Piedmont Oncology welcomes innovative head and neck surgeon and surgical oncologist, Mark W. El-Deiry, M.D, to its team of cancer specialists. Dr. El-Deiry will be based out of Piedmont Newnan Hospital. He will also serve as the founding medical director for Piedmont Oncology’s Head and Neck Cancer Program.
“Dr. El-Deiry is an exceptional surgeon, physician, and leader, and we are thrilled that he has joined the Piedmont Oncology physician leadership team,” said Walter J. (Wally) Curran Jr., M.D., Whitaker Endowed Chief, Piedmont Oncology. “His surgical and leadership skills will augment the services we can offer our patients. He will lead a multi-disciplinary program to serve Piedmont patients with tumors of the mouth, throat, sinuses, neck, or facial regions.”
Piedmont Oncology is a premier community-based cancer care program—providing compassionate, quality care that is fully aligned with research and innovation, to patients across Georgia.
“Being able to offer high-quality, specialized patient-centered care to men and women in this community, where they have their support system, is such a positive to their recovery,” said Dr. El-Deiry.
Dr. El-Deiry has been practicing medicine for over 20 years and is one of the most experienced head and neck cancer surgeons in the country. Prior to joining Piedmont, he was the Program Lead for the Head and Neck Tumor Program at Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University where he developed a unique multidisciplinary model of care for head and neck cancer, including the design of the new cancer tower in Midtown Atlanta, as well as helping that program achieve national prominence. Dr. El-Deiry is board certified in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He specializes in treating both benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck. His special interests include microvascular reconstruction of complex head and neck defects, post radiation complications in the head and neck, as well as treating rare tumors of the head and neck including salivary tumors and vascular tumors.
Dr. El-Deiry earned his medical degree from Rush University Medical College in Chicago and completed his Otolaryngology-Head and Neck surgery residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He then went on to complete a fellowship in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and Microvascular Reconstruction surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle.
“We are so excited to have Dr. El-Deiry join our team of dedicated cancer specialists,” said Mike Robertson, CEO of Piedmont Newnan. “He will be a wonderful addition and will help us continue to expand our service offerings here in our local community.”

Clothes Less Traveled … CLT Nonprofit Thrift Shop, a trusted name in affordable thrift shopping and community support since 1997, is proud to announce the grand opening of its second location at 10 The Boulevard Suite #104 in Newnan on Friday, August 8, 2025 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m..
With a long-standing presence in Peachtree City, CLT has provided essential funding to dozens of local charities, scholarships to student volunteers, and free clothes and home essentials to neighbors in need. This is all possible due to CLT’s community of donors, volunteers, and shoppers. Now, with nearly half of its grantees based in Coweta County, CLT is bringing its mission-driven shopping experience closer to home for Newnan residents.
“Our new location addresses the increasing needs of the community,” stated Hope Brown, Executive Director of CLT. “Numerous nonprofits that we support are situated in Coweta; however, their supporters have not always been able to access our Peachtree City store. This new facility will serve to bridge that gap. We are enthusiastic about providing Newnan residents with the opportunity to shop, donate, and volunteer with a purpose.”
The new store will offer a curated selection of affordable, gently used clothing and home decor. While the
“Never mind, Jim and I figured it out,”
“That’s great hon,” I replied. “Wait, what?”
“‘Jim and I figured it out.”
Okay, so at this point, I got out of my chair to see who Jim was and why he was in my house. Oh, and also what in the heck he was helping Corby with.
“So where is this Jim?” I ask.
And the Little Black Dress looks at me like I am some kind of crackpot who needs to be in one of those homes for, well, crackpots.
“Gemini!!’” she says, pointing at her phone.
Oh yeah, Gemini, the guest who just installed itself on my phone and won’t go away. For you precious snowflakes who believe Apple is all that and a bag of chips, Gemini is the new and very NOT improved Android version of Siri.
I was very happy with my “Hey Google” voice before - a sexy Australian female.Called her Danielle, and I would press a button and she’d tell me good morning in her little Australian accent and then tell me what all I had going on that day.
Now we have Hal 2000 from the Space Odyssey. Can we change the voice? No. In fact, Jim or Gemini or whoever made it very clear … that would be a NO!
And Jim is sort of an idiot at times, such as: “Hey Google, call Corby.” Lots of twirling going on inside my phone and then I get the Data voice saying, “Do you want me to call Corby?” So I have to say “yes,” or it won’t call Corby. And then it (Jim/Gemini) proudly says, “Calling Corby.”
LIke it should get a participation trophy or something.
Another major headache - in the past, I would ask Danielle a question and she would find whatever I needed and say, again in that cool Australian accent, “here’s what I found.” And then I would see various options and choose one and read it.
But not Gemini. No, Gemini will go find the answer to my question and then read it to me in the horrible Hal 2000 computer voice.
For example, I wanted to know if penguins have knees. They do, which you probably didn’t know, but let’s see what The Dork says.
“Yes, penguins have knees, but they are hidden inside their bodies by feathers, giving them a short-legged appearance.”
Which is kind of like asking if humans have knees because they are hidden by long pants. “Yes, humans have knees,” according to Jim/ Gemini/Hal, who does not elaborate.
Apparently, there might be a way to change the voice. Working on that. Stay tuned.
Until next time.

