from

Perry Street There are two kinds of people in the world. Examples include boxers or briefs; overlapping or against-the-wall toilet paper rolls; and using your cell phone as a phone up against your ear and mouth OR as a walkie-talkie. I have a certain aversion to listening to people’s conversations, especially when it involves some aunts’ hemorrhoids. But if you want to see the world in a microcosm, you really must visit the annual Kiwanis Coweta County Fair.

White, Black, Hispanic, Indian, Asian, alien, folks from Alabama - they are all there. Every size, color, weight, height. Jocks, cheerleaders, band members, nerds, divas, furries, and on and on. And every sexual orientation comes too.

And I love seeing such a diverse Coweta County. Each year, I work one of the gates collecting tickets and teacher/student passes. So I see everyone coming through. They’re all happy, friendly, and ready for a good time.

Except for the Bobs of the world. There are always a few Bobs, and well, some people just like to watch the world burn. Karens too. Yet, there are really only two types of Fair people. Those who keep their tickets attached, and those who separate them into single tickets. So, after a few years of research, here is how you know who separates and who keeps them together to maintain world order. A couple on a date, and she hands me both tickets attached. She bought them. She is not sure he is the right one either.

John A. Winters, President Corby Carlin Winters, Vice President

Young couples with babies in strollers: Always attached; their hands are already full with baby stuff.

The Coweta Shopper first appeared in 1989. Over the years, the name changed to The Shopper and then The Weekly. The newspaper reverted to its original title in July 2024. Our goal continues to promote local events and consumer-related articles for our readers and our commitment to helping promote local businesses and non-profits.

High school couple on a date. Almost always torn because he does not want to appear overbearing. Me: are you on a date? Him: Yes. Me: Then you hand me both tickets, be a gentleman. Girl: slaps him, turns to me and goes, “thank you.”

Office is located at 15 Perry St., Newnan, GA 30263

Older couple: he hands me two attached tickets. Pure chivalry. Mom holding 10 tickets hands them to me and makes a circle motion with her hands, showing who’s in the inner sanctum. Not only did she buy the tickets; she runs that house. Dads with teenagers: Every ticket is taken apart because he is just not in the mood to deal with their angst.

High school couple on a date, Part 2: He hands me the attached tickets. Me: Nice move. Him: Yes sir, you taught me that last year at the Fair. His date smiles at him. That kid will go far. And then there was the one dad who watched me thank a mom for handing me 10 attached tickets. He looked right at me, and then tore his four tickets apart and handed them to his wife and two kids with an evil smile. “Karma is knowing your credit card is going to be declined at the ticket window, and you can’t buy tickets for the rides, and your kids are going to freak out in public,” I smiled in response. On behalf of Newnan Kiwanis, thank you for coming to the Fair. Over the years, we have returned well over $5 million to the community through grants and scholarships. We could not do it without your support. The Kiwanis International slogan is “Serving the Children of the World.” Our local club takes that to heart, and every member will show up on the sole Tuesday of the Fair. We open it up early and more than 600 special-needs kids and adults, parents, and caregivers get free rein on the rides. We do it because of the photo to the right. Again, thank you for making this happen.

John

Let’s Fall Into Some Land Deals

With fall here, I thought I would write about buying and selling land in Georgia. Fall is often regarded as the best time to sell land and acreage. The temperatures are cooler, it is easier to see the entire property with the leaves falling and there are less bugs and snakes. The process of buying and selling land is completely different than a residential transaction. The list price for land and acreage is typically calculated at a price per acre. The value for the land is determined by factors such as location, topography, water features, quality of soil, timber value, road frontage, internal road systems, structures and/or improvements, uses for the land, comparable sales, etc. It is very important to have a quality survey of the property when selling or buying land. You need to know exactly what you are selling or buying.

