The keynote speaker was Mayor Jayden Williams , mayor of Stockbridge and the youngest African American mayor in Georgia. Let’s Celebrate

Freedom isn’t free.

It was actually July 2, 1776, when our forefathers voted to seek independence from Great Britain. The Declaration of Independence was actually signed on July 4 by the Continental Congress. At least that’s what the National Archives told me and that is your history lesson for this month.

We can never forget that Freedom isn’t free. Someone always pays the price.

And that is whether it is for their friends and family, or those they will never know or meet.

The Founding Fathers paid a price. Each soldier who fought in any war paid a price. And we have soldiers out fighting today, this very hour, this very minute.

They fight so we will remain free.

But even ordinary people with ordinary lives fight for our freedoms every day.

The counselor, fire fighter, teacher and so on.

Freedom does have a price. And I hope we never take that for granted. I think of the Statue of Liberty and how it symbolizes freedom, democracy, and a beacon of hope. So many over the decades have come here seeking a new start, and they still come wanting to share our freedoms.

This July 4, 2026, is a momentous moment in America’s history as we celebrate 250 years of freedom and independence. How many countries can celebrate that?

I have always felt blessed to be born in America, and this year I particularly pray that we celebrate and give thanks for our freedom, recognizing the cost of that freedom. I also pray for protection for those who are not free and do not share our freedoms. As I said above, I pray we never just take that freedom for granted.

For me, I will continue to pray that the Lord’s wisdom, mercy, grace and peace will lead and protect us all. And remember that Jesus paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

Elizabeth Banks is an actress whose character meets a nice young man and they decide to have an adult sleepover. Purpose of said sleepover is to see if they like each other enough to maybe have breakfast, or another sleepover.

Unfortunately, Banks’ character gets locked out of the apartment for some reason I cannot recall. I do recall her car keys and wallet are inside her new friend’s apartment. Call him!! everyone says in unison.

Oops. Phone is in the apartment as well. The movie is called Walk of Shame, and yes, the movie is exactly about that. By the way, “Do The Google” on Miss Banks. She is one of those actresses where you go, “oh yeah, I remember her.” Hint - Hunger Games.

So, Miss Banks’ car is in the parking lot. She has no keys. She has no wallet and she has no phone. Oh, and she has a potential life-changing job interview in the morning. On the other side of Los Angeles. (The movie is set in Los Angeles, by the way.)

A long way to get to the lede (yes, that is spelled correctly) of this column: And that is: You have a life-changing interview in Atlanta. You have no car, no wallet and more importantly, no phone. What are you going to do?

I was hanging out with some of the other cool folks who work in downtown Newnan at 15 Perry Street (drop by and check it out) and this came up. What would you do without your phone?

Let’s start with this: You know by heart your spouse’s number; the number of your old house where you grew up; and …?

I know Corby’s number, my old lake house number, the switchboard number of the company I worked at for 25 years and mine. For the record, I only know mine because everyone always asks for it.

I never call it. Because I am very worried I might actually answer and … that would just be weird.

I do not know my parents’ numbers, nor my three sons or my favorite daughter-in-law’s (I only have one by the way, as she repeatedly points out. Still my favorite as of today). I have them all on speed dial, but hell no, I could not remember their number with a gun to my head.

And, I am guessing, neither do you. It’s okay. I feel your pain. I used to know 100 plus numbers, now it is five. Maybe.

Technology is awesome. Until it is not. My phone lets me know that the incoming call is Spam. This creates a hell of a dilemma.

That is missing the point.

If I answer … okay, let’s all laugh out loud. If I ignore it … the phone keeps ringing and no one is happy. If I cancel it, the spam goes straight to my mailbox, which will soon max out. I am getting more than 60 such calls a day. One time, I got 3 in under 8 minutes.

I am now forced to keep my phone on mute. And go in every few hours and delete all the bankers who tell me my loan is approved and I just need to answer a couple of questions to finalize.

And I appreciate Google or whomever showing me some collection of photos that I might want to save. But not really. Go match all my socks, that would be more helpful.

And “Google” AI is impressed with my dog as my screen saver. Yeah, we are safe. And finally … do you go to the bathroom without your phone? Ever?

What To Expect – Sales Contract Process and Timeline

It is easy for Realtors to take for granted what we do every day. We know the general process and timeline for each transaction, though there is variation in every deal. A good Realtor considers their client’s point of view to educate them regarding both what is likely to transpire and what could potentially transpire. This article will cover the timelines of a contract from the seller’s point of view.

When a seller seems very surprised about something that happened in a real estate transaction, their agent should think “did I properly prepare my client”?

During the first consultation, a Realtor should set expectations for their client, including timelines.

Of course, things like value and commission should be discussed, but timelines are important as well. How long will it take the property to receive a contract? How long will it take for that contract to close? What about due diligence and appraisal periods?

Your agent can look at days on market, or how long it took for comparable properties to receive a contract. Depending on the property, this may be only a few days or several months. Knowing this sets expectations.

