worlds away. I have highlighted some interesting

historical facts about the islands we frequently paddle to from Sidney and Mill Bay. Sidney Island was initially used for clam harvesting by First Nation people, before being subjected to a failed residential subdivision by the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1860. Between 1906 and 1915 clay was extracted for a brickwork, logging of old growth trees, and the introduction of nonnative animals like deer and peacocks from farming operations and its use as a private hunting ground before the province used the area in the late-1950s to test the concept of a marine park.

D’Arcy Island still has the ruins of old buildings, along with a memorial plaque to remind us of its time as a leper colony, between 1891 and 1924. It was also used by a famous bootlegger, Roy Olmstead to smuggle Canadian liquor, primarily whiskey to Washington state.

Isle-de-Lis, formerly known as Rum Island was used by rum-runners during the prohibition period in the United States, being less than one mile from the international border. Isle-deLis was a private island until 1978 when it was bequeathed to the province for park purposes and renamed to Islede-Lis. Portland Island and the neighbouring Brackman Island was an ecological reserve prior to its inclusion into the national park as a Special Preservation Area.

Archaeological sites in the form of midden deposits remain on Portland Island from a long-abandoned First Nations village. Similarly, evidence remains of its use as a private island, including agricultural development and logging, though it reverted to the provincial government after the owner’s bankruptcy in the Great Depression. The island was given to Princess Margaret to commemorate her 1958 visit to British Columbia and she donated it back to the province for park purposes.

Russell Island is a foreshore

clam garden developed by First Nations people and the Mahoi House developed when Russell Island was a private island owned by a Native Hawaiian family between 1886 and 1959 (and also inhabited by subsequent owner). It remained a private island until 1997 when it was purchased in the Pacific Marine Heritage Legacy program for park purposes.

The wildlife that inhabits these wonderful Islands and its water ways can be spectacular and varied; Eagles and seabirds swirl in the skies above the Salish Sea, sheltered, islet-dotted waters teeming with seals, otters, orcas and pods of porpoises. The Gulf Islands are laced with trails leading to mountaintop viewpoints, lighthouses, and reminders of First Nations and pioneer pasts, while their shores and lagoons are a haven for thriving bird life, at low tide the inter-tidal life is truly amazing.

Let’s all make sure everyone’s visit is enjoyable; here are a few tips to remember….

Cowichan wineries are small family run enterprises. Everyone puts their heart and soul into

what they produce so keep in mind that you may be talking to the owner or winemaker during your visit and please remember to be polite and respectful.

Each person’s palate is different. Please keep your reactions in check when tasting wine. The great thing about wine is that there are so many to choose from! If you don’t wish to drink all your wine please feel free to put the excess in the receptacle at the bar or perhaps your companion might like to help you with it!

No fragrances please. There is a strong relationship between smell and taste. Cologne, perfume, hairspray and even cigarettes can ruin the tasting experience.

Use your inside voice. We want everyone to have fun, ask questions and enjoy themselves.

But remember that your neighbor is trying to do the same thing.

Please be respectful to others in the tasting room.

Don’t forget to eat and hydrate. It doesn’t take long, going from winery to winery, before you will feel the effects of alcohol. Eat beforehand or take a break for a snack. Drinking water in between wines helps you to stay hydrated as well.

Intoxicated guests are not acceptable. Please stop wine touring if you have had too much to drink. It is illegal for any winery to pour samples to someone that is intoxicated.

And most important….

Designate a driver. There are also a few local tour companies that can drive you around the valley, then everyone can enjoy the experience!

2018 Allegro Winemaker: Dan Wright A blend of novel varieties, Sauvignette and Petit Milo fermented in a stainless steel and reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc with both tropical and grassy notes. Full malolactic conversion and lees stirring gives a softer texture while retaining vibrancy. Tasting: Pronounced honey, apple, and ripe peach with animated citrus and pineapple. Nice balance, medium-body and a rich finish.$25

Venturi-Schulze

Brut Naturel Rosé 2017 Winemaker: Giordano Venturi This fine 100% estate-grown delicious, traditional-method sparkling rosé is a family favourite.

We created it from our Zweigelt grapes (the most widely grown red variety of Austria) without the use of pesticides or herbicides. It is completely dry and natural, has a pale pink hue and delicate berry flavours, is crisp and lively and pairs wonderfully with a wide range of foods. After the bottle fermentation, it was left en tirage and is being disgorged by hand in small batches.

Cherry Point Estate Wines

2017 Gewürztraminer Winemaker: Bela Varga This Germanic style wine is true to its origins, with characteristic aromas that are both fragrant and luscious with fruit. Peach and lychee dominate; flavours which are indicative of the Cowichan Valley. Gewürztraminer is a well balanced white wine that pairs with sushi, soft cheeses and delicate seafood.

Gewurztraminer can be challenging in this weather, some vintages are not too abundant, other years the fruit has beautiful characters and develops its fragrant and fruity notes. $29

It’s like drinking Summer in a glass and goes with everything.” This Rosé is made from 100% Cowichan Valley Gamay Noir, which boasts aromas and flavours of wild forest strawberries. Pairs perfectly with grilled fish, chicken or pizza. $22

Joue White Field Blend Winemaker: Brent Rowland

In my first harvest at Averill Creek, the 2018 Joue White is an initial, playful take on the site and the white varietals from the estate. The varietals were picked on the same date, processed and vinified separately but treated the exact same. Picked into half-ton bins, the grapes were foot-stomped, left in the bins overnight and then whole-bunch pressed the next day into older French Barriques.

There they fermented until dry and were left on primary lees until just before bottling.

Nothing has been added to this wine: No yeast, enzymes, nutrients or sulphur, the idea being that we are creating a segue from the vineyard to the glass. $25

Busnardo Vineyard Manzoni Red Winemaker: Joseph Busnardo “This is a red wine that is for everyone. If people don’t like this wine, they don’t like wine at all.” Manzoni is a Northern Italian grape imported to Canada (by Busnardo) over 50 years ago. The Manzoni white is equally fabulous. The vines are grown at the original Divino location in Oliver and here in Cobble Hill only.

This red wine can be served room temperature, cellar temperature or chilled! Great with aperitifs, with a meal or on it’s own. This makes for a versatile wine and it is blessed with a nice smooth finish $18

Robin’s Rose 2018 Winemaker: Mark Holford Just released. This is the winemaker’s special release because he and his assistant winemaker – the rose’s namesake - have both had a hand in preparing this bottle to market and it is just being released. Robin’s Rose is named after our daughter Robin who has finished her degree in Oenology at Brock University in St. Catherines. She will also have a “hand” in starting the fall harvest next vintage before she goes off for 5 years to work abroad doing northern and southern harvests. This vintage release was collaborated together and has some Gamay noir in it, based on her suggestion. Two generations made this wine..$22

2017 Pinot Noir Winemaker: Mike Nierychlo “Pinot Noir is the flagship variety of our beautiful Cowichan Valley. Cowichan meaning, “The Warm Land” is literally the perfect climate for this grape to ripen elegantly, slowly and evenly giving us a delicious, honest and unique expression of our incredible terroir.” Our 2017 Pinot Noir is delicate, feminine and lovely. Layer upon layer of complex flavours are followed buy a silky texture. Wild flowers, apples, red fruit, sweet minerality, and a lively juiciness only just begin to describe this wine. $45

Zanatta Winery

Taglio Rosso Brut Winemaker: Jim Moody The sparkler we rarely hear much about because of a hoarding tendency is Taglio Rosso Brut.

There is a good reason the Zanatta family and staff quietly try to horde this wine. This is a unique red sparkling wine made in the traditional method. We use a blend (“taglio” in Italian) of Cabernet Sauvignon and Castel grapes and it is finished on the dryer side of off-dry. 2017 was a warm summer and sunny harvest which contributed to the full fruit flavour of Taglio Rosso. We are gradually increasing production of this jewel so we can start letting the word out beyond our tasting room. Although it is still only available in our tasting room and restaurant it is well worth the trek to the winery! $31.30

Paella is an event that takes place on Sundays or during the holidays. Families get together and plan their Paella days in advance. Paella is directed by the elderly.

Usually the grandfather gives the orders and instructs each participant as to what and where to obtain each of the ingredients. The grandfather will be the Paella Captain and only he will indicate each person involved exactly how to make the cuts and when to incorporate each element into the Paella. It is almost alchemy, where olive oil, garlic, colourful peppers and onions begin to blend before chorizo, chicken, pork and rabbit, if available, are added, producing a limitless sea of aromas in crescendo enhanced by the consumption of good Rioja wines. Eventually it begins to take the right consistency and good Valencia rice is added.

