A Special Interview with Melody Kiser Musician/Owner of HeyDreamer Music Group, LLC.

1. Tell us a little about your musical background.

I grew up in a musical family, so I’ve been a musician for most of my life. I’m the lead singer and guitarist for my band, HeyDreamer, and music has really shaped almost every part of who I am. I have a Master’s degree in Music Business from Berklee College of Music, and I’ve spent years performing, writing, booking shows, producing events, and working with other artists.

My band is currently working with Will Turpin of Collective Soul and Brian Collins through Real People Music, and we’ve been recording our new concept album at Real 2 Reel Studios. So, I come at Porchfest from both sides: as an artist who knows how hard musicians work, and as an organizer who wants to create meaningful opportunities for them to be heard.

2. How did the whole idea of Porchfest come about?

I’ve played larger music events for years. I’ve performed on music cruises with artists like Melissa Etheridge and Nancy Wilson of Heart, and I’ve toured around the U.S. and played with artists from bands like Journey, Santana, Boston, and others, so I’m familiar with how successful music festivals are run and what makes an event feel good for both the audience and the musicians.

3. Everyone thought Porchfest 2025 was a big success. What were the positives you took away from that inaugural event?

The biggest positive was seeing how much the community embraced it. We hoped people would come, but the response was honestly beyond anything we expected. Thousands of people showed up, and what stood out most to me was how happy everyone seemed to be. People were walking, dancing, sitting in front yards, supporting local vendors, discovering new bands, and just enjoying being together.

I also loved seeing the impact on the artists and small businesses. Musicians were gaining new fans, vendors were making sales, and several downtown businesses had incredible days. It proved that an event like this can be fun and meaningful, but also have a real economic and cultural impact.

And honestly, one of my favorite takeaways was how peaceful and positive the whole day felt. For an event that large, especially in its first year, it was amazing to see people show up with such respect for the neighborhood, the homeowners, and each other.

4. Reviewing Porchfest 2025, what didn’t quite work the way you hoped?

The biggest challenge was that we were prepared for a much smaller crowd than we actually got. We were hoping for around 3,500 people, and we ended up with more than 10,000. That is a wonderful problem to have, but it definitely showed us where we needed to improve.

5. Biggest changes from 2025 to this year?

So, I called Kris Youmans and Steve Quick and asked if they’d want to be part of creating an event that felt tailored to the local musicians here in Newnan. We’re known as “The City of Homes,” so the idea of turning front porches into stages felt natural. It gave us a way to celebrate Newnan’s historic neighborhoods, local music, local artists, small businesses, and the community spirit that already exists here.

So, nothing “failed” exactly, but 2025 taught us a lot. It showed us that if this event was going to grow, the infrastructure had to grow with it.

HeyDreamer, my band, played at the Virginia Highlands Porchfest in Atlanta, and while it was a great experience, it was also a really difficult day logistically for the musicians. That got me thinking about what a Porchfest could look like if it was designed with the artists’ experience in mind from the very beginning.

Porchfest felt like the perfect way to bring all of that together.

The map was one of the biggest pieces of feedback. People loved the event, but the single-page map was a little hard to navigate once they were actually out walking around. We also learned that we needed more signage, more facilities, more security, and better crowd flow.

This year, we’ve made major improvements to the event infrastructure. We’re adding more security, more facilities, better signage, and a much more userfriendly map booklet instead of a single-page map. We’re also working to spread the crowd out more thoughtfully so that people can move through the festival more comfortably.

We also have more participating homes, more music, more vendors, and more community partners. Another big change is that we’ve added even more to our VIP experience, hosted by the Newnan-Coweta History Center! The VIP experience now includes complimentary beer and wine at the museum, character-actor guided historic garden tours, specialty Historic Garden cocktail stops, and more! That gives people a really special way to experience Porchfest while also supporting the organization the event benefits.

Overall, the goal is to keep the charm and magic of the first year, but make the logistics stronger and smoother for everyone.