Always

Your Hometown Bank

When a property’s value is calculated on a per acre basis, a small difference in acreage can make a huge impact on a sales price. If a survey is not provided, you can ask the seller to provide one or have someone complete a survey for you. Newnan and Coweta County have a great group of local surveyors. I would not recommend buying or selling a property without a survey as there can be disputes about boundaries and encroachments from adjacent properties. Sellers often will cut the timber off a property before selling it to cash in on the value of the timber. I would not recommend this as cutting the timber leaves the land looking barren and rough. You want to dress up acreage, like you would a house or car before selling it. This can be as simple as bush hogging a field or as complicated as adding a pond to make the property more desirable. Thinning is a good idea to help a land tract show better. Thinning is the calculated removal of certain trees with a specific objective in mind (gfc.state.ga.us). This process is beneficial to the overall health of trees on the property also. For example, thinning an area of dead or diseased trees will allow a property to show better. The Georgia Forestry Commission is a great resource for questions about timber. If you plan to build a home or structure on some land, I would highly recommend having a soil or “perc test” completed during a due diligence period. Percolation tests measure the water absorption rate of soil. This will help to determine if you can put a septic tank and drain field on the property. The Coweta County Health Department can provide perc tests, as well as local soil scientists. It is not a bad idea to have a soil test, along with a topographic report, completed before you list a property so the prospective buyers know where they can build a home. A topographic report is a detailed map of the surface features of the land. This includes mountains, hills, creeks, valleys, etc. on a particular property. I hope you are able to enjoy being outside this fall. Walking and showing land is one of my favorite parts of my job! Jess Barron is an Associate Broker with Lindsey’s Inc. This annual honor recognizes an individual who has shown outstanding leadership, citizenship, and a sustained commitment to improving the community. “For years, the Citizen of the Year award has celebrated extraordinary individuals who embody true civic leadership and a spirit of selfless service,” said Nancy Walden, Chair of the event committee. “If you know someone making a lasting, positive impact, we encourage you to share their story and submit a nomination.” The public is encouraged to nominate a deserving individual by completing the nomination form which can be found on the Newnan-Coweta Chamber website. Nominations will be accepted through Wednesday November 11, 2026. The nominee should live in Coweta County, and his/her civic and volunteer activities must be centered in Coweta County and the surrounding area. Consideration will be given to those who demonstrate leadership and performance in multiple areas of community service over a period of years. The nominee may be an individual from any walk of life, and there are no requirements or restrictions relating to gender, age, race, religion, or ethnic background. Individuals may not nominate themselves, and family members may not nominate another family member. Individuals must be nominated on the basis of their volunteer and community impact, not on the result of their paid work. When memberships and organizations are part of the nomination, specific accomplishments must be included. The nomination form should include both the nominee’s name and contact information, as well as the nominator’s name and contact information. The nominator must provide a cover page and answer the four listed questions to describe the nominee’s contributions to the community and obtain two letters of recommendation. A one-page biography of the nominee must also be included. Completed nomination forms and packages should be emailed to the Newnan-Coweta Chamber, info@ newnancowetachamber.org or faxed to 770-253-2271 no later than 5pm on Wednesday, November 11, 2026. The 2027 Citizen of the Year announcement event will be held on January 28, 2027, at the Newnan Centre, 1515 Lower Fayetteville Rd, Newnan, GA 30265, with doors opening at 6pm. www.gentryusedparts.com Fifteen years ago today, we opened our doors and welcomed our very first patients. What began with just a handful of patients that day has grown into thousands of patients served, tens of thousands of office visits, and millions of dollars in free, high-quality healthcare provided to our uninsured neighbors in need.

But through it all, our mission has remained the same: to follow the example of the Good Samaritan by showing compassion, extending a helping hand, and caring for those who need us most. “Go and do likewise.” -Luke 10:37 These simple words have guided our work for 15 years as we’ve sought to share God’s love through the gift of healthcare, changing lives and saving lives along the way. As we celebrate this milestone, we’re taking a little trip down memory lane with some photos from the Clinic’s earliest days — a wonderful reminder of how far we’ve come and the many people who helped make it all possible! To the volunteers, donors, community partners, and friends who have been part of this journey, THANK YOU! Here’s to 15 years of faith, compassion, and service…and to the many lives we’ll continue to touch in the years ahead!

Cancer Wellness Center Offers Support Along Breast Cancer Journey The Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness Center at Piedmont Newnan offers a monthly breast cancer survivor group open to those in any stage of their breast cancer journey. The group provides information, emotional support, education and resources for breast cancer survivors. The next meeting is Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 3 p.m. and is held at the center located at Piedmont Medical Plaza 1, 775 Poplar Road, Suite 340, in Newnan, next to the hospital. Cancer Wellness is a free program for anyone who has ever been diagnosed with any cancer at any point in their cancer journey whether treated at Piedmont or not. The classes and services focus on six aspects of wellness: Creativity, Nutrition, Knowledge, Exercise, Relaxation and Socialization. A full calendar of events can be found at www.piedmont.org/cancerwellness.