The night before, a stock has been brewing using cuttings from all vegetables and shells from the shell fish that is to be added

once the rice is al-dente. By now the entire house is full of aromas, aromas that fly in the neighbourhood. Everybody knows paella is in the making and they know they are welcome to join.

Ingredients Serves 4 1 lb fresh linguine (home made preferred, but store bought is fine too) 1 tbsp olive oil 3 tbsp butter 4 shallots, diced 4 cloves garlic, diced ½ kg spot prawns or side stripe prawns (shells removed) ½ kg scallops ½ kg halibut (cut into 1 inch cubes) ½ tsp hot pepper flakes, or half a serrano pepper diced 1 cup dry white wine (Pinot Gris) 1 cup chicken broth ½ lemon juiced and zested ¼ cup parsley (fresh) diced Salt and pepper (to taste)

ummers on the Island are pretty amazing. We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, and there are so many amazing activities to do here during the summer.

One of my favourite guilty pleasures is fishing. Partly because I love to fish, and partly because I love to eat fish!

From spot prawns in spring, to halibut, lingcod and salmon in the summer the abundance of seafood here is truly exceptional.

Bay the past couple of years for some amazing fishing up on the west coast of the Island. Truly a unique experience being out on the water in some of the most beautiful fishing locations anywhere in the world.

Luckily the wines we make here on Vancouver Island tend to pair beautifully with our local seafood. Oysters with sparkling minuet, spot prawns in a white wine marinade, fish tacos (halibut) cooked in white wine, bouillabaisse made with as many local seafoods as you can findall made and paired with great local wines.

It’s interesting that in many wine regions the local wines just pair so well with foods that are also found locally. There’s a compatibility between the

Add shallots, garlic and hot peppers (flakes) and sauté for 5 minutes until shallots become translucent.

Add fish, scallops and prawns and cook for 2 – 3 minutes.

Add wine, bring to boil. Pour in broth. Cook together for about 5 minutes, remove the seafood into separate bowl. Continue to boil the liquid for another 5 – 7 minutes until broth and wine reduce by about half.

While the broth is reducing put the linguine into the boiling salted water and cooked until al dente (as specified on the package) Recombine the seafood, broth and stir in parsley, lemon zest and lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper and combine with linguine.

Red Wine Gin Sour (adapted from the Tasting Rome cookbook) 1 1/2 oz Ampersand Gin 1 1/2 oz Elderflower syrup (check the Duncan Farmer’s market or use equal parts simple syrup and Elderflower Liqueur) ¾ oz fresh squeezed lemon juice 1 pastuerized egg white ¾ oz red wine Add gin, elderflower, lemon juice and egg in a cocktail shaker. Dry shake. Add ice to shaker and shake again. Strain into a tall glass over ice. Pour red wine over the back of a bar spoon over the centre of the glass. The wine will fall below the foamy egg white giving a layered effect. Serve & enjoy!

’s universally acknowledged that the French know a thing or two about good food and wine. They’ve been making an art of wine for two centuries, and every day the French consume more than 30 million baguettes.

There is no definitive history of the baguette, but our favourite theory links the origin of modern French bread to the French revolution. While the monarchy and upper classes feasted on fine loaves, the lack of quality bread among the general population was one of the driving forces of the uprising. In 1793, the post-revolution government made a law stating: “Richness and poverty must both disappear from the government of equality. It will no longer make a bread of wheat for the rich and a bread of bran for the poor. All bakers will be held, under the penalty of imprisonment, to make only one type of bread: The Bread of Equality.”

The shape of the baguette is said to have emerged in the 1920s, when a new law made it illegal for anyone to begin work between 10pm and 4am.

As this didn’t leave enough time for bakers to prepare larger loaves before the morning rush, the baguette’s long, slim form would bake faster and be ready in time for their customers’ breakfasts.

am often asked; “Why are you so passionate about wine?”

My response is likely not what you would expect. Yes, wine is this incredible art form with an endless number of variables that could only be grasped through living countless lifetimes, but what is the point of an incredible art form it it is isn’t shared. The reason that I am so passionate about wine is my love for people and sharing a glass together with the ones you love.

Almost 10 years ago, as it is said, I caught the wine bug and began making wine in my garage. I didn’t begin this journey alone, my brother-in-law (also named Mike) was right there beside me in the ice-cold garage as we crushed vintage after vintage with our feet. I would love to tell you more about the wine adventures of Mike & Mike but you’ll just have to come by the winery and ask. I’ve never made wine from a kit, instead my winemaking experience grew through sourcing grapes from premium wine growers, studying every bit of wine literature that I could get my hands on and

Very quickly my palate became fascinated with wines that tasted more like somewhere instead of something. I also noticed that these wines had an indescribably clean texture and drinkability about them. I once heard it said that great wine isn’t hard to drink, instead great wine is a pleasure to enjoy. We’ve all heard of wines described as cherry, or peppery, or oaky, or apples or fruity, but the wines that caught my attention were wines that you couldn’t describe with simple flavors and aromas.

Instead, they confidently shared a distinct sense of place with every sniff and sip. These wines began to make me wonder, what am I tasting, and why does it taste so different from so many other wines? I soon discovered that these wines, the wines that told a story, all shared something in common. They all have a genuine relationship with the land that they came from. How is this relationship between the land and grape captured so well into the bottle? This is where it gets interesting.

With much trial and error wine has been made for thousands of years around the world and through conversations with winemakers who either learned their craft through generations or winemakers who learned through their own trial and error, one underlying philosophy became evident to me. Old world and low intervention technique was the key to achieve greatness in your wine.

With old world philosophy and our core belief that nature was created long before we came along, the philosophy behind the wines of Emandare was born.

It all starts with the farm, I truly believe that wine is not made, wine is grown. Being blessed with this beautiful piece of land in the Cowichan Valley, it has become our responsibility to steward it to the best of our ability. For that we look to the old world. They all farmed

organically, not for marketing or because it was trendy, but simply because that was how they farmed. Not against nature, but working alongside nature. It is our goal through bio-diverse and sustainable farming practices like dry farming, composting, mulching and future animal husbandry such as chickens, sheep and bee keeping, to breathe abundant new life into our land. The beautiful byproduct of farming this way will be a healthy balanced vineyard.

I am a firm believer in the word Terroir, a French word that can be translated to sense of place. This is where our low intervention winemaking practices come in. My goal in the winery is to allow our wines to capture a glimpse of Emandare in every bottle. I believe that this can be achieved through what has been coined as natural wine making practices, which has been defined as; nothing added and nothing taken away. Though we love the ideology of natural wine, we do responsibly use tools such as filtering our whites and My wife Robin and I are still in organic amounts of sulphite. the early stages of our journey At Emandare we have nothing together into the wine world and to hide. Locally Made Wine And Chocolates – A Match Made In Cowichan

F

ine chocolate pairs well with so many liquid refreshments besides espresso coffee. In the past, we’ve had great fun looking into this by pairing our chocolate with local beer from Cowichan’s Small Block Brewery. This month, and in light of the upcoming Cowichan Valley Wine Festival, we decided to research what many of you have been asking us: “What locally made wines pair well with Chocolate Pearl’s locally made chocolates?” With so many great local wines and an equally broad assortment of our chocolates, it required lengthy sampling sessions.

Sip… nibble… make notes.

We know what you’re thinking and yes, it was a grueling task, but these are the lengths we go to keep you informed. In all, we sampled wines from eight local

wineries and paired them with a variety of our handmade chocolates. Full disclosure: we don’t pretend to be wine experts! Obviously, bridging wine and chocolate flavours is very much a subjective thing, so what follows isn’t meant to be a definitive guide or what wine experts might necessarily recommend – it is merely our opinion as chocolatiers. So, by all means, experiment yourselves. As research projects go, it’s one that you and your friends will surely relish. Included in this 28

chart, and in no particular order are our suggested pairings of Chocolate Pearl Chocolates with local wines.

Summer Sangria

Recipe courtesy Grant Easterbrook, The Olive Station, 225 Canada Avenue Downtown Duncan Ingredients 2 oranges 2 peaches 1 bottle local Pinot Noir 1/2 Cup rum 2 Cups soda water 1 handful local blackberries 1/4 Cup Grapefruit White Balsamic Vinegar

Directions

1. Slice the oranges into rounds and the peaches into wedges. Spread all the fruit in the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish.