ATLANTA – Parent advocate Cathy Nenov of Newnan has secured an official proclamation from Governor Brian Kemp recognizing World Fragile X Day on July 22 in Georgia.
Fragile X syndrome is the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability and autism. Each year on July 22, iconic landmarks around the world “light up” to raise awareness. This year, more than 500 landmarks in 21 countries participated—including Niagara Falls, the PECO Crown Lights in Philadelphia, Matagarup Bridge in Australia, and the Hellenic Parliament Building in Greece.
Georgia joined this global effort with several key sites illuminating teal:
• Concourse King & Queen Towers, Atlanta – 5 & 6 Concourse Parkway NE, Atlanta, GA 30328
• Savoy Automobile Museum, Cartersville – 3 Savoy Lane, Cartersville, GA 30120
• Cumming “Home” Water Tower, Cumming – GA Highway 400 Exit 14 (near 243 Bald Ridge Rd, Cumming, GA 30040)
• Pedestrian Bridge (Jesse Jewell Parkway), Gainesville – Downtown Gainesville, GA 30501.
Congratulations to John Abbey, 77, who recently shot his age at the Newnan Country Club. For those wondering, he shot a 77, only five shots over par. That is a feat any golfer would love to achieve.

Congratulations to the 5th and final 2025 Abby’s Angels Foundation Scholarship Recipient, Avery Pruett! Avery is the first home schooled student chosen to receive an AAF Scholarship. She is an award winning member of the Coweta County 4-H program including the Horse & Pony Club, Agriculture Club, Dairy & Horse Quiz Bowl Teams and Judging Teams just to name a few. She coordinated and led educational sessions for kids who didn’t own their own horses and serves her community with eagerness, including organizing a school supply drive for Abby’s Closets. It was shared that Avery is always kind and respectful to everyone she encounters and greets others with a smile. She serves her church community as well, faithfully volunteering in the K-5th grade ministry and by being an involved member of the Student Life Group.
Avery knows that all it takes is one text, one glance, one moment to change lives forever. Avery realizes that setting an example is the most powerful influence she can have on her peers for safe driving behaviors. She feels that if bad driving habits become socially unacceptable in a friend group, more people will be motivated to drive safely. Avery stated “she can help create a culture where safe driving is the norm by encouraging her friends to hold each other accountable.” This. This is how we create positive life saving change and outcomes. Thank you Avery!

If you’re renting or leasing an apartment, house or condo, you could be one incident away from needing to relocate or facing a major financial loss. Consider getting renters insurance to protect your personal belongings and provide liability coverage in case of an accident or injury on the property.
Renters insurance helps tenants to replace personal items, recoup their expenses or protect them from monetary loss if an emergency occurs. Learn more about the benefits of renters insurance:
Renters insurance usually includes several types of coverage, according to AAA:
• Personal property coverage protects your personal belongings, such as furniture, electronics, clothing, appliances and more, from events such as theft, vandalism, fire, certain natural disasters or water damage.
• Liability coverage offers financial protection if you’re found legally responsible for an accident
or injury to someone else or damage to their property while they’re on your rental property.
• Additional living expenses (ALE) coverage is useful if your rental unit is not fit to live in. ALE coverage helps pay for temporary living expenses such as hotel bills, meals and other costs, until you’re able to move back into your rental. If any of these events occur, renters can file a claim with their renters insurance company to be compensated for their loss, up to the policy’s limits. This is also minus any deductibles. Renters should review their policy to understand the coverage limits, exclusions and deductibles and contact their

