The 2024 Memorial Day Ceremony in Newnan honored PFC Donald Lowery.

Originally scheduled for Veterans Park, the ceremony was moved next door to McKoon’s Funeral Home due to rain. Lowery grew up in the Madras area off of Happy Valley Circle. He was killed in action by an enemy sniper while on patrol in Vietnam.

Local Classes Offer Lessons on Nutrition, Fitness and More To improve or maintain good health, it’s important to attend regular doctor’s appointments and medical screenings, as well as learn about beneficial health practices.

Several local organizations, including UGA Extension Coweta County, District 4 Public Health – Georgia Department of Public Health and Summit Family YMCA, offer programs and classes, mostly free of charge, to teach local residents important lessons on a variety of health and wellness topics. Learn more: UGA Extension Coweta County UGA Extension Coweta County is presenting the Coweta County Senior Living 2024 Health & Wellness Series. Olivia Handley, Coweta County Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) agent, will teach the classes on the third Monday of each month at 10:30 a.m. at Tommy Thompson Senior Center, 29 Hospital Road in Newnan.

The health and wellness classes, which are free of charge, will last 30 minutes each. The series is geared toward seniors, but open to people of all ages.

The Dec. 16 class will instruct participants on how to seek out healthy, nutritious snacks during holiday parties.

This summer and fall, Handley will teach canning classes through her duties as a Coweta County FACS agent. Each class is limited to 12 people, so call 770-254-2620 to reserve a spot.

The fee is $30 per class. All classes will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Coweta County UGA Extension Office at 255 Pine Road in Newnan.

Q. Do almond milk and almond milk products count as a true dairy food?

NO. Almond milk and almond milk products are not dairy foods.

There are so many choices when you look at any dairy shelf these days in grocery stores. Many are made fom plant milks and tout themselves to be dairy products and great sources of calcium. But few actually fill the bill. Let’s look at what a dairy product is, and then we can truly understand the reasoning behind the answer.

Dairy foods are foods made from milk, typically mammals’ milk and contain calcium, protein, potassium, and Vitamins A & D, along with several other trace nutrients. These are essential for good health. Calcium and Vitamin D are necessary for bone health, while Vitamin A is needed for good vision and immune health.

Protein is needed for muscle development and potassium helps maintain a healthy blood pressure. While these nutrients are found in other foods as well, they are not in the abundance that they are found in dairy foods.

The United States Department of Agriculture recommends MyPlate as a simple guide for making healthy food choices. Dairy is an important part of a healthy diet. Milk, yogurt, and cheese are included as part of the dairy group in MyPlate, even the lower fat or fat free versions of dairy still have the same health benefits as their whole milk counterparts. Lactose free dairy options are also great because they maintain all their needed nutrients to still be called a dairy food, they only have the lactose removed. Lactose is a sugar in milk which can be hard for some people to digest. Dairy foods that are high in fat content but not calcium are not included in the MyPlate Dairy Group and include cream cheese, sour cream, heavy cream, and butter.

The only plant-based milk substitute which can be counted as a dairy food is Calcium-fortified soy milk and fortified soy-milk products.

These products are fortified with additional calcium, vitamin A & D so they can be more similar to cow’s milk. While they are not actually equivalent to cow’s milk, they can be counted as servings of dairy. Soy milk is the only plant-based milk with similar amounts of protein to cow’s milk. But no other plant-based milk alternative can be a true dairy food: this includes almond, rice, coconut, oat, or hemp milks. Their nutrient content is not like cow’s milk or fortified soy milk, and they have very little protein.

There are other calcium choices for those who do not eat or drink dairy products. But these are not considered dairy products. Calcium fortified juices and milk alternatives, such as the almond or rice milk, canned fish, tofu, and some leafy greens have calcium. These are great ways to supplement the calcium needed for a healthy diet. Most adults need around 3 cups or servings of dairy daily, while children under the age of 9 need 2 to 2 ½ cups daily. It is best to try to vary sources of dairy for a more varied nutrient value.

A cool new salad to help you beat the heat Do you ever get to the grocery store and stand there in amazement as you consider all the choices we have these days? Sometimes, I wonder what it was like back when spaghetti noodles didn’t come in thirty-seven shapes and when rice came in simple plastic pouches and not multiple varieties hailing from every corner of the globe.

Occasionally, I fantasize about how nice it would be if each section of the store came with a sort of groceryshopping assistant, someone I could walk up to and say, “Look, here’s the recipe I want to make. Which products do you recommend?” In my fantasy, the snappy grocery assistant would smile and say, “Ah! Good choice. Let me be of service.”

No such person having appeared during my most recent visit to the grocery store, I knew I would have to make selections myself. And so it was that I stood there in the grocery aisle and tried to remember, “Is orzo pasta or rice?” There was something tricky about it, and then I remembered—orzo looks like rice but is actually pasta.

It had been a while since I’d had any orzo, but I was flipping through one of my vintage metal recipe boxes the other day and came across this recipe for Orzo, Pea, and Pepper Salad. When the weather is hot, I enjoy a nice, cool summer salad. It can do duty as a side dish, and a slightly larger serving can easily become lunch or supper.