2. Drizzle the fruit with the balsamic and rum. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and allow the fruit to soak for at least one hour, or up to overnight.

3. Just before serving, pour the fruit and any juices into a large pitcher. Fill the pitcher with wine and stir well.

4. Serve in glasses with ice cubes, and a splash of soda water. This sangria is best enjoyed the day it’s made.

The Truth About Skin Care Products Dr. Lyn Pascoe Viva Medical Aesthetics

W

e have all done it…stood in front of the ‘lotions and potions’ counter at various retail outlets (and now online stores) and tried to choose from the myriad of face creams available. We have also stockpiled products in our bathroom cupboards that ‘didn’t work’ or were too harsh.

In 2018, it is estimated that over $200 billion was spent globally on skin care products. I would like to demystify the lotion and potion purchasing process so that you don’t waste any of your money on products that don’t work well.

Make sure that your cleanser is PH balanced and suitable for your skin type. If in doubt, always choose a gentle product. I see a lot of damage from harsh scrubs.

Moisturizers alone will not treat wrinkles and fine line. At best, they will hydrate your skin. As you age, levels of Hyaluronic acid (which binds water) and ceramides (which contribute to the waxy lipids in the top layer) diminish and leave your skin vulnerable to damage.

Some moisturizers contain these products and they can be beneficial for hydration.

“I use a moisturizer that contains an SPF 15. Is that enough?”

SPF is a relative measure of how long a sunscreen will protect you from UVB (burning) rays. SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays, SPF blocks 97%, and 50 blocks 98%.

The difference between 30 and 50 is a mere 1%. You should choose a sunscreen with SPF 30 to 50 and use it every day including during the winter. Sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours.

2. Ward off / reduce the lines and pigment that didn’t seem to be there 5 years ago

To protect against UVA (ageing) rays, the product should contain Zinc Oxide 10 - 15%. Zinc will also block UVB rays. My preference is to use a pure Zinc-containing cream in the morning and a Zinc powder in the afternoon. Zinc powders are great for children too as they are so pure and easy to apply.

3. Not cause further environmental damage (i.e. coral reefs and chemical sunscreens)

“Aside from zinc containing sunblock, what do I need to use daily to care for my skin?”

To offer my thoughts on what is essential and what really works based on medical studies, I will respond to the most common questions I hear in my practice as the physician director of Viva Medical Aesthetics here in the Cowichan Valley.

Pharmaceutical grade VITAMIN C topically is the new “go to” for effective treatment of and protection from skin damage.

Vitamin C is amazing at protecting your skin from environmental pollution as well as treating and reversing some signs of sun damage. It is excellent for sensitive rosacea type skin as well. Studies are showing that 15% Vitamin C combined with Vitamin E and Ferulic Acid increases photoprotection. Vitamin C can be applied as a serum (this liquid consistency offers the best absorption), as a cream, or as a powder mixed into your moisturizer. Vitamin C, E and Ferulic Acid can be applied twice a

Quality and expensive are not necessarily the same. Expensive products do not necessarily contain quality ingredients. To make informed decisions about your products, make sure they have an ingredient list. Check that the

2. Midday: Reapply sunblock with a mineral powder.

Retinoids remain the gold standard for topical anti-ageing products.

They stimulate collagen, improve pigmentation, thicken thinning skin, and improve skin texture. Low percentage retinoids can be used by most people. The key is to start low and slowly increase the percentage as your skin becomes conditioned.

You just use retinoids at night but the use of a good sunblock in the day is essential since retinoids make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Retinol is available as a prescription (always ask for the lowest dose if just starting out) or as microencapsulated serums. Some anti-ageing creams claim they have retinol in them. Be careful to check the dosage to make sure there is enough to make a difference. I favour a stand-alone retinol serum or cream.

3. Bedtime: Cleanser, retinoid, Vitamin C, moisturizer.

“I do not want a complicated regime.”

The order is important. Treatment creams go closest to your skin.

Sunblock goes closest to the sun.

Positive ageing may look different for each of us.

I LOVE that, as I get older, I am able to choose how I want my ageing to look. For me, it is loving my partner, children, grandchildren and friends, supporting our local community, and taking care of my body. To me, this includes my skin and I want to do that in an informed way.

he House of Commons has been adjourned since June 20th, and the 42nd Parliament is essentially finished. Since then, I’ve enjoyed being home in our beautiful riding of CowichanMalahat-Langford, meeting and talking with constituents and attending the many fantastic events our beautiful communities have to offer. I’ve had great conversations with many of you about the incredible legislative initiatives proposed during this Parliament, and I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight some of that important work.

On the environment, Gord Johns (Courtenay-Alberni) introduced M-151, a national strategy to combat plastic pollution, and Nathan Cullen (Skeena-Bulkley Valley) introduced Bill C-429 to eliminate single-use plastics.

Both of these initiatives seek to keep plastics out of our oceans and landfills and helped pressure the Liberal government to announce the planned ban on single use plastics as early as 2021. There is much we can all be doing to protect our natural environment, but legislative change can help get us on the right track, and these are two fantastic initiatives seeking to do just that.

Rachel Blaney (North IslandPowell River) brought forward Bill C-325 in an effort to amend the Canadian Bill of Rights to enshrine into Canadian law the right to housing. Although this bill did not pass, it did, in conjunction with years of lobbying by New Democrats, help pressure the Liberals to finally bring in a National Housing Strategy.

There have been many legislative initiatives on protection of local food. Ruth Ellen Brosseau (Berthier-Maskinonge) proposed Bill C-231 to implement a National Food Waste Awareness Day, and Wayne Stetski (Kootenay-Columbia) shepherded his Bill C-281 to enact a National Local Food Day all the way through the House

of Commons, Committee, and into the Senate where, sadly, it will die on the Order Paper at the time of the election, due to the mismanagement of that unelected and unaccountable body.

Another that will suffer the same fate is Bill C-262 by Romeo Saganash (Abitibi-Baie-JamesNunavik-Eeyou), the culmination of decades worth of work toward guaranteeing the human rights and dignity of Indigenous Peoples through enshrining the United Nations Rights on Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) into Canadian law. Although time is up on the 42nd Parliament, we remain steadfast in our commitment to continue the fight for Indigenous rights.

I’d also like to mention two important pieces of legislation brought forward by the government: Bill C-48, which puts a moratorium on oil tankers off our Pacific north coast, and Bill C-68, which will fix many of the damages caused by the previous Harper government through its gutting of the Fisheries Act. I was proud to support both bills.

With the 43rd general election justaround the corner, it has given me pause for reflection on some of the many accomplishments, and other great initiatives that didn’t make it into law, proposed during the 42nd Parliament. It leaves me feeling hopeful and optimistic about the great work that will continue after the election, where I hope to continue representing the incredible people of this riding. I look forward to seeing you in the weeks and months ahead.

I

t was a sunny day in August. The KinPark Kids Campers were getting their hats on for the morning farm activity.

The plan was to do some harvesting . In a flash, we pulled up three pounds of carrots. Then, on to harvesting chick peas. The campers were skeptical; although they are drought tolerant, these chick pea plants looked sad, with yellow, crispy leaves.

I explained that we had to thresh them to harvest the peas.

“What’s that?” the children asked.

“Well,” I explained,

“threshing is what people have done for thousands of years to separate edible seeds from plants like wheat, beans and peas.”

Together, we started pulling plants, shaking soil off, and piling them up on a tarp. Then we folded the tarp over.

“Now, we stomp on this to crack the pods and get the chick peas to fall out.”

We stomped for a minute.

Then we pulled back the tarp: A handful of loose peas lay at the bottom of the pile. We kept going, and discovered how to make threshing into a game, by dancing on the tarp!

Over lunch we discussed the next step in saving seed, which requires wind. One clever boy grabbed a piece of cardboard from the workshop, and before you knew it, we

were back outside, learning how to winnow – that is, separate chaff and debris from the seed.

We poured seeds from bucket to bucket, and by waving pieces of cardboard, blew the chaff away, resulting in a pailfull of clean chick peas.

Next, with three pounds of carrots in hand, the group walked to CGC’s kitchen.

Thanks to adults behind the scenes, there was a bowl of pre-soaked KinPark chick peas waiting for us there, and recipes for Hummus printed out for each of the campers.

t’s the middle of summer, and hopefully kids are out playing and having a nice break from school.