insurance provider with any questions, AAA reports.
If renters need to file an insurance claim, Allstate.com recommends contacting the insurance provider as soon as possible to report the claim. Renters should protect their items from further damage and document damaged items with written notes, photos and videos of the damage.
Some benefits of renters insurance, according to AAA, include:
• Protects your personal belongings. If your belongings are damaged or stolen in an event covered by your renters insurance, this insurance can help cover the cost of replacing these items, saving renters a substantial amount of money.
• Offers liability coverage. If someone is accidentally injured on your property or you damage someone else’s property, renters insurance helps to protect you from financial loss if you’re found to be legally responsible. This includes financial responsibility for medical bills, legal fees or other costs.
• Cost effective. Renters insurance is typically affordable. The benefits of having the coverage can outweigh the costs.
• Confidence that you’re protected. Renters insurance coverage allows renters to have peace of mind because they’re financially protected if unexpected events occur.
NerdWallet reports that Georgia is one of the most expensive states for renters insurance, with an average rate of $194 per year. However, renters can find affordable coverage by shopping around.
In 2024, NerdWallet reported the cheapest renters insurance company in Georgia was The Hanover. The personal finance website recommended Country Financial and USAA as the best renters insurance companies in Georgia.
The price of renters insurance can vary based on your location, coverage limits, number of units in your building and other factors, according to AAA. To get the best rate and coverage, tenants should find companies that offer rental insurance policies and then compare quotes. AAA suggests some additional points to consider:
• Coverage options. Determine what types of coverage are included in the policy, such as personal property, liability, and additional living expenses coverage. Make sure the policy provides adequate coverage for your belongings. Take inventory of your belongings stored in the apartment, house or condo to assess the value of your items. This will help you figure out how much personal property coverage you will need.
• Policy exclusions. Understand what’s not covered by the policy, which could include floods, earthquakes and certain types of personal property. If needed, consider buying additional coverage. According to Allstate.com, certain types of belongings, such as jewelry or a coin collection, have limited coverage under a standard renters insurance policy. Renters might be able to add special coverage called scheduled personal property coverage to protect their valuable items.
• Coverage limits. Examine the policy’s coverage limits, the maximum amount your policy will pay for personal property losses, to make sure they cover the value of your belongings and potential liabilities. Consider purchasing additional coverage if the limits are too low. Some rental properties might require tenants to have a certain coverage limit.
• Deductibles. Be sure to consider deductibles, or the amount you’re responsible for paying outof-pocket before the insurance coverage kicks in. Select a deductible amount that you can afford if a tragic event occurs. Allstate.com points out that the lower your insurance premium is, the more your deductible may be for each covered loss.

Because I work with words for a living, I am keenly aware that words are spelled in some interesting ways. If I were queen, things would be different and much more consistent. Who, I wonder, decided that “townhome” is one word but “town house” is two words?
I had coleslaw on the brain recently and visited Merriam-Webster.com to confirm that yes, it’s one word and not “cole slaw” like I sometimes see it spelled. A word etymology website had it listed as “cole-slaw,” but that is simply an abomination.
The reason I’m obsessing over the spelling of coleslaw is that when I was younger, I thought perhaps I was hearing “cold slaw” (as opposed to “hot slaw”), but it turns out that coleslaw is a variation of the Dutch word “koolsla,” which literally means “cabbage salad.”
Coleslaw isn’t a food I’ve thought about very often. I like a good slaw dog every now and then, especially in the summer, but regular coleslaw has never topped my list of favorite sides. I could take it or leave it. Then I decided to make my own one day and learned that it’s super easy to whip up a bowl full of fresh and crunchy coleslaw thanks to the bags of pre-shredded cabbage available at grocery stores. These bags of mixed cabbages and chopped carrots is what I think of as a classic base for coleslaw, and then you just add some sort of salad dressing according to your preference.
But I was poring over one of my old cookbooks the other day, Gems from Georgia Kitchens, when I discovered a recipe for a fruit slaw that sounded intriguing. I’d never heard of a slaw made with fruit since all coleslaw recipes I’m familiar with are exclusively vegetable based. This one sounded pretty good, though— with grapes, pineapple, and fresh peaches—so I had to give it a try. The dressing part of the recipe called for cream and included a quaint note to “omit if counting calories.” My thinking is that if we’re going to be eating mostly cabbage and fruit, hey, let’s live a little and add the cream.
To be honest, though, I needed a dish to take to a ladies’ luncheon and had zero interest in firing up the oven this month. This was a great new recipe to simply assemble and call it a day, and frankly, I like this fruity slaw even better than the other kind.

