By JOHN A. WINTERS, Publisher It is time for the Greatest Show On Earth, or at least in these parts! The 78th anniversary of the Kiwanis Coweta County Fair hits this month. The 11-day event will take place at the Coweta County Fairgrounds, located at 275 Pine Road, from September 24 - October 4. Some interesting and important information: Mega Passes Get them. You will save up to $15 with each one on Friday/Saturady and $10 Sunday-Thursday. More importantly, you will not be standing in line for your gate admission ticket. And you won’t have to stand in line waiting (again) to purchase ride tickets. Save money and save time. It’s a no-brainer. You can stop by Arnall Grocery, Keith Ross Insurance, Summit Faily YMCA or the Coweta County Extension Office to buy them. Or, check out the front top corner of our website: http://wintersmedia.net for a link to purchase the Mega Pass online. Some background The average daily attendance is around 4,000. The Coweta County Fair has a long and storied history with the very first fair taking place in 1874. After various interruptions through the years, the Newnan Kiwanis Club took over the County Fair in 1947 and has been the headlining sponsor ever since. What It’s All About

Earlier this year a Coweta County Sheriff’s K9, even though hit by a car in a chase, still managed to apprehend a person who had just robbed the Regions Bank on Bullsboro. Regions Bank donated $1,000 to Newnan Coweta Humane Society on K9 Robbi’s behalf. They used the funds to fund/build the dog exercise equipment in their dog play yards. Northgate High School and McIntosh High School Honor Society students and volunteers from a local NonProfit Alliance member, River Life, did a great deal of the building work. A local boy Scout Troop has stepped up to finish the project as an Eagle Scout project. A great community support and collaboration story all around.

Real Estate … wtih Jess Barron

Update on 57 E Broad St. Project Last year I wrote an article about 57 E. Broad St., located in downtown Newnan. There is significant progress regarding this development recently. The site has been Jess Barron cleared and dirt is moving. You may remember 57 E Broad St was the site for the Caldwell Tanks business for a very long time. Well, 57 E Broad is about to be a very large and private, not city-led, mixed-use development. What exactly does mixed-use mean and entail? If you have not visited the 57 E Broad St’s website (57-east.com) or social media pages, I would highly recommend doing so. The site and pages are as informative and rich with content as any local development that I have seen. The overall development is planned to bring together a mix of uses including restaurants, boutique retail, residential lofts, office and commercial space, greenspace, a hotel and a connection with the LINC trail network. There will also be a large food hall, Market 57. The hotel is currently planned as a Courtyard by Marriot. This is nice to see as there is a need for a hotel in downtown Newnan.

Your Hometown Bank

There will be a new entrance on the south side of the site as well. Right now, you can access the property from E. Broad St on the northern side of the property. When the development is ready, you will be able to access the property from Salbide St as well. Another key component of the development is 22 E Broad St. This is currently the site for the Coweta County Administration building and has been for a very long time. This will be the site of the parking deck for 57 E Broad St as well as public parking. If you work, live, or visit downtown, you may know there is a significant need for parking downtown. Visit website 57-east.com or their social media pages for an overview of the property … the layout and type of uses in the development. Jess Barron is an Associate Broker with Lindsey’s Inc. Realtors and former President of the NewnanCoweta Board of Realtors. 

Limiting alcohol and nicotine are also vital in maintaining good overall health and a healthy blood pressure. Nicotine and alcohol can both cause a rise in blood pressure and should be avoided.

Coweta County Family and Consumer Sciences Agent

Q: What can I do to help control and lower my blood pressure?

A:High blood pressure (hypertension) can harm heart and brain health and usually has no symptoms. It damages blood vessels and can lead to serious health problems. It can cause other health problems: heart attack, stroke, dementia, heart failure, kidney disease/failure, and vision loss. It can even lead to erectile dysfunction in men and reduced sexual arousal in women. Blood pressure is typically recorded as two numbers, written as a ratio like this:

Adequate sleep is another vital part of overall health and a healthy blood pressure. Short sleep cycles or poor sleep is associated with hypertension. Creating a nighttime routine and establishing routine bedtimes and wake times are key in a healthy sleep pattern. This gives your body the time it needs to heal and replenish itself. Hypertension can be a dangerous condition if left untreated or undiagnosed. Routine monitoring of blood pressure is vital in knowing if you have this problem, and then you can be proactive in finding ways to lower your blood pressure with lifestyle choices. If these modifications are not enough, then medicine may be needed. Check with your doctor for your specific needs. Source: American Heart Assoc. University of Georgia is an Equal Opportunity, Veteran, Disability Institution 