I’m a firm believer that play is as important as school time, as is sleep, of course. Whether it’s rough and tumble physical play, arts and crafts, imaginative make believe, or even just dancing; every kind of play is valuable for different parts of our children’s developing minds. However, with devices becoming a bigger part of our daily lives, they are not only encroaching on our kids’ sleep time but also cutting into their play time. Here’s what I’ve been learning about...

How important is play for brain development?

A playful experience is a learning experience. Play is one of the most effective tools to promote brain development in children. Not only is it valuable for success in school, it also helps establish a wide variety of life skills. Let’s take a look at some of the functions play stimulates.

Developing social skills: Children establish boundaries between friends and learn how to pick up on social cues through play. This allows them to figure out when certain play is appropriate or not, and pick up on how other children react to it.

Gaining emotional control: Play can teach children how to identify their feelings, and help them learn how to manage their reactions to emotionally challenging situations.

Growing self awareness and regulation: While playing, our children learn how their behavior can affect other children, and how to manage their physical and emotional impulses.

Expanding creativity: Exploring make believe and imagination stimulates the creative region in our children’s brains.

Building self-confidence: Children will gain selfassurance, establish new friendships, and strengthen new skills, as they discover and immerse themselves in continued next page

How important is sleep for brain development?

After a full day of school and play, we all know how important it is for children to get a good night’s sleep so they can be well rested for the next day. However, sleep for a developing mind goes far beyond just feeling rested. Sleep is the “glue” that holds all of our children’s knowledge and ideas together.

Let’s dig deeper into why sleep is so vital.

Digesting information: While sleeping, our children’s brains have time to review, digest and store the knowledge they have collected throughout the day.

Creating connections: During the night, our children’s brains begin developing connections; “mind highways” as I like to call them. This allows new or stored information to be connected with other related ideas.

Increasing memory: Sleep is crucial for creating effective and long lasting memory systems in our children’s growing minds.

Encouraging behaviours: A healthy sleep schedule decreases hyperactivity and encourages positive, independent behavior in children.

Improving receptiveness: A good night’s sleep allows our children to reach optimal alertness, a state where they are most receptive and interactive. When our children are well rested, they are responsive and motivated.

being nurtured by a restful night, the hormone that promotes physical growth is primarily released during sleep. Getting enough sleep is crucial for growing children.

The effects of play and sleep on ADHD: As someone, among many, who has lived with ADD my entire life, I was grateful to stumble across a section about ADHD (and ADD) in my research. Unsurprisingly, play has a calming, therapeutic effect on children who have ADHD. It can help them to overcome feelings of restlessness, and provide them with an energy outlet.

Additionally, a proper sleep schedule can significantly improve classroom performance, attention span, and relationships with peers.

After having delved deeper into the subject of children, play and sleep, it is clear that setting boundaries is key to the wellbeing of our children. Balanced guidelines around the use of devices, making a variety of play a daily habit, as well as getting our children to bed on time, are all practices and routines we can be mindful to hold strong. Throughout their developmental stages, play and sleep are two vital ingredients in nurturing and supporting our children’s growth. Keeping this in mind as we ready ourselves for Back to School, will be essential for our children’s successful school year.

e love the sun. During the long, gloomy winter months, we think wistfully of summer days to come: Sitting on the beach, going for walks that don’t involve umbrellas, barbeques with friends, watching our gardens grow. Yes, we love the sun, and rightfully so. There would be no life on earth without it.

That being said, as with many good things in life, there is something to be said for moderation. The sun is extremely powerful, and needs to be treated with respect. A little sun is beneficial. It is a source of Vitamin D. Our mood improves after spending time in the sun. But overexposure is a horse of a different colour.

Feeling the burn in this case is not the way to go. At the very least, we will end up looking leathery and wrinkled years before our time. The worst case scenario is much grimmer...

Sunscreens: Informing Your Choice We are given some cautionary instructions: Avoid being in the sun between the hours of 10am and 2 pm This is not always possible, especially if you work outside. Slather on sunscreen, and reapply regularly. Well, that certainly sounds doable.

So, if we accept the fact that we do need protection, the next logical question is “what kind?”

When it comes to choosing sunscreen, superficially there are many options. However, there are really two basic differences, chemical vs mineral. To make an informed choice, we need to know how they differ. This can be discovered in the list of ingredients.

A chemical sunscreen is one whose active ingredients are made in a lab. They contain ingredients such as Oxybenzone, Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, and so on. These sunscreens work by absorbing the sun’s UV rays, after which a chemical reaction occurs, allowing these rays to dissipate.

The chemicals are absorbed by the skin, and trace amounts of them find their way into the bloodstream, and, consequently, the tissues. They have been found in bodily fluids, such as breast milk. The hormone levels of the body can be affected.

Unlike the chemical variety, natural sunscreens use minerals, namely zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide, as their main ingredients. These minerals do not penetrate the skin. Instead they sit on top, acting as a shield. They provide a physical barrier between the skin and the rays of the sun. The particles themselves are what is known as non-nano...that is, too large to be absorbed. They do not enter the bloodstream or tissues or bodily fluids.

The natural sunscreens have another very important benefit.

They do not endanger the environment. We have all seen, in pictures or in person, large numbers of people on a beach. Now imagine that every one of these people is wearing chemically-based sunscreen. When they enter the water, some of those chemicals are transferred to the marine environment. And if they do as they have been cautioned to, reapplying after every dip in the water, that is a large amount of material leaching in to the ecosystem that exists beneath the waves. We already know these chemicals have an effect on hormones. They cannot help but affect all the living organisms they come into contact with, from algae all the way up the food chain.

Natural Sunscreens will not have this effect. They are naturally-occurring, non-toxic, and do not dissolve easily in water. They will not poison marine ecosystems. They are effective at blocking the harmful rays of the sun. This choice sounds like a no-brainer. There is one particular aspect of these benevolent natural lotions, sprays, or sticks, however, which is not looked on with love. Although much improved from earlier days, they can still tend to leave a white residue on the body which can be considered a blight to our selfieloving selves. Many products are touted as having eliminated this inconvenient aspect, though, and there is only one way to find the one that works best for you. ugust will be another busy month for the volunteers at the Chemainus Valley Cultural Arts Society.

A new event on the annual calendar will take place on August 17, when the society hosts the first Country Music Jamboree, at Waterwheel Park in Chemainus.

The country music event will present some of Vancouver Island’s most popular entertainers. County Line, from Victoria, features the vocals of Megan and Hayden, backed by their band. With more than 500 shows since starting the group in 2013, they have shared the stage with the likes of Dierks Bentley, Brett Kissel, George Canyon, and Washboard Union.

Other top bands at the festival will include Wayne Montgomery with Montgomery County, Mary Egan with Mary’s Mayhem, and Sweet Potato Brown. The show gets underway at 2:00 PM on August 17.

August 10 will see the 2019 version of the longest-running of the Chemainus music events, that’s the annual Accordion Festival. This year the show starts at 11:00 AM,and continues through until 4:45 PM. There will be nine accordion bands to entertain during the afternoon.

The final music day at Waterwheel Park in August will be the Chemainus “Talent Saturday” event on August 24.

There are a number of local open-mic events, as well as musicians who gather on a regular basis in the Chemainus area. The Chemainus Valley Cultural Arts Society will be inviting the best of those performers to put on a show at Waterwheel Park in Chemainus

on August 24.

The regular Tuesday evening concerts in the park will continue throughout August at 7:00 PM each Tuesday. On the sixth of the month, Beatlemania Unplugged will entertain, with John Booth performing the Lennon vocal and acoustic guitar, Charlene Booth as the McCartney vocal and percussion, and Gary Atkinson as the Harrison vocal and acoustic guitar.

On August 13, Summer and the Third Degree will be on stage.

Summer performed the blues as Summer and the Sinners for many years, and has now joined forces with Doug Blondeau and his band, the Third Degree. The group will take you on a musical tour of Blues, R&B, and Funk.

The entertainment on August 20 will be La Familia, whose music will take you to another place and time, to celebrate the cheerful rhythms of Latin America. The band’s repertoire covers a vast variety of musical styles, including Salsa, Cumbia, Merengue, Rumba, Vallenato, Son Cubano, etc. Featured instruments include Latin percussion, trombone, trumpet, accordion, piano, guitars, and bass.

Reflection Of The Cobble Hill Fair

T

his reflection of the Cobble Hill Fair was written by Virginia Bonner, a historian and well known Cobble Hill Village resident, from her book titled, The Hamlet with an Attitude, which was first published in 2001. Although Jenny is no longer with us, her memory of the Fair lives on.