6. How many bands?

We had an incredible response from musicians this year. We received more than 150 applications, which is amazing and also really difficult because we

This year’s lineup includes dozens of bands and artists across porches, downtown partner locations, and special performances throughout the day. The exciting part is the variety.

You’ll hear rock, country, folk, jazz, blues, singersongwriters, alternative music, student bands, and more. There really is something for everybody.

7. How many volunteers and what all do they do?

It takes a lot of people to make an event like this happen! Volunteers help with everything from check-in and information booths to helping vendors, supporting musicians, assisting with the kids’ area, passing out maps and signage, answering questions, selling t-shirts and posters, and helping people find their way around the festival.

They are really the heartbeat of the event day. A lot of what makes Porchfest feel welcoming comes from having friendly people throughout the festival who are willing to help. We could not do this without them.

8. Proceeds from the event go where?

Proceeds benefit the Newnan-Coweta History Center. That partnership is really important to me because Porchfest is not just about music. It’s also about Newnan, our history, and our community.

9. Anything you want to add?

I just want to say how grateful I am. Porchfest only works because people believe in it. Homeowners say yes to turning their porches into stages. Musicians say yes to sharing their art and donating their time and talents. Volunteers, sponsors, vendors, city staff, local businesses, and community members all come together to make it happen.

That is what makes this event special. It is not just a music festival. It is a love letter to Newnan. It’s a celebration of creativity, history, and community, and I feel really lucky to be able to bring this to our community. 

KNOW HOW TO STAND OUT AND USE AI On CBS Mornings, Catherine Fisher, a LinkedIn career expert, recently noted that it’s taking many applicants up to a year to find a new job. She advises applicants to be as competitive as possible by understanding what employers are looking for. She said that companies are hiring based on skills, particularly artificial intelligence (AI) literacy, such as understanding how to use AI to transcribe notes or help with your calendar. Job seekers should be prepared to answer how they’ve used AI in their work to lead to business impact.

Fisher said that it’s also important for job seekers to lean on their network because 38 percent of hiring managers report giving extra consideration to a referral. For recent grads, their network includes professors, managers from summer jobs or other employers, such as from babysitting. In addition, job applicants should do a strategic, targeted job search and apply to jobs that match their skills. If job seekers must participate in initial AI interviews, they should treat it like a normal interview, discuss expectations with a recruiter and practice their answers. When writing a cover letter, applicants should include personal skills and experience so the letter doesn’t sound generic.

GET YOUR FOOT IN THE DOOR Another report from CBS Mornings shared that hiring for entry-level jobs has declined by 6 percent over the past year, based on a study from LinkedIn users. Rather than trying to find the “perfect job,” Fisher noted that it’s important for new grads to simply get their foot in the door (even through freelance or contract work or internships) and consider this position as a stepping stone to build connections and learn how to work in different environments.

Young job seekers should consider fast growing cities, such as San Francisco; Orlando, FL; Atlanta; Charleston, SC; Tampa, FL.; Austin, TX; Salt Lake City; Nashville, TN; Seattle; and Detroit, according to Fisher.

Job seekers should also focus on their skills (such as research, writing and collaboration) and not necessarily their specific major when searching for employment, Fisher advised.

GAIN WORK EXPERIENCE WHILE IN COLLEGE In a recent CBS Miami story, career experts strongly advised current students to gain experience before they leave college, through internships, capstone projects, mini-internships and volunteer work. Ideally, they should get started during their freshman year and should find a way to relate these experiences to the career they aspire to have. Experts noted that employers are expecting students to already have these experiences. The news story also reported that in 2025, only 30 percent of college graduates secured fulltime jobs, down from 41 percent in 2024.

BEWARE OF WORK-FROM-HOME SCAMS Some ads for work-from-home jobs are legitimate, but many are scams, according to the Georgia Consumer Protection Division. Job seekers should do their research on potential employers and look out for these red flags: • • • •

Requests for payment (certification, training materials, background and credit checks or a job recruiter fee).