Once you an accept an offer, many sellers wonder now what? In our area, it is common for the buyer to have a due diligence period for a home inspection, an appraisal period for an opinion of the value of the home and a period for the buyer’s loan to be approved. There may be other timelines as well. For example, if the buyer has a home to sell, they may have a contingency period for their home to sell before purchasing yours.

It is common right now, for a due diligence period to be between 7-14 days depending on the buyer’s situation. An appraisal contingency is typically 7-25 days. There is a larger deviation here due to where the buyer may be in the loan process as well as how capable and efficient a lender is. It is wise to know as much as about the buyer and lender when considering a contract. The contingency for the loan approval is typically 14-30 days. Again, a wide range here is due to the many variables of both the buyer’s and lender’s situation.

When all is said and done, most contracts take 30-60 days to close. The closing attorney typically needs at least a week to run a title search on the property to investigate if there are any liens, title issues, etc. Knowing the timelines and what to expect ensure a smoother transaction for everyone.

West Georgia Technical College celebrates GED graduates and entrepreneurship trainees at local correctional institution West Georgia Technical College’s (WGTC) department of adult education recently held a graduation ceremony for 31 incarcerated students at the Coweta County Correctional Institution.

Nine students earned their GED and 22 students completed an Entrepreneurship and Small Business training course (ESB). Students who earned their GED took courses in math, language arts, social studies and science. Students who earned their ESB certification learned about entrepreneurial and small business principles through at least 150 hours of instruction.

“Research shows when individuals that are incarcerated are involved with educational opportunities, recidivism drops,” said Rebecca Wheeler, Dean of Adult Education at WGTC. “It is really important to get into these facilities and provide these programs. This can open so many doors for these individuals, and it allows them to provide for their families and their communities.”

“I am extremely proud of our corrections education,” Wheeler said. “Anytime we see any of our adult education students achieve something, it is incredible because we are all about second chances. For those who are incarcerated it hits a little different because they know they have done wrong, and to see them make lemonade out of lemons is pretty inspiring.”

The Keynote Speaker for the graduation ceremony was Dean Alford. Alford spent four years incarcerated at the Coweta County Correctional Institution and was released within the last year. While he was incarcerated, he was the one that got the inmate led GED program started.

“I think the partnership between West Georgia Technical College and the Coweta County Correctional Institution is a blessing because it is giving second chances through education,” Alford said. “This partnership has allowed men to find jobs and promotions that would not be possible without this program.”

Wheeler said these programs can create new beginnings for anyone that is willing to give it a chance.

Alford said to come back and be the keynote speaker for the program he helped startup was a great honor.

“These programs create self-confidence and self-efficacy, and in return it allows these individuals to do more and move onto bigger and better things,” Wheeler said. “Once they get out, there are a lot of second chance employers that are great because they are extremely helpful in creating opportunities.”

“In my career I have given numerous amounts of speeches, but I cannot remember a time where I was more excited than this,” Alford said. “I am also excited because as these men are getting out, I am giving them help and guidance as they begin their next chapter.”

According to Wheeler, WGTC is working on expanding the program into jails and reentry programs throughout WGTC’s service delivery area.

ChildrenConnect Museum Kicks Off Fundraising Campaign The ChildrenConnect Museum officially kicked off its inaugural fundraising campaign.

The museum, located on Temple Avenue in downtown Newnan, is a hands-on, play-based museum for children up to age 12, focusing on creativity, exploration, and learning through interactive exhibits and STEM activities.

The Giving Tree mural has spaces for donors to give funds, which are recognized as variously covered leaves, birdhouses and butterflies.

Special recognition was given to Pamela Prange, founder of the museum; Georgia Shapiro, who was instrumental in saving the historical building; Alyssa Hale from Newnan High School, who painted the mural; and Dr. Ben Popple, for his contributions to the museum.

“Each of these individuals has made it possible for this museum to continue for future generations,” said Maryann Kuhn, museum director.

Bridging The Gap Community Outreach Expands Summer Lunch Program to 7 Locations As school doors close for the summer, the need for reliable meals continues for many children across our community. BTG Community Outreach is committed to ensuring that no child goes hungry by expanding its Summer Lunch Program to seven locations this year.

This program provides nutritious, ready-to-eat meals to children who may otherwise lack consistent access to food during the summer months. For many families, this support is not just helpful — it is essential.

Q: How can I sell bread and pastries at local markets and on social media?

A: Selling bread, pastries and other homemade

products can be a fun side job, but it is important to follow local and state guidelines to protect consumers and yourself. First, you must understand the limits of what can and cannot be sold from a home kitchen.

Bread and pastries are considered “cottage foods”. Cottage foods are home-prepared, non-potentially hazardous and non-TCS (time/ temperature control for safety) foods sold directly to consumers without requiring a commercial kitchen. They are products limited to those that can be made in your own home kitchen and are safe to store at room temperature. They do not need refrigeration or freezing for them to be safe to consume.