“For years, a magical enchantment has fallen over the quiet Village of Cobble Hill during fair time.

It is Friday morning in the middle of August in 1999 and as I look out our window colorful tents start to appear on the community hall grounds. By the afternoon, the hall and grounds are covered with people -- children and adults buzzing around like bees, preparing for the fair.

Hay bales are piled and the grass is all manicured.

Throughout the hall, tables line the wall -- their tops covered with white paper.

Listen carefully and you will hear the early arrival

of chickens. The 4-H clubs are checking to make sure the animal stalls are ready complete with the appropriate signs. Someone always strolls by and asks what 4-H means and a quick response is “Head, Heart, Hand and Health. Our motto is ‘Learn

by Doing’.”

Games start to set up and the track is made ready for the miniature train. The dunk tank hides beneath a large fir tree and the miniature golf game chooses its spot. The 4-H hall is ready for junior exhibitors and the newly painted outside stage awaits the entertainers.

On Friday evening, the lights appear in the hall and barns giving the appearance of a small city.

At five o’clock on Saturday morning a rooster crows as if to tell everyone to rise. By six several cars arrive followed closely by trucks and trailers loaded with farm animals.

Soon a carnival atmosphere takes over and the smell of breakfast is in the air.

For the remainder of the day, people file through the gates to greet friends and neighbours. The ‘Pipe Band’ leads the parade from the train station, and there is excitement, music and noise all around as one tries to decide which things to see first. Will there possibly be time to see everything?

Five o’clock soon arrives and people begin to leave.

Farm animals are loaded onto trucks for the trip home. The rabbits, sheep and birds are also departing and entrants pick up their exhibits from a now quiet hall.

By six thirty all is quiet. It’s as if nothing happened as the residents of the village settle back into their quiet life to await that magical happening again next August -- the Cobble Hill Fair.”

110th Cobble Hill Fair

ark Saturday, August 24th as a ‘must do’ and take in the 110th Cobble Hill Fair!

Our Old Fashioned Country Fair showcases everything that is great about living in the Cowichan Valley. The pancake breakfast starts at 7:30 a.m. followed by the horse show, animal displays and judging, the vendor village, hall displays, dog agility and duck herding as well as live stage entertainment. There is so much to see and enjoy at the Fair but this year we’re adding a twist with a ‘KIDS ZONE’.

The ‘KIDS ZONE’ will include a bouncy castle, obstacle course, photo booth, 2 large jenga games, corn hole tosses, washer tosses, face painting as well as our own ever popular fish pond with its terrific prizes. We’ll also provide popcorn and other treats for the kids.

‘KIDS ZONE’ visitors can stay all day or get their hand stamped to leave the area and come back later. Entry into the ZONE is $5 with everything included.

11th Annual Lower Cowichan River Cleanup

or ten years Lake Cowichan residents have got together in August to cleanup their river where it winds through town.

Join us this year on Sunday August 18th 8:30 - 1:30 in Central Park. In the early years they hauled out old stoves, bicycles, car axles, tires and debris of all types. In recent years the garbage haul has decreased to 1/2 tonne last year and even the cans and bottles are declining.

A good sign that visitors and town residents are taking better care of the river. So come out, dive in, have fun and help keep the Cowichan River Clean!

This soul satisfying annual event removes truck-loads of garbage from about 15 km of the iconic Cowichan River every year. It is timed to coincide with low water before the water rises and washes it all downstream as the salmon try to swim home. All welcome! No experience needed.

• Volunteers will be assigned to teams and routes during registration. Routes vary from shoreline shrubbery to hipwading to deep water diving. Route leaders will help you find a route that suits your abilities and equipment.

he Cowichan Valley Youth T Choir is about to enter its eighteenth season. In fact, having started in 2002 as one choir it has grown to include three levels: Junior Choir, Concert Choir, and Acafellas.

Young people aged 7 -17 who love to sing with others are accepted into one of the three choirs by audition. This is quite an informal process however. Director Sheila Johnson says she only asks 46

that choir members have discovered the difference between their speaking voice and singing voice, can match a given pitch, and that they really want to be a part of the choir.

In the coming season, the Junior Choir will be directed

by Connie Masson, while Sheila will continue to direct the Concert Choir and Acafellas. All choirs will be accompanied by Naomi Barclay, who has done so for most of the past seventeen years.

of the past seventeen seasons, all three choirs have taken part in the annual Cowichan Music Festival, and have been recommended to represent the Cowichan Valley at the Provincial level numerous times.

Last year, Acafellas, a group of nine boys aged 13 - 17, won the Men’s Choir Class in the BC Festival of the Arts (the Provincials), and went on to place second in the Canadian National Music Festival. Choirs taking part in both Provincial and National Festivals do so through a recording that is carefully monitored before being sent

Actress Sarah Cashin who played many roles in this performance really stole the show as the Queen. This woman was born to perform. The tone of her voice, the expressions on her face everything impeccably played.

She completely captivated her us as she moved from scene to scene. A pleasure to watch we look for her in future productions.

years and, with the addition of Light up the Night five years ago, it has only grown exponentially. With over 55 artists from all over the island gathering together on Sunday morning, coffee in one hand and art in the other, music from local musicians filling the air, you are guaranteed to find something you like. This year, we are lucky to have Duncan based painter, Laurel Hibbert as our guest artists as well as local artist that will be demonstrating their craft live. From original paintings, jewelry, fabric art, carvings and more as well as a place for kids to craft and create their own masterpieces, you will not be disappointed.

Light up the Night strives

to bring the focus to local artisans, craftspeople and the kids. It is a celebration for the whole family filled with music, light, arts and crafts and a plethora of island based vendors selling all sorts of interesting and unique products. With this event focused on the kids we will have many different activities to keep them entertained.

There will be a kid’s art tent where they can create their very own piece of art to take home and a live painting competition to watch as well as a movie projected right outside the library. Grab a glow stick and come enjoy a night out with the family.

he Clay Hub is vision that has been realized, it continues creating a dynamic community space to learn and play with clay. It has been over 4 years now that this has been a volunteer driven community space. The Clay Hub accommodates people of all ages in the Cowichan Valley who are interested in exploring clay play.

The Clay Hub began in 2014 when a few local potters became aware of the absence of an active community clay studio in the entire Cowichan Valley, a space for people to make pots and explore the magic of clay. A group of potters got together with a vision and lot of committed energy, they supported the Clay Hub in becoming a community reality. The Clay Hub is a part of The HUB, on 2375 Koksilah Road in Cowichan Station.

Here, we offer a variety of clay classes, workshops, and 3-hour open studio sessions 6 days a week.

This summer we have enjoyed running some fun classes for kids ages 6 +. This month, there is a Friday drop-in class for kids ages 6+ from 1 to 2:30 August 2nd, 9th, 16th. You can pre-register on-line for this weekly class or simply drop-in.

Over the summer, adults have enjoyed slip trailing

workshops, wheel throwing and mug classes and drop-in sessions. As for continued summer adult clay-play, we offer an ongoing ‘Mugs in Evolution’ one-time class that’s a ton of fun.

ike a lot of retired people on Vancouver Island we are concerned about how quickly human caused climate change is impacting our lives and the lives of everyone on the planet. Already we are facing serious climate issues in Canada. Our kids and grandkids will face problems that we, as retired people who enjoyed all the benefits of the fossil fuel era, can hardly imagine.The question is: What can we do right now?

A couple of years ago our son bought an electric car which he drives to work each day.

Inspired by his decision, last December we bought a Bolt EV and had a home charge station installed. The Bolt has a 400 km range and can make the trip from Nanaimo to Victoria and back without needing a charge. We then looked into having solar panels installed on the roof.

Sharing Your Solar Story lots of sun. However, three one hundred year old douglas firs stood about 12 ft from the front of the house, shading the entire roof. We loved those trees and knew they sequestered a lot of carbon, but we also realized they were becoming a safety hazard.

For us to make use of all that sun power, our beloved trees would have to go. Davey removed the trees in March.

By April the roof had been

upgraded. In May, 32 solar panels had been installed by Viridian. We picked Viridian because it is a Vancouver Island company and a worker coop. It was a good decision. They coordinated the work with the roofers and everything was done efficiently and professionally.

