“I Gotta Go!” “I Gotta Go” seems to be what I hear a lot of lately.

“I Gotta Go” can be painful words to hear.

“I Gotta Go” can mean different things depending on the circumstances.

And it definitely means different things at different ages of one’s life.

For Winters and I the progression of the phrase “I Gotta Go” has been a little bit like this ...

At two years of age, when the SONS would say “I gotta go,” that meant “I gotta pee and I gotta pee now.” Needless to say, Winters and I were quick to respond to that “I gotta go.”

When they were 10, the SONS would likely roll their eyes and say with a perturbed tone, “I gotta go” as they jumped out of the car. Clearly, I was holding them up, holding them back or holding up traffic. Then they quickly dashed off and I would just shake my head in disbelief and think there goes my heart.

In their teen years, the SONS said things like “Mom, I gotta go! I gotta go because I am playing my video game and I will die because I can’t pause. I “gotta go” and get back to the virtual world fast.”

The reality is that daughters become women, sons become men, parents age and sadly they pass away. Sometimes friends are there for us and sometimes they are not.

Sometimes spouses say “I am done” … and even say, “I gotta go.”

Sometimes we are blessed with the easy decisions of life, like I gotta go to the grocery store, I gotta go get one eye contact, not two. I gotta go for a walk, I gotta clean my house, I gotta go kiss my SONS good night and Winters too.

Life is so short my dear friends, and sadly we often waste precious energy and time on insignificant and unimportant things. But as long as we have breath to breathe, we have the opportunity to make sure we make the most out of the moments we have with the ones we love.

We can focus on the significant things of life, because before we know it, in the blink of an eye, those we love will say “I gotta go.”

Now, the Eldest Son has “gotta go” command his tank platoon in the U.S. Army; the middle has “gotta go” to work; the third has “gotta go” see his girlfriend and go to class or work.

It is painful realizing your sweet little boys are men and your heart tightens when they say, “Mom, I gotta go, (fill in the blank)” But it is wonderful too because that means we have launched them.

The fact is sometimes we “gotta go” because we simply have to.

Sometimes we want to. Sometimes we must. Sometimes we need to.

City Invites Feedback for Comprehensive Plan The City of Newnan recently announced that preparations are underway to create a new Comprehensive Plan. A Comprehensive Plan is a 20-year policy guide, updated every five years.

It assesses the City’s current conditions, projects future trends, and is used to develop goals and policies to create a working program to address needs and opportunities. Residents, business owners, and community stakeholders are asked to participate in a collaborative effort to create a community-driven vision for Newnan.

“This process is all about you, your community, and the shape of Newnan in the years to come,” shared Planning and Zoning Director Tracy Dunnavant. “The comprehensive plan is a roadmap to plan and shape the City’s future.” You may access the survey at: https://www.newnanga.gov/655/Comprehensive-Plan-2026-2046.

You are going on an extended solo trip. What three albums and three books would you take?

Not albums, but what three songs would definitely be on our playlist: Born to be Wild – Steppenwolf; I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide – ZZ Top; and Hell On Heels – Pistol Annies.

Three books for the journey: Gloria: A Lifetime Motorcyclist – 75 Years on Two Wheels and Still Riding by Gloria Tramontin Struck; Lone Rider: The First British Woman to Motorcycle Around the World by Elspeth Beard; and Hear Me Roar: Women, Motorcycles and the Rapture of the Road by Ann Ferrar.

Tell us one thing about yourself that few people know.

We are in our third year of hosting International Female Ride Day – Newnan. This will be the 20th anniversary of the global event. We are thrilled to be able to host the event that brings women riders together from (3 different states so far this year) to celebrate by riding together on an escorted 75-mile ride that covers Coweta, Meriwether and Troup Counties. We are fortunate to have grown from 36 our first year to 69 last year and we are hopeful that we will hit our goal of 100 for 2026!

You are hosting a dinner party for six. What five people, living or dead, would you invite and why.

Well, like good women, we are going to bend the rules a bit. There are 7 people we would have to invite: Bessie Stringfield – she was an African American motorcycling pioneer. A female motorcycle rider who was one of the ones who paved the way for us ladies today! She’s left this world, but her memory and her legacy live on!

Elspeth Beard – to sit and talk with her about her journey around the world riding her motorcycle. Reading about it is one thing but being in the room with her and getting to hear it from her and to be able to ask her questions would be amazing. If she ever comes to the US in the near future, we are finding her!