Other cottage foods include: • Artisan breads and baked goods • Decorated cakes, pies, and cookies • Fruit jams, jellies, fruit butters, and preserves • Handcrafted candies and confections • Dried herbs, teas, and spice blends • Gourmet popcorn, granola, and snack mixes

Allergen Warnings: Clear identification of major allergens: milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts, soybeans, sesame, and wheat.

Required Statement: MADE IN A COTTAGE FOOD OPERATION THAT IS NOT SUBJECT TO STATE FOOD SAFETY INSPECTIONS.

Georgia’s cottage food law allows you to use your home kitchen and equipment. In fact, commercial equipment cannot be used since it cannot be properly cleaned and sanitized in home kitchen sinks.

Finally, verify local zoning ordinances and business regulations in your city or county. Some farmers markets may require additional vendor licenses or have specific insurance requirements beyond state law. You may not be able to sell from a home-based storefront if local zoning regulations do not allow it.

Check with local authorities regarding sales tax collected and business licenses you may need. Cottage food sales are allowed at farmers markets, online and even across state lines although your farmers market or municipality may require additional licenses or permits.

Coweta County Master Gardeners 2026 Scholarship Recipients From Special Reports The Coweta County Master Gardener Extension Volunteer (MGEV) program proudly awarded four scholarships this year to outstanding students pursuing higher education.

Two students received scholarships of $2,000 each. An additional student was awarded the Pat Clayton Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $2,500. Pat Clayton established the first MGEV Scholarship and served as chair of the scholarship committee until her passing in 2019.

This also marks the second year the MGEV Scholarship Committee has awarded a $2,500 scholarship in memory of Jan Bowyer. A Master Gardener for more than 20 years, Bowyer dedicated her life to educating and inspiring those around her.

The 2026 scholarship recipients are:

Cafe 1485 announced it will soon be relocating to a larger space in Newnan, taking over the former Shirley’s Country Kitchen location at White Oak Center, next to Harbor Freight.

The move comes just weeks after Shirley’s Country Kitchen closed its Newnan restaurant. You can find Shirley’s Country Kitchen at their LaGrange location on Whitesville Road just south of I-85.

In a social media post, the Cafe 1485 team shared its excitement about the expansion, thanking customers for their continued support and noting that the restaurant has outgrown its current location. While a grand opening date for the new restaurant has not yet been announced, Cafe 1485 said it will continue serving customers at its current location until the move is complete.

The Piedmont Newnan Hospital Department of Volunteers recently awarded $10,000 in scholarships to students who are children or dependents of full-time and part-time Piedmont Newnan Hospital employees.

“It is an honor to be able to assist the children and dependents of our hospital employees with their education costs,” said Jeannie Johns, Piedmont Newnan volunteer coordinator and a member of the scholarship selection committee. “We receive numerous applications each year and it is a joy to read about the goals these young adults have and ways they will impact our communities in the future.”

The Piedmont Newnan Hospital Department of Volunteers Scholarship is funded by proceeds from the Poplar Shop gift shop and sales from events throughout the year and awarded to students pursing post high school In honor of Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month in education.

April, Piedmont Newnan hosted two events to help educate the community about head and neck cancers. A free This year, five recipients were each awarded a $2,000 scholarship. Sunscreen needs to become a part of one’s daily routine rather than just something to apply before a visit to the beach. The American Academy of Dermatology Association offers these tips from board-certified dermatologists regarding the proper use of sunscreen.

Use SPF 30 or higher. Choose a sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher, and look for one that is water-resistant and provides broad-spectrum coverage, which handles UVA and UVB rays.

•

Try tinted iron oxide. Sunscreens that are tinted with iron oxide offer better protection for the skin against the development of dark spots. Iron oxide protects the skin from the sun’s visible light.

•

Apply ahead of time. It takes approximately 15 minutes for the skin to absorb sunscreen and provide protection. Therefore, it’s best to apply it well before heading outdoors.

•

Don’t be stingy. It’s important to use enough sunscreen. Most adults need about one ounce, at a minimum, of sunscreen. That’s about enough to fill a shot glass. This will help fully cover skin that is not protected by clothing. When applying sunscreen to the face, at least one teaspoon is needed. Always rub sunscreen thoroughly into the skin to ensure it is absorbed and evenly distributed.

•

Recognize order doesn’t matter. As long as the sunscreen is at least SPF 30, water-resistant and broad-spectrum, the order it is applied does not matt. It can be applied before or after other skin care products and makeup. It’s best for a person to figure out what works for their routine.

Know that most ingredients work. Sunscreens are often grouped into two categories: chemical and mineral. Chemical sunscreens use ingredients like octisalate or homosalate to work, while mineral sunscreens use either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Both chemical and mineral sunscreens are effective, but people with sensitive skin may want to go with mineral sunscreens, which often leave a noticeable white cast on the skin.

•

Reapply frequently. It’s important to reapply sunscreen every two hours, and immediately after swimming or sweating. People who get sunburned often use too little sunscreen or didn’t reapply the product enough.

•

Check the expiration date. Sunscreen expires and can become ineffective. If the sunscreen has been sitting around for awhile, it’s probably best to toss it and buy a new bottle.