What to Know Piedmont Oncology highlights the importance of early detection, screening and high-quality treatment options. According to the Centers for Disease Control, breast cancer is the second most common cancer and cancer-related cause of death among women in the United States, with one in eight women being diagnosed in their lifetime. Piedmont Oncology recommends women start annual mammograms at age 40. People at high risk based on family history or other factors should begin at age 30. There is hope because when caught in its earliest stages, the five-year relative survival rate for breast cancer is 99%. Annual mammograms can be conveniently scheduled online at PiedmontMammo.org. “It is essential that women prioritize breast health,” breast surgeon Frank Powell, M.D., says. “In addition to annual mammograms, women should do at-home selfbreast exams at the same time each month while in the shower, in front of a mirror or lying down to catch any changes with their breasts.” Piedmont Oncology doctors, nurses and navigators work together to provide personalized high-quality treatment plans for patients diagnosed with breast cancer. “Innovative breast cancer treatment options may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy or clinical trials,” Dr. Powell explains.” Visit Piedmont.org/cancer for more information about breast cancer, a step-by-step guide to at-home self-exams and supportive services.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month When I was in high school, my mom had a lumpectomy. It was scary for all of us and my first experience with breast cancer. I remember her discussing what she would do if she did have cancer. My mother was a Yankee filled with moxie and a passion for Jesus Christ. She was a strong, caring and passionate woman. But she would not listen to anyone who had horror stories about breast cancer and their treatment. My friend and neighbor, Pat Lincoln, said that was a big issue she also faced. Fortunately, my mom’s biopsy was negative. She always advocated for her own health and the health of others. So, being my mother’s daughter, I followed her example by always getting regular mammograms and doing self-breast exams, including checking your underarm and rib cage right under your breasts. I remember my mammograms very clearly. The nurse had my breast nice and tight in an X-ray machine. Moments later, she says, “Mrs. Winters, don’t breathe, don’t move … NOW Breathe… DON’T BREATHE, DON’T MOVE!” The nurse reminds me I am in good hands and this is what she does. She re-adjusts me and again takes my breast in her hand as though she is casually picking up an orange at the grocery store. And once again, the nurse says, “Don’t breathe, Don’t move,” and so on. There have been great advancements in women’s breast health. 3D imaging mammograms are the newest incredible technology. These machines require fewer images and provide greater clarity. But we have to do our part, too. I want to encourage all women to be their own advocates. Find doctors you trust and with whom you can communicate openly and honestly.

Our neighbor Barbara Bates Lee lost her stepdaughter at just 41 to breast cancer. Her stepdaughter was afraid and knew something was not right, but by the time she sought medical help, it was too late. She left behind her husband and two young children. As Barbara said “You CAN survive… If you pay attention! I also want to honor some of my dear friends who are breast cancer survivors. Vonda Holbrook and I were high school friends, and I was her maid of honor, Vonda was diagnosed in 2006 at 40 years old when she found her own lump and she had a double mastectomy. Vonda went back to school to become a nurse. Vonda’s mom was diagnosed in 1992 and passed away from metastatic breast cancer in 2000. Emily Chandler Westergreen, owner of Underground Runway, was just 37 when she discovered she had breast cancer; she too had a double mastectomy. Donna Owens just retired and closed Parlor 34 Hair, but she was 45 and then 60 when she had breast cancer. My neighbor Pat Lincoln was diagnosed 2011 and she found her own lump. All these women are still cancer-free and a fabulous inspiration to me and so many others. These are just a few of my dear friends touched by breast cancer. I share their stories to give us all hope and encouragement. This is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Be aware. You are not too busy - make the time. Do it for yourself and those you love.

Our

In October of 2023, our friend Josie Exners wrote a powerful column for The Paper. She shared how she found a lump, which led to a double mastectomy, which saved her life. Be swift to contact your doctor if you feel any changes in your breast or anything in your body. I want to honor some of our friends who have lost their fight with breast cancer. Dona Eley and I were friends and counselors and attended church in Alaska together. Dona was diagnosed in 2014 and passed away from metastatic Breast Cancer in January 2024. She shared her journey in an incredible blog that has left an indelible mark on many lives. Judy Wilson was one of my mother’s best friends throughout her life and her daughter JoQueta was my dear friend. Judy was diagnosed in 1991 with breast cancer and passed away in 2002 from metastatic breast cancer.