Gloria Struck – she is still with us at 100 years old. She was one of the early members of the Motor Maids all female motorcycle club. She is in both the Sturgis Hall of Fame and the Motorcycle Hall of Fame. Oh the stories she could share and tell with us. Who would not want to be in the room with her?

Dorothy “Dot” Robinson – she was the first woman to win an AMA competition and also founded the Women’s International Motorcycle Association and the Motor Maids! No longer with us, she was the one who set the standard for women who ride. She proved you can be a lady and still ride a motorcycle.

Vivian Bales – native of Albany, Georgia and a schoolteacher. In her twenties, she got on her Harley and road across the country for 78 days. She rode for every woman who’d ever been told to stay quiet, sit still or stay behind. She rode over 5000 miles without a GPS – just a paper map and a suitcase. The things we could learn from her!

The Coweta Shopper first appeared in 1989.

Over the years, the name changed to The Shopper and then The Weekly. The newspaper reverted to its original title in July 2024. Our goal continues to promote local events and consumer-related articles for our readers and our commitment to helping promote local businesses and non-profits.

We ride differently than men, we are typically a lot shorter, and our anatomies are different (of course). The reason – when they are designing motorcycles and the motor clothes we would love to have a little input. Our motorcycles are not garage art, we really do ride them!

Not movies, there really aren’t any out there that are truly about women riders. There are a couple of documentaries though – Driven to Ride by Michelle Carpenter and Motorcycle Women by Janice Engel.

Oh, we love cats and dogs. To be honest, we just love all animals! Some of us even plan our motorcycle rides around exotic animal experiences.

Seasons of Strength March 21-22 at Unity Baptist

When the EF-4 tornado hit March 25, 2021, 1,200 neighbors showed up in 48 hours. Seasons of Strength Newnan is offering Seasons of Strength: The Performance, a two-night commemorative arts event reflecting this defining chapter in Georgia’s recent history and the community response. The performances will take place March 21 and 22, 2026, at Unity Baptist Church, 311 Smokey Rd, Newnan.

Seasons of Strength: The Performance is a live production centered on the voices of more than 100 survivors, first responders, and volunteers. Through original narrative, dance by Southern Arc Dance, and live music performed by musicians of the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra, the performance transforms lived experience into a shared public moment shaped through the arts.

“At its heart, this project is about the power of community,” said Gwendolyn Kuhlmann, Creator and Director of Seasons of Strength Newnan. “After the tornado, Newnan and Coweta County experienced tremendous loss, but we also witnessed neighbors showing up for one another in deeply human ways. This performance holds those experiences with care and gives voice to a phenomenal story of community and resilience in the face of staggering odds. Seasons of Strength reminds us what we’re all capable of when we put each other first.”

Built as an arts organization from the ground up, Seasons of Strength centers listening, dignity, and intention in how stories are gathered and shared. The performance is not designed as spectacle, but as civic memory, allowing community members to see their experiences acknowledged through music, movement, and spoken word.

Seasons of Strength: The Performance is made possible through collaboration across the community, including partnerships with local businesses and supporters helping bring this two-night event to life.

CHEF …

The Chefs column highlights our local culinary masters. They share a recipe that has a lot of meaning to them and thankfully, how to make it. (Well at least most of it, sometimes secrets must remain that.)

This month’s chef is … John, The Little Black Dress and Billy!

Many moons ago, the Little Black Dress and I wrote a cookbook while I was running the Washington, D.C. bureau for the newspaper company I worked for. We always tried them out on some lucky (unlucky) couple or individual. And, if they didn’t die, we would name it after them. Here is one of our favorites.

This year’s Taste of Senoia will include: food from a number of popular restaurants and food trucks, a raffle for a vaction, live music, and lots of fun. Tickets on sale soon! Funds raised will be used in supporting numerous youth-oriented projects, including scholarships. Check Senoia Optimist Club’s Facebook page for more information. 

I believe The Little Black Dress first had this at one of our favorite restaurants in Alaska when my former boss was up for a visit. My boss, who insisted everyone call him Billy, and The Dress both ordered this. And from then on, they were hooked. In fact, every time Billy came up, they’d sit together and devour this. I think the only debate would be the pasta - angel hair, linguini or fettuccini.

Not to be outdone by any restaurant, plus the fact said restaurant went out of business, I set out to develop my own version of this gem. For those of you who love shellfish, this ranks up there as one of our favorites. For those allergic to shellfish, I am truly sorry. Really.