According to the delightfully named Pastaevangelists.com, “As well as being the perfect solution for midweek recipes due to its high protein content, the density of semolina flour used to make orzo provides the pasta with a firmness needed to ensure it maintains its shape whilst remaining soft and light in texture.

This is particularly important for cold salads using orzo, as there are often many ingredients which need to be mixed in which might otherwise cause the pasta to fall apart or become stodgy if over-mixed.” I agree with that assessment, as the orzo held up well to the dressing in this salad and didn’t wimp out on me.

If you’re looking for a new summer salad, this one is quite tasty and a breeze to prepare, so I hope you’ll give it a try.

This week, Winters Media & Publishing visited with local business owner Greg Carter of Southern Signature Solutions to learn more about him, his Coweta County-based company and a big announcement.

Question: How many years have you been in business and what inspired you to start this business?

Greg: “A total of 24 years ... While in corporate America, used to dream of having my own business and stop commuting to Atlanta every day. So when my position was eliminated, I simply took advantage of that opportunity and made the leap.”

Question: What is your background and how did you get into this career?

Greg: “I worked for the phone company, Sprint, right out of high school for around 15 years. A re-organization eliminated Greg Carter my job in 1999. When I was with Sprint, I had built 3 custom Owner homes for personal use ... that said to say, I also had a construction background to consider once I was laid off. I have a friend that I had met while working with Sprint that had a construction company and offered me a job in sales as a temporary position until I sorted things out. Little did I know this turned out to be the blessing that launched me into starting my own company. I am forever grateful to my friend, Bill Rains for that opportunity. That has been 25 years ago and Bill and I still reminisce about those days.”

Question: Tell the readers about Southern Signature Solutions. What you do and what makes it special?

Greg: “ We do pretty much all home upgrades and remodeling. We tend to do more exterior than interior but we are set up to do most anything that our customers require. Some examples are roofing, siding, patio roof covers, decks, windows, and barns. In addition to the home upgrades, we do land clearing, driveway installs and rebuilds, light grading and hardscape work.

We aim for the customer to be more satisfied than they imagined being. And to do that takes exceptional workmanship, skill and attention to details.”

Question: What’s an interesting fact about your business that most people don’t know?

Greg: “Our in-house team includes my oldest son, Ryan, nephews Cody and Jeremy, and brother in law, Chuck.”

Question: What’s the biggest challenge for Southern Signature Solutions regarding doing business today?

Greg: “Trying to keep pricing competitive amidst extreme inflation.”

Question: When you are not working, what is your favorite thing to be doing?

Greg: “Spending time with my sons, riding ATVs, cooking and working on my recently acquired property in prep for building a new home.”

From Deciding to Sell to Sold

I had the pleasure of speaking to the residents at Wesley Woods of Newnan recently regarding the listing process. I thought I would share a condensed version here. My presentation was entitled “From Deciding to Sell to Sold.”

The first step in deciding to sell is to think about where you are in life. Maybe you own your first home, and you need a bigger house for a growing family. Maybe you have a large home, and your children are grown. It may be time to downsize and purchase a smaller house. Wherever you are in life, it is important to really think about what you need moving forward. Often though, sellers do not have a choice in selling as they may be moving for a job, due to a foreclosure, or divorce, or even death.

What is the local market like where your property is located? Is it a buyer’s market or a seller’s market?

Maybe it is not the right time to sell. In a seller’s market, you can expect numerous showings and perhaps multiple offers. In a buyer’s market, it could be difficult to generate an offer on your house, at least one close to the price you want. The type of market where you live will factor in the value of your home.

Pricing your home is extremely important. Considering comparable sales, or “comps,” is essential in determining the value of your property. You want to think like an appraiser and use homes that are of similar style and age, with similar finishes, close in proximity to your own home. A 4,000 square foot two story home does not compare to a 1,600 square foot ranch.

Once you are ready to list, you want to think like a prospective buyer when preparing your home for the market. What would you like to see when viewing a home to purchase? Is there any deferred maintenance that you need to take care of as a homeowner? Any touch ups like fresh paint? How does your flooring look? Fresh paint, landscaping and pressure washing are all good returns on your investment as a seller.

In order to obtain top dollar, you need to have your home in excellent condition when it hits the market for sale.

Hopefully, this gives you a little insight into the process of deciding to sell your home, timing, pricing and preparing the property for the market. An experienced Realtor can consult with you and guide you every step of the way.

Vital tips for a safe and enjoyable summer trip

As summer arrives, many of us are planning vacations or trips to visit family. Before you set off, it’s crucial to prepare for any unexpected events.

Here’s a comprehensive guide to ensure your travel experience is smooth and safe.

I had a moment, y’all. It was unlike anything I’d experienced within a Bible study, yet here we are.

I went to Bible Study, excited to spend an hour or so with some sisters-in-Christ. On this particular Wednesday, I was introduced to a new member of our group. This would be her second visit I believe, and I welcomed her with open arms. She shared a little bit about herself and said she is new to the community.