Medicare Is Changing in 2027 Here’s What You Need to Know Before Open Enrollment

By Guest Columnist Rudy L. Flores If you have Medicare, October is no longer a month to simply toss another envelope into the “deal with it At the same time, Medicare will implement negotiated prices for additional high-cost medications. That later” pile. could provide savings for some people taking those medications, although the actual impact will depend on Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7, and the decisions you the drug, the plan and the individual’s coverage. make during that window can affect your premiums, prescriptions, doctors and out-of-pocket costs for the Medicare Advantage beneficiaries have another important reason to pay attention this year. Plans can entire year ahead. change their premiums, benefits, provider networks, drug formularies and service areas from one year to the next. Some plans may also leave certain markets. For 2027, there are several changes Medicare beneficiaries should have on their radar.

One of the biggest areas to watch is prescription drug coverage. The standard Part D deductible is projected That makes the Annual Notice of Change, or ANOC, one of the most important pieces of mail you will receive to increase from $615 in 2026 to approximately $700 in 2027. The annual Part D out-of-pocket limit is also this fall. Your plan should send it before the end of September. Don’t just look at the monthly premium. Look at the entire picture. scheduled to increase to $2,400. Are your doctors still in network? Is your hospital still included? Are your prescriptions covered, and at what tier? Has your preferred pharmacy changed? Are there new prior-authorization requirements? What will your maximum out-of-pocket exposure be if you have a bad year medically? And remember something that is often overlooked: Original Medicare does not have an annual outof-pocket maximum. Medicare Advantage plans generally do have a maximum for covered services. Medigap can provide another way to manage certain costs when paired with Original Medicare. For those whose Medicare Advantage plan is ending or leaving their area, there may also be special protections that aren’t available to everyone who voluntarily changes coverage. That is an important distinction and one worth understanding before making a decision. My advice is simple: don’t automatically renew just because you’ve been happy with your plan. Review it. Medicare isn’t one-size-fits-all. The plan that worked well for you this year may not be the plan that best fits your doctors, prescriptions, health needs or budget next year. The good news is that you don’t have to navigate it alone. Medicare.gov provides plan-comparison tools, and free counseling is available through your state’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). Whether you work with a counselor, an independent Medicare professional or do the research yourself, take the time to review your coverage before December 7. A few hours of careful review now could prevent some very expensive surprises in 2027. About the Author Rudy L. More Than Ribbons: 4-H Youth Shine in Fair Animal Shows Bill Hammond, Coweta County 4-H Extension Agent The Kiwanis Coweta County Fair brings plenty of excitement, but for many local 4-H youth, some of the biggest moments happen in the show ring. Months of hard work, daily animal care, and practice come together as young exhibitors demonstrate their skills and celebrate their accomplishments. Coweta County 4-H members competed in horse, rabbit, poultry, goat, and dairy heifer shows. While ribbons and trophies are exciting, the experience teaches lessons that last far beyond the fair. Preparing an animal takes dedication. Young exhibitors learn about feeding, handling, and presentation while developing responsibility, time management, patience, and confidence. Showmanship contests put those skills to the test, challenging youth to demonstrate their knowledge and work effectively with their animals, who may not always cooperate. For six-year-olds Katherine Kerr and Wesley Hammond, participating in the shows was an accomplishment in itself. Both competed in poultry and goat showmanship, while Katherine also participated in rabbit showmanship. Their experiences show how 4-H gives young people opportunities to learn, build confidence, and discover what they can accomplish through hard work. Coweta 4-H youth earned top honors across several showmanship divisions. Coweta Graduates SAT Scores rise in 2026

The Coweta County School System’s average composite SAT score for the graduating class of 2026 rose nine points over the previous year’s class, placing Coweta graduates well above state and national averages on the college entrance exam.