1 stick of butter 3 or 4 scallions/green onions 1 or 2 shallots 6 to 8 mushrooms 1 to 2 cups of white wine 1 cup of olive oil 3 pounds of littleneck clams 2 pounds of mussels 1 pound of pasta, angel hair, linguini or fettuccini The Dress insists I point out you need to clean the mussels and clams first. Most seafood places will have them cleaned, but you never know. For the clams, simply scrub them with a stiff brush. For the mussels, you want to make sure the “beard” is removed. It’s located on one side of the mussel and is a long black strand. Simply grab it and pull it off.

I’ve found a rather wide and deep pot works best for this. I use a 12-inch diameter one that’s about four inches high.

For the pasta, just cook it the normal way in a big pot with lots of water and salt.

Melt the butter in the pot over low heat. Add the wine and olive oil. When the butter melts, add the scallions, mushrooms and shallots. Sauté for a couple of minutes over high heat until the vegetables are soft.

Turn down the heat and throw in the clams and mussels. Stir the shellfish with a big spoon and turn the heat back up to medium-high. Put the lid on the pot and just start shaking the pot back and forth. You don’t have to do this the entire time, but what you’re trying to do is make sure all the clams and mussels get heated up.

If you don’t think there’s enough sauce, you can add a cup or two of water. Keep shaking the pot and every now and then, take the lid off and stir the clams and mussels around with a spoon to get them all coated with the sauce.

This dish only takes a few minutes. You will know when it’s ready because almost all of the clams and mussels have opened up. If there are a couple that haven’t opened, just throw them away – don’t keep cooking just to get those last ones to open as it will burn the sauce.

I usually use a pair of tongs to place the shells on top of the pasta. I then spoon the sauce over the pasta and shellfish and sprinkle it all liberally with parmesan cheese. You can also aadd parsley, more green onions or some red/orange peppers.

You’ll find some of the clams and mussels have fallen out of their shell. That’s okay, just scoop them up with a spoon from the sauce and add them to each plate.

And while it might sound tacky, I always set a large bowl on the table for everyone to throw their shells into. The Dress, however, suggests giving each guest their own bowl. 

I Am Under Contract, Now What?

After working with your lender on getting pre-qualified and spending months, or maybe longer, searching for a home - you are finally under contract. Woo-hoo!

Time to relax and celebrate, right? As many Realtors say, the real work begins when you are under contract.

Arguably, the most important part of being under contract as a buyer is a home inspection.

It is essential to hire a knowledgeable, professional and honest home inspector.

Coweta County has many good local ones. Rely on your real estate agent for recommendations, but also do your own research. Online reviews and testimonials, education background, accreditations, and experience are all important factors when selecting a home inspector. It is not a bad idea to call prospective inspectors to ask questions, discuss pricing and ask what services they provide.

Most home inspectors can provide radon and air-quality (mold) testing, as well as other services such as sewer scopes. When purchasing what is likely to be your largest investment, why not spend some time and maybe some extra money on extra due diligence and services.

Any home inspector is likely to find some items of concern when inspecting something as large and complex as a house. So, what do you do as a buyer when your inspector finds something significant and concerning? Hopefully, your agent has written a due diligence period into your contract. This due diligence period allows you to negotiate with the seller for repairs or credits and a price reduction in lieu of repairs. Let’s say the inspector finds out that the water heater is actively leaking. You could negotiate with the seller to replace the water heater, at their cost, before closing. If you find something even more concerning like an active mold infestation and the seller will not address this, then the due diligence period allows you to opt out of the contract and receive your earnest money back.

Another important step of the buying process is the appraisal. If you are obtaining a loan, your lender will likely order an appraisal, or a third-party opinion of value, of the home. You want to make sure that the appraisal is completed within your appraisal contingency timeline of your contract. This protects your earnest money. If the appraisal comes in below your contract price, then you can renegotiate the sales price with the seller.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month: What to Know . . .

Piedmont Oncology highlights the importance of early detection, risk factors, screening and treatment.

Piedmont Oncology physicians want to educate people about colorectal cancer and what you can do to decrease your risk of developing it or enable an earlier, more curable diagnosis.

Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in the United States. More than half of all colorectal cancers can be linked to preventable risk factors like high body weight, lack of physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption or unhealthy diet.

The American Cancer Society recommends people start regular colorectal cancer screenings at age 45 and continue through age 75. People at highrisk based on family history or other factors should start before age 45. Most colorectal cancer cases can be prevented and there are ways to lower your risk.

“Screenings are recommended for adults age 45 and up- or earlier if you have a high risk or family history,” Piedmont Newnan colorectal surgeon Ibrahim Adamu, M.D., says. “Talk to your primary care doctor to discuss if having a colonoscopy or using an at-home test kit is right for you, it could save your life.”