High salary for simple tasks or little experience.

Requests to deposit a payment into your account and then wire money on behalf of the company.

This is often used to launder stolen money, and the job seeker could be committing theft and wire fraud.

A vague job description that never states who the company is, what they do and the job duties.

Q. My bathrooms are cleaned regularly, but I still get a pink substance around the drain in my shower. Why does this happen?

A. This is a very common question.

Whether you have municipal water or well water, many homeowners notice a pink substance around the drains in their shower and/or sink and believe they have a water quality problem.

This is not a water quality problem.

Any time you have water sitting for an extended period of time, bacteria can grow. There are many different types of bacteria though. They are not all the same. This pink “slime” is a type of bacteria called Serratia marcescens. It is generally considered harmless for healthy adults; although, for some individuals with compromised immune systems, it could cause certain infections.

To control the pink film on kitchen and bathroom fixtures, you can clean surfaces thoroughly with a household cleaner, then disinfect the surfaces with a strong chlorine bleach solution. Leave it on the surface where the pink slime formed for 10-20 minutes before rinsing with clean water.

Another common question people ask is about the black “gunk” seen around faucets, showerheads and toilets. Regular cleaning and disinfecting with a chlorine bleach solution can also help reduce the incidence of this black substance, which is a type of black mold.

Don’t let the term “black mold” scare you. Just like there are different types of bacteria, the same goes for black mold. There are dozens of black molds. The kind we see around kitchen and bathroom faucets and fixtures is not the black mold that cause health problems. That mold grows on repeatedly wet areas that usually have porous material containing cellulose (like sheetrock). Since your bathroom fixtures are not porous and do not contain sheetrock, then you are probably seeing Cladosporium—a type of black mold that is commonly found in air samples both indoors and outdoors. High levels of Cladosporium can cause allergy problems in highly sensitive individuals, it is not considered to be ‘dangerous’ to the otherwise healthy adults.

Cleaning your bathroom and kitchen faucets and other fixtures regularly with a cleaner containing chlorine bleach will help keep these bacteria from forming.

First Quarter Real Estate Recap

The first quarter (Q1) of 2026 was up and down for Coweta County real estate. The number of closings increased from Q1 2025 to Q1 2026. New listings were slightly up in January and March but significantly down 17% in February from the previous year.

The median sales price was $395,000 for Coweta County in the first quarter of 2026. The average sales price was $453,318. Those numbers were down from 2025. The median price was $409,999 and average price was $465,037 in Q1 last year. The average days on market, or the time it takes for a house listed for sale to go under contract increased. For the first quarter of 2026 the average days on market for Coweta County was 65. The average days on market for the first quarter of 2025 was 59. There was a 4.1 months supply of listings available for the first quarter of 2026, which is considered healthy to slightly favoring the seller. In other words, it would take 4.1 months to sell all the existing listing inventory at the current sales pace. The months supply was down from 4.9 in first quarter of last year.

That’s the data. Working in this market every day, the market felt inconsistent. We would be very busy for a couple weeks then slow the next two weeks. Mortgage rates dipped into the high 5’s percent in January.

This increased the buying power for prospective buyers and seemed to increase activity. The rates quickly rose back into the 6’s percent however. Along with mortgage rates, the war in Iran, rising fuel costs, and inflation all seem to be having negative effects on the housing market. Despite all of this, our office was part of some large land, multifamily and development real estate transactions in early 2026. So, larger deals are still being completed even if the residential single family home market is sluggish.

I would consider the real estate market to be in a relatively fair or even situation as it relates to sellers and buyers. It is not a bad time to purchase as sellers are coming off their list prices and conceding on the closing costs, repairs and credits. Builders, especially, are offering significant incentives for buyers including closing cost credits and allowances. If you are selling, the buyer demand is still strong. In the first quarter of this year, sellers were receiving 98.1% of their asking price.