o 2 cups cabbage, finely grated (press between paper towels to remove liquid)
o 1 cup seedless green grapes
o 1 cup canned pineapple, drained /diced
o 1 cup fresh peaches, diced
o 1/2 cup mayonnaise
o 1/4 cup lemon juice
o 1/4 cup sugar

Using a medium-sized mixing bowl, add first four ingredients and toss well. In a separate bowl, combine dressing ingredients, whisk, then toss lightly over the cabbage and fruits. Store in refrigerator until time to serve. Yields 10-12 servings.

Did you know the song “Seven Bridges Road” was written in 1969 by Newnan native Steve Young? The most popular cover of the song that most people will remember is the 1980 version – a fivepart harmony arrangement – by the Eagles. It has been covered and/or recorded by over 25 artists, including Newnan’s own Alan Jackson on the Live at Texas Stadium album with George Strait and Jimmy Buffett.

The Coweta County Master Gardener Extension Volunteer (MGEV) program proudly awarded five scholarships this year to exceptional students pursuing careers in agriculture, horticulture, environmental sciences, and related fields.
Three students each received a $1,000 scholarship in recognition of their academic excellence and passion for their chosen career paths. In addition, one student was honored with the Pat Clayton Memorial Scholarship, a $1,500 award named in memory of Pat Clayton, who was instrumental in establishing the MGEV Scholarship Program and served as chair of the scholarship committee until her passing in 2019.
This year also marked the inaugural presentation of the Jan Bowyer Memorial Scholarship, another $1,500 award given in honor of Jan Bowyer. A devoted master gardener for more than 20 years, Jan dedicated her life to educating others and sharing her love of gardening with the community.
“Each year, we are pleased to see how many young adults apply for the Master Gardener scholarship, and we are honored to be a part of their journey,” said Dana Selementi, Agriculture and Natural Resources Program Assistant for the Coweta County Extension Office. “These students were selected based on their outstanding applications and academic achievements. I’m confident they will go on to make a meaningful impact in their chosen careers.”
The Coweta County MGEV program remains committed to supporting future leaders in agriculture and environmental stewardship through education and outreach. This month, Winters Media & Publishing visited with local business owners Jason Duncan and Darrell Hannah of D&G Garage Doors to learn more about their Coweta County-based company.

Duncan and Hannah became partners some 21 years ago, back in 2004. Jason is a Navy veteran with numerous years of construction experience. Darrell started his career in the Newnan familyowned Rook’s Garage Door business when he was 18 years old and has been at it for over 40 years. He is still going strong.
Of course, the company name D&G Garage Doors obviously tells folks that the focus of their business is garage doors. There’s much more to it than simply putting a door in an empty space.
“There are so many styles, colors and material options these days,” says Darrell. “We really have to be educated salesmen, translating what the home owner wants – to an acceptable door. Or steer them in the ‘availability and cost’ direction they want. Depending on the size and style, a garage door can cost $900 and up. High end, larger doors can be over $10,000!”
“Some jobs require calculated installations – like low headroom or high headroom. More home owners are installing car lifts in their garage and need the door to go straight up the wall and then go back. That kind of installation requires a few adjustments and materials to have the doors raise and lower correctly. Garages with minimal room in the ceiling (low headroom) require a special garage door opener – called a jackshaft. The installation is very different than the typical ceiling mount opener.”
And now openers have entered the hi-tech world.
“We install Liftmaster openers,” said Jason. “We’ve found them to be reliable, affordable and we can easily get parts. There are many model options depending on what the home owner wants to pay and the application needed. And now all models are WiFi enabled, to be run by an App on your phone, if you prefer.”
What are some of the challenges D&G Garage Doors face as a company?
“First, homeowners watch remodeling shows,” Darrell said. “They don’t realize how expensive the garage doors are. And second, inexperienced installers. They will put in garage doors and openers, not understanding exactly what they are doing. Then we are called to fix issues that were caused by simple inexperience.”
What’s the protocol if a potential customer wants a new garage door or needs a repair?
“Our local veteran-owned company never charges for estimates on repairs or installing or replacing garage doors,” said Darrell. “After we are contacted, we go out to look at the job and let customers know exactly what your repair or new garage door will cost. This service is always free. And if everyone is in agreement, we get to work.”
“Customers will find that our prices, customer service and quality of work are hard to beat. We will be here when the ‘new’ companies are long gone.”