Coweta Schools’ average SAT score rose to 1085 in 2026, 74 points above the national SAT average on the college entrance exam, and 54 points above the state average, comparing this year’s results for all public school students in the state of Georgia and the U.S. Georgia students have outscored the nation on average SAT performance for the last nine years. Coweta Schools have outscored state and national SAT averages for several years, and this year’s rise followed a 14 point average increase in 2025 among Coweta graduates. When 2026 results for all schools are compared – including SAT averages for student test-takers in all public schools as well as private schools – Coweta high school graduates continue to outperform state and national averages. Comparing average SAT scores for test-takers in all schools in 2026 shows Coweta high school graduates 40 points above the national SAT average on the college entrance exam, and 22 points above the state average for all public and private schools. Coweta Schools’ average SAT was also 22 points above the College Board’s reported “Global” SAT average of 1064 in 2026. The College Board’s annual SAT report presents data only for students in the class of 2026 who took the SAT during high school, SAT takers are counted only once, and only the most recent score is included.

and delivering a high-quality education in every classroom across our district continues to make a real difference for our students and our community.”

“However you compare us, our high schools and our graduates continue to outperform their peers state and nation wide,” said Coweta Superintendent Evan Horton. “That delivers real results for students and our whole community. Our focus as a school system is about building the competitiveness of our graduates, whether that is through college readiness or other post-secondary paths. By investing in students and helping them achieve this level of performance, we are making a difference for our students, and making Coweta County the kind of place that others want to invest in as well.”

“I am extremely proud of Georgia’s class of 2026 for becoming the ninth in a row to beat the national average for public school students on the SAT,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said.

“This level of performance is the result of several years of good work from all Coweta schools, pre-K through 12th grade, and the support of parents and our community in that work,” said Horton. “Our collective efforts in K-12 literacy and math, along with expanded Dual Enrollment, Advanced Placement, and Career and Technical Education programs, continues to pay off,” said Dr. Chase Puckett, Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction. “Our relentless focus on ensuring high expectations

Save Money on Pets: Veterinary Care and Pet Adoptions

By LaTina Emerson

Pets are treasured members of our families, and many pet owners want to give their animals the best of everything, from food, toys, grooming and medical care. The costs of veterinary medical care, in particular, can add up, especially as pets get older, so pet owners need to find ways to afford these vital services. Several local organizations are offering ways to save on spay and neuter services and other medical needs, along with pet adoptions. Learn how to save money on pet ownership: HELP Spay/Neuter Clinic The HELP Spay/Neuter Clinic provides quality, affordable spay and neuter services, preventative care and vaccinations for dogs and cats. The clinic, which offers affordable pricing with top-notch professional care, follows the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) Spay/Neuter Alliance National Spay/Neuter Response Team method to ensure safe surgeries. The medical staff performs up to 40 surgeries daily per surgeon, according to the organization’s website. Through partners and the clinic’s transport program, the Snip Ship, HELP Spay/Neuter Clinic extends its services to Butts, Clayton, Coweta, Fayette, Heard, Henry, Lamar, Meriwether, Pike, Spalding, Troup and Upson counties. Spaying and neutering, surgical procedures performed to sterilize pets and prevent them from reproducing, offer numerous benefits for both pets and pet owners, including population control and health and behavioral benefits. The clinic recommends scheduling spay/neuter surgeries for pets early, typically between 4 to 6 months old, but the surgery can be performed at any age, depending on the pet’s health and reproductive status. At HELP Spay/Neuter Clinic, spay/neuter surgeries are performed Monday through Thursday by appointment only. HELP Spay/Neuter Clinic also offers preventative medications at affordable prices to keep pets healthy and protect them from parasites such as fleas, ticks, heartworms and intestinal worms. These parasites can cause a range of health problems, from skin irritation and allergies to serious illnesses like Lyme disease and heart failure. In addition, the clinic provides affordable vaccinations to protect dogs and cats from deadly diseases like rabies, distemper, parvovirus and more. Monthly vaccine clinics are held on select Saturdays in Newnan. Here’s the vaccine clinic schedule for the remainder of the year: Oct. 24, Nov. 7, Nov. 21, Dec. 5 and Dec. 19. The vaccine clinic transport program offers vaccination services in Lamar, Upson and Henry counties. To schedule an appointment or learn more about pricing and financing options, visit helpspayneuter.org/ help-spay-neuter-clinic-payment-options/. Pet owners in need of help to afford their pet’s vaccinations are encouraged to apply for financial assistance: helpspayneuter.org/financial-assistance-application/. The clinic also fosters relationships with full-service veterinary clinics for ongoing care and refers all sick or injured pets to veterinary partners. The HELP Spay/Neuter Clinic, which is open Monday through Thursday from 7:30am to 4pm, is at 12 The Crescent in Newnan.