The Tox, Ashley Park A new wellness and body sculpting studio is coming to Ashley Park in Newnan with the upcoming opening of The Tox, a boutique wellness concept focused on non-invasive lymphatic drainage and body contouring services. The new studio will be located in the former Amazing Lash Studio space next to Bath & Body Works at Ashley Park, located at 362 Newnan Crossing Bypass Newnan, GA 30265. The Tox specializes in lymphatic drainage body sculpting techniques designed to help reduce bloating and puffiness while promoting circulation and relaxation. The studio offers massage and facial services aimed at helping clients feel lighter, more energized, and refreshed without the use of needles or surgery.

Singerie Newnan, Court Square Singerie Newnan is getting ready to open in downtown, taking over the former Corner Arts space on Court Square. Corner Arts recently moved to the old EMC building on Jackson Street, making room for this new antiques and interiors shop. The storefront sign says “opening soon” and describes it as a new shopping spot focused on antiques and home décor. It’ll be located at 30 South Court Square, right in the middle of downtown.

Ronda Rich, a bestselling author and syndicated columnist, exploded on the national stage three decades ago with the wildly successful What Southern Women Know (That Every Woman Should), a book now in its 40th printing with a 20th Anniversary edition released by the original publisher, Perigee.

The popularity of WSWK launched her as a storyteller who rivets audiences with tales of the South as seen through the eyes of its people. With her stories alternating between humorous, sentimental, and wise, Ronda delivers a punch of Southern life, weekly, to over a million readers who revel in a story well told, one that often is entwined with a moral or lesson learned. Rick Bragg will be the Keynote Speaker Saturday at 7pm at the Charles Wadsworth Auditorium, 25 Jefferson St. He is a beloved son of the South and a Pulitzer Prize winner for Feature Writing (during his tenure with The New York Times). He’s a Harvard University Nieman Fellow and a professor of writing at the University of Alabama. His trilogy of nonfiction memoirs includes bestsellers “All Over But The Shoutin’,” “Ava’s Man” and “The Prince of Frogtown.” Other superb books penned by Bragg include “The Speckled Beauty” about his dog; “Somebody Told Me,” a collection of his newspaper columns; “The Best Cook in the World” with recipes from his mother; and “Jerry Lee Lewis: His Own Story,” a biography on the famous singer. Along with the Pulitzer, Bragg has won more than 50 writing awards, including the American Society of Newspaper Editors Distinguished Writing Award (twice) and the Harper Lee Award for Alabama’s Distinguished Writer of the Year (2009). His column appears in “Southern Living” and “Garden & Gun” magazines.

This event will raise funds to support and promote the Carnegie Library and the City of Newnan Cultural Arts Commission through programs, speakers, authors and special events benefiting the local community. Tickets are $35 per person plus service fees and tax and are non-refundable.

Dink & Eric NeSmith Saturday, 3-4:30 pm at the Newnan Carnegie Library. Newspaper Publisher Dink NeSmith started his journalism career at age 10 delivering The Jesup Sentinel from his bicycle. At 24, he purchased an interest in Jesup’s competing newspaper, Wayne County Press. Four years later, he joined Community Newspapers to purchase and consolidate The Sentinel and Press; today, he is co-owner of Community Newspapers, based in Athens, which publishes more than two dozen newspapers in Georgia, Florida and North Carolina. Dink is a past president of the Georgia Press Association and Leadership Georgia. His book, “The Last Man To Let You Down,” tells the story of his Depression-era father who worked as an undertaker. Rick Bragg says about Dink’s book: “If remembering is an art form, then this book is art.”

Eric NeSmith inherited his journalistic know-how from his father, Dink. Eric was named publisher of “The Bitter Southerner” in 2015, two years after the Athens-based independent media company was founded. Originally a digital-only magazine, today The Bitter Southerner publishes three print magazines annually, publishes books under its BS Publishing imprint, produces records at their BS Records label, puts out the “Batch” podcast, and offers iconic apparel and home goods in the BS General Store.