To reduce your risk of colorectal cancer, consider a healthier diet with more fiber and leafy vegetables and a decreased intake of red meat, more exercise and no tobacco use.

“A high-fiber diet greatly helps maintain Ibrahim Adamu, M.D. colon health, nourishes the colon, makes bowel movements easier to pass and keeps the colon clearer,” says Dr. Adamu. “Everyone should incorporate more whole-grains, fresh fruits and veggies into their diets along with drinking at least six cups of water per day.”

Many colorectal cancers do not cause symptoms in early stages so it can be difficult to detect without screenings. Common signs and symptoms may include blood in the stool, change in bowel habits or stool appearance, stomach cramping or pain, poor appetite, unexplained weight loss or weakness.

“Innovative colorectal cancer treatment options may include chemotherapy, immunotherapy or radiation therapy,” Dr. Adamu says. “Piedmont Oncology specialists will be there for patients in their time of need to provide a high-

quality cancer treatment plan close to home.”

Charlie Eleanor DeRuiter is March’s “Artist of the Month”

The Newnan-Coweta Art Association (NCAA) has selected Charlie Eleanor DeRuiter as its featured “Artist of the Month” for March. Charlie’s art will be featured in the entry way to Newnan City Hall through the month.

Charlie Eleanor DeRuiter is an oil painter based in Woolsey, Georgia. She focuses on light, color, and direct observation, creating studio paintings, portraits, and plein air studies. Her work combines careful looking with personal response, aiming to capture both the structure of a subject and its presence.

She began painting at sixteen while studying at Young Harris College and later studied at the University of Georgia, where she also worked professionally as a photographer. The discipline of photography strengthened her understanding of composition and light. She currently serves as Director of Southside Sketchers, Vice President of the Fayette Art Society, Co-chair of the Workshop Committee for the Portrait Society of Atlanta and is a member of the Booth Artist Guild.

Charlie DeRuiter is also a member of NCAA. NCAA’s general meetings are held on the third Monday of each month (from August through May) at the Harriet Alexander Art Center on Hospital Road at 6:30 p.m. An art demonstration is presented each month. Visitors and new members are always welcome. 

Volunteers are needed on Saturday, March 21, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for the 16th annual Sweep the Hooch cleanup. Organized by Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (CRK), Sweep the Hooch brings more than 1,500 volunteers together each year at dozens of parks and creeks throughout the Chattahoochee River watershed. Volunteers set out on foot, wade in streams, or paddle canoes and kayaks to collect trash for appropriate disposal and recycling. Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy returns as classic anti-hero Tommy Shelby, leader of the Birmingham, England, gang known as the Peaky Blinders. The series concluded its initial run with its sixth season, and a continuing story promised by creator Steven Knight took the form of a narrative feature. And fans are hungry for more Shelby, who rode away on horseback at the end of the series into an uncertain future.

War Machine (available now) – Alan Ritchson (see Amazon’s “Reacher”) steps into this science fiction actioner playing a U.S. Army Ranger whose team gets locked in a fight for their survival against a terrifying machine. The cast includes Dennis Quaid, Stephan James, Jai Courtney, and Esai Morales. Trailers lean into loads of action and violence in this science fiction mashup.

For All Mankind (March 27) – It’s hard to believe that this innovative, prestige series that premiered in 2019 is now in its fifth season.

“For All Mankind” follows an alternate historical timeline in which the Soviet Union reaches the moon first. And instead of the Apollo era winding down in the 1970s, the space race accelerates forward. Of course, this gave way to lunar bases and the militarization of space at the height of the Cold War. Each season jumps forward about a decade, showing the progress of technology and advances in space politics. Season five of this ambitious show explores off-world settlements, principally Mars, with trailers teasing a possible major conflict on the planet.

The Comeback (March 22) – Lisa Kudrow is ready for another comeback in the return of “The Comeback,” which first premiered in 2005. In the

show, the “Friends” alum plays Valerie Cherish, a former sitcom star who tries to revive her career by taking part in a reality series. This ahead-of-itstime, industry satire got high marks for its knowing examination of the television/entertainment business. “Curb Your Enthusiasm” fans might be right at home as the cameras follow Cherish through many cringeworthy moments.

Ted: Season 2 (available now) – In March, Peacock drops the whole second season of this Seth MacFarlane (see “Family Guy”) series based on the popular feature films. The show follows the early life of John Bennett (Max Burkholder) and his foul-mouthed stuffed bear, Ted (voiced by MacFarlane), who has been magically brought to life. Season 2 has John as a high school senior, dealing with the understandable social pressures exacerbated by the interfering Ted. Expect R-rated humor, 1990s nostalgia, and heartwarming coming-of-age feels.