From Special Report
Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation (YMMC) has announced a strategic partnership with DHL Supply Chain to enhance its internal distribution operations.
This transition, tentatively on October 5, 2025, will allow YMMC to expand capacity, improve logistics transparency, and accelerate delivery to customers — all without disrupting current service levels to customers.
As part of the partnership, approximately 175 YMMC team members will transition to the DHL team and continue supporting distribution operations. These team members will remain on-site and be critical to the success of this next phase in YMMC’s growth and transformation.
“This partnership with DHL is a forward-looking step in making our supply chain more agile, efficient, and scalable for future growth,” said Bob Brown, President and CEO of YMMC. “By enhancing our internal logistics capabilities, we’re able to focus even more on our core strength — world-class manufacturing and creating Kando for our customers.”
YMMC’s decision to collaborate with a global logistics leader like DHL underscores its long-term
commitment to operational excellence. DHL brings proven expertise in distribution, material handling, and inventory management — all critical to supporting Yamaha’s evolving market needs.
In 2024, YMMC assembled over 150,000 vehicles for worldwide distribution at its Newnan, Georgia facility — including Side-by-Sides, ATVs, WaveRunners, and Golf Cars. With this new partnership, YMMC aims to ensure the entire value chain continues to meet the highest standards of performance and reliability.
This transition reflects YMMC’s long-term strategy to build a more responsive and scalable supply chain. With DHL’s on-site support and logistics expertise, YMMC is well-positioned to strengthen reliability, increase flexibility, and continue delivering exceptional service to customers across all markets.
*Kando is a Japanese word for the simultaneous feelings of deep satisfaction and intense excitement that we experience when we encounter something of exceptional value.
The Southeastern Conference just concluded four days of its annual Football Media Days event at the College Football Hall of Fame in downtown
Atlanta. And part of the news out of the event is the 2025 Predicted Order of Finish as voted on by the media folks in attendance. Texas was named the preseason favorite to win the SEC championship, followed by No. 2 Georgia, then Alabama, LSU, South Carolina, Florida, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Auburn, Missouri, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Kentucky and Mississippi State.