SYSTOLIC • The top number, the higher of the two numbers, measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats (when the heart muscle contracts). Ideally, this number should be less than 120. 120129 is elevated, and 130 and over is classified as high blood pressure. DIASTOLIC • The bottom number, the lower of the two numbers, measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart is resting between heart beats. Ideally, this number should be less than 80. Any number 80 or above is classified as high blood pressure. There are several factors which can contribute to high blood pressure. One is excess sodium (salt) in the diet. The daily recommended allowance for sodium is 2300mg. But if one is over the age of 50, African American, or has pre-existing health conditions, then the daily allowance falls to 1500mg. Most Americans consume between 3000-4000mg daily, leading to a serious over consumption of sodium in our diets. This in turn leads to an increased occurrence of hypertension. Ways to lower one’s sodium intake can be a matter of reading labels and making better choices. Increasing whole fruits and vegetables is a great way to limit salt intake. Read labels for processed foods and choose those with little to no added sodium. Try to limit ultra processed foods, like fast food and take out, as much as possible. Also choose lean meats and low-fat dairy to limit excess fats in the diet. Plant proteins such as nuts, beans, and legumes are great options, just beware of added salt, choosing no salt or low salt added options. Increasing physical activity is another great way to lower one’s blood pressure. Exercise can help one feel better, physically and emotionally. It can reduce stress, improve your mood, and help you feel recharged. It

Before Flu Season and Holiday Stress, Know Your Numbers As families prepare to settle into busy fall routines, many adults put off routine healthcare visits. But one of the simplest steps people can take to improve their health is knowing your numbers. Many common conditions, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and heart disease, can develop silently without noticeable symptoms. Knowing your numbers is one of the most powerful—and actionable—foundations of preventive care and chronic condition management. “It is one of the simplest ways to take control of your health,” said Adeola Okeowo, M.D., Piedmont Physicians at Premier Medical in Newnan. “When you understand where you stand, you and your healthcare provider can work together to reduce your risk for serious health problems down the road.”

Numbers you should know •

Blood pressure – Key indicator of heart health and stroke risk. Aim for blood pressure below 140/90, with systolic (top number) under 140 and diastolic (bottom number) under 90.

•

Cholesterol (LDL, HDL, Total) – Helps assess risk for heart disease. Aim for an LDL (bad) cholesterol of less than 130.

•

The theme this year is “Candy Cane Lane” and includes the following award categories: • Grand Champion (best float) • Candy Cane Lane Award (best use of theme) • Rudolph’s Choice Award (fun entry that stands out in a special way) • Santa’s Little Helper Award (for an outstanding group of young Christmas helpers, capturing the magic of Christmas) • Christmas Crowd Favorite (winner of social media survey)

Mayor Shepherd shared, “Christmas is the season when all of Newnan comes together. We’re a city that keeps its traditions, and the parade is one of our best. There’s nothing quite like a cold December night downtown, the sidewalks full, kids waving at every float that goes by. I’m looking forward to getting into the Christmas spirit with everybody, and I hope every church, school, team, and business that’s ever thought about entering signs up this year.” The Christmas Parade Committee is being led by Stephanie Beck, City Hall Administrative Specialist, and Andrew Moody, Special Projects Manager. All applications to participate in the parade must be received by pm on December 4. Please visit the City of Newnan’s website for additional information cityofnewnan.org.

Try Gardening, Preserving Food and More to Save Money on Produce, Store Food for Colder Weather By LaTina Emerson As we usher in the fall season and continue to face high prices at the grocery store, it’s the perfect time to take your family’s food needs into your own hands. To save money on produce and store food items for later, consider several approaches, such as starting a garden, stocking up on fresh and nonperishable foods when they’re on sale, freezing produce and meat for future use, and canning fruits and vegetables. Here are some resources and tips to help build your food supply for colder months: Grow a Fall Garden and Preserve Food Do you have a green thumb or have you always wanted to try gardening? Growing your own vegetables is a great way to save money on fresh produce, and there’s still time to plant a fall garden. Even if you don’t have a lot of backyard space, consider having a patio garden using containers, raised beds or vertical planters. If you need help getting started, reach out to experts who can offer guidance and answer questions about best practices.

The farm also has milk and pastured egg subscriptions and sells several meat products, including grass fed beef, pastured pork and pastured chicken. Its vegetables are Certified Naturally Grown following the same standards as the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s organic standards. All food sold by the farm is grown without chemicals, antibiotics or any added hormones, according to Country Gardens Family Farm’s website. For more information about Country Gardens Family Farm, visit https://www.countrygardensfarm.com or call 770-251-2673. Stock Up and Store or Freeze Until Later To stock your freezer and pantry, look out for deals on food items, such as canned and nonperishable goods, as well as produce and meat that can be frozen. Buy these items on sale to stretch your dollars and then freeze or store them until you need them later. Make a shopping list and buy ingredients for your favorite cold weather meals and dishes, such as chili, stew, soup, casseroles or chicken pot pie. Fruits and vegetables, such as berries, tomatoes, beans, greens and corn, can also be frozen for smoothies or ingredients for your desired meals.