The 12.32 kw package allows us to use the power when it is first converted and

then the excess goes into the grid for future use. We have apps on our phones and computer showing what is happening all the time. The panels will provide about half our annual electrical needs - including charging the car, and power for hot water, stove, fridge, dryer etc. The total cost (including the roofers and special roof mounts for the torch-on roof but not including tree removal) was $35,500. If the cost of electricity and gas stay the same, the panels will pay for themselves in about 15 years. We did not get any financial assistance from the government for installing solar panels. We strongly recommend that this should become government policy asap. It feels good to be doing something toward reducing the impact of climate change.

ugust is bountiful month in the garden. Fruit and vegetables are ripe, and we have bees to thank. Bees pollinate an estimated onesixth of the world’s flowering plants and about one third of the plants that produce the food we consume.

Honeybees are facing a lot of obstacles: pesticides, disease, mites and habitat loss. Creating a garden that provides a source of nectar for native bees and honeybees is more important than ever.

By planting the right plants, and flowers with the right structure you can attract not only bees, but numerous other beneficial pollinators to your garden.

Bees prefer plants that have many clusters of small flowers on flower heads so they can maximize their efforts. Bees favour racemes, umbels and composite flower heads. Racemes are clusters of flowers all along a stem, such as lavender, sage and many other herbs. Umbels are many flowers on short stalks forming an umbrella shape.

Queen Anne’s Lace, dill, and

many plants in the carrot family all have this flower structure. Composite flowers are daisy type flowers. The centre of these flower heads is actually made up of many, many tiny flowers called disc florets.

If you want to attract bees to your garden select plants with these flower structures, and plants that are members of the rose, aster, mint or carrot family.

For gardeners who have deer to fend off, try incorporating flowers from the mint family (Lamiaceae) into your garden. These flowers tend to be fragrant and deter the deer while also attracting numerous beneficial insects and bees to the garden. Many of these plants originate from the Mediterranean so they thrive in well-drained soil, full sun and hot sites. Some of my personal favourites are Russian sage and Wall germander. Russian sage is a woody perennial that bears lavender blue blooms from July into September. It can handle coastal, windy, exposed sites and the deer couldn’t care less about it.

Cut it back hard in early spring to encourage a nice framework of blossoms in summer. Wall germander

produces rosy-lavender blossoms in the same time period but has evergreenfoliage. Used as a low hedge in English rose gardens, it is also tough as nails and perfect for a low-maintenance, bee friendly herb garden.

Honorable mentions in the mint family go to bluebeard (Caryopteris), licorice mint (Agastache foeniculum), and Salvias (annual and perennial).

The daisy family (Asteraceae) reigns supreme in the plant world when it comes to attracting bees to the summer garden. Containing over 21,000 species the daisy family has a flower for every type of gardener. Asters, sunflowers, dahlias, cosmos, and yarrow are all fantastic

plants for the bees, and easy to grow!

My personal daisy family favourites are Echinacea ‘Magnus’, Echinops ‘Veitch’s Blue’, and Achillea ‘Moonshine’.

Echinacea looks fantastic in a prairie or dry garden and is generally ignored by the deer. Veitch’s Blue globe thistle reaches heights of 3-4 feet and is a bold and beautiful violet-blue perennial.

Moonshine yarrow is a bright yellow and flowers all season long. It can grow in the poorest of soils and is also on my “tough as nails” garden plants list.

The rose and carrot family are full of bee-loving plants as well. Many fruit trees are in the rose family, so while relying on bees to produce fruit, they also offer an earlyseason nectar source. Spirea is also loved by the bees, and is a reliable shrub for the black-thumbed gardener.

Carrot family (Apiaceae) flower members often have umbel flowers. Parsley, celery, fennel, dill, carrot and coriander flowers are all great for the bees so don’t fret if you let these plants go to flower.

important things you can do for the bees and pollinators in your garden.

Firstly, provide season-long food sources. Winter flowering jasmine or Viburnum, Witch hazel and Himilayan Sweet box bloom in the winter months and will provide late or early season food sources. It’s also important to plant native species for our native pollinators.

Mahonia, kinnickinick and nootka rose are great native plants to use at the gardens edge. For those gardeners’ that must resort to using pesticides in the garden, please be responsible and follow the label.

Read the label thoroughly because many pesticides should not be applied while bees are foraging.

Lastly, leave a little bit of wild. Don’t mow the margins of your yard. Not only will it provide a food source for pollinators but also an undisturbed habitat. Bees do a lot of work for us so let’s return the favour and try be more conscientious with our plant choices and gardening practices.

W

hen Coastal Bliss Adventures opened its Cowichan Bay Kayaking location, we knew there was a history of bioluminescence in the bay. The question we had was whether people are willing to be kayaking as late as 11:00 pm! Moonlight tours had been a draw for a while, but they end earlier, just after the moon rises. When we started exploring the later evenings on the water, we knew quickly that bioluminescence tours would be a hit.

Bioluminescence is when living things produce light from chemical reactions in their bodies. Most people are familiar with fireflies, which are a common source of bioluminescence on land.

While there are very few

freshwater bioluminescent organisms, the sea environment is full of them. Many vertebrates and invertebrates produce chemiluminescence, or light from chemical reactions. We suspect that most of the bioluminescence in Cowichan Bay is produced by dinoflagellates, or tiny, plankton-like organisms.

Dinoflagellates produce luciferin, the light-producing chemical compound, and an enzyme called luciferase, or photoprotein, to light up. For these creatures, if they are disturbed in the water, they light up with a tiny flash.

Paddling into the estuary only lets us see this spectacular phenomenon as the light dims to a very low light in the night sky. Once it is dark enough, tiny sparkles begin to show up as the paddle moves in the water. Eventually producing a blanket of light that follows the the paddle. On some occasions, small fish will light up an area producing flashes in the water,

Kayaking in the evening in Cowichan Bay is one of the best times. The thermal winds have eased and the activity has died down, making it is a peaceful way to enjoy the evening and get a different perspective on the Cowichan Valley, looking up it from the water of the bay. WEIR READY Since the 1950s, a 97cm concrete weir has spanned Cowichan Lake to store water. Spill gates control water flows from approximately April to October, gradually releasing water so that it lasts throughout the dry season. The weir was built for the Crofton paper mill but sustaining water flows provides many important public benefits.

Unfortunately, with our changing climate, the weir’s storage capacity is not enough to keep the river flowing well through our longer drier summers.

Low river flows effect our collective well-being.

They threaten the five species of salmon, four species of trout and vibrant ecosystems that comprise the Cowichan watershed; they impact indigenous cultures that are interconnected with healthy watersheds; they threaten 600 union jobs at the Crofton mill; they could cause water quality issues tied to sewage dilution or impact drinking water supplies for some. River-based recreation and tourism are major contributors to the local economy and the quality of life of citizens. Many wildlife species are also negatively affected by drought and low river flows.

Luckily, there is an option to keep the Cowichan River flowing for generations by replacing the weir. The Cowichan Watershed Board has unanimously declared this to be its top priority for the health of the watershed.

Flourish Hypnosis and the Emotion Code have always been curious about alternative therapies, including hypnosis and energy work. Being a herbalist, I understand the chemistry interactions within our bodies, and our physical functions, sure, but what about the emotional and psychological aspects of ourselves.

My curiosity grew about hypnosis in particular because it approaches the subconscious, not an aspect of ourselves that is necessarily very accessible.

I met Helena Jehnichen in Cobble Hill, she is a certified Hypnotherapist and a Certified Emotion Code Practitioner.

Helena is warm, professional and friendly, and knows her stuff!

Her office is inviting and I felt at ease as soon as I entered it. I also appreciated that Helena had put out a binder in the common room with affirmations, and uplifting quotes for anyone to take. What a kind soul I thought, dedicated to lift people up even if she has never met them!

One of her titles is the Stop Smoking Lady, she assists people who are ready to quit with Hypnosis, digging deep into re wiring the fight or flight emotions that are often related to addiction.

But that is not all she does. She also a Certified Emotion Code practitioner, this is something I

had never heard of.

The Idea behind it, is that emotionallycharged events from our past can still be haunting us in the form of “trapped emotions”; emotional energies that literally inhabit our bodies, and can even cause physical pain, let alone blockages that translate into negative behaviours. I was all over it.

What was absolutely phenomenal about the Emotional Code Practice is that it can be done on the phone, on skype, or at the office, and is not a counselling session, Helena, does not ask

questions about your past, or present or what is bothering you. In a 25 minute session, after having my permission to proceed, she began the work of recognising my trapped emotions and barely addressed me in the process. She used muscle testing to recognise the blockages, and released them. Once the session was over, I was 100% lighter! I was surprised at how light I felt in such a short time period. On my way out of her office, ecstatic at the prospect of this new therapy, a man walked in. I don’t usually eavesdrop, but one thing he said peaked my attention “My wife no longer has pain in her knee after her session with you, she is totally cured!” Helena responded with “it isn’t a cure it is a release”.