I’m going through some trials. I’m sure most of you are as well. So many confusing, heart wrenching, hard-to-comprehend situations across the world, the nation, our communities, our friends and families. But nothing is new. Though situations can be uncharted territory for each of us, they aren’t a surprise to God. If I have a goal in this, it is to remain steadfast. I would love to say I’m never rattled, shocked or hurt, but that would not be the truth. I am not, and haven’t always been steadfast in my faith. When trials hit and pull at my most fragile edges, I react. Do I fall to my knees and pray? Honestly, most of the time, no. I get angry. I cry. I go to bed and try to sort out the A to Z of the situation, using my own understanding, my own experience, my own comprehension.
As Dr. Phil McGraw says, “How’s that working for you?”
It doesn’t work and has never worked for me. I believe the only way I could be the kind of person with total acceptance and steadfast faith would be if I were in a constant state of prayer, with no distractions, surrounded by others in the same light. In scripture we find that Job went through trials that were beyond human comprehension. There’s a whole book in the Bible that illustrates his life, his losses and the advice of his closest friends. Job was as broken as a human can be, yet he remained steadfast. When tragedy struck, he didn’t wallow in it, he took it to God. Measured by the standards of Job, I’m a wallower. I’m thankful to know that although it takes me a hours or days, I eventually take it to God.
And the peace! Y’all. I’m not even kidding. The PEACE that God provides never fails to make me wish I was the kind of woman who didn’t suffer with what I perceived as my very own exclusive pain with my very own exclusive solutions.
Each one of us, believers or not, are children of God. Knowing the love that I have for my children, I cannot imagine the love God has for us, nor can I begin to understand the pain He has when we are hurt or separated from Him.
God answers prayers. He does. But I realize that the answer I want is with limited knowledge. What I want may not be what He wants for me. And honestly, if God doesn’t want it for me, I don’t want it at all.
James 1:2-3 says, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.”
Scripture doesn’t say when we will count it all as joy, although my impatient nature wants the heartache to go away now. I have to leave my burdens at the foot of the cross in steadfast love and trust. During the trials I am to be patient for God’s direction so I may know His plan for me.
If it’s not from God, I don’t want it. I don’t want my own concoction of solutions to soothe the pain. I don’t want my plans to move forward even an inch without God. It’s not always easy, this world we live in but there’s a plan beyond anything we can perceive and I believe in the perfect plan of God. With the grandkids out of school, summer is a perfect time to get outside and make lifelong memories. It’s also a great excuse to shake off those winter blues and soak up a little vitamin D.
We love short day trips that offer a bit of fun, a change of pace, and when it’s just the two of us, some quality time together. Whether you’re flying solo, exploring with a partner, or piling into the car with a few grandkids, there are plenty of great spots just a short drive from Newnan.
Less than an hour away in Pine Mountain, Callaway Gardens is one of our go-to spots. It’s peaceful, beautiful, and there’s always something to do. You can stroll through the butterfly center, dip your toes in the lake beach, or take a leisurely nature walk. They’ve even got golf carts and trams to take you around if you need it.
We love the annual pass. If you go more than twice a year, it’s totally worth it. We’ll often pack a picnic, head over for a couple of hours and not feel like we have to stay all day just to get our money’s worth. And in the summer, there are concerts on the beach, fireworks, and other fun events. This is a great day trip for when the grandkids are in tow or just the two of you.
If it’s been a while since you visited Warm Springs and the Little White House, this summer might be the time to go back. It’s a meaningful place full of history, and older grandkids usually find it interesting (especially if they’re into presidents or WWII). For us grown-ups, it’s a lovely reminder of the past and a slower, quieter way of spending an afternoon.
Just 30 minutes from Newnan, Serenbe in Chattahoochee Hills feels like a little escape to a different world. It’s this beautiful mix of nature, creativity, and calm. You can enjoy a farm-to-table lunch, catch a show at the outdoor theater, or wander through the organic farms and art galleries. On Saturday mornings, there’s a farmers market that’s fun for all ages.
For something super close, Chattahoochee Bend State Park is a hidden gem. It’s perfect for a shaded

walk, a riverside picnic, or just soaking in some nature. You don’t have to be an avid hiker. There are plenty of easy paths and it never feels too crowded. Bring a pair of comfy shoes, a folding chair, and you’re set.
About an hour and a half away in Columbus, the National Infantry Museum is an unforgettable experience. The exhibits take you through every era of American military history, from the Revolutionary War to today. It’s air-conditioned, wheelchair accessible, and free (though they do appreciate donations). We’ve been more than once—and still haven’t seen everything! My husband is one of those “read-everyplaque” types, so we usually take our time and spread it over two trips. There’s also a quiet café inside, so you can sit down, grab a bite, and talk about everything you’ve seen. It’s a powerful visit and one of the most meaningful day trips you can take.
You don’t have to go far to find fun, fresh air, and a little adventure. These nearby spots are perfect for making summer memories—whether you’re chasing butterflies with the grandkids, sharing a quiet meal at Serenbe, or just enjoying a shaded bench with a good view and great company. So pack a cooler, charge your phone for pictures, and hit the road. The best kind of summer stories often start just a short drive from home.