We have several women in our study who are very familiar with scripture. They can quote scripture. They can reference books and verses with ease. I love that and while I’m most likely never going to be able to do that, I am blessed to be associated with those who can.

One particular friend shared her thoughts on forgiveness. Her thoughts were passionate, intense even, but also factual, based on scripture that she referenced. The new member of the group did something I’ve never seen in a “safe” place such as a Bible study. So as not to gossip here, I’ll just say that her approach was a constant barrage of put-downs towards her that went on and on.

I had nothing to offer but anger, which I didn’t want to express right then and there. I wanted to respond in a Biblical way, but there was so much more needed than what I could come up with at the time.

Over the next several nights I didn’t sleep well at all. It’s not like me to not try to stop a confrontation, a bully or any kind of pain or verbal abuse put on to another. But the environment needed to be met with calmness, love and respect, and I didn’t have any of that at the moment. The enemy was clearly working on at least one of us, and he sure wasn’t going to get any footing with me.

The next week after much prayer, I attended Bible Study armed with scripture. I was ready, and I fully intended to speak directly, but only with scripture that would teach us all how to handle confrontation.

But the new member had already moved on, saying that the group was not a fit for her. I have to agree, and I honestly hope she finds one that is.

And then there was James. The book of James, New Testament, 3:13-18, to be exact. The scriptures here instruct us in good conduct and wisdom from above. Wisdom that is “first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”

Though I’m sure I have read this scripture before, it has become more impactful having experienced such a situation. I realize now saying nothing at the moment was the correct thing to do, as I would have offered no peace, gentleness, yielding, mercy and so on. I also realize the person who lashed out surely has some pain of her own, and that is something I can pray about for her.

People get “church hurt” by things others do. They take that hurt as an excuse to separate from the church family. I’m thankful that I didn’t add to whatever “church hurt” this person was experiencing.

Whatever circumstances we are in, we all need prayer. I’m thankful for the guidance of the book of James and the confirmation of how to manage oneself in such a circumstance.

New Classes Now Offered at Piedmont Newnan Cancer Wellness The Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness Center at Piedmont Newnan Hospital recently added acupressure, sound journey, drum circle, a journaling class, and reiki to its monthly programs. Cancer Wellness, located on the third floor of the Piedmont Medical Plaza next to the hospital, offers free support services and programs such as yoga, cooking demonstrations, expressive art classes and counseling to anyone affected by cancer, regardless of whether or not he or she is a Piedmont patient.

The Cancer Wellness Center saw record numbers in 2023, with a total of 4,424 interactions, through classes and services that focus on the five aspects of wellness: exercise, nutrition, creativity, knowledge and relaxation. The classes and services are offered on a weekly or monthly basis.

Acupressure, a traditional Chinese healing method where pressure is applied in order to stimulate key healing points, is offered by appointment and helps reduce pain while leaving recipients feeling more alert and energetic.

Journaling A new journaling class, Just Write, is offered weekly and motivates class members to incorporate journaling into their wellness routine.

Music Two new weekly music classes, sound journey and drum circle, both led by Kim “Kiiom” Coker, were also added. Sound journey, is a sound vibration experience, that uses tuning forks, crystal singing bowls, crystal pyramids and other instruments to explore a sense of peace and tranquility while also possibly releasing emotions that have been stagnant.

Drum circle is for people with all levels of drumming experience, that is intentionally freestyle in nature, and allows participants to maximize the creativity and relaxation found when drumming.

Reiki, led by Aida Dotson, is available by appointment only, and helps restore the body’s natural ability to heal, purify and create balance by working with energy throughout the body.

Another new offering at the Cancer Wellness Center is The Turquoise Table. It is said that there is a special connection made between people when they gather around a table and the conversations that occur may not take place in any other context. This table is a place to connect, share and build friendships in a safe and trusted space.

Support Groups are Important Part of Cancer Wellness There are over one hundred hours of programming each month at the Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness at Piedmont Newnan Hospital, ranging from exercise classes and cooking demonstrations, to gatherings of individuals interested in arts and crafts.

Each program has an educational value and connects people at various points on their cancer journey with others, but often the most beneficial and most highly regarded programs offered are the support groups.

There are currently four active support groups offered each month, many of which formed when Cancer Wellness launched in 2014. While the numbers of attendees can vary from group to group or month to month, the consistency of the programs offered provides an important resource for individuals and families facing a cancer diagnosis.

Recently, a men’s support group was added, to support men who have been diagnosed with any type of cancer. Led by a prostate cancer survivor, these monthly discussions will provide information, emotional support, education and resources.

“Each support group may have a different overall focus, but they all provide a way for someone to get what they need, whether that’s advice, answers, encouragement, or just someone to listen,” said Jennifer Palmer, Program Coordinator, Thomas. F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness. “The support groups all have excellent facilitators, but it’s the individual members who truly lead the groups and often provide terrific insight and support.”

The support groups all meet at Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness located in Suite 310 at the Piedmont Medical Plaza 1, adjacent to the main hospital. Those interested in attending a meeting should park in front of Medical Plaza 1 and take the elevators to the third floor. Each support group is free and no registration is required.