O

ver the past 20 years, I have spent time every summer at Nitinat Lake. It was during my childhood that kiteboarding took root here. I am now one of many women who have been drawn in by the lure of kiteboarding.

In fact – kiteboarding has changed my life. I learned to kiteboard in the summer of 2016, and began instructing in 2018. My partner Martin Dovick and I run Strong Kiteboarding, one of the two kiteboarding schools located at Nitinat. We are both passionate about the sport and enjoy sharing our knowledge and experience with kiteboarding. Our students come from all walks of life, with varied athletic backgrounds.

Previously a male-dominated sport, many women are coming in to balance the scales. Something I’ve noticed among female students is the common misconception that women need more hand-holding in order to learn how to kiteboard. They have been

told they need a group setting, a very slow pace, special gear, etc. This is a marketing scheme. We don’t need gear that only comes in the colour pink, or group lessons where very little time is actually spent in the water. We do not learn differently or more slowly than men. The learning curve varies from person to person, regardless of gender.

Both men and women can find the first time they touch a kite scary and intimidating.

Both can be overconfident in their abilities.

Concenti Womens Choir Concenti Singers was started in 1983 by husband and wife team Jim and Sheila Johnson, both taking turns as choir director.

At that time it was a mixed choir involving all adult voices: sopranos, altos, tenors, baritones and basses. For the first thirty years, the choir rehearsed twice a week requiring total commitment from all choir members. They performed two programmes each season, in December and in the Spring. In the early years most performances took place at the Cowichan Theatre, often bringing in professional guests, many of whom were jazz musicians with whom Jim sang as a soloist. Jim passed away in 2012, and Sheila continues to direct.

With the dwindling number of men interested in singing, as well as the increasing number of choirs now in the Valley, the decision was made in 2018 to become Concenti Women’s Choir. This season, their 37th., they will continue to meet once a week for rehearsals which are full of hard work and much laughter. Their repertoire is varied including both a cappella and accompanied songs from the past three hundred years up to and including the present day.

Whatever they sing, their aim is to do justice to the composer, and to bring the music alive for the audience.

3. Beginning to Shift: The Diaphragmatic Breath As we Inhale, the Diaphragm contracts, moving down to give the chest space for the lungs to fill with oxygen.

To tune into the descending quality of this dome shaped muscle, we can place a hand at upper abdomen, or lower ribs. See if you can soften the abdomen.

hroughout more than 50 years Alanis Obomsawin has filmed the strength and determination of Indigenous Peoples. As well, she brings into focus the topics of injustice and discrimination in Canada. She is amazing! In her 86th year, she is making her 53rd film.

29 years ago every Canadian newspaper reported the Oka confrontation, where the Mohawk defended their territory against developers who felt it most important to expand a golf course and build condominiums – on land the Mohawk honoured as it held the graves of those who had gone before. After two deaths and 78 days the golf course development was stopped.

Alanis Obomsawin saw it as “history”. Though she was told to leave, she stayed to record this event that set the Mohawk against the Quebec Police and the Canadian Army. Obomsawin documented the Mohawk standing up for their land “ to tell the story ‘til the end”; she added archival sources relating the confrontation to the overall history of Canada.

here are some very ecologically sound choices we all make that are well practiced this time of year such as; growing your own food, conserving water usage, shopping at the local market etc. Below are a few green summer ideas you may not have considered but would be great fun to incorporate with your family this year.

1. Build and use a solar oven.

Lots of plans available on line that are simple and easy to build. Get the kids interested by allowing them to bake cookies in it and then cross your fingers for a sunny day!

2. Start a neighbourbood pool of things that people have but don’t use every day. For adults you can pool tools, lawn mower, sewing machine, bread maker and other unusual kitchen items etc. For kids you can pool sports equipment like hockey/ soccer nets, camping gear, wagons etc. With respectful

rules around sharing of items it is a great way to reduce consumerism and build community relationships.

3. Learn how to can fruits and veggies. Squirrels have it right, collecting food all summer for the coming winter. If we can and preserve our summer’s bounty we’ll reduce the long distance travel of all the out-of-season foods we need to purchase.

4. Use homemade recipes from natural ingredients to keep bugs away from yourself as well as your garden. Many effective recipes available on line with ingredients you likely already have in your cupboards.

5. Make your vacation a staycation. Reduce your carbon footprint by staying home on your holiday time.

Unplug the computer and TV just like you would if you were on a beach holiday, leave the car parked and ride your bike to explore all the touristy things in your own area.

Summer is an excellent time to slow the pace down and to reconnect, with ourselves, our friends and family, and also with our beautiful planet.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

S

leep apnea is a serious medical condition unique to humans. Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by collapse of the mid-section of the airway above the trachea and below the oral/nasal cavities. Central sleep apnea is caused by failure of the central and peripheral receptors (e.g. carotid body) in the nervous system to initiate breathing. There can also occur a combination of the above two conditions.

These phenomena also include hypopnea which simply stated means reduced breathing with significant loss of oxygen in the blood-called oxygen desaturation.

Reduced oxygen saturation during sleep along with very poor quality sleep causes significant stress. Sleep is designed by nature to be restorative and to afford us a period of time during our daily lives when body tissues get a chance to recover. This includes the brain. Like the rest of our body the brain has lymphatic supplies to allow the removal of naturally produced toxins, for example beta-amyloid.

Drainage of these waste products also involves glial cells and this system in the brain is referred to as “glymphatic”. Sleep is critical to the function of this process.

With the poor quality sleep associated with sleep apnea there is a failure of blood pressure to drop during the night. Likely partly why high blood pressure and sleep apnea are correlated.

The list of medical conditions associated with sleep apnea is long and includes metabolic syndrome, hypertension, and greater risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer and automobile accidents (due to sleepy driving).

The most widely accepted treatment for obstructive sleep apnea is continuous positive air pressure (CPAP) to splint open the collapsible portion of the airway between the oro/

nasopharynx and the trachea.

CPAP (or Bi-Pap or AutoPap) is the “gold standard “for the treatment of OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea).Problems with CPAP arise from frequent non acceptance of the system by the patient for a variety of reasons.

A very good alternative to CPAP is an oral appliance designed to advance the lower jaw and the tongue along with it. This also splints open the airway.

There is no doubt, proven by many good studies that such oral appliances are effective in treating OSA. Although not as efficacious as CPAP (or other applied air pressure) oral appliances are often equally or more efficient due to much greater patient acceptance.

Who can Diagnose Sleep Apnea?

Only a Physician with special training in sleep medicine can properly diagnose sleep apnea.

The rest of us including primary care physicians, dentists, etc. can be very effective however in screening for sleep disordered breathing, including sleep apnea.

Typically in my dental office, as the Dentist, if we have found evidence that suggests sleep apnea through screening tools, example Epworth Sleepiness scale, and also often conditions that are commonly associated with sleep apnea that are obvious to Dentist’s and hygienists, we will refer the patient to their primary care physician with our findings.

If and only if the primary care physician or sleep specialist find the patient to be suffering from obstructive sleep apnea and the decision is made between patient and medical doctor that an oral appliance is preferred will a qualified sleep dentist become involved.

A prescription from the medical doctor, usually a pulmonologist or internal medicine doctor is required, specifically requesting oral appliance therapy, before a qualified sleep dentist can or should assess whether an oral appliance might help.

Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine I will see patients to try to help treat obstructive sleep apnea after receiving such a prescription.

As an aside…since there is such a strong correlation between snoring and obstructive sleep apnea before I will consent to making a snoring appliance I will always recommend a referral to a physician to consider a sleep study first. Only a qualified medical doctor not a dentist can properly differentially diagnose OSA from primary snoring.

Why is the differentiation important?

Because sleep apnea has such serious health effects and because current estimates have sleep apnea at about 80% undiagnosed, it is inappropriate to assume that primary snorers do not have

obstructive sleep apnea.

I sincerely hope this article has been helpful to the reader and I hope to follow up with many others dealing with related topics like childhood OSA and how that presents, and the difference between men and women’s symptoms and how they present.

ummer bring our dogs in touch with spear grass, a generic term to describe any grass whose seeds are coated with barbs. These barbs cause the seeds to catch in an animal’s fur so it can travel and be planted elsewhere.

Unfortunately, the barbs can cause the seed to embed in our pet’s skin.