As the population of aging veterans continues to grow across the nation, many families face challenges in finding personalized care solutions. Financial considerations can often be a significant hurdle in securing the support their loved ones need.
Many veterans of the U.S. military—including those who served in the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, or Coast Guard— may not realize they could qualify for in-home care benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Your loved one may qualify for financial assistance to cover in-home personal care if they meet certain requirements:
• They served in active duty in the military, naval, or air service and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.
• Members of the Reserves or National Guard may also qualify if they were called to active duty by a federal order (not for training purposes) and completed the full term of their service.
Veterans may be eligible for benefits under the VA’s Community Care Network (CCN) program or the Aid and Attendance program.
Through the CCN program, veterans may receive coverage for home-health care services. This service can provide a variety of personal care needs, such as bathing and dressing, in
Home Helpers is proud to welcome Jojo Johnson as our Veteran’s Advocate. Jojo will help veterans navigate and access support through the VA Homemaker and Home Health Aide Program. A Minnesota native, she began her service to others at age 18 when she joined the U.S. Navy. She spent eight years as a Navy corpsman and went on to become a Registered Nurse. With a deep passion for patient advocacy— especially for her fellow veterans—Jojo brings both personal experience and professional expertise to her role.
addition to home maker needs, like cooking and housekeeping. A service care coordinator is assigned to assess the veteran’s care needs and determine the number of hours of care required each week. They will then contact a VA authorized agency, like Home Helpers, who will provide you with qualified caregivers. Payments for CCN services are made directly from the VA to the authorized care provider.
This program is available to veterans receiving a VA pension who require assistance with daily living activities. Eligibility criteria include:
• Needing help with tasks like dressing, bathing, or eating.
• Being confined to bed due to illness or injury.
• Residing in a nursing home.
• Having limited vision.
• Requiring supervision due to dementia or other cognitive diseases.
For veterans unable to leave their homes because of a permanent disability, the VA may provide additional “Housebound” benefits. These funds are typically added to the veteran’s monthly pension.
Families can apply for these benefits by completing VA Form 10-10EZ and submitting it to the Department of Veterans Affairs. Additional steps include:
• Visiting a local VA center to speak with a service coordinator, case manager, or social
worker.
• Gathering documentation, including proof of military service, identification, financial records, and medical information, as required. A VA service representative can guide you through the process and provide details on the documents needed.
It’s advisable to begin the application process as soon as possible—even before in-home care is required. Processing times can be lengthy, and early application can help avoid out-of-pocket expenses while waiting for approval.
Home Helpers is proud to assist veterans who wish to age in place by offering professional in-home care services. Our caregivers provide support with:
• Personal care tasks, such as bathing, grooming, and dressing.
• Household chores, including light cleaning, laundry and meal preparation.
• Assistance with mobility and toileting needs.

I have often shared about my mom and dad’s extraordinary impact on my life. Yet, they also impacted the lives of so many others. I have shared their stories in churches, blogs and with friends and clients. I always talk about them, even though they passed in 2009 and 2010.
My parents were gifted at helping others, advising and guiding them to find their calling and step into their purpose, both in their work and spiritual life. They wrote so many handwritten notes of encouragement and wisdom. As I write this post it makes me reflect on my love of ministry, counseling and being a life coach. My greatest passion has always been helping others fulfill their dreams and step into their purpose.
I still tear up every time I read this small handwritten note with just six tips to success. Tip number 4 was for me because I have dyslexia and a learning disability, but they urged me to always go after my dreams. And yes, they knew I would never work in a bank counting money. Trust me, that is not my gift. I have this precious note posted throughout my house for a reminder of their encouragement.. It is amazing how much our written words can touch us for years to come.
Dear Corby: 9 / /5 /05
Success is the result of:
1. Having a Dream
2. Give it all you’ve got
3. Believe in yourself and believe in your dream
4. Work within your limits and your capabilities
5. Enjoy and love what you are doing
6. Set some realistic goals for yourself and be patient Enjoy,
Our love Mom and Dad
I pray you are blessed and encouraged, my dear friends. I hope these words will encourage you, help jumpstart your dream, and get you on the road to success as you step into your purpose and fulfill your dreams. Maybe they will even encourage you to share your knowledge and insight with someone you know needs your wise words.
Blessings,