The 98th Academy Awards: Live Stream (aired March 15) – Did you guess correctly? …

This year, it is anyone’s guess what film will be crowned best picture. The battle, pun intended, appears to be between “One Battle After Another” and “Sinners.” However, it’s possible that Timothée Chalamet’s star power might help to lift his ping pong period drama, “Marty Supreme.” While Chalamet has a decent chance to pick up best actor, the sentimental favorite is Ethan Hawke in the little-seen “Blue Moon.”

Another best picture nominee, “Hamnet,” won’t likely win, but its star Jessie Buckley looks to take home the golden statue come awards night.

The Bachelorette: Before the First Rose (aired March 15 – Live after the Oscars) – This pre-season special hopes to build on the momentum from the Oscars, kicking off the new “Bachelorette” season.

The Bachelorette: Season 22 of the popular series premieres on March 22nd.

Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 (March 24) – Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox) continues to battle Wilson Fisk/the Kingpin of Crime (Vincent D’Onofrio) in the revival of the “Daredevil” series. In the first season, Fisk consolidated his grip over New York City by becoming its Mayor. Murdock must figure out a way to combat Fisk, who, as the leader of the town, sets out to rid it of vigilantes. Krysten Ritter returns as Jessica Jones, and other legacy characters (Bullseye?) are set to make an appearance as well. This series is a gritty look at street-level heroes and villains in the otherwise blockbuster Marvel Universe. 

Q: How long can I keep leftovers in my fridge before they go bad?

A: Leftovers are a great way to stretch the food dollar by getting more than one meal from cooking or dining out. They also reduce food waste, but we need to be careful in storing and reheating them so

we do not fall victim to food borne illnesses. Many people grew up in families where food was left on the counter to cool before being put away or simply left out for people to snack on later. However, today we know those practices just aren’t safe. Food should not be allowed to sit out at room temperature for more than two hours. By following this guideline, you are preventing the rapid growth of bacteria that can cause foodborne illness.

TWO-HOUR RULE: Discard all perishable foods left at room temperature for more than 2 hours total time. Discard after 1 hour if the air temperature is above 90°F. Chilling and Storing Leftovers ∙ Store in the refrigerator at 40°F or below. ∙ Use a refrigerator thermometer to make sure your appliance is at the right temperature in the warmest part. ∙ Divide leftovers into shallow containers for quicker cooling or, ∙ Cool pots of soups or stews in an ice water bath and stir to cool quickly before refrigeration. ∙ Slice roast beef, ham, and turkey and place in shallow containers for storage. ∙ Bring leftovers from restaurants home immediately; remember the two hour rule. All the time the food sat out at the restaurant and spent on the trip home counts toward the two hours allowed. ∙ If you plan to bring leftovers home from a restaurant, put a cooler in the car ahead of time. ∙ After bringing food home from restaurants, immediately store in the refrigerator. Never leave it in the car or on a counter for a long period of time. ∙ Label leftovers with the date so you will know how long they have been in the refrigerator. ∙ Keep wraps and containers closed tightly to preserve quality and to prevent leaking and possible contamination. Make sure that the refrigerator is not overloaded. The cold air must be able to circulate in order to cool foods properly.

Reheating Leftovers ∙ Solid leftovers should be reheated to 165°F. Reheat sauces, soups, and gravies to a rolling boil. ∙ Foods can be heated on a stove top, in an oven, or in a microwave oven. ∙ When reheating in an oven, never use a temperature less than 325°F. ∙ When reheating in a microwave, be sure to cover the food but loosen a corner or vent the container to allow steam to escape. Stir food midway through cooking to eliminate cold spots where bacteria can survive. Allow food to stand two minutes after reheating to let heat distribute evenly throughout the food. (If your oven manufacturer recommends a different standing time, use that time).∙ Be sure to reheat precooked foods such as hot dogs and deli-style meats in case of contamination before serving to young children, older adults, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems.

Leftovers Timeline • Salads made with mayonnaise do not freeze well; refrigerate and use within 3-5 days. • Pre-cooked food with meat or poultry thawed in the refrigerator should be eaten within 3 to 4 days. Most frozen leftovers will keep well for several months in the freezer, but refrigerated leftovers should be used or frozen within two to three days.

Leftovers are one of the best parts about large meals or nice restaurants, so take care to handle them properly. Be careful to store and reheat them properly so they can be enjoyed at another meal.