Spear grass fields are easy to see and avoid; tall grasses that resemble fields of wheat should be avoided because spear grass can be dangerous unless you give your dog a thorough check before getting back home. Check between toes, top and bottom, under the belly and around and inside the ears and eyes.

(Hey, you’re checking for ticks already…)

At Lucky Dog U-Bath we see dogs with dozens of seeds packed between their toes. Even if those seeds don’t enter their body, it must be uncomfortable.

Those little seeds are visible and easy to pull off the fur or skin if caught soon. If left, sometimes the little nasties will embed in the skin. The barbs mean that the seed can only move in one direction and as your dog moves, the seed will creep further into the skin.

Your dog will likely be licking or scratching at the area to alert you to a problem and you can still see the seed. Infection will begin as the body tries to dispel the invader. If you catch it at this point, apply a warm, wet cloth to bring fluids to the area and then carefully and slowly pull the seed out with tweezers or pliers.

If the seed isn’t caught in time it can travel a long way into the body. Strange, but true. The most common spear grass injury is between

What do we know about the depths of a forest or the life of a single tree?

Eat Your Medicine Microdosing with Cannabis Rachel Allen enjoys the good life of the Cowichan Valley and loves to inspire those around her.

aking Cannabis orally, through digestion, is a wonderful method of receiving medicine. Humans have been using Cannabis as medicine since the dawning of our kind. For all of our time and growth as a species, we have had cannabis at our side as food, as medicine, as textiles and for spiritual connection and ceremony. Some say that hemp seeds saved humanity through ice ages and starvation.

Hemp was certainly one of the earliest cultivated crops. Our bodies have an endocannabinoid system that was only revealed in 1992, after the discovery of THC. Science has worked backwards to determine the purpose and importance of this system. When cannabinoids enter our receptor sites, we experience a tremendous range of musculoskeletal, neurological, digestive, mental and spiritual responses that move us towards balance. Our bodies inherently want to return to balance and cannabis helps us shift to our natural state of homeostasis by providing us with ideal nourishment and healing.

Now that cannabis is legal in Canada, many people are curious about exploring cannabis in the edible form, but want to do it safely. Although cannabis is harmless and safe for consumption, at higher doses the THC creates an intense psychoactive effect which can feel like an overdose, especially for those who are new to the

experience. Microdosing is the safest way to begin using cannabis as medicine. It is the concept of taking small, measured amounts of extract throughout waking hours to maintain a continuous, low-level of cannabinoids in our system.

In low doses, the psychoactive effect of THC is minimal, yet we are able to reap the benefits of the medicine against the symptoms of our ailments.

Common sense and preparation are your greatest allies on your journey with cannabis. Many different factors will affect your experience and your results. Here are my top 5 tips to help you be successful using cannabis orally.

1. Choose Your Extract based on origin, quality and purity. Whether you are using a tincture, baked good, honey, butter or oil extraction, be sure that your source is reputable and organic. Imagine that the potency and clarity of your medicine comes from the intention and care taken through all stages of its creation, from germination of the seed to pouring extracts into jars. The energy of those who created the medicine will be reflected in the product. A good question to ask about any product is, “Was it created with love or with greed?”

2. Indica or Sativa? Strain matters. There are now thousands of strains of Cannabis being grown, with more being constantly created as strains are hybridized together. Choose the strain that best matches your symptoms to create your ideal medicine. Many people don’t realize that sativas and indicas differ greatly in the their effect on our body and mind. Indicas are more common because of their high yield, smaller size and shorter time to harvest. They are ideal for pain, sleep, appetite, and generally create a relaxed response in the body. Sativas on the other hand, create a more energetic response, bringing

mental clarity, inspiration and motivation. My entire world changed when I began microdosing with sativas. It helped me focus, manage my anxiety and stay alert through my daily activities without feeling impaired.

3. Less is more when you begin working with cannabis. There is no benefit to taking too much and feeling overwhelmed by the psychoactive effect. Everyone has heard the stories of people eating a whole brownie and ending up ‘high’ for two days.

Imagine that the goal is to find the ‘knife edge’ where you have maximum relief of symptoms and manageable psychoactive effect. Instead of eating a whole brownie, cut it into 6 or 9 pieces and eat one piece. Standardize your portions to equal about 10mg and take one dose every hour until your symptoms have been reduced, or until you feel uncomfortable.

4. Eating tolerance is not the same as smoking tolerance.

Even if you have been smoking for decades, when you ingest cannabis for the first time, you will have a low tolerance. This tolerance goes up over time if you consume it regularly, which gives you a larger ‘buffer zone’. The crux with ingesting cannabis, is the length of time it takes to be absorbed into your body . I find that between 15 - 45 minutes I will experience the effect. Always wait one hour between doses. Holding a healthy respect for the power of your medicine will help

you develop a deep sense of communion with your herb.

5. Documentation is the only way to truly see the results of your experimentation. I like to use a 1-10 scale for symptoms/ pain and also for psychoactive effect. Have these two headings across the top and write the time in rows going down. Wait one hour after taking a dose to do the assessment, then take another dose if desired.

Approach your cannabis health plan with common sense. Starting slowly will help you gain confidence in understanding how your medicine makes you feel.

Contemplate your own wellbeing and how it feels to be proactive in managing your health naturally. Be empowered to become the master of your own health with cannabis as medicine.

Kimchi is a traditional Korean ferment made using a simple salt-brine method. It’s easy to make, super good for you, and in my opinion, it’s delicious and complements a variety of dishes. There are infinite recipes and variations of kimchi (even fruit kimchis) but you’ll often find napa cabbage as a prominent ingredient as well as ginger, garlic and chilis. You can feel free to include combinations of bok choi, daikon, kohlrabi, radish, leek, shallot, onion, scallions and more; these ingredients make kimchi a nutritional powerhouse. 5G: Why It’s Coming, How It Works, and What You Can Do About It

F

ollowing a recent presentation at Duncan United Church with speakers on the topic of 5G (5th Generation mobile broadband technology), valley voices have been buzzing. South Korea led the charge, launching 5G country-wide in April 2019; many other countries worldwide are on track to follow suit. Canadians can expect the transition to 5G to occur by 2020, with various municipalities set to acquire the service at a sooner date.

In light of 5G’s imminent presence in our community, it is imperative that we educate ourselves while we have the chance to impact the implementation decision. If you are already familiar with the serious health concerns (see Ramazzini Institute study completed March 2018 and US National Toxicology Program Sept 2018) you may sign a global petition at www.5gSpaceAppeal.org, or a Canada wide petition

by August 16. To press date, Geneva, Brussels and a municipality in Rome have said “No” to 5G; the next months will reveal whether other cities or countries will follow suit.

The Biochemistry of 5G (presented by Dr. Pall): 5G is designed to provide all regular wireless internet services at a higher speed.

This is primarily to enable AI (artificial intelligence)related wireless demands, as well as increase response time

for displaying and tailoring consumer advertisements.

5G’s increased speed (and general function) is attributable to a series of high-frequency electrical ‘pulses’ emitted from a microtransmitter (small white box mounted on telephone poles, cell towers, etc.).

These pulses alter the electromagnetic environment

to which Voltage Gated Calcium Channels (VGCCs) in human and animal cells are exposed. VGCCs are a kind of integral (more specifically channel) protein in the plasma membrane (surrounding membrane) of cells. VGCCs open to allow the passage of Ca2+ (calcium ions) into and out of the cell.

VGCCs are extremely sensitive to changes in the usual intensity and frequency of the electromagnetic activity around them below the 1998 ICNRP Safety guidelines.

• Calcium ion concentration in the cell regulates many other intra- and extracellular biological processes, including but not limited to neuron firing, endocrine systems and functions, and stem cell growth and development. More About Electro-Magnetic Frequencies

F

or many years, I have been learning about using energy for healing in various ways. I have also been researching higher wave length negative EMF’s and their very harmful side effects. I have a sensitivity to rogue frequencies, having slept in a room with a (not-so) Smart meter for many years, and surrounded daily by wifi, cell phones, computers and other devices. on emission of short-wave radiation and the proximity of micro-transmitters to wireless users is a greater necessity than was the case with 3rd and 4th generation (3G and 4G) technologies. In practical terms, this means microtransmitters every two to ten houses/buildings. This, along with satellite 5G coverage, means that individuals cannot ‘opt-out’ of the influence or reach of the grid.

Fibre optic technology, the use of light (running through lines similar to those of telephones) to carry data, provides a plausible alternative to 5G technologies.
